HAND CRAFTED ARTISAN SALTS FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND

DANISH DOUGH WHISK … a very cool baking tool

Salt of the Island

SALT OF THE ISLAND - all natural, unrefined and harvested from the cold Pacific waters of Vancouver Island. Canadian Sea Salt, Smoked Canadian Rock Salts and Infused Canadian Sea Salts are now available from the Vancouver Island Salt Company. Vancouver Island Salt Company, located in Cobble Hill (Cowichan Valley), offers high-quality, handcrafted artisan salts. Andrew Shepherd established the company in January 2010, after more than a decade working as a chef. Dedicated to the world of gourmet foods, Shepherd was excited to add something unique to BC's thriving food scene by offering a range of salts that are all natural, local and sustainable. Shepherd dons hip-waders and harvests his bounty in the tidal waters off Cherry Point. After that he returns to the office to begin the evaporation process. “We boil the seawater – it takes a lot of water and a lot of boiling to get a little salt,” notes Shepherd. “Then we smoke, infuse and generally tease every flavour out of the salt. The results are innovative infusions like Banana Pepper, Mustard, Blue Cheese, Bacon, Spanish Paprika, Jerk and Blackberry Wine (to name a few)”. Smooth and aromatic, the infused salts set off a mouthwatering sensation and add a deliciously distinct flavour to everything from appies and main course dishes to desserts. From the Canadian wild to your kitchen pantry, there’s no doubt that a bag of Vancouver Island Salt Co.’s salts will transform your spice drawer.

Mixing doughs can be quite a task. The solution? The Danish Dough Whisk. This indispensable mixing tool is designed to succeed where other whisks and spoons fail. With only 5% of the surface area of a standard mixing spoon, the dough hook mixes faster, requires less force, combines ingredients more evenly, and doesn't overwork the dough in the process. The dough whisk’s innovative and unique flowthrough design works on any consistency of dough, from pancake batter and scone dough to choux pastry. The wide-open loops allow you to mix yeast doughs, cookie doughs, stiff doughs, light doughs and gluten-free doughs without getting clogged up, making the whisk simple to clean. The long wooden handle provides a great ergonomic grip for added leverage when mixing. The wire loops thoroughly combine all ingredients before the kneading process begins when you’re baking bread. It blends biscuits, muffin and other batters without over-mixing or creating the extra gluten that toughens baked treats. The whisk is also brilliant for beating eggs and stirring soups and sauces. An ingenious kitchen gadget - once you've used the dough whisk you'll count it as one of your essential baking tools. Made in Poland.

Mirror mirror on the wall and ‌ ...in every part of the home OVER A WALL FIREPLACE (Joanne and Keith - another idea for you)

over the bathroom sink, on the wardrobe door, at the entrance, over the fireplace, in the garden. We hang them not only as a decorating feature but to reflect light from a window or a candle creating ambience. Bathroom mirrors have evolved from the tiny medicine chest sized mirrors to covering the entire width of the countertop Mirrors are used on furniture, kitchen back splashes and even on ceilings. In a bathroom, over the sink is the rule - men need it for shaving, children to see if they can get away with just a quick swipe to their face before sitting down for dinner - and women. . . . . .ahh we NEED them for our makeup and hair ! I have a MAGNIFYING mirror (yipe - where did all of those wrinkles come from?) mounted to the side of my sink mirror. I pull it over to apply my makeup then flip it over to the 'regular' side to see the back of my hair. Lighting is important - mount lights on either side of your mirror - with at least 60 watts per - gives the best illumination. Recently I was in a clothing store and as I walked past the full length mirror I was shocked to see myself looking like I had gained weight ! ! Nosy me - thinking this was a "fun" house mirror took a closer look...I discovered that the top frame of the mirror was out further than the bottom by about 1 1/2 inches (4 cm). Better way to have hung that mirror would have been to reverse it - i.e.. hang the mirror so that the bottom is out 1 1/2 (4cm) away from the wall ! ! - This is a trick I learned from a Toronto Clothing Designer - gives a svelte look to whomever looks in. Great way to start a day!

Five quick tips to SAVE ENERGY at HOME UNPLUG

As winter settles in and Jack Frost nips at our noses, energy costs tend to climb. But we don't have to take drastic measures to reduce sky-high energy bills. Take a look at these simple changes that can be made to everyday routines to put money back in your wallet:

Rid your home of phantom energy by unplugging electronics and gadgets. Even when not in use, appliances like your TV, toaster and computer are on standby mode and still suck energy. To eliminate this waste, unplug your home electronics when they aren't in use.

EMBRACE THE COLD Wash and rinse your clothes in cold water. Worried cold water won't be as effective as hot? Think again. Detergents like Tide Coldwater are specifically designed to work in cold water conditions and are just as effective at removing stains and odours. Better yet, washing with Tide Coldwater can save you $7 per load in energy costs so consider turning down the dial next time you're washing your clothes. More information is online at tide.ca.

SLOW COOKING Nothing warms the soul better than a home cooked meal that has been simmering all day long. During the winter months, try using a slow cooker instead of the oven. Despite the longer cooking times, slow cookers use less energy than ovens.

COZY UP Install a programmable thermostat in your home to reduce your energy costs. During the winter months, set the heat a few degrees lower during the day when you aren't home. For those extra chilly nights, try grabbing a sweatshirt, adding an extra blanket or cuddling up to your loved ones. These options keep you toasty warm and put money back in your pocket.

LET IT RAIN Though a long soak in the tub can be tempting, showers use less energy than baths. For even more energy savings, keep showers short and choose a lowflow shower head. News Canada • www.newscanada.com

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

Get Freedom from

WINTER PESTS Ah, winter weather in the Comox Valley…it’s not too cold and not too snowy. But, because our winters are so temperate and creatures don’t hibernate as much as in most other areas, we often see an increase in “pests” that are seeking shelter or food at our homes or farms. If you are tired of mice and rats helping them to warm shelter in your cabinets, closets, your compost bin, or your farm-feed containers…deer eating everything left in your yard or garden…or raccoons ripping through trash or stalking your chickens, then consider humane solutions to eradicate the pests in your yard. Products that are relatively new on the market can help with this. For instance, the Raticator is a “rodent control device” that eliminates the need to use poisons or messy traps to kill mice and rats. Using an electric charge, the Raticator simply gives a shock within the chamber that kills the rodent. It runs on double-A batteries that last a minimum of six months, according to the manufacturer, whose website also says, “These new units have far enhanced electronics over the previous model, as well as a more

effective kill pad design. They are created for durability and utilize solid state electronics for years of reliable performance.” Deer are another nuisance you may love to hate, especially as they scrounge for anything green, including your garden plants. With a new product called Multi-Terrain Deer Fence, you can affordably protect your yard. This new product is less visible than traditional fencing, and is ideal for yards with varied terrain. It is UV-protected and consists of industrial grade 2-inch square mesh with a rope border. This fencing is eight-feet high and available in 100-foot and 250-foot rolls. If raccoons are your issue, consider a live trap or you may need additional reinforcement for your compost bin, garbage containers, and chicken coop.

FASHION & BEAUTY VALLEY LIVING

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

Clean Out That Lingerie Drawer

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Lingerie drawers are magical places. They contain items that nip and tuck, items that entice and items that just plain make us feel beautiful. ...And a whole lot of other junk. You see, over the years, lingerie that no longer fits our needs gets thrown in there too. It’s mostly forgotten about but sometimes it seems to mock us if we no longer fit into it or it was from a past relationship. So this New Year’s – clean out that lingerie drawer and keep what makes you feel best.

WHAT TO GET RID OF - Women need to stop living in the fantasy that “they will lose weight” and fit into a piece of clothing. Women need to enjoy their bodies now! They need to embrace themselves today! If, in the future, things change, that’s great, but until then, get rid of items you “hope” to get into one day. They will just make you feel bad about yourself. Also get rid of anything that is stretched out, stained or simply doesn’t feel good on you anymore. If you haven’t worn it in six months, you won’t miss it. Bras and underwear weren’t made to last forever so give those items that have served you well in the past the retirement they have earned. WHAT TO KEEP - Keep the things you love. The things you love are what should surround you always. Recommended lingerie basics include: • A sports bra for active times dark tops (If you wear white under • A smooth-cupped bra (sometimes dark tops it can discolour.) known as a t-shirt bra) that will give • A strapless bra for those special you a perfectly smooth silhouette events where a bare neckline is under sheer tops essential • A sexy bra for those times when you • Different bottoms for different want his or her jaw to drop when occasions such as a thong to avoid you’re seen panty lines and a control top when • A coloured bra for wearing underneath looking to smooth things out You want to keep what makes you look and feel your best because that’s what you deserve when you dress every day.

FIND THERE’S NOTHING LEFT? - If you clean out your lingerie drawer and find you don’t have all the basics, visit your local lingerie store for a custom, professional fitting. That’ll ensure that next year, when you clean things out again, your new piece will make the cut. Whether you have made New Year’s resolutions or not, be good to yourself, do what you can to be a better person and remember to treat yourself to the simple pleasures in life.

Some of us make New Year’s Resolutions, some of us don’t. Some of us make the resolution not to make a resolution. But, I think most of us would like to change or “better” certain things about our lives. Perhaps one of those things is your appearance. If you are like me however, you want immediate results and tend to get discouraged because “all good things take time”. So…… get instant gratification with a new hairstyle! I find that this new “look” propels me to improve on the other areas of my life that I feel need work. It all starts with a great haircutone that falls into place and is simple to style. Your stylist will consider your hair type, texture, density, growth patterns, curl etc. Let your stylist know things you like and dislike about your hair such as cowlicks, limpness, frizz, etc. Work with your stylist to transform your “look” and be amazed how all your other aspirations come true! Thanks to all our clients and friends for your patronage, support and friendship. “It truly is our pleasure to care for you and we look forward to spending time with you in 2013!”
