Two men wanted in connection with one of the city’s biggest drug busts are expected to surrender to police.

As of Thursday morning, warrants were still outstanding for Danny Le, 32, and Paul Matthew Johnson, 31, both of Campbell River.

Musician: Continues the passion Continued from A1 River.

Clarkson had come to the West Coast for a few months to be with family in an effort to “kick start” her life.

On one of the last Sundays of the season, she headed down to the Pier Street Farmer’s Market where she heard the local acoustic duo Fiftieth Parallel – Jonathan Hinds and Phil Marchand.

Clarkson loved their sound so much so that she decided to catch the teens’ next performance at Carihi Secondary during a fundraiser for the school’s music program. Clarkson enjoyed the duo’s set and was just leaving when someone suggested she stay for the next act, Who Is Barbosa.

The teen band features vocalist Kyell Erickson, drummer Jacob Storback, bassist Mitchell Robertson and the guitarist she’d been searching for, Collin Massie.

“It was like watching my husband as I watched you play,” says Clarkson, in a letter she later wrote to Massie.

Gil Clarkson was passionate about music – a lifelong rock ‘n’ roller.

He got his first guitar at age 12 and later learned how to play piano. And then he captured the heart of his future wife when he improvised playing Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” for her on one of their first dates.

“He could play from hearing a song or from written music.

He heard music in perfect pitch,” writes

Clarkson. “My favourite time of day was after supper. While I would do the dishes, he would play for me.

This is one of my happiest memories of our time together.”

And now, three-anda-half years after his death, here was this kid – a stranger – playing on stage, his presence and his music reminding her oh so much of her late husband.

And that’s when she decided to fulfill the promise.

Gil’s prized guitar was a 1972 Stratocaster. In his youth he had meticulously lacquered it – in 25 coats of red!

Then, in his 50s, Gil decided it was time to take the Strat back to its roots. So he took it to a friend’s shop in Saskatoon to have it refinished back to the original blonde wood base.

Sadly, Gil wouldn’t be around to play his

refurbished “axe.” As the blood disease took over his body, he no longer had the strength in his fingers to play.

Gil knew he was dying. In his final year, he and Pat talked about what to do with his instruments. She suggested giving the Stratocaster to his grandson.

“He turned to me and said, ‘No. This guitar is meant to be played.

I need someone to get that guitar that loves playing, won’t stop playing as he grows older and would truly appreciate this guitar,’” writes Clarkson.

Collin Massie started playing guitar at age 11 and hasn’t slowed down. He and his buddies started a band, they’re recording their own music, and he’s already accumulated two Strats of his own.

more about him. She stopped by the principal’s office, then spoke to Massie’s mom Trish, who also works at the school, and she told them what she intended to do: She would give the original 1972 Stratocaster to this young man who embodied the memory of her late husband.

“I told her it was a gesture that would not be lost on him,” says Carihi principal Sean Toal.

The Strat was still sitting on the guitar maker’s shelf in Saskatoon – waiting for the right person – when Clarkson made the call and had it shipped out to the coast. Then she returned to Carihi on Jan. 10, with guitar in hand, and presented it to Massie. She also told him about her husband and his passion for music. Her reward was a walk to the band room where Massie strapped on the iconic rock guitar and played for her.

“I was pretty overwhelmed. I didn’t know what to say, but it was

a good feeling,” says Massie.

And this Strat, compared to his other two, was different. The neck is just the right size for his left hand, he loves the clear wood finish and it holds a note better than any other electric guitar he’s played.

“The neck is between the usual sizes, but it felt perfect,” Massie says as he straps on the Strat and then takes a moment to reflect on its original owner, a man he has never met and never will.

“This guitar will

always be played and will continue the passion that he always had.”

And that’s music to Clarkson’s ears. In concluding her letter she writes: “Please accept this gift from one fanatical guitar player (who’s jamming in Heaven) to another. Baby Eli continues to battle on successfully KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The baby boy whose battle with a rare form of cancer captured the attention of hundreds across the Island, is winning his fight.

Campbell River’s Eli Perry, who spent his first birthday at BC Children’s Hospital, is back home with his family after spending all but three months of his young life in the hospital.

Eli, who turned one in November, came home to Campbell River in mid-December – an early Christmas present for his family.

His aunt, Jodi Perry, said Eli is making strides.

“He is doing very well, with local physicians being able to manage the weekly blood work,” Perry said. “He goes back to Children’s every few weeks for full check ups as he deals with g raft-versus-host issues.”

Eli’s latest struggle with graft-versus-host disease is a compli-

cation from a bone mar row transplant he received from his younger brother Isaac, who was four-and-ahalf at the time of the operation in late August.

The condition occurs when the newly transplanted donor cells attack the recipient’s body, causing abdominal pain, vomiting, dry eyes, jaundice, rash, and fatigue.

Though Eli still needs to be evaluated by doctors at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver at least once a month, a local pediatrician is able to do the needed blood work and connect lines to Eli’s central venous catheter.

Perry said she’s not sure how long Eli’s battle will last, but for now it’s enough just to see him at home with his family.

“All I know for sure is how fantastic it is to see him toddle around after his brothers and sisters and wrestle like every baby boy ought to do,” Perry said.

And Eli has plenty of support.

He comes from a close knit family of seven siblings.

While Eli and his mom stayed at Children’s Hospital, his dad and brothers and sisters stayed behind in Campbell River but travelled to Vancouver nearly every week for visits since Eli was first admitted to hospital.

Eli was diagnosed with a rare form of adult leukemia when he was just three months old.

On Aug. 20, 2012 he received his bone marrow transplant and Eli and his mom went into isolation for 100 days in order to protect Eli from infection.

Eli’s story struck a chord with people who came from around the Island to help support fundraisers for Eli last fall.

Drugs: Three arrested in cash, cocaine seizure Continued from A1

Police seized morphine, hydromorphone, oxycodone, some cash and other drug trafficking paraphernalia from an undisclosed location in the city last Friday.

Sandra Robinson, 51, of Campbell River is charged with trafficking a controlled substance and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Campbell River’s newest attraction is nearly built and is expected to open this spring.

The pieces of Rotary’s much-anticipated splash park are standing, with only minor details yet to be completed.

“The work remaining is the installation of the perimeter walkway and the landscaping,” said Lynn Wark, parks project supervisor. “The landscaping will simply involve grass in the area that was disturbed during the construction process.”

Construction began in July, shortly after a ground breaking ceremony at the Sportsplex.

The splash park has a mini fire hydrant, a small archway, a hose element, and it boasts a black mega soaker – the first of its kind in B.C. The mega soaker, a bowl that fills with water and then tips over, is expected to be the main attraction.

The park sits just below the tennis courts, beside the basketball court and across from the playground in Willow Point Park behind the

The final pieces of the splash park are expected to be complete in the next few months, though Wark said there are no firm dates for when construction on the walkway will get underway.

“We are waiting for the manufacturer to get the product to us,” Wark said.

“As soon as it is received we can install as the ground has all been prepped and is ready to go.”

The grand opening is tentatively scheduled for this spring. Wark said the city is working with all the different groups who donated to the project to set an exact date, but said it could possibly be over the May long weekend.

The splash park is a joint community project between the Noon Hour and Daybreak Rotary Clubs, the Campbell River Professional Firefighters Association, Telus, and the city.

The two Rotary Clubs paid for the largest chunk of the project at $160,000 while the firefighters pitched in $20,000.

The city paid for $75,000 of the project costs through the parks parcel tax and will also fund annual operating costs of $30,000. Telus provided $123,200 through a campaign in which $100 was donated on behalf of each community member who signed up for Telus’ Optik TV last year.

The splash park was a three-year process. The project idea was first brought to city council three years ago and received approval in principle in 2010. The splash park was given final approval by council in November 2011.

Unusual steps considered in sex offence case involving youths PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Extraordinary measures are under consideration to provide real time transcripts of court proceedings to a man charged with sex crimes involving minors.

Hugh McKay, 67, of Campbell River is charged with sexual assault and invitation to sexual touching a person under age 16.

The female victims were 12 and 11 years old respectively when the alleged offences took place in Campbell River.

Since his second arrest last July, McKay has been held at the B.C. Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port

Coquitlam.

On Wednesday morning, he appeared by video in Campbell River provincial court for a hearing to determine his psychological fitness to stand trial.

According to Crown prosecutor Bruce Goddard, McKay was first arrested June 24, 2011, after a 12-year-old girl told police that a man had grabbed her buttocks.

The alleged incident took place near the downtown Community Centre.

McKay was released from custody the following day on bail conditions, but a warrant for his arrest was issued in September 2011 after he missed appointments with the

probation officer.

The warrant was vacated when he did show up for his next court appearance when he pleaded not guilty to sexual assault, and a trial date was set for June 2012.

However, when it came time for the trial, McKay’s lawyer asked for a psychological fitness assessment.

The trial judge agreed and ordered the report to ready for July 9, 2012.

But just five days before the court date, McKay was arrested a g ain following a complaint made by an 11-year-old girl.

According to Goddard, the girl knocked at McKay’s door and he allegedly offered her

$40 to have sex.

McKay was arrested the same day and later detained.

On Oct. 4, Judge Peter Doherty ruled McKay was not fit to stand trial based on Dr. Eugene Wang’s finding that McKay was unable to follow or properly understand the court proceedings.

McKay does use a hearing aid, but it’s unclear if it actually helps him.

Goddard did point out there is concern among authorities and some staff at the forensic hospital regarding McKay’s “selective ability to hear.”

to him and sometimes acts if he cannot hear.

Regardless, the situation changed in December following another fitness hearing at the forensic hospital.

This time McKay was able to read the real time transcripts of what was being said on a computer monitor and was able to understand the proceedings.

As a result, Dr. Wang changed his opinion and determined McKay was at least marginally fit to stand trial.

But the new diagnosis was news to both the prosecutor and defence lawyer Doug Marion when they came to court on Wednesday in Campbell River.

“I just heard about this,” Marion told

Judge Parker MacCarthy.

Marion had an opportunity to speak with McKay privately, by video, before the hearing occurred and wasn’t sure if his client properly hears or understands what is happening.

“I can’ t say his answers encouraged me,” Marion told the court. “Trying to deal with him orally has never been successful…we may have a miscarriage [of justice] here.”

Judge MacCarthy agreed that McKay has some sort of auditory impairment, “selective or not,” and also raised the issue of whether the equipment to provide real time tran-

scripts was available in provincial court.

A hearing, involving equipment to provide a real-time transcript, has never occurred in the Campbell River courthouse.

However, Goddard said he would look into the matter to find out what equipment and operators are needed, and if it is even available to the court system in order to provide a fair trial.

“I’m not trying to railroad Mr. McKay in any way,” he said.

“This is a serious issue.”

More infor mation on what will occur next is expected to be presented to the judge at McKay’s next court date on Jan. 28.

Canadians generally, and hockey fans in particular, are pretty forgiving. It’s likely the arenas in the NHL’s six Canadian cities will be just as full and noisy had the season been at its proper midway point. Those who can’t get a ticket, or afford one, will be tuned in to Hockey Night in Canada, a Saturday night TV tradition for more than 60 years.

By the time the race for the Stanley Cup playoffs heats up in earnest, say in two weeks, most fans will probably have forgotten there was a lockout in the first place. Especially in Toronto. After all,

their team might already have been out of it had the season started on schedule last October.

It’s hard for the average working person to relate to a labour dispute between billionaire owners and employees who earn millions of dollars. There were never any picket lines set up outside those glittering arenas, many of them built with help from taxpayer money. Locked-out players never huddled around fire barrels to stay warm, worrying about how their strike pay will cover the rent.

Perhaps both sides should pause and think about that the next time they threaten to put hockey on hold.

Director responds to critic I would like to comment on the letter to the editor that appeared from Mark Treacy in your Friday, Jan 11, edition.

Treacy says he is a “resident,” but not in the local phone book. Online sources say he lives in Arizona.

His lot at 146 Crawford Road is empty with no house on it. A development permit application appeared at the Regional District in 2010 with Mr. Treacy’s name on it but he was not present when the permit was considered.

I distinctly recall asking where the applicant was and was told by our planning staff that he lived in the United States. Mr. Treacy got his development permit.

The report from staff clearly stated that Mr. Treacy would have the option of building on the lot at 146 Crawford Road and putting in a “package” system on the high point of this land, should the sewer project not be delivered. To date, there is no house on this lot and no one resides on it.

Done with care, we can have it both ways When I read last week that the U.S. is sending its Coast Guard to investigate oil tanker traffic coming into Vancouver, due to concerns about possible environmental damage to the San Juan Islands, I thought it a bit hypocritical.

The reason: for the past 40 years, about 500 oil tankers a year visit U.S. refineries just south of the border. No concern it seems about them, but if Canada wants to increase its volume, there’s suddenly an issue about potential oil spills?

Seems I’m not the only one who wonders about the anomaly of protest against Canadian shipment of oil while the massive vol-

umes transported adjacent to our waters are seemingly ignored.

While I was mulling over this topic, the Vancouver Sun’s Pete McMartin published a similar piece on Saturday.

Pete points out that not only is there Cherry Point just south of Boundary Bay, but two more refineries in Fer ndale and another two in Anacortes, all of which are in receipt of daily tanker traffic from, I’m assuming, Valdez and other Alaskan oil shipping points.

In addition, Cherry Point also receives Canadian crude via pipeline from Kinder Morgan – the evil incarnate to environmentalists in this area.

The City of Campbell River cancelled the project without discussion. That being said, they wanted more than twice what Area D taxpayers voted for and if a package system costs less than the “big pipe,� there is no logic to justify the Campbell River option.

I, along with many, many residents of Area D, have installed new treatment systems on our properties to protect the environment.

Area D has has opened several nature parks in our area, supported nine fish enhancement projects, overseen countless environmental hearings, studied mining plans.

I have personally put in hundreds of

volunteer hours on the recently-approved Water Use Plan and have contributed all kinds of other environmentally-beneficial initiatives and yes, I have been part of the Liquid Waste Management function with the former Comox-Strathcona Board and with Strathcona, too.

I have worked hard hard to try to get northern Area D sewers, against huge odds.

The problem is that I am not authorized to spend more than the people voted for on sewers. The buck stops at $9,350 per household and I seriously doubt that most people in northern Area D would be willing to even to commit to that much right now.

When Campbell River offered a sewer connection at more than double this cost, that is not what the people of northern Area D voted for. No one has any right to force residents to pay more than is authorized at referen-

dum on such an expensive project – not even Campbell River.

That’s the law in BC for any project that exceeds a threshold of $50,000 and has the potential to dramatically increase everyone’s property taxes.

I have been re-elected seven times and I am now in my 20th year as director of Area D, and I can count on my left hand the number of people who have actually ever complained to me about anything.

The vast majority of people in Area D are, very kind and cooperative and they know that I am doing my very best for them at all times.

I cannot spend $34 million if I only have o n e - t e n t h o f t h at amount of money allocated from the federal and provincial governments.

I cannot charge Area D residents for more than they have explicitly stated they were willing to spend.

I hope that this will

now put to rest any further nonsense from your newspaper about me, my reputation, my work and that my next note won’t have to be to my lawyer and the BC Press Council about your newspaper’s lack of judgement in its numerous attempts to defame.

Bump up the parks parcel tax, city staff say KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

City staff are recommending city council consider raising the Parks Parcel Tax twice over the next three years.

The recommendation falls in-line with community feedback into the city’s Strategic Parks Plan which was conducted in 2006 but followed up on in 2012 through a public survey.

City staff are suggesting the Parks Parcel Tax, which helps pay for park improvements and new projects, be increased to $50 for 2013 and 2014 and raised again to $60 in 2016 and beyond.

The parcel tax was just $25 this year, to help offset a 13.6 per cent residential tax increase, however, since the Parks Parcel Tax was established in 2006 it has been $50 each year.

“It seems from our (survey) respondents that there’s an ongoing public willingness to dedicate funds to parks and to focus the Parks Parcel Tax on facility improvements in the medium term,” said David Reid of HB Lanarc, the consulting firm involved in the Parks Plan. “The great majority is interested in $50 or $75 a year.”

The Parks Parcel Tax could remain at $25 for one more year and then be increased to $50 in 2014 and each year thereafter, or council could choose to keep the parcel tax at $25 for the foreseeable future.

Reid, at a council meeting in November, recommended council set the Parks Parcel Tax at $50 for each year until 2015 when it should be raised to $60.

He said that would be the only way to enable council to operate in the black without hav-

ing to cut programs.

Lynn Wark, the city’s parks project supervisor, said city staff ’s recommendation is based on what the public wants.

Can’t wait to get your hands dirty? Try making a herb spiral, the poster child project of permaculture-inspired gardening. The spiral design maximizes yield in minimal space with minimal effort, by using vertical space and creating multiple microclimates suitable for a variety of herbs.

Here’s how: ■ Choose the herbs you want to have in your spiral. For example, from top to bottom, you could plant: rosemary, oregano, thyme, borage, sage, lemon verbena, yarrow, Mexican tarragon, anise hyssop, chives, and basil. You could also add echinacea, chamomile, dill or

any other herb.

■ Plan each herb’s location in the spiral according to its needs for sun, shade and moisture (east side gets morning sun and afternoon shade; west side gets morning shade and afternoon sun; and the top of the spiral will be driest).

■ Locate the spiral as close to the kitchen as possible because you’re more likely to use it that way.

■ Place bricks or rocks along your outline. Remember to slowly increase the stacking height until the centre reaches about three feet high.

■ Fill the herb spiral with compost soil.

■ Wet soil thoroughly, and plant each herb in its correct spot.

When plants grow big enough, add mulch around them.

“We’ve been running our Avalanche Awareness Days for a number of years now in partnership with the Canadian Avalanche Association,” explains resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. “And in light of what we’ve seen lately in the headlines, we hope to see increased interest from skiers and boarders looking to learn more about how to do these activities safely.”

Mount Washington’s Avalanche Awareness Day will offer a variety of demos designed to introduce attendees to everything from technical backcountry gear to digging and analyzing snow pits.

A beacon race will add an element of fun to the event and give bragging rights to the fastest person using a transceiver.

“If there’s one key point we need to get across to any new backcountry user on Vancouver Island – it’s the fact that avalanches do happen here,” says Mount Washington Patrol Director Jesse Percival. “We perform daily assessments of snow stability and hazard and when it’s required we will perfor m control techniques that include ski cutting and explosive deployment.”

That happens within the resort but Percival warns about the potential dangers facing backcountry users.

“Once you head into the backcountry there are no safeguards in place. Good judgment, training and knowledge are essential for those considering backcountry travel.

Plus you should never head out alone.”

On Mount Washington, steeper terrain in the popular Outback and West Basin areas are part of the regular curriculum of avalanche control work.

Forecasters and Technicians to perform control work on the mountain. These Avy Techs are frequently used by Comox Valley Search and Rescue to assist in backcountry rescue.

Mount Washington Avalanche Forecaster Bill Phipps volunteered his time in the recent rescue last week in Strathcona Provincial Park. “ H av i n g t r a i n e d forecasters and technicians are essential in operating a mountain like Mount Washington,” says Percival.

“They assess and control the avalanche hazard within the resort and frequently support rescue efforts in the surrounding area.”

In the backcountry and beyond the patrolled boundaries of the Resort, the slopes are not controlled and this is where the greater risks exist for skiers and boarders.

“You need the proper training and tools to perform self-rescue when venturing into uncontrolled terrain,” adds Percival.

In addition to the demos, a silent auction will run on Sunday and offer guests a chance to bid on various items used for enjoying your time on snow.

The CAA uses the money to continue providing snow safety educational programs and maintenance of various avalanche bulletins for all regions of the province through the Canadian Avalanche Centre.

The problem was made public in November when Shoppers Row business owners Tricia Murphy and Michael Murphy wrote a letter to council complaining that their building, on

They said the roots of city-planted trees have g rown under their building, pushed the grout out of the sewer line connection and have gotten into the sewer line, creating blockages which lead to flooding. “We...ask that the city do something to remove their trees’ roots from under our building before serious damage occurs,� wrote the Murphys. “The current

situation is intolerable and completely unfair to us and our very patient tenants.�

Jakeway first put forward his motion at a council meeting Dec. 4 asking city staff to come up with a solution in response to the letter, however, the matter was deferred until Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. “I wanted them (the Murphys) to be assured we were aware of it so I brought it up at council,� he said.

Jakeway said he would like to see the city cut down one-third of the trees now while at the same time planting new ones, then five years later cut down another third, giving the new trees time to grow.

But Jakeway said he knows he’s not the only one making decisions. “I’m simplistic, I’d fix it,� he said. “But I’m not the dictator of the city.

I’m just the mayor.�

Jakeway said the trees are also creating

cracks in the brick sidewalks. Ron Neufeld, the city’s general manager of operations, confirmed in a downtown street lighting report to council last month that the sidewalks are being impacted by tree roots and need to be repaired or replaced.

Jakeway said he would like to see the city take action before the spring, so new trees can be planted if need be and the ones that need to go can be cut down.

Campbell River Chiropractor Dr. Janis Guthy is showcasing her recent photo-art and sculptures at the Tidemark T heatre until Jan. 29.

Dr. Guthy is a multim e d i a a r t i s t wh o works in areas such as painting, sculpture, and photo-art. While integrating her love for costume and set design, Dr. Guthy created a series of fantasy photo-art prints for this show. Her nine-foot winged Centaur and his partner add a phantasmagorical three dimensional aura to the display.

Dr. Guthy has been an artist most of her life, having published a series of limited edition prints, and having been represented by the Rubin Gallery in Chicago. Recently she graduated with a B.FA from Emily Carr University. Her website called, ‘guthy galleries’ will be active shortly.

Her art works can be viewed at the Tidemark Theatre between the hours of 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Drive Smart BC How Big is 2X14 2X14 BC’s Collision Problem?

Every year on the first of January I restart the collision counter on the DriveSmartBC web site. In order to try and keep it accurate I check ICBC’s latest collision statistics, calculate the daily average and tweak the code that produces the display. This year, I can’t get data on the number of people injured by impaired drivers.

I’m sure that you will agree that it is an important statistic to know.

Hoping for an answer, I contacted ICBC as they are the official keepers of the data. Sorry was the prompt response, since the provincial government removed the requirement to report collisions to the police in 2008 we can no longer provide that data. As ICBC does know how many collisions involve impaired drivers I find this answer somewhat suspect but it should still make us all pause and wonder. Are we losing touch with how often the bad things are happening on our highways?

Sneak Peak Into Precision to benefit local charities CR DanceXtreme’s Showteam will be performing at the Tidemark Theatre Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. to raise funds for two good causes.

The dancers are in rehearsals for Sneak Peek Into Precision, a preview performance of this year’s new competition numbers.

Tickets for this year’s Sneak Peek show, which will feature soloists and group numbers, are $25, with all

proceeds going towards the Campbell River SPCA and Cameryn’s Cause for Kids - a local non-profit society that provides financial support for families with a child facing a lifethreatening illness or injury.

Tickets for ‘Sneak Peek’ go on sale Jan. 22 at the Tidemark box office.

This is a chance for dance fans to see CR DanceXtreme’s latest in a variety of genres,

including jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, lyrical and modern stage. CR DanceXtreme’s Competitive Recreational dancers as well as the Boys’ Competitive Hip Hop program will also be performing.

The ‘Sneak Peek’ will launch the studio’s competitive dance season. CR DanceXtreme’s students will be traveling to Courtenay, the Lower Mainland and Las Vegas this year to compete against hun-

“We are very excited to show off what the students have been working on and to raise funds for two worthwhile causes,” said CR DanceXtreme co-owner and artistic director Shawna Sloan.

Co-owner and artistic director Buddy Mynatt said it’s the first time CR DanceXtreme has done a major fundraiser, and they

are hoping for a great turnout.

“If you’d like to see an entertaining evening of dance, and help two great groups who help the community, then this is the perfect night out,” Mynatt said.

I suspect that the main reason for the removal of the requirement to report collisions to police is the simple fact that there were just too darned many of them for the police to keep up with.

This alone is a bad sign. To me it shows that we don’t care about traffic safety because our insurance scheme will smooth things over and no one will really hurt too much. It’s just another day on the highway.

At minimum, the police should attend and report on all injury and fatal collisions. The causes of the collision should be determined and the violators held to account, both by the insurance company and the justice system. If there are no consequences for having a collision other than inconvenience there will be less incentive to drive safely.

RUDIGER, Karen E. June 28, 1944- January 2, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the unexpected death of Karen Elaine Rudiger at her home in Lake Cowichan, B.C. on January 2, 2013.

Karen was born in Prince Albert, Sask. on June 28, 1944 and was the daughter of Katherina (Sten) McTaggart and the late Ivan McTaggart.

Karen was predeceased by her husband Alfred Rudiger. She is survived by her three daughters: Shelley Sharuga (Dennis) of Medicine Hat, Alta., Jackie Rocha (Carlos) of Victoria, B.C. and Wendy Larson (Daren) of Campbell River, B.C.; two brothers Ernest McTaggart (Lynn) of Red Deer, Alta., and Allan McTaggart (Janice) of Saint John, N.B.; one sister Corrinne McTaggart of Williams Lake, B.C.; four adored grandchildren: Taylor Gibson, Jade Rocha, Alexandra Larson, and Boston Larson and many nieces and nephews.

Karen graduated from Lake Cowichan Secondary School. She was an avid curler and golfer as long as her health permitted and was very involved in her community. Karenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happiest times were spent camping with Alfred and her family. She spent many happy days in recent years in her motor home camping with family and many friends at Port Renfrew and other areas around the Island. She also loved to travel and experience the sights and cultures of many areas of the world.

Karen was a wonderful mother, oma, sister and friend to all who knew her.

She will be sadly missed by many.

Logging Fundamentals Training Western Forest Products Inc. is seeking applications from individuals who would like to be considered for positions in one of three 7-week programs in 2013 to train individuals interested in a career in the logging industry.

Utilizing the WorkSafe BC “Cable Yarding Systems” and “Grapple Yarder and Supersnorkel” Handbooks as a guide, the Program is designed to provide entry level logging skills.

Using a combination of classroom instruction and handon training at an instructional logging site, the students will learn the foundation skills of safety, environmental awareness, and job skills, necessary to be successful in both highlead tower and grapple yarding settings.

The Program will be taught at the Company’s Englewood Forest Operation, located 1.5 hours north of Campbell River and 1 hour south of Port McNeill.

Drinkwater will tune up players from six to 15-years-old.

With more than 35 years of playing experience and 29 years coaching experience, Ferrill will lead participants through ball hitting, throwing, fielding and conditioning drills.

With 20 years of hands-on experience, Drinkwater will pitch in on the art of pitch-

ing.

Sessions run Thursdays from Jan. 31 through Mar. 21 (5:45 to 7:15 p.m. for youth six to 10-years-old and 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. for youth 11 to 15-yearsold.

Pre-registration is required at the Community Centre or Sportsplex.

Along with physical activity and developing the love of sports,

the benefits of baseball and softball include developing hand-eye coordination and learning the valuable lessons of sportsmanship.

Players also have a chance to make new friends and maintain those friendships through the years by participating on an organized team.

Tyees overcome Nanaimoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hudson Bay rulesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; play The Campbell River No. 1 Autobody Bantam A Tyees hosted the Nanaimo Clippers last Friday in a hard-hitting, rough and tumble match.

The game was a real test for the Tyees on a physical and psychological level as Nanaimo has been playing by â&#x20AC;&#x153;modified Hudson Bay rulesâ&#x20AC;? to some extent.

The game started with Nanaimo trying to finish their checks and then some.

The Clippers took a penalty early in the game and were able to score a short-handed goal on Tyee goalie Dominik Bellefleur by utilizing their speed on a partial breakaway.

Both teams were battling for the puck and not shying away from contact. The first period ended 1-0 for Nanaimo.

The Tyees, though, were not going to be intimidated. T heir forechecking, combined with Nanaimoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s penchant for penalties, put the Clippers two men down.

The Tyees used the open-ice and moved the puck well.

Tyee Josh Coblenz delivered it to Brendan Hoff who put a howitzer on net. Sage Lim grabbed the rebound and scored a power-play goal to tie the game.

The Tyees then took the lead as Olivia Knowles scored from the point.

the score then took the lead as they enjoyed a two man advantage just prior to the mid-game ice cleaning.

Clean ice suits the Tyees well as they used it to generate pressure on Nanaimo. That resulted in another two man advantage during which Coblenz wired

the puck into the back of the net.

Tyler Dickson was rewarded for his efforts in front of the net as he re-established the Tyee lead.

The Tyees led 4-3 at the end of the second. Volunteers heard the Nanaimo coaches inform their players

that if they lost to the Tyee tabby-cats, they wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any pucks at their practice the following day.

This motivated the Clippers and they tried to return to the physical play they used earlier. The Clippers were able to convert a shorthanded counter-attack

to tie the score at 4-4.

Nanaimo sensed that they had the Tyees right where they wanted them. Unfortunately for them, they awakened the beast when they hooted and hollered after Hoff was caught by a body-check in open ice.

Rather than plead to

the referees for a call, Hoff circled back into the Tyee zone to follow the puck and received a pass from Dawson Frank and seemingly became a man on a mission. He broke into the Nanaimo zone with speed and tried to split the defence, taking the puck to the net. He got a good shot away but it was denied by the goalie.

C o bl e n z s aw t h e play develop and was Johnny-on-the-spot to bury the rebound to put the Tyees back into the lead, 5-4 with about two minutes left in the game. Final score 5-4 for the Tyees.

Sunday had the rejuvenated Tyees travelling to Bear Mountain Arena for a game against the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies. Though the Tyees outplayed the Grizzlies, JDF won the game 4-1 with the Tyee goal going to Coblenz.

The Bantam A Tyees travel to Nanaimo today to meet the Clippers and return home to host Victoria Racquet Club on Saturday at Rod Brindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Amour Arena at 4:30 p.m.
