I enjoy all sorts of art and media to work with including drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpting, wood working and pottery. As a child I liked drawing horses and I still do! Lately I really enjoy pottery. I like to experiment and use several media together. I have shown and sold my work in both BC and Alberta. I enjoy teaching and have had the opportunity to have taught many art subjects from ages Adult to toddler. Stop by the Leisure services office and see some samples of the encaustic painting projects.

Community
Cranbrook Snow Angels It’s important to note that this year’s project is currently full to capacity with eligible service recipients, including a waiting list of more good citizens in need. What we are looking for now are potential volunteers to step forward to help out as matches for current Snow Angel recipients. Volunteers are required to go through a standard registration process, including a criminal record check, before being matched with a project recipient. Volunteer Leaders are also needed to assist with organizing work in their zone. The success of this program is contingent on able-bodied neighbours stepping forward and offering a helping hand to residents on the wait list. This is a great opportunity for individuals, groups, couples or families to serve in your community. Volunteers, please register today by calling Laurie at Volunteer Kootenays for more information, 250.426.8019.

If you are interested in applying to be a Snow Angel service recipient next year, watch for community notices in the Fall, 2013. Recognize YOUR Snow Angel! Has someone been an angel and helped you shovel? Say thanks by nominating them as a Snow Angel. They will receive an official letter of thanks and be entered to win two free tickets to this years’ Volunteer Recognition & Awards Gala in April. Call Volunteer Kootenays at 250.426.8019.

how about a game of wallyball?
Wallyball is a fast-paced sport that combines handball (racquetball with no racquet), tennis, and volleyball. It is played in a racquetball court with the net hung above the center line, dividing the court in half. The ball used is the same size as a regular volleyball. It can be played with anywhere from two to six players per side. Much of the strategy used in Wallyball is similar to that used in volleyball, with different rules. Many team’s create their own rules with an emphasis to enhance physical fitness and to have fun! For more information about booking the racquet court for a game of Wallyball contact Leisure Services at 250-489-0220.

Why shoes?
Aquatic shoes provide the wearer with more stability and traction for an upright stance when moving through the water. They reduce the effects of impact when jumping in shallow water and add resistance in deep and shallow water, thereby further helping build strength. They help to prevent accidental slips on the deck and in the pool. They also help protect the feet from infection and protect the joints from impact. What kind of shoes can you wear? Old trainers (as long as they are clean!), surf walkers, sport sandals, or specific shoes made for aquatic fitness. Ask any of our aquafit instructors where to buy these types of shoes, they will be happy to assist you!
Shallow/Transitional Aquafit
Shallow water aquafit has the benefit of providing excellent cardio, strength and flexibility training. The option to work at a transitional depth (neck deep with or without a buoyancy belt), provides participants who experience lower body joint issues, to participate and improve in all weight bearing activities. Suitable for everyone.
