Property values see slight decrease from 2012

Property owners in the Creston Valley and East Shore shouldn’t be in for much of a surprise when they open their 2013 assessment notices this week.

“Assessments in the Kootenay Lake

area have decreased modestly from the 2012 assessment roll,” said Dennis Hickson, deputy assessor for BC Assessment, from his office in Nelson.

“For example, a typical single family home in Creston that was valued at $277,000 for the 2012 assessment roll is valued at $267,000 for the 2013 assessment

Property values From page 1 The Town of Creston’s total assessment roll value dropped by about two per cent from 2012 values, moving from $708 million to $694 million. The total value of rural property around Creston and Kaslo, including the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, dropped from $2.2 billion to $2.1 billion. Property assessments are calculated to reflect the market value as reflected in sales.

Property owners who have concerns about their assessments have the opportunity to request further information and to challenge the values.

“Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2012, or see incorrect information on their notice should contact our office as indicated on their notice as soon as possible in January,” Hickson said. “If a property owner is still concerned about the assessment after speaking to one of our appraisers, they may submit a notice of complaint (appeal) by Jan. 31, for an independent review by a property assessment review panel.”

The property assessment review panels, independent of BC Assessment, are appointed annually by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, and meet between February 1 and March 15 to hear formal complaints.

The Nelson/Trail BC Assessment office is located at 502 Victoria Street in Nelson. During January, office hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Property owners can contact BC Assessment at 1-866-valueBC (1-866-8258322) or at www.bcassessment.ca, which also offers more information about the 2013 Assessment Roll, including lists of 2013’s top most valuable residential properties across the province.

Wellness team adds new members

In the year since Joanne Gailius and Michelle Mayer joined forces on the top floor of Family Practice medical clinic, they have moved steadily toward their vision of creating a multi-disciplinary wellness team of professionals.

Gailius, a physiotherapist, and Mayer, a chiropractor, have worked to offer a full suite of services to their patients, adding a measure of convenience to a holistic approach to health and well-being.

While each practitioner operates a separate business (the office carries the business names of the founders — Core Chiropractic Creston and Joanne Gailius Physiotherapy), they work under a single umbrella that is co-ordinated by office manager Autumn Yesh, who brings with her years of experience at the tourist information centre. (“We’re nominating her for sainthood,” Gailius laughed.)

“Michelle and I talk a lot about excellence,” Gailius said. “Each of the disciplines in this group is like a tool in a carpentry belt. Our focus is on having highly ethical, highly skilled co-practitioners.”

Gailius, with many years of experience as a physiotherapist, has now completed four years of training that allow her to focus on pelvic physiotherapy — incontinence in both sexes, chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction and pelvic organ prolapses — pre- and postnatal patients included.

“It is so brilliant to see people get better so quickly,” she said.

Mayer, who provides ongoing chiropractic care for all ages, specializes in prescription orthotics, as well. And this spring she will begin certification in upper cervical, or neck, work through the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA).

“It’s very exciting,” she said. “Currently people are going to Calgary, Lethbridge or Kelowna for this treatment. Soon we can offer it locally.”

“Norm (Eisler) just walked into our office about six months ago,” Gailius smiles. “He has been a great addition to our team.”

Eisler, a registered massage therapist, provides deep tissue massage, craniosacral therapy, muscle energy technique and therapeutic exercise. He brings 10 years of experience to the job, which enables him to tailor therapy to each individual need.

“I wanted to make a move to the Kootenays,” he said. “It’s a really good fit for our family here.”

Eisler added that his philosophy is to “empower people to take care of their own health.”

Michelle Ares brings her knowledge in exercise and training to the group. She is a personal trainer who specializes in exercise therapy. Her colleagues refer clients who need to gain strength and functional movement and she adds a cardiovascular component to exercise for those who need it.

“If people are weak in certain areas, perhaps coming back from an injury, I can help,”

Yet another team member, Sangeun Riehl, is currently in her final year of the acupuncture program at the Academy of Oriental Sciences in Nelson.

A Creston resident since 2007, Riehl plans to begin her full acupuncture practice in 2014, following graduation and licensing exams.

She is very well educated, already holding a double major in political science and social studies education from Chonbuk National University in her native Korea. She looks forward to taking on a full patient load here in the Creston Valley, where her husband, Chris, grew up.

Gailius speaks warmly about the variety of medical services and specialties available locally, and of the co-operation among practitioners. Until Core Chiropractic has an additional physiotherapist and with an increased emphasis on pelvic work, she often finds herself referring patients to Creston Physioworks and More.

Unsuccessful break-in attempts reported to RCMP

Creston RCMP responded to 56 calls for service from Dec. 31-Jan. 6, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

December 31 •No entry was gained in a break-in attempt to a residence on Highway 21.

•Two people wearing balaclavas had similar success when they attempted to cut a lock and gain entry to a semitrailer on Erickson Road. They fled when an employee noticed their activity.

•An injured deer on Highway 3 in Erickson had to be dispatched.

•Police were called to an assault involving two females on Cook Street, but the victim would not co-operate in laying charges.

•Objectionable graffiti was painted on business sign located on Crawford Street.

•Called to a 36th Street residence where a young male was causing problems, police transported him to another location.

•Police received the first of a half-dozen 911 calls that could not be traced to their source.

•A male who was kicked off the Greyhound bus because he was intoxicated decided not to let New Year’s Eve pass without going to a party. He found

one and entered, uninvited.

Police were called to help deal with the unwanted guest, who had already been popped in the nose for his behavior.

January 1 •A male was arrested at his Centre Road residence after assaulting his two sons. He was arrested and released on the condition that he not return to the residence. He did so anyway and was once again arrested. He was then held in cells until a court appearance.

•Two apparently abandoned and malnourished dogs were taken from a 19th Avenue residence and placed in the care of the Pet Adoption Welfare Society.

•An intoxicated female found walking on Birch Street was arrested for her own safety and held in cells until sober.

•Police were called to a Centre Road disturbance where a 17-year-old male bit his fouryear-old brother, who had hit him with the TV remote.

•Police are investigating a possible assault involving intoxicated participants on 36th Avenue North.

•A minor two-car collision was reported on Russell Avenue in Riondel.

January 2 •A 911 call was traced to a Canyon-Lister Road residence, where the phone owner attributed the call to pocket dialing.

January 3 •An Evans Road resident reported loud screams early in the morning, but police could find no source.

•Harassing phone calls were reported at a Highway 3 residence.

•A vehicle went off Highway 21 and rolled over, sending the driver to the hospital for a checkup.

•An iPhone was lost on Dale Street.

•Upon investigation, an assault complaint from 38th Avenue was determined to be unfounded.

•A Canyon-Lister Road resident reported threats.

•A vehicle parked in a Riverview Road driveway was hit by another vehicle, which then drove off.

January 4 •When police were called to an assault complaint on Elm Street, they found the intoxicated female resident to be in contravention of court condition. She was arrested and held for a court appearance.

•An eastbound five-ton truck clipped a parked vehicle’s door when the driver opened it. The driver continued on, possibly unaware of the incident.

•Quick action by a fellow snowmobiler might have saved the life of a man who was found

pinned beneath his machine. Police say the victim wasn’t breathing when his snowmobile was pulled away, but he was resuscitated with CPR and taken to hospital, where he was reported to be in good condition.

•No injuries were reported when a vehicle went off Highway 3/95 in icy conditions.

January 5 •Police were called to residences on Cedar Street and Cory Road about child custody disputes.

•The ongoing saga of an Erickson Road neighbours’ dispute continued with one reporting that the other had thrown a rock that landed

on his vehicle’s snow-covered roof.

No damage was reported.

January 6 •About 18 people gathered at the Kingsgate border crossing to stage an Idle No More protest. The event was without incident.

•An Elsie-Holmes Road resident complained that stray dogs got into his garbage and attacked his own dogs. The resident was informed there is no dog bylaw in that area of the Regional District of Central Kootenay, limiting police options in such situations.

•A child custody dispute was reported on Birch Street.

Best singer contest starting next week

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor In about two months, the 2013 winner of Creston’s Best Singer will be named — but it will take four shows before that happens.

This time around, the contest kicks off with a youth division for ages 14 and under on Jan. 17 at the Prince Charles Theatre, with the top three moving on to compete against singers over 14 in the semifinal on Feb. 14.

As with previous contests, the first 150 audience members through the doors at those and the Jan. 31 quarterfinal will be able to vote for their favourite singers.

“It really makes the audience feel like they’re part of the show,” said producer Vern Gorham.

For the March 7 final, Gorham will bring in out-of-town judges to determine the winners, the top two of whom will go on to compete in the Kootenays’ Best Singer contest in June. The winner of that contest will receive $1,000, time in a record-

ing studio and the opportunity to sing at both the Kaslo Jazz Festival and Castlegar’s Kootenay Festival.

As with the 2011-2012 season, Gorham has been busy bringing the contest to other towns as a benefit for their schools, most recently having Nelson’s L.V. Rogers Secondary School organize the Nelson’s Best Singer audition night. Plans for a local elementary school to organize Creston’s youth division contest didn’t work out this year, but Gorham hopes to get one on board for 2014.

There is still time for singers to sign up for the youth or adult divisions, and Gorham is looking forward to having the talent perform for the audience.

“The top winners from the semifinals will move on to the finals, where they sing two songs,” said Gorham. “So it’s possible to hear your favourite singer four times.”

All of the shows start at 7 p.m.; advance tickets are available at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books.

Thunder Cats lose two, Peewees win four win one on Okanagan trip games, midgets tie

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats won one out of three games on the weekend, earning two points that kept them just ahead of last place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

They won the final game of a three-game road trip, in which they lost to the Osoyoos Coyotes and Princeton Posse before beating the Penticton Lakers 4-2.

“We played extremely well,” said head coach Josh Hepditch of Friday’s 3-2 overtime loss in Osoyoos. “We had plenty of opportunities to score.”

After a scoreless first period, Jaiden Ward and Trevor Hanna scored for the Thunder Cats in the second, with the Coyotes matching their goals in the third, sending the game into overtime, which lasted just over three minutes before Coyote Garrett Kucher scored the game winner.

“We had a bad break at the end of the game,” said Hepditch. “The puck hopped over our defenceman’s stick and they went down and took advantage of it.”

Injuries, sickness and one suspension played a role in the game’s outcome.

“We were quite short on numbers, so it was a good effort, for sure,” he said.

In Princeton the following night, the Posse scored four goals in the first period, one in the second and one in the third before Trevor LeBlanc scored the Thunder Cats’ first on a power play at 15:48. The Posse scored their seventh on a power play, followed by the Thunder Cats’ second goal, also on a power play, scored by Tyler Akeroyd.

It could have been worse, though, but goalie Zach Straza stopped 35 Princeton shots over the course of the game.

Sunday’s victory over the Penticton Lakers was an important one for the Thunder Cats — they now have 32 points, just two ahead of the Columbia Valley Rockies, who sit at the bottom of the division.

“Those were two points we really needed to get,” said Hepditch. “It was a really good character win by the guys in the lineup.”

Just 15 skaters suited up for the game, but after two Penticton goals in the first period, the Thunder Cats scored three times in the second period and once in the third, with Matti Jmaeff earning a hat trick.

“They gave everything they had left in their tank and found way to get two points for us,” said Hepditch.

This weekend, the Thunder Cats will take on the Castlegar Rebels — the second-ranked team in the Neil Murdoch Division — in Castlegar on Friday and Creston on Saturday.

“They’re a tough opponent,” said Hepditch.

“We’re going have to play an extremely good game to compete with those guys.”

This late in the season, there is more on the line than simply winning — falling behind the Rockies now could ruin the Thunder Cats’ chances for post-season action.

“That’s going be an important weekend for us,” Hepditch said. “We need to get all the points we can get to stay in the playoff picture.”

CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Creston peewee Chiefs had a busy schedule of games over the holidays.

On Dec. 23 at home, the Chiefs beat Elk Valley 7-0, with scoring shared by all.

At home on Dec. 29, the Chiefs beat Cranbrook T3 2-0, with a lucky goal by Ty Gudjonson and an empty-netter

by Matthew Hills making the difference.

On the road on Dec. 30 the Chiefs lost 3-2 to Castlegar in the battle of the Kootenays’ top teams. They played a better second half of the game, with great goaltending by James Porter Jr., which gave the locals a chance to tie or even win this game.

On Jan. 5 at home, the Chiefs beat Cranbrook T4 7-1, with scoring shared by all.

The next day, Elk Valley lost 7-0 to the Chiefs, and all players chipped in with points.

Overall the Chiefs are playing strong with many shutouts lately. They look forward to the second half of the season, and to the

two West Kootenay tournaments in the next month they will be attending. The team is right where it needs to be, but it has areas to work on and needs to sharpen up its offensive game.

••• The Creston midget Chiefs played against Cranbrook on Sunday for a 2-2 tie at the John Bucyk Arena.

The first period was scoreless with the two teams battling it out with plenty of good checks.

Creston dominated the second period with two goals from veteran Josh Samuels assisted by Nick Mottl and Keiran Simpson.

Will Caspers’ netminding was his best of the season.

A big push by Cranbrook in the third period led to a Cranbrook goal by their captain.

The Chiefs were playing hard but could not keep out another goal by the Cranbrook captain in the final five minutes. Creston took many shots at the Cranbrook netminder but ended up settling for one point.

The Chiefs will play against Cranbrook again at a Cranbrook tournament later this month.

Looking for the positive

For the entire five-and-a-half hours of Les Troyens, and the twohour drive back home from Coeur d’Alene afterwards, we were captivated and awestruck by Saturday’s dazzling opera production from the Metropolitan Opera. Later, when we were home, some reading about the production got me thinking about how much a role attitude plays in one’s enjoyment of life.

Les Troyens, with music and lyrics by Hector Berlioz, tells the story of the Trojan War and the years following. It is a production of epic proportions, with a chorus of 110 singers (the Met had to add 30 voices to its usual chorus) and many dancers complementing the cast and orchestra. Only a few opera houses and companies in the world are large enough to do the sprawling story justice.

During the behind the scenes interviews in an intermission mention was made of the lead tenor, New Orleans native Bryan Hymel, who replaced the original singer in December. Hymel was wonderful and I later went to the Internet to find out what had happened to force the Met to bring him in from Europe only a couple of days before he went on stage. It turns out that he replaced Marcello Giordani, one of the world’s great tenors after Giordani dropped out from the extremely demanding role of Aeneas, vowing never to sing it again. Twenty years ago, Placido Domingo did the same thing.

Mostly, I suppose, it’s a perceived way of getting value. “I’m paying for it and I want it to meet my expectations.” But is that really value, or is just a way of putting oneself into the story?

We take quite the opposite approach. When we make the choice to take in a musical performance, or watch a movie, or go to dinner, or travel to new environs, or visit an art show or gallery, we are also deciding that we want to Lorne Eckersley enjoy ourselves, to get an experience that adds to our lives. Care workers cheerful, professional To the Editor: Recently I had the opportunity while helping a dear friend who receives care in her home to observe the quality of home care she receives from our local care workers. These people are amazing. They are cheerful, patient, kind and professional.

Every home they go into is, of course, different. Every situation requires specific care and careful decision-making. They bustle around taking care of every detail and offering to do whatever is needed. They work hard and do it with smiles and laughter although I know the job must be at times, challenging.

Years ago, I watched the same attitude and professionalism as my mother received care in her home and later in mine. One would think that with the economy taking a downturn there would have to be a diminishment in the level of quality of care these workers provide. But not so. These individuals are taking it upon themselves to make sure their care recipients are getting smiles, love and the best of attention.

I hope the system continues to treat them with the same care they are offering to others. They certainly deserve it.

This Christmas, I saw angels.

Critique of poem based on facts To the Editor: While not wanting to rehearse the history of the First World War, in a letter of Nov. 29, John Jorgenson took issue with an article in the Nov. 8 Advance that cited John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields and historian Paul Fussell’s critique of the third stanza, where Fussell argues that it was a propaganda against a negotiated peace.

Jorgenson goes on to incriminate Fussell as a “depraved historian who never went to war nor could comprehend what life was like in muddy trenches with bullets being fired night and day.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

First, In Flanders Fields was indeed a work of propaganda, used by the Unionist party in the next Canadian federal election to encourage people to spend their last dollars on Union war bonds. It also caused riots across the country, and almost split it.

Second, the item was also a work of poetry in the tradition of late medieval and Victorian England, where the poppy was a badge of dead sol-

diers and popularized by writers as Lord Tennyson and Oscar Wilde whom McCrae had read. The poppy in these works was also a badge of homoerotic love.

Third, Fussell (who died last winter) was no ordinary historian. He was a great man whom I had the pleasure of meeting years ago, and who was a decorated war hero: He enlisted in 1943 at age 19, fought in the infantry on the fields of France, was wounded at Alsace, and decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He dedicated his life to writing about the history of warfare because he had witnessed its tragedies firsthand. Writing in the era of the Vietnam War, his view that most wars were caused by politics and ideology for the glory of leaders still holds today (we could add race and religion).

The impact of war on death — and physical and mental disability — upon the human race is a tragic fact of life, and Fussell devoted his career to exposing its causes and results.

World’s end will come at God’s time To the Editor: Welcome to 2013! Many people thought we would not make it, but I was pretty sure it would come. I have read the Holy Scriptures and it says “you will not know the day or the hour,” so I pretty much know that if someone says it’s going to end on a certain day, you can take it to the bank that it won’t happen on that day. So, like the Y2K scare and other doomsday prophets, someone somewhere is getting a great chuckle for some people’s gullible nature. But the question is still out there: When is the world going to end?

If you ask New Agers, they believe that the world is just now beginning, and we are now entering a time of enlightenment through the constellation of Aquarius; by the way, scientists agree to disagree on its existence. Many of these same people believed that we were going to be invaded by aliens from the planet Niburu, on or about Dec. 21.

Many others believed that the U.S. and British intelligence were going to wage the Third World War on this magical day. Or Christ was going to return. Or God was going to destroy us. So now, are we just gullible “sheeple”?

Is there really a bunch of elitists that run everything, through corporations and legislation? Are these same elitists in charge of money and taxes throughout the world? If so, what do they believe? Where do you fit in? Do the Georgian Guidestones exist? Does Illumicorp exist? Was Benjamin Franklin really the saint that he is made out to be? Are the end time prophecies that the Holy Scriptures talk about relevant for today? Will the end days be more like Nazi Germany, where only those with the right colour of skin and right attitude make the cut?

Or are the New Agers right — have we entered a new beginning? Or are the Holy Prophecies correct — will we need to submit to the one and only God, creator of the heavens and the Earth? Time will eventually tell the story, although be aware of what we are putting our faith in. We are not anonymous.

Québécois leader lacks credibility To the Editor: I am writing this letter to express my displeasure with the young people of Quebec. I was appalled to witness the desecration of our national flag. I find it does not take a great amount of brain to do this idiotic thing, trampling our national flag. I would venture to say that not all of “La belle province” of Quebec’s citizens act as stupid as the few discontent renegades who show their lack of mental capability.

I saw the writing on the wall when they chose to elect a party known to be separatist. That female, Pauline Marois, lacks credibility to be the head of her party.

Take a look at the news — it has already begun. They have legislated to abolish the use of English in business advertising and so on. They have chosen that route; why don’t we do the same and have English spoken in Parliament?

I seem to recall on my many trips to Quebec, especially the Montreal industrial district, manufacturers, breweries, bottling and clothing was advertised in two languages. In my estimation, it will only lead to a big chaotic mass, resulting in hurting our fragile economy.

Let’s go back away, when René Lévesque was premier of Quebec. We prevailed in defeating the separatists then. If the issue ever comes up again, I assure you we have enough levelheaded voters to win.

Children’s fashions are the focus at Kidtastic

A

fter planning for two years, Rachel Vlachos was more than ready to open Kidtastic Children’s Clothing Company last month — but the idea still took some getting used to.

“I just had to work up the courage to leave the job I was doing for 15 years,” said Vlachos.

After all, it was a big change. She had previously sold car parts for 10 years at Cranbrook’s Canadian Tire followed by five at Creston’s Lordco, after moving to the Creston Valley with Story and her husband and son, photo by now six, over five years ago.

Brian But wanting to be her Lawrence own boss, and knowing that there was very little children’s clothing available in town, Vlachos took the plunge, and opened Kidtastic at 1025B Canyon St. on Dec. 1 after the Santa Claus Parade. At one point, about 40 people were in the store while she was figuring out her new sales computer.

She and her husband discovered Creston while driving through on the way to Victoria. While their Cranbrook farm was still frosty and the temperature was not yet high enough for irrigation, Creston’s cows were munching on what seemed like waist-high grass. So they didn’t hesitate to move to Creston — a move that eventually resulted in Kidtastic.

Vlachos offers clothing for boys and girls of all ages, some of it new and some secondhand by consignment.

For the new products, popular brands such as Krickets, Mexx, Point Zero and Columbia Sportswear are available, along with footwear by Bogs, Converse and DC. At the beginning, Vlachos offered tutus, which sold out in two weeks, and last week received a new shipment of another popular item, winter gloves that have a sleeve to keep them on and from getting full of snow.

The consignment items allow Vlachos to offer an even wider selection, and she’s been getting them by the bagful, some pieces with the original tags still attached. Consignors receive 50 per cent of each item’s selling price, which helps to encourage used clothing to be brought

in, although Vlachos won’t take just anything — customers won’t find stains, broken zippers, tears or anything of the sort on the used selections.

Beyond clothing, Vlachos carries teething necklaces made of hazelwood, and she plans to bring in organic shampoos and creams, as well as maternity and nursing clothing. She’s even been asked about cloth diapers.

“People want to go that all-natural organic route,” she said.

Kidtastic has only been open for six weeks, but Vlachos has been impressed with the number of customers she’s seen—and they’re more than just moms.

“I’ve had parents and grandparents — aunts and uncles, even — coming in,” she said. “They’ll buy a consignment shirt and a brand-new pair of

pants. By the time they’re wrapped up, you can’t even tell they’re not all new. I love helping people pick out stuff for their grandkids.”

And kids should like what they get, considering the latest fashions hang on the racks.

“They wear fun, funky colours and stripes,” she said. “It’s fun to pick out unique stuff.”

On Nov. 19, members of the Creston RCMP detachment were presented with long-term service pins and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals in a ceremony at St. Eugene Mission.

Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie, who has also received a Queen’s Jubilee Medal, was a guest at the ceremony, which

saw medals go to Staff. Sgt. Bob Gollan, Cpl. Monty Taylor and office manager Chris Harland.

Gollan, Cpl. Kim Bloy and Const. Irvin Miller received 30-year RCMP service pins, and Cpl. Charlotte Joa received a 20-year service pin.

The former Creston detachment commander, Staff Sgt. Gord Stewart, mediated the ceremony.

CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY A single cancer diagnosis affects so many people. When it is a child that receives the diagnosis, a parent’s world changes forever, as Creston’s Lecara Davidson learned, when her daughter, Chloe, was diagnosed with leukemia at two year old.

“On the day that she was diagnosed, life became very complicated,” said Davidson. “Trying to explain to a two-year-old why she had to get poked again, why she had to stay very still for treatments and why she couldn’t eat when she woke up in the morning became my new life, my new challenge. At the beginning, holding Chloe down and still for various treatments was a must. I remember thinking to myself while she screamed in my arms, This is for her benefit, for her survival.”

Caring for Chloe took a great deal of patience.

“There was a lot of steroid rage, tired crankiness and sickness, in which I had to take a deep breath and remember she didn’t understand what she was going through and why she wasn’t feeling well,” said Davidson. “I took each day as it came. Living day-to-day was the only way my life would not overwhelm me. I dealt with challenges as they arose and hoped that one day this would all be a memory, a chapter in my life that would change me hopefully for the better,

making me more understanding and sympathetic.”

As treatment went on, Chloe got used to all the pokes and prods.

“I still felt sorry for her that she had to go through this at such a young age but I also became proud of her — proud that she had adapted to her new life as a patient, proud that she was a great patient,” said Davidson. “There were almost no more tears. She had become a brave girl that would stay strong no matter what the circumstance.

“My past three years have been stressful, and difficult. As each day passes I begin to worry less and look forward to the future.”

Part of Davidson’s future is hope. The Canadian Cancer Society gives hope in the community, by: •influencing change through its advocacy efforts to create healthier environments and help individuals reduce their risk of cancer; •empowering Canadians with reliable up-to-date information through the Cancer Information Service (CIS) at 1-888-939-3333; •speaking up on issues that affect Canadians with cancer; and •providing a range of practical and emotional support programs to people living with cancer, including family members and caregivers.

Mountain ash offers winter colour

A short walk through the arboretum this week revealed some spectacular winter interest on the mountain ash trees.

Religion versus the Bible

Ask an average churchgoer what the Bible is. The most probable answer? The word of God. Except for very few denominations, they will also claim Bible as the final authority. Almost all will say either you

As for me, the Bible is the book of explanation — how it started, what went wrong and how it will end, plus where and how fallen humanity (myself included) fit in.

Jealousy can lead to resentment

From page 8 Working with slogan 57 is not a recommendation to stop noticing that some people have more than we do — more money, more power, more ability, more friends, more realization, more intelligence, more creativity and more teachings. The list of things we can envy is endless. The idea of this slogan is to keep the clarity of that observation, without letting it tailspin us into fits of jealousy and envy.

Jealousy can be a real cop-out. It offers a good excuse not to accept the conditions of our life as we find them in the present moment. While painful, jealousy is entertaining: We can brood about how much easier it would all be if we had the life that other people have. But, in the end, jealousy can deflate the deep inner confidence that develops through practice. If we revel in comparing our lives to all those lucky ones who have more than we do, a truly abundant situation can seem to be poverty-stricken and hopeless. Jealousy feeds self-absorption and makes us feel a big ball of resentment and petty-mindedness.

There is a beautiful simplicity and stubbornness to Zen practice. Although it takes place in a kind of jungle of lurking resentments and swirling emotional upheavals and distractions, in practice we can see that jungle for what it is, accept it, and even go so far as to appreciate it. What’s great is that we do not have to wait for a better alternative, but we can go right ahead with a practice that enacts and lives out an enlightened mind. You can relate matter-of-factly to an emotion like jealousy, and stop seeing it as a mistake, threat or embarrassment.

It may come and go, but it no longer captures you.

Today’s practice: Think of someone you know who you are jealous or envious of, and take a look at all the characteristics that spark that feeling. Now think of qualities or circumstance you have that might make someone else envious. There is no end to jealousy once it takes hold. Notice how it feels to be captured by jealousy and how it feels when you are able to drop it before it grows.

Bruce Reynold Phelps

August 28, 1946 ~ December 9, 2012

Bruce Reynold Phelps passed away after a sudden ailment on December 9, 2012 at the age of 66 years.

Bruce was born to parents Lily and Paul Phelps on August 28, 1946 in Rossland, BC. On October 7, 1967, Bruce married the love of his life, Louise Wilson in Creston, BC and after having three beautiful sons, Darryl, Corey and Brandon, their family was complete.

Bruce had worked numerous jobs including: Wynndel Box and Lumber, Department of Highways, IMASCO and Columbia Brewery for seven years before he and Louise decided they wanted to become entrepreneurs.

Their Àrst business was ´3 Sunsµ trucking company then Bruce’s OilÀeld Sales and Services, Phelps Transport, Bracoda Environmental and currently Northern Waste Disposal.

Bruce was an active member in whatever community he happened to be in. He was a part of Creston Kinsmen, Kamloops Fire Department, Red Deer and Red Earth Creek Boys and Girls Club, Red Earth Creek Fire Department, Red Earth Creek School Board, Northern Care, World Vision (sponsoring three children) and also a member of Lion and Lamb Ministries.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Lily and Paul Phelps; infant brother Brian; father-in-law Jens Wilson and his close uncle Chester Phelps.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 45 years, Louise of Red Earth Creek, AB; son Darryl (Amy) Phelps of Red Earth Creek, AB with grandchildren Gabrielle, William, Zachariah, Noah and Rosealynn; son Corey (Jill) Phelps of Wynndel, BC with grandchildren Malcolm and Ryan; son Brandon (Sheila) Phelps of Grande Prairie, AB with grandchildren Cecily and Olivia; like sons Lee (Lynn) Potter of Red Deer, AB and Todd Ainsworth and Kaitlin of Edmonton, AB; brother Allan (Delores) Phelps of Chemainus, BC; sisters Shirley (Clifford) Parisloff of Yorkton, SK, Lila (Stuart) Moore of Canyon, BC and Linda (Tony McCurdy) Braden of Wembly, AB. Nina Louise Nesbitt (nee Phipps) December 27, 2012 Nina Louise Nesbitt (nee Phipps), of Creston, BC, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012 in the Creston Valley Hospital at the age of 81 years.

Nina was born to parents Harry and Martha Phipps in Burdett, $B. The youngest of ÀYe children, the Phipps came by horse and wagons to Creston when Nina was two years of age. Nina was a long time employee of the Creston Valley Co-op and later went to work at the Packing Shed when Co-op closed.

Nina was predeceased by parents Harry and Martha Phipps; sister Vi Starks; and brother Ray Phipps.

She will be remembered by her three children, Barbara Bailey of Fort St. James, BC, Bruce (Deb) Nesbitt of Stoney Plain, $B, and Mary Jane Jackman of FruitYale, BC; two sisters Marble Gray and Lois Price of Creston, BC; eight grandchildren; twelYe great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Graveside Service was held on Monday, December 31, 2012 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC. Judith Margaret (Judy) Stevenson (nee Sirianni) September 3, 1941 ~ December 30, 2012 Judith Margaret (Judy) Stevenson (nee Sirianni) passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on December 30, 2012 in the Creston Valley at the age of 71 years.

Judy was born to parents Edna and Dan Sirianni on September 3, 1941 in Vancouver, BC. Judy was an avid and very talented quilter. She was a part of the Quilts 4 Kids, Quilting Guild and Beehive Unlimited Group. She was also on the Ducks Unlimited Committee.

Judy was predeceased by her parents Edna and Dan Sirianni; sister Joan Trocz and brother Gerry Sirianni.

She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of forty-nine years, Les; sons Kevin (Judy) and their daughter Keely; Darren (Josie) and their children Lucas, Melissa and step-son Stephen; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service was held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Canyon Community Hall with Canon Randy :ood ofÀciating.

Gustav (Gus) Miller passed away suddenly at his residence on December 23, 2012 at the age of 82 years, following a lengthy illness.

Gus was born to Augusta and Gustaf Miller on August 6, 1930 at Mellowdale, Alberta, where he received his formal education.

Gus and Anna moved to Creston in 1966 from northern British Columbia. He worked for 45 years in the garage business, the last being the building of Rainbow Equipment, selling International farm equipment.

He enjoyed family and friends, holidaying in Arizona with family and growing a large vegetable garden.

Gus will be sadly missed by his wife Anna; son Russell (Leeane) of Creston; daughter Laurel, and granddaughters Dawn and Erin Miller.

The Funeral Service was held on Friday December 28, 2012 at 2:00 pm at New Life Christian Church with Pastor Gordon Lawrence ofÀciating.

Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC. Friends wishing to make a memorial tribute may do so to Creston Valley Hospice, 1720 Birch St., Creston, BC, V0B 1G5.

Raymond Brost November 3, 1928 ~ December 22, 2012 Raymond Brost passed away on December 22, 2012 in Creston, BC at the age of 84 years.

Ray was born to parents Elsie and Emanuel Brost on November 3, 1928 in Richmound, SK. Ray married the love of his love, Helen Scott, in Canyon, BC on June 22, 1949 and they started their family together, something that he always held dear.

Ray was Helen’s rock – a constant source of support throughout their marriage, an incredible and loving father and an inspiration to his grandchildren… he never ceased to amaze them. Any time spent with Ray was very precious to his family and friends alike, creating many positive memories.

Ray was very proud to have served in the Armed Forces division of the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (R.C.E.M.E.) for ten years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 29 in Creston, BC. Some of Ray's hobbies included spending time with his beloved family, tending to his garden – where he grew the best tomatoes in town – and spending time outside with his wife, Helen, and their precious little dog, Tia. He always had open arms to welcome a friend or family member into their home.

Ray was predeceased by his parents Elsie and Emanuel Brost and brothers Elroy, Tony, Wayne and Vernon Brost.

He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Helen; children Larry (Carol) Brost, Su (Lyn) Klimack, Lori (Bill) Cameron and Clayton Brost; grandchildren Anita Borkowski, Colin Brost, Danielle Cameron; great-grandchildren Mordachai, Haley and Riley; and sister Lorraine (Bob).

There will be no service by request.

Nitehawks blockade Smokies bus

The relationship between the Trail Smoke Eaters and the Beaver Valley Nitehawks has historically been a little rocky, but it may have hit its final obstacle on the weekend.

An impromptu Nitehawk blockade of the Smokies bus as it tried to leave the Cominco Arena Saturday morning has both sides seething.

Nitehawks coach and general manager Terry Jones met with Smokies coach Bill Birks at the Cominco Arena early Saturday morning regarding the release of forward Ryan Edwards.

The 19-year-old Trail native was issued a 30-day suspension effective Dec. 6, as per league rules, for leaving the Smoke Eaters, and Jones was hoping to have him in the lineup for Saturday and Sunday games in Beaver Valley.

The bone of contention arises from the exact date the suspension ended.

Jones believes that 30 days ended at midnight on Jan. 4 — by virtue of December having 31 days — while Birks insists it was midnight on Jan. 5.

“Let’s look at what the real issue is here before we address the fact that the Smoke Eaters are trying to deflect from the main issue,” said Jones. “The issue is suspending kids for not wanting to play for the Smoke Eaters. Ryan served his 30-day suspension and deserved to be able to play on Saturday and Sunday.

For spite they refused to simply push a button on a computer and made this suspension go for two games longer.”

A heated conversation led to Jones and some of his players protesting what

they perceived as a delay in Edwards’ release by standing in front of the Smoke Eaters bus as it attempted to leave the Cominco parking lot.

“They were unhappy with the suspension to the Edwards boy,” said Smoke Eater president Tom Gawryletz.

“And we had told him he was going to be suspended for a minimum of 30 days which is our league guidelines, and that date was up midnight on Saturday, and they wanted him to play Saturday night and we said no.”

A matter of 24 hours has become the tipping point, but the dissension between the teams has built steadily over the years.

The Edwards debacle may be the final straw that breaks the back of any future relationship between the two teams.

“In our league we have a coaching committee that recommended to the board of directors that we institute a suspension for any boy that leaves the team or refuses to report in a trade, and unfortunately Ryan wasn’t the first boy ... It’s just unfortunate that he was a local boy,” said Gawryletz. “It’s not a personal thing on our part; we’re just following the rules.”

The Smokies were particularly concerned about the danger to the Nitehawks players who stood in front of the bus as it went to pull away, however, Jones says there was no danger to his players whatsoever, and wondered what the bus was doing pulling away with people in front of it.

The Smoke Eater board sent letters of complaint to BC Hockey, the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, the president of the Nitehawks and the BCHL in response to the action.

“To jeopardize kids lives like that is total stupidity, I don’t care who you are,” Gawryletz added.

The suspension issued the 19-yearold Edwards seemed severe to many, particularly the Nitehawks coach, who had encouraged Edwards to play for the Smokies this season, but does not blame the player for having a change of heart.

“Why suspend a kid if he is not wanting to play?” asks Jones. “If he wants to try to get to another team in the BCHL then that is a different story, but ... if these players want to move down a league why should they be suspended?”

Despite his actions in the heat of the moment, Jones is unapologetic for the protest.

“For us it’s a statement of unity, that we weren’t happy with the way Ryan was treated by the BC Hockey League,” said Jones. “The rules about the suspension are foggy and unclear. I asked for clarification and (BCHL commissioner) John Grisdale was very difficult to talk to, would not give great details as to what happens and goes on. ... I went through as much red tape as possible and to me it was very clear the 30 days was up on Friday, Jan. 4.”

Birks issued Edwards’ release Sunday morning at 10:03 a.m. Edwards was to be processed Monday, leaving him free to join the Nitehawks for the upcoming weekend.

“We were just following the rules, and maybe we should have been a little more lenient because he was a local kid,” said Gawryletz. “But I’m telling you when you’ve lost as many kids as we have and the frustrating part is the way they walk out. They think they run the league, they can go wherever they want.”

“Having a shared space for literacy has really strengthened the bridges between people who provide services for adults in the community,” says Exley.

Programs that run out of the Learning Place, located in the lower level of Nelson City Hall, include adult one-to-one tutoring, ESL classes, Mother Goose program, cyber seniors basic computer classes, Books Everywhere, library literacy workshops, literacy drop-in times and much more.

“Someone may come into the Learning Place and easily connect with the college or employment skills. Someone may go into KCDS (Kootenay Career Development Society) to address employment issues and end up at the Learning Place getting help with their literacy skills,” she says.

The space has been created through community partnerships with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Selkirk College, Nelson Public Library, KCDS and the City of Nelson.

“The community partnerships and people’s willingness to take on literacy as an important part of creating a healthy and strong community is what really shines here,” says Exley. “It is about coming together to make things happen.”

BC Ideas awarded a total of more than $270,000 to the top social innovations, as part of a province-wide effort. Innovations addressed a variety of issues, including homelessness, literacy, skill development, health, and community inclusion for people with disabilities. These investments will help the entrants

further develop or implement their efforts to build healthier, stronger BC communities.

“BC Ideas offers an effective way for government to engage individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations and others to collaborate in making BC communities stronger,” says Gordon Hogg, parliamentary secretary for non-profit partnerships to the minister of social development.

“With the success of this competition, British Columbia is leading the way in identifying, showcasing and supporting social innovations.”

Exley is proud as the Learning Place was selected as one of four winners in the community literacy category.

“This is a wonderful recognition of the power of coming together to create something impactful in a community,” she says. “Our application shared the idea that we are stronger together than we are alone and that is truly what we are creating in our Learning Place.”

Exley says the funds will go toward furthering the existing project that uses available community space and relatively few resources.

This serves as a good example to other communities that big isn’t always better.

“I am told that what we have created is unique, simple and powerful,” she says.

BC Ideas was launched in May with input and support from 25 community-based partners, including businesses, not-for-profit organizations, universities and government.

In total, BC Ideas attracted 466 entries from 82 communities.

Singer-songwriter Daniel Huscroft playing at Snoring Sasquatch Behind the unpolished exterior of Daniel Huscroft’s bushy beard and dusty boots lies a masterful musician who cut his teeth on a piano, and picked up his first violin when he was five.

He was schooled in Vivaldi concertos and oldtime fiddle; by 12 years old, he had travelled the continent, competing nationally and performing alongside his musician father and sisters in the Huscroft Family Band — and he plays Jan. 10 at the Snoring Sasquatch.

In 2000, Huscroft began playing guitar with U.S. recording artist Sarah Kelly, and went on to write for her first two major albums, Take Me Away and Between the Lines, both of which garnished Grammy nominations and further awards. During this period, Huscroft played and recorded with many of his heroes, including Slash, Gary Novac, Nick Lashley and Mike Clink (Guns N’ Roses).

In 2003, Huscroft returned to Canada and put together his own band in Calgary, Alta. Strada was a wildly popular indie rock band booked by Feldman, sharing tours with Switchfoot and Stabilo Tea Party, and winning numerous battles of the bands.

In 2006, Huscroft began experimenting with an acoustic approach to his instrumental work, replacing the pick with his fingers. In Vancouver, he connected with singer/songwriters Ryan McAllister (Dakona, Maverick Records) and Barnaby McRae and recorded the Cowboys and Indians album. His presence on the West Coast was quickly recognized, and led to session work on dozens of independent projects, including Canadian Idol, Miss Wisconsin’s album and with producer Daniel Mendez (Dashboard Confessional, Duran Duran).

In the spring of 2010, Huscroft released his first solo album, Here Is Just For Now. Funded in part by a grant from the Canadian Council for the Arts, and co-produced by Mendez, the record is a stark departure from the electric guitar-driven rock and pop of his past. Recorded live with a finger style acoustic guitar and full string section, the album abounds with what he calls “Kootenay moments” — tracks inspired by the generations of Huscrofts who made their home and their lifeblood in the southern British Columbia, Canada hills and valleys. The result is a sense of haunting mountain solitude with unexpectedly sweet song and gruff soulful vocals that transition to serene falsetto and back again.

Even with the growing success of Here Is Just For Now, Huscroft continues to choose experience over security, and honesty over production.

And out of that seeming disarray he’ll continue to produce perfectly orchestrated forest songs and mountain masterpieces.

Tickets for Huscroft’s show are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Quality Used Books & Black Bear Books, and $13 at the door, which open at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.
