Desert team nets Major title at Richmond hockey classic by Don Fennell Sports Editor

A team from the desert claimed one of the top prizes at the 32nd annual Richmond International Midget Hockey Tournament. Arizona Bobcats U16AAA edged Edmonton's United Cycle AAA 3-2 in the Midget Major Division final Monday at Minoru Arenas, the Bobcats' fifth win in seven tournament games. Kelowna Rockets won the Tier 1 trophy with a wellearned 4-1 victory over a skilled Delta Hockey Academy Wild team which was made up entirely of 15-year-olds. The Rockets were also the lone team at the tournament to go undefeated, winning all seven of their games during which they outscored their opponents 34-7. Semiahmoo A2's dominated territorially but managed to score only a single goal (by Sean Pennigton at 15:02 of the opening period) in the Tier 2 final against the Anaheim Jr Ducks in a 1-0 victory. Anaheim was able to stay close thanks the often-spectacular play of goaltender Tyler Gealy. Employing a strong defensive game, the Kitchener

Junior Rangers took top honors in the Tier 2 Division with a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Jr Gulls U16AAA. The Gulls, also a solid defensive team, won the first matchup between the teams, 4-3, early in the tournament. Matt Jones and Christian Cakebread paced Arizona with a goal and an assist each versus United Cycle. Jones set up Cakebread for the game's opening goal midway through the first period and scored unassisted four minutes later. Cakebread then drew an assist along with Auston Matthews on Jake Durflinger's late second period tally that gave Arizona a seemingly commanding 3-0 lead. But a late goal by Brandon Tyler at 18:18 of the middle frame gave United optimism going into the third period. United pulled to within a goal when Braeden Farge scored midway through the third period, but they couldn't get the equalizer as Arizona goaltender Nick Nast stood tall the rest of the way. Tanner Campbell had two assists to help lift Kelowna over Delta Hockey Academy. Delta enjoyed an early lead in the game when Keenan Scardina scored at 3:17 of the first period, but Kelowna's patience and depth eventually won out.
