I am a Man
Sophia’s snowflake
I am a man: remember that If we should have a time to chat. Don’t treat me like a little boy Don’t rob me of my cup of joy.
It floated on down from the sky above, and it landed on your nose like a kiss of love. It told another one to let you catch it in your hand, So you smiled and said, “let’s start a snowflake band.”
My body may be frail and old But tales I’ve got that should be told Of things I’ve tried and folks I’ve known That made a past. It’s all my own.
So this snowflake got drums tapping and bells joyfully ringing, While it also got a “snowflake choir happily singing.” It twirled you around and got you prancing and dancing with glee, and it soared so gently as you raised your head to see.
My ears and eyes may not be keen But oh – the sounds: the sights they’ve seen! Please ask about these memories The telling brings them back to me.
It built you a snowman as it’s friends gathered on the ground, then it hid behind a tree just wanting to be found. At last this snowflake swirled on closer to you in flight, and to you it whispered “sweet dreams and a very sleepful night.”
Perhaps you’ll see a little tear Because the memory is so dear. Don’t let that worry; not a bit. It’s a gift to be rememb’ring it.
-Debbie C. Rosenau
The golden grain shining in the sun The wondrous smell when rain’s begun; My wife who worked right by my side; Through thick and thin we did abide.
Remember oh Remember
The times we sat at close of day, And listened to the coyotes play. Their chorus brought a special thrill, Sometimes it seems I feel it still. We saw the birds; we heard their song. The things that brought each day along. Through many years we’d heard and seen Each day new memories we would glean. So, if you’re walking on the street, And if with me you chance to meet. Then stop a minute, if you can, But don’t foreget, I am a man. ~Betty Beaven
Snowmobile I love to venture on a trail That’s covered all in white. It’s a world of delight, Where pleasures of the ride prevail. My eager machine leaps ahead To climb a snowy hill. There is a sudden thrill, As over the snow I tread. Mounted upon my metal steed And bounding through the snow, I feast on Nature’s show; A banquet of feeling, indeed. A sense of great freedom I feel, As I gladly explore Where I’ve not gone before. Into the winter land I steal. It’s a secretive place, apart, Known only to a few; To me and, now, to you, A place that is dear to my heart.
Among the trees, I swiftly glide, Turning here, turning there; Sheer beauty everywhere, As on a magic carpet ride. It takes me to a place of charm And casts a magic spell; A land where all is well, In a place that is far from harm. There the air is fresh, crisp and clear. The snow is white and clean With a luminous sheen, Found only at this time of year. Things appear diff’rently, somehow. I feel much more alive, More eager to arrive. I will return to this, I vow. Setting aside all of my care, I take the homeward track, Knowing I will be back To see and to feel and to share. -Dwight Dodge
A man with hair of gray upon his head. Stood in a field of poppy’s red. He found the name upon the cross, That read of all his childhood loss. He thought of all the many years gone by, For this was where his father lie. A hero he was deemed to be, The father he would never see. He thought he heard his father’s voice. My son today, I do rejoice.. I see you there, in freedom; stand. Where we fought for those upon this land. For you my newborn little son and for my cherished wife. I gladly gave up all my life. For the sacred gift of liberty. For freedom is the key you see. I fought beside the allies upon the battle front. Heard the roar of enemy guns as they began their hunt. We all; I saw; did fight so brave, To take a stand, our land to save. We asked the Lord for strength to fight, In defending truth and right. I saw my brave true comrades fall, When we made the rush to meet the call. Soldiers bodies lay in victory upon the ground, the battle ore. Please remember oh remember of this terrible war, For my body lay with theirs upon that distant shore. We must always try to understand, And honour those who go to war, to defend our land, For the gift of freedom is so dear. Young and old we need to hear, The stories of war the brave did fight, To save Canadians and their right. Thank you son you came all this way, To stand in Flanders field with me this day. The man looked upon the field of crosses, And thouight of other family’s losses. He walked away with a full and thankful heart. He loved that dad, who did his part. Please remember in all you do, The men and women who fight for you. Thank you

What’s in a job
Friday, December 28, 2012 Quesnel Cariboo Observer
A
s the year draws to a close, many of us look back and think of how we’d like the next 12 months to go. It’s the season for New Year’s resolutions. Since most adults spend the bulk of their time at work, it is a common place to start when it comes to improving our future. In order to feel content and fulfilled in our lives, it helps a lot if we find our work to be both enjoyable and meaningful. A recent book by Martin Seligman, called Authentic Happiness, differentiates between momentary and authentic happiness and gives some insights into how to live life to achieve happiness by being true to ourselves. In the area of work, the book describes three kinds of situations: work as job; work as career; and work as calling. When your work is a job, you do it simply for the money you get from it. If you weren’t being paid, you wouldn’t be doing it. If your work is a career, you are concerned primarily with advancing. Your motivation comes from the potential to move forward. When work is a calling, it is something you do for the fulfillment you gain from it. Money and advancement are not primary factors for you and even if these were not present, you would continue to do the work. Obviously, work that falls into the category of calling tends to be the most meaningful and produces the most true contentment. It may not be possible for all of us to find work that can truly be labeled a calling, but this book identifies a few tips for moving closer to that goal. • Be content. • Find a cause that intersects with your strengths. • Exercise your strengths. If you focus on these sorts of questions as you think about your current work or consider a new occupation, it will help you toward work that is more meaningful to you and thus a more authentically happy place to be. – Kelowna Capital News

Revelations and resolutions
ere it is, my last column of the year. I’d like to tell you what a breeze it was to write, but stranded in a tiny hotel room with my loud, boisterous kids and nowhere to hide, it took me awhile to spit it out. My plan was to write it in private once we arrived at the in-laws for the Christmas holidays. Driving down to the coast on December 23rd, I figured we’d get there in plenty of time to visit before holing up in some corner with an iced rum and eggnog as I knocked out an article about my well-thought-out new years resolutions. But an hour into our trip after our first bathroom break, my plan took an unexpected turn when my husband started the truck, put it in reverse and the gear shift came completely unhinged from it’s socket. “Oh no,” he said looking at it, and then looking at

On A Brighter Note me. “This isn’t good. This isn’t good at all.” After waiting 95 minutes for a tow truck and discovering there wasn’t a mechanic or auto supply business in town that had the part we required, we decided to get our truck towed back to where we’d come from and drop it off at our trusted mechanic in West Kelowna. Since the driver couldn’t take all of us, Paul accompanied him for the trip with plans to fetch my little car. What’s the difference between his Ford Explorer
and probably left it in the taxi. “What a gong show,” Sam said as I searched the room, emptied my purse on the bed, and called the cab company while the pizza guy watched and waited at the door. Sam was right. It was a bit of a gong show. Here’s your wallet, Mom!” Daisy said, after finding it under a chair after the pizza man had already given up and left. “You owe me a hug now.” Daisy was right too. I did. For my last column of 2012 my plan was to write about my lofty goals for the year ahead, but right now still stuck in Merritt, all I can think of are an important few: writing a back-up column, relaxing with a drink and hugging my kids as often as I possibly can. With Paul home installing roof racks and a cargo box for the top of my bug, it started to get dark and he opted to join us the next morning while the kids and I checked into a hotel. Finding a Ramada Hotel with a fun-looking pool and slide, we lugged our bags up to the room and took a cab to the nearby Walmart to buy some bathing suits and snacks. With no swim gear available for sale, I got as close as I could with Beavis and Butt-Head boxers for my 12-year-old son and an undershirt/shorts combo for my nine-year-old daughter. Back at the hotel we ordered pizza for dinner and soon discovered that I had misplaced my wallet

Skating in a Winter Wonderland
Twin Arena dresses in pine boughs and glitter for the season The Twin Arena’s went all out last weekend to join in on the Christmas season by making Rink One into a winter wonderland. With a forest of pine trees, a Santa’s sleigh slide and a hockey rink at the far end, the arena felt like a the inside of a snowglobe. Children could also enjoy painting on the ice’s surface with paints, which they took to with abandon, covering the end of the rink with all sorts of designs. Jonas Gagnon photos

PLAN NUMBER 2-3-706 THREE-BEDROOM FAMILY HOME
A porch, a patio and a sundeck offer a range of options for outdoor living in this attractive three-bedroom family home. Just off the foyer, on the ground floor, french doors lead into the study, where an attractive window alcove provides the ideal spot for a quiet read. This room also has a cupboard, usable for either home-office files or as a clothes closet, if an extra bedroom is needed. Stairs lead up to the second floor, where the great room complex stretches from the front to the back of the house. Multiple windows, sliding glass doors and glass blocks in the kitchen will ensure the whole area is bathed in natural light. The great room itself has a fireplace and an unusual box vault ceiling that will add a touch of elegance. The spacious breakfast room opens on to a partly covered sun deck at the back of the house. This is the ideal spot to enjoy outdoor meals during the warmer months, and the covered area will accommodate year-round grilling. Arranging the bedroom furniture in the large master suite will be easy, thanks to the boxed-out window at the front. The plan includes an alternative, slightly larger, layout for the ensuite bathroom. The main MAIN FLOOR PLAN 1494 SQ. FT.
