This, he added, results in the highest case load per ofďŹ cer in Canada.

But more importantly to the taxpayers who live in this city, it means that we have to carry the burden for policing every protest — regardless of where the protestors come from. The same is true of the nightclub scene. It’s VicPd’s responsibility to keep the peace when the late-night revellers hit the streets after the bars close — regardless of which municipality the partiers call home.

Now this is nothing new, and Victoria taxpayers have grumbled but paid their annual property taxes without much fuss. But, year after year, the bill keeps going up and it’s hard to ďŹ nd someone who doesn’t feel that too large a share of their tax dollars is going to administration rather than into capital projects and infrastructure that both enhance and future-proof our city.

The Johnson Street Bridge is a classic example. Avoid maintenance long enough and eventually you’re going to have to replace the whole damn thing.

At that same community meeting, John Vickers of Amalgamation Victoria raised a few eyebrows when he talked about the lessons gleaned from Halifax’s amalgamation in the mid-1990s. “Halifax is a provincial capital with 390,000 people. They now have one mayor with 16 councillors,� Vickers said. In Greater Victoria, “we have 91 mayors and councillors representing our population of 360,000, and three school districts with 24 trustees.�

In case you don’t have your calculators handy, that’s a reduction in expenditures of 74 elected ofďŹ cials at the municipal level. Now add up the savings in amalgamated resources from street cleaning to accounting, not to mention elections, etc., and you start to see how amalgamation makes sense.

The bottom line is that the system as it stands now can’t keep raising taxes to pay the bills, because taxpayers simply don’t have any more to give. M

A SCRAPPY OUTLOOK ON LIFE It’s almost time to round up the scraps, as Victoria prepares to implement its new waste program.

Starting in mid-January, all households currently on the garbage-only waste program will be delivered a standard 120-litre “Green Bin,� a small kitchen catcher, a sized “Grey Bin� that each household selected this past summer, a “how-to� guide for the new program and a new collection schedule.

To anoint the event, the City of Victoria has received four new trucks that will pick up both kitchen scraps and garbage starting this February. The trucks will run on natural gas and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, all while enabling Victoria to keep kitchen scraps out of Hartland Landfill.

FINDING FILLIPOFF Emma Fillipoff turned 27 a weekend ago, but if or how she celebrated remains a mystery for the hundreds of locals, police and the mother who is still in Victoria looking for her.

More than 20 officers from VicPD have been on the case since Fillipoff went missing on Nov. 28.

While both police and mother Shelley Fillipoff have reason to believe she is likely still alive and in hiding, the VicPD diving team began searching the waters of the inner harbour last week. A number of tips and sightings have come in from the Langford and Metchosin areas, and Shelley is asking anyone with a shed or cabin to take a look inside and see if Emma is hiding out. She also asks those who believe they see Emma to go up and ask if it’s her, stating this is the only way they can get a confirmed sighting. “We are going back to square one and re-interviewing and talking to people again with very different kinds of questions,� she told media.

Fillipoff is expected to return as a cook at Red Fish Blue Fish on Feb. 1. If she does, Shelley says it will be the happiest day of her life. If not, she may consider heading home for a while after that. “I know it’s going to change the lives of many people [if she appears at work],� she says. “If she doesn’t show up, it just means the search must go on.�

‘Yes’ in my backyard FERNWOOD RESIDENTS NOW READY TO SUPPORT A FIXED-SITE NEEDLE EXCHANGE

fixed-site needle exchange can be described as nothing if not contentious, but thanks to support from residents in Fernwood, one will again find a home.

After Victoria’s only fixed-site needle exchange on Cormorant Street closed more than four years ago due to pressure from residents, it came as a surprise to many when the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) announced its

plans this past December to expand not one, but two health service hubs offering harm reduction services. Both “Hub One” at 713 Johnson and “Hub Two” at 1123 Pembroke will offer a needle exchange and more.

While many residents are still holding onto the not-in-my-back-yard (NIMBY) view, a growing number of Fernwood residents are in complete support.

“Anyone who finds a needle in their neighbourhood is going to be upset by it,” says Andrea Langlois. “I also think if a child or dog had ever been poked by a needle,

we’d have heard about it. What upsets me is that I think people are using the word ‘needle’ to really mean ‘a certain type of person’ isn’t welcome.”

Langlois has owned a home in Fernwood for three years. She is two blocks away from the Pembroke site.

“I moved to Fernwood because it’s an eclectic, inclusive culture,” she says. “We work with our neighbours.”

The Cook Street Health Unit was termed Hub Two with the December roll out. The new services will expand on those already in place, including addictions group counselling for those in early recovery, sobriety assessment, rehabilitation and skill-developing, and enhanced harm reduction supplies — including clean needles.

Clients can access primary care services on evenings and weekends, and will benefit from stronger connections to housing and support facilities, art and related activities, peer support and aboriginal services.

“As a parent of a six-yearold, we’re concerned about safety. These people [who use drugs] are a part of my community. They’re part of our fabric and I’m proud to tell my son, ‘this is how we treat people in our community,’” says Eric Kaye, four-year home owner and former director of the Fernwood Community Association.

On the subject of depreciating housing values, he adds, “I don’t buy it. I used to live across from a transitional house and no one even noticed it was there.”

But while the success of harm-reduction has been backed up with scientific studies, in a culture that condemns drugs and the people who use them, the fear NIMBY supporters are expressing makes sense.

“It’s important to note that harm reduction doesn’t condone drug use. It simply seeks to service a problem that’s already there. I’ve seen surveys that show people support these services by about 50 per cent, so I’m sure there are more people in Fernwood who are pro harm reduction and aren’t saying much because they are already in agreement with VIHA,” says Kathleen Perkin, Fernwood resident since 2005.

“This is a proven way to combat the spread of disease.”

Adverse reactions to the fixed-site needle service haven’t come from out of the blue.

City Coun. Lisa Helps can see why people are having a difficult time getting on board with VIHA’s plans.

“I actually completely understand where those opposed are coming from.

Cormorant Street was such a disaster.

That’s the picture people have [of a fixedsight needle exchange], but there are two significant differences with the Pembroke and Johnson Street locations,” says Helps.

“First, Cormorant was run by AVI [AIDS Vancouver Island] and it had far less funding. They had more and more people coming and could serve fewer and fewer.

Second, VIHA has had a complete change in perspective and began viewing this as a health issue. That’s the part I’m most excited about.”

Helps says she’s always thought access to these services was a health issue.

“It’s a health issue for drug users and it’s a health issue for those finding needles.

The entire model is [now] different,” she says. “It’s right in the name ‘Access Health Centre’ and it’s run by the Vancouver Island Health Authority.” M

Liberals have failed our seniors or those of you out there looking for reasons to return to the Liberal fold, I do not recommend that you read Ombudsperson Kim Carter’s BRIAN latest update on the KIERAN government’s pathetic bkieran@ efforts to do right by mondaymag.com our most vulnerable seniors in care.

Damning is the only way to describe Carter’s 35-page review of the government’s progress toward implementation of urgent system reforms she identified over a period of more than four years.

Premier Christy Clark’s “Families First” banner should be ripped from the Liberal flagstaff and burned in the village square.

Back in the summer of 2008, when Carter launched her systemic investigation into problems with seniors’ care, the ombudsperson captured the essence of the challenge in a sentence. “Seniors are part of a generation that had to do without and overcome adversity so they may be less inclined to complain.”

That reality was a compelling reason for government to step up to the plate ... as if it needed a reason to respect, nurture and

defend old folks.

Back in ’08, the ombudsperson’s office was responding to more than 50 individual complaints about seniors’ care including complaints about neglect in care facilities, accessibility of services, placement decisions, separation from spouses and the closure of facilities.

Carter’s investigation was published in two reports, the first being issued in December 2009. The final report issued in February 2012 was a 400-page opus containing 143 findings and 176 recommendations.

Carter said: “Our report focuses on key areas where significant changes should be made with many recommendations that can be implemented quickly. We need to provide a renewed commitment to some of the most deserving and vulnerable members of our communities; a commitment that focuses on their needs, listens to their concerns and respects their choices.”

It wasn’t as if Carter had blindsided the Liberals. Their neglect had been obvious for years. Many of the recommendations were no brainers and, as Carter pointed out, could be readily implemented.

Clearly, what was missing in the ranks of the optics-obsessed “Families First” Liberals was a will to tackle the mess they had made. And, now we find that will to do the right thing is still missing.

of the 176 recommendations. Are you sitting down? No less than 105 are flagged “no specific response received” (NSRR).

Another three are flagged “no progress” and just four are deemed “fully implemented.” The rest are “implemented in part” or “ongoing.”

What leaps off the pages of Carter’s update — beyond the staggering lack of progress — is the government’s refusal to address issues of accountability. For example: Recommendation #1 calls on the Ministry of Health to report publicly, in a way that is clear and accessible, the planned and actual results delivered by home and community care services — NSRR. Recommendation #26 calls on the ministry to work with the Solicitor General to ensure that all employees working with vulnerable adults have criminal record checks as a condition of employment — NSRR. Here’s one that will floor you.

Recommendation #30 calls on the ministry to require service providers to immediately notify the police of all incidents of elder abuse and neglect that may constitute a criminal offence — NSRR. If a community is measured, even in part, by its efforts to shelter and care for its most needy elders, then this community under the Liberals has failed miserably. For this breach of trust alone, the “Families First” bunch deserve to have their butts kicked at the polls. M

Disobedience will not be tolerated in Vancouver where the public is also barred from attending hearings, and in Bella Bella hearings were shortened after people dared to sing and dance near the panel judges. Much has been made of the spectacle and of the fear, and cries of “No Enbridge, No Pipeline” echoed throughout

The Capital last week. We’ve had glimpses of statements from more than 4,000 registered speakers, well over 200 in Victoria, all of whom have opposed the pipeline. We’ve heard about the threat of tar sands expansion, spills along the pipeline route, indigenous land rights being ignored, tankers hemorrhaging oil into pristine coastal waters, biblical devastation. We know deeply the gleeful ineptitude of Enbridge staff and executives who remain unapologetic after 804 spills in 11 years.

Much has been made of Enbridge, but we’ve heard little more of the sentiment expressed by Andrew Andy, elected chief of the Nuxalk Nation, whose band withdrew from the process after lamenting that the decision to approve the project had already been made by the federal government. While it may seem unthinkable that the Joint Review Panel could hear 4,000 unanimous voices of resistance and still come out in favour of the wanton destruction of our home, this remains a very real possibility. That our politics allow reality to be wilfully ignored speaks volumes.

Much has been made of one symptom while the disease is left to flourish. Affirmations of our collective desire to live and let live and protect what wilderness remains from endless plunder are losing themselves in the fevered mantra of “No Pipeline, No Enbridge.” M

Olio Artists and Workers Cooperative, CineVic Society of Independent Filmmakers and Victoria Makerspace help their members create some incredible things with extremely limited resources. But instead of continuing to do the best they can with what they have, they want to combine forces to create endless possibilities.

The three non-profits are launching an indiegogo fundraising campaign (indiegogo.com/interarts) to build the InterArts Community Centre for Creators, essentially a centrally located, one-stop workshop for all things that fall under the popular DIY label.

But instead of doing it yourself, as the acronym implies, the InterArts centre is more about doing things together — a centre, built by the community, for all-inclusive use and inspiration.

Skinner is also excited about opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaboration that the InterArts centre could provide.

“With all the construction and fabrication, there’s a possibility for set or art direction collaboration.”

SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING By combining the equipment, people and resources of each cooperative, InterArts could be an unprecedented opportunity to make almost anything, but how far the idea goes depends on the support of the community.

When MacDonald said those words in front of a sold-out crowd at a PechaKucha Night event in late November, the idea was met with cheers and applause — a strong indication that the creative community is craving a space to come together.

Whether you’re an aspiring woodworker or blacksmith who happens to live in a condo, a printmaker or filmmaker with no access to expensive equipment, a MacGyver type, or a fan of biohacking or playing with robots, the idea of InterArts could be the best thing since sliced bread. Better still if you can slice that bread with a laser cutter.

OLIO ARTISTS AND WORKERS COOPERATIVE

VICTORIA MAKERSPACE In 2010, Derek Jacoby created Victoria Makerspace (makerspace.ca), a community shared workshop in Central Saanich.

Members have access to a full woodshop fitted with a drill press, mitre saw, band saw, table saw, lathe, sanders, and more; a metalworking shop with a portable stick welder, an arc welder and mig welder, air compressors, bench grinders, etc.; a propane forge, anvils, hammers and a vice for blacksmithing; plus a 3D printer, soldering station, laser cutter and a vinyl cutter.

Vanessa Pattison heard about Victoria Makerspace through a networking group and decided to take a blacksmithing workshop. She was so impressed by the space and the organization that she became a member and has since become quite involved in marketing the organization.

As founder of the Vancouver Island Mini Maker Faire, Pattison is also connected in the maker community and has experience bringing creators together.

The benefit of InterArts, says Pattison, is the, “potential to have a go at all those things you thought were out of reach.”

For those at Victoria Makerspace, accessibility is a top concern. Their current location is hidden from the road and a 20-minute drive from downtown. Not exactly friendly to cyclists.

“It would be nice to have a proper presence downtown,” says Pattison. “Sometimes it feels a little forgotten about.”

As a keyholder member ($100/month), people can use the workshop, housed in a double garage on private land, to work on their projects at their leisure, 24/7. A level-2 membership ($50/month) buys access when the building is open or by appointment with a keyholder. Members can also drop-in ($20/day). There is an open house every Tuesday between 7-9pm.

Makerspace also offers various workshops, including introduction to the laser, Sat., Jan. 19, $50.

CINEVIC SOCIETY OF INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS For more than 20 years, CineVic (cinevic.ca) has been helping Victorians realize their visions in the medium of film.

Located in a 1,000-square-foot, second-floor space in Victoria’s historic Chinatown, Olio Artists and Workers Cooperative (oliocooperative.ca) is a studio gallery and printmaking cooperative offering tools, space, workshops, supplies and exhibition opportunities to local artists.

For $30 a year, members have access to printmaking equipment, textile and flatstock screenprinting shop, button makers, large format printers, textile supplies and studio facilities.

“The space has always been big enough for what we do, but never big enough for what we want to do,” says Olio director Joey MacDonald.

“When Olio started, there always was the intention to expand,” says MacDonald. “We’ve always had space and capacity limitations … we want to take what we already do and improve on it.”

On top of the printmaking equipment, Olio also owns two Chandler & Price letterpresses, a Challenge proofing press, an Exclesior platen press, a hot foil press, a type bank and a healthy lot of binding equipment, which they plan to put in the InterArts space.

Modelled after similar community arts co-ops in places like Portland, InterArts would provide Olio members with access to more equipment and to inspiration from members of the other groups.

“Makerspace has a laser cutter and we have a letterpress,” says MacDonald. “As soon as I started thinking about the possibilities working with other groups, it made less sense for us to do it on our own.”

CREATE AND DESTROY “Only for works of personal expression,” says executive director Bryan Skinner. “Not for commercial projects.”

In all, CineVic helps create between 50-70 individual projects each year in Victoria. Membership fluctuates between 90-120 members annually.

The artist-run coop recently stepped into the world of 4K digital cinema with the acquisition of a RED Scarlet camera.

“It’s the baby brother of the Red Epic camera they used to shoot The Hobbit,” Skinner boasts like a proud parent.

“We’re agnostics when it comes to medium. We try to support both.”

CineVic recently partnered with the Victoria Film Festival to purchase a new HD deck and projector (now at the Vic Theatre), which are available for rent to its members.

The society also offers production insurance ($2,000,000 general liability, $187,000 equipment liability) to its top level members for $150 for 10 consecutive days, something Skinner says would cost five times more commercially. They offer numerous workshops on writing, editing, cinematography, post-production and working with actors throughout the year and host a number of community film competitions and events (including the upcoming Short Circuit Short Film Festival, which just opened its call for submissions).

Membership allows you to rent equipment, but it also provides access to a network of likeminded individuals.

At this point, InterArts is only an idea, how far that idea goes depends on community support and donations. The current fundraising goal is $45,000, which would allow for some pretty amazing opportunities; not only would there be a huge multidisciplinary workshop, but there’s also talk of affordable office space for other non-profits, as well as professional workshop space (with banks of computers equipped with software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator), resident artist studios, a cafe and gallery space.

The fundraising campaign for InterArts is officially launching Sun., Jan. 20 at 7pm at The Atrium (800 Yates, courtyard).

Incentives for donating include handmade “Create and Destroy” screenprints and T-shirts, as well as custom desk lamps and furniture, all by local makers.

Contingents from each arts co-op will be in attendance with demonstrations and information about what they do.

Victoria Makerspace is said to also be working on some lasercut appies, and Monday cover photographer Casey Bennett will be ready with an interactive photobooth.

Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

“If this idea works, it will benefit everyone,” says MacDonald. “It will benefit people who have never done art and will benefit people who do art for a living. It will make stuff easier, but I don’t think easier is what we want. I think more productive is what we want. We want more.” M

One win for all cannabis-kind DESPITE HISTORIC RULING, MARIJUANA GROWERS NOW FACE NEW HURDLE historic court decision has dropped all drug charges against the former baker of the Cannabis Buyer’s Club — a win that is likely to have ramifications across the country, according to the club’s lawyer. But despite the good news for marijuana advocates, a new battle has now crested the horizon.

Club baker Owen Smith was officially acquitted in the B.C. Supreme Court in Nanaimo on Thurs., Jan. 10. While the case is expected to head DANIELLE POPE to the B.C. news@mondaymag.com C o u r t of Appeal, Smith’s lawyer Kirk Tousaw is pleased with the prospect, stating that a Court of Appeal ruling affirming Thursday’s decision could have a far-reaching impact. “We’ve been very excited with the progress in the court hearings, and now Mr. Smith is forever able to say that he was found not guilty — he is not a criminal in helping other Canadians,â€? says Tousaw. “A ruling from the B.C. Court of Appeal has an affect on all courts across Canada ‌ this would really enshrine patients’ rights.â€?

The now 30-year-old Smith was charged back in December 2009 after the manager of the Chelsea apartments on View Street complained to police about a “strong, offensive smell� wafting through the building. Officers obtained a search warrant and recovered substantial quantities of cannabis-infused olive and grapeseed oil, as well as pot cookies destined for sale through the Cannabis Buyers’ Club.

Though Smith’s trial began a year ago on Jan. 16, 2012, it moved into a voir dire — a trial within a trial — to allow Tousaw to challenge the validity of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act regarding medical marijuana. Tousaw argued that it was a patient’s right to chose how to ingest the substance and that it was unconstitutional to not allow dry marijuana to be rendered into oils and other substances for medical purposes.

Smith, who stepped down from his position as club baker shortly after he was charged, has been maintaining a role in the club by contributing to its regular newsletter and working on illustrative and social media campaigns. While he may not be baking, he intends to continue participat-

ing in the club and says he is thrilled that the ruling has “broadened his horizons,â€? especially regarding travel, now that he won’t be subject to a criminal record. “The club is constantly transforming and adapting as needs change, and I imagine so will my role,â€? says Smith. “I’m not sure what my future holds ‌ but today I’m really happy.â€?

Celebrations aside, the club is already starting its campaign to object to the proposed regulation scheme put forward last month by Health Canada. The proposal, entitled Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR), would move cannabis production away from residences and into spaces operated by commercial producers. Health Canada representatives have stated this move will reduce crime in neighbourhoods and make it easier for police to control illegal grow-ops, but club representatives say this would remove patients’ ability to grow their own medicine, especially if they wish to use a particular strain of cannabis that is suited to their own condition. The proposal could also mean that medicine will cost patients who grow their own several times more than it currently does. “Taking away a patient’s right to grow is abysmal, and though we support the idea of a commercial industry, we’re very con-

cerned about these proposed changes,� says Ted Smith, who is not related to Owen.

The government will stop issuing growers licenses on Oct. 1, with the new regulations scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2014. Smith has organized a rally in front of the legislature for Feb. 21, which falls inside the 75-day public consultation period that allows Canadians to pressure officials on the matter.

ancouver-raised, Island-based singer-songwriter Chris Ho has come a long way from his “reclusive years” writing and recording music at home and handing it out to friends.

With an EP under his belt and his first LP on the horizon, 2013 could be a time of harvest for Ho. City of Dust is a 12-track collection of songs by a confident Ho, taking charge and taking chances with a more complete sound.

Ho released the single “No Connection” months ago, but don’t let its upbeat folk-pop sensibility fool you — it’s not an album full of pop songs.

“No Connection” is a more mature follow-up to “Depending on the Day” and his Answers EP (April 2011), with bleak lyrics matched with a sense of sunny optimism. I was singing along halfway through my first listen.

hat happens when a Toronto city boy and a Salt Spring Island farm girl decide to get together and create something? Clay pigeons, obviously!

“I hated kale growing up, but I had parents who wanted to grow what they ate. We ate kale all winter,” she says.

While Laplante is a west coaster by birth, co-owner Jeff Weatherhead hails from Toronto and started his restaurant career at the Alberta Fairmont’s Banff Springs Hotel as their porter in 1988. Then, in 1992, after a brief return to Toronto, the west coast beckoned once more.

This time it was Victoria where he worked at Harvest Moon Café as an assistant manager and bar manager. As many newcomers report, finding a job without an Island connection was a challenge.

“I couldn’t find anything, but I am also a blackboard artist so I started doing the blackboards for restaurants all over town. That’s how I met the folks at Harvest Moon.” Harvest Moon led to work at Rebecca’s, Santiago’s and 4 Mile Pub until 1996 when he was once again Toronto bound.

As for Laplante, she’s been in the business for awhile. “I prefer to live in the now.” It’s still worth mentioning the before. The kitchens of catering companies, hotels and restaurants in cities like Vancouver, Switzerland and Los Angeles have help mold an adventurous culinary point of view.

Be it the chicken skin “bacon” that comes with the chicken salad, bison tongue’s from Vancouver Island Bison in Comox, the intriguing use of pig ear or the ’80s inspired deviled eggs, Laplante has a few rules: use the whole animal, honour the egg and look at ingredients differently. Some rules like no Hollandaise and no Italian aren’t taken quite as seriously. “We’ve broken both of those,” says Laplante when Weatherhead presents the supposed decrees. This isn’t the first time these two have worked together. Their bond formed in the fiery kitchens of yesteryear. Back in March, when Weatherhead and the two owners of the Pink Bicycle decided to partner on a new project that would come to be named, The Clay Pigeon, they reconnected once again. So, why the name?

“It’s completely random except for the TCP. Taking Care of People.

It’s our staff slogan,” says Weatherhead.

Like any new business, the tale isn’t all crispy oyster dreams and sparkling Prosecco-laced kisses on tap, though both can now be enjoyed at your leisure.

There have been growing pains. Mad dashes to the Pink Bicycle next door for supplies (or to remedy staff poutine withdrawal), gaining community trust at a location that’s been a revolving door of businesses, and managing the chill of winter weather for patrons closest to the door to name a few.

Weatherhead’s father also passed a week after opening. He remembers the pride his father felt listening to the flurry of restaurant activity that first week over the phone. With Weatherhead’s trans son (whom he couldn’t be prouder of) working in the kitchen, three generation’s of Weatherhead men have taken pride in taking care of people at The Clay Pigeon.

Role of a lifetime DRAMA SHOWS ANOTHER FACE OF COMEDIC ACTRESS

hen professional actor Kirsten Van Ritzen heard the Victoria Theatre Guild was mounting the Western Canadian premiere of Polly Stenham’s That Face at Langham Court Theatre, she knew she had to audition for the role of Martha, even if it is community theatre.

“It’s kind of the role of a lifetime,” says Van Ritzen, who had to get permission from the actors’ union to take part in the production.

Van Ritzen is widely known for comedic roles, including Sin City: The Live Improvised Soap Opera, which opened Tuesday at the Victoria Event Centre.

“As an actor, I can say I’ve done 12 hours continuous performance, or 34 hours out of a 52 hour show.

I once did eight different plays in two different cities in one week. Opening two shows in one week, that’s on the list. Two very different shows and yet they’re both in England coincidentally.

“I think it will be interesting because people in Victoria think I’m a comedian, but I went to theatre school. I’ve been a professional actor for 20 years. I’ve done a number of dramas, although I usually choose to do comedy.”

But Martha is no laughing matter. She’s a pill-popping alcoholic nightmare mother to a dysfunctional family of four.

“She’s everything,” says Van Ritzen. “She’s an alcoholic. She has moments of lucidity, moments where she’s the life of the party, and moments where she’s completely cruel and over the top … We’re yelling and screaming and letting it all out on stage.”

That Face continues the trend of mounting controversial plays at Langham Court, and this one isn’t for the faint of heart “or anyone who believes all families are perfect,” says director Judy Treloar, who was awestruck by the play after seeing a production in New Zealand. “So brave men, women and teenagers only.”

And there’s no shortage of F-bombs, either.

As a professional actor, Van Ritzen is more accustomed to a three-week, full-time rehearsal schedule and admits that “Martha has driven her [me] a bit bonkers.”

“It’s a weighty piece and I’m very detail-oriented, so I’ll have an idea about something, but I can’t bring it forth right away because we don’t have rehearsal

for four or five days.”

Before Van Ritzen even had the role, she contacted Michael Bell to see if he would be interested in playing the role of Martha’s drop-out/caregiver son Henry. Van Ritzen also played his mother in Kaleidoscope Theatre’s production of Hana’s Suitcase in 2011.

“We have a trust. I’ve known him since he was 14,” says Van Ritzen. “This play demands that we have a great deal of trust in one another.”

Third-year UVic playwriting major Melissa Taylor plays Martha’s 15-year-old daughter Mia, who was recently kicked out of private school for drugging another student (with her mother’s drugs).

“The three of us carry a great deal of the emotional weight of it,” says Van Ritzen. “It’s been a journey.”

Taylor worked with Treloar on 1959 Pink Thunderbird Convertible and was asked to read the role of Mia in a group read weeks before auditions.

“The first time I read it was out loud, in front of Judy,” she says with a laugh. “The play is so great. I knew I needed to audition.”

But she almost didn’t go due to an overwhelming course load at school. With 30 mins left in the audition time, she hopped in her car and drove to the theatre.

When she arrived, Treloar was standing outside, the theatre locked. But even though she missed the audition, Treloar invited her to callbacks.

“I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle it if I saw someone else playing that part,” she says. “It’s different. The writing style is so raw and so honest. It’s not this piece of polished theatre from a playwright who has been doing this for years. This was her first play and it shows, but shows in a good way. She really encapsulates emotions and darkness that I feel to an extent that everyone goes through, but it’s on a grander scale. She really speaks to the struggle that young people go through and how hard it is to be taken seriously and to show your strength as a young person …She shows the flaws and the insecurity, but also the strength beneath that.”

The production also stars Michael King as father Hugh, Kathryn Taddei as Izzy and Michelle Watt as Alice.

The creative team includes set design by Lisa Preston, lighting design by Adam Wilkinson, costume design by Nicole Bobick,stage manager Rose Jang, assistant to the director, Lynn Cadrain and producer Paul Gillan. M

Bring on the bubbly! If you’re down near my pay grade, then “Method Champenoise” is the way to go. In the $14-$16 range, I give top marks to Spain’s Freixenet Cordon Negro and France’s Veuve du Vernay. Add $10 and you can’t go wrong with Stellar’s Jay (B.C.) or Chandon (California). And if you insist on the real thing, then Pol Roger (at $66) has finesse and charm to spare.

The price of vengeance ZERO DARK THIRTY MAKING A KILLING ith five Academy Award nominations, the gritty let’s-killOsama film Zero Dark Thirty is making its own killing at the box office.

And notwithstanding the controversies — experts say the film’s claim that torture eventually led the CIA to Bin Laden is false; other critics opine that director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal were “seduced” by the CIA into making pro-Agency propaganda — this is undeniably a wellcrafted and serious-minded film. And not only does Dark never indulge in jingoistic cheerleading, but any film that provokes a dialogue on the subject of the CIA’s torture policies is a good thing.

In many ways a “police procedural” set within the arcane world of the CIA, Dark begins with actual voices recorded during the nightmare of 9/11. It then jumps ahead a few years to a so-called “black site” in the Middle East where an Arab male with ties to al-Qaeda is strung up by ropes while being roughly interrogated by a CIA operative (Jason Clarke, in what could be a star-making role).

This is where we meet Maya (Jessica Chastain, Tree of Life), a young, pretty, and whip-smart CIA analyst. At first she looks unlikely to stomach the proceedings — especially the horrific waterboarding — but Maya overcomes any scruples and even helps out.

The long middle of the movie chronicles the next seven years that Maya continues what becomes a personal quest to track down Osama bin Laden. Early on she becomes convinced that the key is a shadowy courier that no one seems to know anything about. Maya’s bosses become fed up with her obsession, which has led nowhere. And then other terrorist outrages — including the London bombings in 2005 and

the 2008 Marriott Hotel bombing in Islamabad — put the hunt for bin Laden on the backburner.

As Maya reviews endless hours of footage of interrogations for clues to her mysterious courier, she seems to get somewhere only to run into dead ends. But then comes a possible breakthrough and Maya bullies her colleagues and bosses into full-on surveillance. Eventually they identify the courier, but it then takes weeks to trace him to a walled compound in northern Pakistan. It is only informed guesswork that bin Laden lives there, and it takes months of lobbying to get Washington politicians, the CIA, and military brass to consider mounting a secret and highly illegal raid. This becomes the climax of the film, as two stealth helicopters swoop at low altitude through the mountains of Pakistan carrying a payload of SEAL commandos whose combat gear and nightvision goggles make them appear inhuman. The next half-hour is fascinating as it depicts a methodical, sometimes-flawed operation that is nothing like the slick “black ops” we have seen in a hundred Hollywood action flicks.

The character of Maya is based on a real person, and we never learn anything about her private life — it almost seems possible she doesn’t have one. What is clear is that 10 years of hatred has damaged her soul and transformed her into an eager killer-by-proxy. Tough-minded, tension-filled, and dispassionate as regards the CIA, Dark deserves its status as an Oscar frontrunner. M

PREVIEW: IN ORGANIC WE TRUST raveling from California to New York, In Organic We Trust director R. Kipling Pastor explores the confusing and often frustrating system of organic certification in the United States. The result is at times disheartening and at others hopeful as America’s food system is shown to reflect larger cultural values — and they’re changing.

As we learn, certified organic products in the U.S. require a minimal level of compliance with farming practices, including the absence of pesticides. The philosophies associated with organic farming, however, may not be met. Philosophies like crop rotation, sustainable land use and minimal food travel distances are not necessarily held by the organically certified to be self-evident.

These are some of the points explored by Pastor’s personal exploration of our changing world of food production. What the experts in his film advocate is simple. We need a food system of the people, by the people and for the people. As always, that begins with education.
