Playground funding hits first phase

otary is set to swing into action on Phase 1 of the West Shore Parks and Recreation’s Rotary Picnic Playground with the first funding goal reached.

“We’re now able to proceed with the construction of the playground and get the first half of the equipment in,” said Bobbi Neal, community development co-ordinator.

“If we continue to be successful in our fundraising, the hope is to have Phase 2 done by September.”

Over $134,000 has been raised so far, in cash and in-kind donations, from a variety of sources.

Phase 1 of the playground will include the high tower slide-o-rama and the Xscape 2.0 modern monkey bar.

Surveying is expected to start

in the spring with installation predicted to be complete by September 2013.

A $6,000 donation from sporting goods retailer Forzani Group, provided the final piece of the puzzle. Peninsula Co-op also donated $11,500 for the “butterfly net” a piece of equipment slated for Phase 2 that will now be installed in Phase 1.

The total cost for the entire proj-

ect is estimated at $244,000.

The full playground will also include a large preschool play structure, double disc swings, seesaws and other features. The playground will feature a range of accessible components for children with disabilities.

New online network connects natural users Kyle Wells News staff

A new online networking website is connecting producers, consumers and researchers of small-scale natural resources.

The Centre for Livelihoods and Ecology at Royal Roads University launched the Rural Opportunities Network in October, in partnership with a number of other agencies from across the country.

Tim Brigham, project co-manager and coordinator for education and sector support for the centre, said the project’s focus is to provide information for and create awareness of small businesses focused on natural resources, on a variety of scales.

“This could be anything from non-timber forest product-based industries … right through to people doing small scale saw milling and even growing niche crops,” Brigham said. “Basically we’re trying to serve what we

Organizers ask that interested former students and staff get in touch to help with the centennial birthday, planned for May 10 and 11.

People are also invited to attend the celebration. Already, former students from as far as Winnipeg and northern B.C. are confirmed to attend.

Marilyn Sjostrom attended the school in 1954 and is one of the principal organizers of the celebration.

“It’s a wonderful community type thing,” Sjostrom said. “It’s all about the community and when you get into the history of the whole school it is very neat.”

The school opened in 1912, with the first school year running from 1912 to 1913.

Originally a one-room building, the school has gone through many changes in its history.

In 2004 a fire destroyed the building that had been in use since the mid-1960s. A new

The Banquet winter concert offers a feast of choral songs, chants and wassails from medieval and Renaissance Europe, enhanced by flavours from India, Flanders, Argentina, Nigeria, Germany and Canadian First Nations.

A highlight will be an intricate 12-part piece, Festum Carmen, composed by director Elizabeth MacIsaac specifically for the concert.

Although it’s early days Brigham said quite a few businesses have signed up for the free service. The project reflects the mandate of the university to have practical, applicable projects, said Brigham. RRU hosts the website.

The network is national and bilingual to help include people and businesses in Quebec.

The crew at RRU took the project through research, development and working with a web designer to bring the idea to life. Advisors from across the country helped with the development of the idea, including small busi-

ness owners.

Eric Whitehead owns Untamed Feast, a wild mushroom supplier based out of Crofton, and Wild Trader, an online classified platform for wild products. Whitehead helped with the network as an advisor and now uses it for business.

Whitehead said the new network will give greater opportunities for people in remote locations to develop natural resource based businesses and allow them to not have to move to a commercial centre to survive.

“The whole concept, which is pretty exciting, empowers people,” Whitehead said. “Just from seeing that there are all these opportunities and all these links to all these micro and small enterprises. …They can see some opportunity and they might choose to stay and better their community.”

Langford fire crews free trapped woman Charla Huber News staff

Trapped in a crumpled car, a 70-year-old woman was freed by 14 Langford firefighters.

She was travelling north on Sooke Road, Jan. 2 and ended up 4.5 metres down an embankment upside-down in water. “The roof was crumpled and the doors had buckled,� said Capt. Chris Aubrey of Langford Fire Rescue.

B.C. Ambulance arrived on scene first and found the woman had undone her seat belt, but was left kneeling in water inside the car. “She was relatively uninjured but she was very cold,� Aubrey explained.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extricate the woman.

Firefighter Jennifer Zado, who is also a nurse, stayed by the woman’s side while firefighters cut her out of the car. “She

explained what we were doing.

It’s loud and it’s scary when you are in the car,� said Aubrey.

Firefighters faced challenges with water and location of the vehicle. Two ladders were laid out over the ditch to act as a bridge for the crews. “Most of our guys have never seen this type of situation before,� said Aubrey. “This was the worst case of worst case scenarios as far as access goes.�

Second rock slide slows traffic in Goldstream “The tree root digs its way into a crack in the rock. The water gets in the crack and it freezes and it breaks off. Like an ice cube.”

T

he sky wasn’t falling but rocks did on the Trans Canada Highway near Goldstream park.

Around 1 a.m. on Jan. 5 a small amount of rocks fell onto the highway about 250 metres south of Goldstream bridge, said Renee Mounteney, with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

This is the second rock slide in the vicinity in the past Charla Huber couple weeks.

Reporting “It’s in the same general area,” Mounteney said adding the area has been assessed and stabilized.

Both rock slides were attributed to a “freeze and thaw” process and a tap root from a tree.

They’ve ordered signs for the area warning motorists of falling rock. The ministry also plans to monitor the site. The area has been added to the ministry’s rock scale program with work expected to begin in the spring.

The union representing some 650 B.C. Transit employees plans to shut down Greater Victoria’s public transportation network Jan. 22 unless the company returns to the bargaining table.

Ben Williams, president of Canadian Auto Workers local 333, said it’s the only way management will get the message.

“We’re hopeful that we can get a negotiated settlement without withdrawal,” he said.

The B.C. government is rolling out its new high-tech medical services cards starting Feb. 15, in an effort to phase out millions of CareCards in the hands of non-residents.

The new cards will be combined with the B.C. driver's licence, with a similar "BC Services Card" available to those who don't drive. Residents will be required to re-enrol to renew the card every five years, whether they drive or not.

Qualified residents can enrol in the Medical Services Plan at any provincial office that issues

driver's licences. There is no fee for the health services card only. The current $75 fee for a five-year driver's licence renewal will apply to the new combined cards, discounted to $17 for seniors.

There is no requirement to get the new card until your driver's licence needs to be renewed.

The government's plan is to change over all eligible B.C. residents between the ages of 19 and 74 to the new cards over the next five years.

To be eligible for MSP coverage, you must be a citizen or approved permanent resident of Canada, living in B.C. at least six months of the year. Dependents

must also be residents to be eligible for coverage.

The ministry announced the new card program in May 2011, after a review showed there were up to 9.1 million B.C. CareCards in circulation. The total population of B.C. is 4.5 million.

Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said the new card is designed to comply with B.C.'s information and privacy law, which restricts how personal data can be used and shared.

That means ICBC and police have no access to medical files, and hospitals and medical offices have no access to driving records. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Central Saanich Mayor Alastair Bryson says he looks forward to working with the Capital Regional District as the new chair.

“I’m really looking forward to working with this group of directors,” said Bryson.

“It’s a really interesting interface at the CRD level.”

Bryson said he values the regional district coming together to consider issues like deer overpopulation and resident Canada geese.

“As a board member or as chairman you’re there to represent your council, of course, but you’re also there to consider things on a deeper level as to how they will affect the region as a whole.”

When extreme weather hits the Capital Region, Jen Book springs into action.

As regional co-ordinator for the Greater Victoria Extreme Weather Protocol, she oversees efforts to help Victoria’s homeless population access additional shelter on winter nights when they would otherwise spend battling cold and wet conditions outdoors.

“Any snowflake in the forecast and we’re activated,” Book says.

The protocol is triggered before and during weather events including sub-zero temperatures, extreme wind or rain and snowfalls.

While November and December tend to be the coldest months on average in the region, the number of times the strategy is activated fluctuates. Their figures show a high of 82 one winter and a low of 25 in another.

This season has been relatively mild so far, with just eight activations between Dec. 3 and Jan. 3. That’s not unusual, says Book, recalling that last year’s first set of activations happened in January.

“If we get hit with lots of cold temperatures, lots of rain, lots of wind or anything else, then we’re looking at more activations, and if we have a mild winter, it’s the opposite.”

When the protocol is in effect, 105 additional beds become available at Our Place Society, Salvation Army’s Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in Saanich.

265 seasonal beds currently available on a nightly basis in the city, totalling 370 beds during extreme weather conditions.

This winter the program, which generally runs from the beginning of November until the end of March, also provides 40 beds nightly at St. John the Divine Anglican Church. The church, which formerly opened as an emergency shelter during protocol activations, accommodates men and women plus pets.

Available shelters in outlying regions of Greater Victoria continue to be a need.

“We’ve been trying to branch out and get into other municipalities, but at this point we haven’t been able to secure any locations for that,” Book says. “We have had circumstances where we’ve gone in and gotten almost everything done, and then found something isn’t going to work (and) had to pull out (of the arrangement).”

Until those shelters can be developed, every effort is made to bring in people from

outlying areas. Bus fare is provided for those coming from Langford, Sooke and Sidney.

The protocol also provides a night-time shuttle service to help transport those in need of shelter. The shuttle runs daily from 9 p.m. to midnight, picking people up from stops such as Our Place, The Salvation Army or Rock Bay Landing and bringing them to designated shelters.

“It’s quite a flexible program where we tend to just react and respond where people are at, as best we can,” Book says.

The program is in need of warm winter clothing, such as coats, sweaters, toques and mittens.

Those higher pressures can cause optic nerve damage, which in turn may lead to vision loss. Most types of glaucoma do not have any dramatic or painful symptoms, but develop slowly and subtly over a period of time. Since peripheral vision is generally affected first, most patients never suspect they even have a problem. For that reason glaucoma is called “the sneak-thief of sight.”

Although the most common type of glaucoma cannot be cured, if detected and controlled early, vision can be preserved. Early diagnosis is of paramount importance as the damage to sight can not be reversed, but its progress can be halted.

Who is at risk for developing glaucoma? Risk factors include: • Family history of glaucoma • Being over the age of forty • Elevated intraocular pressure • Diabetes • High myopia (nearsighted) • Being of African descent • Smoking (another good reason to quit) Your optometrist will routinely check your eye pressure, examine the optic nerve at the point where it enters the eye and assess other risk factors. The optic nerve changes in appearance as glaucoma damages the nerve fibers. Visual field testing can be arranged by your optometrist to check the sensitivity of both your central and peripheral vision.

If your optometrist suspects that you have glaucoma, you will be referred to an opthalmologist. If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment will be initiated.

Medication to decrease fluid production or increase drainage is often used to reduce intra-ocular pressure.

Compliance to the medication schedule is essential for the preservation of vision.

The best way to prevent damage from glaucoma is never to let it progress. You should have your eyes examined regularly to avoid this preventable loss of vision.

The Vining Street block party, held in September, collected more than $20,000 through a garage sale, silent auction and business donations.

Organizers are donating $5,000 to Victoria’s Community Micro Lending, a nonprofit society that aims to build the local economy, reduce local poverty and foster sustainable business.

“We chose the CML loan fund as our 2012 initiative because it gives back directly to the community, while maintaining our commitment to local youth,” said co-ordinator Laurie Rubin.

Releasing a snakehead fish into B.C. waters could cost you up to $250,000.

The B.C. government has amended its controlled alien species regulation to impose steep fines for releasing invasive fish such as the snakehead, a Chinese import with a voracious appetite and the ability to wiggle across land to get to new waterways.

A snakehead fish discovered in a pond in Burnaby Central Park in June forced environment ministry biologists to pump the lake level down so it could be captured. The toothy beasts were being imported and sold alive in Asian specialty food stores.

The new regulations also aim to stop the spread of zebra or quagga mussels that can attach themselves to boats and equipment and infest lakes. Failure to remove those mussels, alive or dead, can trigger a fine of up to $100,000.

“The impact of the snakehead and zebra mussel in other jurisdictions has been devastating to those local ecosystems,” Environment Minister Terry Lake said, announcing the latest changes.

The regulations also prohibit possession and breeding of identified high-risk aquatic species.

They expand the reach of legislation passed in 2009 that restricted ownership and breeding of tigers, snakes, crocodiles and a long list of other exotic animals. Added to the list are species of

monitor lizard that grow to more than two metres long or otherwise represent a threat to public safety.

B.C.’s restrictions for private zoos were passed after a woman was killed by a Bengal tiger kept in a cage at an exotic animal attraction on a farm near 100 Mile House in 2007.

The new regulations add definitions for “accredited zoo or aquarium” as well as schools and research facilities that are permitted to possess exotic animals for study purposes.

The regulation requires owners of controlled species to apply for permits. Conservation officers have authority to seize animals that are considered an immediate threat to health and safety of people.

Public input includes people The key to public hearings is obviously public input.

With the Enbridge hearings in Victoria shutting out residents interested in attending the proceedings and Victoria MLA Murray Rankin being refused entry, the government is not leaving us with the impression that public interest is welcome.

The process of registering to speak is tried and true. However, relegating the great unwashed to a hotel kilometres away from where the hearings are taking place, and leaving them to be viewed in a video feed from fixed cameras is not open, transparent information gathering.

We all want the sessions to run smoothly without interruptions from noisy protesters.

Ugly disruptions create an oppressive atmosphere, rather than one of courtesy and respect, which enables everyone to voice their opinion without feeling threatened.

However, posting uniformed police outside the hearing room and forcing the public to view the hearings from a distance of more than two kilometres only alienates the people who it is trying to engage.

Talks held across the country have been uneventful. The most threatening event so far has been a large community gathering which formed a welcoming committee of sorts for the panel at the Bella Bella hearings. That situation delayed the process by one day.

The Enbridge pipeline proposal is controversial. For some, registering their name in advance, standing in front of a panel of strangers, explaining their concerns or expressing their approval is comfortable and acceptable. For others, voicing their concerns in an old-fashioned, free-spirited way with placards and songs is the way they want to express themselves. And for some of us, being able to see and hear the presentations for ourselves is how we become involved.

Seperating the people from the process is not the way to earn trust and make sure the public interest is served.

By introducing you to Indigenous approaches to art, you will discover the transformative power of creativity through traditional Indigenous art forms. Masks, drums, button blankets and storytelling are all traditional forms for Indigenous cultures; ďŹ nd out how these are still relevant today.

This versatile course transfers into every BC university and college as an equivalent to ďŹ rst year university English. It is a required course within many of Camosun’s diploma programs, such as Business Admin., Criminal Justice, Environmental Technology, Nursing, Sport Management, and more.

This course examines some basic concepts in political science. Using examples from various countries, it introduces students to the nature of politics, government, the state, constitutions, international politics, political economy, human rights, and the process of democracy.

It also examines dierent perspectives for understanding and evaluating the political world.

This psychology course will help you discover how children grow and develop physically, socially, intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically from infancy to middle childhood. There will be an emphasis on a child’s needs at any given age and stage, with a discussion on how these needs can best be met.

This course introduces students to philosophy through an exploration of love and sex, by examining the history of concepts and ideals of love; evaluating ethics around issues such as abortion, adultery, pedophilia, and birth control; exploring biological versus environmental causes of sexual orientation; and investigating the value of monogamy.

That is why the Distributed Learning model works so well for so many people and why it is now one of the fastest-growing forms of education in the province of British Columbia. Distributed Learning offers an engaging learning environment with access to our incredible WestShore teaching staff. The majorityy of our courses are offered on-line in computer-based environments; however, we also have paper-based courses if that suits your learning preference.

Advanced Placement On-line Are you planning to go to College or University? WestShore Learning Centre offers Grade 8 to 12 academic courses, leading to a BC Graduation certificate, through our school, Juan de Fuca Distributed Learning.

Grade 8-9, On-line provides a more flexible learning environment and the opportunity for self paced learning.

Grade 10-12, Secondary school students may supplement their regular school schedule with additional courses through on-line or use this environment to begin Advanced Placement classes.

The Adult Program provides a number of choices, from on-line courses to teacher-led seminars. These programs provide you with flexible learning options to complete graduation requirements or just for your personal interest.

Medical Terminology

This very intensive course will help you develop a solid knowledge of medical terms. Develop a basic understanding of body systems, anatomy, and medical disorders.

This course is a fundamental prerequisite for many positions in the medical field. Expect extensive homework. This course is recognized by Camosun College for entry into certain healthcare programs and is the required prerequisite for VIHA and the Medical Transcription Program.

Tuesdays & Fridays 6:00 – 8:30 pm Jan. 29 – Apr. 23 May 7 – Jul 26 Program Fee: $450 Text: $100, The Language of Medicine, 9th Ed. Prerequisite: English 12 or equivalent

Medical Transcription The focus of the Medical Transcription Program is the use of digital technology to receive and transcribe medical reports, emphasizing a functional and comprehensive review of English usage and Medical Terminology.

Learners will practice editing and proofreading techniques while building word processing skills and increasing their typing speed.

The program combines traditional in-class training with a hands-on training experience (practicum) at a medical facility, or on-line organization. The Program consists of 115 instructional hours and 40 practicum hours.

Program Fee: $1870

Medical Office Assistant Procedures

Registration fee: $50 (non–refundable)

Learn office procedures, medical records, communications, how to assist physicians and the importance of confidentiality.

Digital Medical Transcription

Medical Office Assistant

Discuss the importance of patient record confidentiality, the legal relationships between physicians and patients. Using computers and medical transcription equipment, you will learn how to transcribe medical reports, dictating practices, as well as efficient use of medical references and professional ethics are emphasized and practiced throughout.

Medical Transcription Practicum:

Materials: $380, (includes books, CD’s & WAV pedal, USB headphones)

A skilled Medical Office Assistant is an invaluable asset to any medical office, able to work smoothly and efficiently with medical professionals and patients while performing a range of office duties.

If you enjoy working with people in a dynamic environment, this program will provide you with the skills to get started in this exciting career.

Designed for adult students who already have prior computer and typing skills, this program consists of four core topics which total 80 hours, Basic Medical Terminology for Information Session MOA’s, Medical Medical Transcription and Medical Office Assistant Office Assistant Tuesday, January 15, 2013, Procedures, 6:00 – 7:00 pm Computerized 102-814 Goldstream Avenue Medical Billing and Medical Keyboarding. the instructor to find a suitable Basic Medical Terminology placement for a minimum of 40 for MOA’s hours of practical work experience.

This course introduces you to basic Program Prerequisites: medical terms you may encounter Applicants must fulfill the following in a medical office or clinic. This course is offered as a prerequisite prerequisites for acceptance into for Medical Office Assistant the program: Procedures but does not fulfill • English 12 or equivalent entry outcomes into VIHA and most • Medical Terminology (proof of college programs.

Keyboarding speed and accuracy is a portion of this medical program and vital to an MOA. This very intensive course will help you develop a solid knowledge of medical terms. Develop a basic understanding of body systems, anatomy, and medical disorders.

This course is a fundamental prerequisite for many positions in the medical field. Expect extensive homework. This course is recognized by Camosun College for entry into certain healthcare programs and is the required prerequisite for VIHA and the Medical Transcription Program.

Medical Transcription The focus of the Medical Transcription Program is the use of digital technology to receive and transcribe medical reports, emphasizing a functional and comprehensive review of English usage and Medical Terminology.

Learners will practice editing and proofreading techniques while building word processing skills and increasing their typing speed.

The program combines traditional in-class training with a hands-on training experience (practicum) at a medical facility, or on-line organization. The Program consists of 115 instructional hours and 40 practicum hours.

Through my work as a teacher and administrator I have had a wonderful career working with the students and their families in our district.

By introducing you to Indigenous approaches to art, you will discover the transformative power of creativity through traditional Indigenous art forms. Masks, drums, button blankets and storytelling are all traditional forms for Indigenous cultures; ďŹ nd out how these are still relevant today.

This versatile course transfers into every BC university and college as an equivalent to ďŹ rst year university English. It is a required course within many of Camosun’s diploma programs, such as Business Admin., Criminal Justice, Environmental Technology, Nursing, Sport Management, and more.

This course examines some basic concepts in political science. Using examples from various countries, it introduces students to the nature of politics, government, the state, constitutions, international politics, political economy, human rights, and the process of democracy.

It also examines dierent perspectives for understanding and evaluating the political world.

This psychology course will help you discover how children grow and develop physically, socially, intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically from infancy to middle childhood. There will be an emphasis on a child’s needs at any given age and stage, with a discussion on how these needs can best be met.

This course introduces students to philosophy through an exploration of love and sex, by examining the history of concepts and ideals of love; evaluating ethics around issues such as abortion, adultery, pedophilia, and birth control; exploring biological versus environmental causes of sexual orientation; and investigating the value of monogamy.

Advanced Placement On-line Are you planning to go to College or University? Why not try Advanced Placement (AP) courses on-line so that you can gain University credits for free, and at the same time, you can help pave your way to your post secondary learning? We currently offer AP English 12, AP French 12 and AP Calculus 12 as Distributed Learning courses.

These courses are designed to prepare you to be successful on the Advanced Placement 12 examinations, which are written in May of each year. Highlands holds musical coffeehouse A pair of area musicians promise a night of extraordinary song at Caleb Pike House this weekend.

Victoria’s Colleen Eccleston and Highlands’ Karel Roessingh will perform at the Highlands venue Jan. 12.

A rock and folk singer and rhythm guitarist, Eccleston’s original songs reflect the deep and interesting world she sees around her.

She has performed and recorded extensively as a solo artist as well as fronted a rock band, been an environmentalist and peace activist, earned a degree in acting and is

Grizz capture Cowichan The Juan de Fuca Grizzlies peewee A team is celebrating it’s win at the Cowichan Valley Winter Classic Tournament.

Working its way through the round robin, JDF defeated the Kerry Park Islanders 8-0, tied Comox Valley Cheifs 2-2 and lost to the Cowichan Valley Capitals 12-2.

The JDF team limped into semi-finals with the loss of one of their assistant captains to a buckle fracture in the last round robin game, and another player out sick. The team then faced the first place Nanaimo Clippers,

and won 6-4. The win earned the team a spot in the finals against Cowichan Valley. The team lost another assistant captain, but this time to a game misconduct.

In the final, the teams played back and forth and ended the first period scoreless.

Halfway through the second, a shot from the point by the JDF defenseman Tory McClintick, found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The game was physical and intense. With the depleted JDF bench many parents were wondering how long the team could

keep the Capitals from scoring.

JDF goaltender Brady Thompson, later selected as the game MVP, continued his stellar play and blocked every shot that came his way.

With just over two minutes to go in the game, JDF forward Brendan Martin broke free on a breakaway and buried the puck in the top corner, giving JDF a two-goal cushion late in the game.

Hellbound? Christian filmmaker challenges concept of hell Natalie North News staff

Christianity and death metal are no match made in heaven.

When Christian metalheads grow up subscribing to a religion built on the concept of hell as punishment and delighting in a musical culture where hell is revered as freedom from religion, more than a few questions are bound to arise.

Filmmaker Kevin Miller brought the debate over hell’s existence and his own beliefs on the doctrine, as both a devout Christian and a certified metalhead to the screen in Hellbound?

“I’ve struggled my whole life to reconcile the idea of a God who loves us with the notion of eternity in hell,” said the Abbotsford-based filmmaker and contributor to The Huffington Post. “Punishment should be designed to teach and to restore and the way hell is popularly conceived is that it’s basically pure retribution. I really struggle with that and I think a lot of other people do.”

Theologians, academics, authors and the lead singer of costumed metal band Gwar weighed in on what Miller calls a nuanced look at Christianity, different from the fundamentalist opinions often given the most attention in mainstream media.

“It’s asking some new questions and opening the debate,” Miller said. “In Christianity, certain beliefs are beyond questioning. A lot of Christians tend to mistake their inter-

pretation of the Bible for the Bible itself, so if you question their interpretation, it’s the same thing as questioning God and that becomes highly offensive to them.”

Miller, whose writing credits include the documentaries Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed with Ben Stein; Sex+Money, spOILed and With God On Our Side, shot the film in 12 cities across the United States, Canada

and Denmark, including at the Copenhell heavy metal convention in Copenhagen in 2011. The interviews he collected during his directorial debut led him to challenge his own beliefs.

“This isn’t just an abstract theological discussion because what we believe about hell is a reflection of what we believe God to be. And we all tend to become like the God we believe in,” he said. “If the God we believe in is ultimately violent, it’s not going to be surprising when we become an ultimately violent people. If you believe that’s what God’s going to do in the end: separate the good people from the bad people, well, we’re going to start doing that on earth.

There are definitely real-world ramifications.”

It’s an age-old tale, told time and time again.

Four historical interpreters in a northern gold rush town form a comedy troupe and reunite eight years later at Victoria’s Intrepid Theatre Club.

Christina Patterson and David Radford of Launch Pad Productions were two of those performers working the streets of Barkerville along with Chris Cooley and Stewart Cawood when the seeds of their latest project Watch for Bones were first planted. “We spent the days basically interpreting history for tourists and we needed to blow off steam in other creative outlets,� said Patterson, a regular performer on Sin City, and woman behind Tara Firm and the Lunar War Chronicles, which she produced through Launch Pad with husband, Radford.

The group produced a cabaret in the historic Cariboo town in 2005 and have since stayed in touch, despite a cross-country move to Toronto and back to Victoria via Vancouver for Patterson and Radford. Eventually Cooley

Grizz grab former Royal Kade Pilton joins Grizz Travis Paterson News staff

Four and a half months later, defenceman Kade Pilton is back on the Island.

The 6-foot-5, 18-year-old from Parksville made his B.C. Hockey League debut with the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday, picking up an assist in the Grizz’ 5-1 drubbing of the Nanaimo Clippers. On Sunday, Pilton opened the scoring against the Powell River Kings with a shorthanded breakaway goal on a 5-3 penaly kill in the first period, sparking a 4-2 Grizz win.

It’s been a long journey in a short time since he was traded to the Regina Pats from the Victoria Royals in the Western League preseason on Sept. 13.

“After about a month in Regina I was moved up to forward in an energy role, and that worked for a bit. But eventually I decided to move on. I just wasn’t getting the minutes I had hoped,” Pilton said on Sunday.

His December return to the Island went relatively unnoticed, until Pilton’s social media status tipped off the Grizzlies and Bill Bestwick. The coach didn’t know for about nine days, but once he did he immediately contacted Grizzlies co-coach Craig Didmon, who was on the Royals coaching staff last year.

Didmon had a little help, of course, as Pilton grew up playing with fellow Parksville native and Grizzlies defenceman Jaden Schmeisser, making it a familiar fit. The two are now roommates.

“A lot of (BCHL) teams were calling me and I’m appreciative of that. I gave it a lot of thought and I’m very happy with the opportunity to come to a winning team

Naturally it’s going to be an adjustment period for the big guy. He struggled with consistency in the WHL and though he has three points in his first two games, he can’t be expected to dominate. But he is part of a deep team that is showing playoff promise, winning gritty mid-season games through talent, but also by outworking teams, as they did on Sunday afternoon at Bear Mountain Arena.

“I think (Friday and Sunday) Pilton got more ice time than he did in the last month so he’s only going to get better,” Bestwick said, “especially as he gets to know the opponents. And he’s a 1994, so he’s got two more years (in the BCHL) if he wants it.”

With a full season in the WHL, Pilton has waived his NCAA eligibility, but junior A could be the arena he needs to

flesh out his game and develop into a solid WHLer for the 2013-14 season. The Pats continue to own his rights, though they might not be that keen on him since he left. With one and a half seasons played, Pilton also has CIS bursaries waiting for him from the WHL after he’s finished with junior. He wouldn’t be the first player to drop down from the WHL and return after a stint in the BCHL, nor would he be the first player to crack the pro ranks from junior A. “I haven’t put too much thought into going back to the WHL yet, just taking it one game at a time right now. Maybe the WHL and CIS (route) is still an option, or maybe I can go pro,” he said.

One thing is for sure: Pilton’s happy being back and playing on the Island.

Mom, dad, and extended family were at the game on Sunday, and saw what they already knew – that for a tall defenceman, he has a goal scorers’ touch around the net, evidenced by his breakaway goal.

Pilton’s arrival comes just prior to the Jan. 11 trade deadline, though the coach said he’s happy with his team, but is still open to adding another player or players.

“There’s that thinking you must do something, or have to do something to improve your team, but I still believe we can get better from inside our room,” Bestwick said. “Sometimes the best trade you make is the one you turn down.”

If there is an area Bestwick is looking at upgrading it’s depth in the forward lines, possibly with some more offence.

The Grizzlies (24-9-0-3) are first in the BCHL, tied with the Penticton Vees (24-10-0-3) in points with 51, but own a better winning percentage. sports@vicnews.com

The Victoria Cougars will face the Saanich Braves on Thursday, but on Saturday, a combined 11 players from both teams will lace up the skates for the South division team at the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League All-Star Classic.

Puck drop is Thursday night between the league’s first-place Cougars (33-1-2-) and second-place Braves (25-7-2), 7 p.m. at the Archie Browning Sports Centre. The Prospects Game, Skills competition and All-Star Classic are at 1:30, 3:30 and 4:40 p.m. respectively at Oceanside Place in Parksville on Saturday.

The Cougars are coming off a three-inthree weekend in which they defeated the Westshore Wolves 9-2 and Saanich Braves 2-1 on Thursday and Friday, but lost in a shootout to the Nanaimo Buccaneers 4-3 in Nanaimo on Saturday.

Cougars coach Mark Van Helvoirt abstained from commenting about the 236 penalty minutes accrued between the Wolves (20-17-1) and Cougars on Thursday, except that he was proud how his team held its ground and kept its cool. The Cougars earned 72 penalty minutes to the Wolves’ 142, and scored five powerplay goals.

The Cougars followed it up on Friday and Saturday with a

pair of highly skilled games, barely managing to beat the Braves at Pearkes arena on Friday. It was the Braves’ first game with sniper Max Mois back in the lineup since Dec. 14.

“Both teams are still missing key parts but somewhat healthy, and I thought it was how games should be in this league. We really enjoy playing games like that,” Van Helvoirt said.

Braves keeper Tanner McGaw was the busier of the duelling goaltenders, making 31 saves on 33 shots, to Evan Roch’s 20 saves on 21 shots.

“Both stood on their head and it came down to the last couple of minutes,” Van Helvoirt said.

On Saturday, the Buccaneers became the third team this season to deny the Cougars two points, scoring twice in the third period to tie it 3-3. The Bucs won in the shootout on the strength of goalie Riley Medves, who stopped all four Cougars shooters.

“I was somewhat surprised how we reacted in such a close game,” Van Helvoirt said. “It was the last of a threein-three, so it was a good test, but it seemed that our conditioning was off in the third game.”

Tomorrow night the Braves will be looking for revenge as they meet the Cougars for the seventh of eight meetings this season.

Royals flip D-man for pick On Monday the Victoria Royals shipped defenceman Jesse Zgraggen to the Calgary Hitmen for a fourth-round selection in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. The move is in advance of Thursday’s trade deadline. The 19-year-old Zgraggen played 33 games for the Royals this year. His departure makes room for the talented core of younger defencemen, Joe Hicketts, Jack Walker, Ryan Gagnon and Kolton Dixon.

It’s all-star season for the Island’s senior soccer leagues.

On Saturday the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association hosted two all-star matches at Westhills Stadium in Langford, while the senior men’s Vancouver Island Soccer League games will play this Saturday at Hampton Turf.

A mix of premier and Div. 1 representatives played in the LIWSA AllStar game, which ended 1-1 after the regulation 90 minutes. Team White won in penalty kicks, 5-4, when Andrea Strebel of Nanaimo United clinched it.

“I was really pleased with the enthusiasm, effort and standard of play,” said director LIWSA competitions chair Randy Wachtin. “The event went off well, everybody left with smiles.”

Haley Burns of the Vic A’s scored just over a minute into the game to make it 1-0 for Team White when her shot deflected off a defender and beat Team Black goalie Olivia deGoede of Prospect Lake. Ten minutes later Kelly Forbes, also of Prospect Lake, evened the game at one from a loose scramble in front of the White goal.

The second LIWSA game featured Team Black, consisting of players from Div. 2 and 3A, winning 6-2 over Team White, made up of players from the Div. 3B and the over-30 A and B divisions.

“The crowd was pretty into it with

signs and cheers, and at one point there was a distinct yell of ‘Go Mom!’ that everyone heard, a pretty fitting moment for the day,” Wachtin said.

Team Black’s Emma Maynard of Peninsula D3A scored the first and last goals of the game. Also scoring for Black was Nicole Pugh (Cowichan), Loria Hales (Castaways FC), Sarah Bryson (Castaways Utd.) and Joleen Hook (Cordova Bay Renegades). Tracy Forsberg (Castaways United O30A) and Sadie Quintal (Castaways) scored for Team White.

Passes to Steven Nash Fitness World and athletic therapy sessions with Katie Pyne, who interned with the Highlanders FC, were among the prizes given out. Game MVPs won season tickets and a scarf from the Highlanders FC. MVP winners were Team White’s Samantha Kennedy (Vic West Premier) and to Team Black’s Kymber Gale (Saanich Fusion FC Premier) in the premier/Div. 1 game, and Team White’s Holli Kotylak (Ladysmith) and Team Black’s Nicole Pugh (Cowichan) in the Div. 2 and 3A vs. Div. 3B and over-30 A and B game.

It was the fifth annual LIWSA AllStar game and Wachtin said the goal is to have it return to Westhills Stadium as an annual affair, an event the league hopes to grow.

Faced with more than half of its yearly visitors coming from the Capital Regional District and statistics that show overall visits dropping, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is looking to the sea for inspiration.

Angus Matthews, the centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s executive director, told Sidney council that the aquarium is looking to the future, and without change in the community, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not looking all that bright. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fifty-four per cent

of our visitors in 2012 are coming from the Island,â&#x20AC;? Matthews said, noting 46 per cent of those are from the South Island. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re locked into a bit of a pattern and we need to break into the broader tourism market.â&#x20AC;?

Over the last three years, Matthews said, the centre attracted more than 360,000 people. But 2012 saw a continued trend toward declining numbers, even during peak tourist season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big concern and not necessarily sustainable,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the

reasons why the centre is supporting a plan to implement a business improvement area (BIA) in Sidneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s downtown core.

That plan, led by the Sidney Business Development Group and awaiting council approval, would collect fees from member business owners.

Those fees would be used as marketing seed money to promote Sidney to attract more shoppers and tourists to the area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Without a doubt, we would be one of the main beneficiaries of that,â&#x20AC;? Matthews said.

The centre cut its marketing budget substantially this year and plans to raise admission rates as it tries to get on an even financial footing.

In the meantime, it is developing a plan that aims to make Sidney a hub for ocean exploration at scientific and family levels. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t grow our existing facility,â&#x20AC;?

Matthews said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll grow outside.â&#x20AC;?

A concept called the Salish Sea Institute is being developed by the centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s board and staff, with plans to roll out new programs and facilities over the next 18 months.

Using the Salish Sea Marine Conservation Area and working with local First Nations, Parks Canada and other stakeholders, the idea is to offer high-end eco-adventure tourism, citizen science opportunities, research outstations and family outings to waters and beaches near Sidney. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If Tofino can sell storms, we should be able to sell beaches during the day and really good hotels at night,â&#x20AC;? Matthews said.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated the cost of starting the institute is $180,000. It would be run as a nonprofit group and be linked to the centre.

So far, $60,000 has been raised for the project, Matthews said.

It will cost an estimated $1.5 million more to build outstations, a First Nations big house and other infrastructure.

The B.C. government has agreed to a $20 million compensation deal that will see Shell Canada give up a disputed coalbed gas tenure in the remote Klappan region of northwest B.C. Shellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exploration of 4,000 square kilometres at the headwaters of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers has been opposed by the Tahltan Nation since the tenure was awarded by the province in 2004. The company drilled three exploration wells in the first year, which it now intends to decommission as it leaves the area.

The B.C. government has agreed to provide Shell $20 million in gas royalty credits to compensate for its investment in the Klappan region.

That is to be put towards a water recycling project that Shell is building to supply hydraulic fracturing operations on its shale gas developments in the Peace River region of northeast B.C. Coalbed gas extraction has additional hazards because of salt-contaminated water that often surfaces with natural gas when coal deposits are drilled. Hydraulic fracturing can be used in coalbed development, but it is more extensively used in drilling deeper shale formations to extract natural gas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Klappan is one of the most sacred and important areas for our people,â&#x20AC;? said Annita McPhee, president of the Tahltan Central Council. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a place of cultural, spiritual, historic and social importance. Our people do not want to see it developed, and we look forward to working with British Columbia on achieving that goal.â&#x20AC;?

McPhee added that the Tahltan have received offers of support from local, provincial, national and international organizations in their opposition to the development.

said the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shale gas tenures in the northeastern B.C. offer â&#x20AC;&#x153;better commercial and geological prospects,â&#x20AC;? and sustainable water use is important to that development.

Energy Minister Rich Coleman said shale deposits offer much greater gas volumes, in regions where roads and other infrastructure already exist.

Aboriginal Relations Minister Ida Chong said the government is looking forward to further â&#x20AC;&#x153;government-to-governmentâ&#x20AC;? talks with the Tahltan over resource development in their entire traditional territory.

Doug Donaldson, NDP MLA for Stikine, said protests against coalbed gas drilling in the Klappan are similar to those
