CALGARY — Police expect charges will be laid against the owner of two dogs that got loose and allegedly attacked a woman in Calgary.

The woman was taken to hospital and both dogs were seized after the Wednesday night incident.

Police say they responded after reports of aggressive dogs running free in a northeast neighbourhood.

Officers arriving at the scene were forced to call for backup and animal control officers when the dogs swarmed their car.

The incident comes after a vicious attack in which three pit bulls killed a dog and injured another in a Calgary offleash park.

Ski hill enjoys packed holiday season Annalee Grant Townsman Staff

The Kimberley Alpine Resort finished off their Christmas season with a bang — literally.

To cap off the final day in the holiday season, fireworks bloomed up and over the ski hill on New Year’s Eve, finishing off a busy Christmas for staff at the resort.

Ted Funston, area manager for Kimberley Alpine Resort, said it was all about the snow. The ski hill has had nine feet of snow fall so far this year, which is two feet ahead of last year’s incredible ski season.

“These great conditions combined with strong partnerships and a lot of hard work on the part of many people and organizations in the community including Tourism Kimberley, the local accommodators, the many other tourism providers, the City of Kimberley, and our team at Kimberley Alpine Resort resulted in what we feel

was a busy and successful holiday season for the tourism industry and the community,” Funston said.

Vacationers traveled from far and wide to hit the powder, but Funston said locals revelled in the white stuff as well.

“It was great to see so many local and visiting families having fun out there,” he said.

To keep everyone busy the resort held a number of activities such as opening up the popular skating rink at the base of the hill, doing a night time glowstick run down the hill on New Year’s Eve and launching a new Kids Trail at the top of the Midnight run.

The resort also offered a historical tour of the mountain, showcasing the original mining sites. The fireworks were perhaps the most exciting event of the holidays, which was done thanks to partnerships with Tourism Kimberley, Kimberley Snowmobile Adventures, Moun-

Recent bands have included local favourites the Hollers and 60 Hertz, among others.

Is it time to rid your home of the Christmas tree and get things back to normal? Well Cranbrook’s Scout groups are here to help yet again this year.

The Scouts will be doing their annual Christmas tree pick up on January 12 this year starting at 9 a.m.

Susan Rad, group administrator for 4th Cranbrook Scouts, said trees should be placed outside by 9 a.m., and pick up is by donation.

She suggests leaving an envelope with Scouts written on it on the tree or in the mailbox.

“The kids will check

the mailbox so that’s probably the easiest,” Rad said.

Both of Cranbrook’s Scouting groups will be out touring the city and picking up trees. The donations go to running the much-loved program. Rad said all three age groups from five to 14 will be participating in the pick up.

“It usually takes us most of the day,” she said.

The Scouts have been doing the tree pick up for many years in the community to help home owners clear out the tree after the holidays.

“I think it’s a good community service

that we do,” Rad said.

The job wouldn’t get done without the generous support of parent volunteers and some local businesses that contribute vehicles and hours to the pick up. All trees are transported to the Regional District of East Kootenay Transfer Station where they are chipped.

Rad said anyone interested in getting involved with Scouts can contact Carson Damm at (250) 489-4636. The local Scouts are always looking for new recruits whether they be adults to help with programming, or kids to join.

VANCOUVER — B.C. businesses seem largely unprepared for the return to the old provincial sales tax once it takes over from the much-hated HST in April, say business groups who are hoping their members come out of the holiday season with resolve to deal with it sooner rather than later.

The B.C. government announced Wednesday businesses can now register to collect the old tax as the province switches back following the defeat of the HST in a province-wide referendum in 2011.

John Winter, president of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, said making sure the 400,000 business owners in the province are informed of the coming change has been tough.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us,’’ he said in an interview.

He said the chamber polled its members at the beginning of December and found 65 per cent of respondents were either unaware they were going to have to collect the provincial sales tax and the federal goods and services tax separately, or they were unprepared for it even though they were aware of it.

“There’s a serious concern

here, a bit of a disconnect that needs some more work,’’ Winter said, noting the chamber and the government have been working together for months.

“The message is not getting out there and that’s the big concern.’’

The government has posted its registration documents online and business owners can also print their registration to send by mail or fax, or they can deliver it in person.

The government said in a news release business outreach began in October and November to explain the timeline for the PST. Chambers of commerce and business organizations have been offered seminars covering the principals of the PST and business owners who need help can book a one-on-one consultation with a ministry tax specialist.

The government said so far, over 800 requests have been received and 160 completed.

Online seminars are also being offered and there is a tollfree number to answer questions.

The government said more than 100,000 businesses will need to register to collect the PST and about 30,000 of them

are new and have only existed under the HST. The 12 per cent harmonized sales tax took over from the provincial sales tax in July 2010 to much anger. It was a combination of the five-per-cent federal GST and B.C.’s seven-per-cent PST. But it meant services such as haircuts and gym memberships were subject to a 12 per cent tax, whereas before they had been exempt from the PST. Restaurant meals and bicycles had also been exempted from the PST. Anger over the tax helped force former premier Gordon Campbell from office and prompted a provincial referendum, which defeated the tax in 2011. The government announced it would return to the PST in April 2013 after a lengthy period of rebuilding the system to collect it.

Winter noted that although the province is returning to an old way of doing things, the renewed PST is somewhat “revamped.’’

Significant changes include allowing businesses to file their PST remittances online, filing them less frequently and filing in coincidence with the federal filing.

• In 2011, there were a total of 43,991 births in B.C., up from 43,670 in 2010; • Life expectancy in British Columbia is the highest in Canada at 82 years for 2007-11, up from 81.7 for 2006-10.

The provincial population also grew naturally by 12,215 in 2011, or at rate of 2.7 per thousand, not counting migration.

co by an American who bought it from a Moroccan meteorite dealer last year.

Researchers performed a battery of tests on the meteorite and based on its chemical signature confirmed that it was blasted to Earth from Mars. At 2.1 billion years old, it’s the second-oldest known Martian meteorite that formed from a volcanic eruption.

There’s also evidence that it was altered by water. Though the amount released during testing at high temperatures was small — 6,000 parts per million — it was still much more than other Martian meteorites. Scientists said this suggested there was interaction with water near the surface during a time when the planet was mostly dry and dusty.

More tests are under way to determine how long the rock floated in space and how long it had been sitting in the Sahara.

It will be next week, at the earliest, before a former beauty queen enters a plea in in connection with the 2011 Stanley Cup riot.

Sophie Laboissonniere was not in provincial court in Vancouver Thursday but had been expected to plead guilty.

The case was put over until Monday afternoon.

Laboissonniere’s lawyer says he had planned to enter the plea on her behalf today and her absence was not the reason for the adjournment.

LONDON — In a sea of flapping black and white flippers, Ricky is hard to miss: He’s got spiky yellow feathers, a flamboyant character, and he’s the only rockhopper among the dozens of penguins living in the London Zoo. That’s a big help for keepers embarking on their annual stock-taking of all the zoo’s residents. It’s no easy task, when there are more than 17,500 creatures to count. All animals have to be accounted for, including the tarantulas, locusts and snails.

Zoo managers started the painstaking process on Thursday, and the final tally could take weeks.

Officials hope this year will bring new partners and families to a range of animals.

An all-female family of nine otters has been waiting for a new male to arrive, and Ricky, who has been the lone rockhopper in the zoo since 2011, would also

appreciate a mate.

“Ricky’s quite a unique character — he was rejected by his parents and was handreared. He’s more interested in zoo keepers than in other penguins,’’ said zoological director David Field.

“It’s time to get him some rockhopper partners.’’

The census is required as part of the zoo’s license terms, and the data is used for zoo management and international breeding programs for endangered animals.

Most animals in the zoo have microchips in their bodies, making counting a little less daunting. Fish and animals with camouflage properties — like leaf insects — are trickier, and the tiniest ones such as ants are counted in colonies, not as individuals.

New additions to the zoo being counted for the first time included baby Ziggy, an endangered white-naped mangabey monkey, and Maxilla, a black-

and-white colobus monkey.

The zoo also welcomed a pair of new Sumatran tigers — male Jae Jae from a zoo in Ohio in the U.S. and female Melati, from Perth, Australia.

The tigers were matched by an international breeding program to ensure a genetically diverse population of animals. They will soon be properly introduced to each other and meet visitors in a newly expanded enclosure in spring.

“We breed them in the zoo because they are running out of time in the wild,’’ said Field, who’s hopeful the tigers will soon produce cubs.

The World Wildlife Fund says there are now fewer than 400 of the big cats, which are native to Indonesia.

LOS ANGELES — Scientists are abuzz about a coal-colored rock from Mars that landed in the Sahara desert: A yearlong analysis revealed it’s quite different from other Martian meteorites.

Not only is it older than most, it also contains more water. The baseball-size meteorite, estimated to be 2 billion years old, is strikingly similar to the volcanic rocks examined by the NASA rovers Spirit and Opportunity on the Martian surface.

“Here we have a piece of Mars that I can hold in my hands. That’s really exciting,’’ said Carl Agee, director of the Institute of Meteoritics and curator at the University of New Mexico who led the study published online Thursday in the journal Science.

Most space rocks that fall to Earth as meteorites come from the asteroid belt, but a number can be traced to the

moon and Mars.

Scientists believe an asteroid or some other large object struck Mars, dislodging rocks and sending them into space. Occasionally, some plummet through Earth’s atmosphere.

Short of sending a spacecraft or astronaut to the red planet to haul back rocks, Martian meteorites are the next best thing for scientists seeking to better understand how Earth’s neighbour transformed from a tropical environment to a frigid desert.

About 65 Martian rocks have been recovered on Earth, mostly in Antarctica or the Sahara. The oldest dates back 4.5 billion years to a time when Mars was warmer and wetter.

About half a dozen Martian meteorites are 1.3 billion years old and the rest are 600 million years or younger.

Good news for those worried about declining birth rates in the province.

B.C. births are on the rise according to the annual report from the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency.

The agency released its annual report this week, with all the statistics from the 2011, the year in births.

“I am proud to call British Columbia home and so are more and more people,” said Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid in a press release. “The number of births in British Columbia is growing and British Columbians also enjoy the longest life expectancy

in Canada, with life expectancy of 82 years old.”

The government press release explained that the 140th edition of the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency Annual Report contains information collected from registrations of births, deaths and marriages that happened in 2011. Information from the report is used for various aspects of health planning, research and education.

The report notes, among other things, that: • The most popular names for babies born in British Columbia in 2011 were Liam and Emma; • The most widely selected names for boys were Liam, Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Benjamin. The top five names for girls were Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Chloe.

COTR helps prevent maternal deaths in Kenya Da rryl Schmidt

College of the Rockies in collaboration with Kenya’s Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUT) has recently embarked on a 5-year maternal health project. Entitled MAISHA for ‘Maternal Access and Infant Survival for Health Advancement’, this project will work in two needy regions in Kenya with funding assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency. MAISHA responds to a Kenyan government request for DKUT to take a leadership role in national health care services.

According to the World Health Organization at least 536,000 women and two million babies worldwide die from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth every year. The statistics are even gloomier in developing countries like Kenya where the risk of death for newborns is six times greater than in Canada.

Poor access to quality obstetric care, inadequate health facilities and lack of skills among health care providers have been cited as major factors for the high fatality rate in the developing world. However, some progress has been seen for children with infant mortality rates falling by half since 2003.

College of the Rockies International Projects and Marketing Specialist Moritz Schmidt says, “The goal of MAISHA is to improve the quality of health services

and information available to rural patients and to further reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. Project funds will be used to improve emergency obstetric train-

ing for health workers and to acquire more advanced equipment for deliveries.

There will be a large community aspect to the project to address community

health workers’ knowledge gaps on infant and maternal health matters and to improve public understanding of these same issues.”

Initially, MAISHA will be

implemented in Nyeri County, about 3 hours north of Nairobi. Once the training and implementation model have been refined, Kimathi University health sciences faculty, with support from College of the Rockies, will replicate project activities in Migori County. This part of Kenya is near Lake Victoria in the western part of the country and has the highest infant mortality rate in the country. Only 23 percent of women give birth in a health facility, a number the MAISHA team hopes to increase over the coming five years.

College of the Rockies has been present in Kenya for over eight years, primarily in partnership with Kimathi University. Previously, COTR and DKUT collaborated on a five-year project which contributed to sustainable job creation and supported the curriculum and structure for a new tourism diploma program. The MAISHA project will utilize significant staff and faculty expertise, primarily in nursing and health care, but also from other College departments to support broader efforts to help mentor and develop Kimathi University as well as rural health clinics.

B.C. Transit reviewing New Fewer impaired drivers in Year’s Eve Free Rides in Trail B.C. caught during holidays Sheri Regnier Trail Times

VANCOUVER — The Mounties in B.C. say fewer drunk drivers were caught in roadblocks across the province this holiday season compared to previous years.

They say preliminary numbers from areas policed by the RCMP show 961 people were charged with impaired driving and other offences during the CounterAttack program from Dec. 2 to Jan. 2nd, compared to 1,434 in the same period last year.

Almost 350 drivers were given 90-day driving suspensions, another 272 got three-day driving bans

and 135 were given drug-related 24-hour suspensions.

Corp. Robert McDonald of RCMP Traffic Services says good media coverage of the new impaired driving laws and penalties has helped people make better choices about drinking and driving.

Although they found fewer impaired drivers, RCMP officers handed out about 3,000 other tickets during the CounterAttack program, including 1,419 drivers who were using an electronic device.

Another 213 were caught speeding and 1,364 tickets were written for seatbelt violations.

TRAIL, B.C. — The third nasty incident in three years has B.C. Transit reviewing its program of Free New Year’s Eve bus service around Trail, B.C. Meribeth Burton spokeswoman for B.C. Transit said approximately 200 drunk and rowdy youth surrounded the 1 a.m. free ride in Rossland on New Year’s Day, which prompted a call for RCMP escorts and a review of the service in general.

``In the last three years, there have been problems with intoxicated youth, on our buses (in Greater Trail),’’ she explained. ``It’s a problem and something we are taking a very hard look at.’’

According to Burton, the large group of intoxicated youth surrounded the bus and starting banging on it, accompanied by other, ``general bad behaviour.’’

Sergeant Robert Hawton of the Trail RCMP detachment said

police responded but the group had dispersed. No charges were laid.

Burton said that driver safety was addressed a few years ago, with the hiring of a private security guard for each driver on every bus. ``This year, the operator and the security detail felt they had to leave the area for safety reasons. ``However, for example, Victoria offered exactly the same service, and we had not

one complaint.’’

Approximately 400 revellers in Greater Trail boarded the New Year’s Eve ride, and 65 riders in Castlegar took advantage of the free program.

Modern energy myths of the U.S.

W

hich of the following statements is true? The United States now has a 100-year supply of natural gas, thanks to the miracle of shale gas. By 2017 it will once again be the world’s biggest oil producer. By 2035 it will be entirely “energy-independent”, and free in particular from its reliance on Middle Eastern oil.

Unless you’ve been dead for the past couple of years, you’ve been hearing lots of enthusiastic forecasts like this, but not one of them is true. They are generally accompanied by sweeping predictions about geopolitics that are equally misleading, at least insofar as they depend on assumptions about cheap and plentiful supplies of shale gas and other forms of “unconventional” oil and gas.

For example, we are assured that the United States, no longer dependent on Arab oil, will break its habit of intervening militarily in the Middle East, since what happens there will no longer matter to Washington. But this new era of cheap and plentiful energy from fossil fuels will also result, alas, in sky-high greenhouse gas emissions and runaway global warming.

These statements are also untrue, at least in the formulation given above, since they are based on quite mistaken assumptions.

The original error, on which most of the others are based, is the belief that “fracking” — hydraulic fracturing of underground formations of shale rock to release the gas trapped within them — has fundamentally transformed the energy situation of the United States. Huge amounts are being invested in the newer shale plays like the Eagle Ford formation in Texas and

the Marcellus in Pennsylvania, but the numbers just don’t add up.

Production of shale gas has soared in the U.S. (still the home to most shale plays) in the past ten years, but it is only compensating for the decline in conventional gas production in the same period. Moreover, while the operators’ calculations assume a 40year productive lifetime for Gwynne the average shale gas well, the real number is turning Dyer out to be around five to seven years.

That means that in the older shale plays they have to drill like crazy just to maintain current production — and since drilling is very expensive, they aren’t making a profit. As Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson told a private meeting four months ago: “We’re making no money. It’s all in the red.”

They are hoping to make a profit, of course, once the gas price recovers from the ridiculous level of $2 per million BTU that it fell to in 2009, when a great many people believed this really was a miracle. $4 per million BTU would do it for most operators, and even the highest-cost ones would be making a profit at $7. But it’s clear that shale gas is no miracle that will provide ultra-cheap fossil fuel for the next 100 years.

In that case, the prediction that the U.S. will be the world’s biggest oil producer by 2017 is nonsense. Even on an ultra-optimistic estimate of how much “unconventional oil” it can eventually get out of the shale formations, it will still be importing a large proportion of its oil in 2035.

At the peak of U.S. oil production, in 1970, it produced 10.6 million barrels per day. It currently produces 9.6 million bar-

rels per day, and consumes 21 million bpd. It is preposterous to argue that it can close that gap by coming up with another 11 million bpd of unconventional oil at an economically viable price.

“Energy independence”, if it ever comes to the U.S., is likelier to come from a combination of conservation measures (like President Obama’s regulation that will almost double the fuel efficiency of American-built cars by 2016) and an increased emphasis on renewables (wind, solar, etc.).

And the whole Middle Eastern business is a red herring, because the U.S. does not depend heavily on Middle Eastern oil.

Most U.S. oil imports come from the Western hemisphere (Canada, Mexico, Venezuela) or from Africa (Nigeria, Algeria, Angola). Only 15 per cent of its oil comes from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait, and virtually none from anywhere else in the Gulf. Whatever America’s various wars in the region may have been about, they were not about “security of oil supply.”

Which leaves the business about shale gas and oil pushing the world’s greenhouse gas emissions over the top. They can’t do that, because we are ALREADY over the top. We need only continue on our present course, without any growth in “unconventional” oil and gas production, and we will be irrevocably committed to 2 degrees C of warming (3.5 degrees F) within ten years. Within 25 years we will be committed to +4 degrees C (7 degrees F).

So why are we fed a daily diet of misinformation about energy in general, and shale gas in particular? Because a lot of people have something to sell.

hey laid the lumber on the ground in early September, 1898. They laid a lot of lumber on the ground that month. The lumbermen and the contractors, the carpenters, the men hired to build a town. It was an exciting, chaotic time; structures of all sizes and shapes popping up seemingly overnight on the windswept prairie.

The Aikens Block arose at the same time and on the same block of Baker Street as the Townsite office (now the site of Cranbrook Photo), the McInnes Block (now the site of Heidi’s Restaurant) and the Cosmopolitan Hotel (the only remaining structure of the four).

There were plenty of hotels within a very small area: the Cranbrook, the Royal (Byng), the Canadian (York), the Wentworth, the Forrest, the Imperial and the Queen’s, but the town needed more accommodation and commercial business space. The Aikens Block fulfilled both needs It was to be a “magnificent building”, fronting both Baker and Cranbrook Street, woodframe, two stories high surmounted by an attractive round tower commanding one of the most desirable lots in the burgeoning metropolis. The sides of the building were in place by the end of the month and by the middle of November it was ready for occupation whilst praised for its “fine appearance” and its surety as a “real revenue getter,” what with its four commercial spaces on the first floor and several goodsized apartments on the second.

To understand the importance of the placement of the Aiken Block one must understand that downtown Cranbrook was, at that time and for many years afterwards, laid out very simply. When traveling from the south along Van Horne it was necessary to make a right hand turn at the corner by the Cranbrook Hotel, continue along Baker Street for one block and then make a left hand turn onto Cranbrook Street to leave town. Baker Street carried on towards the east of course, just as it does today. What was different was the fact that all traffic necessarily travelled through the downtown core of which the Aikens Block was the centre.

City and provincial engineering decisions over the last 40 years have almost completely destroyed whatever commercial value the original Baker-Cranbrook Street corner had, most noticeably by removing it altogether. Ongoing decisions to demolish historic buildings

Still, the machinations of contrary minds and mercenary wrecking balls were decades in the future as the Aikens Block rose to define the eastern end of Baker Street in September of 1898.

The building quickly became a forerunner of the modern-day shopping centre, offering all manner of attractions from Mrs. McMillan’s dress-making parlour, and Pieper & Currie Painters & Decorators to Miss O’Dell’s Millinery, Tate Jewelry and Horace E. Butler’s tonsorial establishment.

With the construction of the Hanson Block (Norbury Hotel), the Bank of Commerce (now the site of the Royal Bank) and the former Post Office and the opening of the Opera House at the Wentworth Hotel, the Aiken Block proved a worthy anchor to Cranbrook’s financial and entertainment district.

Over the years many businesses found their home in the Aikens block including Charles Campbell’s Undertaking and Furniture, the McInnis Meat

Market, the Vancouver Coffee House, the Montana Restaurant, and Beale & Elwell Real Estate.

A two-store addition, built by local undertaker W. Beatty in 1904 — he himself a tenant of the building — filled the remaining gap on Cranbrook Street between the original premises and the alleyway by adding another three more stores and a number of apartments.

In April, 1934, Aris Catsirelis, owner of the Patricia Café on Baker Street, purchased the building. as what he claimed was merely an investment, ensuring the tenants that they would not be disturbed. They weren’t. For one year. In February, 1935, the five tenants were asked to vacate forthwith in order that the structure be demolished and a modern one– story brick garage be built in its place under the supervision of the North Star Oil Co. The tenants; Moffatt’s Variety Store, Hanna’s Tire & Battery, the NuWay Café, Laurie Sign Works and Bullock’s Barbershop all found new homes. In April the cupola came down and soon there was nothing left of the structure. Contractor Julian

Mueller paid a nominal sum for salvage rights which included several large plate glass windows, fixtures and a large amount of lumber, much of which was converted to firewood. As stated at the time, “like a pig in the slaughterhouse, nothing but the squeal will be lost.”

The new building, housing Stan’s Super Service Station (later home to the Pat and U & I Cafes) opened for business in June, 1935, and over the years became a local landmark in its own right. It too, was demolished in more recent years — just one more historic pig gone to the slaughterhouse, so to speak. It was among the first Cranbrook landmarks to go up and among the first to come down.

Endnote: According to reports of the day the building was originally financed by J.M. Aikens (possibly a lawyer for the CPR, although little is known of him), L.A. Hamilton of the CPR Lands Dept. and surveyor of towns including Regina, Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Calgary and Sir William Whyte who served as transcontinental CPR line manager in later years.

NHL players start voting on ‘disclaimer’ after deadline passes CHRIS JOHNSTON Canadian Press

NEW YORK - Less than a day after letting a self-imposed deadline pass to declare a “disclaimer of interest,” NHL players were set to begin voting to restore their executive board’s authority to dissolve the union.

The NHLPA’s membership was scheduled to begin voting on the disclaimer at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, according to a source. It will be conducted over a 48-hour period.

The first vote, held over five days last month, passed overwhelmingly.

Should the same thing happen again and the NHLPA elects to notify the league it is disclaiming, it would open the door for players to file anti-trust lawsuits.

The new disclaimer vote was part of a busy Thursday that saw much more action away from the bargaining room than in it. The NHLPA also filed its statement of defence with the district court in New York, arguing that the lawsuit filed by the NHL last month should be dismissed because it was brought forward for “strategic reasons.”

The league had asked the court to rule on the legality of the lockout in a move considered to be a pre-emptive strike to a

potential “disclaimer of interest” from the NHLPA. The union had until Jan. 7 to make a response and filed its paperwork with the court a few days early.

Against that backdrop, the sides only met for about an hour on Thursday afternoon - a departure from more frequent negotiations in recent days. NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr led a group of players and staff into the session with U.S. federal mediator Scot Beckenbaugh while his brother Don stayed out of talks.

With no agreement in sight, the financial losses are mounting for both sides.

The league was hoping a 52-game schedule could be squeezed in if a deal was reached this week and training camps opened over the weekend. Bettman has set a deadline of Jan. 11 to preserve a 48-game season, the minimum he says the NHL is willing to consider playing.

UFA, Russia - An NHL lockout has helped lift Canada to gold at past world junior hockey championships.

But not this time.

Canada dominated en route to gold in 1995 and 2005 when the NHL also locked out its players.

Another labour stoppage this year, meant coach Steve Spott had most of the country’s top 19-year-old talent available to him, minus a forward and defenceman injured before the tournament.

But bronze is the best this Canadian team can do after a 5-1 loss to the United States in Thursday’s semifinal.

The Americans and defending champion Sweden will play for gold, while Canada takes on Russia for bronze Saturday in Ufa. The Swedes edged the hosts 3-2 in a shootout in the other semifinal.

Canada must find solace in extending its run of medals in this tournament to 15 consecutive years.

“We’ve got to come home with a medal,” captain Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. “It’s not the one we want to come home with, but we’ve got to do it for our country.”

to finishing first in its pool at 4-0 and earning the bye to the semifinal.

But for the second straight year, Canada failed to parlay the bye into a berth in the gold-medal game because of a semifinal loss.

“For it to happen again, it’s pretty heartbreaking,” said second-year forward Mark Scheifele.

The International Ice Hockey Federation is doing away with the bye starting in 2014, so the tournament will feature four quarter-finals instead of two.

Playing a quarter-final doesn’t seem to be an impediment to gold.

Three of the last five champions played a quarter-final and the U.S. could do that this year too.

So while the Americans flexed their goal-scoring muscles in a 7-0 win over the Czech Republic in Wednesday’s quarter-final, the Canadians vowed after their practice the same day they couldn’t have a slow start Thursday.

They then went out and did just that. The firepower that Canada purportedly had up front did not fire.

Scheifele, Jonathan Huberdeau and Ryan Strome would probably have joined Nugent-Hopkins in the NHL this season if not for the lockout. All four were

held off the scoresheet.

When Spott chose his 23 players at selection camp in Calgary last month, he said he did so with speed in mind. It was the Americans who made Canada look like they were standing still for two periods Thursday.

Led by swift Calgary Flames prospect John Gaudreau and American captain Jake McCabe, the U.S. beat Canada to the puck at both ends of the ice for 40 minutes to build a 4-0 lead.

Unlike last year’s 6-5 semifinal loss to Russia in Calgary, where Canada scored four third-period goals, this Canadian team didn’t rally to make it close.

Ty Rattie’s short-handed goal early in the third might have provided the spark, if Gaudreau didn’t then score his second of the game and Canada didn’t take two minor penalties in the last five minutes.

“They came out hot.

We came out not so hot,” Rattie said.

“Maybe we should have gone in before the game and kicked up a little bit more of a storm, but we haven’t done that yet. We haven’t had to so we didn’t want to go in there today and do anything different to alarm the kids or get them on edge. Maybe that’s something if you go back in time, you’d do different.”

Defenceman Dougie Hamilton and forward Boone Jenner were also candidates to play in the NHL this season. Canada had six players returning from the team that won bronze in 2012 and an NHL player in Edmonton’s Nugent-Hopkins.

It begs the question: What would this Canadian team have looked like if not for the lockout?

Canada’s defence was in complete disarray in front of him on the first U.S. goal and was porous on the next two scored by the Americans. After a fourth goal by the U.S. on 16 shots, Jordan Binnington made his first appearance in the tournament and made 25 saves.

Sports NFL teams no longer intimidated by wild-card game Barry Wilner Associated Press

NFL teams have no fear of playing in the wild-card round.

Recent history shows the playoff bye isn’t such a big deal anymore. In six of the last seven years, one of the Super Bowl participants didn’t get a bye to begin the post-season. And five of those teams wound up winning the NFL title.

So Green Bay’s blowing the bye by losing to Minnesota last Sunday might not be such a setback. Same for Houston, which had an even bigger fall, fumbling away home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs as well as the week off, by losing three of its last four.

Of course, Texans coach Gary Kubiak recognizes the week-toweek nature of pro football, and how things can change quickly in seven days - and last for a month, right to a championship.

“That’s life, and that’s part of football,” Kubiak said. “How’d you play

last week? How have you played the last few weeks? What have you done lately? That’s our world. We understand that, and it hasn’t been good the last few weeks, so hopefully we get it better.”

Nobody knows how to achieve that improvement more than the Packers. Two years ago, they barely squeezed into the Super Bowl chase, then raced to three road victories and, finally, a title win over Pittsburgh.

“I’d have preferred a week off, to be honest with you,” Packers receiver Jordy Nelson said.

“But we put ourselves in this situation throughout the whole year. It’s not just this last game.

“This last game had a lot riding on it for us, so ... we’re going to go play.

Whatever it takes, we just have to win from here on out.”

That begins Saturday night at Lambeau Field against Minnesota. Had the Packers beaten the Vikings last Sunday, they would be sitting at home

this weekend watching the Bears play at San Francisco. Instead, they will trudge onto the tundra to face rushing king Adrian Peterson, who ran around, through and over them for 199 yards to get the Vikings into the playoffs.

“The cool thing about the playoffs is that once you get in, anything can happen. You see it happen all of the time, teams make runs and end up winning the Super Bowl.”

Jared Allen The Vikings had no chance for a bye; they never really were in the chase for the NFC North title. They’re just glad to be in the tournament, knowing that the Steelers, Colts, Packers and Giants (twice) recently covered the lengthier

route to the NFL championship.

Some teams already are on runs. Denver has won 11 straight to grab the top spot in the AFC. Washington takes a seven-game winning into Sunday’s home game against Seattle, winner of five in a row.

As for the four teams sitting it out this weekend, there certainly are positives to some down time. Denver and Atlanta were last off on Oct. 21, San Francisco and New England on Nov. 4.

That’s a long time without a break.

“Of course I appreciate the bye. It’s the shortest route to get where we want to go,” Denver linebacker Von Miller said.

“We definitely want to take advantage of this bye week, we’re resting our bodies and going

over some stuff that we did well, some stuff that we did bad during the season.

“It’s just trying to fine-tune this ship before we get ready to try to make one of the biggest runs of the season.

Yes, the bye affords them a chance to get healthier, particularly the 49ers, who are concerned about star defensive lineman Justin Smith’s partially torn left triceps.

But there’s also the chance of getting stale, something Green Bay experienced last year, and the Giants took advantage of it. Same thing for the Falcons the previ-

ous season, and the Packers pounced.

It’s an interesting dynamic. Some coaches and players prefer to simply keep on playing, especially when their seasons have ended the way the Broncos, Redskins, Seahawks and Vikings closed theirs.

Others covet the week off because it means they will be at home for their first post-season game. Not that there’s any guarantee there, either: at least one team with a bye has lost its divisional round game in each of the last seven playoffs.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Francisco 49ers placekicker David Akers said Thursday he received death threats on Twitter and closed the account.

Akers received the death threats late last month, but is unsure at

the number of threats because he did not go further back on his account to count.

Once he initially saw them, he reported it to team and NFL security personnel.

The 49ers said Thursday they were aware of the situation, and so was the league.

GREEN BAY, Wis. Aaron Rodgers is putting up MVP-worthy numbers again, throwing for more touchdowns than anyone in the NFL and ranking near the top in completions and yards passing.

Imagine if he’d had all of his favourite toys for the whole year.

With Randall Cobb back from a sprained ankle and Jordy Nelson planning to play in Saturday night’s NFC wildcard game against Minnesota, the Green Bay Packers finally will have all four top receivers for the first time in, essentially, three months.

“It makes us very dangerous,” Greg Jennings said Thursday. “It’s pretty obvious when we have all four guys healthy, the amount of big plays that we can accumulate goes up. Aaron has a lot more options.”

There’s no question Rodgers is a special quarterback, one of the league’s finest, and he’d put up impressive numbers if he had only one or two guys to throw to. But he has four - count ‘em, four - receivers who could be No. 1s on many other teams.

“I don’t think so,” Nelson said when asked if any other team is as loaded at receiver as the Packers. “I don’t think you can go four and five deep like we can.”

Jennings had 1,000yard seasons from 200810, and came up just short (949) last year despite missing three games. Nelson has a career average of 15.1 yards per catch, and joined Jennings in the 1,000yard club last year. James Jones led the NFL with 14

TD catches this year, and matched a Packers record with two scores in three straight games.

Cobb is the newest of the bunch, and all the second-year receiver has done is lead the team in catches (80) and yards receiving (954).

Add in big tight end Jermichael Finley and you can see why defensive co-ordinators have nightmares about facing the Packers.

“You can go to any one of them and get a big

play, so it makes it more difficult for defences to defend,” Green Bay offensive co-ordinator Tom Clements said. “If (opponents) only have one guy or two guys that they have to defend against, they can structure their defences and set it up in certain ways to take those guys away. But if you have four out there, and sometimes even five, it makes it more difficult.

“So if it’s more difficult for them, it’s advantageous for us.”

Reid close to deal with Chiefs Dave Skre t ta Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs should be quite familiar by now.

The two sides spent much of Thursday in negotiations for Reid to become the Chiefs’ coach, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the situation.

The discussions followed nine hours of talks Wednesday that went well enough that Reid cancelled plans to

interview for other openings, the person told the AP. It was unclear which details were preventing the two sides from reaching an agreement.

The Philadelphia Eagles fired Reid after 14 seasons on Monday, the same day the Chiefs parted ways with coach Romeo Crennel after the worst season in franchise history.

The search for Crennel’s replacement has been led by Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, who intends to take on more responsibility in the dayto-day operation of the franchise. Also on hand

was team president Mark Donovan, who has a connection to Reid after spending six seasons as the Eagles’ senior vice-president of business operations.

Reid had been linked to the opening in Arizona before the Chiefs put on the press.

The Cardinals now intend to interview former Chiefs coach Todd Haley, a person familiar with their plans told the AP. Haley led the Chiefs to the AFC West title in 2010, but was fired in December 2011 and spent this past season as the offensive co-ordinator in Pittsburgh.

Annie’s Mailbox

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My sister-in-law, “Nina,” is my husband’s only sibling. She is divorced with grown children.

Nina appears to be sweet to most people, but she can get pretty ugly, especially when she drinks. She has ruined more than one occasion with her offensive outbursts, often directed at members of my family. She says these horrid things in front of my children, which makes them uncomfortable.

Nina frequently pops in at our home, so I make polite chitchat and then proceed to go about what I was doing and let her visit with my husband. I don’t want to prevent him from having a relationship with his sister.

Apparently, this is the wrong approach, because Nina now tells my husband she “has no idea what she ever did to me” and doesn’t understand why I “hate” her. He sticks up for me, but it puts him in a tough spot.

I should also mention that in the past three months, my sister died, my children left for college, and I had to move my mother into a senior center and sell her house. I do not hate my sister-in-law, but clearly, I have other priorities at this time. I realize I cannot control her behavior, only my own. So, any advice for me? -- Trying To Fly Under the Radar Dear Trying: We don’t believe there is a “right” approach to Nina. She is simply looking for reasons to respond negatively to you.

Let your husband deal with his sister. Be as polite and pleasant as you can manage, but otherwise, ignore her. You should not have to jump through hoops to please someone who isn’t interested. You have enough to deal with.

Dear Annie: My husband and I were raised to eat dinner with our families. We ate what Mom prepared, or we went without. We have continued this tradition with our three children. With the exception of sauerkraut and Brussels sprouts, they will eat any food put in front of them. I believe that few children are picky eaters. Rather, their parents have catered to their preferences because it is easier.

We have many friends and family with children the same as age as ours, and I am appalled by what they eat. And they wonder why their kids are often sick and grumpy. I don’t say a word, but it drives me nuts to see a kid eat nothing for dinner but be the first in line for dessert.

My question is this: When we are entertaining other people’s children and one of them says to me, “I don’t like that,” is it OK for me to say, “The appropriate response is ‘No, thank you.’” And can I say that telling the hostess you don’t like her food is considered rude? Am I blowing this out of proportion?

-- Midwest Cook Dear Midwest: These are things the parents should be teaching their children, but obviously, they are sleeping on the job. If the parents are not present, you may educate the children. If the children are your relatives, you may also correct them, provided the parents do not object. However, if they are other people’s children and the parents are present, you may say the first part, but not the rest.

Dear Annie: This is in response to “Curled,” whose ex-husband barely sees his older kids now that he’s remarried and has a baby.

I would highly recommend that the writer and any couples with similar issues look at family mediation programs. Many are lowcost or free. The presence of an unbiased mediator gives parents the chance to explain their perspectives while ensuring that the conversation is productive, centered on the needs of the children, and directed toward visitation and custody solutions. In addition, mediation can also allow parents an opportunity to understand how their behavior may be affecting the children. Yme Woensdregt ered the importance of time. Americans (and Canadians as well) often conceive of time in ways far different from others around the world.

Kohls wrote, “Time is, for the average American, of utmost importance. To the foreign visitor, Americans seem to be more concerned with getting things accomplished on time (according to a predetermined schedule) than they are with developing deep interpersonal relations. Schedules, for the American, are meant to be planned and then followed in the smallest detail. It may seem to you that most Americans are completely controlled by the little machines they wear on their wrists, cutting their discussions off

abruptly to make it to their next appointment on time.”

Have you ever noticed how we talk about time? Our language is filled with expressions about time as something we can control.

We talk about “time management”; we believe time can be “kept”, “filled”, “saved”, “used”, “spent”, “wasted”, “lost”, or even “killed”. Our lives are governed by clocks — the punch clock, the appointment book, the reminder on our tablets, the alarm clock.

The whole point of the liturgical calendar is to create a sanctuary in time similar to the Jewish observance of the Sabbath. Rabbi Abraham Heschel talks about the Sabbath as a way of creating “holiness in time”.

He writes, “Judaism is a religion of time … the Bible senses the diversified character of time. There are no two hours alike. Every hour is unique and the only one given at the moment, exclusive and endlessly precious … the meaning of the Sabbath is to celebrate time rather than space. Six days a week we live

under the tyranny of things in space; on the Sabbath we try to become attuned to holiness in time. It is a day on which we are called upon to share in what is eternal in time, to turn from the results of creation to the mystery of creation; from the world of creation to the creation of the world.”

He continues, “Judaism teaches us to be attached to holiness in time, to be attached to sacred events, to learn how to consecrate sanctuaries that emerge from the magnificent stream of the year. The Sabbaths are our great cathedrals…”

That is also the purpose of the liturgical calendar, to set some time aside as holy, to celebrate a precious hour which we will never have again, to erect cathedrals of time in our lives.

Christmas is such a cathedral. Today, on this 11th day of Christmas, perhaps we can pipe our joy with those eleven pipers piping in this vast and glorious cathedral of time.

PORTLAND, Maine — A smuggling ring brought narwhal tusks from the Canadian Artic into Maine in a trailer with a secret compartment and then illegally sold them to American buyers, officials said.

Andrew Zarauskas, of New Jersey, and Jay Conrad, of Tennessee, will be arraigned in Bangor, Maine, next week on 29 federal smuggling and money laundering charges each.

For nearly a decade, two Canadians smuggled the whale tusks into Maine and shipped them via FedEx to Zarauskas, Conrad and other unnamed American buyers, according to an indictment.

Narwhals are known as the unicorns of the sea for their spiral, ivory tusks that can grow longer than 8 feet. The tusks

can sell for thousands of dollars each, but it’s illegal to import them into the U.S. The court document doesn’t specify how much money was involved, but it says the Canadian sellers received at least 150 payments from tusk buyers. ``The conspiracy we’ve alleged was over a period of 10 years, so there appears to have been enough of a market to support that length of conduct,’’ said Todd Mikolop, who is prosecuting the case for the environmental crimes section of the Department of Justice.

Narwhals live in Arctic waters and are harvested by Inuit hunters for their meat, skin and tusks, said Calvin Kania, president of Furcanada in British Columbia, which sells tusks to buyers who want them for display purposes or to

turn into jewelry.

The tusks range from 3 feet (nearly 1 metre) to more than 8 feet (2 metres), and typically sell for $1,000 to $7,000 each, Kania said. He ships tusks worldwide, but not to countries that prohibit imports, including the U.S., the United Kingdom and Australia.

There is no defence attorney listed in court documents for Zarauskas. An attorney from the federal public defender’s office is listed as Conrad’s lawyer, but she was out of the office and not immediately available for comment. Phone messages were left for Zarauskas and at possible listing for Conrad.

The indictment filed last month says the two Canadians would buy the tusks from retail stores in northern Canada and use the Internet and email to arrange sales to U.S. buyers.

DOUG McMILLAN (Dugal Roy) Doug was Presbyterian by faith and of Scottish ancestry. He was born April 1st, 1931 and raised on his parentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm, John and Muriel, near Avonmore, Ontario, along with 4 brothers, Alfred (Jeanette), Lyle (Elizabeth), Arnold (deceased) and Keith (Sharon), and 1 sister Alice (deceased) (Irwin Bender). Doug passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Maxville Manor on Saturday, October 20th, 2012. He was 81. In 1947 at the age of 16 Doug decided to go on the harvest excursion to the prairies. From there he continued out west to Kimberley, BC where he became a hard rock miner underground at Cominco.

Here he met and married the love of his life, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nancy Patâ&#x20AC;? Schorlemer, June 24th, 1950. Dougâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family life flourished with 5 wonderful children, Patricia Fleming, Susan (Hubert Casselman), Michael, Robert (Linda) and Dianne (Donn MacMillan). Then, in the fall of 1965 they moved East to take over his parentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm in Ontario, adding another son Derek (Shelly) to his family in 1971. Doug was predeceased by his son Michael in 1975. In 1992 Doug and Nancy retired to their home on Main Street in Avonmore and enjoyed retired life with travels, new hobbies and many active hours volunteering in the community.

In 2012, Nancy and Doug celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Some of his other life highlights included working on the Dew Line in the Baffin Islands, managing a mine on Vancouver Island, the days at the Grand Duke near Alaska, his partnership of a gold mine and active involvement with the milk board. Also, over the years he made many cherished friends bowling, curling, shuffle board and playing cribbage. Teasing was Dougâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second nature, laughing was his best medicine and his 15 Grandchildren and 15 Great-Grandchildren were the highlight of his life.
