But what if it is a widespread catastrophe like Katrina, or Sandy or the wildfires in the Okanagan a few years ago, when many thousands of people had to be evacuated? “I guess we’ll just hunker down and manage as best we can until government help

There are no immediate plans for future citizenship ceremonies in Campbell River, according to the Immigrant Welcome Centre. Rachel Blaney, executive director of the Immigrant Welcome Centre, said the organization has learned that Citizenship and Immigration Canada may eliminate local citizenship ceremonies to deal with budget cuts. Blaney said she became aware of the issue through one of her clients a few weeks ago. “One of our clients was informed by mail in early December that she would write the citizenship exam at Beban Park Recreation Centre in Nanaimo,” Blaney said in a news release. “The client drove to Nanaimo and wrote the exam. Following the test, she was told that she would receive the results by mail from CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada). There was no judge or ceremony, only a promise that a citizenship ceremony will be held at a future date, probably in Vancouver.” The news comes on the heels of the federal government closing down Citizenship and Immigration offices in both Victoria and Nanaimo last May – the closest office is now in Vancouver. Mass destruction. Devastation. Homes levelled. A Campbell River emergency and disaster response volunteer thought her training would ensure no surprises, but nothing could prepare her for what she saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy which swept through the Caribbean and eastern United States last October. “I had been to Texas (after Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston in 2008) so I was prepared for the piles of garbage but Ortley Beach (New Jersey) was mass destruction. Whole neighbourhoods were gone,” said Joanne Hart, a volunteer with the Salvation Army’s disaster support team and an Emergency Disaster Service Representative with the

Strathcona Regional District’s Emergency Social Services. Hart spent two weeks (Nov.22 - Dec.6) in hurricane-ravaged New Jersey, in an area hit particularly hard known as Barrier Island. Working with a team from the Salvation Army, Hart provided emotional support to victims of the disaster in all of the little townships along the island – Ortley Beach, Lavallette, Monterey Beach, and Chadwick Island. Conditions on the island were so poor, that the entire island was closed throughout the evening and overnight hours. The bridge over to the island would open each day at 8 a.m. and by 3 p.m. every resident of Barrier Island, as well as volunteers and constructions crews, had to vacate the island in order to prevent looting.

During the day, Hart was tasked with pushing a cart through the sand covered streets, offering coffee, hot chocolate and snacks to locals desperately trying to clean out their homes. The sand, dumped inland by the high ocean tides as the hurricane made landfall, made a difficult task even harder for the homeowners. “The people I was assisting, a lot of them literally were clearing out their houses and having to take them down to their studs,” Hart said. “Ceramics and glassware could be saved but everything else had to be gutted – all the wood furniture, cloth, clothing, they had to pile it in front of their houses.” Hart said some houses were completely gone while others were still standing and appeared to be saved but in reality, the foundation had shifted and the house was slated to be taken down. Hart said one of the residents told her they had lost nearly 20 feet of the Jersey shoreline. The sand brought in was so thick that the streets had to be ploughed and local residents had to shovel the sand out just to get to their homes. Hart said the hardest part for the residents was seeing pieces of their homes taken away. “Crews would go in with heavy equipment at night (while the island was closed) and each day you

would see the garbage piles growing and growing,” Hart said. “Everyone had to drive past those mountains to get to their homes so they might see some of their furniture.” Hart said everyone living on Barrier Island was either living in a shelter or had been put up in a hotel by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) or by their insurance. Many of the evacuees were staying in the same hotel as the Salvation Army team in a nearby town, Toms River, and Hart and her team were able to offer emotional support sessions in the hallways. Hart also visited with the victims at mobile kitchens set up along the streets and at FEMA

locations, where the evacuees could go to fill out paperwork for emergency assistance. Hart said the resilience of the people who lived through the disaster was amazing. “I met lots of incredible people and I was reminded of the resiliency of people,” Hart said. Hart met one family who was planning their Fourth of July party for this year, despite losing everything except the front stoop of their home. Hart said the woman is determined to sit out on her tiny front stoop even though the rest of her home is gone. During her first week of deployment, Hart met another woman who asked if Hart could come by her home and deliver

a coffee to her husband who was working inside. The woman told Hart that her husband survived stage four rectal cancer but now has cancer in his liver and lungs and was working really hard to clean up their home. Hart said the woman’s story “rocked me to my core”. She said despite the ordeal, the couple were surrounded by their family who were cheerful and laughing and enjoying their hot chocolate. “I spent quite a while with her and then headed back,” Hart said. “Tears were streaming down my face and a lady flagged me over to get a coffee. I told her it was the wind that made my eyes water.” Hart said there

were similar “God moments” all around her team, from meeting a persevering man who had been flooded out months earlier up state from Hurricane Irene only to lose everything once again to Hurricane Sandy to offering a coffee to a woman who was so grateful she broke down and cried. Still, Hart said she feels as if she’s the one who benefited. “It seems selfish but I feel like I got more out of it by going there than the people I helped did,” Hart said. Hart will be presenting her experience to the regional district’s Emergency Social Services team on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Search and Rescue building on Larwood Road, behind the Willow Point Fire Hall.

mobilise volunteers and direct resources as needed. Volunteers in Emergency Support Services (ESS) practise to run reception centres for evacuees, track family members and provide immediate support in the way of food, clothing and lodging when necessary. In the Okanagan it was volunteers who handled all the evacuees. If you are burned out of your house in

the middle of the night you may find yourself the next day dressed in clothing supplied by ESS, shopping with a voucher for essential clothing or food and being lodged free for the next couple of days to give you time to make firm arrangements. This happens a number of times each year and for people, without family or friends nearby, ESS can be a lifesaver. Going back to the person with the cell phone, unfortunately

that time it was a large scale disaster, work crews were overwhelmed and it took some time before help could arrive from outside. The cell phone system got overloaded with the number of calls and after a few days, the backup generators for phones began to run out of fuel and crews were unable to reach the communication towers to refuel them. When help did arrive there were problems communicating with some areas so they

had to wait longer for relief. Hospitals had their own supply problems since it was not practical to keep large stocks of medical supplies in reserve. Communications and supply lines are so efficient now that we expect next-day delivery of all kinds of supplies even if something has to come hundreds of kilometres. We forget that, in our area, there are only a few roads on which we depend to bring almost everything to us.

If they are cut we must be prepared to depend on our own resources for some time. Amateur (ham) radio is a new focus of attention for emergency communications since it is the only long range system which does not depend on the infrastructure of phone towers, satellites and landlines. In the Strathcona Regional District, ham radio volunteers with the Campbell River Amateur Radio Society (CRARS) work with the

other agencies under the Strathcona Emergency Plan in which Campbell River is a partner. More radio operators are needed, both to work from home as neighbourhood contacts and to help with communications at the operation centre and reception centres in an emergency. An amateur radio licence is good for life but requires training in radio theory and operation since qualified hams have widespread privileges in

terms of the power and frequencies they may use. Morse code is no longer required. An evening course for the basic licence will start in Campbell River on Jan. 14. Search volunteers make a little go a long way O

ne of city’s least expensive budget expenditures goes a long way to making the entire North Island region a safer place. C a m p b e l l R ive r Search and Rescue (SAR) is a volunteerrun organization that relies on donations to train its members, buy and replace equipment, and to pay all the other bills. “We spend a lot of time fundraising. All SAR groups in B.C. are self-funded and receive no government funding at any level,” said search manager Grant Cromer. “We are lucky here in Campbell River, we receive approximately $9,000 a year from the city to help with expenses. “It’s a small portion of what we need to operate a year but we are very grateful for the support of mayor and council.” Last year was average for SAR in terms of calls. The group typically responds to 30-35 calls per year and, in 2012, SAR received 34 calls, the same as in 2011. “We responded to everything from missing hikers, helicopter medical evacuations,

out-of-bound snowboarders, to mutual aid calls as far away as Smithers,” said Cromer. “We had a variety of everything this year, but definitely saw a rise in hiker searches.

“Between June and September, we had seven calls for missing hikers, most were overdue, some needed assistance and had activated distress beacons.” Training is always

an important focus for SAR. In the past year, volunteer members trained for the rope, swift water, alpine and helicopter rescue teams. Six new members also came on board in 2012, two other members were certified as search managers, and a dog was added to the K9 team. “Training and equipment in the SAR world is very expensive, a

water rescue course can be $500 a person, times that buy 8-10 people a year and it adds up,” said Cromer. In addition to training and certification costs, money is always needed for vehicle insurance, cell and satellite phones, and to buy and replace equipment. “We have an amazing membership who is very dedicated to fundraising and chas-

ing down funding leads so we maintain a high standard of training and equipment,” noted Cromer. As a final note, Cromer reminds the public to play it safe during the winter especially around water with thin ice, in the alpine avalanche areas, and to let family and friends know where you are going. “Don’t venture out of bounds to ski or recre-

ate on commercial ski mountain operations,” he said. “It is very dangerous as it exposes you and the rescuer to dangerous environmental issues. “Think about your choices before you undertake an activity, remember someone has to come save you when you get in trouble and that someone probably has a family at home waiting for them to get home safely as well.”

Citizenship: Served by offices in Vancouver Continued from A1 ship and Immigration Canada said the department will provide services to Campbell River applicants through itinerant, or travelling, services. “Citiz enship and Immig ration (CIC) expects to be in Campbell River this spring,” spokesperson Philippe Couvrette said. “The frequency of our itinerant service will depend on the number of people who require ceremonies or other services. “CIC staff from Vancouver were in Campbell River in December to conduct both interviews and ceremonies.” North Island MLA Claire Trevena said the department’s office

closures and the uncertainty surrounding local ceremonies are troubling. “It’s a concern if they’ve closed those offices, if you have to go to Vancouver,” said Trevena in an e-mailed statement. “If you’re a new immigrant you don’t necessarily have a lot of money. It’s going to make it more difficult on people. It doesn’t really encourage openness.” For nearly 40 years, citizenship ceremonies have been organized locally by the Knights of Columbus. Theo Ber ns, who received his Canadian citizenship in 1973, has been involved since then but so far has not received a request from the Vancouver Citizen-

ship and Immigration office to organize another citizenship ceremony for Campbell River. The last ceremony took place in May 2012. As in past years, new Canadians in this community swore their Oath of Citizenship at the Maritime Heritage Centre, with Quadra Island serving as the backdrop. During the ceremony, the new citizens were presented with their Certificate of Canadian Citizenship. As is customary, invited guests and local dignitaries and politicians were on hand to welcome the new citizens into the Canadian family. Blaney said “the Immigrant Welcome

Centre has been trying for months to get an answer from Citizenship and Immigration Canada regarding their plan for the people of Campbell River and the Comox Valley” but to no avail. Couvrette told the Mirror that Campbell River applicants will be served by Citizenship and Immigration staff in the Vancouver office who will travel around the region. The new process is part of the department’s efforts to reduce overhead costs, and to streamline programs and operations. “The department is moving toward a system that allows for the electronic application, payment and processing of files,” Couvrette said.

Accused thieves agree to remain behind bars to await trial PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Two men charged with a commercial break-in and theft have elected trial by supreme court judge alone. Arthur Michael

Nelson, 37, and Darren Jason Puglas, 35, are both well-known to police and were arrested just before Christmas. According to RCMP, the two were trying to start a vehicle when they were nabbed by

officers. Police say the vehicle was stolen and inside were televisions stolen from a business. Nelson had just been out of jail for three days, after serving a one-year sentence for break and enter, when

he was arrested. Both men have agreed to remain behind bars until their trial. On Monday, in Campbell River provincial court, both men elected trial in B.C. Supreme Court by judge alone, without a jury.

A trial date has yet to be set. Nelson and Puglas are charged with break enter and theft, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of break-in Instruments and two counts of possession of stolen property.

Thief to follow partner’s lead for treatment PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A drug-addicted thief will get his chance to turn his life around. Elijah Wadhams, 24, wants to follow the lead of his girlfriend – the mother of his two children – and enter a residential treatment facility to deal with his addiction. As a result, the Campbell River man received an eightmonth conditional sentence, instead of jail time, after pleading guilty to four charges on Monday in provincial court. The conditional sentence will allow

Wadhams to enter a 70-day program in Abbotsford. His partner is also currently in residential treatment for addiction issues. “He’s now seen the success his girlfriend is achieving in the program…(and) he wants to get his addiction under control,” said defence lawyer Brian Dybwad. Crown prosecutor Tim Morgan agreed to the sentencing terms, which also includes one year of probation. However, Morgan said the sentence is “leap of faith” because there will be a gap between Wadhams’ release from

jail in Victoria and him actually getting to Abbotsford for treatment. Judge Brian Saunderson understood the prosecutor’s concern, “Every non-custodial sentence requires a leap of faith. That’s how it goes.” Wadhams was arrested Sept. 6, 2012, after he and another man attempted to steal $186 worth of meat from Thrifty Foods. Both men were arrested outside the store and the meat was recovered. Wadhams was charged with theft under $5,000 and then he failed to show up in court for his first

appearance on Oct. 15. His next crime occurred on Dec. 12, when he stole a woman’s credit card from a residence on Seagull Drive. Wadhams then used the credit card the next day to buy $800 worth of pre-paid American Express cards from the 7-Eleven convenience store located at Dogwood Street and 2nd Avenue. Mounties arrested Wadhams later that day. He was found in possession of the American Express cards as well as the receipt, and has been in custody since then.

At Monday’s court appearance, Wadhams appeared by video from cells in Victoria and entered guilty pleas to theft, possession of a stolen credit card, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and failing to appear in court. In addition to the eight-month conditional sentence and one year probation, Wadhams was ordered to not go to Thrifty Foods and both 7-Eleven stores in Campbell River.

Cops seek B&E suspects Police are still looking for the culprits responsible for at least a few break and enters that occurred in the south end of the city. Three of the five residential breakins occurred in the same area and are believed to be related, said Sgt. Troy Beauregard of the Campbell River RCMP. The thefts took place between Dec. 26-28, and police did not specify the exact locations of the break-ins. Stolen good included electronics, jewellry and at least one firearm. Forensic officers checked out all the break-ins and the police investigation remains ongoing.

Suspected dealer busted A 56-year-old Campbell River man is facing drug dealing charges related to an alleged dial-a-dope operation. Phong Tran, 56, was arrested Dec. 27 by RCMP. He is charged with trafficking cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Tran has made one court appearance and is due back in provincial court on Monday. He is expected to enter pleas on both charges.

Holiday check-stops Police continued to conduct check-stops for impaired driving. Over the previous week, one impaired driver was arrested, two 90-day driving prohibitions and one 24-hour prohibition for drugs were issued. Mounties also handed out “positive tickets” – coupons and gift certificates to motorists who were displaying safe driving practices.

Hands out for more It’s a new year, and that means all levels of government have their hands in our pockets a little more deeply than in 2012. The Canadian Taxpayers We say: Plenty of Federation sent out a press release outlining just how much additional room for better pocket picking is coming our way in management of 2013. The list is substantial. tax dollars The most substantial, and perhaps the most unfair, is the boost in Medical Services Plan premiums. These premiums increased $60 per family this year, and have now

risen 24 per cent ($300 per family) in three years – far more than the rate of inflation. This boost in MSP fees was first brought in by the provincial government to help deal with its deficit, and it appears this premium will keep rising until enough members of the public start to pay full attention to just how much it is costing them. The federal government doesn’t get off scot-free. As of Jan. 1, premiums for employment insurance are up, and so are contributions to the Canada Pension Plan. While contributors will get their CPP contributions

back eventually if they retire and collect CPP, the same cannot be said for EI. A small portion of the population collects it, but all working people and their employers pay for the program. In the meantime, B.C. Hydro is raising rates by almost four per cent on April 1. One thing is certain – governments have an insatiable appetite for our money. While much of the money they take goes to useful services, there is plenty of room for better management and for minimal tax increases. – Black Press

Witch hunt reflections

Re: Joyce gets her ramp (Mirror, Jan. 2/13) I respectfully suggest that the Mirror would be welladvised to fairly research the story that they seem to enjoy covering. While pursuing your “witch hunt,” let us remember there are two sides to every story. Had you properly researched the documentation, you would have noticed that on two separate occasions we offered ground floor accommodation to Joyce Stewart, including painting the new unit and installing new carpets, while continuing to keep her monthly rent payments (900 sq. feet, two bedroom at $490 per month), which is substantially lower than other tenants in the building, and significantly lower than other competitive facilities in Campbell River. These offers were made with the best intentions for Ms. Stewart. Unfortunately, one cannot just throw up a ramp as some have suggested. To do this correctly and safely, we need to first remove the front stairs of the building and a portion of the cement sidewalk, which would negate access and egress for all the tenants, for a period of approximately two weeks. So, we’ve pulled through another holiday season. Why does it always seem like such a slog? I mean, I like Christmas and New Year’s. I like everything about it: the gifts; the food; the gifts; the food. I also like socializing with friends, some you haven’t seen for a while. And, of course, that involves gifts and food. I like the sentimentality of Christmas too. I like the peace and goodwill that suddenly seems to spill out. I don’t bust society’s chops too much for being charitable, generous and caring at one time of the year while being less so the rest of the year. There are too many forces at work

trying illuminate the bad things in the world to realistically expect us all to be angels 24/7; 52/365. I give people a little more slack on that one. But somehow, the giving, the receiving, the eating, the planning, the shopping, the school Christmas concerting, the inviting, the attending, the pressure at work and, the rushing, all starts to wear on you. Next thing you know it’s New Year’s Day; you’re plum tuckered out and you’re five pounds heavier than when you went into the Christmas season. Time to go for a walk. Phew. I just find it funny that the time of year when you pack in the most goodness, is the season that leaves you the most worn out. Having fun and being

a good person takes a lot out of you. Speaking of fun...are you happy the NHL has signed a deal with its players? I have to confess that I’m looking forward to watching top level pro hockey again. Categorize me as the Happy Hypocrite. I was mad at both the NHL team owners and the players at being so inept at negotiations that it culminated in a “work” stoppage. But I doubt I ever would get so mad that I’d vow to never watch the NHL again. Many supposedly said they were but I bet you won’t see any repercussion of any kind from fans. Least of all, me. Witholding my financial support of the NHL will have zero impact

because, frankly, I don’t spend a penny on the NHL other than to buy a cable TV package that includes sports channels. I don’t own a team sweater that I paid for (I won a Leafs sweater years ago from Save-On Foods but that’s the only one I own). Tickets and sweaters are far too expensive for me to buy. If I check out a hockey game in Vancouver it will likely be a junior game. The only NHL game I’m likely to see would be in Los Angeles during a trip to Disneyland. Ticket prices down there are way more reasonable than in Vancouver. So, warm up the TV and cool the refreshments, it’s back to the couch to catch hockey.

Precedent setting Continued from A8 Plans, building permits, construction quotes are in the neighbourhood of $40,000, plus taxes and borrowing costs make this a significant investment indeed. We made what we consider as an honest business decision, given that we had put in excess of over $140,000 in building improvements since we took over ownership of the building four years ago. Frankly, with the low rents we charge, there is little left over for improvements of this nature. Most of our tenants are seniors who enjoy the community aspect we have tried to nurture. Judging from the comments being made on this situation provincially, this is precedent setting and brings into question why

Human Rights decisions supersede the BC Residential Tenancy Act and the Municipal Act. We have diligently sought infor mation and no where can we find that it is mandatory that apartment blocks are responsible for tenants’ medical requirements. We are also concerned with the Human Rights Tribunal refusing to supply us with the transcripts of the proceedings and also the fact the tribunal appointed a QC lawyer to represent the claimant at no cost to her. Frankly, we could not afford legal representation of this stature, thus we had to represent ourselves as best we could. The taxpayers might be interested to learn that the hearing was at Painter’s Lodge and covered two days. There are those who

now feel the BC Residential Tenancy Act is now rendered meaningless as a result of this precedent. T he bottom line could very well read: Thousands insist landlords to make physical adjustments to individual accommodations for health reasons. It is painfully obvious that the Human Rights Commission in B.C. claims sovereignty over other provincial or federal ministries and does not include landlords; no matter how hard they try to be good landlords. Thus, we landlords no longer have rights to make prudent business decisions. For the record, we are not allowed to speak with Ms. Stewart while our solicitor considers other options in this matter. Reinstate Quinsam’s winter steelhead run, angler asks environment minister steelhead hatchery program on the Quinsam River. “The run in the Quinsam River is so low that we would like to kick start the run by releasing fry for two complete reproductive cycles (approximately eight years) and then leave the river to revert to natural reproduction,” Craig wrote in his letter to Minister Lake. “The upper river is under-utilized by both steelhead and salmon. “We would like to enhance the upper r ive r t o i n c re a s e steelhead and salmon stocks.” Craig said Quinsam

Pot activist to visit city Dana Larsen is coming to Campbell River to promote the Sensible BC decriminalization campaign. Larsen, former candidate for the leadership of the BC NDP, is promoting the Sensible Policing Act, which would effectively decriminalize cannabis possession in the province. Larsen will be speaking in Campbell River on Monday, Jan. 21, from 7-8:30 p.m., at the downtown Community Centre. “The Sensible Policing Act directs all police in BC to stop spending any time or resources on searching, seizing or arresting anyone for simple cannabis possession,” said Larsen, who works as director of the Vancouver Medicinal Cannabis Dispensary. “The lawyers at Elections BC have confirmed that this legislation is within provincial jurisdiction and suitable for a referendum.” Larsen is leading the Sensible BC campaign to have a referendum on the Sensible Policing Act, putting volunteers in place to collect the official signatures needed from September to November of 2013. He’s been on tour to over three dozen cities and towns across BC since October last year.

“There’s no reason we cannot decriminalize possession in our province,” he said. “In 2003, BC joined seven other provinces in refusing to enforce the Long Gun Registry. “At that time, Attorneys General said they didn’t want to bother with otherwise law-abiding citizens who were in possession of an unregistered long gun. We’re asking for the same sensible perspective when it comes to people in possession of cannabis.” The recent votes to legalize cannabis in the U.S. states of Washington and Colorado has given the Sensible BC campaign a solid boost. “Across Washington, thousands of charges for simple possession are being dropped,” explained Larsen, “saving taxpayers millions of dollars while also unclogging the justice system. Yet here in BC we’re seeing possession charges skyrocket. If trends continue, 2013 will be another record-breaking year, with over 4,000 pot possession charges being laid across BC. I take my dog to the dog park but he doesn’t seem interested in playing..... is he normal?? He could be quite normal..... not all dogs actually want to play with other dogs. It’s possible he’s had a bad experience (or multiple) trying to play with other dogs, maybe even being bullied by the others. A lot of dogs don’t have the social skills to mix with unfamiliar dogs, different breeds have different play styles and he could have been “body slammed” in the past and is now Cathy Merrithew leery of other dogs. Sadly too many people that think their dogs enjoy visiting with dogs at the dog park are wrong, they’re just not skilled enough in reading their dogs body language and subject their dog to a scary encounter. A model dog park would be a huge parcel of land, fully fenced of course, and encourages the owners to walk with the dogs. Just standing around and talking at the park, while the dogs are busy getting to know one another, leaves way too many dogs vulnerable to that inspection being done by a potentially pushy dog. Owners ignore their dogs while catching up on daily events, instead they should be strolling and they’ll ﬁnd that dogs will be better together while moving in a determined direction. Another reason your dog may be uninterested is that he may be in pain. Joint and other “hidden” diseases will make your dog not want another dog to come close enough to bump him.

Our Canine friends make great companions but they often develop a bad odor. There are many reasons for your dog’s unique smell, but one area commonly overlooked is his or her Ears! You can usually recognize an ear infection by seeing redness, debris and an odor in the ear. Ear infections usually stem from over-production of wax, which occurs in response Dr. Peter Woodward to irritation. The moisture of the wax promotes bacterial and yeast growth. A yeast infection is very stinky smell which usually is the cause of your dog’s unique odor. Most ear infections are cleared up simply with professional cleaning followed by medication at home. If there is only mild debris in the ear canals, simple disinfection and washing of the ear is adequate; however, in many cases, a full ear ﬂush is needed to even examine the eardrum. If your canine friend is getting ear infections often you may want to ask your veterinarian about the possibility of an underlying condition such as allergies or a thyroid dysfunction.

Walk Jan. 27 for Duke Warren

Duke (Ieft) and Melba Warren both developed Alzheimer’s disease in their 80s. This year’s Walk for Memories is being done in honour of Duke on Jan. 27.

Get walking North Island for Duke Warren and the more than 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia. Duke and his wife, Melba, both developed Alzheimer’s disease in their 80s. Melba passed away in 2010 and Duke in 2011. They had two children, Bruce and Wendy. Duke Warren was a Spitfire pilot during World War II and continued his career in the Royal Canadian

Air Force until he retired in 1973. His last posting was to Canadian Forces Base Comox. After retirement, Duke gave himself freely as a volunteer. For example, he served on the founding Board of Directors of the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park and was involved with the Comox Museum and Archives, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron. He supported the Cadet

movement and spoke at local schools on Remembrance Day. Duke was recognized for his contributions to the community through many awards including the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. Duke would say his volunteer work would not have been possible without the support of Melba. She was a wonderful partner to him and often by his side volunteering. They spent a very happy retirement together in the

Valley. Duke Warren is the honoree at the North Island Investors Group Walk for Memories on Sunday, January 27. A tribute in memory of my dear husband,

July 24, 1943 – January 1, 2013

Surrounded by the love of his family, Don passed away peacefully in Campbell River at New Horizons Community of Care on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, after a two-year battle with brain cancer that he fought with grace and dignity right to the end. He was 69 years old. Don’s passing is mourned by his loving family, wife of 45 years, Janice (neé Beer) and their children: Deanna (Jeremy), Leah, and Gordon as well as their grand-children: Susannah, Paige and Gabriel. He is also survived by his step-mother Margaret Jesse, his sisters: Joyce Cochrane, Barbara (Hugh) Ashwell, Edith (James) Belbeck, Lois (Bryan) Balint and his brothers: Eckhardt (aka Sonny) Jesse, Robert Jesse and Norman (Lee) Jesse. He was a beloved uncle to many nephews and nieces. To some he was more like a father. Survived by family members in Campbell River: Gordon and Ronda Beck, Olga Bilesky, Lynda and Eric Snagg, Marjorie Beer, Joanne and Graham Webster and in Port Alberni: Gerry and Nicole Beer. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Eckhardt and Martha Jesse, his sister Doris Wilburn and his brothers-in-law, Amos Beck, Thomas Cochrane, William Wilburn and father-in-law, Gerald (Jerry) Beer. The Beck, Wells and Franzen families ‘adopted’ Don into their homes and hearts. He felt very honoured and blessed to be considered a part of each family. He held all of his family very near and dear to his heart. He was considered the patriarch of the Jesse family and made himself readily available to them all whatever their need. To Don there was no such thing as step-family, half-siblings, in-laws, blended family, extended family, or foster family. Don was born in Athabasca, Alberta in 1943 and the family moved to Golden, BC in 1951. He spent his late teens in and around Edson, Alberta. In March of 1966 Don packed up his chainsaw and headed for Campbell River where he found work as a Faller in the local logging industry. He and Jan were married in 1967. He continued Falling for another year and then took a Real Estate Licensing course and sold Real Estate for about a year. He didn’t like wearing a suit and a tie so he decided that he’d rather build and sell houses and wear a bright yellow hard hat and khakis instead. He built his ﬁrst house on Marina Blvd. in 1971. Jesse Homes Ltd. was formed in 1972 and he went on to become a successful builder of houses and commercial properties. Don was an active member of the Daybreak Rotary Club for over twenty years. During that time he enjoyed taking part in many community projects and activities sponsored by the club. He took the club’s motto: “Service Above Self” very seriously. He volunteered his services and resources as the project manager for the construction of The Maritime Heritage Centre. He quietly gave of himself, his expertise and his funds with no expectation of reward or recognition. The Club recognized his many contributions over the years by honouring him with “Rotarian of the Year” in 2010. A humble and private man, Don will always be remembered for his generosity, hospitality, honesty, his loyal devotion to his family and friends and his love and respect for God’s creation. He loved to hunt, ﬁsh and hike only so he could be out in the wild with the animals, nature and his buddies. His passing has left a huge void in our lives, but he will always be in our thoughts and in our hearts. Flowers gratefully declined. Please consider a donation to a charity of your choice. Sylva was born in Enid, Montana on November 30, 1915. When Sylva was very young the family moved to Reid Island and she grew up on Reid and Cortez Islands. Sylva worked as a ¿sherwoman all her life beside her husband Reg ¿shing on the west coast with their troller “UBE”. At a future date a Celebration of Life will take place at Yucalta Lodge.

Alwyn Edgar Thurlow Hodgkinson January 2, 2013 It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Alwyn Edgar Thurlow Hodgkinson(Al). Born in Victoria on February 25th, 1933, Al was adopted and raised by his parents, the late Daisy and Edgar Hodgkinson. Al is survived by his loving wife, Pat, who shared 54 fantastic special years with him. Al is also survived by his loving family, Pat Stawski (Ed), Val Chickite (Robert Taylor), Linda Hodgkinson, James Hodgkinson and Marianne Moore (James). Al was fortunate to share his life with his 8 grandchildren, Troy Chickite (Sarah), Cody Chickite, Travis Chickite, Robynn Stawski, Dakota Hodgkinson, Courtnay Stawski, Madison Werner and Tyra Moore. Owen Chickite (Troy and Sarah) is Al’s first great grandchild. Al will be remembered in the Campbell River community for his many selfless contributions. Some of Dad’s accomplishments include designing the first salt water fishing pier in Canada. He, as a draftsman, designed many homes and businesses for the Campbell River area. He originally worked at Crown Zellerback as an architect, and then moved on to becoming one of Campbell River’s city building inspectors. Al was deeply involved in “Logger Mike” going up the pole as well as designing the present Saratoga Speedway. Nineteen years ago, Al became an advocate and spearhead of the fight for Prostate Awareness. The West Coast Prostate Awareness Society was formed as he himself fought and won his battle with Prostate Cancer. This organization now assists and educates Prostate Cancer patients and their families with their personal struggles. Many people in this town will fondly remember Al walking with his dogs, with that brown cowboy hat covered in pins, sometimes, with his cane, sometimes not. He was known for stopping and having a chat with anyone who crossed his path that day. Al’s wry sense of humour allowed him to laugh at the cancer that finally claimed his life. Humour was his weapon against all. His wife Pat, her children and their families would like to thank the Palliative Care Program and especially Barb, Dr. Veerapen and all those who have stood by them as they said their farewells. A Celebration of Life for Al Hodgkinson will be held on Saturday, January 12th, 2013 at the Campbell River Community Centre from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Please join us to say goodbye to our Husband, Dad, Grandpa and friend. In lieu of flowers, donations to the West Coast Prostate Awareness Society would be greatly appreciated.

Classes have become established in Courtenay and Comox and now Axe Capoeira hopes Campbell River will prove to be another popular location. Axé Capoeira is an internationally established group with more than 20 years teaching in Canada. Instructors Alicia Fennel and Simeo Diaz have played a major role in this popularity as they provide a friendly and encouraging atmosphere for students to learn and develop skills. “It is amazing to watch the children gain confidence and skill as they practice and learn,” says Diaz. The city is also writing off $8,201.66 that itâ€™s owed from Ted Leroy Trucking, which declared bankruptcy in 2008. â€œInformation from Canada Revenue Agency states that there are outstanding payments to both CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and employees, thus there is no likelihood that payment on this debt will be forthcoming,â€? Ciarniello said. C i t y s t a f f we r e looking for council approval to write off the two accounts at T u e s d ay â€™s c o u n c i l meeting, after the Mirror went to press, in order to prepare for the cityâ€™s one-year audit. Staff were also looking for council to support an amendment to the cityâ€™s Finance Policy which would give the cityâ€™s finance manager authorization to write off accounts found to be not collectible up to $5,000. The policy would also allow the general manager of corporate services to write off uncollectible accounts that are between $5,000.01 and $10,000, while anything more than $10,000 would still have to go before council.

Tagging generates most calls to Crime Stoppers in 2012 This past year was a busy one for Campbell River Crime Stoppers. Despite not having a full time Coordinator for about six months, the numbers were up across the board. According to Crime Stoppers President Judy Shepley, â€œOur new coordinator, Pat Patterson, is doing a wonderful job of getting the word out on our website, Facebook page and Twitter. Next year should be even better.â€? Over 317 calls were taken by Crime Stoppers in 2012, resulting in 304 tips. As a direct result of these tips, 25 arrests were made, 32 charges were laid and 68 cases cleared. Over $54,000 in illegal drugs were seized and destroyed and $2,100

in stolen property was recovered. Most of the tips came from concerned citizens who were not interested in getting a cash reward, but several reward payments were made up to the amount of $500. The organizationâ€™s website (www.campbellrivercrimestoppers.com) is still very popular with residents of Campbell River. In particular, this last quarter the numbers of hits to the web pages has increased dramatically. In December alone, the Wanted Suspects page was visited over 6,000 times. The current website offers 15 pages of information. In October 2012, Facebook was introduced as a social media tool to increase the pub-

licity for Campbell River Crime Stoppers program. Since then there have been over 90 posts onto the site. As a direct result of these posts, there have been 64 tips received. There have been 18 arrests made of people appearing on Facebook on the wanted page, and a further seven people were identified who were not known to police. The numbers of visits to the Facebook page are increasing month by month and over this last quarter there have been over 28,000 views. The highest number of views for one incident being for the graffiti â€œtagging issuesâ€? at Willow Point. Twitter was also introduced in October 2012, the response has been good and the num-

They are Barbara Buchanan, Vancouver, Shelley Chrest, Port Alberni and Ray Gerow, Black Creek. Buchanan has a diverse law background in providing conduct and ethics advice to B.C. lawyers, heading up a corporate legal department, engaging in private practice including administrative tribunal, board work and teaching. She is employed by the B.C.
