BC Hydro is optimistic it will receive approvals for its upgrade of John Hart Dam generating station in the spring.

Provincial government and BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) approvals for the John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project could be in place as early as February and that means preliminary work could begin in March.

BC Hydro’s Stakeholder Engagement spokesman Steve Watson tells the Mirror “BC Hydro looks to get the official project green light by spring with the BC Parks Boundary Adjustment and the BCUC approvals. Those could come as early as February.

“BC Hydro will be undertaking some early construction works to prepare the site for the major construction work beginning towards the end of the summer.

This early work may start around March and mainly include trail, access road and parking modifications.”

Watson says BC Hydro will announce the winning team from one of the three competing teams this summer, with a community business open house to meet that team to be arranged soon after.

Construction would then begin in late summer and last for about five years.

The estimated cost of the proj-

ect is between $1 billion and $1.2 billion. The plan is to replace the three 1.8 km long pipelines with a two km tunnel eight metres in diameter. A replacement generating station will be constructed beside the existing station. A new water intake at the John Hart Spillway Dam and a new water bypass facility will also be built.

The existing station will continue to operate during the construction phase, and then transfer operations to the new facility.

“Two specialized site trailers will be positioned on site to accommodate some of the day programs presently being delivered at the Sunshine Wellness Centre and provide a large project meeting room for all clinical teams associated with the project throughout the design and development stage of the project,” Sparrow says.

During the construction phase starting in early 2014 and extending to the spring of 2017 there will be between 250 and 400 workers on the site for the life of the project.

“The opportunities for all of the local trades people, suppliers, service companies, restaurants and hoteliers is going to be absolutely phenomenal,” Spar row says.

“The first thing these construction companies look for is local trades, local service companies and local suppliers.

“They can’t access trades

people in other parts of the country and bring them in because they are busy working too.

“Everyone’s busy. We want to work closely with the high schools, the college. We want to talk about apprenticeships programs and opportunities with the trades associations.”

An RFP for the actual construction and operation of the two hospitals will be issued early in 2013.

Sparrow says throughout 2013 public meetings will continue every two to three months “to share our progress with all communities associated with the project.”

BC Hydro is working towards having the first replacement generating unit in-service by 2017.

The utility forecasts about 2,000 person years of work during the construction period or about 400 person years of work each year over five years.

The size of the workforce and the work requirements will not only change from year to year, but also during the year. Year two of construction is expected to see the highest level of activity at nearly 500 person years of work.

Watson says: “As is common with projects of this size, BC Hydro has already been investing in the community before construction begins.

This ranges from all the baseline studies for the upcoming environmental assessment, to First Nations education and training courses.

“BC Hydro, the Campbell River and District Chamber of Commerce, Vancouver Island Construction Association and Vancouver Island Economic Alliance have been collaborating to provide good two-way communication on BC Hydro’s procurement strategy and potential economic opportunities. This has resulted in the Chamber’s major projects web portal site to cover all aspects of the economic awareness and opportunities of the John Hart project. It provides the forum for businesses and suppliers to register within a database,” Watson says.

Homeowners should benefit from construction boom BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

In 2013 Campbell River Mayor Walter Jakeway wants City Hall to streamline its regulations governing secondary suites so that the community’s homeowners can benefit from the current construction boom.

“We need to approve secondary suites better. People should have an easier ability to have rental suites in

their houses.”

Jakeway says not enough people are benefitting from the building boom.

“We need to house an awful lot of construction people coming to town. Having more secondary suites is a way to distribute the wealth through the community if workers are paying living accommodation throughout town,” he says.

The mayor says the mayor projects con-

tractors are not building construction camps and that translates into rental opportunities for many homeowners. He says he has requested a report from staff on what is standing in the way of readily establishing more secondary suites.

“These suites still need to meet the building code requirements, but right now it is an awkward process. It is essential that early in the New Year we get

on with it.”

As far as the scope of the boom is concerned, the mayor has compiled a list of more than 20 projects completed, underway and pending. They include everything from the re l o c at i o n o f t h e Mazda dealership and the completion of the Rotary Splash Park to the beginning of work on the new hospital and the John Hart Dam reconstruction project in 2013. Still, he says,

not all sectors of the community are benefiting.

Jakeway says most of these projects are unfolding independent of anything the city is doing to promote growth such as advertising Campbell River’s merits in the broader marketplace.

Rivercor p notwithstanding, “formal economic development is not happening,” Jakeway says.

The mayor also says

many taxpayers still find their dealings with City Hall to be annoying and frustrating, but he adds that changes introduced in 2012 are making it possible for more citizens to have a voice.

He points to the fact that the first half hour of every budget meeting is set aside for public input.

“We must listen to and respect our taxpayers,” he says, “they are our shareholders, not

the enemy.”

Jakeway also believes taxpayers should feel confident that “despite the turmoil on council in 2012 that the city’s needs were met and everything that needed to be done got done.”

Moving into 2013, he says, the city’s enviable debt load is only $2.5 million, the Community Centre debt is paid off, council is more efficient and its committee system is leaner.

Heading into 2013 the BC Salmon Farmers Association says it is time the industry was accorded its own federal legislation as opposed to just passing mention in the Bank Act. Association Executive Director Mary Ellen Walling also says it is no longer acceptable for her members to endure the uncertainty of surviving on year-to-year fishing licenses when “we’re not even a fishery.”

2010 the Department of Fisheries and Oceans started granting the sector one year fishing licenses. One of the things we are looking for is obviously longer term licenses. It’s just not acceptable to have millions and millions of dollars invested in the industry for one year fishing licenses.

“There’s one mention of aquaculture in federal legislation and that’s in the Bank Act. Premier Christy Clark told me that was so they could tax us.

She meant it as a bit of a joke, but I actually think she’s correct.

Walling adds: “The demand for seafood is so great if we were to try and access seafood only from the wild we would very quickly decimate those populations. Over 50 per cent of the world’s wild fish populations are in difficulty. It is an astounding figure.

Behavior Changes in Senior Pets As with people, it’s not unusual for older pets to develop behavioural problems. While it’s easy to blame these behaviour changes on age alone, they can also indicate underlying medical problems. Make sure your elder pet visits their veterinarian as recommended, and that you call the veterinarian to discuss any noticeable changes in their behaviour.

These can be key indicators of underlying medical issues that should be addressed.

Behaviour problems can result from changes in your pet’s routine, illness, disease, senility, or cognitive dysfunction. Any change in lifestyle for a pet can be stressful, regardless of age, and as your pet gets older, she is less equipped to adapt to changes in her environment. Sometimes, simple life changes such as the introduction of a baby to the house, a new family member, or the absence

of an individual can drive behaviour change.

Medical and degenerative problems can also cause a behaviour change in your pet, since changes within the major organ systems can inuence behavior in many ways. Diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, and endocrine disorders all inuence your pet’s behaviour and personality.As your pet ages, their hearing and sight are affected.

Often, this inuences their ability to react, sometimes causing him to become fearful. Additionally, pets, like people, can become arthritic, which causes discomfort and can lead to irritability and a change in attitude.

Your pet’s brain is also susceptible to age-related changes.

Degenerative processes in the brain can impact your pet’s personality, memory, behaviour and even their ability to learn. Your pet

may show varying degrees of cognitive function, from minor changes to signiďŹ cant senility.

Symptoms to Watch for in Your Senior Pet Remember, sometimes small changes in behaviour can be an early indicator that your friend is in pain, is ill, or has a degenerative 7x14 disease. ommunity businesses and organizations continue to step up to help keep the annual New Year’s Eve event at Strathcona Gardens a free, fun, family event.

Campbell River’s Daybreak Rotary Club most recently helped out – with a contribution to fund children’s entertainers: Campbell River Animal Parties, Jim Chisholm and face painters.

Other sponsors include McDonald’s, Superstore, Thrifty’s, Save On Foods and Quality Foods, who will all contribute free snacks for the families in attendance.

The Family New Year’s Eve event is one of the most popular events over the holiday season with hundreds of families attending each year.

Thanks to community support, the event has been able to grow with the community’s interest. In addition to swimming, skating and pond hockey, new activities include face painting and hair feathering, and roving fitness instructors to get people moving throughout the night.

Plus, this year’s event will incorporate the Chinese zodiac’s year of the snake, with interactive shows featuring snakes, reptiles and other animals.

“We are thrilled with the amount of support we have gotten from community businesses and organizations,” states Kevin Elmore, recreation and culture programmer. “It helps us provide an amazing night of family entertainment free of charge.”

Black Creek Community Centre to get upgrade The Black Creek Community Centre is getting an upgrade thanks to the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic

Diversification, announced the federal funding for the Black Creek Community Association. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and longterm prosperity in our communities,â&#x20AC;? said Duncan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By improving facilities such as this, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for

Canadians.â&#x20AC;?

Federal funding of $17,095 will go towards improvements to the Black Creek Community Centre.

Project activities will include upgrades to the washrooms, main hall and kitchen; the installation of disability access mechanisms for main doors; and the replacement of ceiling panels.

These improvements

are important for Black Creek, as the Community Centre is used by all community members for a variety of purposes including meetings, administration, and gatherings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Black Creek Community Centre (BCCA) has been an integral part of our rural community for well over 50 years,â&#x20AC;? said Facilities Director Jerry Griffin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a

All the best to our readers in 2013 Well, it’s bare under the Christmas tree now and the leftover turkey dishes are showing up on dinner tables around the Campbell River area.

We say: Let’s Some will have said goodbye to loved ones or will be saying so soon. celebrate what Christmas is over but the holidays makes living here continues as now we gear up for New Year’s celebrations. In many special ways, we go into a little slumber in the early part of January. At least it seems to after the hectic pace of pre-Christmas preparations. We at the Campbell River Mirror hope you had a fantastic

Christmas and we wish you all the best in the New Year. If your New Year’s Eve celebration involves the consumption of alcohol, we hope you do it responsibly and make plans for alternate means of getting home. Make it fun and safe when you ring in the New Year.

Then, when things have quietened down, give some thought to the year ahead. It promises to be a momentous one in the Campbell River area as two massive projects get underway and spur a sense of optimism. This region has spent the last few years holding tight after a series of economic gutpunches. We rolled with those punches quite well

and we’ve learned to live with the changes. Through it all, we’ve kept close to our heart the things that make living in this region a blessing: a beautiful environment, a mild climate, friendly and generous people, loving families. All those reasons keep us here despite the challenges. Many of us have made sacrifices and adaptations that allow us to still live here. It’s a price worth paying. Because despite the difficulties, we have not seen a mass exodus of people. Let’s continue to celebrate the things that make it pleasant to live here and use those as the theme music of our march to a bright future.

Say yes to chickens I fully support the idea of being able to raise urban chickens in Campbell River.

Keeping chickens will mean that I can be sure that the eggs my family eats come from healthy, happy animals, unlike the cheap mass-produced eggs in the grocery stores which come from hens kept in horrible conditions (tiny cages, in the dark for all of their lives, feathers pecked out). It’s a great way to teach my nieces and nephew where food comes from.

Sensible restrictions on chicken-keeping in the city like not allowing roosters and minimum yard sizes per hen would reduce noise and potential smells and, I’m sure, would be a part of any city bylaw as they are in other cities which allow chicken-keeping.

My backyard is not an oasis of tranquillity – it is full of traffic noise from Alder. I would much rather listen to some gently clucking hens in the gaps between the traffic than my neighbour’s TV. And who knows, the neighbours might just get some free eggs...

Will gas take over as the enviro-villain of 2013?

They’re well on the way to stopping the expansion of oil exports to Asia.

Now will B.C.’s American branchplant environmental machine turn on natural gas?

A couple of weeks ago I described the dispute between the Haisla Nation and the rest of the Coastal First Nations group over the pioneering of liquefied natural gas development on Haisla territory at Kitimat.

Powerful chiefs of the Heiltsuk, Gitga’at, Haida and others in the socalled Great Bear Rainforest oppose the idea of kicking off a new LNG export industry without extending the hydro grid to support renewable power for the region.

LNG is shaping up as B.C.’s larg-

est-ever industrial project, if it gets built. And there are signs the American-directed environmental attack is swinging to our gas boom.

Some in the Canadian media insist no such U.S. influence exists, or that it is trivial and benign. They mock federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver’s description of “foreign radicals,” pretending this applies to everyone opposed to oil pipelines.

There weren’t many reporters with me when I covered the negotiations for the Great Bear Rainforest in 2006. To the Vancouver media it was just a big forest deal up in the middle of nowhere. Along with B.C. cabinet minister Pat Bell, Coastal First Nations and forest companies,

the Sierra Club, ForestEthics and Greenpeace muscled their way to the table.

How they did so became clear in early 2007. Behind these big three eco-propaganda groups was a $60 million war chest from an obscure outfit called Tides Canada.

Another front group, as it turns out. The actual source of the money was the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, the Wilberforce Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Most made their billions in computers and software in San Francisco or Seattle. They’ve funded scientifically

suspect campaigns such as “Yellowstone to Yukon” and “boreal forest” aimed at turning more than a third of Canada into parks.

Increasingly, they are partnering with aboriginal people in B.C. and across Canada.

Some in B.C.’s major media have since grudgingly credited independent B.C. researcher Vivian Krause with filling in the blanks. She has shown that starting in 2002, these foundations began formally organizing against Canadian fossil fuel production.

“ecosystem-based” forest management, they didn’t realize they were reinforcing a blockade against oil exports.

Tides and its backers have continued to fund and create new protest groups, which are quoted as they pop up by credulous B.C. media.

Their argument against oil exports centres on the sexy but false premise that Alberta’s “tar sands” somehow uniquely threaten the global climate.

Lately, as the size of B.C.’s gas development has become clearer, the protests have started to refocus.

Now we hear dire claims about the decades-old technique of “fracking” in gas development, and previously obscure groups are springing up to protest gas projects.

Hollywood is about to gas us

with an anti-fracking movie starring Matt Damon. Previews suggest that Promised Land works the usual evil-greedy-capitalist themes, in the Avatar tradition.

ForestEthics, Sierra Club and Greenpeace, meanwhile, are campaigning against their original forest preservation deal on B.C.’s Central and North Coast.

Sustainable development solutions aren’t good for their business model. If people think a problem is solved, they stop sending money.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is surging ahead with its own shale oil and gas boom. Plans are underway for LNG exports from the U.S. to Asia.

I think 2013 would be a good year for Canada to start making its own decisions on energy development.

Woman killed in pre-Christmas car accident

A 35-year-old Campbell River woman has died from injuries sustained when the speeding vehicle in which she was riding careened out of control near the Big Rock on the Old Island Highway.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Troy Beauregard reports that police were called to the crash scene Saturday, Dec. 22.

“Upon arrival, it was determined that a southbound vehicle had lost control, crossed the centre line and struck a northbound vehicle,” Beauregard says. “The southbound vehicle then entered the southbound shoulder, contacted a power pole, became airborne and then rotated several times in the air.”

Beauregard says the woman was “ejected” from the vehicle and received serious head injuries. She was taken Campbell River Hospital, stabilized and air lifted to Vancouver for further treatment but died Monday. Another occupant of the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt and escaped uninjured.

“Police are still investigating,” Beauregard says. “Speed is considered to be a factor in the collision. Police are now assisting the BC Coroner Service with their investigation. No names are being released pending notification of next of kin. In light of this tragedy, we are urging drivers to adhere to posted speed limits, drive accordingly when weather results in deteriorating road conditions and use your seatbelts.”

Wondering what to do with that Christmas tree?

There are a number of tree chipping options for residents of the Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) region this year.

You can drop off your tree at the fire halls in Comox (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) and Courtenay (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 6.

In addition, one-day tree chipping events are being held at the City of Campbell River’s Sportsplex on Saturday, Jan. 5 and in Cumberland at the fire hall on Sunday, Jan. 6; hours for both locations is 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tree chipping events are by donation with proceeds going to support local charities.

Christmas trees that are cut in half with each half no longer than three feet in length will also be picked up on regular yard waste pick up days in Courtenay and Comox. Curbside pickup of Christmas trees for Royston residents is Thursday, Jan. 3.

You can also take your Christmas tree to the CSWM’s waste management centres in the Comox Valley at 2400 Pidgeon Lake Road, Cumberland or in Campbell River at 6700 Argonaut Road.

The waste management centres are open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The waste management centres will close at 4 p.m. on December 31 and will remain closed on New Year’s Day. No matter what disposal method you choose, be sure to remove all of the tinsel and decorations first.

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) service is a function

of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell

River, as well as a range of transfer stations and smaller waste-handling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional

District. The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.

Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announces a shift to a new system of regulated commercial producers of medical pot.

The plan could adversely affect the North Island Compassion Club, which sells medicinal marijuana and other medications such as cannabis-infused oil to help people who live with cancer and other ailments.

“There’s nothing in these new regulations that allow for compassion clubs,” said NICC manager Ernie Yacub, noting government is considering allowing nurse practitioners to prescribe medical marijuana. “They would absolutely have to do that because doctors have been the problem.

They’ve been the gatekeeper. They won’t prescribe.”

The new system, which ends government production of medical pot, is expected to come at a higher price for nearly 26,000 users authorized to possess medical marijuana.

Eliminating personal grow licences means people with limited means will not be be able to afford the medicine, Yacub said.

“They can’t buy it from these commercial producers. It’s too expensive,” said Yacub, who is encouraged that Health Canada is getting out of the licensing business. Authorities have argued home growers typically produce far more plants than required, sug-

gesting abuse of the program by licencees who sell into the illicit market.

“T he high value of marijuana on the illicit market increases the risk of home invasions,” Aglukkaq said.

“These production operations can also present fire and toxic mold hazards.”

T h e F i re C h i e f s Association of B.C. (FCABC) said the change will improve safety in residential neighbourhoods.

Yacub feels safety claims about fire and mold are “bogus.”

“This whole regulatory scheme is aimed at the law-and-order folks,” he said. “Eliminating personal grow licences makes it very difficult for people to afford the medicine.

It’s not covered by the government.”

An exception is the Armed Forces, which he notes is covered by Veteran Affairs.

The federal Ministry of Health intends to implement the system

by March 31, 2014, at which point all licences to possess or produce pot would expire.

Willow Point Splash Park construcƟon was completed in 2012 as a partnership between the City and Rotary Clubs of Campbell River, with addiƟonal funding support provided by Telus, the Campbell River FireĮghters and several other Rotary members. EARTH WEEK FILM FESTIVAL With School District 72, the City hosted the third annual Earth Week Film FesƟval in April at the Tidemark Theatre. More than 160 people aƩended the event, and $868 was raised to support local environmental iniƟaƟves. Proceeds from the evening were donated by the City’s Youth AcƟon CommiƩee to Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society, a community garden at Robron Centre and the development of an environmental bursary for a 2013 graduaƟng student. The event featured community environmental booths, student Įlms and the award-winning Įlm The Clean Bin Project, with Įlm stars Jen and Grant taking part in the discussion on waste reducƟon.

REPORTERS TRY OUT FIREFIGHTER FOR A DAY In May, the Campbell River Fire Dept. hosted FireĮghter for a Day acƟviƟes for local reporters. While the group started out smiling, walking a mile in ĮreĮghƟng work boots proved hot and heavy – and the mock challenges of Įnding a body in a smoke-Įlled building and geƫng people out of crashed cars were eye-openers. The Fire Dept. also shared informaƟon about the volume and variety of emergency calls and the extensive and ongoing training for both career and auxiliary ĮreĮghters. The Campbell River Fire Dept. supports the North Island 9-1-1 CorporaƟon, which serves 49 separate Įre departments in our region.

BIKE TO WORK WEEK 2012 ͵ CAMPBELL RIVER RANKED FOURTH IN PROVINCE Campbell River’s 627 Bike to Work Week cyclists gave Campbell River its fourth place ranking in the province – and top billing for communiƟes of a similar size!

The kilometers travelled by bike represent 4,382 kg of CO2 saved from entering the atmosphere. An averagesized car travelling 20,000 km per year will produce 4,484 kg CO2. So we saved the equivalent of the CO2 emissions from one vehicle for a whole year during BTWW. The City works with community groups and businesses to coordinate this week-long event, which includes four celebraƟon staƟons, prizes and the school/TD Friends of the Environmentsponsored Golden Wheel Challenge.

THE GOLDEN WHEEL Bike to Work Week includes a school-based compeƟƟon called the Golden Wheel Award, aimed at school children and sponsored in part by TD Friends of the Environment.

• 25 classes in Campbell River parƟcipated in the Golden Wheel Challenge.

• ParƟcipaƟng students were in Grades 1-11 from seven diīerent schools.

• In total there were 474 students (10 per cent of the Campbell River school populaƟon) in the challenge.

They travelled 10,802kms using acƟve or alternaƟve transportaƟon.

• This represents 2,506 kgs of green house gases saved.

• Prizes were awarded to recognize both the elementary and high school classes that saved the most green house gases during the week.

KIDS DAY AT DOC In keeping with an open-door policy, City departments at the Dogwood OperaƟons Center hosted an open house for pre-schoolaged children. This provided a hands-on, up-close opportunity to see City equipment at work.

PROMOTING LOCAL FOOD The City and North Island College promoted LeƩuce Grow courses on local food through a Įlm series and informaƟon on winter gardening, hydroponics, plant propagaƟon and soil. The 2013 series will oīer courses such as permaculture, planning and designing your veggie garden, edible landscaping, natural pest management and farming for proĮt. LeƩuce Grow courses support the implementaƟon of Agriculture Now – the City’s Agriculture Plan, and growing the gardening and farming community in Campbell River.

WOODSTOVE EXCHANGE PROGRAM CONTINUED Campbell River’s popular Woodstove Exchange Program saw almost 40 old smoky woodstoves replaced with cleaner burning models in 2012. With provincial support, the City provided $250 rebates to residents making the upgrade, and parƟcipaƟng retailers oīered addiƟonal rebates on many wood and gas appliances. By upgrading ineĸcient stoves, smoke and Įne parƟculate air polluƟon can be reduced by up to 90 per cent, and new appliances burn up to one-third less wood. PolluƟon reducƟon is important, especially in areas where wood smoke tends accumulate where people live and play. Since polluƟon reducƟon and fuel eĸciency are linked to good burning pracƟces, the program also involved Burn It Smart workshops with cerƟĮed professionals. The program wrapped up with a Neighbourhood Air Quality expert panel that discussed respiratory aspects of air polluƟon, measuring air quality, Įre safety and regulaƟons.

BC BIKE RACE 2012 The BC Bike Race came to Campbell River for the second year in July. This race brings 500 cyclists from all over the world to race on local mountain bike trails.

The seven-day race starts in North Vancouver, travels to Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and Įnishes in Whistler. Riders came from 16 diīerent countries including Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Belgium and Botswana. The race started in downtown Campbell River at Robert Ostler Park and included a Fire Department/RCMP escort to the Duncan Bay logging bridge and then on to the trails in the Pumphouse and Snowden Forest to cover 50.7 km of road and trails in excepƟonally wet condiƟons before Įnishing at Spirit Square. The wrap-up featured a slide show and dinner in the Community Centre, catered by local suppliers. The compeƟtors were accommodated overnight in tents at Robert Ostler Park. The following morning, aŌer a catered breakfast at the Community Centre, the compeƟtors boarded their buses and leŌ for the Powell River ferry for stage three of the race.

The 2013 event is scheduled in Campbell River on Monday, July 1. With Canada Day fesƟviƟes in the downtown area, the BC Bike Race will be moved to Willow Point Park and the Sportsplex.

FIRE SAFETY HOUSE RESTORED In July, the Campbell River Fire Department thanked sponsors who supported a much-needed renovaƟon to the Fire Safety House. The Fire Safety House is used primarily to instruct Grade 3 students on Įre hazards at home. The renovaƟon was completed mostly by ĮreĮghters – and partnerships with local businesses helped bring it back into service for use to its full potenƟal. For their commitment to community Įre safety, a recogniƟon plaque was presented to: Bob’s Flooring Canada, Camcour Vinyl Sundeck and Rail, CBS Prehung Doors Ltd., Grant Signs, Home Hardware Building Supplies, Nelson RooĮng and Sheet Metal Ltd., Phoenix Enterprises SandblasƟng and Windsor Plywood.

FORESHORE PROTECTION PLAN Many years in the making, an agreement for marine foreshore management was completed between the City and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). The agreement sets out acceptable City work in and around the marine foreshore and streamlines DFO’s review process of City work plans. Using the City’s Marine Foreshore Habitat Assessment and RestoraƟon Plan as a guiding document, projects that fall under the agreement include: soŌ shore restoraƟons that are consistent with long-term strategic planning around storm condiƟons and rising sea levels related to climate change; natural coastal processes that move gravel and wood along the shoreline; and removal/storage of gravel and wood for boat launch maintenance. The agreement is expected to shorten DFO review Ɵme from months to 10 working days. This will be especially helpful with annual boat ramp maintenance and other projects along the foreshore.

BAIKIE ISLAND RESTORATION & GRAND OPENING The restoraƟon of the Baikie Island Nature Reserve was completed in 2012. AŌer decades of industrial use, the island in the Campbell River estuary has been restored to its natural state.

A September grand opening event included interpreƟve staƟons, walking tours, and a ribbon cuƫng.

The 12-year restoraƟon project was accomplished though numerous community, provincial and federal partnerships.

RestoraƟon eīorts included the removal of invasive plant species, industrial debris and degraded soils along the centre of the island.

Improved soils were trucked in and contoured, large woody debris was placed as snags and in piles to provide wildlife habitat, backchannels and marsh benches suitable for salmon rearing were created, naƟve species were planted, and an improved central walking trail is in place. The completed restoraƟon will create an area that mimics the healthy forest around the edges of the island.

Funding for the restoraƟon was obtained from the BC Hydro Fish and Wildlife CompensaƟon Program, the Community Works Fund, Parks Parcel Tax and a variety of other funders.

CARBON NEUTRAL

In 2007, the Province introduced the BC Climate AcƟon 7x14Charter as a voluntary commitment for local governments to

demonstrate acƟon to address climate change. The City of Campbell River, like the majority of BC local governments (179 of 188), signed onto the Climate AcƟon Charter.

The City has reduced its corporate greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 12.5 per cent from 2008 levels. As of 2011, the City’s greenhouse gas emissions measured the equivalent of 1,300 tonnes of CO2. The City has met its 2012 GHG reducƟon target through building and uƟlity energy retroĮts including lighƟng, HVAC upgrades, and other eĸciency measures, solar hot water installaƟons, the Green Roof at City Hall, Ňeet upgrades and eĸciencies, introducing Įve per cent biodiesel for diesel Ňeet vehicles, and other iniƟaƟves.

Carbon neutral iniƟaƟves are almost exclusively paid for through external funding, including grants obtained from the Federal Gas Tax Fund, BC Hydro, Solar BC, the ecoENERGY II program, and others – further saving the City money on operaƟng and maintenance costs.

WE HAD A GREAT SHAKEOUT! More than 9,000 people in the Strathcona Regional District boundaries did the DROP, COVER & HOLD ON earthquake drill this October! More than 6,000 were School District 72 and 84 students and staī. Business parƟcipaƟon increased from four companies last year to 17 in 2012. CEREMONIAL SIGNING OF THE YOUTH CHARTER The City of Campbell River, RCMP and School District 72 signed the community’s Youth Charter in 2012. The vision document was developed by the City’s Youth AcƟon CommiƩee, with input from many Campbell River youth. The document contains a series of prioriƟes and commits the signatories to work together to make Campbell River more youth friendly. Focus areas include reducing the community’s environmental footprint, ensuring improved access to transit, promoƟng safety and addressing concerns such as substance use, oīering programs to ensure that youth and all ciƟzens are able to meet their basic needs pertaining to food, clothing, shelter, and educaƟon, having diverse job opportuniƟes, and a variety of other areas that promote health and well-being.

HUNDREDS ATTEND FIRE DEPT. OPEN HOUSE IN OCTOBER “Fire Hall No. 1 was crawling with kids for four hours,” says Fire Chief Ian Baikie. “There was such a demand to try out the ladder climb that we had Įre Įghters spelling each other oī, and cameras were clicking constantly.”

People took photos with Įre Įghters and tested their skill pulling hoses, climbing the 75-foot truck ladder and cuƫng apart cars. The day also included Įre safety and prevenƟon informaƟon and a barbecue fundraiser for Cameryn’s Cause.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY Campbell River RCMP and Ecole Phoenix Middle School students joined forces to put together more than 400 loot bags to be distributed throughout the community during Halloween. Thanks go to McDonald’s for their conƟnued support of crime prevenƟon eīorts – and to Crime Stoppers for the slap bracelets and glow sƟcks in each bag.

NORTH ISLAND HIGHWAY WATERMAIN UPGRADE In partnership with Capital Power CorporaƟon, the water distribuƟon network from the Hwy 19/28 intersecƟon north along Hwy 19 to Orange Point Road was upgraded in 2012. The project created a dedicated highpressure water transmission main and consolidated all water services in the area into a single distribuƟon main along the corridor. Also, two new pressure reducing valve staƟons were added to the system, which will allow for the enƟre area north of the Campbell River to be brought into a single pressure zone for increased system performance and a reducƟon in water pressure-related issues. This publicly tendered project was delivered by local general contractor Wacor Holdings Ltd on budget and on schedule.

URBAN FOREST INVENTORY COMPLETED Greenways Land Trust and the City completed a detailed urban forest inventory to catalogue the extent and health of Campbell River’s urban forest. From forested areas to street trees and neighbourhood trees, the urban forest is part of our living infrastructure that improves air quality, moderates storm water Ňows, buīers noise and wind, provides recreaƟonal opportuniƟes and Įsh and wildlife habitat, and absorbs and stores carbon. STEWARDSHIP AWARDS PROGRAM In September, outstanding environmental acƟon was celebrated with the City of Campbell River’s 11th annual Stewardship Awards in conjuncƟon with HaigBrown FesƟval on World River’s Day. A wide array of nominaƟons were submiƩed for individuals, groups, developers, business, industry representaƟves and youth whose eīorts and energy improve the health and beauty of Campbell River’s natural environment.

Areas of achievement included air quality, pesƟcide free, water/energy conservaƟon, habitat protecƟon/creaƟon, waste reducƟon and other areas of environmental excellence. In keeping with tradiƟon, the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s Community Advisor emceed the award ceremony.

CAMPBELL RIVER TOURISM BEST ON ISLAND! Teresa Davis, Tourism Manager at Tourism Campbell River and Region, was named Vancouver Island’s “Most Valuable Player” by her peers at the annual Tourism Vancouver Island ceremonies. Dave Petryk, President and CEO of Tourism Vancouver Island said: “The MVP Award recognizes an individual or a tourism business that has demonstrated a commitment to the growth of tourism through outstanding contribuƟons to Tourism Vancouver Island.” Davis has worked for Tourism Campbell River for 12 years and is a member of the associaƟon’s markeƟng board.

PROGRAMS FOR OUR YOUNGEST CITIZENS Responding to the changes in early childhood educaƟon, the City oīered a Pre-school Program and an Early Learning Program. This November, the City’s RecreaƟon and Culture Department was recognized for Early Years programming at the Campbell River Early Year’s Father Factor luncheon.

The award was presented by Success by 6 representaƟve Cheryl Jordan to Early Years Heroes of Campbell River as voted by the community. They include City of Campbell River Parks, RecreaƟon and Culture Division, Stereo Fitness, Strathcona Gardens, Coastal Eyecare and Chan Nowosad and Boates.

Each of these Heroes was recognized for the contribuƟon they make to the under-six populaƟon in Campbell River.

MASTER TRANSPORTATION PLAN APPROVED City Council approved the Master TransportaƟon Plan to address the community’s transportaƟon needs over the next 10 to 20 years. The plan provides direcƟon for improvements and changes to all forms of community transportaƟon, including a number of improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

CONNECTING WITH LOCAL BUILDERS AND DEVELOPERS In July, monthly sessions began to share ideas and informaƟon, a “cross pollinaƟon” opportunity for people associated with the building and land development industry. Both educaƟonal and interacƟve, each monthly session highlights a diīerent topic. This provides the City with feedback that allows us to beƩer serve this industry sector. It also provides value to the industry by sharing informaƟon on relevant issues aīecƟng their operaƟons.

HERITAGE RECOGNIZED In 2012, Council adopted a Heritage Program that will allow for three diīerent levels of heritage recogniƟon. CreaƟng a heritage program provides local government with a method of organizing and recognizing the community’s heritage resources. Recognizing and preserving community heritage inspires a strong sense of pride and belonging in a community and raises community awareness around local history and culture. Embracing heritage enhances tourism and community image and increases community proĮle. Along with the City’s Sybil Andrews property, the Lion’s Willow Point Community Hall is on Campbell River’s Community Heritage Register.

EXPANDING TRANSIT SERVICES The City expanded transit service hours in September with the addiƟon of evening service on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and increases in the frequency of the transit connecƟon to the Comox Valley system at Oyster River. Community transit use conƟnues to increase annually, and 2011/12 saw an increase of more than nine per cent with 630,000 rides.

RCMP TACKLES BULLYING Feb. 29 was Pink Shirt AnƟBullying Day, and the Campbell River RCMP supported the cause by making more than 300 ribbons for Police Oĸcers and staī of School District 72 to promote awareness.

The RCMP delivered the WITS program to seven of the eleven SD72 elementary schools in Campbell River. Created by the University of Victoria, this program brings together schools, families and communiƟes to help children deal with bullying, peer vicƟmizaƟon and to encourage adults to respond to children’s requests for help.

WITS stands for: Walk Away, Ignore, Talk it Out and Seek Out Help. A WITS colouring contest awarded three students with a $50 giŌ cerƟĮcate from Walmart as prizes.

Middle and high school students help deliver the program so younger students understand that bullying can happen to anyone, even older youth. Timberline Secondary School has a parƟcularly acƟve advocacy group of 40 students who have made several school presentaƟons about bullying.

The Campbell River Detachment has been thanked by the WITS coordinator for the past year’s eīorts, which have been recognized as far away as OƩawa.

Before the 2012 school year ended, teacher Adria Glessn, parent Terri Cox, students Ben Lowe, Haley Wingert, Dean Ciarniello and Holly Crosby, and principal Joanne Crawford, Courtenay singer/songwriter Keisja Cox and Constable Krista Wallis met with Campbell River arƟst Jill BanƟng, who created an image that illustrates what WITS represents. Crime PrevenƟon oĸcers have also shared informaƟon on both anƟ-bullying and internet safety at a number of Skills for Life classes, at middle schools, Carihi Secondary, the Robron Centre, the Special Olympics, several Girl Guide and Sparks meeƟngs and to members of the Detachment. Plans are in place to share this informaƟon at Timberline, and Crime Stoppers is providing $500 to be used for two separate awards for secondary students who have displayed RCMP core values Each day, several bullying type Įles are reported to the RCMP, and with more people coming forward, more receive help.

SUSTAINABLE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN ADOPTED The City of Campbell River adopted its Sustainable Oĸcial Community Plan (SOCP) in February.

The SOCP was created with input from more than 1,500 community members. The SOCP is the principal policy document that guides Campbell River’s development, and includes a 50-year vision for the community. The SOCP contains prioriƟes related to climate change and energy use; protecƟng the natural environment and local ecosystems; local economic development and workforce skills; shelter and food security; community idenƟty and culture; water, health and solid waste management; and social well being.

WE TALKED PARKS! The 2012 Strategic Parks Plan update included open houses to meet with dozens of diīerent user groups and a community survey to gather broader feedback.

A total of 644 people took the Ɵme to answer survey quesƟons. The comments and suggesƟons will help guide Campbell River parks development over the next Įve years. Highlights from the public survey responses include a willingness to conƟnue invesƟng the annual Parks Parcel Tax ($50-$75 per property) in parks system improvements and further development. The public also expressed support for parks maintenance and beauƟĮcaƟon, with many comments focused on the importance of a well-maintained community as an economic driver for aƩracƟon and retenƟon of businesses and residents.

Higher-ranked project prioriƟes idenƟĮed by the public included: arƟĮcial turf Įeld and clubhouse at Robron Park; waterfront improvements and park development along the Seawalk; change house at the new Splash Park; compleƟon of the Greenways Loop from Maryland Road to Jubilee Parkway.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE As part of RestoraƟve JusƟce Week in November, the Campbell River RestoraƟve JusƟce program hosted a video screening of “PlanƟng the Seeds” – showing how community jusƟce forums can help people decide at a local level how best to resolve certain criminal maƩers.

In the Campbell River, RestoraƟve JusƟce is an RCMP-based program supported by the City that is an alternaƟve to the court system in certain circumstances.

NOON HOUR FITNESS A HIT! With Įve chances a week to squeeze in a workout over lunch, Zumba, X-Fit, kickboxing – now Core& More – and two yoga classes drew exercisers of all ages in 2012. Yoga proved to be incredibly popular with 25 to 35 people aƩending each Ɵme. The other three classes aƩract up to 20 parƟcipants each Ɵme. Classes resume from 12:10-12:50 p.m. the week of Jan. 7, 2013.

UPWARD MOMENTUM FOR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT Target Store: major internal and external renovaƟons and building façade will be customized with a mariƟme architectural moƟf.

“Berwick by the Sea” will be a six-storey reƟrement building downtown oīering a variety of suite opƟons from studio to two-bedroom suites.

Seymour PaciĮc Developments is construcƟng a new building for its corporate head oĸce on St. Ann’s Road with space for more than 100 employees. The contemporary west coast architecture will be an impressive cornerstone for downtown.

A new 47-unit apartment building was approved and is currently under construcƟon on the corner of MerecroŌ and Dogwood streets, an important residenƟal element within walking distance to nearby ameniƟes.

Timberline Village: a new commercial development at Hilchey and Dogwood streets with 2,750m2 of shopping area will have a west coast architectural theme and be well-appointed for pedestrians.

PROJECTS FUNDING FOR NEW WATER INTAKE AND UPDATED WATER SYSTEM PLAN The City secured 75 per cent funding (up to $12.5 million) from BC Hydro for a new drinking water intake and water supply main. The City’s current water supply comes directly from BC Hydro’s penstocks, which are to be removed as part of the John Hart GeneraƟng StaƟon upgrade project. The future water intake will provide City water directly from John Hart Lake and community water supply infrastructure will be independent of BC Hydro operaƟons.

NORM WOOD ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE UPGRADES Detailed design work for upgrades to the City’s sewage treatment facility was started in 2012. Improvements at Norm Wood Environmental Centre will address operaƟonal, capacity, redundancy and regulatory issues. The proposed upgrades include a new inŇuent screen, grit chamber, a third secondary clariĮer and aerobic digester modiĮcaƟons/expansion. Work is to be phased over the next few years with the Įrst phase scheduled for 2013.

EXPANDED LAND BASE AT NORM WOOD ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE A project to expand the area where residue from wastewater treatment can be applied opened a 13.5 hectare site next to the current site. All permits are in place to meet environmental regulaƟons. To compensate for wetland removal, a new wetland area was created to help retain producƟve habitat in the Casey Creek watershed. The project minimizes costs associated with disposal and was delivered under two separate contracts publicly tendered and awarded to local contractors Five Star Aggregate Ltd. and Upland ExcavaƟng Ltd. All works were completed on budget and on schedule.

UPDATED WATER SYSTEM AND PROTECTION PLANS The City’s long-term water system plan was updated in 2012 to guide the development of the community’s water supply system and idenƟfy improvements needed for future growth and water demand according to regulatory requirements.

The City’s Drinking Water Source ProtecƟon Plan update was also iniƟated in 2012. This plan idenƟĮes exisƟng and future risks to water quality and strategies to address risks. Extensive outreach and consultaƟon has occurred with stakeholders, regulatory agencies and watershed user groups. The plan is expected to be completed early in the new year.

IMPROVED WATER SERVICE FOR CITY’S SOUTH END A pressure reducing valve (PRV) staƟon installed at Rockland Rd. and Alder St. in 2012 will provide a criƟcal control component to allow the water system serving the south end of the City to beƩer use exisƟng storage capaciƟes and reduce the eīect of peak demands on the transmission system. The result: more consistent delivery of water service for all areas south of Rockland Rd. This project was publicly tendered and delivered by local general contractor Wacor Holdings Ltd. – on budget and on schedule.

MORE SIDEWALKS An addiƟonal 1,500 lineal metres of sidewalk were installed in the Fairmile, Grayson and Erickson roads area as part of the City’s ongoing sidewalk inĮll program.

INNOVATIVE REPAIR FOR SIMMS CREEK CULVERT An urgent repair was fast-tracked to “slipline” a new three-metre diameter high-density polyethylene pipe directly inside a failing culvert. RehabilitaƟng the culvert under Galerno Rd. safeguarded the roadway structure and uƟlity network and enhanced the sensiƟve environmental habitat of Simms Creek. The project included addiƟonal stream works to improve Įsh migraƟon and was completed within the permiƩed Įsheries Ɵmeline. This project was publicly tendered with local contractor Upland ExcavaƟng Ltd and McElhanney ConsulƟng Services and completed on budget and on schedule.

DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION MOVES AHEAD This mulƟ-year iniƟaƟve consists of diīerent projects and eīorts that will help bring life, vibrancy and economic growth to the downtown core. Several important steps were taken in 2012: Council oĸcially adopted Downtown RevitalizaƟon as a priority in their 2012-2015 Strategic Plan; Council created a “Special Commercial Area” in the Downtown RevitalizaƟon Tax ExempƟon Bylaw to act as a catalyst for re-development of the downtown core; design work on the St Ann’s Block Project began; and project design concepts were shared with the community at a December Open House event.

In 2013, the City plans to upgrade underground services—sewer, water, storm drainage, etc.—and make above-ground improvements to roads, landscaping, sidewalks and public areas that connect 10th Avenue to Shoppers Row via the St. Ann’s block area. There are also opportuniƟes to greatly enhance the streetscape area where private property and public property meet to create vibrant, safe, pedestrian-friendly public spaces that will enhance the downtown core for everyone.

SIMMS CREEK BIKE PATH PHASE II Phase II of the Simms Creek Bike Path was completed in 2012. The trail secƟon from Rockland Rd. to Dogwood St. now incorporates an eīecƟve system for back lot drainage and a hard surface for cycling.

SANITARY SEWER SMOKE TESTING In 2012, the City completed its Įrst smoke tesƟng program to check for leaks into and out of sewer lines.

Smoke tests performed on sanitary sewers within the Campbellton and Quinsam Heights neighbourhoods idenƟĮed locaƟons in the sanitary sewer system where rainwater can enter the sewers and increase the volume of water in the system. Making any necessary repairs will make more room in the sewage collecƟon system and at treatment faciliƟes. Reduced Ňows also decrease operaƟng costs associated with pumping and treatment.

SHORELINE EROSION REPAIR Two hundred metres of eroded marine shoreline between the new liŌ staƟon on Hwy. 19A and Rockland Rd. were restored using about 720 cubic yards (60 truck loads) of wood and gravel removed from the Big Rock and Ken Forde boat ramps during spring maintenance. This secƟon of the foreshore was extensively damage when rip rap in this area collapsed under the power of waves that stormed the shore in November 2011 and March 2012. The rip rap collapse resulted in soil washing away and damage to the seawalk. Using debris that clogs the boat ramps to nourish starved beaches at key locaƟons is consistent with recommendaƟons in the City’s Marine Foreshore Habitat Assessment and RestoraƟon Plan and complies with the Federal Fisheries Act. The area was restored with a natural beach and more gradual slope, which helps protect the foreshore by absorbing powerful wave energy. This slows foreshore erosion, reduces maintenance, protects City infrastructure and public access along the foreshore (roadways, sewer line and the popular seawalk) and improves natural habitat.

BIG ROCK BOAT RAMP DESIGN WORK AWARDED Designs are in the works for upgrades to this free facility for recreaƟonal boaters in Campbell River. Preliminary and detailed designs for a revamp of the ramp will be done by Outlook Land Design of Comox. Outlook will begin work on the project early in January 2013.

CITY CREWS RESPONDED TO MARCH WIND STORM EMERGENCY A thank-you to all City staī involved in responding to service interrupƟons during the March wind storm that brought extensive power outages and property damage.

The City Roads department took the lead in emergency response by closing dangerous routes and eĸciently managing clean-up operaƟons. At the height of the storm, 35 employees were operaƟng equipment, controlling traĸc, and taking calls at the Dogwood OperaƟons Centre to help direct our eīorts where they were most needed. Everyone performed their duƟes in a safe and very eīecƟve manner.

DITCHING MAINTENANCE PROGRAM The City’s ditching maintenance program addressed an area of the community with chronic drainage issues to provide an eīecƟve outlet and at the same Ɵme comply with environmentally-sensiƟve Įsh habitat criteria.

Jan. 11, 1953 Dec. 15, 2012 Jerry Flanders, 59, passed away suddenly from a heart aĆŠack, in La PeĂąita, Mexico. Jerry lived life to the fullest. His easy going nature, willingness to help others, and his quick smile will always be remembered. He was a man of integrity, always busy, always happy. He enjoyed his work for 35 years at the Campbell River pulp mill, where he was highly respected; he raised his daughter Sheri, as a single Dad and was the proud grandfather of two grandchildren, Saige (2) and Oliver (3 months). Jerry held Ryan Arkwright (son in law) in high regard. Jerry had a passion for ÄŽshing, bowling, and golÄŽng. He could build or repair anything in his shop. He enjoyed the companionship of the many good friends he made throughout the years.

More recently, he married the love of his life, Jane Fellows, on June 7, 2012. He made her family, his family. Her daughter Annilee, sons Ben and Adam Guy and his wife TiÄŤani, and their children NaÄŽyas (7) and Aaliya (5 months) were blessed to have Jerry in their lives. His loving wife, Jane, introduced him to life in Mexico where he quickly made new friends and enjoyed Ć&#x;me â&#x20AC;&#x153;guarding the pool.â&#x20AC;?

Jerry was predeceased by his beauĆ&#x;ful, liĆŠle boy, Danny, his mother Leah, father David and sister, Jan (Dave). Family members leĹ&#x152; to grieve are: Doreen and husband, Arnie and their two children, Joe and Kim. Wanda (Frank) and son Randy, Brenda (Randy), Robin (Latoya), David, Dillis (Bob), Carl and Dennis (Doreen).

Jerry will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been part of his life. As per his request, he was cremated and his ashes will be spread in the Seymour Narrows in the summer of 2013. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dad, I can't imagine life without seeing your smile and hearing your voice. Campbell River Living Sally Ann short of goal As of Dec. 24, 2012, The Salvation Army in Campbell River has reached $101,500 in its annual Christmas Kettle fundraising campaign.

Dec. 24 was the final day of their Christmas Kettle campaign but they will gladly accept donations after Christmas as well. The money they raise at Christmas constitutes the main portion of their Community Services

budget and goes towards staffing and operating such programs as their soup kitchen, Family Services assistance (clothing, household items, to families in need) and emergency grocery assistance.

“We thank the people and businesses of Campbell River who have already been such a great support and are hopeful of reaching our goal before the end of the month,” said Capt.

donation from a Campbell R ive r bu s i ness has resulted in a huge improvement to the Campbell River Art Gallery’s ability to display art in its lobby exhibitions.

The gallery’s satellite cases, located in the lobby of the Centennial Building, are a showcase for local artists who wish to share their work with the community, but the fact that there was no shelving inside the cases meant it was difficult to dis-

play pottery, sculpture and other three-dimensional pieces.

During the summer of 2012, the gallery was planning to have an exhibit of stunning wooden vehicles created by local artisan Ron Francis, but the lack of shelves meant a logistical problem.

L o n g t i m e vo l u n teer Brian Kyle heard about the issue, and approached Dale Stevens of Campbell River Glass with the conundrum.

The local business

immediately created and donated thick glass shelving, custom cut for the satellite cases.

Francis’s exhibition was an enormous success with locals and visitors alike, who were impressed by his impeccable attention to detail.

“We were absolutely thrilled with this donation,” said CR Art Gallery executive director Jeanette Taylor. “Campbell River Glass’s contribution has meant a major improvement in our

ability to display work in the satellite cases.”

The glass shelving is in use again in a current show of work created by students at Carihi and Timberline Secondary schools, which includes sculpture and other threedimensional pieces.

“These shelves are a vast improvement and we are truly thankful to Campbell River Glass for being such a friend to the arts in our community,” said Gallery curator Liz Larsen Stoneberger.

The partners and associates of Chan Chhan Nowosad N Boates, Chartered Accountants would like to congratulate Karenn and Marlo for passing the National Uniform Exam (UFE) (UFE). The UF UFE E is an exam written by Chartered Accountant students across Canada over three days in September. Passing the UFE is truly a milestone achievement.

Karen has been with the Chan Nowosad Boates team for almost 20 years serving and managing a variety of clients as an accounting technician and in 2010 decided to become a Chartered Accountant (CA). Marlo joined us in January 2006 after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Forestry at University of British Columbia and began her training in the CA Program.

Marlo’s recent focus of work is in the trust, estate, non-resident department although she has also utilized her degree in forestry with that sector of our clients.

Both Karen and Marlo completed their articling and rigorous course schedule delivered through the CA School of Business (CASB) leading up to the UFE. Karen qualified as a CA this December and Marlo will qualify as a CA in January. We are all very proud of both of their accomplishments and look forward to having them continue serving their clients and mentoring our newest CA students.

Chan Nowosad Boates has been providing accounting services to our clients on Vancouver Island for nearly 30 years. We attribute our success not only to our clients but also to providing continuing education and training opportunities to our team members and having great people like Karen and Marlo, who take the initiative to further their education.

With a great assist from one of Mrs. Claus’ helpers, Mrs. Kew, the team collected more than 230 coats that were cleaned free of charge
