Slater was told that the Liberals thought a new candidate would have a better chance of winning the riding.

“I’ve put a lot of work into this riding, I feel that I did a good job for

the members of the Boundary-Similkameen and I’m a little bit hurt,” Slater told the Grand Forks Gazette. “But they made their decision and they’ll have to live with it.”

Slater said he is undecided if he’ll run again in May’s provincial election but will sit as an independent until then.

“I haven’t quite thought that through,” he said when asked if he would run again. “I’ll keep working in my riding. There’s still stuff to be done. How effective I’m going to be is a big question. If they’re shunning me and they’re not going to give my riding any money, that’s bad.”

Slater is also disappointed that the party waited until now to inform him of its decision not to endorse him.

“They could’ve told me in September that they

didn’t want me. Why wait that long? I just ttdon’t get that,” he said.

There have been reports the Liberals approached former Oliver, B.C. Coun. Linda Larson to run and in fact, Larson was said to have announced she will seek the party’s nomination as Slater’s replacement.

A call to the Liberals’ office in Vancouver was not immediately returned however; in a statement, the Liberals said Slater’s candidacy was not approved due to “personal issues.”

Last week, Sam Oliphant, a spokesperson for the B.C. Liberals, told the Gazette the party was close to having all MLA candidates nominated. “There’s no drop-date or anything like that, it’s a matter of just working through that process between here at the central party and with the riding and the other people involved,” Oliphant said.

Legal bill questioned Concern about breach of confidentiality

Greenwood Mayor Nipper Kettle sought legal advice late last year in what he believed to be a breach of confidentiality by another member of council.

The matter came to light on Monday night when Councillor Darla Ashton raised a question about a cheque for legal services for $600.82. The reason listed for the payment was “legal services requested by the mayor.”

“There was an issue about a breach of confidentiality and I asked for a legal opinion on it,” said Kettle in response to Aston’s query.

Kettle added he was acting to protect the community.

The alleged breach occurred when in camera information was given out to council three or four days before a scheduled meeting.

Apparently Councillor Barry Noll contacted the proponent before the meeting. He later reported the conversation to council.

According to Kettle the lawyer’s reply involved a technicality.

“The lawyers’ report said it [the agenda item] did not qualify for an in camera meeting. But it was put out on confidential paper.”

The argument goes back to comments made by Kettle at the November 26, 2012 meeting when he stated he didn’t feel he could trust Noll. Noll has since asked twice for an apology.

Kettle has stated he didn’t agree that he needed to apologize.

“Your worship – you know in the interest of the cohesion of this council I am going to tell you something,” said Ashton.

However, before she could finish, Kettle cut her off.

“Okay I will offer you my apology for my outburst in a little bit of heated debate,” he said.

After the meeting Kettle said the matter was closed that no other actions were ongoing.

Council scheduled an in camera meeting for Tuesday to clear the air, but details of that meeting were unavailable at press time.

GREENWOOD COUNCIL

Feist first order of business

Village of Midway council’s first meeting of the year began with the swearing in of Penny Feist as director of corporate administrative services, chief administrative officer and director of financial administrative services. *** The Kettle Valley Racing Association (KVRA) sent a letter requesting use of the airport runway for the 4th Annual Snowmobile Drag Race, scheduled for Feb. 2.

The letter noted that last year the event attracted a crowd of over 150 people with some 40 entrants in six racing classes. Supported by over 50 sponsors, the race was able to award over $1,200 in prize money in 2012.

Organizers also received permission to use the electronic bulletin board at the library to advertise the event and put out a call for volunteers for help on race day.

The village also granted permission for race organizers to use the village generator for the day. *** John Coburn, co-ordinator of West Boundary Road Rescue (WBRR), came to council asking their help in getting dispatch policy amended such that road rescue would be sent out on all motor vehicle incidents (MVI).

Coburn made himself available at the meeting to answer questions that council might have about a letter he had sent to Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Chief Terry Martin. The letter cited an accident that WBRR was called to in Kettle Valley on Dec. 14, 2012.

Coburn was concerned that the road rescue unit had been called out “some 38 minutes after the Midway Volunteer Fire Department and perhaps 60 minutes after BCAS and RCMP.” Upon arriving at the scene, WBRR set one member on flagging duty to control traffic while the remainder of the crew assisted with moving the patient from the field to the ambulance.

Coburn asked council’s help in ensuring that road rescue is called out for every MVI in the assigned territory.

“We do more than extrication,” Coburn told council. “We make sure the scene is safe.”

Mayor Randy Kappes and council were in agreement that the topic would be raised with Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB)

emergency services staff at a meeting later in the week.

It was suggested that there also be a meeting involving RCMP, ambulance and fire to get their input on protocol and procedure that should be in place.

Kappes asked Coburn to keep council informed if he heard any more from those he had written to. *** With the recent awarding of a new contract for the regional district’s animal control officer, it has come to pass that the village no longer has its own animal control officer.

In recent years the service in Midway was provided through a private contract between RDKB animal control officer Craig Caruso and the village; however, when a new individual won the contract with the regional district, Midway was not included because they are not officially part of the regional district service.

Administrator Penny Feist said she was working with the regional district to determine the costs for the village to opt into the animal control service.

Another option would be to again contract privately with the RDKB animal control officer.

It is expected that the issue will be before council again at their Jan. 21 meeting.

In the meantime the village is asking all residents to be in compliance with the dog control bylaw. *** Councillor Darrin Metcalfe had missed the previous meeting and told council he was disappointed with the airport hanger renovation decision they had made in his absence. “We’re all about trying to save money and do things properly. I don’t see the reason why we should have taken the higher quote for $2,600 more,” said Metcalfe. The contract was awarded to a Midway resident over a contractor from the Okanagan.

“I wasn’t here to vote on that but I just think that was crazy. But that’s what happens when you miss a meeting.” *** Councillor Marguerite Rotvold reported she has been appointed chair of the Boundary Economic Development Committee, with Greenwood Councillor Barry Noll as vice-chair.

Race Trac Gas adds Corner Deli

Greenwood Race Trac Gas has opened a new hot food bar in the store.

Gerry and Christi Shaw, both born and raised in the Boundary, bought the business in 2000. In the last 12 years they have grown and developed their business.

Greenwood Race Trac Gas offers fuel, propane, groceries, confectionary, U-Haul, auto repairs by a certified mechanic, metal recycling and auto-wrecking.

The business employs 10 people from the area. Their most recent addition is their Corner Deli, selling everything from homemade soup to fresh baked pizza. “Gas stations are now offering hot food so we thought we’d follow suit,” offered Christi.

“Gerry has always wanted to work in the food industry (a restaurant). So finally, he has his opportunity.”

“We’ve been working on this for a little over five years,” explained Gerry. They started the transition by adding a wellstocked grocery section offering a wide selection of grocery items including fresh produce and a great selection of frozen foods. “Part of the plan was to offer a hot food menu,” Gerry said. “But time and funds were a factor. But finally, we have got it up and running!’

The couple make a good partnership.

Gerry refers to Christi as the brains and the boss of the outfit. “She does all the planning and makes sure everything runs smoothly,” he said.

Although she has a background in administration, she enjoys working with the public. She is a people person. Gerry is the main cook, preparing home-made soups with fresh baked buns and biscuits, fresh deli sandwiches, and pizza. Chicken wings, dry ribs, hot dogs, egg rolls and chicken pot pies are also available.

The menu continues to develop as they find out what people really enjoy. Currently pizza is available by the slice, but they hope to offer whole pizzas to be enjoyed onsite or as take-out in the near future.

They have a seating capacity for 20 patrons. Since putting in the tables they have become a regular morning coffee spot for several Greenwood residents. To help serve

that morning crowd they offer breakfast burritos, burgers and wraps, as well as bagels with cream cheese – toasted if you like.

Their two teenage children are now old enough to work, and have joined the family business working in different areas as they are able.

Race Trac Gas also contributes to its local community. Gerry has coached kids sports ever since their kids have been old enough to play, baseball, soccer and hockey. Christi assists him in any way needed.

They have a collection bin for bottles and cans at Race Trac Gas. The proceeds go to Greenwood Youth Sports for such things as equipment and registration fees for kids.

Christi said they have become Greenwood’s “Pit Stop for Groceries and More”.

Hours of operation are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the winter and in the summer they are open until 9 p.m.

“Planning and preparation is huge for us because it’s all new,” said Gerry. “So we’ve got to try it, make sure it works, and then put it in our plan.”

“We want to succeed, so little bit by little bit is how we will get there,” Christi agreed. Christie and Gerry Shaw invite everyone to stop by and check out their new Corner Deli.

SD51 promotes Lacey to director KARL YU Grand Forks Gazette Editor

Doug Lacey has been promoted to School District 51’s (SD51) director of learning.

Lacey, currently principal of Hutton Elementary School in Grand Forks, will assume his new post effective July 1.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of moving our district forward as director of learning,” Lacey told The Gazette.

“As a member of the senior leadership team, I am excited to work with the staff, administrators, parents, and interested community organizations and members of each school in SD51 and with school board

staff and our school district trustees.”

Lacey represents the second administrator from SD51 that has been promoted, with Perley Elementary principal Kevin Argue succeeding superintendent Michael Strukoff at the same time Lacey assumes his new position.

“The board is very pleased to welcome Doug Lacey to our senior management team,” explained SD51 board chair Teresa Rezansoff in an email. “We are proud to have been able to promote from within our existing rank of administrators.”

Lacey will continue as Hutton principal until June 30.

He was also the principal of Christina Lake Elementary previously.

Junior Initiation predators will travel to Grand Forks for their tournament from Jan. 25 to 27.

On Sunday, Jan. 27 back on home-ice in Midway: Midgets vs. Trail 2 the game starts at 9:45 a.m.

The distribution of Christmas hampers has become a tradition for the Kettle River Lions Club.

This year 128 single and family boxes were prepared and delivered; most of them on Dec. 22.

The list had addresses from Bridesville, Rock Creek, Midway, Greenwood, Westbridge and Beaverdell. The hampers contain items from prepared soup in tins to items to cook a meal for a family, including potatoes and ham.

The Lions appreciate the help they are getting in collecting food from the community and schools.

Businesses had displayed collection boxes to gather food from their customers. The Boundary schools had a contest to see who could provide the Lions with the greatest poundage of food.

It is always good to see the members of the Kettle River Lions and helpers to gather, sort, fill and organize the boxes by routes and use their own cars to make sure that a little bit of Christmas cheer is delivered to the needy. Many community members contribute financially to the hamper fund and the Lions purchase additional food locally. It all is appreciated.

Slap in the face The announcement of John Slater’s resignation from the B.C. Liberal Party and his intention to run as an independent candidate in next Mays’ provincial election casts a spotlight on a structural flaw in our democratic system.

Slater had expected to represent the Liberals in a run for a second term. But the party refused to endorse his candidacy papers, which he filed last September.

When, after waiting more than two months, Slater pushed the party for a reply the party’s response was negative.

The damage from this announcement runs through the Boundary-Similkameen Liberal Association as well. Riding president Zach Poturica announced his resignation from the executive (but not the party) on Monday. He tweeted that others had resigned their seats on the riding executive as well.

Poturica has told the press that the riding executive never considered replacing Slater and had been working to get the party to endorse him after the papers were filed in September.

There’s always a disconnect between what is and what should be. But this process of candidate selection starts off completely upside down.

Democracy 101 tells us the governed get to select the person they send to represent them. Of course the way the game is rigged doesn’t guarantee citizens much input in the intervening years between elections, but at least every four years or so we get some say in the hiring and firing.

When Slater ran for the office in May of 2009 he said he would represent the constituency to Victoria – not the other way around.

The way the provincial executive is going about this whole thing is a slap in the face to both the Democracy 101 principal and the pledge that John Slater made in the 2009 election.

Grade 8 girls take tournament title The BCSS Grade 8 Girls Basketball team got their 2013 season off to a fantastic start by winning a tournament in Osoyoos last Saturday.

Despite having lost their first game Friday night against Armstrong the girls beat both Princeton and Osoyoos on Saturday, placing them first in the tournament.

According to coach Heather Slaney the Friday game was a close one and once the girls shook off their first game jitters they went on to best Osoyoos in the final game by a score of 34 -38.

Slaney said there was an awesome effort by the entire team at the Osoyoos tournament. Tournament MVPs were Kaitlyn Hancock, Jessica McLean and Kelsey Turner.

The team is usually coached by Lisa Baia and Slaney, but Baia was at another tourney in Grand Forks so Greenwood-Midway Elementary School Principal Darryl Turner offered to help out on the bench. “A big thanks to him for sharing his expertise,” said Slaney.

“With the talent they have – with their whole high school career ahead, if they can stay keen and dedicated – these girls show strong potential to be a force to be reckoned with,” predicted Slaney.

While the Grade 8 Girls were in Osoyoos the BCSS Jr. Girls team were at another tournament in Grand Forks with coaches Lisa and Pete Baia.

According to Lisa Baia, they finished in third place beating, JL Crow (Trail) and LVR (Nelson). “We lost only one game, to Fulton (Vernon),” she said in an email. “All of these schools are large “AA” schools, so Pete and I were very proud of our girls and how they represented our little school! Possibly another zone championship for Boundary Central?”

Slaney said all the BCSS teams are going to an all day Jamboree on Jan. 24. The Times will announce home game dates in its community calendar as they become scheduled.

One card. Many services. The new BC Services Card is part of government’s plan to modernize BC’s health care system. It replaces your CareCard, can be combined with your driver’s licence, and also acts as your photo ID. It’s more convenient and more secure, with enhanced features to protect your personal information. And getting yours is easy. Starting February 15, 2013, and for the next five years, you can simply enrol when renewing your driver’s licence. CareCard soon to be replaced Starting Feb. 15, 2013, and over the next five years, eligible British Columbians between the ages of 19 and 74 will be required to replace their CareCard with the new BC Services Card by renewing their enrolment in the Medical Services Plan.

The current CareCard was introduced in 1989 and has not been significantly updated over the last 20 years.

The new BC Services Card takes advantage of significant advances in technology since that time, to provide enhanced features.

According to the government the new card is more secure as it includes a photograph of the beneficiary, anti-forgery features, identity proofing and an expiry date. The card can also be combined with a driver’s licence and acts as photo ID – meaning one less card to carry.

To get a new BC Services Card, eligible British Columbians can simply enroll when renewing their driver’s licence. People who do not drive can still enroll at the nearest location where driver’s licences are issued.

Once a person enrolls, they will

be issued a new BC Services Card, or a combined card, and will need to re-enroll every five years. Children and certain groups of adults, such as the elderly or those in residential care or extended hospital care – for whom renewed enrolment would be impractical or present a hardship – will be exempted from re-enrolling or managed through special arrangements.

The BC Services Card also provides the foundation for supporting the potential future development of more convenient access for citizens to new online government services.

However, those tasked with protecting the privacy of British Columbians say the new cards are a form of surveillance and will centralize personal data in a way that makes it attractive to hackers.

“When you have that much information stored or linked together, it becomes much more valuable for criminals to attack,” said Vincent Gogolek, executive director of the B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association.

On page 8 of our Jan. 10, 2013 issue we printed pictures of the winners of the 2012 Christmas Light Up contest sponsored by the City of Greenwood.

Unfortunately we printed the wrong photo for the first place winner. What was printed was a picture of Ron Kucher’s entry.

Seen here is the actual winning display – done by Mike and Maureen Prystae on Marguerite Avenue.

They said they’d planned to do more too, but the arrival of a new grandchild called them away when they’d only worked on the display for a single day.

New year brings in new members, leaders to 4-H MARIJKA VAN KUIK Submitted

The new year is here, and so is a new year in 4-H! With new members, new leaders and a new project, we are ready to go. We are excited our club is growing; this year we have 22 members.

We have five new leaders: Jen MacDonald is stepping down from her position as clothing leader and handing it over to Juanita van Kuik; Pete and Shauna Blaine will be joining Greg MacDonald to head up the

4-H has been in British Columbia since 1914. Clubs were originally known as Boys and Girls clubs until they were renamed 4-H clubs in 1952 to more clearly represent the four H’s - head, heart, hands and health. While 4-H has changed and evolved a great deal since it’s start in almost a century ago, the impact of the program on our young people is as relevant today as it was back then. 4-H continues to teach young people to successfully meet the challenges not only of their own futures but also the future of their communities. From the six-year-old Cloverbud member to the 21-year-old 4-H Ambassador, the 4-H program continues to be a fantastic training ground for life.

You cannot run a government when the legislature sits just 44 days a year.

The referendum to abolish the HST was held August 2011, yet because the legislature has only sat 44 days, we are still paying this unfair tax. The B.C. Liberals put in this sneaky

tax after campaigning the last election that they would not put it in. We cannot trust them.

Now, after you and I and small business suffered significant losses due to the HST, Christy Clark will eliminate it just before the next election.

This is no way to run a government.

Boundary Central Secondary School Grads versus Dads Everyone get ready to come out for an evening of entertainment! On Friday, January 25, the annual “Grads versus Dads” hockey game will be taking place at the Midway arena, starting at 7:00.

This fundraiser has been around for many years, and is eagerly anticipated by the members of the graduating class and their families and friends. While the title may say “dads”, moms, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends have all suited up in the past.

A night filled with FUN is planned. Of course, the hockey game is the main attraction, with the grads challenging their families and friends to a fun-filled competition.

Experience does not matter in this game, as many participants have never played hockey before. This, of course, means lots of laughter and entertainment for the audience as the players try to play Canada’s greatest game, often with comical results.

A raffle table with wonderful prizes will be set up, as well as a bake table, 50/50 draws, and many other activities. Grads are also selling raffle tickets for incredible cash prizes.

All money raised goes to help decorate the arena for the graduation ceremony on June 8, and to fund the dry grad celebrations.

Admission is by donation at the door - and we have fantastic door prizes, too. We look forward to seeing many community members at the rink - come join us in a laughter-filled night and help the Grad Class of 2013.

Farewell...

I am sad to say that these are my last articles. I’ll soon be completed this course and as I reflect on the semester, I have come to a few realizations about the whole experience.

Each article was difficult, yet strangely fun, to write; from tracking people and information down, to writing the article up, to sending it in – there was always a sense of excitement and stress to meet the deadlines. I especially enjoyed writing the sports articles because I always loved to hear how the teams did from their proud coaches.

Interviewing students was fun as well.

The input from the students really made the articles come alive. I think this was a great way to be connected to the community and for the community to be connected to the school and I hope more students take Journalism 12 so this tradition may continue in the future.

I thank you for your support and hope you enjoy this issue.

Assessment Week Jitters At the end of each semester there is a period of time where the students write exams or are assessed in different ways for each of their classes. In previous years, the assessment had been a three day process, but there was some concern about how long the assessment was and if it was the best way to assess student learning. This year, it has been changed to a two day assessment and it will occur on January 22 and 23.

On these days, the students will be assessed on everything they have learned during the semester. This assessment is worth 20% of their entire grade. Not everyone participates in these assessment days.

Students in English 10, Science 10, Math 10 and Social Studies 11 must write a government exam worth 20% of their mark, while students in English 12 and Communications 12 must write government exams worth 40% of their entire mark. These exams are mandatory for all students who wish to receive a Dogwood diploma. Students in government-examinable courses will still be in classes on January 22 and 23, studying for their exams that occur the next week.

When asked about the decrease in assessment days, some older students said they were happy because they can get the examination done faster, instead of being drawn out over a week. A younger student said that it is a bit worrisome because it puts more pressure on students in a shorter amount of time. One teacher’s opinion was three days was too long, so the two days will be good.

Students are reminded that everyone must attend assessment days. Attendance is mandatory.

Say yes to the Chess Daniel Hoskin and Dillon Smith, two of Boundary Central’s grads and leadership students, are starting a chess club. Students of all grades are welcome to join the club, and hopefully have a great time.

Eventually there will be teams and tournaments to show each individual’s skills at this strategic massacre of a game. There will be blood, sweat, and guaranteed tears over the heated 1 on 1 battles. The two grads and founders of this great club will also be participants, and will be competing against chess rivals.

The game is easy to learn, fun to play, and hard to master. Look for more information to follow.

Tuition help increased for unemployed

For people living in the Boundary Region who are looking for work, we’ve got some good news.

The B.C. Government has announced an increase in the tuition cap for unemployed British Columbians accessing skills training through the Employment Program of BC. That means individuals receiving services through the Community Futures Boundary WorkBC Employment Services Centres located in Grand Forks and Greenwood may now be eligible for up to a maximum of $7,500 in tuition

Nearly 800 years ago Saint Francis of Assisi is said to have exhorted his followers to “preach the Gospel at all times, but only use words if necessary!”

The most powerful influences in our lives come from the people who “live” their faith. I wonder if the writer of James in the New Testament was frustrated because the church was not living its faith with integrity when he said, “Be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.”

Perhaps their lives like so many today simply did not match their theology. That’s not hard to imagine. (How many times have you had friends who have complained that the church is filled with hypocrites and can cite multiple examples?)

Maybe James was concerned that the church was growing in understanding, but not in service.

Why is it lectures on the end-times prophecy are always more popular than days of community service.

The church seems to be stuck. They loved to

listen and talk theology, but very few were growing in grace. (How many people have you known who have been in church for years, but have the same prejudices, the same unhealthy habits, and the same vices?)

I may not want to hear it, but James says that I only deceive myself when I hear, but don’t do.

Of course, we don’t deceive God. And we certainly don’t deceive the world. The world doesn’t care about our theology. They just want to know whether faith really makes a difference.

“Show me the money.” Is that what James is saying to us? Don’t tell me that God is love—show me. Don’t tell me that God is faithful—show me.

Don’t tell me that God is real—show me. Show me your faith in God by the way that you experience grief, that you parent your children, that you parent your parents, that you process stress, that you face difficulty, that you care for the poor, that you deal with anxiety. Show me faith that works.

We are grasped by God’s grace to become instruments of grace in the world. “Let them see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.”

What we do in our church services makes little difference if it doesn’t change how we live the rest of the week. I must confess that as I get older, I am much more impressed with what people do than with what they say. I love how Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, when he said, “What you are shouts so loudly in my ears I cannot hear what you say.”

Greenwood buys carbon offsets

In signing on to the Climate Action Charter municipalities have pledged to become carbon neutral by the end of 2012.

That means measuring the amount of carbon they produce and purchasing carbon offsets to balance their account.

According to the David Suzuki Foundation a carbon offset is a credit for greenhouse gas reductions achieved by one party that can be purchased and used to compensate (offset) the emissions of another party.

For example, wind energy companies often sell carbon offsets. The wind energy company benefits because the carbon offsets it sells make such projects more economically viable. The buyers of the offsets benefit because they can claim that their purchase resulted in new non-polluting energy, which they can use to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions.

CNK was asking city council to commit to purchasing offsets from Darkwoods by the following day, with another deadline of February 28 looming when the city is to complete their energy and carbon inventory and cut a cheque for the amount required to purchase offsets. tCouncillor Ashton was the first at the Greenwood table to ask the question. “A ton of what?” The same question had been raised at the Midway table the week before.

Amoung other things, CNK was tasked with locating a regional source for carbon offset credits and they have recommended they put the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Darkwoods Project on the west side of Kootenay Lake. The cost is to be no more

buying.

Councillor Lee Cudworth said he wanted nothing to do with it. “We grow trees here. Why are we involved in this period?” he asked.

But as Mayor Nipper Kettle said the city had no choice. “We have to give it to this one or to another that is out of the region.

We have no choice. Still have to purchase those credits.”

Greenwood Administrator Robin Dalziel estimates the city will have to pay around $2,500.

Ashton insisted it was hard to make a motion on some unknown figure and that she was not comfortable voting on an undetermined amount of money.

Cudworth agreed – noting wthe offer was for $25 per tonne, but it didn’t say how many tonne.

The human population seems to be holding its own according to the results of the West Boundary Christmas Bird Count. This year 26 people came out to join in the survey, which is one more than last year.

According to Wikipedia, “Up through the 19th century, many North Americans participated in the tradition of Christmas ‘side hunts’, in which they competed at how many birds they could kill, regardless of whether they had any use for the carcasses and of whether the birds were beneficial, beautiful, or rare. At the end of that century the U.S. ornithologist Frank Chapman, an officer in the recently formed National Audubon Society, proposed counting birds on Christmas instead of killing them.”

In 1900, 27 observers took part in the first count in 25 places in the United States and Canada.

According to the Audubon Society (Audubon.org) the Christmas Bird Count is the longest running ‘Citizen Science’ survey in the world, providing critical data on population trends.

This year 60 bird species were sighted – up from 55 last year. The number of individual birds that were counted fell however. In 2012 there were 2,649, down from 2,753. Though that is up considerably from the 1,871 counted in 2010.

The 2006 count, which involved 60 species and 3,893 individuals, is the highest count on record.

City buys carbon offsets Continued from page 14

Greenwood council voted to purchase Darkwoods carbon offsets and to direct the CAO to request more information of the financial impact of the audit for the carbon neutral program for the City of Greenwood.

A press release last week by the Community Energy Association lauded the Darkwoods joint procurement of Koote-

nay-based offsets being offered by CNK. The three regional districts and the municipalities of Fruitvale, Kaslo, Trail, Midway, Slocan, Rossland, and Invermere have also committed. More local governments are expected to sign on to this initiative in the coming weeks.

Local governments voluntarily signed BC’s Climate Action Charter and have committed to becoming carbon neutral in their operations by 2012.

Tree shoot popular The sport of archery in general is enjoying a resurgence There can be little doubt that the sport of archery is enjoying resurgence. It is emerging more and more in the popular culture through books, movies and television – The Hunger Games, Brave and The Arrow.

Last weekend the Kettle Wildlife Association Archery Club hosted a Christmas tree hunt on their indoor range.

Scattered throughout the 28-metre range were dozens of Christmas trees, boughs and hay bales.

There were five stations at the firing line, each posted with the name of the target you were to aim for.

Hidden throughout the range were 3D archery targets – everything from turkey and mountain goat to elk and even a dragon.

The club has an open shoot every Friday at 6 p.m. and there are three outdoor 3D shoots planned for this season – on April 6-7, May 18-20 and June 1-2.

The April shoot is open to any type of bow but the mid-May three-day event will see the Traditional Bowhunters of B.C. return to the KWA clubhouse again. So that weekend will be limited

to primitive bow, longbow and recurve equipment only.

Wilf Lindquist is going to be taking over the job as archery chair for the club; Don Johnston did that job up until now.

Don and Carol Johnston will continue to offer archery training for the club.

Once-a-week courses will begin again soon and Don and Carol are hoping to get other club members to become instructors as well.

Last weekend’s Christmas Tree Shoot attracted Steve and Penny Pendergraft and their son from Osoyoos. They’ve been training under Brock Paton at Desert Park.

Paton is a world-class competitor who started Osoyoos Traditional Archery School in May of last year. Paton is also a director of the British Columbia Archery Association.

These conditions may have severe impacts on many aspects of our lives, in particular agriculture, fisheries, forestry and infrastructure protection.

We can also plant trees and increase organic matter in our soils, which will also help our agriculture and landscaping adapt to droughts and high temperatures.

In the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan, we will consider climate change impacts in relation to potential future water demand from different sectors, and evaluate adaptation strategies such as water storage, water conservation, soil management, irrigation efficiency, and landscape planning. I will focus on many of these topics in future columns.
