2012 JANUARY A 24-year-old Abbotsford woman battled for her life after ingesting ecstasy with three friends on New Year’s Eve. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman was at a home in the 33700 block of George Ferguson Way when she became unconscious and unresponsive.

This was the second ecstasy overdose in Abbotsford in less than two weeks.

Cheryl McCormack, 17, died Dec. 22 after having taken ecstasy with three other friends at a sleep-over on Dec. 19.

A strong gas-like smell reported in the Auguston area of Abbotsford was attributed to an oil spill at the Kinder Morgan tank farm facility on Sumas Mountain.

Oil was discovered in a tank containment area. The spill was contained on the property.

Workers placed foam on the oil and vacuumed it up. Local residents reported experiencing headaches and nausea due to the strong smell, and students at nearby Auguston elementary were kept inside for part of the day.

After a long debate, a divided council voted to permit Playtime Gaming, which runs Chances Community Gaming Centre on Peardonville Road, to more than double its current allotment of slots.

The number was raised from 125 machines to a maximum of 275.

Last year, the city received more than $900,000 from slot machine revenues. It is expected to pass the $1 million mark next year.

Teachers, students, parents and administrators tried to determine how certain activities such as grad would be affected following the provincial teachers’ vote to pull participation in all extracurricular activities.

Upwards of 2,300 young athletes from across the province descended on the Fraser Valley, as the BC Summer Games opened.

Surrey hosted the bulk of the multisport festival, but Abbotsford’s Albert Dyck Park was the venue for towed watersports (water-ski, wakeboard and barefoot). Fiftythree athletes from Abbotsford qualified to participate in the Games, and many more local coaches, officials and volunteers were involved.

Follow Washington example The federal government is bent on pushing medical marijuana grow operations out of residential homes.

Crime and safety – home invasions, faulty wiring and mould – are the main reasons, and the plan has the backing of fire chiefs in B.C. But Health Canada has said that the proposed legislation, which would regulate medical marijuana grow ops and push them to industrial or agricultural areas, where they would be subject to inspections, will drive up the purchase price.

Would that not fuel illegal grows and trade, similar to what occurs now?

Wouldn’t that nullify any changes to eliminate safety risks?

Part of the plan is to let Health Canada medical possession and grow licences expire in 2014.

They will, in future, be more difficult to acquire, which is good, as some seem to have fallen into hands that can’t resist growing more than their licences

permit, and selling to people other than those who need it for medicinal purposes.

What if, under the new regulations, some who do need it for that reason can’t afford to buy from newly licensed growers?

Who benefits then?

The federal government’s plan seems only to serve those who can afford to establish commercial grow op businesses, and put those who subvert the process into prison.

Why not regulate, license and disclose small grows in homes, window-silltype operations for personal, medicinal use? Why not follow Washington and Colorado, and just legalize recreational use?

Clearly there is much money to be made in marijuana, and in Canada, we’re wasting way too much money and time trying to curb what is beyond the control of authorities.

Other Hand Leading up to, and following, the Mayan Miscalculation of December 21 (or rather “our” interpretation of a bunch of hieroglyphs carved in stone), the television was inundated with “disaster” and “doomsday” programs that despite any interpretation indicated that no matter what we can do the end, as they say, “is nigh”.

I will admit that the History Channel’s extensive coverage of all sorts of doomsday scenarios were helpful insights into both our past and, the Mayans aside, our potential future.

However, one of the programs that I don’t buy into is the ‘Doomsday Preppers’ philosophy, regardless of its surprisingly huge audience. In the event you don’t watch this program, it details the preparations individuals and families are making to protect themselves against

the chaos of an apocalypse.

There are interesting differences between Canadians who are preparing and those in the U.S. A guy in Canada has buried 42 school buses and has offered an open invitation to anyone to “come on down” when disaster strikes.

Americans on the other hand, clad in camo gear, of course, appear more concerned with having enough ammunition to fend off the remaining population.

I really don’t have a problem with people preparing to deal with disaster.

In fact it makes sense, since there is the possibility of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes or the North Koreans zipping off a nuclear-tipped rocket aimed at points to the south of us.

Most of the apocalyptic events, save the bomb, are survivable if you take reasonable care in laying aside a supply of food and water, and knowing how to hunt and fish etc. I will admit however, that in some instances one would only be delaying the inevitable though the will to survive is an impulse difficult to subdue.

Unfortunately, in showcasing many of the efforts of “preppers”, the producers of the show tend to reduce the examples

of how people “prepare” down to the lowest common denominator … in other words, for utter dummies. Either that, or the preppers portrayed in the show are themselves stupid. For example, recently three members of a family are “camped” in their underground shelter

– inexplicably mom was left upstairs with a gun to deal with interlopers – and prepared dinner by heating a single can of food on a little gas stove.

No pots? Then, they handed the can around (not hot?), each eating with one of those handy-dandy boy scout contraptions that contains knife, fork, spoon, cork screw and a veritable cornucopia of semi-useful tools. We must assume the show’s producer felt that things simple like ordinary spoons and plates didn’t

capture the ‘edginess’ of the simulated situation.

Regrettably, Doomsday Preppers isn’t the only ‘staged and scripted’ program on the somewhat misnamed “History” channel.

Mountain Men, which at the outset appeared to have an outdoorsy appeal, quickly degenerated into a program that I now only occasionally watch to seek out the ridiculous anomalies … like the guy who has someone else sight in a rifle, which was entirely different from the one he used, then complains it ‘misfired’, which it didn’t … he just missed what he was shooting at.

Another ‘star’ on this completely contrived program, who lives in the Montana wilderness, discovers in mid-winter he’s almost out of firewood (maybe he should watch Doomsday Preppers in his spare time) and then heads into the bush, only to return with enough wood to fill a wheelbarrow, all the while bogusly obsessing about wolves and grizzly bears.

An Abbotsford man who was charged this year after posing online as a landscaper and hiring two teenage boys to do yard work had also been making plans to meet up with a 15-yearold California youth, Crown counsel alleged Dec. 20 in court.

Sylvia Domaradzki said the new information had recently been presented to the Crown, and she wanted to increase her sentencing recommendation for Jeffrey Goddard, 22.

Domaradzki had previously sought a sentence of 120 to 150 days. She is now recommending an additional 30 days.

Goddard was scheduled for a sentencing hearing Dec. 20 in Abbotsford provincial court, but the matter has been adjourned until Jan. 24.

Goddard previously served more than a year in prison after pleading guilty to contacting eight youths – ages 12 to 16 – over Facebook and on the phone, while he posed as a police officer, a teenage girl and a TV producer in 2010.

He was convicted of invitation to sexual touching, communicating via a computer to lure a child, impersonating a police officer, and two breach charges.

Goddard was released from prison in February of this year. He was charged in August with four counts of breaching his probation – and

later pleaded guilty to two of the charges – after he created another fake persona on Facebook, this time a landscaper known as “Ryan Martin Stewart.”

Goddard had hired two boys to do landscaping work at his residence in Abbotsford where he rented a room in the same home as Donald Bakker, who previously served a 10-year sentence for sexually assaulting seven girls in Cambodia, as well as Vancouver sextrade workers.

The boys who Goddard had hired were eating lunch in his bedroom when they saw him using a computer.

Domaradzki said

further investigation has revealed that Goddard had apparently begun communicating on Aug. 1 with a 15-year-old boy in California. Two days later, they were “in love,” she said.

Domaradzki said a number for a hotel was allegedly found in Goddard’s cellphone records from that time. She said a message from Goddard to the boy stated, “I’m going to try my hardest to come and get you.”

Conditions of Goddard’s probation included that he not access the Internet, not have contact with anyone under the age of 18, and not establish or maintain a social media website.

Nick is survived by his wife Carol, his three kids Alan (Kelly), Paul (Colynn), and Michelle (Geoff), and his older sister Rose. A Celebration of Life will take place at Bradner Hall on January 5th, 2013 at 2:00 pm.

Ray passed away in the Abbotsford Hospital. He was one of the pioneers of Abbotsford and served his community as a volunteer Firefighter, School Bus Driver and a Life Member of the Abbotsford Curling Club. Pre-deceased by his parents Paul & Augustine and sister Irene Thompson and his daughter Carolyn Jansen. Survived by his wife of 68 years, Lou, daughter Linda Kirton (Daryl) and son Doug (Cindy) Boury and sonin-law Donald Jansen and their families. 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, niece Jerry Kingdon and sister-in-law Marion Hocking.

It is with sadness the family of Graham Wainwright announces his passing on December 20, 2012 in Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He first moved to Abbotsford in October 1980 with his family.

For his whole life he was focused on supporting others in the community. Professionally he worked for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for 36 years. As a volunteer he supported many organizations including the Clearbrook Lions Club, Gladwin Heights United Church, Cultus Lake United Church Camp and the Abbotsford International Airport. Graham was predeceased by his wife Frances Wainwright and sister Wendy King. He leaves behind his son Rob (Tammy), daughter Ruth (Greg), daughter Alison (Donald), granddaughter Frances, grandsons Frederick and Lucas, brother Jim (Laura), brother-in-law Dick, nieces, nephews and countless friends. A memorial service was held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Gladwin Heights United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gladwin Heights United Church (www.gladwin heightsunitedchurch.org) or Cultus Lake United Church Camp (www3.telus.net/clucc).
