To date, 21 collapsing shelters have been replaced with brick and metal roofed homes while 29 families now have safe and more sanitary private brick latrines with attached washing facilities.

More will be built in the coming months, thanks to the generosity of local contributors.

Medically, well over 1,000 individuals of many backgrounds have received medical treatment for ailments as diverse as malaria and typhoid to cancer, hydrocephalus, sicklecell anemia and broken bones. Partnering with a church in the Eastern United States, HHU is now looking into the establishment of a clinic to serve the needs to the villages in the area it serves.

A number of women have been trained in tailoring and small business opportunities have been provided to help sustain several families.

This growth in compassion has been made possible through the generosity of local people and the support of many local businesses. Connecting to the people of the Bugembe region of Jinja, Ugan-

da to Cranbrookians through sponsorship, letters, gifts and photos has been the backbone of HHU. Two teams over the past two years have devoted two weeks each in building houses and latrines, distributing supplies, leading bible camps, meeting the people, and returning with a coating of light red dust, many lifechanging memories and a determination to return. Of the 37 who gave of their time, 28 are from the Cranbrook and Fernie communities.

On Saturday, January 5th, Kimi Toyota will be sharing stories of her home, Uganda, and video of the most recent team trip in October of 2012. Information will also be provided on the next team venture, scheduled for August of 2013.

A silent auction will seek to raise enough funds to offset the operating costs for the year so that future giving will be directed entirely to projects and sponsorship. The evening at the Alliance Church gymnasium is also intended to highsee Ugandans page 3

The other day, I read about an interesting New Year’s tradition. Instead of struggling with resolutions you made with best intentions on January 1 and feel defeated about not keeping 364 days later on New Year’s Eve, try this strategy: Start the year with an empty jar. Each time something good happens, make a note and put it into the jar. Then on New Year’s Eve, empty the jar and look at all the great things that have happened over the course of the year.

For some reason, it sometimes seems easier to remember the hard knocks in life and lose sight of all the little successes and delightful moments.

Some might say, never being completely satisfied is necessary motivation for improvement, but wouldn't it be nicer to build on past successes, rather than feel you are constantly catching up to your expectations?

One of the areas I will be looking to take this different approach to this year, is my garden. It would be easy to dwell on the things that are still not the way they are planned, from weeds and brown spots in the lawn to plants that didn’t make it through the winter. But when I think back a little further, there are many pleasant memories from last year’s garden. There was that moment when the first tulip poked its shoots out of the ground and the time when we realized that the iris we thought would never bloom were actually going to show their vibrant purple colours.

Nothing, however, will stick in my memory like harvest time with my family - everybody cutting fresh lettuce, picking juicy raspberries that would never make it into the house and digging the small yet delicious carrots.

We did not spend a lot of time in the garden, there are many things we could have done. Right now, some of the evidence is covered by a blanket of snow, such as the planters that were not moved into the garage or the garden tools that were left out by the composter. But really, they will still be there when the snow melts in the spring.

There are things we would like to get accomplished in our yard this year. Maybe install an irrigation system and get right on those aphids should they attack the plum trees again.

But maybe instead of saying: we finally have to put in the irrigation system this year, we could look at expanding on the work we have already accomplished in creating a soothing water feature.

And really, last year we had our first plums on the trees since planting them, even with aphids running wild on one of them. So where is there but to go up for next season?

Gardening is still one of the most important pastimes in North America. Especially many young families seem to be looking to their backyards and community plots for activities and to grow some healthy and nutritious food. According to the free dictionary online a pastime is “an activity that occupies one’s spare time pleasantly”. So why are we sometimes intimidated by gardening or stressing out over our spaces not being perfect?

Gardening should most importantly be fun.

Some people like to spend their entire season in the garden, planting and weeding, pruning and clipping to get the perfect look for their space.

Those of us who don’t have the time to spend or the space available that shouldn’t mean we can’t be just as content. A single planter on the balcony or a grove of trees and rows of flower beds - all are the works of passionate gardeners.

I already have my jar picked out to collect those memories for 2013. Cheers to a year of happy gardening.

“BC Jobs Start Here” soon to sponsor job fair in Kimberley Back by British Columbian demand, a new series of ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ job fairs will come to 22 communities beginning in January to promote current job opportunities, career trends and skills training - with the addition of a new Skills4BC booth.

The new fairs will begin in Pitt Meadows on Jan. 22 and wrap up in Vancouver on March 28. One of the fairs will take place in Kimberley on February 19 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“From public feedback, we know that Brit-

ish Columbians found the job fairs to be helpful in a number of ways - for connecting faceto-face with employers, for practicing interview skills, for finding out what jobs and skills are in demand, and for even learning more about B.C.’s economy. Our government is excited to extend this opportunity to even more British Columbians in the months ahead,” said Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Responsible for Labour Pat Bell.

These new fairs are a continuation of the 24

events held in communities throughout B.C. between September and November 2012, where more than 31,000 British Columbians of all ages attended, from high school students to older workers looking to reenter the workforce.

A new ‘Skills4BC’ booth will be onsite at each job fair with staff to answer questions and share information on skills training in B.C. Exhibitors at each fair will also include employers from a range of sectors, including postsecondary institutions,

training authorities, industry associations and health authorities, as well as local WorkBC Employment Services Centres and the ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ mobile exhibit.

The ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ job fairs are free and open to anyone looking to connect with a local employer or find more information on skills training, career development and more.

Brown Bag Lunch Moves to Wednesdays

A discount of 5% will be granted on all 2013 Utility Accounts paid for the year and received at City Hall on or before February 28, 2013.

Try the Pre-Authorized Payment Plan for your bi-monthly utility bill. This plan is convenient and avoids late payment fees. For those already on the pre-authorized payment plan, please note your bi-monthly payment amount will automatically increase to reflect the 2013 utility rates.

The bi-monthly payments are made through your bank by pre-authorized debits on the 1st day of every 2nd month commencing February 1, 2013.

Application forms are available at the City Hall Finance Department. For further information on this plan, call City Hall at (250) 426-4211.

Animal Control Bylaw – Dog Licensing

Any person that is a resident of the City and who is the Owner of a dog being 2 months of age or older, shall ensure a valid dog license is obtained. No person shall own, keep or harbour an unlicensed dog in the City of Cranbrook. Licenses issued for dogs are valid for the calendar year, January 1 to December 31 and can be purchased at City Hall. License fees for spayed or neutered dogs is $37; dogs not spayed or neutered the license fee is $60. Fee is discounted by $25 upon early license renewal, prior to February 28th of each year. Visit our website and click on ‘Bylaws’ for more on all of our City bylaws.

Pick up yours at City Hall or download from our website. Don’t forget each household is allowed a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles, including prefabricated receptacles and plastic bags, per weekly pickup.

Effective January 1, 2013, the Brown Bag Lunch has moved to Wednesday. Due to the rebroadcast of Cranbrook City Council meetings on SHAW Cable on Tuesday evenings, many residents did not have an opportunity to see the Council meeting prior to the Brown Bag lunch, held following the second Council meeting of each month – held from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in Council Chambers at City Hall. The Brown Bag Lunch is intended to allow residents to ask questions of Mayor and Council, in a less formal setting than a regular Council meeting. Topics for discussion will be raised by the public in attendance. Please join us.
