Like most large organizations, Rotary International has its share of mission statements, and mottos that try to capture the spirit and purpose of its members.

Rotary stands by its “4-Way Test” as a model for ethical and moral conduct of its 1.2 million members in over 34,000 clubs. The “Service Above Self” motto has guided and influenced Rotary clubs in British Columbia for 100 years, positively impacting virtually every single BC community.

In Abbotsford, saying YES means building Rotary Stadium, one of our community’s premiere gathering places. It means building Rotary House, a learning facility for mentally and physically challenged pre-school children. It means paying off the mortgage for Abbotsford Hospice and doing significant fundraising for the new Campus of Care. It means providing scholarships to every single high school in Abbotsford as well as students at UFV.

But there’s one particular catch phrase that you won’t find in any of service club’s official material that gets passed around like a secret handshake. It’s simply this: “When Rotary asks, you say YES”.

Rotarians saying YES means turning strawberries into community playgrounds, turning golf balls into Sally Ann soup kettles and turning beer and sauerkraut into teddy bears and disaster recovery equipment for Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service.

From the global commitment to End Polio Now, Rotarians have raised millions and almost singlehandedly taken a global pandemic that killed tens of thousands to a disease on the brink of global elimination.

But its also seeing the flicker of hope in the faces of one single family that has lost everything.

It may mean wearing lederhosen or dirndl during Octoberfest, building new structures for disabled children at Zajak Ranch or even having your head shaved by professional hockey players during Cuts for the Cure. But in reality, what you’re really doing is building stories that you will retell for years.

Local Rotary clubs are always looking for new members to answer the call for the next 100 years. We’re looking for people open to learning the power of YES. Rotary is asking. Say YES. It’s an experience that will change your life.

Investing in our Community HUNDRED

When we think back over the years, there were many events that made us the individuals we are today. There are also major milestones that can be life-altering. Most of us go through life focused on family and career, however at some point we realize that we need to find ways to give back to our community.

We believe that joining Rotary is one of those life-altering moments. You may be asking yourself what is Rotary all about? What actually happens at club meetings? What do Rotarians do? Who are they? Why do we care?

Let me start by telling you about the club. Known as The Rotary Club of Abbotsford, it is the largest and oldest club in the city, celebrating its 63rd anniversary this year. The club consists of a diverse group of individuals from financial advisors to firefighters, from insurance brokers to investment bankers, in fact over 75 members from all walks of life. We meet every Tuesday at 12 noon for lunch. This is where we have the chance to build new business connections, friendships and plan on how we can give back to our community.

Through the strength of the club we have been able to achieve a number of significant goals over the last six decades. Over fifty years ago, this Rotary club partnered with the Abbotsford Flying Club and provided seed money to launch what is known today as the Abbotsford International Airshow.

With the help of corporate sponsors and the generosity of local residents, we have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for initiatives within our community; The construction of Rotary Stadium, a $3,000,000 sports facility, provided the capital funding for Rotary House pre-school, a learning facility for challenged pre-school

children, assisted the Abbotsford Hospice Society with $200,000 towards retiring its mortgage, donated $200,000 to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Care Centre, to purchase equipment and furnishings for the children’s area, donated $50,000 towards the development of Campus of Care – a unique facility housing Abbotsford Hospice, Matthew’s House and Canuck Place, donated $25,000 towards the publishing of an Epilepsy book for children, funding of a summer camp for 58 underprivileged children from Abbotsford through the Salvation Army.

Just recently more than 15 Rotary volunteers provided a safe ride home for party-goers on behalf of Operation Red Nose.

In addition, members of RCA committed to rolling up their sleeves and getting down to business at Zajac Ranch - a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, Discovery Trail – a volunteer ‘clean-up’ service, Safe Ride Home at the Abbotsford Airshow, & Mentorship in Schools.

RCA is committed to providing youth with opportunities to develop into tomorrow’s leaders. The club provides eighteen annual $500 Scholarships and Bursaries to graduating Abbotsford high school students.

RCA provides six fully funded placements for youth to attend adventure and leadership programs.

RCA has sponsored an educational program for students in Abbotsford. Participants of the new HERITAGE MINUTES video program vary in age from 9-14 years. Partnered with the Reach Gallery Museum, students will bring history to life within the video. Heritage Minutes will be available throughout the School District and to the general public.

President of Rotary International, Sakuji Tanaka, chose this year’s theme to be “Peace through Service”. “When we see the needs of others as more important than our own needs –when we focus on a shared goal that is for the good of all – this changes everything,” says President Tanaka. “It changes how we relate to the world. It changes our priorities. And it changes how we understand the idea of peace,” he says.

Since we are fortunate to live in such a peaceful part of the world, RCA also turns its attention to areas beyond our borders to help those less fortunate including a partnership with an organization called Rotaplast. This partnership provides corrective surgery for children with cleft lip and palate.

Overseas, we also support the End Polio Now campaign to eradicate polio from the world.

On behalf of all Rotarians a huge thank you must be given to you, the residents of Abbotsford. Without your support we would not be able to help those less fortunate.

The largest fundraiser of the year is the Rotary Million Dollar Hole In One. Over the last two years $50,000 in cash was presented to the Campus of Care, Abbotsford. The second fundraising event is Oktoberfest, now in its third year

It’s a disease that most of us note only once in our lives: at the time of a simple inoculation that few will even remember. And yet, when the first polio vaccine was introduced 57 years ago, it came at a time of fear and even panic.

Polio, short for poliomyelitis, is an infection that can affect nerve cells in the spinal cord. It can strike at any age, but mainly affects children under five years of age. Discovered by Jonas Salk, the vaccine staunched the march of a disease that was as terrifying as it was deadly.

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford – Sumas is known as the “morning club”. We turn strawberries into playgrounds, wheelchairs, and clean drinking water. We are dedicated to improving lives in our community and around the world.

We meet each Wednesday morning at 7AM at Cascades on DeLair Road. We meet here not only for the great breakfasts, but to assist the Salvation Army with their program to educate new chefs. This definitely fits in with our mandate of assisting local organizations.

Our Club supports literacy programs for disadvantaged youth in our community and around the world.

Our Club is somewhat unique in that we have a wide variety of ages and experience. We have members still in their twenties as well as a number of retired folks.

There is an infectious enthusiasm which is apparent as soon as you enter the meeting room. We are committed to making a difference in our own community as well as internationally. Our group participates fully in our projects, in fact, at our 2012 Strawberry Sale, we had 100% of our members present, even though it was very nasty weather!

The Abbotsford – Sumas Club focuses on children in almost every project we undertake. Our small club of 32 members has contributed over $163,000 in the past eight years towards building 10 playgrounds in our community, including; Berry Park, Mill Lake Park, Hoon

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui is a service club dedicated to improving lives of people, both in our community and around the world. Our club was chartered in 1985 and, although we number only about 25 members, our club is very active in providing service to the local and worldwide communities.

“OUR PROUD HISTORY HAS INCLUDED MANY PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.” Our club raises funds to support our projects through various events including our two major current fundraising initiatives, the Holly and Ivy Christmas House Tour as well as our annual Wine Festival & Silent Auction which will be celebrating its 18th year this coming spring.

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui’s Annual Wine Festival & Silent Auction is a fusion of many of the pleasures that abound in our community – art, food, music, fun and fine wine – along with an opportunity to give to a good cause. Some of the beneficiaries of the proceeds raised from this event include Abbotsford Hospice’s Campus of Care which brings together Hospice, Matthew’s House and Canuck Place. The funds raised from this festival have also been able to support both the building of Holmberg House and the Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association in recent years.

As a community service, our club has introduced the Abbotsford Environmental Leadership Awards event this past year. We believe that each of us, as individuals and

We also made and fulfilled a three year commitment to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre to provide them with $50,000 for a quiet room in the Palliative Care Centre.

Our Holly and Ivy Christmas House Tour, as the name would imply, consists of a tour of wonderfully decorated homes and businesses within Abbotsford and it is such a fun event. This past year we had themed homes (complete with actors!), over the top designs, decor and draw prizes for each venue. This event has provided the Food Bank with much needed funds these past few years.

One Hundred Years of Rotary in British Columbia 2013 Abbotsford Hospice Society Supporting the Process of Life Since 1986

in our businesses are responsible for doing our part to preserve and, if necessary, restore the environment and this event serves to recognize environmentally conscious business leaders in the Abbotsford community who are making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Our first, of what will be an annual event, was held last February to rave reviews.

The newest avenue of service within Rotary is New Generations, our youth. The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui is always very involved with the youth in our community, recognizing the positive change implemented by youth and young adults.

We currently sponsor five scholarships for Abbotsford high school students and award a scholarship to a UFV student annually. In addition to this, we sponsor local high school students to attend Rotary’s Adventures in Leadership as well as the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards retreat, both of which most students report back as “lifechanging” experiences.

Sometimes we are even in the presence of celebrity which happened recently when Global BC’s Senior Meteorologist, Mark Madryga, was our speaker. We’ve also experienced some excellent road trips recently, one of which included a tour of Coastal Pacific Aviation and their 747 flight simulator which proved to be a great time!

Throughout our meetings, we enjoy relaxed and informal fellowship with our fellow members, who come from a number of vocational disciplines.

As Rotarians, we have many opportunities to enjoy the fellowship of other Rotarians as we go about our fundraising activities and community service projects.

Relatively small in numbers, very big in service and outstanding in fellowship: that’s the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui, a fun club that gets results!

Internationally, the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui is an ongoing contributor to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and its work in eradicating polio worldwide. For several years, our club assisted in raising funds for and delivering wheelchairs to the disabled in Guadalajara, Mexico, where we also provided playground equipment and literacy supplies to a local school. We are currently in the planning stages of an international water project with the intent of improving health standards and quality of life.

OUR COMMITMENT TO LITERACY The Rotary Club of Abbotsford – Sumas strongly supports literacy in its many forms, both in Abbotsford and in a broader setting. While we participate in international projects, such as sending books to schools in third world countries, our particular focus is within BC and Abbotsford. We are a major sponsor of the annual Heritage Fair which is put on by the MSA Museum Society.

Students learn research skills through books, the internet, and by asking family members questions. The development of confidence through public speaking is as important as the written and visual components of these projects.

Our Club sponsors a “Scamper” program in our community. This is a summer literacy program for young students which takes place at the West Abbotsford Community School. We have sent books to libraries in smaller communities throughout BC which do not have libraries.

Our members are committed to continuing to support projects aimed at increasing literacy in our community. We feel that without competent literacy skills, our young people will not have the opportunity to become productive members of our society.

The Rotary Foundation, which each year provides some US $80 million for international scholarships, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian projects large and small that improve the quality of life for millions of people.
