There’s no shortage of secondary suites and carriage houses in the rural areas of the Regional District of Nanaimo, despite the fact they’re illegal. Now, the RDN is trying to bring its bylaw into line with this stubborn reality. The issue arose at Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting as RDN staff presented a draft of its secondary suites consultation plan. Chief administrative officer Paul Thorkelson said the district decided to deal with the issue in order to save staff, residents and directors from having to deal with a potential tidal wave of trouble from the disconnect between the bylaw and the reality on the ground. The race to decide who will be the next MLA in the Parksville-Qualicum constituency got a little more crowded this week with the announcement of a potential candidate for the B.C. Conservative Party. Nanaimo radiologist Dr. David Coupland is expected to be the sole candidate for the nomination when the party holds its nomination meeting this Sunday in Parksville. People are watching Parksville city council meetings online. After struggling to find an appropriate online video streaming and archiving service, they began streaming meetings in October and may slowly be building an audience. The live viewership is low — nine people Oct. 9, four Nov. 5 and 25 Dec. 17 — but there were more than 1,000 plays throughout December, for an average of 4.3 minutes each. The meetings are archived on the city’s website (www.parksville.ca) by date, and individual agenda items are time stamped so people can jump to a specific discussion. POWELL-DAVIDSON Information officer Debbie Tardiff said the response has been better than she expected. “I’m really delighted to see this finally going forward,” Coun. Carrie Powell-Davidson said previously, calling it a perfect fit with council’s efforts to be as accountable and transparent as possible. Council went with a service provided by Burnaby based NeuLion for a one-time set-up charge of $4,000 and annual fee of $8,150.

Two cabinet ministers, an MLA and a town councillor heaped praise on their star candidate Tuesday night as Michelle Stilwell officially became a B.C. Liberal Party standard bearer for the May 14 provincial election. The Paralympic multi-gold medalist and world champion was unopposed as she accepted the nomination from the Parksville-Qualicum constituency association. There were about 90 people at the meeting at the Parksville Civic Centre while a heavy rain that was snow elsewhere in the riding reportedly kept many members off the roads and away from the meeting. “The economy will contin-

ue to grow and prosper with free enterprise and the B.C. Liberals leading the way,” said Stilwell, 48, who seeks to hold a riding currently represented by fellow B.C. Liberal Ron Cantelon, who announced late last year he would not seek a third term in the B.C. Legislature. “This is a winnable seat and we can do it.” The motion to nominate Stilwell was made by Town of Qualicum Beach councillor Mary Brouilette and seconded by Cantelon. structure Mary Polak implored the crowd to get involved in the campaign. Like Stilwell, Cadieux, the MLA for Surrey-Panarama, is a paraplegic who uses a wheelchair. “I don’t think she (Stilwell) is spectacular in any way and I don’t think she’s special in any way,” Cadiuex said, drawing laughter from the crowd. “I do, however, think she is an exceptional human being.” “It (running for office) takes someone with quite a spine and Michelle has that.” Brouilette called Stilwell “someone you really want to know.”

Imagine a magical place full of free community actives, social programs, toys, movies, video games and all the free music, e-books and help with technology you’d like. Today’s libraries offer it all, plus they still have the books and quiet spaces. “I know there’s debate about the death of libraries but I think they’re just breathing a new life,” said Qualicum Beach library manager Eileen Gillette, who finds this an exciting time for the venerable institution. Gillette and Parksville-Bowser library manager Janet Delgatty recently spoke to The News about the speed of change and all the new services in today’s libraries. “Librarians were always about how to use the tools, but we’re even way more about that now,” said Delgatty. “People who can figure out, for instance e-books on their own, do. The people that we help are often people who need extra help

with the technology.” “It’s wonderful to see people, I don’t want to stereotype, but often older people who we help and they’ll come back and say ‘I’ve got it and I’m reading e-books all the time’ and they’re in their 80s,” she said. “Our roll is becoming more multifaceted, we do the same work but it’s being used in different forms and platforms,” Gillette said, suggesting in the Vancouver Island Regional Library system at least, “libraries are moving with the change.” While people are still using libraries as much as ever — with the number of items borrowed going up around eight per cent a year — only about half of users borrow a physical book. “I really like the word ‘experiencing’ libraries,” Gillette said, “so when you walk in the door you may want to get a book, or you may find electronic resources or think ‘oh I can read a bunch of magazines,’ or bump into somebody, and I think that will only increase as there are more

e-books and electronic services which will open up more space.” E-books, or digital books that can be read on computers, smart phones and e-readers like Kobo, are booming. “Everybody was buying their grandparent e-books the last two Christmases,” Gillette said. “I have actually thought, I wonder what I used to do before I helped people with e-books,” Delgatty quipped, “and we were really busy before.” Members currently have access to over 15,000 e-books, which people are also using as a way into the newest technology. “When people get e-books we’re not only showing them how to download it, we’re showing people how to use it,” Gillette said. “We’re helping people create e-mail addresses or search things on the net, I think with this whole digital divide there is a segment of the population we deal with every day that we try to train.” And there are many new services to explain, including things like Freegal, where ev-

ery song in the Sony Music library, hundreds of thousands of songs are available for free downloads that you can keep — unlike e-books which expire after a few weeks. While limited to three songs a week, Delgatty said it is a great, easy to use system and while she pointed out they also have Zinio, a digital magazine service people can browse, she wished it worked more like Freegal. “We’ve actually offered access to full text magazines for years, but its the popularity of e-books now that is popularizing that service too.” The technology is also improving access to standards like consumer reports and automobile repair manuals which people can now access — and keep — without going to the physical library. There has also been an explosion in self publishing, which Delgatty pointed out has been around for decades but exploded in the desktop publishing era and really took off with e-books.

“If somebody lives in our service area and they’ve published a book, we will put it in the collection as long as it meets our overall criteria,” Delgatty said. The library is reflecting changes across society, Delgatty said, pointing out that with each new technology people predict the death of the previous media, but “it’s not that we’ve given up on any of those other things, people want our books and our movies and our TV and Internet, so what will it look like in 10-20 years?” “I think its’ win win,” Delgatty said, “because if we still need this space, then we have it, if we don’t then we’ll have the space for a community gathering place and programs and partnerships.” Those programs are also booming, with local branches offering dozens from more traditional like guest authors, storytime for kids, babytime, dad’s night and literacy programs, along with sessions on e-books and Skype. The two local branches have about 18,000 members together, which is good, but Delgatty points out it is short of their catchment area of about 24,000, so there are plenty of people out there who have yet to discover them. It’s also promising, they note, that their members’ ages roughly reflects the community’s demographics. Around 90 percent of their users are adults, compared to 84 per cent of the population and that hasn’t changed much in previous decades. The physical space doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. In fact the VIRL is working on new branches in north Nanaimo, Sooke and Lake Cowichan and Gillette points out libraries still rank high with schools and hospitals in people’s choice of where to live. And while it looks like they might compete with community centres, Gillette suggests the educational aspects make them different. “We have so much access to information, but what kind of information are you getting? The Internet’s a big mess of things — part of our job is not only providing access to it, but showing sourcing and what’s accurate or not,” Gillette said. “Our job is more the tools, facilitating that process.” But while there are questions about the future, Delgatty is clear about their importance. “Its the ultimate democratic institution, publicly funded, it provides pretty much unrestricted access to information and is open to everybody, that’s democracy in action.” Stop at your local library or check http://virl.bc.ca for more information. “The point of the exercise is that the existing zoning bylaws in all areas do not allow secondary suites,” he said. “However, they exist in great numbers all over the place. We want to try to bring the existing zoning bylaw into line with the community’s wants, needs and desires. As it is, if we get a report about a secondary suite, we need to bring it to the board for enforcement action and we don’t want to do that. It’s not fair to the people, to staff or the board.”

His concern about the residents living in the suites was echoed by Cedar director Alec McPherson. “All you need is a complaint,” he said. “Where income is very low and people are just making it, the next place for them is in the woods or on the street and I’m just not comfortable with that.” The consultation plan, Thorkelson said, is designed to find out what is wanted and needed in each of the rural areas in the RDN

“This is about where and how community members support allowing secondary suites,” Thorkelson said. “There will be presentations, workshops, online surveys and we plan to take advantage of existing community networks. We will compile the results and give a recommendation to the board. Based on the board amendments, a new bylaw will be drafted.” Directors agreed to receive the draft consultation plan and continue with the community consultation process.

We need to get our act together here and we can provide a terrific future, filled with opportunities for our kids.” Coupland was born in

Edmonton but has lived in British Columbia for the past 30 years and on Central Vancouver Island for the past 16 years. He said the timing was right for him to jump into the political fray. “My family is raised and if I’m ever going to do this, now is the time,” he said. “I’ve always been inter-

ested in politics, but I’m mainly doing it because I think we need better government for future generations. We need to bring people together.” The nomination meeting that will likely see Coupland annointed as the candidate kicks off at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.

Where do you go to ask your big question?

Woe is the poor Leafs fan PQ

hen I was little my father had two pet peeves: the Toronto Maple Leafs and By Ray Smit the Beatles. Dad hated the Fab Four without hesitation. “All that hair and those long sideburns! Terrible. And I bet they get sore throats with all that singing about revolutions and such.” He was also a fountain of vitriolic attacks on the Leafs. But that was different because dad loved the ‘Buds’ with a burning passion. After winning the Stanley Cup in the spring of 1967, he was mortified at their utter collapse just a few short months later. Dad was also unimpressed with the Leaf rumour mill that fed the Toronto sports pages every autumn. Year after year, we were led to expect a blockbuster trade that would turn the team around. Are you listening Roberto Luongo? And every year we were disappointed. “The Leafs are like my rototiller,” dad would say. “Every fall they stir up some dirt and then they spend the winter in the basement!” That was never more true than in 1968 when dad’s two pet peeves intersected: That fall, Leafs goalie Bruce Gamble arrived at training camp with extra long Beatles–style sideburns. I, of course, thought he looked way cool! Dad did not. Neither did Leafs GM Punch Imlach, who walked into the Leafs dressing room, took one look at Gamble and summarily ordered him to shave them off. He then turned to all the rookies on the team and ordered them to shave too. The Toronto papers and local TV stations had a field day with the story. Would Gamble, a man’s man, allow Imlach to boss him around? Wagers were made and even Imlach got into the fray betting two sportswriters that Gamble

would cave. The story was a big deal in our house too. Somehow I knew that if Bruce’s battle was lost so was my hope of getting a Beatles haircut. A few days later, Gamble arrived at the dressing room freshly shaven. The rookies immediately followed suit. My dad was jubilant. I was crushed. When it was time for my next haircut there were no negotiations. “If short hair is good enough for the Leafs, it’s good enough for you.” Several years later I read Punch Imlach’s autobiography. That’s when I learned the rest of the story. It seems that Bruce Gamble met Punch during the summer of ‘68 to negotiate a new contract. They were only five hundred dollars apart when Punch said, “If you lose the sideburns I’ll give you the extra money.” Bruce readily agreed. But Punch told him to wait until training camp so they could have a little fun with the rookies and the reporters. The fix was in. Bruce didn’t cave; he got paid. And the reporters got stung. But give Imlach credit. He split his winnings with Gamble 50-50. As you may have guessed by now, I’m a lonely Leafs fan here in Canuckland. And believe me I’ve heard all the jokes: What’s the difference between the Leafs and the Titanic? There isn’t one. Both of them sink to the bottom as soon as they hit the ice. What do you call a guy who’s only got one goal this season? The Leafs leading scorer. Before you Canucks’ supporters pile on, here’s a reminder: The Leafs may be a joke to you, but they’ve won 11 Stanley Cups. And that’s 11 more than the Canucks have. When Errington artist Dan Gray joined a group of some of Canada’s most celebrated artists in June 2012 to participate in a project supporting efforts to protest the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, he had no idea how profoundly his life would be affected by the journey. Not only is Gray featured in a film produced by the Raincoast Conservation Organiza-

Liberal candidate Michelle Stilwell was over Tuesday night, The NEWS posed some tough questions for the woman who wants to represent the people of Parksville-Qualicum in the B.C. Legislature. The NEWS: You said you will soon be leaving the country for seven weeks to train in Australia for the world championships. Are you leaving the campaign for seven weeks? Stilwell: Have you heard of technology? There is Skype and e-mail and phones and Twitter. I don’t train 10-12 hours a day. I will stay up to date on all the current issues. The NEWS: Sounds like you have it figured out. Stilwell: I always have a plan, I have to, that’s how I operate. I think it says a lot about my character that I’m going to stick to that commitment (to compete at the worlds) and be true to my word. And it (the commitment to the worlds) came about before I knew

The NEWS: On the day you were presented with the key to the City of Parksville in September, you said your competitive drive was still there and participating in the Paralympics in Brazil in 2016 was a real possibility. Are you going to compete in Brazil in 2016? Stilwell: I think Brazil is going to be amazing. The NEWS: As a holiday destination or a competitive destination? Stilwell: I think the Olympics and the Paralympics in Brazil are going to be amazing. The NEWS: OK, I guess we can talk about that some other time. The NEWS: Someone who wants to be an MLA, one would think he or she would have confidence in our education system. You home school your son Kai. Stilwell: Why do I do that? The NEWS: If you don’t mind me asking. Stilwell: Not at all. Kai is autistic and the cookie-cutter school system doesn’t work for my son and his needs.

The NEWS: Can our school system do better for autistic children? Stilwell: I think each parent has to take their own child into consideration and what works best for their family. It worked best for me as an athlete who travelled around the world representing Canada, for me to have Kai along. Last year I was in Australia for three months — I couldn’t be away from my son for three months. The NEWS: So it’s not any kind of condemnation of our school system? Stilwell: Not at all — we have amazing teachers here. The NEWS: Lastly, is there one issue in this campaign specific to Parksville-Qualicum? Stilwell: I can’t say there is one specific issue at this moment, but the economy and jobs are always key and seniors in this community need to be taken care of. Forty-seven per cent of our population is over 65. As someone who is 48, I have to plan for the future because one day I’m going to be that senior, make sure the proper things are in place.

The concession area is approximately 130 sq. ft. in area and contains a hood with fan, counters and sink only. The Lessee must provide all other equipment necessary to operate a food concession service. The successful applicant will be required to enter into a contract with the City in keeping with “Food Concessions in the Community Park Policy No. 3.18”, obtain a business license and provide proof of a minimum five million dollar public liability insurance coverage with the City as an additional named insured. As well the Lessee will be required to obtain any and all necessary permits for operation of a concession and will be permitted to operate from the Victoria Day weekend (May 18, 2013) to the Thanksgiving Day weekend (October 14, 2013), seven days a week between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Prior to submitting a tender, interested individuals are requested to obtain a copy of the Food Concession Information Package to ensure their submission will meet all the necessary criteria. A rock and a hard place

he list of combatants is almost complete and the first shot across the bow has been fired. The provincial election is set for May 14 and now the B.C. Liberals, NDP and Conservative Party have their candidates selected. We expect the Greens to follow soon. First, we have to say how much we enjoy the fact we can tell you, and could have told you a few years ago, the election is set for May 14. It’s almost hard to imagine having elections timed by the whim of a party whip and the ruling party’s place in the polls, but that’s how it was for more than 100 years. At Michelle Stilwell’s acclamation meeting Tuesday night, departing Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon took a jab at those who would try to unseat the B.C. Liberals here: “We are going to thrash whatever pathetic opposition there is.” Now, this was said amongst party faithful and in a raw-raw-fire-up-the-campaign context, but it was a juicy tidbit nonetheless in a nomination meeting that had little, sorry, no drama. The emergence of Stilwell as the de-facto incumbent in this race has to be troubling for her opponents, especially the NDP’s Barry Avis. While Avis has repeatedly said he wants to keep this campaign about the issues and not personalities, he is now facing a national and local hero who has overcome much to reach her goals. In the political arena, perception can count for much. If Avis was to press Stilwell about her imminent departure for seven weeks to compete in the world championships, or her reasons for home-schooling her son, or her plans for the Paralympics in 2016, or her lack of political experience, some might be turned off the NDP candidate. Like really, how do you look good going on the attack against a local hero? Fear not, Barry Avis, or other candidates. That’s what we are here for. We have no problem asking Stilwell the tough questions and we do so today in a wide-ranging Q&A on page A9. Letters TROUBLING NUMBERS Re: Idle no more and Theresa Spence, Chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation. Here we go again. A year ago, we were blamed for all the trouble at the Attawpiskat First Nation (AFN). Now she is going one better â€” she is on a hunger strike and will die for her people if that what it takes. Well, sheÂ doesÂ not need to worry about dying as this is not a hunger strike, just an attention grabber, and she loves attention. Here are a few facts about Spence and the AFN â€” all figures are taken from their website and are the result of an audit by an accounting firm from Timmins, Ont. 2011 total revenue: $34,414,888. Total expenses: $31,174,847. Surplus for 2011: $3,140,041.Â Accumulated surplus at the end of 2011: $60,686,128. A trust fund was set up in 2007 to receive yearly payments from the mining company DeBeers. In 2011 $2,050,000 was received from DeBeers.Â The accumulated surplus in the trust fund was $8,862,964 at the end of 2011. They have a capital account (in trust) that holds $9,553,739, all of which is invested in the stock market. Included in the trust is $612,882 in Government of Canada bonds. Think about it â€” they receive free money from you and I, then lend it back to us and we pay them interest on it. How crazy is that? But I guess we should blame the fools in Ottawa for allowing that. Figures supplied by the AFN show a population of approximately 1,800, yet they

have a council of 22 people, including two chiefs and one deputy chief. Plus they have five unelected officials. Their reported salary and honouraria is $978,989. They report having approximately 600 students attending school and they haveÂ 14 school board members, who in 2011 were paid a total of $223,640. Total reported spending on salaries for council and school board wages: $1,202,629. They also report administration fees of $3,290,047 and further wages/benefits of $11,228,614. Take off the reported $1,202,629 for council and school board salaries and you are left with $10,025,985, Well, where did it go?Â The auditor attached a few pages to his report indicating that the AFN finances were a mess and they have no way of tracking the money. It does not have to be this way â€” there are numerous First Nations in Canada that are doing extremely well, but they are usually found in areas where there are opportunities for employment.Â Here is a suggestion: use some of the surplus money and build homes (you have the funds) and educate your people and stop blaming every one else for your trouble. True, as we see with the continuing obsession for growth in our neighbouring community to the south. In Qualicum Beach, I doubt that Hardingâ€™s view of being â€œpumped on 2013 â€œ is shared by the majority of citizens. For those wanting a larger-city lifestyle, Nanaimo and Courtenay / Comox beckon from just a few miles away. Those of us who chose small town Qualicum Beach as our home are not looking to see a similar-sized city of â€œQualiparkâ€? here in District 69 with all the attendant problems of water supply, air quality, noise, congestion, destruction of natural environment, etc. One of lifeâ€™s current major controversies is the clash between conservation and economic growth. A balance between the two must be found. Pushing for more and more development and growth is not the answer when it ruins our quality of life (one might suggest relaxing the law on murder in order to improve the fortunes of funeral homes). No, sir. Development and the short-term jobs it provides does not balance the loss of lifeâ€™s natural bounty. Those councillors who are â€œdriving the long-overdue changes in attitudeâ€? give first priority to business and development. The â€œunique nature of the communityâ€? will not survive the urbanization that such a policy will bring. We must hope that the remaining two years of their power will be insufficient to do the irreparable damage that threatens.

Investigation continues into tragic sinking

40-year-old Courtenay woman is dead as the result of a boating accident near Union Bay on Monday afternoon. The tragedy happened when the 30foot sailboat she was in ran aground near Argyle Road in Union Bay. A helicopter rescue crew from 19 Wing Comox, along with members of the RCMP, raced to the scene. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria received a call from a concerned citizen living in the area who spotted the boat listing on the beach. A vessel from Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Unit 60 from Comox and 19 Wing Marine Section Auxiliary Training Vessel Albatross also responded to the initial call. Search and rescue technicians were dropped off on the beach to assess the situation and found a 44-year-old man in the water. The man was brought to shore and transferred to RCMP. A woman was found in the wa-

Richard Hudson reports that despite a forecast of up to 35knot winds, the true wind did not exceed about 10-12 knots and finally almost petered out as the race concluded. “The sun shone on the racers for part of the race, resulting in a great afternoon of sailing,” he said. “Finally the wind made it to the Schooner Cove area late in the evening — after all the boats were put to bed!” Brian Robinson in Flight took first place, followed by Neal Berger at the helm of Shingebiss in second place and Gary Davis in Dash took third spot. The next race in the Hot Rum series is slated for Sunday Jan. 13.

The B.C. government is rolling out its new high-tech medical services cards starting Feb. 15, in an effort to phase out millions of CareCards in the hands of non-residents. The new cards will be combined with the B.C. driver’s licence, with a similar “BC Services Card” available to those who don’t drive. Residents will be required to re-enrol to renew the card every five years, whether they drive or not. Qualified residents can enrol in the Medical Services Plan at any provincial office that issues driver’s licences. There is no fee for the health services card only. The current $75 fee for a five-year driver’s licence renewal will apply to the new combined cards, discounted to $17 for seniors. There is no requirement to get the new card until your driver’s licence needs to be re-

If the church we attended was not available to us, where would we each choose to make our church home? We didn’t ask the question because we were planning on this happening, but we were trying it as an exercise to probe how we decide where we worship. What is it about your church that keeps you coming back? What are the essential elements that make your congregation a place that gives spiritual life? seemingly unerring ability to miss the point in much of what Jesus had to say. But then something happened and things changed radically. They were transformed into a group of losers and misfits who not only started to get the point of Jesus’ words, but began to live in an extraordinary way. They became people of “the way,” and that way is described vividly in those last 6 verses of Acts 2. They didn’t have a building, a budget, or a bulletin. But they did have the Holy Spirit … and that was enough. If your present church disappeared tomorrow, where would you go? I’m pretty sure of the kind I’d go looking for. The Rev. June 8, 1939 - January 3, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. The end came more quickly than anyone expected, but was peaceful. Jim was full of life, and relished every moment he spent with his family. He enjoyed a rich and active life and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He will live on in the hearts of his wife Val, daughters Jennifer (Rigo) and Christine (Iain), grandchildren Christina, Sarah, Daniel and David, family in Scotland, Ontario and Quebec and his many valued friends. A celebration of Jimâ€™s life will be held at Eaglecrest Golf Course, Friday, January 11th, at 2 pm. James Neil Chapman Our beloved Neil passed away suddenly at St. Josephâ€™s Hospital, Comox, B.C. on Dec. 31, 2012, in the presence of his loving wife Margaret and Alasdair. Predeceased by his parents Clifford and Meryl Chapman, brother Gordon, infant son Craig and infant grandson Shael, he is survived by his wife Margaret, brother Donald and his wife Isobel, Joyce and their children, Brent, Karen (Brian) Wood, David, Susan (Paul) Austring, stepchildren Fiona (Tom Broadley) and Alasdair Ring, and his beloved grandchildren, Colter, Casey, Micah, Raya, Darryl and Gemma. Neil was born in Saskatoon, April 6th, 1928, but soon thereafter the family moved to Regina where he had a very happy childhood and made life-long friends. The family loved to hear his stories of the fun and adventures he had with his brothers Gordon and Don, and friends. Neil spent many years in Regina raising a family with his wife Joyce and working for Imperial Oil Ltd., Marketing Dept. He lived in Edmonton for some time before moving to Victoria in 1977 where he worked for the Ministry of Forests and the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing. Neil and Margaret were married in 1986 and retired to Qualicum Beach in 1993, where Neil had many happy years golfing at Eaglecrest, with old friends and new. In 2011 they then moved to Comox to be near Fiona, Tom and Gemma. Neil had a passion for flying and earned his pilotâ€™s license while working for Imperial Oil. To celebrate his 80th birthday, he had a flying lesson, flying above the shoreline of Qualicum, Parksville. He was an avid skier, a nimble Scottish country dancer, and an expert at growing roses. â€Ślet the rose blossom each year for his sake. Rilke Cremation will be followed by private family services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the M.S. Society.

Sheila Ackerman

Our Mother Sheila Ackerman passed away January 5th and we are sure she is now happily holding hands with A.J. Momâ€™s family and friends will remember the graceful and welcome home she created as a solid base for so many of us throughout our lives. Sheila filled her home with food, laughter, people and animals. It always felt like a special place to catch your breath and make sense of life. Her friends will remember her wicked bridge playing skills, her mind always thinking ahead. Scrabble games were common and words were unearthed from the depths of the Oxford Dictionary, previously unknown to most people. Her children David, Debbie, Bonnie, Dianne and Norma will continue to find happiness in the endless memories of Mom. Her family extended to many others including Teri who opened her home and her heart to Mom creating a safe and happy haven. Bob and Bruce will continue to tell all the favourite stories of growing up under a fatherIn-law like AJ who knew just the right time and place to sharpen his axe. As their mother-in-law Sheila counselled them as to the best way to avoid that axe over many years. Both Mom and AJ together became a second family for many of our friends. All the Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren will have wonderful memories of Mom and AJ together. Mom spent her last year in her lovely cottage and we have many people to thank for helping us so she could live there in comfort. Nick and Pat, all her nurses and especially Nancy and Ramonde who were so very compassionate with all of us. Mary Ellen and her friends all were a huge source of comfort to both Mom and her family. Momâ€™s cat Laura cared for her every day never leaving her side. We are happy Mom and AJ are now together, perhaps bidding a spade or a diamond or looking out across the ocean they both loved. We know they have their arms around each other and are smiling upon us all. A memorial service will be planned in the summer for family and friends. If friends would like to honour momâ€™s memory she would love to know we have helped some of her animal friends by donating to the BCSPCA at www.spca.bc.ca.

Melvin Leroy MODIEN ~September 5, 1936 â€“ January 4, 2013

Mel Modien was my love, my partner and my best friend. I am left to mourn his loss and am so thankful I had 20 years to share his life and know this great man. Mel is survived by his wife, Carol, stepchildren Terri (Clayton) grandchildren Taylor and Connor, Curtis and grandchildren Harris and Spencer, Denise (Daniel) and grandchildren Olivia, Cooper and Presley. He is survived by his sister Maurlice (Harry) Austin of Kamloops and nieces Cindy and Karrie and nephew Hal Austin. Mel also leaves to mourn his loss his many in laws, his mother in law Helen Castle, sisters and brothers in laws, Sharon and Blair Domoney, Jim and Laurell Castle, Mike Castle, Sheila and Owen Scheck, John and Lori Castle and Chris and Jeannette Castle and their families, and many nieces and nephews. Mel will be missed by his many friends. Mel is also survived by his two children, Rick and Debbie. Mel was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan September 5, 1936 to Clarence and Anna Modien. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Duane. Mel spent the majority of his life in Dawson Creek, BC. He was in the hardware industry for a number of years, ran his own garage, and then spent 37 years as a Realtor in Kelowna and Dawson Creek, retiring in 2010. As one of his old bosses told me one time, he was one who could take a bad business situation and turn it around into something positive, looking at all the angles to solve a dilemma. Mel had a calm demeanour and was a great listener. He lived his theory that he was a lover, not a fighter. After retiring in 2010, Mel and Carol relocated in July 2011 to Parksville, BC, in order to enjoy their retirement years on Vancouver Island, to get a boat and go fishing. Unfortunately, after a very short time, Mel was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in February 2012, and had to use oxygen until he died on January 4, 2013. After his struggle with this disease and constantly being short of breath, his heart stopped. Mel died at home with his wife and his faithful and loving dog Charlie by his side. Mel was so much more than just a man. He was a fabulous and supporting husband, stepfather and friend to all. He was well respected in the community, an avid Legion member, a long time Kiwanis member in Dawson Creek, and a great co-worker to all who worked with him. Mel loved to dance and spend time in the outdoors and spent many years boating, fishing and camping with his wife Carol and salmon fishing with his friends on Vancouver Island. His door was always open to friends, neighbours and anyone who needed a helping hand. Mel was very kind, and had a great sense of humour. To those who knew and loved himâ€Śâ€Ślet them raise a glass of beer in his honor.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. An Open House in Melâ€™s honor was held at his home in Parksville, 612 Hirst Ave, Wednesday, January 9, between 2 and 4 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor in Dawson Creek, BC in the near future.

A touring piece of curling history rolls through here next week, and fans of the roaring game will get a chance to be part of it. From Qualicum and District Curling Club president Bruce Feltham comes word that on Monday, Jan. 14 the sound of bagpipes will fill the air at the old barn in QB as it plays host to five teams from Scotland as part of the long-running Strathcona Cup. According to Feltham, the Strathcona Cup is a competition between Canada and Scotland which has been ongoing since 1909 and takes place every five years, alternating between the two countries. The Strathcona Cup as the story goes was first presented in 1909 by Sir Donald Smith, Lord Strathcona, to recognize the winner of a curling tour between Canada and Scotland. The first tour was held in 1903 when Scotland sent a group of curlers to tour Canada and the northern United States. In 1909 the Canadians mounted a return tour to Scotland and this is

when Lord Strathcona offered the trophy to commemorate the winning side. The Scots’ second tour to Canada was held in 1912. This event continues today on a five year alternate tour schedule. The Scots last toured Canada in 2003 — the 100th anniversary of the first Scottish curling tour. While play is scheduled every five years, the tours have occurred somewhat irregularly due to the two wars and other factors. Recently the Canadian touring

team has consisted of 40 curlers split into two groups which compete in northern and southern Scotland during the month of January culminating in Edinburgh. The Scottish touring team to Canada for 2013 will split their 60 curlers into separate Eastern, Central and Western Tour groups. They arrived in Canada Jan. 9 for a series of games across the country, and the tour wraps up with all the tour groups meeting in Toronto on Jan. 31 at the end of their weeks long curling tour.

The touring teams will compete generally twice daily and will be locally hosted at lunches, dinners and special events. The winner of the Strathcona Cup is determined by total points accumulated over the tour head to head. “We feel quite fortunate to be chosen to play host to these Scottish curlers in this historical event,” said Feltham. This is the first time QDCC has hosted the event in its 49 years. The Scots will bring five teams to town and four of them will face off against four Oceanside rinks. Each team plays one game and the scores go towards the tour’s total points tally. QBDCC’s master men’s team will be in the mix with the other three local teams made up of players that signed on. The curlers range in age from 50 up “They have to be retired because they’re in Canada for about a month,” Feltham explained, pointing out the Scotts will log a lot of miles during their tour of Canada and play 300-plus games. Vancouver Island Jr. Hockey League fans from up and down the Island will converge on Oceanside Place this Sunday as the hometown Save-On-Foods Generals host the 2013 VIJHL All Star Classic. “It’s certainly going that’s for sure,” Elizabeth Cudmore, Oceanside Generals’ Jr. Hockey Club secretary and board member said this week when asked how the lead up to the big annual is going. “We had our final board meeting yesterday,” she said, explaining “although we’ve done a lot of planning and prep work and booking, there’s still a lot to do. Just little things like filling in the name bars on the jersey’s; getting the program together; pulling together scouting information; getting the signage ready, stuff’s coming in fast and furious, but were looking good. Everything’s coming together, and we think we’ve got a really good showcase coming up.” Oceanside Generals selected for Team North are goal-

Following the Prospects Game at 3:30 p.m. there will be a Skills Competition with the All Stars vying for fastest skater and shoot-out honours. The All Star Classic pitting Team North against Team South gets underway at 4:30 p.m. For one General playing out his final year of junior hockey and playing in his first-ever VIJHL All Star game, Sunday will sure to be one of the highlights of his time here. “It feels really good,” the Generals’ captain said easily

The 6’5” blueliner from Olympia, Washington, is in his third season with the Generals, and confirmed “it’s nice to (be selected) in my 20 year old season,” then made the point that while “it’s nice to get recognized for personal stuff,” in the bigger picture, “as a team I think we we understand that it’s important to play well and get some momentum heading into the playoffs, and I think the coaches are giving us all the tools that we need to win games and accomplish our goals. “I love it here,” he said easily when asked about his time with the Gens. “I definitely wanted to finish off my junior career here in Oceanside. Oceanside’s Atom Icebreakers have had their share of excitement this year and the season’s not over yet. The gritty young squad of girls have entered two tournaments this season so far and won them both, most recently mining gold at the Oceanside Icebreakers Female Hockey Tournament Dec. 27-28. The Icebreakers opened the tourney with a lopsided win over Campbell River — Jenna Rodway was the player of the game. They trimmed the Victoria Ice Hawks 4-2 in game two; Breanne Powell was player of the game in that one, and Jordyn Bleaney “also had a great game,” said team coach Vince Hall. The Icebreakers faced Victoria again in the tournament final and skated to a well-earned 9-4 win. Violet MacEwen was player of the game, and the return of their spark plug Sammy Lillywhite for the final helped for the win along with great goaltending by Abby Stewart and Emersyn Hall during the tournament. Jenna Mohl helped the cause in the final with her first goal of the season. Back in October the plucky squad of nine and 10 year olds won their division at the second annual JDF Female Thanksgiving Classic. “That was a good tournament,” chuckled Hall, adding

they had to beat the host Kodiaks in a shootout in the semifinals; and then we beat Sooke in the final when Violet scored in the last 30 seconds for the win. “That was really exciting, it was great for all the girls. The season’s going great,” said Hall. “All the kids are jelling really well; between the parents and the kids it’s been a great year.” The Icebreakers are currently sitting third in their five-team VIHA female division; on the heels of both Juan de Fuca and first place Sooke. All three teams said Hall, “are good. The SeaGals came up short 4-3 Sunday against the Kerry Park Lightening in women’s hockey action. “It was a good game — they’re a good team. They’ve got some speed, but we’re persistent,” assistant captain, D-girl, and longtime SeaGal Jan Takima said after. Oceanside led 1-0 after the first period; the visitors scored three unanswered goals in the second and took a 3-1 lead into the final frame but the SeaGals showed no quit. iana Smith has won gold for her dancing before, but when she went to view the results of the worldwide, online dance competition Dance Upon a Dream with her mom last week, she was nervous. “My heart was just pounding,” said the 16-year-old former Nanoose Bay resident as her mom scrolled down the computer screen to the Seniors category. “And then the first thing that came up was (the) musical theatre (category) and I saw my picture there for my dance and I was like ‘oh my goodness, yah!’ And right underneath that was the tap (category) and I saw my picture there and I was like ‘no way!’” It was the first ever season of the online competition, created by Dancing with the Stars (Australia) judge Joshua Horner and judged by dance stars like Tyce Diorio (Emmy award winning choreographer and guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance). Smith, who recently moved to Nanaimo, said she entered her two recent dance videos into the competition for the opportunity to be seen by the 36 professional judges, and to get her name out there. Smith was selected by the judges as a top 20 finalist and then winners were determined by online votes. Smith started dancing when she was three years old and by age 12 she secured first place for her jazz performance in the Dance World Cup competition in Richmond in 2008,with a silver in the hip hop category. Recently Smith attended the Triple Threat Dance Convention in Vancouver

where her idol, tap sensation Jason Samuels Smith, awarded her with a scholarship to attend the same convention next year. “To receive that from him…I was pretty excited,” she said. Smith attends Vibe Dance Studio in Nanaimo and trains in ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, hip hop and gymnastics as well as musical theatre. She also teaches jazz, tap and hip hop to young students at the school once a week, and choreographs dance routines. Although she loves all styles of dance, Smith said tap would have to be her favourite, as she likes the freedom and creativity it allows. “With tap shoes it’s such a simple thing: a piece of metal on your toe and on your heel, but there’s so many different ways to hit your foot to make a different sound,” she said. Besides dancing, Smith sings in Dover Bay’s Senior Jazz Band and performs a variety of gigs around the community. Last year she also took up guitar. Smith will be graduating a year early from Dover Bay Secondary School in June and said she plans on moving to Toronto to attend a dance school there. Although she has been accepted into a prestigious performing arts college in Los Angeles, it would be too costly, she said, even with the scholarship money she has received to date. For her win in Dance Upon a Dream, Smith received some merchandise, two pairs of dance shoes and a $1,000 scholarship towards a dance summer school in LA. An eclectic mix of photography, including South African wildlife and the Berlin Wall, as well as digital art and fine prints are part of an exhibition at McMillan Arts Centre (the MAC) this month. The work is by photographer and artist David E. Blackmore, who moved to Qualicum Beach from Ottawa in 2010 following a career with the Medical Council of Canada. Blackmore said he used to do a lot of photography, about 35 years ago, but then other things took priority. He got back into it thanks to encouragement from his wife and it began to snowball he said. â€œFor the last 15 years Iâ€™ve taken on the idea of becoming an artist,â€? he said, â€œitâ€™s sort of a retirement project gone wild.â€? Blackmore used to teach oil painting in Ottawa and has experimented with a number of art mediums over the years. The show in Parksville includes reproductions of his watercolour work, oil paintings, acrylics and even some fractal art, created by use of mathematics. Blackmore created both small and large high quality

prints for those who want to purchase art at a reasonable price, he said. Locals may recognize Blackmoreâ€™s work from previous exhibitions he took part in at The Old School House Arts Centre. Photographs he captured there of the Mid Island Floral Art Clubâ€™s Christmas wreaths, were recently published in a New Zealand magazine. Blackmore will be giving a talk about his work at the MACâ€™s Artist Reception on Friday, Jan. 11 from 7 â€” 9 p.m. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Live background music will be playing and refreshments will be available. The exhibition this month at the MAC also features the work from the Seniors Outreach Art Program (SOAP). The work honours the Art Centreâ€™s 100th anniversary (marked this year) and features work inspired by art from the last 100 years. Seniors created pieces based on work by artists who broke traditional methods of painting like American Impressionist Mary Cassatt and Dutch Neo-Plasticist, Piet Mondrian. Two distinct styles coming to Errington Local musician opening for master Brazilian guitarist at show this weekend LISSA ALEXANDER

A talented local musician and inventor of the StrumCane will be opening for award-winning Brazilian guitarist Celso Machado at the Errington Hall this Saturday. Locals may have seen 24-year-old guitarist Desiree Ferrero busking in the area, or playing local fairs and markets in the summer. She plays her own distinctive style of “slap harmonics” where she plays her guitar "like a piano" with both fingers on the fret board at the same time. She’ll open the show at the Errington Hall with some original tunes, she may sing, and depending on time, perform a couple of covers. Machado is based in Gibsons, B.C. and was crowned World Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2008. He has also been nominated for four

Juno awards among many other achievements. He is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, and his music has Brazilian, European, African and Portuguese influences, among other world music inspirations. Machado will be interviewed during the McMillan Art Centre’s (The MAC) Musically Speaking series on Jan 12 at 2 p.m. and then will play at the Errington Hall following Ferrero at 8 p.m. Get tickets to Musically Speaking at the door of the MAC for $10, $5 for students. Richard Gilman may live the quiet life of an elderly retiree in Qualicum Beach now, but there was a time when his life was anything but serene. Back then, he patrolled the skies over Great Britain at the controls of a Spitfire fighter, looking for the German Luftwaffe. When he found them, he would roll in to attack. “We were mere schoolboys,” Gilman said. “In retrospect, with a mere nine months of training, I would have to say our two greatest enemies were inexperience and weather. Our chief aim was usually to survive.” Quite apart from defending Great Britain from the ravages of aerial bombardment, that simple goal of survival proved too much for many of the young men who were sent to stop the highly experienced German Luftwaffe pilots and many of them never made it through to the end of hostilities. Despite the very real danger, Gilman remembers the time fond-

ly in his recently released book, Angels Ten! Memoirs of a WWII Spitfire Pilot. “It was a great thrill to fly, to go solo, to achieve one’s wings — to be allotted a brand new Spitfire. The eight machine guns on my 350 mph aircraft could deliver 160 bullets every second.” The slim wartime memoir gives a vivid and candid glimpse of the hazards of training, which involved increasingly huge losses in men and machines. Descriptions by aircrews, reflect the sheer terror of endeavouring to return in one piece — despite cloud, fog, darkness, cold and equipment failure. “Nevertheless,” he said, “we were immensely fortunate to be nestled behind a superb 1150 horsepower ROlls-Royce Merlin engine.” The title, Angels Ten, was the typical code used for fighter squadrons when they assembled at 10,000 feet over their base after being scrambled. What is MLS?

The Multiple Listing Service® is a cooperative marketing system that maximizes exposure of properties for sale. It is a central registry of properties used by REALTORS® to match buyers with properties for sale. Most homes sold in Canada are sold via the MLS® systems operated by real estate boards across the country. The MLS® system includes a sophisticated computer database of properties indexed by price, location, type of home, number of bedrooms, amenities and so forth. The VIREB MLS® maintains information on between 4800-7000 active listings of property for sale on the Island, and typically receives 77 new listings every day. Listings range from undeveloped lots to business opportunities or special properties. Listings are updated throughout the day.

Why does it work? The strength of the MLS® system rests in the quality and accuracy of the information. Government, economists, financial institutions, appraisers and others all rely on MLS® data. This is because REALTORS® who submit the listing information, and MLS® staff at real estate boards who conduct quality control, are trained and educated in the complexities of real estate. REALTORS® know how to describe a property accurately and what information must be disclosed in an MLS® listing. For instance, if there is a restriction on the use of a property, something called an easement, this information must appear in the MLS® listing. Also, the MLS® connects buyers and sellers. If the MLS® system did not exist, sellers would have to choose an individual real estate brokerage to list their home and only that brokerage would have the information about it and the ability to show and sell it. If the MLS® system did not exist, buyers would have to go from REALTOR® to REALTOR® to view the listings of each individual brokerage. Many alternate systems and services exist to buy and sell homes and they all compete for customers. The MLS® is the REALTOR® option.
