Additional funds will cover influx at schools

A sudden increase of students from the Bountiful school in September left School District. No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) with $625,000 in additional costs, much of which has now been covered by the province.

“Until Dec. 21, we were not sure whether we would be receiving additional funding to accommodate an unexpected influx of students into our Homelinks program,” said Supt. Jeff Jones said. “In fact, our amended 2012-2013 budget will reflect an additional $500,000. We received notice in writing on Jan. 7.”

When Bountiful school closed, rumoured to be on the order of jailed fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leader Warren Jeffs, 161 students flooded into the Kootenay Lake system. Homelinks and DESK (Distance Education School of the Kootenays) attracted 141 new students. Both programs combine home and classroom schooling under supervision of school district teachers.

Additionally, 12 students registered at Canyon-Lister Elementary School (CLES) and another eight enrolled at Yahk Elementary School — “pretty much doubling the population,” Jones said.

More than 100 students were registered as independent home schoolers, as well. They don’t fall under the school district’s responsibility.

Price jump reveals fraud on Wear Withall natural gas bill

Beth Kastelan did a double take when she opened the natural gas bill for Wear Withall, her Canyon Street clothing shop, this month.

The price for heating the small building had jumped considerably, she said on Friday. Then she noticed a change on her Fortis BC bill. Under “commodity charges” her supplier was listed as Active Renewable Marketing Ltd. and the price per gigajoule was about $10. Fortis BC was charging its own customers $2.977 per gigajoule for the same period.

“I had a five-year contract with a different supplier,” Kastelan said.

“It ended last May and I told them I wasn’t renewing it.”

When she contacted Active Renewable Marketing Ltd. she was told she had signed a contract to purchase natural gas from the company. But when she received a copy of that contract, she said it was clearly not her signature.

In print beside the signature was the name Beth and the business name, Wear Withall.

After a visit to the Creston RCMP, Kastelan came away with a letter attesting that the signature on the contract did not match that of her BC driver’s licence.

Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday that Cranbrook RCMP have been investigating at least two dozen complaints against Active, all

of which involve alleged forgery of signatures.

Similar complaints have been reported in other BC communities.

On March 8, 2012, the BC Utilities Commission ordered an investigation on Active Energy, which also operates Active Renewable Marketing Ltd. “Effective immediately, Consumer Protection BC is to perform a compliance inquiry into the allegations of forgery and unauthorized signatures and the steps taken

by Active in dealing with these accusations, and provide a report to the commission concerning its investigation and findings,” said a statement from the BC Utilities Commission.

“The commission will then determine if any further process is warranted.”

Gollan said an Active spokesperson told police the sales representative involved in Kastelan’s contract was working out of Ontario and has since been dismissed by the company.

He encourages all natural gas consumers to check their Fortis BC bill to ensure that the supplier of their gas is one they have signed a contract with.

The BC Utilities Commission instructs consumers who have problems with suppliers that they should first contact the company involved. If no resolution can be found, consumers should then contact the utilities commission.

Creston Curling Centre looking for youth to play the game

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor The next generation of Creston Valley curlers is now in the middle of another season of the Creston Curling Centre’s youth program. And with just a couple of months of practice under their belts, the dozen or so high school students are doing rather well.

“They’re going to be very good curlers,” said coach Doug Hannah.

“It’s very rewarding when they’re able to walk out on the ice and fall — they’re not able to do much at all — and after a few sessions they’re out there sliding and sweeping.”

“You see so much change from week to week,” added assistant coach Laddie Pavlis.

But while a couple have curled before, most are new to the sport, so they’re not quite ready to compete just yet.

“We want them to learn to throw a rock, and learn about the game,” said Hannah.

“It’s all been mechanics,” said Pavlis. “We haven’t even talked strategy.”

In learning those basics, the students have been having a lot of fun, and some, including 13-year-old Megan Emary, came with a group of friends.

“We just decided to try curling,” said Emary. “Everyone else knew how to do it.”

She already played volleyball and has trained in archery and gymnastics. The closest thing to curling she’s done was figure skating — simply because they’re both on ice — but curling presented the challenge of multiple techniques.

“It’s like there’s almost a right way,” she said.

“There are different ways to do everything, for sure,” agreed Tyler Powell.

The 15-year-old learned to curl last season, and competed with the youth team. And although he likes golfing and dirt biking in the summer, curling quickly became a favourite winter pastime.

“It’s a good way to get exercise and it’s a fun sport,” he said. “You get to interact with different people. It’s pretty much a sport anybody can do.”

The curling centre’s plan is to make sure that younger kids learn about the sport, and is trying to get a Rocks and Rings program going in local schools, which begins with teaching students in kindergarten to Grade 7, moving them on to junior curling from grades 7-12, and then blending the players into adult teams.

Hannah, who moved to Creston a year ago, appreciates the chance to pass on the skills he’s used since learning to curl as a teenager in Whitehorse.

The time he’s given to the young curlers has taught them about many aspects of the sport, from balance — “When you slide, your knee isn’t always on the ground,” Emary said — to concentration.

“If you skip, you have to have a lot of faith in yourself,” said Powell.

“You’re leading a whole team.”

“It’s probably one of the best sports for teaching kids to be part of a team,” said Pavlis. “They all have specific roles to play, and they all have to learn to work together.”

And it teaches them etiquette, in a sport where honesty is the key to success.

“It’s an honest sport,” said Hannah.

“You’re really taught honesty.”

In a week featuring neighbours’ feuds, icy road conditions and requests for well being checks, Creston RCMP responded to 60 calls from Jan. 7-13, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

January 7 •An ongoing dispute between neighbours on 10th Avenue South resulted in a complaint about a diesel pickup. One resident reported his neighbor drove the pickup noisily back and forth on his block so he went out on the street to photograph the activity. The truck then drove at him and bumped into his leg, which led to a heated argument and a visit from police.

•A well-being check on an Erickson Road resident proved he was fine.

•A complaint was made about an elderly male scooter driver on Canyon Street who was wearing no safety clothing and not using lights in the dark of the early morning.

•Slushy road conditions on Highway 3 were attributed to a vehicle going out of control and sliding to the left, colliding with a trailer pulled by a pickup truck. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed.

•An Elm Street male was reported to be in breach of probation and later failed to make a court appearance, leading to a warrant being issued for his arrest.

•A 911 call through the Whimster Road cellphone tower could not be traced.

•Police served a Kitchener Road resident with a probation order on behalf of Trail RCMP.

January 8 •A rear-end collision occurred on Canyon Street in icy, foggy conditions.

•A vehicle left on the roadside on Evans Road for three days was towed.

•A number of items that might have been stolen were found in the bushes near Alder Street. Included are a hockey helmet, skates and tools. They can be claimed by their owner at the police station.

•A new resident to the Creston Valley served police with a self-created declaration that he is a “freeman of the land” and does not adhere to government regulations.

•Minor damage resulted when a vehicle went into the ditch on Highway 21.

•No damage was reported in a minor collision in a Canyon Street parking lot.

•No injuries resulted in a single vehicle accident on Highway 3 near Kitchener.

•A blue 2001 GMC Sierra pickup, licence plate 8468 GH, was stolen from Corn Creek Road.

January 9 •A well-being check on an Aldrich Road resident indicated he was OK. •A 911 call from a West Creston Road resident was blamed on pocket dialing.

•Report of an alleged fraud in a property sale on Twin Bays was deemed to be civil, not criminal.

•A well-being check at a 10th Avenue address showed the resident was fine.

•Police attended a Rocky Point Road resident to assist Trail RCMP in an assault investigation.

•Police are investigating a 49-year-old male driver for possible impaired driving after his vehicle went off Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road and rolled down a steep slope.

•A 911 call through the Riley Road cellphone tower could not be traced.

January 10 •When RCMP members entered a Cook Street residence after a report of a possible break and entry they found the home strewn with dog feces and containing four unsecured firearms. The owner was contacted later and warned about storage rules for the guns, which were then returned to him.

•A portable heater was stolen in a break-in to an Erickson Street residence.

•A white four-door AMC Concord bearing Saskatchewan plates was reported to be driving erratically on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road.

January 11 •In an ongoing dispute on Erickson Road, a broken wine bottle in a driveway was blamed on a neighbor. Police said there was no evidence.

•Photographs were stolen in break-ins to several Lower Kootenay Band buildings.

•A woman who bought a cellphone and paid for a three-year plan for her niece cancelled the plan and asked police to retrieve the phone from the younger woman. Police declined.

•Icy roads were blamed for an unusual incident on Highway 3A. One car skidded and went into the ditch, causing a following vehicle to skid and go into the ditch, causing a third vehicle to skid and go into the ditch. No collision occurred between vehicles but all were damaged. No injuries were reported.

•A vehicle went off an icy Lower Wynndel Road, sustaining extensive damage.

January 12 •An Erickson Road resident accused his neighbor of throwing industrial paint remover onto his truck. Police are investigating.

January 13 •A horse was found on Mallory Road.

•Another call about the Erickson Road neighbours’ dispute was received, this one for no apparent reason.

•A Murdoch Street resident was warned after a complaint about uttering threats.

•A semi collided with a moose on Highway 3 near Goatfell. The moose had to be destroyed.

Joanne Beddoes, who had been a vice-principal at ARES, started the school year as Homelinks vice-principal, too, but was moved to the Creston Education Centre (which houses Homelinks) full-time.

“The principal at ARES (Rod Giles) asked to fill the vacancy by sharing the responsibilities amongst his staff, and reducing his own teaching time,” Jones said.

Meanwhile, the Creston Valley’s other two elementary schools are temporarily without their principals.

CLES principal David Falconer is off on a personal leave. Prince Charles Secondary School vice-principal Rob Simpson has stepped in as acting principal in Falconer’s absence.

Nancy Devuono, principal at Erickson Elementary School, has been temporarily reassigned and is working on district assignments. Dan Miles, principal at Kaslo’s J.V. Humphries School, is the acting principal at Erickson.

“We are looking forward to Nancy’s return to the school,” Jones said.

Former mayor, councillor not duped by mail, email scams

Two Creston residents, both former elected officials, report they have received scam invitations this month.

Former mayor Joe Snopek got a letter in the mail recently from a man who claims to be a lawyer in Spain, whose deceased client shares Snopek’s surname.

“I m (sic) seeking for your consent/ assistant (sic) so as to present you as the lawful heir to my deceased client assets who pass-away (sic) without a WILL, since share shares (sic) his surname,” the letter signed by Juan Maria Mendizebal says.

In the letter, Snopek is told he can share half 10.6 million euros by working with the lawyer to create the necessary “judicial or notary documents declaring you a legitimate heir” in the absence of a will.

“However, if this business proposition offends your moral ethics, do accept my sincere apology,” the letter says, before inviting Snopek to initiate further contact by email.

“God bless us Adios,” it concludes.

Former town councillor Ed Vondracek seems to be popular with con artists in Africa.

On Jan. 5, he received an email, supposedly from Nigeria, that a FedEx office in that country is holding a package for him from a colleague who has “explained that he is

from the United States but he is in Nigeria for a three (3) month Surveying Project.”

In the package, Vondracek (known in the email as “unknown recipients”) is told, there is a bank draft worth $800,000 US. By providing FedEx Delivery Post with personal information by email, and sending a payment of $375 US, his package will be shipped.

“Note: that we were not instructed to email you, but due to the high priority of your package we had to inform you as your sender did not leave us with his phone number because he stated that he just arrived in Nigeria and he has not gotten a phone yet,” the email continues.

The letter is signed off with: “Mr John Horton FedEx Online Team Management.

All rights reserved. © 1995-2013” It is not clear if the copyright symbol is intended to indicate that rights to the scam are protected by law.

Four days later, Vondracek got another email, this one purportedly from Miss Silbele Aldepha, from Cocody Abidjan, Cote d’Ivory in West Africa.

The 21-year-old woman asks “undisclosed recipient” for his help in investing the undisclosed sum she has “honorably inherited” from her late father.

“I will give you all information’s (sic) needed as soon as I hear from you

to further this transation (sic) in the BANK where the money was deposited,” she concludes.

Snopek and Vondracek did not pursue these opportunities.

‘Starting with Seeds’ launching COTR food workshop series Around the world, communities are coming together to grow, share and learn about food.

Neighbours are finding that talking about how we grow, buy, store and prepare food is a rich and rewarding way of building common ground — after all, our need to be nourished connects us all.

Learning about our food system helps us to feed our families in ways that are good for ourselves, good for our communities, and good for the planet.

This year, the College of the Rockies will be offering a workshop series, Food in the Valley.

The hope is that the workshops will be a place where participants can gather to learn about our food system from a dynamic Creston Valley perspective.

Once a season, a workshop will look at a food issue through a “think global, act local” lens. Each session will focus on a specific topic, which those attending will learn to understand from a global perspective and to act on in our community. The goal of all workshops will be to explore knowledge, tools and local resources that will allow the promotion of personal well-being and the well-being of the Creston Valley.

At the heart of any truly sustainable food system is a secure source of high quality, locally grown seeds. So, on Jan. 26 (9 a.m.-noon), COTR will be launching the Food in the Valley series with a “Starting with Seeds” workshop.

The workshop will answer questions like why it is that many farmers, gardeners and food activists feel that seeds are under threat, and what it means that the vast majority of local vegetables are not grown from local seed.

Participants will also gain practical seed saving skills. Nationally renowned seed grower, educator and advocate Patrick Steiner of Kootenay Joe Farm and Stellar Seeds in Johnson’s Landing, will give guidance about growing, conserving and spreading locally adapted, biodiverse seed. He will speak from his experience as a family farmer and commercial grower of certified organic, rare and heirloom varieties of herb, flower, and vegetable seed.

Anyone with an interest in sustainability, food security, gardening,

seed saving or even community building should think about taking part in “Starting with Seeds”. The workshop will be an opportunity to meet others who share your interests. It will also be a chance to learn about how you can make a difference here in Creston by volunteering with the Dan McMurray Community Seed Bank and this March’s Seedy Saturday seed exchange.

“Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It’s not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make.

Period.”

This message popped up last week on my Facebook page, posted by a friend from the Lower Mainland.

It’s one of those pithy phrases that fits nicely on T-shirts and, if one doesn’t give too much thought, passes for cleverness, if not wisdom.

On the surface, the sentiment sounds reasonable enough. But my thoughts went immediately to how easy it is to swallow this nonsense, or to pass it on as a well-meaning truism.

It might be true, in the most literal sense, that everything we do is indeed based on the choices we make. But the more important issue is left unspoken — do we all have the same abilities with which to make those choices? Of course not, no more than we are all “created equal” as Thomas Jefferson opined in the U.S. Declaration of Independence (“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”). In the context of the latter, I suspect that what the writer intended to convey was that everyone should be treated equally, because it is most certainly not true that all are created equal, any more than all are capable of making good choices.

among them. Those factors alone would seem to make it obvious that we are not born equal and that our abilities to make choices can be compromised. It doesn’t seem like much

So our resolution is to be strong on the issues and respectful of the people. No personal attacks, no character assassination, no sinister music. Just ideas, accountability and debate.

That’s not to say those ads won’t exist in the election. The Liberals have already started them, attacking John Cummins, using doubleentendres with Adrian’s last name and going back to a decade when one third of voters (including me) were still in grade school.

Meanwhile, they use $15 million of your tax dollars on self-promoting ads.

Nevertheless, we’re not going there. Voter suppression isn’t good, especially when it turns off a whole generation of voters craving to hear about issues and understand the political process. Debate is imperative for you to make a choice when casting your ballot, and for you to hear it, politicians need to start taking out the noise.

Here’s to a great 2013 for all, and achieving our new year’s resolutions.

Canada Post ‘obsessed with power’ To the Editor: Sending out Christmas cards has been my tradition from as far back as I can remember. We are the product of all our encounters and I like to make contact with people from yesteryear who have contributed to my life.

Envelopes may get a bit heavy, as I add a letter, newspaper article and picture, or my wife may add a recipe. In many cases, we have not contacted these people since last year and may not make contact again until next Christmas.

I mailed out over 200 from the Sandpoint, Idaho, post office. All went through, headed all over the U.S.A., as my life’s journey had covered a lot of ground.

I was in Creston for the Grey Cup party at the legion and mailed about 30 to people with Canadian addresses.

Eight came back to Sandpoint marked over the weight limit for the stamp. I was amazed that Canada Post would prefer to mail a letter back over the border than to deliver it in Creston over a few grams!

I have written a number of letters suggesting that Canadian government workers tend to be obsessed with their power and this is a good example. I would think they would show a little common sense, especially at this time

Well, I learned my lesson. In the future, my Canadian contacts will need to be satisfied with an email or a phone call — or, of course the American postal service will deliver to Canada!

Canadians must stand up to Harper To the Editor: At Christmas 60 years ago, I arrived in Canada. I am forever thankful to Canada that I was allowed to make Canada my home and this I could live in one of the best countries in the world.

The best part of my life is the 32 years I’ve spent here in the beautiful Creston Valley. Today, when the rest of the world is in turmoil, financial disasters and wars over resources and religions, this valley is blessed by the Creator and seems to be an island of sanity, and I hope my fellow inhabitants and their offspring will keep it that way.

I am still and optimist and more than ever I believe that world peace is possible if we’re willing to work for it.

Great humanists have set the example and shown us the way, like Jesus, Buddha, Michail Gorbatschow, Ghandi, Lao Tse, Albert Schweitzer, Nelson

Mandela and many more.

But what is happening to this wonderful country that had earned he respect of the world? What are Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his trained seals making out of our beloved Canada? For the sake of our economy, our resources are sold to other countries.

Bill C-45 follows Bill C-38 and makes sweeping changes to landmark environmental laws, like the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the fisheries act and more tragedies.

The federal government’s position is clear: Building pipeline projects like the Northern Gateway, making way for West Coast tanker traffic, is more important than a healthy ecology and native land.

Thirty-two thousand of our beautiful lakes are no longer protected. The industries involved are given much more than they ask for, all at the expense of our rich natural capital. The resource extraction industry has a free pass to degrade Canada’s rich natural legacy.

Will we Canadians sleepwalk into 2013 or will we finally wake up and tell Harper enough is enough? We need nothing less than a revolution to get rid of this destructive government. For the sake of our children and grandchildren’s future, we need to unite and protect our natural legacy and their future, stand up and stop this madness.

Our sacred, great and once-democratic country cannot be allowed to be destroyed by the ideology of one misguided ruler and his cohorts. Brave Canadians have worked hard, and also fought and died to make Canada free, great and respected in the world.

Stats show library is well used

I’m a bit late for the year in review type of story, but here are a few statistics I thought you might find interesting: •In a typical month, about 6,500 people come into the library.

•From September to December, 1,035 people attended children and youth programs at the library.

•Approximately 10,000 items are signed out or renewed each month.

•An average of 62 groups use our meeting room each month.

•Our public computers have over 1,000 bookings a month.

•Our Facebook page is up to 276 likes and counting.

•In 2012, 4,039 unique patrons signed out items from the library.

Stats tell just a part of the story. A couple of weeks ago, I received this by email: “Firstly, thank you for being our most wonderful and amazing library. Tonight, there were three family members reading books (brought home today) in the living room, one watching a DVD on the computer (brought home today) in the nook, and me knitting whilst listening to an audiobook (downloaded today) on the sofa. You are a big part of our lives. We are so grateful!”

The public library is one of the few places in society that guarantees the same level of service to everyone, old and young, rich and poor. We support local communities and an informed, democratic society. Membership is free, and we greet you with a smile. Come down and see what’s new!

I had been saving a special announcement for our Family Literacy Day celebrations on Jan. 26, but, as anyone who knows me knows, I can’t keep a secret for long, so here it is.

We will no longer charge overdue fines on children’s cards (age 12 and

under), and fines on youth cards are halved, effective immediately.

We recognize that overdue fines can represent a significant barrier to using the library for many in the community,

Advertising must target Drop dead healthy tech-savvy demographic

place that mostly everyone has a smartphone of some sort and it is constantly being referred to for time or date but more importantly to whomever they are chatting to at the time. To be honest, we have more luck having a conversation with our kids in the adjacent province via text rather than trying to pin them down to a time that works for everyone via a telephone call.

We are also reworking our advertising and communication methods at work to better access this demographic as well as connecting with staff. Is it more efficient? Considering two weeks before Christmas, no one was coming to visit, but we ended up inundated with bodies eating our chips and consuming our beverages, I would say the planning aspect of smartphones is a bit weak but ultimately it could be the users and it’s always great to see them.

When you work at a place long enough, you get to know it intimately — all the creaks and groans and weird noises that you either need to react to or can dismiss because it constitutes nor-

mal. For instance, I can tell if the pool air system is functioning normally by the amount of air flowing under the door across my toes into the change room, as well as the air movement sound it is making. Another example is how most staff can pick out a thump, bang or other noises from upstairs while having lunch and know whether it is a program, user group or bears investigation.

An interesting item we have noticed recently is it appears on occasion when someone is cooking in the kitchen upstairs, the smell can sometimes wend its way into the fitness track very slightly.

This is not a bad thing — kind of like the whispering gallery in St. Paul’s cathedral, only with smell — but if you happen to be like us on the treadmills the other day and had to faintly smell slow cooked pork roast while watching the Food Network on the TV, that’s just cruel.

Heading into January, during our early morning swim, we are starting to see some new faces doing laps in the pool but we also have the consistent ones that have made this place part of their lifestyle. I know one regular who has been doing laps at this and the outdoor pool previously for the 18 years I have been here (and I assume years before that, as well).

Another person mentioned they had been swimming laps for 29 years starting before they moved to the valley and continuing from there.

On the list of things to do: Develop a contest or the like where people can track their “lappage”.

We had put on a program years ago where you could swim to Yahk and back, but with the advent of a year round facility, I think we need to start swimming out of the valley. You might be able to even get an app for that on your smartphone.

Wildsight starting new series WILDSIGHT

The spring 2013 Wildsight series begins on Jan. 22. Local photographers Ralph Moore, Bernd Stengl, Christine Munkerud and Mike Keeling will provide another evening of beautiful eye-catching images from last summer and from places as far away as Norway and the Middle East.

On Feb. 12, Wildsight will host a timely award-winning documentary film on the Peace River Site C dam proposal called Peace Out (Vancouver

International Film Festival 2011 most popular Canadian documentary). This visually dynamic film with a pleasing score asks the difficult questions regarding our society’s approach to energy. Brian Churchill, Peace Country resident and biologist, will accompany the film.

On March 12, Wildsight addresses climate change with the film Chasing Ice, produced by acclaimed National Geographic photographer James Balog. In his “extreme ice survey” Balog captures a

multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers with time-lapse cameras across the Arctic. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and record ancient mountains of ice disappearing at a breathtaking rate. All presentations are from 7-9 p.m. at Rotacrest Hall.

Intouchables and Blackbird Musicians joining showing at Prince Charles Erickson for concert SUBMITTED

France’s box office smash hit, The Intouchables, comes to Creston on Monday, when it will be shown as part of the Friends of the Cinema series.

This crowd pleaser tells the story of a fabulously wealthy quadriplegic man who hires a young Senegalese man from the projects to be his caregiver.

Common sights on the sidewalks of Europe, street hustlers selling things like knockoff handbags are often the objects of fear and derision.

“These street guys have no pity,” a friend tells Philippe.

“That’s exactly what I want… No pity,” he replies.

The second biggest box office hit in France, the unlikely pairing of Philippe and Driss is proving to be a popular movie with North American audiences, too.

The Intouchables runs at the Prince Charles Theatre on Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Prince Charles Theatre will also be home to a fundraising movie on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.

Blackbird, a hit at the Toronto Film Festival, is being shown to help raise funds for

Described by one reviewer as a disturbing and perceptive look at the culture of fear that has arisen in the wake of the Columbine and other horrific showings, Blackbird is a fascinating insight into bullying.

Funds from the movie go toward an upcoming produc-

tion of Anne Frank and Me, which will be shown at the high school in the third week of February.

Members of the public are welcome to attend. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at Black Bear Books, Creative Fix, from drama students or at the door.

Creston’s Carl Erickson will be joined by Mike Mitchell and Ted Bryant of the Kings of Kitchener and bass player Gary Snow for a concert at the Snoring Sasquatch on Jan. 19.

Erickson started in music at age 10 playing the violin, and later the clarinet when his father passed on his when he couldn’t figure it out.

“My brother took me to see Ray Charles about age 12 and I have never been the same since,” said Erickson.

He and his sister, Karen, had a rock band in high school called the Royals, and before Erickson knew it, he was playing saxophone in a band called the Nocturnals along with his friend, Ron Henschel. The Nocturnals recorded over 20 singles and are featured on the Live at the Grooveyard album, which has become a collectors item. That album musically showcases all the R&B groups of that Vancouver era who were booked by Jaguar Enterprises.

Erickson has good memories of touring with groups like the Buck Owens revue, which he left in Phoenix, Ariz., around 1976, to Spade Nielson and Gamblers tour-

ing across Canada and the U.S.A. all the way to southeast Asia, and countless groups like the Elvis, Elvis, Elvis (three Elvis impersonators representing the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s ) followed.

After that, Erickson spent about eight years in Calgary, part of which was spent playing saxophone with Ronnie King, who had taken a leave of absence from the Stampeder band of Sweet City Woman fame. He then returned to Vancouver and reunited with his friend, Muddy Fraser, a blues legend, and they recorded two albums, one in late 1980 and one about 1990.

More recently, he spent a year in Jamaica starting in 2010 where he played and recorded with some really great Jamaican musicians.

“These days I happily reside here in Creston and have many wonderful friends musical and otherwise,” he said, and has often played Warren and Kalen Huscroft with their group, the Hollyhocks, which is currently taking a break from the world of music.

The doors to Erickson’s show open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7. Tickets are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $13 at the door.

Loren had many occupations and enjoyed living in many parts of BC. His fondest memories were his growing-up years in West Creston. He loved to garden and always had a beautiful one.

GRANDPARENTS SCAM Though the “Emergency Scam” (or sometimes referred to as the “Grandparent Scam”) has been around for years, the RCMP-led Canadian AntiFraud Centre (PhoneBusters) warns the public to be on after noting a marked increase in the number of complaints.

Traditionally operating as a telemarketing scam throughout North America, fraudsters contact potential victims while posing as a family member or friend in urgent need of cash. Often the scenario involves an accident or arrest while travelling abroad, with a request that cash be sent through a money transfer company, such as Western Union or Money Gram.

In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from con artist claiming to be one of his or hers grandchildren. The caller goes on to say that they are in some kind of trouble, usually a car accident, returning from a foreign country, or even bail money and need money immediately.

Victims don't verify the story until after the money has been sent as the caller specifically asks that they do not want other relatives to know what has happened by asking “Can you please help me? I'm in jail (or in the hospital / or in some type of financial need). But don't tell Dad. He would kill me if he found out, please sent the money ASAP. I'm scared".

Wanting to help their grandchild, the victim sends money by a money transfer company such as Money Gram or Western Union.

Variations on the scam exist such as an old neighbor, a friend of the family etc. but predominantly the emergency scam is directed toward the grandparents.

Cats lose two to Rebels

The Thunder Cats have dropped into last place in their division following two weekend losses to the Castlegar Rebels.

With 32 points, the Thunder Cats are at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, two points behind the fourth-place Columbia Valley Rockies.

“We had few good chances to score,” said head coach Josh Hepdtich of Friday’s

game in Castlegar, which the Rebels won 3-0. “It was a very tough game. They play a very hard-working, strong, strong game.

They’re a team that competes every shift.”

The Rebels scored once on a power play in the first period, and twice in the second. Despite six power plays of their own, the Thunder Cats couldn’t manage a single goal against the Rebels.

“They’re a team that’s fighting for first place in their division,” Hepditch said of the Rebels, who, with 59 points, are tied with the Neslon Leafs in the Neil Murdoch

Division. “We actually played a pretty decent game. They capitalized on a couple mistakes we made.”

Saturday’s game in Creston also resulted in a 3-0 loss.

“They brought the exact same game plan,” said Hepditch.

The Rebels scored once in the first period and twice in the third that night.

“We had a goal called back in the first period,” said Hepditch. “We definitely could have turned the momentum around in the first period. … We just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

The last few games have been difficult with key players missing; Ethan Rusnack is still out following a concussion and

Chiefs win two weekend games

CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION The Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s Chiefs peewee team won their two league games on the weekend pretty decisively, and continue their domination of the East Kootenay league peewee division.

On Saturday in Invermere, the Chiefs came out ready and fast, and led 5-0 after the first, and great passing and communication by the team led to a final 9-0 score. One of their best complete games, everyone was on the same page and ready to play.

On Sunday in Whitefish, Mont., the Creston boys jumped out to another 5-0 lead and never looked back. They did a lot of good passing and had some nice goals scored but need to work on hitting the net more with their shots. The final score was 11-2 for the Chiefs.

Brayden Jellis was top scorer with the hat trick and an assist, with Gudjonson scoring another hat trick.

The Chiefs final regular season league game runs at home with Whitefish visiting on Saturday.

Jesse Collins is recovering from an upper body injury.

New acquisitions Connor Kid and Luke Jones, formerly of the Grand Forks Border Bruins, may be just what the Thunder Cats need heading into a weekend that will see the Thunder Cats host the Golden Rockets and Penticton Lakers.

With the playoffs drawing closer, every game is important — but with a string of close games against Golden and a recent win over Penticton, Hepditch is confident.

“Nothing is out of hand yet for sure,” he said. “We’ve got to find a way to string a few wins together. … It’s a playoff game every game for us now.”

The Prince Charles Secondary School junior boys basketball team played in Trail over the weekend. The team, coached by Rick Czar, finished second in its first tournament of the season. The boys lost to J.L. Crowe (Trail), defeated Rossland and Castlegar and then played L.V. Rogers (Nelson) in the final, losing 45-41.

The bantam boys basketball team played in Invermere for its first tournament. The boys, coached by Larry Hills, lost to Jaffray and Selkirk (Kimberley) and defeated David Thompson (Invermere).

The season’s first home basketball action is Jan. 25 and 26 with a senior boys and girls tournament.

The path to a strong community runs right through the computers at local libraries and literacy programs.

It’s at those workstations where libraries and literacy programs help bridge the digital divide with sessions in computer basics, email and social media — perhaps to seniors or newcomers to Canada — which open up a world of possibilities for exploring information, and connecting with faraway friends and loved ones.

And that’s the kind of loose, often unrecognized learning — called informal and non-formal learning — that public libraries and literacy organizations in the province are highlighting as part of the week leading up to ABC Life Literacy Canada’s Family Literacy Day, Jan. 27, which will be celebrated at the Creston and District Public Library on Jan. 26.

“This is at the heart of what literacy

programs and public libraries do – and that’s support community-building,” says Brenda Le Clair, chief executive of Decoda Literacy Solutions, which leads a literacy network that reaches over 400 communities in B.C. It might be often taken for granted, but informal and non-formal learning — from parents reading to their children, to friends offering tips on downloading ebooks at the library — is a vital contributor to ongoing community health and prosperity, says Le Clair.

Simply consider the thousands of workshops, discussion groups, readings, training and tutoring sessions that happen each day in public libraries and literacy programs around the province.

“This is learning on a truly impressive scale – and it’s available for free,” says Sandra Singh, chief executive and chief librarian at Vancouver Public Library, who notes a body of research on the importance of informal and non-formal learn-

ing. “It makes an amazing difference to our communities and their quality of life.”

At the Creston and District Public Library, for instance, local programs include Ask Andrew (a Saturday morning drop-in computer help program), Readers Are Leaders (a volunteer run reading program for elementary school children), YXPress (an arts and social program for teens), Facebook and ebook workshops, an annual tax help program, the National Film Board Film Club and more.

“We really want to recognize the value — and the power — of this kind of learning,” says chief librarian Aaron Francis.

“It takes place all the time, and in so many different ways. It contributes to the economy, and it’s so important to building and supporting strong communities.”

Informal learning and literacy are closely connected: reading, singing, playing games and talking with a child help build language skills well before the youngster starts in school, for instance.

Research shows that reading to children more than once a day has a positive impact on their future academic skills, says ABC Life Literacy Canada, citing Statistics Canada data.

“This year, we want to celebrate Family Literacy Day with some informal learning,” says Linda Steward, community literacy co-ordinator for the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy. “Cooking your favourite recipe with your friend or child is a perfect activity. Or explore a new recipe with a cookbook from the library: the informal learning starts the moment you start to uncover the range of cuisines to explore.”

Celebrate Family Literacy Day at the Creston library on Jan. 26 from 10:30 a.m.3 p.m., with snacks and entertainment for all ages. Chief Jason Louie from the Lower Kootenay Band will share Ktunaxa stories, Elena Yeung and Peter Bodley will provide musical entertainment, and librarian Aaron Francis and guests will present a special story time.
