Housing market stable

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Real estate specialists are predicting 2013 to be a year of stabilization.

Members of the BC Northern Real Estate Board reported 4,696 property sales worth $1.08 billion through the Multi Listing Service (MLS), up from last year’s 4,456 sales totalling $951.6 million.

In the Gold Pan City, 295 properties changed hands in 2012 through MLS, up from 248 that were sold in 2011.

The value of these properties was $51.9 million ($42 million in 2011).

The median value of the 124 single family homes sold in 2012 was $199,000. In addition, 43 parcels of vacant land, 58 homes on acreage, 23 manufactured homes in parks and a further 30 on land were reported sold in 2012. At year end there were 233 properties of all types available for purchase through MLS, up from 215 properties at the end of 2011.

the previous year. Half of the 126 single family homes sold in 2012 sold for less than $235,000. Twenty parcels of vacant land, 80 homes on acreage, 14 townhomes, 27 manufactured homes in parks and 32 manufactured homes on land were also sold in 2012. At the end of December, there were 352 properties of all types available through MLS in the Williams Lake area, up from 342 properties at the same time last year.

In the City of Prince George, 1244 properties worth $293.8 million sold in 2012, compared with 1197 properties worth $272.1 million in 2011. At year end there were 620 properties of all types available through MLS compared to 527 properties at the end of 2011.

In the area west of the bypass, half of the 261 single family homes sold in 2012, sold for less than $228,500.

As well, 19 apartment units and 33 townhomes changed hands in 2012. As of December 31st there were 58 single family homes listed through MLS in this area of the city, compared to 49 at the same time last year.

East of the by-pass, 10

apartment units, 6 half duplexes and 16 townhomes sold in 2012. The 162 single family homes sold had a median value of $180,000.

At the end of December there were 36 single family homes available for sale through MLS in this area compared with 57 at the end of 2012.

In the northern part of the city, commonly referred to as “the Hart”, 37 homes on acreage, 13 manufactured homes in parks and a further 36 manufactured homes on land sold in 2012. Of the 169 single family homes sold, half sold for less than $266,000.

As of December 31 there were 38 single family homes available through MLS in this area of the City compared with 50 at the end of 2011.

In the southwest sector, 11 half duplexes, 13 townhomes, 14 homes on acreage and 12 manufactured homes in parks and a further 9 manufactured homes on land sold in 2012.

Half of the 240 single family homes sold in 2012 sold for less than $310,000. At year end there were 55 single family homes available for sale through MLS in the southwest sector, compared with 69 at the end of 2011.

Council discusses five year financial plan

Monday night was the first council meeting of the year, and with a new year comes a new budget and financial plan.

Financial director, Kari Bolton presented a report to council in order to review and update the city’s five year financial plan statement of objectives and policies.

“In accordance with Section 165 of the Community Charter, the City of Quesnel is required to adopt by bylaw a five year financial plan,” the report explained.

The report also said the plan must outline the city’s financial objectives and policies for the planning period.

As part of the planning process, if council would like to see new policies or objectives added, direction to staff is required.

Direction to staff is also required if council would like to remove any current policies or objectives from the five year financial plan.

Regarding tax shifting, the current bylaw states: “to consider reducing the per cent of property taxes paid by the major industrial tax class each year by one per cent.

“This percentage will be added to all other classes.

“In years where a mill closure or significant change to industrial assessment occurs, council may choose to alter the per cent shifted.”

The report said a percentage shift from major industry represents approximately a three per cent increase to the other classes.

Coun. Laurey-Anne Roodenburg told council the question she gets asked often is residents wondering what they get for their three per cent

tax increase.

“It’s hard to think about shifting tax and it’s hard to think about taking one per cent off major industry,” she said.

Mayor Mary Sjostrom said the tax shift away from major industry could make Quesnel more industry friendly.

“The shift would reduce dependency on heavy industry and help Quesnel become more investment friendly,” she explained.

Councillor Sushil Thapar thinks the tax shift is more than taking taxes away from major industries.

“To me, if we lose a mill, it’s facing an unemployment problem, 200 to 250 people losing their jobs,” Thapar said.

“A one per cent tax decrease on major industry becomes a three per cent increase in other classes which is a six per cent increase on residential taxes.

“Quesnel is built on industry, not the other way around.”

The issue Coun.

Mike Cave has with the possible tax shift is its value to the community and government.

“I don’t think I can support this shift unless we get more than eight cents on the dollar,” he said.

Coun. John Brisco agreed with Coun.

Cave but feels this shift will have to come sooner or later.

“The problem is that this is a tough love situation,” he said.

“This is about prudent management and we just have to decide how much of a shift we want to do.”

As for Coun. Scott Elliott, he feels this potential tax shift will be difficult for the community.

“The shift was difficult last year and I don’t think it’s because it was an election year,” he said.

In terms of direction to staff, Roodenburg

said she’d like to see what a .5 per cent and one per cent tax shift would look like.

In accordance to with Section 165(3.1) of the Community Charter, the city is required to include the proportion of total revenue that comes from each funding sources, the distribution of property taxes among the property classes as well as the use of permissive exemptions in the five year financial plan.

In terms of funding sources, the report stated property taxes as a good way to fund activities which are not well suited to funding on a user fee basis, such as “policing activities,

fire protection, most public works activities and administration.”

Council also discussed removing a policy from the five year financial plan which hasn’t been utilized.

Sjostrom proposed removing a policy under Section 226 of the community charter which reads “to consider a business revitalizatoin exemption program to encourage existing business owners to spend money on their facilities.

“Our goal would be to encourage reinvestment without deteriorating our existing assessment base.”

Although this policy may be removed from the five year financial plan, Sjostrom said if businesses come to the city wanting to propose a business revitalization exemption, the city will consider them and that it’s not off the table completely.

Time to gear up for Relay for Life

I

t’s that time of year again. Time to Celebrate. Time to Remember. Time to Fight Back.

It’s time to Relay For Life! That’s right, the Canadian Cancer Society is gearing up for Quesnel’s 12th Annual Relay For Life. Each year, volunteers and community participants come together to raise awareness and funds for research and cancer care services, which benefit cancer patients, survivors and caregivers in Quesnel.

Last year’s wildly successful event saw 346 participants on 34 teams raise $141,181.02!

This year we hope to grow the number of participants and teams to make an even more successful event. Zika walks audience through factors in Babine mill’s re-opening plans DELYNDA PILON Prince George Free Press

Two pictures glow from the screen everyone is looking at, one of a lush healthy Douglas fir, the other of a roughbarked wizened tree easily distinguished by anyone in the province as the product of bug kill.

A victim of mountain pine beetle, to be precise.

“Now which one would you want to build a brand new sawmill near?” Steve Zika, the CEO of Hampton Industries asks.

Though the audience stayed silent, quizzical expressions mirrored face to face as though the question were only rhetorical since the answer was obvious, Zika spoke.

“Now, don’t be too sure of the answer.”

Then he began his presentation at the B.C. Natural Resources Forum on why Hampton Industries chose to rebuild its Babine mill at Burns Lake, destroyed by fire a year ago, laying out what a company needs to attract investment in his sector while giving a brief history of his company.

Because it does a lot of marketing,

selling products like lumber, plywood and other wood products, Hampton, a privately owned business that’s been around for 70 years, is unique.

Headquartered in Portland Oregon, the company owns three mills there, plus several others including Babine and Decker, an uncommon venture since they own it jointly with First Nations.

“Timber supply is the number one factor in deciding (to invest),” Zika said.

He added he could talk about equipment and new technology, but wouldn’t bother.

He said there aren’t really a lot of trade secrets within the industry.

And, when it comes to equipment, there are only a few suppliers.

He added there is a bit more security in the timber supply near Babine, allowing for investment.

But then the issue becomes the shelf life of mountain pine beetle trees, what quality they are at and what markets will purchase them.

“They are low grade logs, so the Asian program is critically important,” Zika said, adding the infestation has certainly ended in B.C. and there will

Right around that time, there should be better markets, meaning companies can afford to travel longer distances to access timber.

They can also haul timber longer distances, perhaps by rail.

For example, Zika mentioned people are continuously talking about an amazing amount of quality timber in the Ootsa Lake area.

“Yes,” Zika confirmed, “the timber is there. But the market says if we can afford to get them.”

Comparing the industry in northern B.C. to the United States, Zika said there have been many changes in the Pacific northwest over the years.

Matthew Foisy November 13, 1972 - December 24, 2012 It is with great sadness that the family of Matthew Foisy announces his passing away on December 24, 2012. He was 40 years old.

He is survived by his Mother Darliene Foisy, brothers; Daniel and Vincent Foisy, sister; Saralyn Giguere, neices; Sapphire White (Karl Coates) and Chayla Giguere, nephews; Robert and Jack Giguere, great nephews; Avery and Elliott Coates and grandparents Terri and Gordon Hames. He also leaves many Aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles and cousins.

Matthew was predeceased by his father Howard Foisy and his sister Jessica Foisy.

We would like to thank the ambulance service, the doctors and nurses at G.R. Baker Hospital for trying so hard to save him.

Our heartfelt thanks also to the staff at Mental Health, the staff at Dengarry and Grace Young for always being there for him. Thank you to the many, many people that Matt was happy and proud to call his friends.

We greatly appreciate all the cards, flowers, gifts of food, visits and phone calls.

Zika optimistic about Canadian mill operations from A6 There are very few mills left, but the public timber supply is the real issue.

About 50 per cent of the forests are federal and hardly any wood is harvested from them. In Oregon and Washington, Chinese companies have returned, changing the dynamics of the industry and affecting the lumber prices.

“We have no control over lumber prices,” Zika said, adding neither do they have control over the purchase price of the tree.

In the southern States, most operations are longstanding and family owned, with business conducted more often down at a casual shop in the local town as anywhere else.

It’s hard for a big business to get established, hard to access wood which is available in smaller pockets in diverse places and it’s hard to find labour.

Lake and the speciality mill running there, owned in part by First Nations interests.

“You wouldn’t think they could survive the recession, but they did,” Zika said.

He added this said a lot about the calibre of workforce available locally.

In general, he said, there is a lot more experienced workers in B.C. Unions where they are well established.

“No matter what industry you are in there is a significant shortage of trades people,” Zika said.

But in the Pacific northwest there is a huge shortage of loggers, with children and grandchildren refusing to follow in their forefathers footsteps.

When it comes to transportation, the province has a railway but the product is a long way from market though there is little competition.

In the Pacific northwest it costs more to move

product via rail, though the product is closer and the option of ocean freight can be employed to move it to market.

In the south, the truck market is very localized.

There’s little regulation and government involvement in the south, but again things are informal with lots of family companies knowing congressmen and senators.

In the Pacific northwest, there are almost no political leaders who understand the sector. It is considered a sunset industry.

In B.C., though it is heavily regulated, government is highly supportive and accessible though there is significant bureaucracy up here, Zika said.

Other factors include the proximity of residual markets, like pellet producers. Energy costs, like natural gas, are cheaper.

Geographical difference, currency questions and

inherent cultural difference were also discussed.

“Overall there were lots of factors to consider,” Zika said. “It was a very difficult decision.

“What really tipped the decision in favour of rebuilding was the support of First Nations and the local community. We need everyone pulling in the same direction, and we have that in B.C.” He added they felt they had a certain moral obligation to the community.

Zika said the mill will be smaller and state-of-the-art, able to use the efficiency to its advantage.

He has other reasons for optimism. The US housing market is improving.

And the U.S. and Canada are working together on the softwood lumber board to “grow the pie”.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to cooperatively improve the market,” Zika said.

Potential

f the federal Conservative government hasn’t already thought about its penchant for omnibus bills in Parliament, it needs to.

The Idle No More movement has focused some of its attention on changes to federal legislation like the Navigable Waters Protection Act and Environmental Assessment Act, which are rolled into an omnibus bill.

These bills, often part of a budget, give MPs little chance to debate important issues because there are so many items jammed together.

The Conservatives did not invent this strategy, but they have honed it to a fine art. Omnibus bills began appearing regularly during the five years the Conservatives governed with a minority, and were often crafted in such a way as to keep at least one opposition party from voting against the government.

While this was an understandable legislative strategy, the need for such omnibus bills does not exist when there is a majority government. But the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper likes the approach, because it limits the usefulness of Parliament and the ability of its critics to draw much public attention.

That worked fine when the critics were solely from the opposition parties. But when they are from outside Parliament and are energized by a variety of causes, as is Idle No More, omnibus bills have the potential to do a great deal of harm.

The harm comes from emasculating legitimate opposition in Parliament, where differences within a democracy need to be discussed. If too many people believe Parliament doesn’t work any more, and this leads them to do serious damage to Canada’s economy because of their frustrations, omnibus bills become very dangerous.

The Conservative government has nothing to fear from its opponents in Parliament. It has a majority, and it should be ready and willing to hear criticism of its plans within an elected assembly.

The prime minister would serve the interests of all Canadians if he pledged to restrict or even eliminate omnibus bills for the remainder of this Parliament’s term.

Idle No More may be a loose and disorganized movement, but it has the potential to serve as a force for either positive or negative change. The federal government needs to choose a path which is working towards positive change — on all types of issues.

Inconvenient truth of oil pollution A

study of six northern Alberta lakes conducted

by Environment Canada and other scientists was published last week, generating headlines around the world.

“Oil sands toxins ‘accumulate in freshwater systems,’” the BBC announced. The headline in The New York Times declared: “Oil sands industry in Canada tied to higher carcinogen level.”

The study was reported with similar alarm across Canada. It looked at levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in lakebed sediment, and found levels measurably higher than natural sources since oil sands extraction began 50 years ago.

Most news reports I saw made little or no effort to put this information into context, in terms of the actual risk to humans, fish and other organisms.

Some quoted people they knew would scream bloody murder, because as we in the media are taught, conflict and fear attract an audience.

B.C. Views offices ramped up the rhetoric to battle their favourite villain.

At least one major Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, did a responsible job. Its report on the study stated “PAH pollution level remains low – on par, at worst, with an urban lake – but is rising.”

In fact, five of six lakes tested were far below average contamination of urban lakes. PAH fallout is a daily constant of urban life, from vehicles, industry, and particularly where coal is burned for electricity.

To be clear, there are dozens of different forms of PAH. Some have been shown to increase cancer risk, and some have been linked to (but not proven to cause) infertility, immune disorders and fish mutations.

So when you drive your

coal for electricity, fully 40 per cent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are from transportation.

Other sources include home heating and industry.

Berman insisted I was wrong, and claimed 70 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gases come from “heavy industry.” I asked for her source.

No response.

A 2010 report by a Royal Society of Canada expert panel calculated that 27 per cent of our country’s fossil fuel emissions come from transportation. Another 16 per cent is from fuels burned for electricity. Five per cent is from oil sands operations. Berman’s figure is conveniently untrue.

Greenpeace and the rest of the environmental scare industry want you to believe that stopping Alberta’s oil sands and pipelines would save the planet. Also wrong.

It would drive oil demand from the U.S., Venezuela’s oil sands and elsewhere, with little net effect on the climate or pollution.

kids to school, stand at the bus stop, or drink a glass of water from Coquitlam Lake or any urban reservoir, you are exposed to PAH pollution from human and natural sources. The risk from this is an ongoing focus of research, but this study confirms one thing: your exposure is likely greater in any urban area than it is downwind of the Alberta oil sands.

I argued this point with B.C.’s celebrity environmentalist Tzeporah Berman, who has shuttled back and forth from ForestEthics to Greenpeace in recent years. She took to her Facebook page to publicize a dramatic call to action from 350.org, one of the most strident climate change advocacy groups in the U.S., selectively using a quote and picture from The New York Times.

Our debate turned to greenhouse gas emissions. I argued that this PAH study mirrors the true picture of carbon dioxide emissions, which is that nearly 70 per cent of CO2 from all petroleum comes when you burn the final product in engines and furnaces. In B.C., which doesn’t burn

Taking pride in Billy Barker Days Editor: When I first moved here as a teenager, I remember being very excited about participating in Billy Barker Days.

I had never had the opportunity to enjoy something of this magnitude of calibre before.

It was a completely new experience for me.

The excitement that built in the weeks leading up to the festival was intoxicating and contagious.

People were dressed in period costume the entire week before the festivities took place, windows were painted with period themed cartoons, stores had displays depicting various scenes from the

past, entire staffs of stores were in costume all week!

Anyone could participate in almost every event.

The carnival atmosphere was everywhere!

Who would have thought that so many years later I would have the opportunity to help organize such an amazing “Free Family Festival” and that Billy Barker Days would be celebrating their 40th anniversary?

Quesnel should be proud of the fact that Billy Barker Days is the largest free family festival in BC! Our citizens should be proud of the fact that even after 40 years something that was started by a few forward

thinking people would today be known all over the country as a “destination” event that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Quesnel should be proud that our community can pull together and create something as memorable as Billy Barker Days and that those memories are still being given to our children and grandchildren.

None of this is possible without the support of our business community and our citizens who, year after year, step up and donate their time and money to helping the Billy Barker Society put on such an event.

Four days of free entertainment!

If it were not for the donations that our local businesses make that would not be possible; bands are not cheap.

Think of what you pay to attend a concert, now think of how much it costs to pay for that ticket for every person you have seen sitting in the park around you listening to that concert.

W

hen Willow Eyford received the call, she loaded up her detection dog Asia and headed to Penticton.

This wasn’t a routine detection case, although Asia has been on several, Willow and her canine companion were invited to share the stage with Cesar Millan, the internationally-known dog whisperer.

If not for Willow, Asia’s life may have ended long before her stage debut. She was a dog with a checkered past.

She is a nine-year-old rescued German shepherd and at the time Willow heard about Asia, she was slated for death.

“I took her because I couldn’t bear the thought of her euthanized,” Willow said.

“My intention was to rehabilitate and rehome her because that’s what I do.”

However, she said it soon became apparent Asia wasn’t suitable for adoption.

“Asia was safest with me,” Willow said.

“With her excellent work ethic I knew she’d excel at any type of detection work.”

Asia seemed to sense Willow was the right human for her and Willow had no problem with basic training.

But the question was what type of detection work was best for both Willow and Asia.

“I looked for what was practical for our area, a fairly simple process to put my dog to work and what would provide a benefit service to society,” she said.

“I chose cadaver detection and found courses in Maple Ridge.”

The two spent six weeks in training in various scenarios pertaining to cadaver detection.

They now have regular maintenance training and Willow and Asia have been called in on several searches.

“Although she hasn’t been in the right search area, I’m confident she would find a dead body,” Willow said.

Cesar Millan was looking for a rescue working dog for various stops on his B.C. tour and thanks to a trainer in Vancouver who had worked with both Millan and Willow – the call was made.

“He was looking for any working rescue dog or power breeds that were in service,” Willow added.

“After I agreed to join the tour, I headed out without any expectations, just me, my dog and Cesar Millan.”

Willow said when she met the famous dog whisperer he was pretty normal.

“I don’t know if he knows how big he

is,” she said with a laugh.

As with most stars, the managers and

crew handle the guests and that was certainly the case with Willow and Asia.

“The crew walked me through the process.”

Although Willow admitted to a few stage jitters, she was proud to say Asia was a professional all the way.

“We did a detection demonstration in Penticton, then I came home and

rejoined the tour in Prince George where we did an obedience demonstration.

Each show had basically the same elements and for working dogs in Prince George, they had an RCMP dog and handler,” she said.

“Cesar is very funny, very casual, charismatic and very calm. I found him very easy to work with.

“The show is very flexible depending on the content. Cesar admitted he learns something new every time. He connects very easily with people and says every new dog teaches him something.”

But for Willow and Asia, Dawson Creek was the best.

“I felt more comfortable on stage and Asia was at her peak performance, that was her best performance by far. The only thing better would be for Asia to have the chance to find a real body.”

Willow has been training dogs since she was 11 years old, when her father started importing German shepherds from Germany. She continued honing her dog-handling skills through her teens. When she got a job at the SPCA she quickly found her passion was dealing with aggressive, fearful and other behaviourally challenged dogs. In 2008 Willow graduated top of her class from Canada West Canine Centre as a Certified Master Dog Trainer. Since then, Willow has taken multiple courses on dog training and behaviour; including cadaver, bomb and drug detection.

She currently owns six dogs and is a founding member of Crooked Leg Ranch Society. Willow specializes in dogs with behaviour problems and aggression. She also teaches group and private lessons, clicker training, tracking, protection and runs the day care and boarding facility at NCK9.

today’s commonly played roller derby is done on a flat track, however, there is still a theatrical element with names, makeup and costumes.

It’s a legitimate sport with training, structure, referees and rules that empower females to embrace their femininity while also embracing their strength. And it doesn’t matter what your body type or skill level is, all training is provided.

It brings women together, teaches them to work as a team and empowers them to reach out to their communities

in a world where women are far too often pitted against one another in unkind and unfair competitions. From player to player, team to team, league to league and country to country, wonderful friendships are being made and supportive and encouraging relationships are born everyday in roller derby. Doesn’t that sound like a worthwhile thing to teach our young girls? There are three-12 week sessions offered, each session is $103

Junior roller derby teams are popping up all across Canada wherever there are adult leagues.

The closest junior team for the Gold Nuggets right now are the Spruce City Roller Brats in Prince George and they are eager to see the Nuggets succeed so they can scrimmage together.

Gold Pain City Derby girls looking to mentor The Gold Pain City Derby girls, Quesnel’s own local roller derby team, has recently branched out and created the Gold Nuggets; a junior roller derby program for girls ages 8-18.

Under the leadership of Junior Roller Derby Chair, Jennifer Bird (Pixie Chick) and her husband and head ref, Tim Bird (Flip the Bird), with help and support from the GPCDGA, the Gold Nuggets started practices, Jan. 11 and registration is still open.

The Gold Nuggets offer young women ages 13-18 the opportunity to play modified contact roller derby in the Cariboo. They have opened up practices to include girls ages 8-12 as well, but they will not be permitted to scrimmage until they are old enough.

The mission of the Gold Nuggets Junior Roller Derby is to nurture bold selfconfidence in young women by developing teamwork and athletic ability while valuing individuality.

The GPCDGA is very excited to be a part of this venture.

As the adult team grows and the lives of the members are enriched, the idea that this opportunity for females could be opened up to the next generation sparks the team’s enthusiasm.

Finishing the season off right ‘Roos end regular season on five game win streak

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Sunday afternoon, after the game, the ‘Roos gathered in a rather boisterous crowd in their dressing room.

Surrounded by the maroon and the gold, the players celebrated the perfect end to the season — five games won on the trot.

The ‘Roos ended their regular season with a flourish, beating the Williams Lake Stampeders on Saturday and the Terrace River Kings Sunday to finish the season the best they’d ever been.

“It’s always good as a team to be on a roll ­­— look at the L.A. Kings last year.

It’s the same thing with our team, we’re rolling and we know what to do. The guys want to be out there and protect each other. When you have that, you have team and anything can happen.”

Coach Brian Kozak said.

Saturday’s game against the Stampeders, the eastern division leaders, was a tight, high scoring game that made for a happy audience at the 8-6 ‘Roos victory.

The Stampeders, with a shallow bench, slowed the game down to maintain energy, resulting in a scoreless initial ten minutes. The ‘Roos waited for their chances, playing patiently, but it was the Stampeders who scored first, pushing in a rebound.

Nick Tomassetti responded just over a minute later, getting his stick on the puck during a scramble in front of the net and equalizing the game.

Levon Johnson got the ‘Roos out in front soon after on a two on one coming up the wing and Johnson snapped the puck into the net.

Brent McIsaac quickly equaled it up for the Williams Lake on a hard shot from the blue line through traffic.

With the increased pace in the latter half of the period, the hits started to come hard as both teams worked to get on top and stay there in the quickly changing score.

A minute and a half before the end of the period, Johnson came in to grab the puck after it popped out from behind the net and scored in the midst of the scramble to put the ‘Roos up.

The second started with the ‘Roos aggressively killing a penalty.

The Stampeders responded, pushing hard through a penalty kill of their own and got a goal with the hustle.

Johnson would respond for the ‘Roos, as, coming off a penalty kill, a Williams Lake mistake allowed him to take the puck in to the Stampeders end all alone and fool the goalie in a beautiful, unassisted goal.

The ‘Roos ended the period with a couple goals, with Curtis Gassoff doing the honors on a three on two at 15 minutes and Levon Johnson getting his third goal of the night after holding off on a shot close in, skating near through the crease and putting it in a near-empty net to put the ‘Roos up 6-3 as the second closed.

The Stampeders came out of the gate swinging in the third, netting a goal in the first minute.

The ‘Roos bounced back fast, Paul Girodat putting in a rebound after a heroic save by the Stampeders tender on his back with his pads in the air.

Continuing in the machine gun vein, the Stampeders came back a minute later finding the puck at the corner of the net after Manderson lost track of it and slipping it in.

Girodat came back again, coming up the right-wing and putting it past the Williams Lake’s goalie stick side.

Williams Lake would have the last goal

of the game at 4:35, with a near-last minute goal disallowed as the puck hit the netting before bouncing back into the rink and finding the back of the net.

After the disallowed goal, the game got violent, with a Williams Lake player hauling Fulton down from behind and Waylon L’Heureux squaring off against Tyler Fuller in the last minute.

Sunday, the ‘Roos faced off against the Terrace River Kings.

A young team, the River Kings really challenged the ‘Roos, who had a short bench due to injuries on the team.

“I think the boys dug down deep today.

Every period we played a very intense, disciplined period,” Bob Marsh, an assistant coach with the team said.

The game remained scoreless through the first ten minutes, until Girodat made a rush, but got hit off the puck as he was setting up for the shot, Spencer Holmes picked up the loose puck and put it up high past the River Kings’ tender.

Terrace came back a minute and a half later, finding Ryan Manderson out of position after a save and tapping it in.

Jeff Gagnon put the ‘Roos back up a minute and a half later, taking it in alone and snapping it into the net.

A shot around the boards in the River Kings end found it’s way through a couple ‘Roos players late in the period, finding two River Kings alone in the ‘Roos end. They made the best of the chance, slotting it past Manderson.

In the second, Terrace came out hard, winning a lot of small battles early on in the period, but couldn’t put anything together.

But the ‘Roos’ Kevin Nelson was able to find a rebound dribbling around in the crease and batted it in around the half point of the period, to put in the only goal of the second.

In the third, the ‘Roos went hard,

nabbing a couple quick goals to put them up 5-2 in the first two minutes of the period.

Terrace got one back at 9:29 on the power play, which the ‘Roos nullified when Troy McMillan tipped in a shot by Riley Ferster.

With couple minutes left, Terrace pulled their goalie, hoping to regain lost momentum, but Holmes hit the empty net to put Terrace even further behind.

Seconds away from the end of the game, Terrace would put one more point on the board, but not enough to make the difference.

A look back From the vantage point of a five-game streak, the ‘Roos are satisfied with their season and happy with the way the team has grown.

The team has gotten more cohesive over the season, coming together both in the locker room and on the ice in a way they couldn’t manage last year.

“This year we started out a little slower. Kozak was teaching the systems to them and now they’re buying into the system. Now we’re seeing the results because they’re playing as a team, a lot more discipline, which is huge. Everyone is making the efforts and you can see the results,” Marsh said.

It wasn’t just the players on the ice finding their stride with each other.

The entire coaching staff was new this year. The players have found the new coaching staff to be a great asset to the team.

“Our coaching is great. It’s probably one of the best coaching set ups in the league. There’s a lot of experience there,” Waylon L’Heureux, the team’s captain, said.

Super League back in super action

Getting over the over-indulgence of eggnog over the holidays, the Super League were back on the sheets last Wednesday and getting back into movement of the regular season.

On sheet 'A', A&W threw stones with Cariboo Pulp, coming up 9-2 over the mill team.

A&W took advantage of the Cariboo, who were missing their fearless ski. Cariboo felt comfortable in the first by getting two, but it was all A&W after that.

JAR Transportation and Karin's Deli took to the ice on sheet 'B', with JAR taking the game 7-4.

Investors Group and Willis Harper faced off on sheet 'C', Investors group doubling Willis 6-3.

In the feature match, patience finally paid off of Investors when they got on the board with a four-ender to take a two point lead. Willis Harper kept the pressure on, but Investors made the open hit to secure the win.

On sheet 'D' CDC took down Billy Barker 7-6.

Leaders emerge on ‘Roos from A15 The coaches have also watched as players on the ice have become more active in their roles, taking on the mantle of leadership as the season progressed.

“We lacked that at the beginning of the year, but you can see it really taking shape now. Now we’re seeing the true leaders of the team. And we need that to build a team. You have to have those leaders step up on and off the ice,” Marsh said.

Now, with a couple weeks of downtime, the team faces a lull that could rob the momentum the team has built up over the final part of the season.

Marsh has faith that with the leadership the team has found they’ll be able to withstand the calls of the couch and push forward with the same momentum, though he admits it will be tough.

And from the ice, the break looks like recovery.

“The gap is going to give us a bit of time to heal up from some

Points leader One of the high points for the ‘Roos has been the performance of Justin Fulton, who leads the league in points, with 15 goals and 25 assists.

Fulton has the most assists of the high scorers and likes to anchor plays instead of always trying for a point of his own.

“I always look for the pass,” Fulton said. “I pass to Levon and I know he’s going to score. I’m a playmaker; I always look for the pass before I shoot.”

The coaching staff is happy.

Justin is a skilled hockey player that works hard at both ends of the rink and winning the scoring race for that type of player is a credit to him and his team mates,” said Kozak.

The ‘Roos are back on the ice Feb. 2 in Lac La Hache and back at home Feb. 9.
