Parks and rec hosts its annual New Year’s Eve celebration

Get ready for a party in the “streets” at Finale 2012, the annual New Year’s Eve celebration at Beban Park. Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture’s annual event features a Mardi Gras theme. The party starts at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 with swimming, games and crafts at the Beban pool and glow in the dark skating at Frank Crane Arena. Somenos Drum Line from Duncan will kick off entertainment on the mainstage at 6:30 p.m., followed by children’s musical entertainer Ian Johnstone. Greg Ladret, MC for the night, will entertain the crowds with his magical illusions, followed by circus artist Jake West, and the first New Year countdown of the night at 8 p.m. For the later crowd, VIBE dance group Footclan performs freestyle and choreographed dance routines, followed by music with Johnstone and more circus art. Entertainment wraps up with Jayden Holman as he rocks until 10 p.m. and into the final countdown. Tickets are available at Beban Park for $25 per family (maximum of 4); $10 per person; children two and under are free. For more information, please call 250-756-5200. Brechin Lanes five-pin bowling centre is also hosting New Year’s Eve parties, from 5-7 p.m. and 8:30-10:30 p.m. Families can rent a lane for $99, which includes glow bowling for up to six people, plus pizza, pop and prizes. The parties are alcohol-free, but include a ginger ale toast that night. To bowl a few strikes before the clock strikes midnight, please call Brechin Lanes at 250753-2341.
