Lhtako Dene Nation received approval in principle for city water service from A4

Dec. 5 Quesnel city council has decided to approve in principle adding the Lhtako Dene nation onto its water service. City manager Byron Johnson noted this is only an agreement in principle as problems often arise as the final details are being worked out.

Dec. 5 Quesnel RCMP have taken out another marijuana grow-operation and seized 350 plants as well as grow-op equipment. A 39-year-old male who is believed to be responsible for this illegal operation was arrested without incident.

Dec. 7 RCMP victims services receive a donation of 120 stuffed animals from the vintage car club. This is the fourth year the vintage car club has helped raise donations of stuffed animals for the RCMP Victims Services.

Dec. 7 Cariboo MLA Bob Simpson is skeptical of the announcement that Quesnel’s timber supply has increased after reading the official report. Parliamentary Secretary for Forestry, John Rustad applauded the report and the findings.

Dec. 12 Correlieu student Julien Clement cut off and donated 11 inches of hair to the Canadian Cancer Society. This is the second time the student has donated his locks to the Canadian Cancer Society and he is hoping to grow his hair out again before his graduation from Correlieu.

Dec. 14 Duncan Barnett has thrown his proverbial hat in the ring as MLA for Cariboo North. He is seeking NDP candidacy status. Barnett is a long-time rancher and speaks passionately about natural resources and land management. He cites his strong agricultural and natural resources background as an excellent foundation for the position.

Dec. 14 A new baby anemone was born at the Nature Education Resource Centre, a rare occurrence in captivity. The centre is accepting suggestions for a name for the baby anemone until the end of January and the child whose name is chosen receives a prize.

Dec. 19 Federal MP Dick Harris denies any federal funding for the Multi-Centre was forthcoming as the fund request never reached the federal government. It didn’t receive provincial commitments before applications to the funding source closed. Barkerville’s Chinese cultural exhibit receives funding for an international tour.

Dec. 21 Quesnel City Council began introductory preparations for Budget 2013. Although early in the process, staff are predicting a status quo budget.

OPINIONS

Taxed

t’s a new year, and that means that all levels of government have their hands in your pockets a little more deeply than in 2012. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation sent out a press release last week outlining just how much additional pocket picking is coming our way in 2013. The list is substantial. The most substantial, and perhaps the most unfair, is the boost in Medical Services Plan premiums. These premiums will go up by $60 per family this year, and have now risen 24 per cent ($300 per family) in three years — far more than the rate of inflation. This boost in MSP fees was first brought in by the provincial government to help deal with its deficit, and it has since discovered that it’s a tax boost that causes minimal political trouble. It appears this premium will keep rising until enough members of the public start to pay full attention to just how much it is costing them. The federal government doesn’t get off scot-free. As of Jan. 1, premiums for Employment Insurance are rising, and so are contributions to the Canada Pension Plan. While contributors will get their CPP contributions back eventually if they retire and collect CPP, the same cannot be said for EI. A small portion of the population actually collects it, but all working people and their employers pay dearly for the program. The province is facing a massive deficit and claims it will bring in a balanced budget, so that adds up to all kinds of tax increases that we have yet to see. But in the meantime, BC Hydro, controlled by the province, is raising rates by almost four per cent on April 1. Taxpayers may get a small break if the PST, due to come back on April 1, isn’t levied on some services, as happened under the HST. We will wait and see what happens on that front. One thing is certain — governments have an insatiable appetite for our money. While much of the money they take goes to useful services, there is plenty of room for better management and for minimal tax increases. –Black Press

I

Resetting for the new year

am a night owl still trying to be an early bird. Lately, though, I haven’t been trying hard at all. Over the Christmas holidays I allowed myself to stay up late and sleep in more. Because I was sleeping in more I was exercising less and because I was exercising less I started eating crap again. A couple weeks of that and I’m now geared up for a self-imposed intervention. Feeling crummy is not unfamiliar territory to me. I’ve written a few times about my long struggling battle of the bulge and how directly related the food I eat affects the way I feel. What may be unfamiliar is the potentially speedier recovery from my fall off the proverbial wagon. “You’re skinny,” my friend said when she learned of my junk food relapse. “You should allow yourself the occasional

Lori Welbourne

On A Brighter Note treat.” First of all, I’ve only ever been skinny once and that was 15 years ago and only lasted about four days, but thank you. Secondly, an occasional cupcake will do to me what an occasional hit of heroine will do to a druggie. I’d really rather not spend the year ahead jonesing for junk food like so many years past. So how do I jump back on the wagon and reverse my last two weeks of destruction? By waking up early for starters. “The early bird gets the

worm,” my dad used to say when I was a sleepy-head teen. Fine with me, I’d think to myself, it can have the worm. Eventually I took him less literally and gave his early morning strategy a try. Initially I disliked exercising before the sun was up, but after awhile I found that if I didn’t get it over with right away, I wouldn’t do it at all. I also discovered that once I went to the trouble of working up a sweat at the start of my day, I’d be more likely to eat healthy and get to bed at a decent hour later on. My plan now is to return to that great habit for at least two weeks to put myself back where I was and feeling good again. If it sounds like I’m embarking on a new year’s resolution, that’s okay. I am. I’ve always liked the fresh start of a new year, a new month or a new week to make goals for myself. And I’m experienced

enough at failing miserably that I won’t abandon my resolutions for long periods of time anymore. I now cut myself some slack and keep trying until I finally find some success with whatever it is I’m attempting to achieve. Of course, rising with the sun isn’t the only solution. It’s doing what works for us as individuals and our willingness to persist that makes the difference. My dad was right about the early bird getting the worm, but there’s another equally correct saying about how it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese. Personally, if I had to choose between a worm or cheese, I’d eat the latter. But I’d better compare their calorie counts before deciding for sure. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. More than 60 years of support Editor: Many of you probably saw the article a few months ago in which we were informed that the current coordinators of the Miss Quesnel Self Development Program are retiring and are looking for people to take over the program. What you may not have seen is the contribution that the Miss Quesnel Program has made to the community of Quesnel since it’s beginnings in 1949. Although the very

Letters to the Editor

first iteration of the Miss Quesnel program began with a “bathing beauties” contest for the July 1 celebrations in 1949, when Vera Hillen was named Miss Quesnel, the program has progressed dramatically from a beauty contest to a program in which candidates spend six months of their lives immersed in skills and life training which will serve them for the rest of their lives. Today, the program is

offered to young woman between the ages of 16 – 19 who take part in public speaking, time management, money management, self defense, and customer service training, in addition to many others. They also spend a significant amount of time volunteering around the community at events like Family Day, the Rotary Club Auction, Business Excellence Awards, Quesnel Rodeo, Winter Festival and nearly every

other event that occurs in Quesnel. The program teaches these young ladies selfworth, the importance of volunteerism and how to be an active community leader. Many past participants of this program still reside in the Quesnel area, working at the Chamber of Commerce, with the Canadian Cancer Society, running their own photography businesses and working at a variety of other

businesses around town. The women who have participated in the program always seem to take something good out of it, whether they are crowned royalty or not. The Miss Quesnel Self Development Program is an integral part of the Quesnel Community. It would be a shame to see such a worthwhile program end because no one stepped up to continue it. A huge thank you must already go out to Ashley Roberts

for coming forward to become the candidate coordinator, but she cannot keep the program going alone. The outgoing committee is more than willing to help new coordinators in the coming year to ensure that this program will continue. If you would like more information on becoming a coordinator, contact Liz Miller miss. quesnel@gmail.com or at 250-991-0912. Kara Purdue Quesnel
