Valley trio sets a high standard for athletes to follow

Making the Olympics or Paralympics has always seemed like a pipe dream for smalltown athletes.

But Olympians Emily Zurrer and Michael Braithwaite, pictured with Cowiichan Secondary School principal Charlie Coleman, and Paralympian Richard Peter are proof it doesn’t matter where you come from,

you can always reach the highest plateau in sports with the right mix of dedication, determination and even some luck.

t’s the ultimate achievement for an athlete.

There’s no greater thrill than representing your country in the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

Three homegrown Cowichan Valley talents were on the world’s biggest sporting stage at London 2012. That makes Olympic soccer player Emily Zurrer, Olympic rower Michael Braithwaite and Paralympic wheelchair basketball player Richard Peter the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial’s Newsmakers of the Year.

It was the second Olympics for Zurrer, the ¿rst for Braithwaite and the ¿fth Paralympics for Peter.

All three are elite athletes, but took decidedly different paths to arrive at the same destination.

Zurrer was tabbed as an early phenom while playing soccer at Crofton Elementary School.

“Emily was an intelligent player, fearless in the tackle even in those days, had a strong shot and was an excellent header of the ball,’’ recalled Tim Lord, her coach at the time.

“I believe she practised her ball skills a lot at home on her own and probably with her family.

“She was already an outstanding all-around athlete in her age group in the Cowichan Valley and inspired those around her with her talent and modesty.’’

“As a kid, I didn’t really think about the fact that my natural ability may have been better than other kids my age in some things,’’ Zurrer, now 25, pointed out. “I just simply wanted to play sports. When people would tell me that I had a natural athletic ability, I thought it was ‘cool’ and handy to have, especially when I got to compete with the boys, but I really didn’t think too much of it until I got older and I realized it could take me places.’’

Zurrer continued to excel in a variety of other sports such as rugby, basketball, karate, volleyball and track and ¿eld throughout her high school years at Cowichan Secondary before soccer became her specialty.

Braithwaite, now 25 as well, was also an avid sportsman as a swimmer with the Duncan Stingrays and a ThunderYour Community

birds’ basketball player at Cowichan Secondary School. But it wasn’t immediately apparent rowing would become his specialty.

“I got into and stayed involved in sports because it was something I could do well and loved doing,’’ said Braithwaite. “I started rowing in Grade 11 with the hopes of becoming good enough to compete at a university level.’’

Braithwaite’s so-called ‘late entry’ into the sport is not unusual, according to the Maple Bay Rowing Club’s Justin Fryer, who has kept in contact with Braithwaite throughout his career, because rowers tend to reach full potential at a later age.

“While one can detect potential in early teenage rowers in terms of athletic ability, build and mental attitude to prolonged training and competition, one realizes that it will be a long time before such potential can be realized at an Olympic level,’’ pointed out Fryer.

“Michael displayed athletic ability from the start and was able to ‘move a boat.’ He progressed so fast that he moved from novice to junior in the same year. By Grade 12, he was far ahead of everyone in spite of commitments to basketball, presidency of the student council and a focus on his academic ambitions.’’

Peter, who turned 40 in September, was injured in a freak bus accident at the age of four that con¿ned him to a wheelchair. That didn’t stop him from being a participant as he grew up at a time when opportunities in wheelchair sports were far more limited than today.

“I assume I played all the sports and activities a four-year-old would play at that age, but don’t quite recall back that far,’’ offered Peter. “I was always an active kid and enjoyed all sports. Of course, ball hockey was what we all played after school but also baseball, football, whatever I could join in on.’’

A visit to Peter’s school by the Victoria wheelchair basketball demonstration team proved to be a life-changing experience.

“I think then wheelchair sports noticed I had some potential and got me into their sports programs pretty quick,’’ he said. “So I tried as many different opportunities as I could and tried all of the sports and sports camps

The support system in the valley provided all three athletes with the basis they needed, but eventually they had to broaden their horizons to continue progressing toward the highest level of competition.

“It was de¿nitely challenging coming from the island where there aren’t as many opportunities,’’ Zurrer indicated.

“The support and quality of people are second to none, but if you want to be playing at a provincial or national team level, it most likely means that you’re going to have to be living on the ferry every weekend during a lot of your high school years, like I did.

“In saying that, I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the support — or driving skills — of my parents and coaches on the island. Whenever an opportunity to go play at the next highest level arose, I always had the encouragement to go after it.

“Of course, I had to rely on outside resources along the way. To make the Olympics, you are always striving to train smarter, run faster, eat better, sleep better, think better. There is a team of people behind every athlete and to ¿nd the best, you have to leave your comfort zone to do it.’’

“My family was very supportive and played a large role in getting me to London,’’ Braithwaite said. “My parents made it possible for me to play any sport that ¿t into my schedule which required a lot of driving. Additionally, all three of my siblings were very active, both in sports and extracurriculars. Between morning swim practices and after-school activities, my parents put in a massive amount of time and energy, essentially putting their lives on hold for us.

“I think the main role the Cowichan Valley played was that it created a lot of opportunities for me to get involved in a wide variety of sports. This was

probably due to the climate that we are fortunate to have, and the infrastructure in the valley sports communities.

“In terms of rowing, the Maple Bay Rowing Club actually provided a very good starting point for me. I think that the relaxed atmosphere at the club, coupled with beautiful scenery, made rowing there very enjoyable and appealing. I also think that rowing is a sport where a very serious approach at an early age can actually be detrimental to an athlete’s development and cause them to burn out before they can reach their potential. I thought Maple Bay provided a great introduction to the sport for me.’’

Peter praised his family and the community for supporting him along the journey of receiving the best opportunities to achieve his goals.

“My family always had a tough time ¿nancially but always managed to get me to all of my sporting activities,’’ he pointed out. “And Cowichan Tribes was there to support me whenever I was in need. I did miss a few trips because of ¿nancial means but not many. If you ask any amateur athlete, it is never easy without sponsors and ¿nancial assistance at all levels. more on page 5

“I would never say that I made the national team in spite of being from the valley or that it had any speci¿c role, but that it was more of a partnership. I was always very proud to be representing Canada and Cowichan Tribes at the same time throughout my career.’’

“We played against China, the host country, in our second game in front of 60,000 people, and at the time it was by far the most I had ever played in front of. I was so nervous but I loved every second of it. The second time around, I would say that we were more focused on making it to the podium and less occupied with the enormity of it all and the distractions that come with it. Even so, when you walk into the stadium and see the Olympic rings, that same euphoric feeling rushes through you. I doubt that will ever change.’’

Braithwaite, who parlayed a successful rowing career at the University of Toronto into a partnership with Kevin Kowalyk of Manitoba in double sculls at the Olympics, admitted he would have enjoyed his ¿rst Olympic experience in London a lot more with better results.

“We were two guys with next to no experience and we were up against a very deep, experienced ¿eld,’’ Braithwaite pointed out. “We were outclassed and, no matter the stage, it isn’t fun to lose.

“Apart from the racing, the Olympics were amazing.

We ¿nished racing in the ¿rst week so I had 10 days to enjoy and experience the Olympics without the stresses of racing on my mind. I didn’t get a chance to be in Vancouver in 2010 so London was the ¿rst time I have ever been in a city hosting the Olympics. It was really interesting how positive and excited everyone was. It’s as though everyone was on a two-week vacation from real life and really becoming engrossed in the Games.’’

“Going into the stadium in my ¿rst Olympics is one of my favourite moments in my career,’’ Peter remembered. “It was great to be representing Canada, my people, my sport and just being part of the whole Paralympics’ Games sensation. I really enjoyed each Games very differently from the previous Games, so I was able to learn from each.

“I knew this would be my last Paralympics. I wanted to enjoy it as much as possible and not just for myself. There were a few other teammates that had also been in all of those ¿ve Paralympic Games together so we enjoyed the moments together.’’

Winning the Olympic bronze medal in London provided Zurrer with a great reward for all her hard work and the realization of how she’s inspired others.

“When I ¿rst started this journey, I was just a kid who loved to play sports,’’ she said. “I am still that kid, but now I have more recently started to grasp the level of impact athletes such as myself have made on young kids across the country. For Cowichan kids, especially, I think it’s cool for some of them to see how people like Michael, Richard and myself have been able to achieve our dreams, overcome obstacles and compete at the highest level.’’

“I actually have very little awareness about the kind of inÀuence I have had in the valley,’’ offered Braithwaite. “I like to think that I am inspiring people to try to play sports and eventually ¿nd a couple that they can really excel at, but it isn’t like I am being bombarded by fan mail. t has been the highlight of Councillor Sharon Jackson’s life and a exceptional year for the City of Duncan.

The Duncan Centennial celebrations began at the opening ceremony on March 4 and in the nine months that followed Jackson and the Duncan Centennial committee worked with dedicated volunteers to organize 16 outstanding events. Jackson credits those volunteers for making it such an amazing year.

“I got to work with such spectacular, stellar people. The volunteers and people who worked on all the centennial projects are so committed to their passion in life. When it came to our legacy projects of the totem pole and fountain, I found myself working with world-class artists that I would normally not have an opportunity to meet. Paul Douville, who used to be the CAO, was the volunteer coordinator. He’s a detail guy and would remember tiny details. I had such excellent volunteers.”

The opening ceremony was one of Jackson’s most memorable moments, though minutes before Jackson wasn’t so sure it was going to be a success. Lt.-Gov. Steven Point was the guest of honour who would raise the Àag for the ¿rst time. Ten minutes before the ceremony was due to begin outside Duncan city hall on Kenneth Street, Jackson said there were 20 people on the street.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh no!’ In that last 10 minutes 800 people arrived. Cadets, Shriners, Girl Guides, representatives from the Legion and other service clubs, the Boy Scouts. People from all walks of life were there.”

The Àag, which Jackson designed and features Native salmon and a silhouette of city hall on a Vancouver Canucks blue-and-green background, was raised to the of¿cial Duncan song, Love This Town, written by the winner of the Duncan Centennial Songwriting Contest Paul Ruszel.

In April, the City of Duncan received a $75,000 birthday gift from the province. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong announced the arts and culture grant toward the city’s centennial celebrations.

Two legacies remain for residents to enjoy. Cowichan Station artist Peter Lewis, famous for his Great Divide Waterfall over Edmonton’s High Level Bridge, created Quench, an 8 1/2-foot, Fiberglas totem-pole drinking fountain for people and pets, which resides in on the west side of Duncan city hall.

A colourful 34-foot intricately carved red-cedar totem pole stands proud in Charles Hoey Park. A the pole-raising ceremony in December, Carver and Kwagulth Chief Calvin Hunt proudly hosted proceedings for the centennial art piece, Àanked by speaker Chief Frank Nelson, plus Cowichan elders Ray Peter and Gus Joe, and others who represented Cowichan territory’s ¿ve villages. The pole uses mythical characters to tell the story of the relationship between the City of Duncan and its neighbours, the Cowichan Tribes.

The only thing left is to place the time capsule in the ground in January. The capsule contains letters from children, CDs, DVDs, and technology to help those opening it in 25 years’ time.

“We put a CD and DVD player in it so they could play the CDs and DVDs. Otherwise it would be like pulling out a gramophone. Technology is going to be exponentially different in 25 years,” Jackson said.

Toyota RAV4 has a decided import feel

by Jim Robinson, Metroland Media/WheelsTalk.com Although Toyota is an import manufacturer they staged the world debut of the fourth generation RAV4, many of which will be built in Toyota’s huge, award-winning assembly plant in Woodstock.

The fundamental design elements that have defined RAV4 down the years remain equally relevant for the new fourth generation model. While it remains true to its heritage, it has evolved to meet changes in customer requirements and preferences, particularly the importance families place on space and versatility.

The new RAV4 is longer (+205 mm over SWB model without rear wheel carrier) and wider (+30 mm) but lower (-25mm) than its predecessor, and presents a new silhouette

that expresses its versatility, roominess and improved dynamic capabilities.

The new Toyota “face” includes a stronger treatment of the lower grille and a smaller upper grille extending the full width between the headlamp units.

A good thing gets better with the 2012 CR-V

By Neil Moore, Metroland Media/Wheelstalk. com When the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 hit showroom floors in 1997, the effect on the industry was, if not revolutionary, at least evolutionary.

These products largely defined the compact SUV segment, giving consumers a more fuel efficient, more nimble alternative to the gas-guzzling, full-size sport utilities of the day.

Since then, design changes

for the most part have been incremental. Probably because the typical compact SUV buyer favours the triedand-true formula: tall-box trucky styling, all-wheel-drive surefootedness and a large four cylinder engine for a reasonable compromise between power and fuel economy. a Which is what Honda has always delivered with their top-selling CR-V. Sure, it has evolved in terms of styling, with the newfor-2012 model benefiting

from deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front fascia. The updated look also features a strong three-bar grille, flanked by wrap-around, projector style headlights, giving it more visual impact than previous models.

CR-V offers superb fit and finish on the inside, especially in the top-trim Touring model, which includes premium content like leather seating surfaces, upgraded audio system, navigation with rearview camera and more.

Other evolutionary changes are under the skin, such as an increase in body stiffness and refinements in the suspension. Thanks as well to underbody covers and a rear spoiler, not to mention more noise insulation, the new CR-V enjoys a passenger cabin that is nearly as quiet as its Acura sibling.

And nearly as posh.

My tester, in top-level Touring trim, had comfortable, double-stitched leather seating (10-way power for the driver) with double-stitched armrests, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, loads of soft-touch materials, metallic and chrome accents.

Other amenities include dual-zone climate control, large-screen navigation system, seven-speaker 360-watt audio system, moonroof and auto-

dimming rearview mirror.

Big 17-inch alloys and protruding wheel arches add to the surefooted look of the 2012 Honda CR-V. All CR-Vs also get a multiinfo display with five-inch colour screen and steeringwheel controls. This gives you access to the usual stuff like clock, compass, trip computer, fuel economy and various warnings, as well as audio system, Bluetooth and SMS text messaging. You can even customize it with your own wallpaper.

Even more unexpected is the standard equipped rearview camera that displays either on this monitor or on the larger navigation screen, when available. The driver can select from three settings that include a wide 180-degree view, and topdown view.

Another thoughtful detail is the expanded view

driver’s-side mirror. Its inner portion uses a flat pane for standard viewing, while the outer portion uses a convex element for a wider field of view. Great for detecting vehicles in what could otherwise be a blind spot.

The standard powerplant for all CR-V models is Honda’s proven 2.4-litre, i-VTEC DOHC four-cylinder engine. A few tweaks for 2012 give it five more ponies for a total of 185 hp, and two more lb/ft of torque now peaking at 163.

A five-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Fuel economy is also improved for both front-drive and AWD models – up to 12 per cent better in highway driving.

The CR-V is no road rocket, and certainly can’t keep up with a V6-powered RAV4 or turbocharged Sportage. But you’re not paying the price either in the showroom or at the pumps.

Despite my tendency towards lead-footedness, the CR-V still managed a combined fuel economy of 10.5/L per 100 km during my week of testing. And its launch and passing power were more than satisfactory for a four-cylinder truck.

But performance driving is typically low on the list of ‘must haves’ for those considering a compact sport

utility – cargo carrying is more relevant.

And here is where the CR-V shines.

Not that it has the largest cargo capacity in its class, but that Honda continues to make it easier to use. Case in point is the ‘easy fold’ 60/40 split rear seat that employs a couple of release handles in the cargo area, and a strap by each rear door. A single pull on any of these will individually tilt the seat base forward, lower the headrest and drop the seatback forward.

It’s a great feature when you’re struggling with boxes and bags, giving you a nearly flat cargo floor and up to 2,007 litres of space in one motion.

Lift-in height and the cargo floor itself have also been lowered by 20 mm.

Indeed, the CR-V is a wellbuilt, thoughtfully designed vehicle, which is probably why it is Honda’s second best-selling model, behind only the Civic. Sure, there’s much worthy competition in this segment, but here the CR-V still holds a healthy second place.

And with sales up 28 per cent year-to-date, it demonstrates that Honda’s small, measured changes continue to be the right changes for the CR-V.

iguring out just what people are reading has always been a bit of inexact science for a free community newspaper.

It’s always been a melange of reader feedback through phone calls and letters, combined with the buzz we hear in the community.

But ¿nding out what our online readers are clicking on is another matter entirely.

At our website, we know exactly what stories you news hounds are gravitating toward.

Here are cowichannewsleader.com’s most-read stories of 2012: 10) It’s always going to attract attention when a transit bus is involved in an accident. Even more so when the cause is apparently an armchair that had fallen on the highway. Interest was high enough to put this story into the number ten slot on our list.

9) One of the biggest — if not the biggest — items on Cowichan’s annual event calendar is Sunfest. But the normally high level of interest in the show ratcheted up a few notches this year with the announcement country superstar Alan Jackson would headline Sunfest 2013.

8) We’re still waiting for the report from Saanich police investigating a crash between an RCMP cruiser and a sedan that put a Cowichan woman in hospital. If the amount of interest in the story on our website was any indication, our readers are as well.

7) Despite what you may think, people are interested in good news. An example is this story. We may think of the Cowichan sweater as an international icon, but when the federal government made it of¿cial, people were happy to start spreading the news.

6) Despite the above, few would be surprised to discover tragedies frequently become candidates for this list. That is especially true when the incident occurs in a very public location, like the August collision between a cyclist and truck, and only sketchy information is available. Speaking of depression, it does seem more prevalent at this time of year. There are many reasons for it but sometimes it is just the lack of light during the short days of winter. Ask our pharmacists about light therapy. Often simply sitting under a special light for a 30 minutes daily can help banish the blues.

William Elliott, 24, was not only charged with the ¿rst-degree murder of Jones, but also with that of Duncan woman Karrie Ann Stone, who was killed in July 2010.

Presenting the Cowichan Junos for the best musical productions of 2012 Cowichan’s 2012 compendium of musical styles was crowned by Cowichan newcomers such as folk-icon Steve Earle.

And return visits — including fiddle phenom Ashley MacIsaac, and Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band — were also welcome in one of Canada’s artistic meccas.

But it was this year’s surprises that made

Take the classical, cutting-educational Tafelmusik, the string virtuosity of The Lost Fingers, or historical delights of Tales Of Cougar Annie.

Paired with Chemainus Theatre’s family fare during All Shook Up, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, they all

deserve News Leader Pictorial Junos.

That’s not to forget annual festivals such as SunFest, the Islands Folk Festival, Special Woodstock, and summerfest’s 39 Days Of July, plus the great Cowichan Music Festival.

Folk: Steve Earle Mar. 24, Cowichan Theatre Palpable imagery flowed from Steve Earle’s mike during his solo gift that rightly filled the Cowichan Theatre.

The Grammy Award winner played one 90-minute set for 730some fans who hung on every word and chord during his masterful show.

Yes, Cowichanians ate a fine meal of pure Earle, who left lingering images of jail bars, Prairie skies, lonely highways and desperate people.

Family: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat June 23, Chemainus Theatre The intended musical smorgasbord comprising Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was amply served during Chemainus Theatre premiere.

Director Shane Snow and his multi-talented cast, plus stage band, did a superb job spicing the Broadway hit for a small stage.

Tenor Adam Charles owned his part as the downtrodden dreamer — betrayed by his jealous brothers, then sold as a slave who becomes a loving prince

East Coast: Ashley MacIsaac Nov.1, Cowichan Theatre Forget his tabloid scandals and sleazy labels.

Celtic fiddle bad-boy Ashley MacIsaac’s morphing into affable, down-to-earth player was ably displayed during his terrific Cowichan Theatre return.

Some folks may have thought a techie had sauntered on stage for a sound check after a bunch of adept songs by opening trio The Small Town Villains.

But it was McIsaac, cradling that inexpensive instrument. He made it sound priceless during two sets of down-home and upbeat numbers — aided by his adept sidemen — for 400 fiddleheads. Rename him Ashley McCeilidh.

Rock ‘n’ Roll: Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band Aug. 24, Crofton Pub It wasn’t quite the same as the good old days when Monte & The Beaumonts’ Sunday night jam packed Maple Bay’s Brigantine pub.

But it sure felt close during Crofton Pub’s gig starring Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band.

And the rollicking sextet, led by Hank (Uncle Wiggly) Leonhardt, gave fans what they came for: danceable, rockin’ blues of various shades.

Roots: Cougar Annie Tales — amid a terrific ensemble cast boasting skills of as many hues as Joseph’s trademark coat.

Mostly, Joseph musically reminded us that without dreams, we don’t have much.

Oct. 17, Duncan Garage Showroom Cougar Annie’s cabin and rainforest gardens should be a national monument.

Actress Katrina Kadoski showed why during the endearing performance of her fringe play Cougar Annie Tales before a packed Duncan Garage Showroom.

Viewers were entranced as the Sooke actress brought Ada (Cougar) Annie Jordan to vivid life during the slightly melancholy musical-drama.

Annie bagged 70-some mountain lions for bounty. Likewise, Tales was loaded with Kadoski’s telling tunes that proved a blast from the past for some viewers.

Nov. 25, Cowichan Theatre Classical music will never be the same locally after Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra played the Cowichan Theatre.

Violinist Jeanne Lamon led her sensational 16-piece company through Alison Mackay’s The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres, lending visual and educational dimensions to classical fare that’s traditionally just great ear candy.

A galaxy of 72 stunning photos from the Hubble telescope, NASA and elsewhere were projected on a giant circular screen.

Nov. 17, Cowichan Theatre The timeless talent of French guitar icon Django Reinhardt — who lost several digits in a hotel fire — was lovingly handed to Cowichanians during The Lost Fingers’ rollicking Cowichan Theatre show.

Guitarists Christian Roberge and Byron Mikaloff, plus string bassist Alex Morissette, used harmonies and humour to immortalize Reinhardt’s unique sound by Djan Djangoizing pop to metal hits spanning Careless Whi Whisper, and Sunglasses At Night, Nigh to Black Velvet and Tom Sawyer. Recognition received in droves Achievements: Many proud moments for valley residents to embrace in 2012 Maeve Maguire

he Cowichan Valley was chalk full of people and organizations receiving local, provincial, national, and international honours and hitting impressive milestones. This list is by no means complete, but it highlights, in chronological order, some of the proudest moments in 2012.

• The year started with the birth of Jackson Anthony Ryan Jordan, Cowichan’s ¿rst baby of 2012. Mother Cary Ann Jackson gave birth by unplanned cesarean section to the ¿ve-pound, eight-ounce bundle at 9:28 p.m. on New Year’s Day. • It was a banner year for the News Leader Pictorial’s Pennies for Presents campaign. Between the NLP’s Huge Book Sale and the Pennies for Presents fundraiser the total monies raised was $17,300.

• It was an emotional moment for 83-year-old Duncan curling legend Glen Harper when he learned the Duncan Curling Club facility on Sherman Road would now be known as the Glen Harper Curling Centre.

• Graduation rates were up across the board in Cowichan, but no more so than for Aboriginal students.Data showed the Aboriginal graduation rate at 55.1 % — up from 35.6 % the year before, and 34.2 % the year before that.

• Duncan’s Island Savings moved its Duncan customer service branch from its downtown headquarters to a new location in the Duncan Mall. The new 9,300square-foot space is part of Island Savings’ three-year, $15-million upgrade and expansion plan.

• Cobble Hill’s Emily Dorma’s ¿ve-year-old Havanese show dog was honoured as best in breed during the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club show in New York city — the most high-pro¿le dog show in the world.

• Ladysmith’s Frank Taylor received a Medal of Bravery from Canada’s Governor General. The recognition stems from the heroic rescue of Saltair resident Roy (Ted) Silvey, who was trapped in his home as it burned on July 22, 2008.

• Duncan-raised Sgt. Maj. George Parrott, a career soldier, earned one of Canada’s highest military awards, the meritorious service medal, during a lavish ceremony Jan. 26 in Ottawa’s Rideau Hall.

• Curbside organics pickup started in May in North Cowichan. Green organics bins were delivered to some 9,200 households.

• Ken McKinnon, co-founder of Cobble Hill’s Paci¿c Builders’ Supplies, was named recipient of this year’s Black Tie Lifetime Achievement Award. McKinnon, who at one time owned three truss facilities in Cobble Hill, Surrey and Cranbrook, received the award at the Black Tie Awards hosted by Duncan-Cowichan Chamber of Commerce at the end of April. The Business Achievement Award went to Chad Conrad of Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse and Bar. • The Truth and Reconciliation Conference stopped in Duncan in March. Most who attended were optimistic it marked only the beginning of a new chapter to rectify the cultural catastrophe forced upon First Nations People here and across the country. “As we heard yesterday, we’ve got a lot of work to do. We’re in the midst of a historic opportunity,” said Commissioner Marie Wilson, who pointed out more than 2,500 people from 12 countries watched the Truth and Reconciliation Conference via the internet. She wasn’t alone. “It’s great to see all these people here listening, taking in stories, hearing and growing,” said Indian Residential School Survivor Committee member Barney Williams Jr., 72, who attended two residential schools in B.C. • Gale force winds, heavy rain and icy sleet didn’t stop Ryan Thirlwall’s Tutu Walk for Hope as he reached the Boys & Girls Club in Victoria after walking all night from Nanaimo. Thirlwall’s 126-kilometre walk in a bright pink tutu and tights was an effort to raise money for a bullying awareness program through the Boys & Girls’ Club.

• As seen on TV, Sam Koffski’s Workhorse II invention received a $75,000 investment from Dragons’ Den millionaire Arlene Dickinson. The Workhorse II is an adjustable, use-anywhere sawhorse/workbench brackets.

“I’m on cloud nine,” Koffski, 82, said after a national airing of CBC’s popular Dragons’ Den. In another televised victory, Duncan couple Carol Dirom and husband Bruce, owners of Port Hardy’s Hardy Buoys Smoked Fish Inc. won the CBC show The Big Decision. Market-

ing maven and business investor Arlene Dickinson agreed to help the struggling Port Hardy company with 80 employees overcome their ¿nancial challenges.

• The Cowichan Sweater and its Coast Salish creators were recognized by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. A government press release stated, “Since the late 19th century, Coast Salish women have combined ancient wool-working technologies with European knitting to make Cowichan sweaters. These internationally recognizable sweaters have contributed to Coast Salish identity and aided Coast Salish cultural continuity when faced with the challenges of the loss of traditional resources.”

• John Bishop, 81, was the ¿rst Cowichan Valley resident of the year to receive the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal from Gov. Gen. David Johnston and Prime Minister Stephen Harper. During Bishop’s 37-year military career, the 20-year Cobble Hill resident fought in Korea, commanded a military school in Ghana, mediated arms supplies in Vietnam in 1973 and served as Canada’s representative at the Korean peace talks in the early 1980s.

• Joe Thorne was the latest in a series of Cowichan residents to receive the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. The Duncan councillor was saluted Dec. 13 for his work with Canadian war veterans. Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder announced a total of 30 residents of her riding had been honoured with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, including 20 from Cowichan.

• Cowichan Bay’s Kalliana King added another prestigious award to her growing list of accolades. The 11-year-old who dyed her hair pink then shaved it off to single-handedly raise $14,600 for muscular dystrophy Canada picked up the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. She was one of just 28 Canadians to receive the award from Gov. Gen. David Johnston on April 17.

• In April, the Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre opened its doors. “You can see the little barnacles opening their mouths!” exclaimed Louise Dwyer, peering into a gurgling tank of sea critters at the new Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre. “And if we frighten that sea cumber, it would lose all its innards.”

• Cowichanians set a world record. At least 2,000 people worked out together in a giant ¿tness circuit at the Cowichan Sportsplex in April, annihilating the previous U.S. record of 317 people. “History in the making — I love it,” said Morne Van Niekerk, who kept the massive crowd upbeat with encouragement on the microphone.

• Winning a provincial Aboriginal Youth Champion Award was huge for Cowichan teenager Lizzie Thorne.

But then, so was her work in Bolivia last year on awareness of violence against women and her current role in youth involvement with Cowichan Tribes.

WILLIAMS MARILYA JANE (WESLEY) Born in Nanaimo BC, October 4, 1927 to proud parents Weldon and Emily, passed with her family by her side in Duncan BC, Dec 23, 2012. It’s with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunty and friend.

The community knew her as “Cowichan Mama”; her family knew her as a women with a deep love for her culture and family. She was a strong, proud woman, always ready to open her door to anyone that needed it for a meal and laughter and love. Mama’s many kind words will stay with many throughout her family and the community.

Mama married Earl Williams (deceased) and had 11 children (deceased) Marge (Doug), Hank, Dick Donna), (deceased) Bruce (Bonnie), Sid (Yana), Ted Lyne), Faith (Darrel), George (Andrea), (deceased) Arnie, Sam, Stephen (Judy). She had 31 amazing grandchildren & with that came her beautiful great grandchildren. Her family even extended into great great grandchildren.

We can’t count the amount of honorary grandbabies she has taken in over the years as her own. Her immediate family, her nieces and nephews or her friends from all over, it didn’t matter who you are, everyone had a piece of her heart.

Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you I loved you so… you are free our Mama.. watch over us, until we meet again.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Cancer Society in Jane’s name; this society was close to Jane’s heart.

Service to be held Friday Dec 28, 2012 at 9am at The Duncan Shaker Church, burial to follow at the Indian Rd Cemetery.

Charan Kaur passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family at the age of 78, after a 11 month battle with cancer on December 21st 2012. She was born in 1934 in Ispur, Punjab and married Late Sham Singh Rai in 1948. She immigrated with her family to Leicester, England in 1965 and settled in Canada in 1974 where they raised their son and, eventually, helped raise their grandchildren.

Charan Kaur leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, Makhan and Tirtho, three grandchildren, Sunita (Trevor Hood), Selena and Arjun, sisters, brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charan Kaur had a kind heart, gave her love deeply, always caring for others, was compassionate and had a strong love and devotion for family and could light up a room with her presence. She loved gardening and had a passion for flowers.

A service will be held on Saturday December 29th 2012 at New Life Baptist Church, 1839 Tzouhalem Road, at 11am with doors opening at 10am.

Special thanks goes out to the CDH ER nurses and doctors, the CDH Chemo Unit, Cowichan Home Care Community Support Workers and Nurses, Dr. Griffin and the staff at the B.C. Cancer Agency. A heartfelt thank you goes out to family and friends for their love, support and help during the last 11 months.

SMITH, Leslie Alec February 17, 1927 – December 16, 2012 Les passed away peacefully at home with his children and his dog Ellie, by his side. He is predeceased by Doris, dear wife of 60 years and survived by his son Randy Smith, daughter Lynn Smith (Alastair Kerr).

Les was born in Saskatoon, brought up in North Battleford and lived in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina, Victoria, Vancouver, Medicine Hat, Cowichan Bay, finally settling in Chemainus.

Always in search of better career opportunities he was employed in a wide variety of occupations from radio DJ and CN ticket agent, insurance and pharmaceutical sales, to, eventually, a long career with Canada Trust.

Les had a very strong commitment to community and as a member of Kinsmen, Kiwanis, Big Brothers, The Rotary Club, The Legion, and, most notably, The Shrine and Masonic Lodge, he enjoyed the hard work and camaraderie involved and valued the deep friendships formed.

Les was well known everywhere he lived for his love of the piano. He enjoyed entertaining and was always ready to sit down at the piano to play on his own or with a band. More recently he could be found at the Chemainus extended care facility playing for the residents there. Les and Doris spent many winters in Indio, CA and they always had to get there in time for him to play for the New Year’s Eve parties.

The family would like to thank the many people who watched out for Dad: members of the Shrine, the folks at the Legion, the Rotary Club and his wonderful neighbours. Thanks also to Dr. Morris and the nurses at the Acute Care Center in Chemainus who were a tremendous support to his family. Thanks to Marg Elliot for welcoming Ellie, Les’s dog, into her home.

A gathering in memory of Les will take place Saturday, January 5 at 1pm at the Legion in Chemainus. Flowers are gratefully declined. CORCORAN, Ursula Mary Sept. 2, 1926 – Dec. 23, 2012 Ursula Mary Corcoran (nee McIntyre) passed away peacefully in her sleep with all her girls home for the holidays.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters Glenda Minor (Grant Harding), Candice (Larry Moore), Joy (Steve Kozielski), Chris Minor, as well as 4 grandchildren: Sandi. Jessica, Brian, Glen: 3 great grandsons, Alex, Austin, Dylan and her dear friend Orlan.

Ursula was born in Hamilton Ontario and grew up in Port Dalhousie, where she met and married her first husband Glen Orland Minor. Shortly after the birth of their fourth daughter in 1956, Ursula lost her husband in a car accident. Working first in the floral industry, a career in the health field followed. In 1985 she reunited with a prewar sweetheart when she married William Corcoran. They moved to Cobble Hill BC when Ursula retired in 1988 and enjoyed island life until Bill passed away after a lengthy illness in May 2000.Ursula lived her life with determination, strength and with much dignity. Her girls are grateful for the learned work ethic and commitment to family she taught us. The family wishes to thank her doctor Dawn Galbraith for the tremendous care she received the past several years.In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lupus Society would be appreciated. nother great year of sports is at an end and high school age athletes excelled like never

before.

There were so many to choose from but only a select few made the cut from a great 2012 crop.

In Part Two, athletes rated No. 51 through 80 are unveiled.

51. Tiara Wakelyn-Enger — Powerful boot produces plenty of offence for the Cowichan Valley U18 Gold girls’ soccer squad, including a recent four-goal effort. She’s made her presence felt on the ¿eld hockey pitch as well for many years.

52. Liam Lindsay — Junior boys’ athlete of the year at Cowichan Secondary School.

Known primarily for track and ¿eld, but also plays soccer and coaches.

53. Kain Melchior — Combines incredible track and ¿eld ability with quarterbacking duties for the Cowichan Bantam Bulldogs’ football team and basketball. Won a gold medal in provincial track and was a ¿nalist in two other events.

54. Taryn Smiley — Grade 10 Cowichan Secondary School student picked up a gold and a silver medal in track at the B.C. Summer Games. The CVAC Jaguars athlete was part of a relay team that set a B.C. Games record and added silver in the 100 metres.

55. Jesse Jenks — Chemainus Secondary School student playing goal for the South Island Royals in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. Picked up the player of the month award for his team in October.

56. Hayley Baker — Duncan Christian School Grade 9 student’s superb competitive year in Provincial Level gymnastics quali¿ed her for the B.C. Winter Games. There, the Duncan Dynamics Gymnastic Club member placed second on the vault and third on Àoor. At the provincial competition, she was ¿rst on the vault and Àoor.

57. Leah Theobald — Deadly speed on the rugby ¿eld. Has T-Bird, Cowichan Rugby Club, Island 15 and Island Summer Games sevens rugby on her resume. She’s frequently the game-winner with a try scored on offence or the saviour as the last possible tackler on defence.

58. Caleigh Coels — Superb out¿eld play and a strong bat helped the Victoria ’96 Devils

59. Matt Fracy — Young motorcycle trials rider from Shawnigan Lake climbing the ranks quickly with wins at all levels and now competes in the expert class. He’s a chip off the old block since dad Steve is a four-time national champion and mom Lorraine is a certi¿ed ¿tness trainer to work with him on conditioning.

60. Austin Palou — Made a great comeback from injury to compete at close to peak ef¿ciency with the CVAC Jaguars throughout the season, culminating in the Legion national track and ¿eld championships in Prince Edward Island.

61. Ryan MacDonald — Key member of the Cowichan Midget Bulldogs’ football team.

He scored the winning point on a kick during a playoff game against Chilliwack.

62. Jenner Court — Amazing multi-sport athlete all-star also made the grade as a regional player in ¿eld hockey while providing another weapon for the Cowichan Secondary School provincial runner-up team.

63. Toby Owen — Grade 12 student at Frances Kelsey Secondary played goalkeeper for the B.C. U18 team during the summer and was invited to a junior national camp in November.

64. Zach Diewert — Made the jump to the Nanaimo Pirates in the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League, leading the team in batting with a .366 average and second in the league for total hits with 48. Chemainus Secondary School’s junior male athlete of the year played on school volleyball and basketball teams.

65. Wyatt MacWatt — One

of those players who always works hard and does the little things right. Does hard running for the Cowichan Midget Bulldogs’ football team and also provides important blocks to spring teammate Blake TorokBoth free.

66. Brock Gowanlock — Grade 11 Cowichan Secondary student a member of the B.C. U16 rugby team, a strong and physical player who performs well above his age level and displays the same acumen on the football ¿eld with the Cowichan Midget Bulldogs.

67. Jenner Teufel — Famous dad Jake’s experiences in rugby rubbed off on the dynamic player who helped the Cowichan Rugby Club’s U19 team win the island championship, utilizing the skills he acquired from starting in the sport at such an early age.

68. Rene Bieberdorf — Leading scorer for the Brentwood College senior boys’ soccer team two years in a row despite being a mid¿elder and currently plays for the U21 Westcastle team of Victoria. Has also played Super Y and Metro with Lower Island Soccer and volunteered and worked with Cowichan Valley Soccer Association and World Cup Soccer with Brett Heslop at children’s soccer camps the past three years.

69. Tara Eriksen — Cowichan Secondary’s senior girls’ ¿eld hockey team would never have made it to second place in the provincial tournament without the Grade 10 goalie. Looking at going to the Okanagan Hockey School next year.

70. Danielle Schmidt — Rising star in the rowing program at Shawnigan Lake School since switching her primary focus from swimming. Competed on the junior girls 8+ and Open 4+ crews at the Canadian high

school championships in St. Catharines, Ont. 71. Darrian Gerard — Bantam-aged player joined the Duncan Red Hots midgets who competed in the Victoria Senior Women’s League. A concussion in the ¿rst game of the provincials took her out for the remainder of the season.

She will be joining the Victoria ’96 Devils fastpitch team this season.

72. Josh Charles — Second member of the famous basketball-playing family coming up through the ranks in the school system and went to tournaments south of the border and in Quebec with Team B.C.’s U15s. After playing in Grade 9 at Mount Prevost, he’s now a big-time contributor to a very strong Cowichan Secondary School junior boys’ squad.

73. Emily Adams — Grade 11 student at Chemainus Secondary School is an all-around sportsperson. She plays a great game of golf for a small girl but also puts her energy into soccer, volleyball and basketball with great success.

74. McLean Chicquen — Grade 12 member of the Claremont Secondary School lacrosse program is a pure goal-scorer in lacrosse. He had a slow start to the season with the Victoria Shamrocks Intermediate A box squad due to injury, but he’s sure to make a big impact next season.

75. Becky Bazinet — Very cool under pressure, the Duncan Christian School Grade 11 student continues to become a better basketball and volleyball player. She’s also an amazing soccer goalie for the DCS senior girls. She’s a great leader and a very positive person.

76. Eric Williams — An electrifying kick returner for the Cowichan Midget Bulldogs’ football team. Opponents

always tried to kick the ball away from him because he possessed the ability to return it for a touchdown. He did just that in a key comeback playoff win for the ‘Dogs.

78. Taylor Hamm — Captain of the Shawnigan Lake School junior girls’ basketball team that placed ¿rst in the Mid-Island championships and also captain of the junior girls’ soccer team that came second in the ISAs, third in the Island

championships and ninth in the provincials. Field hockey efforts landed her a place on the U18 regional team while sparking Shawnigan to second in the Island and provincial AA playoffs.

79. Cyrus Gray — A muchimproved player from last year for the Cowichan Thunderbirds’ senior boys’ basketball team who will be counted on to ease the scoring load for Jerod Dorby and Andrew Larson.

80. Kim Smith — Amazing Grade 11 player was on the ¿eld every minute for the Cowichan Secondary School ¿eld hockey team at the provincial tournament.

restlee Cooper is going to the big leagues.

The Cowichan Secondary School graduate has committed to playing NCAA Division 1 softball for the University of Indiana Purdue Mastodons at Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Cooper, whose softball career started in Duncan playing T-ball, has been with the Victoria ‘94 Devils for two years after a stint with a bantam team in Nanaimo. It has been a big commitment for Cooper to travel to Victoria for practices and games, but with no Midget A-level team in Cowichan, it was her best option.

All that driving to and from Victoria paid off for the 18-year-old.

“I had to give up a lot, especially for my grad year, but it was worth it because now I have a scholarship,” she said.

Cooper is an out¿elder/in¿elder whose excellent batting average of .547 and two MVP awards caught the attention of recruiters at the U18 Canadian Championships in Montreal. She was all set to take nursing in a post-secondary program when she got the call from Fort Wayne.

“Me and my dad Àew down there in October. They wanted me to Ày down to come check out the university and I talked to coaches and administration. We got to see the team play a couple of games.”

The Mastodons’ excellent level of play will push Cooper to improve her skills.

“They are unreal. I “I’m really can learn a excited to be lot myself from the a part of the other team.” players.

Cooper was also impressed by the Mastodons’ positive attitude so it was an easy decision to sign a letter of intent to join the team for the spring session.

Cooper’s mother, Marlaina, is thrilled about her daughter’s opportunity down south, though will miss her when she goes.

“I am excited for her. It’s a new journey. This is something she was looking forward to getting. But I’m sad at the same time because she’s going to be leaving us.’’

As a parent, Marlaina said it is satisfying to see her child succeed.

“All your hard work and time and money and everything you put into it was worth it,” she said.
