The Tri-Cities sent six athletes to the London 2012 Olympic Games and three of them came home with medals: a bronze for Coquitlam cyclist Jasmin Glaesser in the women’s team pursuit; a bronze for Coquitlam soccer player Brittany Timko; and a silver for Port Moody rower Krista Guloien.

Coquitlam wrestler Haislan Garcia competed in his second Olympics and finished in seventh place in the men’s freestyle 66 kg division while Coquitlam gymnast Brittany Rogers vaulted the Canadian team to a fifthplace finish — a national best. And Coquitlam BMXer Tory Nyhaug took 18th place (a twotime Canadian champion, Nyhaug competed in London two months after doctors removed his spleen). Also at the

The Centennial secondary graduate’s human rights work (which she blogs about at goneadventurin.wordpress. com) has taken her to the most impoverished areas in Mexico (where she was with migrant youth) and in India (with Made By Survivors, a non-governmental organization that helps women who have survived human trafficking to become artisans).

This fall after completing her master’s degree, Lee returned to Asia to work with the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre in Kathmandu, Nepal. In September, in a column for The Tri-City News, Lee wrote: “I will have

five months to continue learning about human trafficking, hopefully while standing picturesquely in Mount Everest’s shadow, with a momo (famous Nepali dumpling) in hand.”

A former Gleneagle secondary student now with the College of the Atlantic, in Maine, Anjali Appadurai made waves last December when she delivered a powerful youth statement about climate change at a United Nations conference in South Africa. This year, the Indian-born, Coquitlam-raised woman continued with her campaign, speaking out about humanitarian issues and environmental politics — including at the UN convention in Doha, Qatar — as part of a youth group called Earth in Brackets. She has also been involved with the Canadian Red Cross and SustainUS.

he sad story of a Port Coquitlam teen reaching out for help on the internet after being repeatedly bullied — and later killing herself following a hospital stay for severe depression — touched millions of people around the world. Amanda Michelle Todd, 15, was a Grade 10 student at CABE in Coquitlam when, earlier this year, she posted a video onYouTube in which she used flash cards to tell about her struggles. Her suicide prompted immediate reaction from Premier Christy Clark — a longtime anti-bullying campaigner and champion of Pink Shirt Day — as well as community leaders in the Tri-Cities and Maple Ridge, where she previously went to school. More than 55,000 people — many of them from across Canada and the United States — flocked to Coquitlam in late August for a chance to see 48 of the top 50 players on the current LPGA money list compete. The 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open Pro Am took place at the Vancouver Golf Club (VGC) on Austin Avenue over four days, an event that also raised $1.8 million for the BC Children’s Hospital. The tournament was a nailbiter, with the reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Lydia Ko besting such pros as Stacy Lewis, Inbee Park, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin. At 15 years old, Ko became the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history.

Hansen, who had previously conquered it in 1987 and for the 10th and 20th anniversaries, had been training for Thermal — a 1.9 km route that rises to 532.4 ft. above sea level — for four months. A week before his historic fourth climb, Hansen, 54, told The Tri-City News: “In my approach to the hill this time, my goal is to complete the journey successfully but not break a world record.

The hill seems insurmountable but the only way you do it is you put your hands on the wheels and you push hard — one stroke at a time.”The climb was part of a celebration relay that passed through 127 Canadian communities before ending in Vancouver on May 22.

Prior to the national jaunt with 7,000 “difference makers,” Hansen visited several countries that he had wheeled through prior to 1987 and his foundation created partnerships in Israel, Jordan, Australia and the United States.

The 25th anniversary tour garnered attention from more than 350 media outlets, including the Jerusalem Post, which put Hansen on the front page — the first time a Canadian story

has been given such high profile, said media spokesperson Dan Enjo.

CUP RIOTERS

Several Tri-City residents went before judges this year in connection with last year’s Stanley Cup riots, which gave Vancouver a black eye internationally following the Canucks’ loss in the playoff final in 2011. Coquitlam’s Ryan Dickinson, who was on probation during the riot, received a 17-month jail sentence in February after he admitted to trashing an unmarked police car and vandalizing a clothing store; Dickinson, who was the first person convicted in the riots, told the court he was“caught up in the moment.”Patrick Judge, a 25-year-old Port Moody resident charged with break and enter, two counts of mischief and participating in a riot, pleaded guilty in July to his crimes. And the next month,Vassili Kisselev, 22, of Coquitlam, who faced one count of participating in a riot and a break and enter charge, also pleaded guilty. In April, two young offenders from Coquitlam were also charged. As of last week, the Vancouver Police Department had recommended 1,040 charges against 315 people.

4) A 1.81 square metre portion of city land at the rear of 2919 Murray Street with Surf-Tech Industries 2009 for the purpose of storing an air compressor and air compressor tent for an annual fee of $100.00 for a two year term from April 1, 2012 to March 30, 2014.

In October, Port Moody resident Frankie Cena — who has played in musicals with Coquitlam’s Theatrix and the Lindbjerg Academy of the Performing Arts, and coaches Port Moody high school debaters — was named Mr. World Canada.The next month, the UBC business undergraduate represented the country at the Mr. World Pageant in England, where he clinched the talent title (for his rendition of Jay Sean’s Down), placed in the Top 5 in the multimedia category and made it into the Top 10 for the overall event — a first for Canada.

BOBADILLA

Daniela Bobadilla was a student at Coquitlam’s Summit middle school when she took up acting at school and with Theatrix. She performed often and, while at Port Moody’s Heritage Woods secondary, she was discovered by a talent agent and started auditioning for TV and film roles. In 2008, Bobadilla won the Port Moody Idol title at the Golden Spike Festival and later was cast as George Lopez’s daughter in the movie Mr. Troop Mom.That led the way to series of TV parts and, this year, she landed the role of a lifetime in Anger Management, starring Charlie Sheen — thanks to an introduction from Lopez.

for his solo work at the Cowal Highland Gathering, placing first in the Strathspey and Reel, second in the March and third in the Piobaireachd.

LUCIANO KWON

It’s hard to match Luciano Kwon’s voracious appetite for learning. In the last academic year, when the Coquitlam boy was in Grade 6, Kwon entered the world of debating and, with his team, scored first in a regional novice championship against 17 other MetroVancouver schools.

At the provincials, Kwon took first in the individual public speaking and debate divisions. And at the

nationals, he was ranked 12th out of 68 competitors in a division that included students in Grade 9. His ambition grew stronger and he formed a team for the Heart of Europe tournament, which took place this summer in the Czech Republic; they were pitted against 140 other students from 19 countries.The youngest person at the tournament, Kwon took fifth place in individual performance (the team was eliminated in the eighth preliminary round). Recently, the Grade 7 student won the 2012 UBC debate competition among 200 Grade 9 and 10 competitors from across the country.

Judge David St. Pierre said the Crown had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Plehanov intended to touch the girls, who were seven and eight years old at the time, in a sexual manner. His teaching career is in limbo, however. pending further review by the new Teacher Regulation Branch.

2012 YeAR in Review: The good, the bad and the ugly

After 100 years, R’view closes its doors R’view closes

Riverview Hospital closed last summer and was essentially mothballed while the province decides what to do with the 100-year-old facility.

Many are calling for a long-term maintenance plan and money to heat and look after buildings, and a Heritage Conservation Plan made public in the fall also recommended maintenance and a stabilization plan for the former provincial mental health hospital.

Riverview was also named by the Heritage Canada Foundation as one of the top 10 most endangered historic sites.

A group calling itself the Port Moody Families Against Violence called for action from Port Moody city hall in September after three gang-related shootings in the city. In May, Gurbinder Singh Toor, a 35-year-old with connections to the Dhak-Duhre

crime group, was gunned down outside the Port Moody rec complex.

The following month, Randy Naicker, one of the founders of the Independent Soldiers gang, was shot outside the Starbucks on St. Johns Street. And in September, Joseph Allan Markel, 32, was shot dead at his home n the 9000-block of Wallace Wynd in Glenayre in what police called a targeted attack.

HAY

Donald Hay, who in 1976 kidnapped 12-yearold Abby Drover and held her captive for 181 days in a bunker beneath his Port Moody garage, died in June. Hay had been serving a life sentence since February 1977 for kidnapping and forcible confinement, and an eight-year concurrent sentence for sexual interference with a girl under 14.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW: The good, the bad and the ugly

SD43 sells off surplus land School District 43 moved to try and raise capital for new and replacement buildings by selling off surplus land but was greeted with some opposition. The board of education decided not to sell a portion of Porter Street elementary school’s field but will still move ahead with the process of possibly selling land at Parkland elementary. It needs money to replace older buildings, such as Sir Frederick Banting and Minnekhada middle schools.

WALKING AWAY

Unescorted day passes were temporarily suspended at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital at Colony Farm after two patients walked away from the facility in May. At the time, authorities said that a panel of experts from outside the

hospital would conduct a more in-depth external review, which he said will likely take several months. Members of the Kwikwetlem First Nation said the number of unauthorized absences being reported at the neighbouring hospital had them concerned for their safety. In December, another man on a day pass went missing and was located in Ontario.

hristmas has come and gone and the Boxing Day sales are now in full swing. There was a time when the week surrounding Christmas Day was one of visiting friends and family, attending church and feasting.

Now, the traditional holiday of Dec. 25 is lumped in with Boxing Week or Boxing Month as retailers seek to end the year in the black and shoppers vie for the best deals.

It’s a cliche to complain about the commercialization of Christmas, and Christian traditions need not be sacrosanct in a multicultural country like ours, where people of all religions celebrate the sacred at different times in the year.

While some may argue that the values of Christmas — charity, love, hope for the future — are being overtaken by avarice and consumerism, others simply acknowledge that strong retail sales during the holiday season will create jobs and economic stability.

The best one can hope for is that people acknowledge that this duality exists and take some time to protect their own mental health by sharing some good quality time with friends and family.

ome time back, some colleagues convinced me to sign up with LinkedIn, one of the (then) new buzz-wares making the rounds of the business networking crowd. I was vulnerable, having just added my face to the vast Book in cyberspace, and doing some tentative tinkering with Twitter.

If they had told me that it was corporately cool to join Digital Data Group Hug and participate in computerized croonings of “Kumbaya”at noon every day, I probably would have gone for that, too.

So LinkedIn I became. As far as I could tell, my life did not take on new meaning.

But I did begin to get messages from utter strangers who want to be LinkedIn with me.

Who are these people and why do they want

me on their lists? What do they do with these lists, anyway? Trade ’em like playing cards?

Peace in schools & transit cash M

y first wish for 2013 is that I not see a piece of turkey, a single brussels sprout or a stack of carbohydrates for a while.

Seasonal excess hits harder each year, both spiritually and metabolically.

But regardless, as we welcome a regimen of celery sticks and walking the Inlet Trail, I offer some wistful wishes for 2013.

Ever the optimist, I see the 2013 glass as half full rather than completely full, as it has been too often these last few weeks.

I hope we’ll get a new provincial government in 2013 after voters take the BC Liberals to the electoral woodshed for the spanking their political sins warrant.

I hope Adrian Dix’s NDP enjoys enough of a post-election honeymoon that they can accomplish some progressive things.

I hope they raise taxes to pay for public services instead of wheedling revenue with constant increases in fees, licenses, tolls and gambling revenues.

And I hope our provincial government in 2013 establishes a consistent, fair way to fund much-needed transportation projects so we can stop perpetually panhandling for capital funds.

I hope that in 2013, environmental

concerns and science will be as important in our pipeline deliberations as will corporate expediency.

I hope 2013 will be the year government makes peace with teachers so public schools and educators are no longer used as political footballs by governments and think tanks.

I hope 2013 sees Canada finally kill the F-35 bomber purchase. The $40-billion we save could buy a lot of peacekeeping equipment and light blue helmets.

I hope that after U.S. President Barack Obama’s reelection, 2013 sees the U.S. continue moving towards sanity by enacting meaningful gun-control measures to at least start to curb the carnage.

I also hope and officially predict that 2013 will be the year the U.S. Supreme Court finally declares gay marriage a constitutional right.

And I hope in the NewYear, the NHL can just cancel the rest of the hockey season so we don’t sully the Stanley Cup by instituting some rinky-dink mini season or shootout.

As I reread these 2013 wishes, I worry that my list misses a yearning for world peace and conquering cancer.

Maybe I should redo the list… or perhaps I’ll just make a turkey sandwich and postpone both wishes and reformation until next Tuesday.

Good luck on gun issue The Editor, A Christmas message to American people about guns: One of the unfortunate byproducts of my interest in history is that I seem to have acquired a knowledge of military tactics and strategy.

What President Barack Obama is attempting to do is admirable but apparently a military non-starter.

From what I hear in the media, there are more handheld weapons in the U.S.A. than there are citizens. To ask an armed population of that sort to stand down is like asking a leopard to change its spots.

Gen. George Patton would refuse the task out of hand. Napoleon Bonaparte would find it mildly interesting but would ask how many casualties you are prepared to accept.

If the blood of innocent children only means business as usual, then get on with the next day.

But if their sacrifice is to be remembered, let it bring about a real change of heart.

The Editor, Re. “Pharmacy loyalty program ban riles point collectors” (www.tricitynews.com).

I understand the College of Pharmacists and the B.C. health minister are considering disallowing pharmacies providing Air Miles or other reward plans on pharmacy prescriptions. The next thing would be to disallow all merchants from providing incentives even on groceries. This is an infringement on their rights and the rights of taxpayers from choosing who they wish to deal with for pharmacy requirements.

The new Port Mann Bridge is making the Fast Cat ferries look good.

Norbert Kaysser, Port Coquitlam their platform is to consider families, children and seniors. The infringement on their rights to participate in such rewards is ridiculous and does not meet the premier’s mandate.

Costs for the reward programs should be borne by the supplier of such rewards. It is doubtful that the rewards are significant but may help clients with some form of savings via rewards. The amount may purchase a coffee or over years of accumulating points, possibly some small appliance.

We need less government involvement in such matters and get on with more serious issues such as education, housing, hospitals, small business and resources, and look more at in-house savings, which should be included in the provincial mandate.

Enough is enough.

Wheelchair basketball hoops cash for its finals in Coquitlam in March Organizers with a provincial sports event happening in Coquitlam next year got a gift from the provincial government this month.

The BC Wheelchair Basketball League received a $2,500 Hosting BC grant for its finals that are taking place on March 2 and 3 at Pinetree community centre.

Since the program started, the government has doled out

$241,500 in Hosting BC grants for 64 sporting events — such as snowboarding, volleyball, canoeing, sailing, gymnastics and triathlon — in 25 communities.

The grants usually range from $3,000 to $15,000, depending on the level of competition.

Of the $2,500 grant, BC Liberal MLA Doug Horne (Coquitlam-Burke Mountain) said in a news release, “This funding is a great way to show-

case our city while promoting sport and active lifestyles across the province.

“I’m pleased we were able to help facilitate such a great event and I look forward to cheering everybody on.”

The BC Wheelchair Basketball League provides competitive opportunities for male and female (junior and adult) teams around the province.

The increase in social activities to celebrate the holidays and the New Year also means an increase in the risk that some drivers will get behind the wheel after they’ve become impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) and the BCAA Road Safety Foundation urge party goers to celebrate responsibly and make transportation arrangements ahead of time in order to get around town and arrive safely at home.

BCAA and its Road Safety Foundation also remind party hosts and businesses that the issue of impaired driving is everyone’s responsibility. And they offer tips to help keep you, your friends and family members safe on the roads this holiday season: • Plan your night out: Leave the car at home and take public transit or taxis, or arrange for a designated driver service.You can even call a tow truck company to take you and your car home. If the party is at a friend’s house, plan to spend the night and drive home the next day after the effects of the alcohol have fully worn off.

• Be a designated driver: Take turns being the designated driver and when it’s your turn, stick to beverages without alcohol.

• Be a good host: Have a variety of alcohol-free beverages, such as pop, juice, or even“mocktails”on hand. Have some of your guests agree to be designated drivers and not consume any alcohol. If you’re concerned that any of your guests are impaired, insist they take a taxi or offer the spare bed or the couch. A disagreement over safety with a friend is better than risking the alternative.

• Role model: Parents, remember your kids watch and learn from you. It’s important that you demonstrate safe and healthy driving behaviours at all times. Never drive impaired.

• Call home anytime: Young people celebrating the holidays often won’t admit that they or their friends drink or use drugs.

To them, it’s worth the risk to drive or ride with a driver who is impaired rather than deal with an angry parent. A “family contract” agrees that the kids can call home at any hour for a safe ride home.

Parents, plan a discussion with your kids about the dangers of driving while impaired.

• Drug impairment: Be aware of anyone who is impaired by something other than alcohol, whether it’s prescribed medications or illegal drugs such as marijuana, and ensure they don’t drive. Mixing alcohol and drugs can be lethal for all road users.

2012 a bad year for Canada’s environment green scene Elaine Golds It started going down last Dec.

L

ike many people, I prefer to be the eternal optimist and would like to believe that each year brings a little progress towards a more perfect and just world. This past year, however, the actions of the federal government have dashed my faith.

From the perspective of the environment, this has been an annus horribilus for Canada. It all started in December 2011, when the Stephen Harper government pulled out of the Kyoto Accord, which was intended to limit greenhouse gas emissions and help to prevent global warming; then, with the tabling of two omnibus bills in the House of Commons in March and October, the resulting repeal of progressive legislation which had effectively protected the environment in some cases, for decades, rolled Canada back into the dark ages.

Bill C-38, which passed in June, was an unprecedented so-called“budget”bill of 452 pages, which introduced, repealed or amended 70 federal laws. It repealed the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and the Kyoto Accor, and allowed for increased off-shore seismic testing and drilling. It eliminated the National Round Table on Environment and severely limited opportunities for public input into proposed new projects. It gutted the Fisheries Act by eliminating habitat protection and exempted the National Energy Board (NEB) from requirements to protect species at risk. Just in case that wasn’t sufficient, the bill also gave cabinet the authority to overrule any wayward NEB decisions. It also eliminated support for world-class research that had been conducted since 1968 in the Experimental Lakes Area near Kenora, Ont. as well as a highly respected lab in Sidney that has been conducting research into marine pollutants (this was the lab that showed our resident orcas are the most contaminated marine mammal in the world).

Hundreds of people lost their jobs. The environmental and research community was stunned.

This bill will replace the Navigable Waters Protection Act, which has protected all such waters from industrial development since 1882 with a much weakened act that will exclude 99.7% of the lakes and 99.9% of the rivers in Canada from this protection.

Strangely, the lakes that retained some degree of protection were mainly located in the Muskoka cottage country north of Toronto, where many of Canada’s millionaires have summer residences.

Additional changes were proposed to the Fisheries Act that would further weaken protection for fish

habitat. In addition, the bill weakens First Nations rights and eliminates the Hazardous Material Information Review Commission, which helps to protect Canadians from exposure to harmful toxins.

mitment and weaken environmental protection so that we can more efficiently extract oil and gas — and fatten their bulging wallets.

But there are alternatives. Consider the example of Norway: Like Canada, Norway is rich in fossil fuels, which it exports mainly to Europe. Norway is managing its wealth to the

benefit of all its citizens, however, and increasing environmental protection. When its oil and gas fields were discovered, Norway undertook extensive public consultation to determine how best these resources could be developed with full environmental protection and benefits that would accrue to all.

In 1990, its government established a petroleum fund, which equitably distributes wealth from their fossil fuel exports.

Norway is also acknowledged to be a leader in Europe with regard to legislation that protects the environment and implemented a carbon tax back in 1990.

By 2011, its carbon emissions were less than 2% above 1990 levels, in accordance with its Kyoto commitments. Under the Copenhagen Accord (2009), it has promised to further reduce net carbon emissions by 305 to 40% from 1990 levels by 2020.

Canada could certainly take a page from Norway’s book.

Instead, our federal government now appears to be taking more specific aim at the Species at Risk Act (SARA).The existing act was passed by government only in 2002 after thorough

public consultation.This fall, the minister of the environment announced the act was“ready for an overhaul”and needed to be made“more efficient.”

These statements have been taken by many people as code words to indicate government plans to substantially weaken SARA. But according to a poll released Dec. 13, Canadians overwhelmingly support a strong federal government commitment to protect species at risk.

The poll, commissioned by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, indicates that 96% of Canadians believe the federal government’s current commitment to the protection and recovery of Canada’s species at risk should be maintained or strengthened.

Thus, while I can’t say I am looking forward to what the coming year might bring, it seems 2013 will likely be a time when we will need to stand up and remind the government what the vast majority of its citizens really want.

Port Moody Foundation seeks 2013 grant requests T h e Po r t M o o d y Foundation is kicking off its 2013 granting cycle with a call for applications.

The foundation seeks letters of interest from eligible non-profit organizations needing financial support in 2013 for projects and programs that will benefit Port Moody and its residents. Grants of $500 to $2,000 may be given.

In 2012, the Port Moody Foundation provided more than $5,000 in grants to

help local non-profits fulfill their goals of serving the community.

“Non-profit organizations provide the backbone that builds environmentally, culturally and socially sustainable communities,” foundation president Robert Simons said in a press release. “We are

pleased that through our annual grant program, we can assist non-profit organizations in their work to enrich our community.”

Letters of interest should be limited to one page and outline a project or program that fits with the funding areas identified in the foundation’s mission: social, cultural, ecological and recreational.

Letters should be submitted by Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, to: Port Moody

Fox finds a way Ravens win provincial title in stunning lastminute victory

It took a fade-away jumpshot with 3.4 seconds left in the game for the Terry Fox Ravens to clinch a 75-74 victory in the AAA high school boys’ basketball provincial finals last march.

Jesse Crookes lategame heroics against the Walnut Grove Gators helped the Ravens to the club’s first title since winning back to back championships in 1993 and 1994.

“I didn’t think I’d see that last shot but I got it, I hit it,” said Crookes, shortly after last spring’s championship game. “I’m just so excited right now, words can’t describe.”

Fox was ranked No. 5 going into the tournament and had to overcome a seven-point deficit against the top-tiered Gators in front of 4,061 high school hoops fans at the Langley Events Centre.

The annual tournament belonged to Fox, which also boasted the MVP, Ryan Sclater and all-star Trevor Casey.

In the finals, Sclater had a team-high 17 points and was eight for ten when shooting from the field.

He also hauled in 11 rebounds and the Ravens in three of their four tournament games.

Casey, meanwhile, added 10 points of his own in the win and played a big role in retaking the lead when the Ravens trailed 72-63. sports@tricitynews.com

The Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs saw their quest for a Minto Cup come to an end last August after dropping two games to the Orangeville Northmen in the best-ofthree final series.

The team struggled

against the Northmen, losing 19-6 in the opening game before faltering 9-4 in Game 2 to lose the series, and their shot at a second Minto Cup in two seasons.

Orangeville dominated the four-team tournament, which included the Calgary Mountaineers and the Whitby Warriors,

going 3-0 in round-robin play and 5-0 overall. The Northmen won backto-back Minto Cups in 2008 and 2009, before Coquitlam won as hosts in the 2010 season.

In the last game of the season, the A’s managed to take a 2-1 lead after the first period, however the Northmen stormed back

to out-score Coquitlam 5-1 in the second and 8-2 the rest of the way.

Coquitlam was making its fourth straight appearance in the Minto Cup tourney, after having dominated the Delta Islanders in five games in their best-of-seven provincial final.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW: Vikings pillage provincial tourney

Perfect season for the Vikes Win over the Sun Devils caps a season of victories for Coquitlam

What do the 2012 New England Patriots have in common with the 2012 Coquitlam Vikings?

Both teams had perfect regular seasons, but unlike the Pats of the NFL, the Vikes were able to continue their success into the post-season, locking up the championship title in a win over the West Kelowna Sun Devils.

But the game did not

start off the way the Vikings had hoped.

The Sun Devils jumped out to a quick 14-8 lead before a fumble recovery put Coquitlam back in the driver’s seat.

That set Brendan Dieno up for a touchdown and another score from Moe Hassan helped the Vikings take the lead and secure the win.

The win wrapped up a season that saw Coquitlam dominate the competition, often winning games by comfortable margins.

In high school soccer match-ups in 2012, it was the Dr. Charles Best secondary school senior soccer team that showed how hard work and perseverance will eventually pay off.

To get to the finals, Best defeated Handworth and Kitsilano secondary on the first day of the tournament, then continued their winning streak with two more wins, setting the stage for the tilt against Terry Fox, which also had some strong games.
