Photojournalism captures moments of history Jenna Hauck The Progress
F
or the past 13 weeks, I’ve been taking an online world history course. In several of the more recent video lectures, the instructor has talked about the importance of photojournalism in history. He’s mentioned famous photos such as Eddie Adams’ 1968 image of general Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet Cong
prisoner in Saigon, and the photo of the protester standing in front of a column of tanks in Tiananmen Square taken by Jeff Widener in 1989. These historic images are known around the world. They are pieces of global history that will never be forgotten. I came across more historic images a few weeks ago after doing some research at the Chilliwack Archives — of course these photos were on a much smaller and more

local scale. This made me think. In 25, 50 or 100 years, people here in Chilliwack will likely look back at some of my images remembering the bigger events of 2012, like the BC Hydro substation fire, and Justin Trudeau’s visit to Chilliwack. Or perhaps Chilliwack remembers more fondly some of our smaller events. I’m sure my photos of little Johnny playing soccer and Sally at the Chilliwack
Fair have been snipped out of the paper only to be put into people’s homes as refrigerator art, or tucked away into a scrapbook. They may be small or insignificant events for most people, but to some, they’re memorable times in someone’s life. each week, let alone each year. Such is the life of a photojournalist. We shoot, we file, we move on to the next assignment. But with each assignment we shoot, we are capturing a tiny piece of history in someone’s world — whether it be international, national, or local within our own community. I’ll admit it would be nice if I were recognized internationally for one of my images, but until then, I’m more than happy to be creating images of local history here in Chilliwack.

1920 ~ 2012 Kathleen Gallis (nee Jane) passed away into the presence of her Lord on Sunday, DeGALLIS cember 23. She was born on April 29, 1920 in Wowota, SK and was the youngest of seven children. Kathleen moved to New Westminster as a young woman in the 1940’s and there met the love of her life, Vince Gallis. They married on December 27, 1943 and were married for sixty-two years. Kathleen was a faithful pastor’s wife, church leader, musician and business woman, managing a department in a large store in New Westminster and later SAAN store in Chilliwack. She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn and her sister, Gladys Atkinson as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed on earth, but is rejoicing in Heaven.

(nee Seefried) Linda Marie House (Seefried) was born in High River, Alberta on the 9 Oct 1945 and passed away HOUSE on the 20th of December 2012, at Christine Morrison Hospice, after a short battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband William House; sons: Kevin and Derek; sisters: Janet and Debbie; daughter-in-law, Joann; and grandchildren: Meghan and Austin; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She has left a void that can’t be filled and Linda will be missed immensely. No formal funeral service will be held at this time. There will be a
celebration of life for Linda on the 19 January 2013, at the Chilliwack Senior Veterans Society, 9233 Main Street, starting at 1:00 pm. Merlyn went into the hospital with a stomach ache on October 26, 2012 and after several tests they found cancer. Merlyn was born in 1943 in Regina Saskatchewan He is predeceased by his father Murray and mother Edna Merlyn lost his son Danny, at 10 years old in 1977 from a car accident . Merlyn is survived by his wife Kyoung; his daughters: Raylene of Calgary Alberta, Lorna Penner of Langley and Danielle Hardy of Langley; and his son, Andy 13 years old; and several grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Susan Douglas; sons: David (Grace) and Glen (Jenna); grandchildren: Shalina, Kieran, Corissia and Maxwell; brother, Doug Thompson; sisters-inlaw, Betty-Rose Harrington and Elaine Peacock; as well as extended and adopted family and many friends. Myrna was a teacher, a singer and an avid quilter who created memories with her artistry. Her warm smile and open heart brought light to everyone she touched. Service to celebrate her life will be held mid-March in Penticton. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to CNIB or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
