Capital News Tuesday, January 15, 2013 AUTO SHOWCASE 2013

Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year 2013 When it comes to pickups, details are everything – something not lost on engineers when it comes to the new 2013 Ram 1500. Forgetting trim levels, there are literally hundreds of ways to fit out light pickups due to the myriad of needs and uses. A new wrinkle these days are everrising fuel/operating costs and that means combining expected brawn with new levels of weight saving and fuel economy. It starts with the use of an eight-speed automatic transmission, the first I know of in a pickup truck. The TorqueFlite 8 also does away with column or floor shifters supplanted by a rotary knob mounted to the left of the centre stack. This “e-shift” dial is simple to see and use even with work gloves on. Appreciated by those who know trucks is the ability to shift from Reverse to Drive quickly when towing or navigating in snow, mud, loading ramps, work sites and parking lots. The eight-speed is part of a new thermal management system that quickly raises the temperatures of the transmission and engine. Ram engineers found that heating fluids as soon as possible improved fuel

Tops in the muscle car line-up: Challenger SRT8 392 With a massive Hemi motor, a performance-tuned suspension and vintage-inspired good looks, the Challenger SRT8 392 is the rangetopping model in Dodge’s Challenger muscle car lineup. The SRT is still quite enjoyable to exercise on backroads while also being a comfortable long-distance cruiser. The heart of the SRT8 392 is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The latter figure is 90 lbft better than the Challenger’s previous engine, adding a welcome kick in the pants to the straight line acceleration department. In fact, the SRT8 392 can scoot from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds. New for the latest model is a launchcontrol system that spins the engine to optimal launch rpms, then manages wheelspin once underway for the quickest acceleration possible. Top speed is an impressive 182 in the manual and 175 with the automatic.

efficiency by 1.7 per cent purely by cutting parasitic losses. The eight-speed will be standard on the new 3.6-litre V6 and will be optionally available on the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 later this year. Little details, as noted above, are a big deal with pickup buyers and the Ram has sweated a lot of them. The unique Ram Box built into each side of the bed can now be opened and locked remotely and it is also illuminated. It keeps things dry but, if needed, it can carry ice and there is a drain plug. With the eight-speed transmission there are active shutters in front of the radiator. When closed, they help direct air away from the engine bay to improve aerodynamics. They automatically open when needed. There are some 45 safety/driver aids on every Ram, most standard. With 16 per cent of Canadian vehicle sales being pickups, obviously a lot is riding on the 2013 Ram and officials in Nashville were buoyed by the fact their sales are up 28 per cent so far this year, which they see as encouraging. Could this be the Year of the Ram?

2013 CHALLENGER SRT8 392

For those more interested in cruising than racing, the automatic comes in five-speed flavor that includes both “Normal” and “Sport” modes. Sport mode will keep the transmission in the gear a bit longer, maximizing power at the cost of efficiency. Dodge upgraded the Challenger SRT8 392’s suspension for the latest model year, adding an improved version of the active damping system that includes three different settings that either optimize on-road comfort or handling responses. The latest Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 features more than 35 advanced safety and security features, including standard Keyless Enter-N-Go and threemode electronic stability control (ESC) with segment-exclusive Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support safety features to improve overall vehicle handling and performance. Test drive one today... you won’t be disappointed!

2013 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT8

It was more than just sound. There was a pulsing vibration to the noise; a physical quality beyond hearing that seemed to back the bellowing roar, making a broader assault on the senses, a sound only slightly mellowed by distance. Journalists seemed to falter in their tracks, heads came up, and pens stopped and hovered over score sheets. There’s usually one showstopper at every AJAC Car of the Year competition, one vehicle that makes everyone pause and take notice. Like the roar that was coming from somewhere out there on the test track. “What the heck is that?” I asked. Maybe an Audi R8? A Corvette? Jaguar? AMG? “It’s the Jeep,” someone answered in passing. “The Jeep?” Okay, not the first brand name you’d associate with the passing roar of

racetrack traffic, but this was the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, the most powerful Jeep ever and the fastest nonturbo sport ute in Canada. Count on the performance creds of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team to tweak the formula for this second generation version of Jeep’s ultimate performer. It’s a pretty complete package, more refined than its predecessor and this one is a lot easier to live with. The increased horsepower and torque levels give this newest SRT8 an improved power-to-weight ratio despite an added 150 kg in weight. The fist may be wrapped in a velvet glove but the punch is more potent than ever. The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. It’s a unique derivation, a model that may seem to take the Jeep brand in an unexpected direction. But in its streetwise niche, an ultimate Jeep nonetheless.

More Jeeps are coming your way in 2013 2013 JEEP WRANGLER

The Jeep brand needs no introduction. Not only is the make legendary but the vehicles are too, especially the classic Wrangler. Indeed, this direct descendant of the World-War-Two army Jeep remains easily recognizable, even as it has been modernized. Offered as a two-door, offroad capable model, the Jeep is also available in an extended four-door version called the Unlimited. In both cases, it remains powered by the popular Pentastar V-6 engine combined with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission and the manually commanded four-wheel drive system. The other popular Jeep is the more impressive Grand Cherokee; it too is offered with the same V-6 engine found in the Wrangler or with the HEMI V-8 in its regular form or high-performance SRT8 version. All Grand Cherokees are four-wheel drives, but they come in many versions, including luxury models or the race-track capable SRT8 or the all-new offroad oriented Trailhawk. But wait, there’s more! Though the

Liberty is no longer around, the smaller Patriot is still a hot ticket with consumers. It is powered by an economical fourcylinder engine combined with a fivespeed manual transmission or a CVT automatic. All-wheel is available with offroad capabilities. At one time the least expensive Jeep available, the Compass has recently been redesigned and has become a much more sophisticated vehicle that looks very much like the Grand Cherokee in miniature. It too is powered by a thrifty four-cylinder engine with manual or CVT automatic transmission and the possibility of all-wheel drive capable of vigorous offroading.

V4 www.kelownacapnews.com 2013 SANTA FE

It’s no secret that Hyundai has been riding high the past few years, with August marking 44 consecutive months of yearover-year sales gains. Such success is reflected in a 3.4 per cent market share increase since 2008, putting the Korean manufacturer in number five spot, behind Toyota. After winning Canadian and North American Car of the Year (COTY) in 2009 with the luxury Genesis Sedan, and more recently scooping three 2012 Canadian COTY category wins for the Accent, Veloster and Elantra, the company has surged up the pecking order. And so has the Santa Fe within its segment, as the all-new 2013 model has improved in nearly every way. It also now comes in two body styles. The five-passenger ‘Sport’ is on sale now with FWD or AWD, and is available with two engines: a 2.4-litre four cylinder with gasoline direct injection (GDI), and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four, also with GDI. All Sport models get a six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual shift. The seven-passenger, long-wheelbase version is simply named the Santa Fe, and will replace the Veracruz sometime during in early 2013.

2013 VELOSTER

When we first saw the Hyundai Veloster, we immediately fell in like, but when the new Turbo version took its turn, we were in love. The Turbo version adds aggression and aerodynamic stability to the stout little machine, allowing it to look better than ever. The Veloster Turbo’s unique design takes inspiration from a custom highperformance sport bike, starting with the exhaust system. The standard trapezoidal center exhaust has been replaced with two larger free flowing circular pipes that, combined with new intake manifold, also allowed engineers to give the engine a more robust sound to delight enthusiasts. The Veloster received a bigger, bolder hexagonal front grille, more sculpted side skirts, and a new dynamic rear bumper with prominent diffuser vents in the lower fascia as aprt of the aerodynamic package associated with the Turbo model. A first for Hyundai is the new Matte Gray paint that can be combined with a set of new 18” gray wheels with chrome inserts. The new Hyundai Veloster Turbo is powered by a new 1.6-liter turbochargedgasoline direct injection (T-GDI) engine mated to an in-house six-speed automatic

For 2013, the Santa Fe is longer and lower, and has more interior space – besting pretty much all the competition except for the Toyota RAV4. The Santa Fe 2.4-litre FWD includes air conditioning, heated front seats, power windows with driver’s auto up/down and pinch protection, tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, power lumbar support, Bluetooth and six-speaker AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio with iPod/USB/ aux inputs. The 2.4-litre is no wimp, producing 190 hp and 181 lb/ft of torque – 15 hp and 12 lb/ft more than the 2.4-litre engine it replaces. And with 12 percent better fuel economy. There’s much more to be said about the all-new Santa Fe. Hyundai believes this is their most important new vehicle launch since the Elantra. Demand for this kind of vehicle shows no sign of slowing down, and the company points out that 21 per cent of new vehicle buyers are intending to purchase a compact or intermediate CUV. And I’ll bet a lot of them will be putting the 2013 Santa Fe on their shopping list.

Years ago, few people would have even glanced at a Hyundai model in our driveway. But last week, I must have answered questions from half a dozen neighbours about the bright red 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT sitting outside the house. That confirms for me that Hyundai is well past the days when it sold vehicles on price alone. That’s not to say that price is not a factor in the phenomenal sales success the South Korean automaker has enjoyed, but it is only part of the story. Styling has made the Elantra, and others in the Hyundai model lineup, vehicles that people WANT to buy, not just HAVE to buy because they are inexpensive. Hyundai now has three variants of the Elantra on the market with the introduction of the five-door GT hatchback this year as a 2013 model along with the Elantra Coupe and Sedan. This has made the Elantra nameplate one of the top selling models in Canada with record sales of 5,054 units in August alone.

or manual transmission. The engine delivers a total of 201 HP at 6000 RPM and a peak torque of 195 lb–ft delivered between 1750 to 4500 rpm. Hyundai has announced an estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg city and bestin-class 38 mpg highway for manual transmission models, best-in-class specific output at 125.6 horsepower per liter, and best-in-class weight to power ratio of 14 lbs/hp. For the interior, Hyundai has added full leather seats with the word “Turbo” stitched into the seatbacks and an exclusive Supervision Cluster that offers the driver information in a larger, clearer, and more interactive format. It is also offered with standard heated front seats, while the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate a push-button starter and alloy pedals. The new Veloster Turbo targets models like the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Mini Cooper S, and the Honda Civic Coupe Si. At first glance, however, the Veloster looks to be our favorite because of its aerodynamic look, powerful engine, and impressive fuel economy.

2013 ELANTRA

All Elantra GTs are well outfitted, boasting seven airbags including one for the driver’s knees. The electric power steering features a segment first for Hyundai with the Driver Selectable Steering Mode (DSSM) that provides three steering modesã Comfort, Normal and Sport, accessed by a button on the steering wheel. We tested the top-end SE with Tech Package that came loaded with everything the GT can throw at you, including a neat rear view camera hidden behind the Hyundai emblem on the trunk lid. When the shifter is popped into reverse, the emblem tilts out to expose the camera. Cool! On the road, the GT feels like much more of a driverπs car than the sedan, largely because of the European tuning, which gravitates to the sportier side of the equation. Inside, wind and road noise is negligible at cruising speed, but engine noise picks up when you accelerate rapidly or on steep inclines. Otherwise, the car is comfortable, quiet and easy to drive. All in all, the GT is a great family car at a reasonable price. No wonder Hyundai is selling Elantras in record numbers.

2013 ACCENT

A much bigger and better Accent on the rise

Good gas mileage, loads of features, and a comfortable interior: Is that what Canadians want in a small car? That’s what Hyundai is pushing to the forefront for the 2013 Accent. The Accent goes back to the idea that practicality and good old fiscal responsibility are extremely appealing traits in a new car. At the same time, for Hyundai it’s a tried-and-true formula, and it’s what has fueled their gradual but steady rise to frugal-shopper primacy. It’s worked exceptionally well with the company’s latest Sonata and Elantra sedans, and this repositioning of ‘value’ works for the Accent, too. The five-door nails it, mixing the usual hatchback profile with the cues and details that have become Hyundai’s first real design statement. Cabin design is even better, with nice low-gloss plastics and streamlined controls that altogether give the Accent more presence than you’d expect for the price. Acceleration, ride, and handling for the 2013 Accent are all on par for this type of car. But thanks to a fuel-stingy directinjection engine, it reaches a lofty goal of

38 mpg highway for all models, whether you choose the light-touch clutch version or the clean-shifting, Sport-moded automatic. In terms of actual passenger space, the Accent’s interior is vast for a subcompact. Hatchbacks have about eight cubic feet of storage space, but both Accents have big gloveboxes and bins and trays for smartphones, energy drinks, and toll change. All airbags and electronic assists are present in the Accent. The Accent earns respect with standard stability control and curtain airbags. We consider Bluetooth a safety feature, and it’s available or standard on two of three Accent trim levels--and it’s recommended. It’s no longer the least-expensive new car you can buy--the 2013 Hyundai Accent is a much bigger, better story than that.

Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) , Lane Departure Warning System, Forward Obstruction Warning, High Beam Control and Smart City Brake Support, use state-of-the-art technologies to enhance safety by automatically sensing the MAZDA 6’s environs - from nighttime lighting, to the proximity of other vehicles - and helping the driver to respond quickly and effectively to hazards. Technology package available: (GT with automatic transmission only): Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), High Beam Control System (HBC), SiriusXM® Satellite Radio with fin antenna, Navigation (free 6-month subscription).

The best way to harvest what is essentially ‘free’ engine power under braking or when running on a trailing throttle for example, has challenged engineers for decades. The most common solution is brake energy regeneration: capturing kinetic energy (the energy generated by a vehicle when it moves) that would otherwise be lost when slowing down. This energy is used to recharge batteries in electric and hybrid cars, for example, or to power the on-board electrical network and save engine power and therefore save fuel. i-ELOOP (short for “intelligent Energy Loop”) is the world’s first passenger car system to use a capacitor to store the electricity. The all-new Mazda6 is the first of Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology models to be available with i-ELOOP. A typical vehicle deceleration phase lasts only about 10 seconds.  Realizing that the effectiveness of regenerative braking systems to date has been limited by the charging and storage drawbacks of conventional lead-acid starter batteries, Mazda engineers adopted an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), which recharges fully in only a few seconds.  An efficient 12V-25V variable voltage alternator generates the electricity and charges the EDLC; a DC/DC converter then steps down the voltage to power electrical components such as the climate control air-conditioning and audio systems, with any surplus going to the starter battery. A full capacitor charge is enough to run the vehicle’s electrical systems for a minute or so.  This makes i-ELOOP the perfect companion for i-stop – the latter launched as standard on the Mazda CX-5 and the all-new Mazda6 – as there is no need to revert to battery power even when Mazda’s idle-stop system has shut the car off.  During stop-and-go city driving, charging often resumes before the capacitor is fully discharged.  i-ELOOP can therefore produce most if not all of a vehicle’s electricity needs, whereas normally some of the engine’s output is required just to drive the alternator.  By freeing up this engine capacity, i-ELOOP increases fuel economy under everyday driving conditions.

AUTO SHOWCASE 2013 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Capital NewsC

Buick enters the compact CUV fray Buick is changing right before our eyes. Once seen as the conveyance of the bluehair set, the average age of Buick buyers is now 57 and falling as it introduces new models appealing to a younger audience. Along with the Verano, its first luxury sedan in the compact segment is the 2013 Encore that marks Buick’s first entry into the small crossover arena. Not only does it have traditional Buick design cues like the “waterfall” grille and portholes on the hood, but it has the same new, and pleasing touches like stitched leather, blue headlight surrounds and interior ambient “ice blue” lighting as the LaCrosse and Enclave. Buick says the Encore is globally designed, meaning it was styled on one continent and built on another, in this case, Korea. The Encore is based on GM’s Gamma platform, but so are a lot of other products. In this case it is the Gamma-SUV platform. Thanks to modern computer engineering, it is possible to design three or four totally different vehicles on one platform in terms of ride, handling and drivetrain and so it is with Encore. Under the hood is a 1.4-litre, variable

valve timing inline turbocharged four-cylinder producing 138 hp and 148 lb/ft of torque. That powerplant sits way down in the engine bay where you might think a bigger four-banger or even a V6 would fit such is the flexibility of the Gamma architecture. Gamma can accommodate front- or allwheel-drive and so the Encore is available as standard with FWD and optional with AWD for $1,950. Encore comes with all the safely features one now expects such as traction control, ABS, StabiliTrac pitch and yaw control and adds, as standard, 10 air bags and cornering brake control which steps in to add braking if it senses the driver is going a little too quickly into a turn. Optionally available is lane departure warning (turned off and on by a button on the dash), forward collision alert and front/rear audible parking assist. Buick engineers went to great pains not to just deal with external noise but aerodynamics. For instance there are little vertical strakes at the trailing edge of each “C” pillar that cut drag and improve fuel economy. Another notable feature is the standard

2013 ENCORE

voice-activated IntelliLink full-colour seveninch display. Move up to the Leather Package and it adds dual zone climate control, heated leather front seats, heated steering wheel and remote vehicle start. The Premium package builds on the Leather with lane departure warning, rain sensing wipers, premium Bose Audio, XM Satellite Radio, front and rear park assist, Forward Collision Alert, and 18-inch chrome wheels. Cargo volume behind the rear seats is 532.4 litres (18.2 cu ft) and 1,379 litres (48.4 cu ft) folded. Towing is not recommended. As mentioned above, the Encore has all

the luxury look and feel that a Buick buyer expects. You won’t find the cheap stuff in an Encore compared to a higher line LaCrosse. That used to be the case back in the day and a lesson Buick has learned and taken to heart. For instance there are three interior trim combinations, one being a two-tone coffee and cocoa brown you might expect to find on a competitor costing twice as much. And that is one of the reasons Buick is changing in front of our eyes. The name is the same, but Buick now gets it and that’s why they are seeing a sharp increase in buyers coming over from the imports. Buick certainly has products people want.

2013 CADILLAC ATS4

Cadillac ATS is a serious sports sedan contender The 2013 Cadillac ATS represents a wonderful insight into how GM corporate thinking and reaction to consumer interests have changed. Prior to the meltdown of 2009, GM pretty well pumped out what it thought the people wanted, the Cadillac Cimarron of the 1980s being a prime example. Based on the lowly J-car chassis shared with econocars like the Chevrolet Cavalier, it was just that – a front-drive Cavalier with a leather trim package and better suspension bushings. It put consumers off the idea of a baby Cadillac for years after. Cadillac tried again in 2002 with the CTS, a much more serious effort with rear- or all-wheel drive and a nicely weighted chassis topped off by signature, razor-edge styling. In a bold move, a completely new chassis – the Alpha – was created for a new generation of small, nimble cars of which the ATS would be first. We will be hearing a lot more about the Alpha in coming years and I suspect the new generation Camaro among them. The Alpha was designed for rear or all-

wheel-drive and 50:50 weight distribution key elements if the ATS was going to match the Eurosedans. Like the Europeans, the ATS offers a choice of gasoline engines, but unlike the others, no diesel (yet). The first is a 202 hp (190 lb/ft) 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder. Available on the bottom two of the four trim levels, it also is only offered in rear-wheel-drive (RWD). The styling leaves no one in doubt

2013 ACADIA

Technological sophistication is also exemplary in the Acadia The original Acadia crossover brought new elements of style and refinement to the category. Now the redesigned 2013 Acadia advances the world of crossovers yet again. It offers an even more distinctive presence, an athletic stance and bold frontend styling. What hasn’t changed is Acadia’s “Professional Grade” capability, highlighted by a 288 horsepower 3.6L V6 with Direct Injection. The versatility is also exceptional,

safety is equally innovative, with the industry’s first available centrally mounted front air bag. The next major advance in the crossover: the new 2013 GMC Acadia. Information, entertainment and communications technologies have merged - and GMC takes this integrated capability on the road with IntelliLink®. It’s standard on most models and features personal media connectivity through the standard Bluetooth®. The system enables you to control audio, phone book and music selection using voice-activated technology, the colour touch-screen display or the standard steering-wheel controls. Adding to your entertainment along the way is the standard SiriusXM Radio™ and its 120 channels of programming, with digital quality sound and coast-to-coast coverage. For the ultimate Acadia listening experience, the available Bose® premium 10-speaker audio system with sub-woofer. Your mobile listening room – Acadia.

VW Beetle Convertible wows

AUTO SHOWCASE 2013 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Capital NewsC

Not content with offering affordable low consumption gasoline and diesel cars; Volkswagen has added a third option with the 2013 Jetta Hybrid. You would think a small displacement diesel and gas vehicle would be enough for the fuel efficiency conscious, but Volkswagen is convinced increasing numbers of buyers feel some form of hybrid should be their next choice. According to VW, the Jetta Hybrid uses about 20 per cent less fuel than an equivalently sized sedan with a gasoline engine. In city stop/go driving that goes up to about 30 per

Audi takes Q5 to the next level

Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 2013

What better place to stage the world premiere of the 2013 VW Beetle Convertible than in the drop-top capital of the world? One of the highlights of this year’s LA Auto Show was the new Beetle Convertible with selected international autojournalists getting behind the wheel the day after the show and driving one of the great roads on the planet – the Pacific Coast Highway through places such as Santa Monica, Malibu and Zuma Beach. In Canada, we will start to get this taste of LA when the first Convertibles start arriving this month as 2013 models. At first there will be one engine, a gasoline 2.5-litre inline DOHC five-cylinder producing 170 hp and 177 lb/ft of torque driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. There is no manual. By the summer, we will start getting a 2.0-litre turbo fourcylinder again with the automatic and, at that time, both engine variants will start being badged as 2014 models. While it shares the same platform and drive train, the Convertible is more than a Coupe with the roof lopped off. Extensive re-enforcing and use of high-strength steel is used making the chassis 18 per cent stiffer than the previous model. In a rollover, the frame around the windshield acts as a rollover bar and is strong enough to support the car even upside down. In that event, there are two pyrotechnic roll bars behind the backseat that deploy in an emergency for protection of passengers in the backseat. Cargo volume remains the same at 70 litres while the 50/50 split back seat folds for additional storage. Like the sedan, the dashboard of the Convertible has body-colour inserts and that colour coordination continues throughout the cabin. With the top up, it’s quite warm and cozy with Sirius/XM on the 60s channel for any possible Beach Boys or Jan and Dean songs. With the top down, there was a very large, foldable wind blocker that certainly did the trick. There was some buffeting and road noise at highway speeds but the radio sound quality was hardly affected. A nice touch is a tonneau cover for the top that slips on to give it a 1960s Beetle Convertible look. Besides the harder steels and rollover bars, the Convertible is loaded with safety features starting with Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS), which unlocks the doors, turns on the hazard lights, and shuts down the fuel system in certain types of collisions. On hand at the press introduction were other trim levels the most fun of which were the “generational” models. These took design cues such as paint combinations and wheels for the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. The coffee brown ‘70s model with the retro full chrome wheels looking like wheel covers was my favourite.

cent. In pure electric mode that Jetta Hybrid can hit up to 60-70 km/h and travel up to 2.0 km depending on driving conditions. The hybrid system borrows technology from the Touareg Hybrid CUV using a clutch that decouples the gasoline

VOLKSWAGEN AUDI. engine when in electric mode or “coasting”. Besides regenerative power being routed back the battery when braking, when the driver lifts off the accelerator at speeds up to 100 km/h and coasts, this also serves to provide power to the lithium-ion battery. The 220-volt lithium-ion battery is located under the rear seat and weighs 163 lb. By watching the weight, the Jetta Hybrid comes in at just 221 lb more than the standard sedan. The roads selected for the Jetta Hybrid debut seemed odd in that the 7,500 foot high roads around Santa Fe, New Mexico, have a thinner atmosphere which is taxing on any engine burning gasoline, even a turbo. Nevertheless, even with the oxygen-taxing atmosphere I was able to average (US) 42.5 mpg or (Cdn) 54.2 mpg which equates to 5.2L/100 km. VW Canada has an estimated combined consumption rating of 4.4L/100 km. Driving time was limited but the Jetta was a pretty peppy performer. Handling is always a VW virtue; the Hybrid being no exception with my co-driver commenting the electric steering did not have a “wooden” feel. The Jetta still boasts the biggest interior passenger volume in the compact segment and, despite the battery back intruding into the trunk, cargo volume is still adequate at 11.3 cu ft. There is no doubt electrification of the automobile is no longer a novelty but part of the route to greener, cleaner transportation. With the Hybrid added to the gasoline and diesel Jetta lineup, Volkswagen is on the right road to that goal.

The 2013 Q5 is the latest salvo in Audi’s stated strategic plan to become the world’s leading luxury vehicle maker by 2020. Along with leading-edge technologies, Audi premium features will bring added content for 2013 at a very similar price to the 2012 models. So expect the 2013 Q5 be super competitive with BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. In Canada we will get two gasoline versions and a hybrid. But the big news is a diesel is finally coming, the only question is when. The Q5 marks the world premiere of Audi’s latest 2.0-litre four-cylinder TFSI engine featuring variable valve control, direct and “indirect” fuel injection system and integration of the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head. Another innovation is the “thermal management” system that heats up engine oil faster and also regulates coolant temperature between 85-107 Celsius for optimum thermodynamic efficiency. In the Q5, the 2.0-litre produces 225 hp and 258 lb/ ft of torque and fuel consumption of 7.6L/100 km on the European combined cycle test. With a top speed of 222 km/h, it goes from 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds The supercharged 3.0-litre TFSI engine is also new to the Q5, and replaces the naturally aspirated 3.2-litre FSI. It is rated at 272 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque giving it a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.9-seconds, a top speed of 234 km/h and combined Euro fuel rating of 8.5L/100 km/h. In Canada a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is standard for the 3.0 TFSI quattro. Standard transmission on the 2.0-litre is an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid starts with the 2.0-litre in this case developing 211 hp plus a 54 hp electric motor for combined power of 245 hp and 354 lb/ft of torque. With a 0-100 km/h time of 7.1 seconds, combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.9L/100 km/h. It can travel up to 3.0 km on electric power alone with a 100 km/h all-electric top speed. Standard on all versions is stop/start which Audi estimates saves 0.3L/100 km. For 2013, all transmissions have wide gear spreads. The idea is long gear ratios on the upper gears help reduce fuel consumption, while the short gear ratios of the lower gears optimize in-gear response. I did not drive the 3.0-litre but I did spend time with the new topline model, SQ5 TDI that Audi simply must bring to this country. The way Audi keeps upgrading, enhancing and rethinking its cars and trucks is a case study on how to run a car company. Take a spin in the new Q5 today and you’ll see why Audi keeps gaining conquest buyers and market share.

Exclusive features on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

10th Anniversary Edition 2013 JEEP RUBICON

DODGE. Dodge takes aim at compact segment with all new 2013 Dart The return of the Dodge Dart has generated plenty of buzz – especially among those old enough to remember the original. The first Darts were full-size, but in 1963, the third-generation model – available as a sedan, coupe, wagon or convertible – was built on what was then considered a compact platform. Although I’m not old enough to have had much contact with early Darts, we had plenty of well-worn fourth-generation models (’67-’76) in our high school parking lot. Many were tricked out to resemble muscle cars, but few had muscle, most having the ubiquitous 225 cubic inch slant six under the hood. Some had the 318 cu. in. V8, and a few were Dart “Swingers” which came standard with the 340. The optional 383 or 440 powerplants were less common. The Dart’s new underpinnings, are about more than providing a commodious cabin; the structure also uses 68 per cent highstrength steel, resulting in an architecture that is lightweight and solid. Good for

2013 DART

safety, as well as NVH (noise/vibration/ harshness), ride and handling. So too is the independent suspension with MacPherson struts and stabilizer bar in front, and multi-link with link-type stabilizer in rear. Over rough roads and in tight turns, the Dart felt solid and composed. What’s also surprising is there are some pretty high-end features either standard or available at this price point. These include an 8.4-inch touch screen infotainment system, 7-inch TFT instrument display (which you can customize), Nappa leather-faced seats, heated steering wheel, pushbutton start, 10-way power driver’s seat, 10 airbags, backup camera, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection. The company has high hopes for the new model, which is in a segment that this number one automaker has so far been unable to crack. By all accounts, the all-new 2013 Dart is of a higher calibre than the vehicle it replaces. I expect it will help Chrysler carry on its winning ways.

Available as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited, the Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is the most capable Wrangler ever produced. Based on the Rubicon model, it is available with a standard sixspeed manual or available five-speed automatic transmission mated to a Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 260 ft.-lbs. of torque. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition has many exclusive features that make it distinctive, as well as the most off-road capable Wrangler in history. A one-half inch increase in ride height versus the standard Rubicon model provides the BF Goodrich KM2 265/70R17 tires more room to claw at rugged terrain. The tires are mounted on 17-inch Rubicon aluminum wheels painted satin black with polished faces and a red Jeep Wrangler “icon” logo on the outside lip. Black front and rear steel off-road bumpers toughen up the exterior, with the front bumper featuring removable end caps and a winch-capable design. These removable end caps help the Wrangler climb obstacles without hindrance, and reduce the damage potential to the bumper system. Red tow hooks adorn the front and rear, and Mopar rock rails give added protection from trail damage. “10th Anniversary” badging on the fenders and a red-silhouette “Rubicon” decal on the sides of the hood add the finishing touches on the exterior. The Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition comes standard with a Premium Sunrider soft top and is available with a black three-piece Freedom hard top or body-color hard top. The interior has many special touches as well. Striking red leather seats with “Rubicon 10th Anniversary” embroidered into the front seat backs grab attention at first glance. Red stitching adorns the leather-wrapped steering wheel and the center console. A unique gauge cluster features a “10th Anniversary” signature. The passenger grab handle includes a “Rubicon 10th Anniversary” badge and features Quick Silver accents that are also found on the vent rings, steering wheel spokes and door pulls. Final design touches include Mopar slush mats, unique axle locker and sway-bar disconnect switches and a plaque mounted in the dash tray that features the vehicle’s technical data, such as axle type and ratio, tire size, transfer case crawl ratio and manufacturer location. The Bottom Line: There really is nothing else like the Wrangler Rubicon. In the past that observation cut both ways, as Wranglers were as punishing on the road as they were capable off it. But the most recent generations have become… Well, civilized might not be the right word, but these trail rides are now unexpectedly normal on pavement. With this 10th anniversary Rubicon, you can drive a pure off-roader on the asphalt with a minimum of pain. The tires don’t sing at highway speeds. The steering responds to input. The suspension doesn’t bound over bumps. It is amazing how livable a rock-buster can be.

Dodge Grand Caravan still a minivan leader Every time I get behind the wheel of a minivan, I am left wondering why their popularity has slightly decreased. For me, I would have no hesitation parking a minivan in my driveway if I had a growing family. As I have said before in this space, minivans are just so practical and easy to use. When you have lots of passengers and cargo to transport, the minivan is the way to go. And while there are far fewer choices in this segment than there used to be, the old reliable Dodge Grand Caravan continues to lead the way in minivan sales in Canada as it has done for 28 straight years. It is the biggest selling minivan of all time and again a top-five best-selling vehicle in Canada during 2012. The Grand Caravan seats seven and offers Chrysler’s versatile and functional second-row seats that fold flat into the floor. A very handy touch, I found when we needed the extra cargo space in back. All Grand Caravans come with a 3.6-litre 24-valve DOHC Pentastar V6

2013 GRAND CARAVAN

engine, combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine makes a respectable 283 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 12.2 L/100 km city (23 mpg) and 7.9 L/100 km highway (36 mpg). On the road, the Grand Caravan eats up the kilometers easily and smoothly. With 283 hp, the V6 engine provides a good combination of power and fuel economy. It is certainly comfortable and easy to drive for long-distance road trips. The steering column has both tilt and telescopic features so it is easy to get a comfortable driving position, although I would prefer that the seat had more fore and aft travel. There just wasn’t quite enough legroom for my liking; shorter drivers would have no such problem. To sum it up, the Grand Caravan is a versatile, comfortable family vehicle. Price-wise it is hard to beat. With its steady sales again this year, the Grand Caravan demonstrates that the minivan concept still provides a solid option for busy families on the go.

The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman celebrates its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January 2013; its market launch will follow in March 2013. The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman draws its power from a 1,598 cc four-cylinder engine. The latest generation of the John Cooper Works turbocharged unit blends motor sport-inspired technical details with cutting-edge innovations developed by the BMW Group’s powertrain experts. Highlights include reinforced pistons, lowweight crankshafts, an aluminium cylinder block and bearing mounts, and further optimisation of the cooling system, air supply and exhaust gas discharge system. Plus, the turbocharger is twinned with a generously sized intercooler. The twin-scroll turbocharger joins forces with petrol direct injection and variable valve control based on the BMW Group’s VALVETRONIC technology, which optimises both the engine’s efficiency and its responsiveness. The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman’s powerplant develops its maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque of 280 Newton metres (207 lb-ft) is on tap between 1,900 and 5,000 rpm, and can be increased to 300 Newton metres (221 lb-ft) for short periods between 2,100 and 4,500 rpm using the overboost function. This opens the door to gratifyingly vivacious acceleration to which the standard-fitted sports exhaust system provides a suitably stirring

MINI

soundtrack. The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.9 seconds with either of the gearbox variants. Yet despite this intoxicating turn of speed, fuel economy is exemplary for its output class. The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman posts average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 7.4 litres (automatic: 7.9 litres) per 100 kilometres / 38.2 (35.8) mpg imp. The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman can be ordered as an option with a six-speed automatic gearbox as an alternative to the standard-fitted six-speed manual. Both the transmissions and the manual’s clutch have been adapted to handle the engine’s impressive power and play their part in ensuring outstanding performance coupled with further improvements in efficiency. The automatic’s Steptronic function, meanwhile, gives the driver the option of changing gear manually using the selector lever on the centre console or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

AUTO SHOWCASE 2013 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Capital NewsC

Acura reinvents entry-level luxury with the ILX It’s back to the future for Acura with the 2013 ILX sedan. In 1996 Acura Canada came up with the EL that was really an enhanced Honda Civic but it marked what was probably the first entry-level luxury car on the market. Not sold in the U.S., Canadians embraced the EL the same way they did back a decade earlier with the 1986 Legend, the first Japanese luxury car. In the first year almost 9,000 ELs were sold and that stayed constant until about 2002 as sales started falling away due to growing competition from other makers. Acura tried to counter with the EL’s replacement, the CSX, in 2005 but it was already being outpaced by cars such as the Lexus IS, Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. Acura is currently undergoing a huge makeover to reposition itself, not just in the market, but in the minds of luxury car intenders with a whole new suite of cars such as the fabulous NSX supercar and the topline RL sedan. But the first of these vehicles will be the 2013 ILX that is expected to account for up to 20 per cent of projected Acura sales. All forecasts predict the entry-level luxury segment is about to explode driven primarily by Gen-Y/Xers and Boomers who want to move up and downsize respectively.

Acura bills the 2013 RDX compact as the nexus where “Luxury Meets Utility”. The brand is currently in the throws of trying to recoup market share across its model lineup with new product and new thinking that will see its image return to one of emotion and youthfulness. Acura will be doing this through a threepoint plan of high-quality content, enhanced driving experience and a point-of-sale experience second to none. For example, all of its 50 dealers in Canada will be significantly upgrading their operations over the next two to three years to a new corporate look. On the product front, Acura will be bringing in new sedans such as the entry-level luxury ILX that will be reviewed on these pages when the embargo lifts on April 20. Acura is only too well aware its sales recently have been skewed towards trucks such as the five-seat RDX and seven-seat MDX. And here is the tricky part of trying to bump up sedan sales. The market for entry-level premium CUVs such as the RDX are expected to grow 13 per cent between now and 2015 gobbling up the share now held by mid-size and large premium CUVs. In reshaping the RDX, Acura sees two primary market groups, the “Urban Achiever”

What they want is a balance of luxury and performance that also projects an image about the owner as being technologically hip as well as environmentally responsible. And that’s just what Acura says it is going to deliver with the ILX. Just so Acura has its demographic bases covered, there will be three separate models each with its own engine. The front coil springs over MacPherson struts and rear multi-link rear with coil springs were specially developed for the ILX and feature Amplitude Reactive Dampers. They allow the car to operate in Ride Zone or Handling Zone. Each “zone” has a unique set of compression and rebound damping settings to provide the desired ride and handling attributes. The Ride Zone provides smooth ride characteristics, and the Handling Zone enhances steering feel, improves body-roll rigidity and provides more secure handling. Assisting the driver is Motion Adaptive EPS, which is a blending of ABS/traction control/skid control with electric power steering “collaborative control” that works like this. During oversteer in a corner (the tendency to go straight) braking is applied to the outer wheels while the steering applies corrective

2013 ELX SEDAN

counter steering force. In an under-steering scenario, engine braking is used while braking is applied to the inside wheels. The ILX is bigger than the EL/CSX it replaces and is heavier as well. With a fairly long wheelbase (105.5 inches) for the class and a wide stance, the ILX feels much more substantial too. Sight lines forward are good but that has always been a Honda/Acura forte. Premium and Technology ILX models feature a multiview rearview camera that offers a choice of top view, normal view or wide view. Speaking of the high deck needed for the trunk, it’s big too at 350 litres (12.3 cu ft) and able to swallow three golf bags, two large suitcases, a large cooler or a wheelchair. Because of the battery pack being located behind the rear seat, the ILX Hybrid cargo space is 265 litres (10.0 cu ft). I spent all my driving time in an ILX Premium. The five-speed automatic comes with paddle shifters and can operate in sequential manual mode. I never use these things but for

many, it adds to the fun of driving. Road holding was solid and predicable. I can’t remember the last time I drove a CSX but I do recall it was nimble and maybe more so than the ILX. On the other hand, the ILX does ride and feel like a luxury car which was not the case with the CSX. One thing that stood out was the quietness inside especially at highway speeds. One look at the body and it is easy to see how slick it is to cut as much power leaching drag as possible. Space means I can’t list all the optional extras, and they are many, but standard equipment includes a Keyless Access System, five-inch colour central display, dual-zone automatic climate control, six-speaker audio system, SMS text messaging feature, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink cellular telephone and music interface and more. As noted, Acura is coming out of its shell with a host of new products that it hopes will reinstate the brand as a leader in performance and luxury.

ACURA. Acura shakes up its lineup starting with the RDX 2013 RDX COMPACT

and “empty nesters,” as those they want to attract. But so does everyone else. So how is Acura going to do it? Simply put, the RDX is being sold on the strength of price/content and enjoyable driving. Standard features on RDX include leather seating surfaces, heated power front seats, a power moonroof and a 360-watt audio system. New technologies such as SMS text messaging function, a Keyless Access System with pushbutton start, an Active Noise Control system and a rear view camera system with three unique viewing angles are also standard on all RDX models. The RDX Technology Package adds Acura Navigation System with Bi-lingual Voice Recognition; a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) system with 60 gigabytes of storage capacity; GPSlinked solar-sensing, dual-zone automatic climate control system; power actuated rear tailgate; and an Acura/ELS Surround Premium Sound System with 10 speakers, DVD-Audio, multi-format CD player, AM/FM tuner and XM Radio with Note function. Styling evolutionary with the 2013 looking similar to the model it is replacing. But with an extended wheelbase and slightly wider stance, it looks lower overall. Inside the front seats feel like two of those

big pod chairs you see in Air Canada’s first class cabin. Overall passenger dimensions are all increased. While there seems to be a trend toward smaller direct injection/turbo four-bangers, Acura’s contention is the V6 offers the kind of power buyers expect along with the kind of fuel economy they also expect. This done by VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) that allows it to run on all six cylinders when climbing or accelerating; four cylinders during high-speed cruise and just three cylinders on lower speed cruising on secondary highways. This is further enhanced by a retooled allwheel-drive system with “Intelligent Control”. Coming back on a highway heading south towards Phoenix, my co-driver had the RDX in “Sport” drive mode and set on cruise control at the 65 mph speed limit. Up and down through undulating hill country, the RDX engine stayed pegged at 3,900 rpm while we could feel the transmission shifting constantly. In “Drive” it was a different story as the engine did the changing, which is more what I am used to. We only covered some 65 km this way so I am going to book the RDX later in the year and find out which mode is more economical. Suspension sees MacPherson struts at the

front and a trailing arm/multi link setup at the rear. Both have been extensively engineered to impart a more German feel to handling response and steering inputs. This involves what Acura calls Motion Adaptive EPS, which is a blending of ABS/ traction control/skid control with electric power steering “collaborative control” that works like this. During oversteer in a corner (the tendency to go straight) braking is applied to the outer wheels while the steering applies corrective counter steering force. In an under-steering scenario, engine braking is used while braking is applied to the inside wheels. The initial overall driving impression was a very tight feeling to the chassis and suspension while sound deadening is a very strong selling point. I was also impressed by the excellent fit of the exterior body panels with the doors and headlights and taillights. As noted Acura is repositioning itself as a serious contender in the premium car and truck segment, the segment it created with the original Legend sedan. My initial experience with the 2013 RDX shows Acura is well on the way to reaching this objective.

AUTO SHOWCASE 2013 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Capital NewsC

Their best mid-size sedan yet

2013 ACCORD

What’s in a name can be everything and that certainly applies to Honda’s Accord. Now in its ninth generation, the 2013 Accord, like Civic, is a name people not only associated with Honda, but trust and the sales records over the decades prove that’s why they keep coming back again and again. I had forgotten the Accord was the first Japanese car built in North America. Honda has a huge presence on the continent now to the point it really is a domestic maker now. But in recent years the Accord has started to flag against increasingly stiff competition in the mid-size market coming from all sides. So for 2013, Honda has upgraded just about everything on the car but has retained the core

values of what I call “Hondaness” meaning substantial build quality and engineering along with the best materials and technology that owners know will stand them in good stead when it is time to trade in or end a lease. What I did like, besides the fuel history is trip range and phone information including with bilingual Bluetooth. Styling looks a bit more edgy then previously, but it was done to reduce drag, which is another part of the Earth Dreams mantra. The Sport has its own 17-inch alloy wheels along with fully independent suspension, which, as you’d expect, has that sporting Honda feel. Another bonus is the inclusion of hill holder assist, a feature other brands are starting to adopt. Lastly, I liked was the iPod-like click wheel grafted into the right spoke of the steering wheel, making it super simple to use instead of rocker switches. On the highway, I made a lot of use of the cruise function because it was so easy to touch the separate “cancel” button. A lot of the time, in other vehicles I just leave the cruise off because I constantly find myself looking down to find the cancel switch, as I don’t like taking my eyes off the road. The 2.4-litre is a lusty engine giving the driver the sense that most of the 182 lb/ft of torque is real, not just part of the advertising copy. The 2013 Accord, no matter which of the nine four-cylinder or V6 models one chooses, is the distillation of almost four decades of providing the kind of sedan buyers want. Once again it looks like Honda has hit the right Accord with consumers.

It is a rare event when a Japanese automaker makes big changes only a year into the normal fouryear production lifecycle. The ninth generation Civic only made its debut as a 2012 model just over year ago. More evolutionary than revolutionary, it was not surprising the 2012 looked a lot unlike the 2011 inside and out. And why not? The Civic has been the top selling car in Canada for 14 years and, along with the Accord and CRV, it is one of the three pillars that make up the fiscal foundation of Honda, especially in North America. According to Honda, they have “reworked” the electronic power Steering (EPS) to reduce friction and provide a quicker ratio, while stiffer wheels, stiffer front springs and a thicker front stabilizer bar with new Teflon-lined mounting bushings are designed for more fluid suspension action and a flatter, more responsive cornering attitude. And in a first, Civic is now offered in both cloth and leather with an all-black interior (Si model). Besides all the safety and driver aids Honda can build into a car, something new for 2013 is the SmartVent front seat side airbag construction we first saw on the 2013 Honda Accord. Honda says while it has added hundreds of dollars of extra new equipment, prices were held to $200-$450 (depending on model) across the board compared to the 2012 model.

AUTO SHOWCASE 2013 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Capital NewsC 2013 KIZASHI

2013 GRAND VITARA

Plenty of value packed in With only minor front-end changes, the Suzuki Grand Vitara returns for the 2013 model year as one of the few crossovers to tout its off-road driving skills ahead of its safety scores or standard features. The Grand Vitara isn’t really showing its age-it’s still an attractively designed SUV. It has wagon proportions, but a real four-wheel-drive system with a low range and frame rails supporting its unibody construction. The look is simple, and clean. The interior’s a fine place to work, with well-grained plastics and tight-fitting pieces, like the ones we’ve complimented in the Kizashi sedan and other Suzuki products. There’s a single engine offered in the Grand Vitara, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, and comes in either rear-drive or four-wheel-drive form. The Grand Vitara’s cabin is long, providing good leg room at all positions. In terms of GOANYWHERE. ANYWHERE. NEVER GETLOST. LOST. in a lot of value for its starting price. In fact, the base features and options, the Vitara packs GO NEVER GET model comes with navigation, automatic climate control, keyless start and entry, power doors and locks, and an XM-compatible audio system for its starting price . It offers many additional upgrades.

The discrete but so sporty Suzuki Kizashi When talking mid-sized Japanese sedans, the exciting Suzuki Kizashi is often ignored or forgotten. Yet, this great looking car has so much to offer. First of all, let’s clarify something: the Kizashi is not a small car. From far away it might look like a compact car, but its interior is so roomy, it qualifies as a mid-sized sedan. Thanks to its European look, this underrated car has both elegance and sportiness. Under the hood of this front-wheel drive is a four-cylinder engine that does not need a turbocharger to produce 180 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. This engine can be mated with a sixspeed manual transmission with front-wheel drive or with a CVT automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, even in the less expensive S trim. That option can also include paddles at the steering wheel for those who want to have a sporty feeling drive If you live in a snowy region, the AWD version could very well be the car you are looking for.

There was a time when car manufacturers were proud companies who would barely talk to each other in case they revealed any industry secrets. But, as we have seen in recent years, not many can survive now without building an alliance with another manufacturer. One of the most recent examples was Italian car maker Fiat buying out Chrysler in the United States. It appears as though the arrangement is working out better than anyone expected, with both manufacturers sharing not only parts but complete vehicles. The most recent Dodge Dart is a great example of that. Other alliances are also showing great results. Take, for instance, Subaru. After an unsuccessful venture with GM, the company is now working with Toyota. The result is the great looking Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ duo of sports cars. Both share a very similar body and Subaru’s successful flat-four engine.

Just recently, we learned that General Motors has formed an alliance with France’s PSA, maker of Peugeot and Citroen cars and light trucks. They will share development costs on parts, platforms, and even production plants. Alfa-Romeo, a brand within the Fiat family of cars and close relative to Chrysler (the Dodge Dart is based on an Alfa-Romeo), is also talking with Mazda (a former Ford partner) in order to develop a new sports car. Then there is Renault, teamed up with Nissan, who is now making plans with Mercedes-Benz in hopes of developing similar vehicles. Don’t fear a monopoly, though. We will not likely be seeing Global Motor Company dealerships in the near future, because once past the development stage each company wants to build its own marketing and sales strategy and enjoy exclusively the fruit of its efforts!

Subaru Outback and Legacy updated for 2013 2013 BRZ

Subaru BRZ is fun made simple There’s something to be said for keeping things simple. Subaru has managed to hit the affordable sportscar sweet spot with the 2013 BRZ by doing just that. The well-equipped entry model with sixspeed manual transmission starts at $27,295 and $28,495 for the six-speed automatic version while the push-start ignition with smart key also adds to the convenience of the Subaru BRZ Sport-tech Package that has a starting price of $29,295 for the manual and $30,495 for automatic. And that’s about it, one basic car with two transmissions – simple. BRZ stands for Boxer, Rear-engine, Zenith. Renowned for their all-wheel-drive cars and CUVs, the BRZ is the first front engine, rear-wheeldrive vehicle ever produced by Subaru. It probably never would have come about except for Toyota investing (currently 16 per cent) in Subaru and its exceptional engineering prowess. As proof, Canadian Residual Value Awards from automotive insights company ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values, had Subaru winning best-in-class honours for the 2012 Impreza, Outback and WRX/STI as well as being named Best Mainstream Brand for the third year in a row. Subaru is the only firm that offers a 500,000 km

maintenance schedule (that’s right, 500,000 km) because their cars stay on the road so long. With 200 hp and 151 lb/ft maximum torque, the BRZ is one of the very few naturally aspirated cars you can buy boasting 100 hp/litre. Just a decade ago this would have unheard of in a production car, let alone one starting under $30,000. There aren’t lots of gewgaws to impress the neighbours, just the right amount of standard equipment with a few upgrades but nothing to add unwanted weight and take away from the fun. If you don’t know how to drive manual, learn and this car will reward you for it. There are always those who will want more power. Subaru, like Porsche, needs no lessons on how to turbocharge a Boxer engine but how they can shoehorn a turbo into that cramped engine bay is beyond me. But Subaru being Subaru, I just know they are working on one as you read this. When it comes to the 2013 Subaru BRZ, simplicity is very much a virtue.

Subaru is proud to be different. As Ted Lalka, Canadian vice-president of product planning and marketing explained, Subaru is “an attractive alternative to the mainstream brands.” What makes the Japanese automaker different? For one, all of its models come standard with Subaru’s acclaimed symmetrical all-wheel drive system. And, being a relatively small automaker, Subaru is able to do a lot with a little, spinning several models off the same platform. An example is the 2013 Subaru Outback and Legacy models, both very successful vehicles with combined sales of about 10,000 units a year (about 70 per cent Outback) in Canada last year. The mid-size Legacy sedan and the Outback, a crossover SUV that combines car-like handling and SUV versatility, have

undergone extensive changes for 2013,the first major facelifts for them since the last full model change in 2010. Chief among the updates is a more powerful and more fuel-efficient power plant a 2.5-litre DOHC boxer four-cylinder engine that replaces a SOHC 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder. Meanwhile, fuel economy has been improved eight per cent across the board, with the Outback now rated at 8.6/6.5L/100 km city/hwy and the Legacy 8.4/6.0L.100 km city/hwy with the CVT. The Legacy is also offered with a sixspeed manual transmission on the Base and Touring trims, while the top-level Limited gets a five-speed automatic, paired with either the 2.5-litre four banger or a 256 hp 3.6-litre boxer six-cylinder engine.

2013 LEGACY

On the styling front, the Legacy has a stronger, sharper look while the Outback has a more aggressive appearance. All this results from new headlight, grille and front bumper re-dos. Inside, both models have a higher quality feel with new seat fabric and wood trim elements available. Drivability of both vehicles has also been improved through increased body stiffness and chassis improvements, resulting in reduced body roll, better handling and ride quality.

Capital News Tuesday, January 15, 2013 AUTO SHOWCASE 2013

Toyota’s chief executive Akio Toyoda has said he wants his firm to build vehicles that stir peoples’ emotions. Since that pronouncement, the first new Toyota model that might actually create an emotional attachment is the midsize 2013 Avalon sedan. As Toyota’s flagship sedan, the Avalon has an exciting new look on the outside and a refined, upscale interior. Toyota executives call it the most North American Toyota ever as everything from the design concept to the production has been done on this side of the pond. The goal of the new design is to appeal to a broader customer base, certainly a younger one than the previous generations whose buyers have been predomi-

nantly old age pension recipients. First and foremost, the more sculpted, athletic-looking exterior of the new Avalon might be the first Toyota sedan in many years to actually turn heads like the Venza does on the CUV side. With a drag coefficient of 0.28, the Avalon is sleek, and, dare I say, even sexy — a dramatic styling change from the outgoing Avalon. One neat feature is the capacitive touch switches on the HVAC display panel and some multimedia controls. This will be familiar to smartphone or tablet owners as you don’t actually have to touch the switches, just pass close to them with your fingers. The controls can even be operated if you’re wearing gloves in the winter, Toyo-

ta says. During our ride and drive, I found the cabin to be extremely comfortable and quiet. Lots of noise deadening material has been used and the results are nothing but positive. Top-of-the-line is the Avalon Premium atand it has all the Limited features plus heated rear seats, rear sunshade, pre-collision system, an adaptive radar-based cruise control and premium JBL audio system. With the price reduced, the content increased and styling dialed up considerably, this upgraded premium sedan is set to make a bigger splash than ever before. The 2013 Avalon will be at dealers in mid-December.

Part wagon, part crossover – I’m not quite sure how to label the Venza. It seems the auto industry is already chock-a-block with vehicle segments, and in the Venza, Toyota has blurred the lines even further. But no matter, it appears they’ve hit a sweet spot with this vehicle, which debuted in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show as an ‘09 model. The Venza was conceived in North America for North Americans, and it is apparent from the look that designers leaned heavily on sedan styling – with a wide stance and sleeker lines – but at the same time incorporating key sport utility attributes such as cargo space, towing ability and available all-wheel-drive traction and stability. Individual levers in the cargo hold will drop either seat, and the low floor makes for smoother loading.

2013 AVALON

Toyota’s flagship ups styling for 2013

Indeed, the Venza’s lower stance also makes it easier for aging boomers (and small children) to step in and out of the vehicle, yet the ride height is still tall enough for a commanding view of the road. Rear passengers don’t get shortchanged in the Venza, with stadium seating for a better view of the road, and exceptional knee room – even for tall passengers. Also in back is a centre fold-down armrest and separate ventilation. Toyota has always scored high marks for their interiors, and the Venza is no exception. Materials are of high quality and well fitted, with tight panel gaps. Although my tester wore an abundance of black, the brightwork added interest, and you can opt for a lighter theme. What struck me more was the Venza’s thoughtful inclusion of storage bins and cubbies, and its overall ergonomics. The styling is athletic. The Venza begins

with a bold chrome grille flanked by wraparound headlights, and all flowing into powerful front fenders. Short overhangs and large wheel openings frame the vehicle’s big 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels for a firmly-planted look. From the side, the Venza has a sleek profile, with its rear-sloping roofline and rising beltline, all ending in the angled rear hatch – and topped by a roof-mounted spoiler. Although Venza has been on the market since 2009, the look has worn well. And for 2013, Toyota has made a few tweaks to the grille and fog lamp bezel, along with turn signals, puddle lamps and a blind-spot mirror now integrated within the heated side mirror units. Overall, the Venza combines the best traits of both wagon and sport utility, and has done so in a vehicle that is arguably one of the most attractive family haulers I’ve driven in a while.

Scion’s 2013 FR-S sports car rewards the skilled driver

The ‘Energizer’ bunny for small cars keeps going and going

I’ve always been trained to look where I want to go. But it was hard to shift my eyes from the wall racing toward us. Luckily I wasn’t driving, so with a quick turn of the steering wheel, a kick of the clutch and a little finessing of the handbrake, we began drifting through the turn sideways, tires shrieking all the way. It may seem out of control, but if you know anything about the sport of drifting, it’s all about control - particularly when you have one of Canadaís best, and most aggressive, competitors behind the wheel. Toyota set up this little demonstration at the Autodrome St-Eustache, about 50 km northwest of Montreal. There, they turned professional drift racer Pat Cyr loose for about five hours, individually taking journalists and company representatives for a ride in the 2013 Scion FR-S. The point of the exercise wasnít to show off Cyr’s driving skills, but to showcase the capability of Toyotas new rear-drive sports coupe, sold in Canada under the Scion brand. FR-S stands for Front-Engine, Rearwheel-drive, Sport, but unlike the car that Toyota will be supplying him next year which will be heavily modified for the professional circuit - the one we used at St-Eustache was entirely stock. “It was truly amazing how this car was able to put up with the abuse we put it through today,” said Cyr. “There are not many cars on the market that could take hot laps all afternoon with my foot mashed into

The Toyota Corolla is like the ‘Energizer bunny’— it just keeps going and going. One of the best-selling cars in Canada year after year, the Canadian-built Corolla is now in its 11th generation and still going strong after 40 years on the market. In fact, Toyota Canada just released its latest sales figures to show that 2,371 Corollas were sold in December, and a total of 40,906 for all of 2012— an increase of 11.6 per cent over the year before and 43 per cent of all Toyota car sales for the year. Not bad for a car with the current generation nearing the end of its shelf life and the 12th generation set to launch as a 2014 model. So why still such strong sales numbers now for the Corolla? What the Corolla offers in spades is affordability, reliability and fuel efficiency. And although there are a great many impressive new entries in the segment, the Corolla continues to satisfy thousands of dedicated followers in this country. The base CE trim level that even offers a moonroof package, which Toyota says is the lowest-priced car with a moonroof in the compact segment. My tester was the above-mentioned CE with moonroof package and four-speed automatic transmission. What you get for that price is a solid, reliable compact car that is no longer all that compact. In fact, it is fairly spacious inside although rear seat legroom is at a premium when the front seats are in their rearmost positions. At the top of the ladder is the Corolla LE, with 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front

2013 SCION

the floor. You can beat on the car all day, drive it home from the track and take it to work next day.” Indeed, the FR-S tips the scales at only 2,758 lbs, and its weight is distributed 53/47 front-to-rear. This creates a vehicle that loves to corner, with just enough understeer to make it fun. Lightweight 17-inch alloys, shod with not overly sticky 215/45/R17 summer tires help you kick out the back end when needed. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) works to prevent this, and Sport VSC allows the rear tires to slide out a little. Or turn the system off for better track performance and the full drifting experience. All this along with a lower centre of gravity than Porsche Cayman, Nissan GT-R and Subaru WRX. The six-speed manual shifter, as expected, was a joy to work. It has short, tight throws, just the right amount of friction and plenty of feel. It was the perfect accompaniment to this free-revving engine. Sure, it’s great fun on your daily commute, but drive it hard and you’ll find out what Akio Toyoda meant when he demanded a car that was “built by passion, not by committee.”

2013 COROLLA

seats, metallic dash accents, steering wheel controls, cruise control, keyless entry, power moonroof and fog lamps. In the dash is a 6.1-inch display screen for the new-for-thisyear six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth. Optional is an Upgrade Package with eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, automatic climate control, automatic headlamp system and smart key with pushbutton start. A Premium Package features an upgraded audio system with navigation and wood grain interior trim. The cabin of the CE-trimmed Corolla is fairly basic with easy-to-use controls. The two-tone colour scheme is attractive and the seats proved to be comfortable, even after our four-hour drive to visit friends during the holiday season. On the highway, once up to speed the Corolla cabin is quiet and the ride is soft and cushy. Be sure to put the Corolla on your shopping list because even after all these years, it still has a lot to offer in the way of basic, affordable transportation.
