Who says you have to know how to skate in order to play hock­ ey? Certainly not the fans of the increasingly popular game of boot hockey.

Boot hockey is called many differ­ ent names, but is basically a blend of hockey and broomball that is played with a stick rather than a broom, making it easier to control the puck. However, as it is played without skates, it is a different type of challenge to move around the skating rink.

Strategic positioning of the players on the ice is the secret of a success­ ful boot hockey team. Once in posi­ tion the players must handle precise passes, as it’s practically impos­ sible to move quickly to capture the puck.

Even though it’s preferable not to run in boot hockey, fast play­ ers still have an advantage over their adversaries in capturing the puck. It is also an advantage to play regularly with the same team­ mates so that players can learn to be comfortable with strategy and passing style.

One of the great things about boot hockey, when compared with regu­ lar hockey, is that it costs a lot less to play. That is because play­ ers only need a few of the usual pieces of equipment used in ice hockey. In addition, because it’s more often than not played out­ side, the cost of ren­­ting ice time is a lot chea­per than in an arena.

That also means that boot ho­ckey players have the ad­ded advantage of getting lots of fresh air while they play.

The price of snowshoes varies, depen­ ding on the quality of the materials used. If you’ve never tried the sport, start by renting a pair to ensure that you enjoy the experience. Once you’re ready to blaze new trails, be sure to carry a bladder-bottle of water and some snacks that won’t freeze, because exploring can make you as thirsty and ravenous as a bear.
