Christmas could have been difficult this year for some local families without the help of the Abbotsford Food Bank and Christmas Bureau, which provides those in need with a hamper of food and Christmas gifts for their children. Sarah Clegg, 34, and her 10-year-old daughter, Jaydah, are grateful for the help. Clegg, who has used the food bank for most of her life, said it is easy for people to judge. “You feel like you have to explain your whole life to someone to get their respect.” Sitting on a couch in her basement suite, Clegg’s voice shook as she recounted her life as one marred by abuse, drugs and poverty. Raised in a violent home, she was molested by a family friend when she was only four. She started smoking at the age of 11, and moved to drugs and alcohol by age 12. Clegg was struck by a car when she was 13, leaving her with constant back pain and unable to work. Clegg spent most of her teens and 20s addicted to drugs, spiralling so far out of control she duelled with death. They just want to see people do well in the community.” That spirit of generosity is a value that Clegg wants to instil in her daughter. “I try to teach my daughter that it’s better to give than to receive, so we made sure we donated $20 to the SPCA this Christmas. It might not be much, but it’s all we can give.”

City conducts marketing survey Taylor denies connection to YMCA project

A $22,000 telephone survey recently conducted for the City of Abbotsford has nothing to do with the YMCA bid currently before council, according to Mark Taylor. The city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture said 300 local residents were polled to acquire feedback on marketing and communication. The survey was coordinated by Sentis Market Research, a Vancouver-based company. “Sentis Research is our contractor and they hired Illuminata Marketing to do the survey,” explained Taylor. He said the city is trying to find out if the parks and rec department’s marketing efforts are reaching the public. “It’s based on getting a sense on how to communicate with them (the public) and increase our revenues
through marketing.” However, some residents feel the timing of the survey is suspect, considering the city recently gave approval in principle to a plan to pay $17.5 million towards a new YMCA facility on the old hospital grounds on McCallum Road. Elizabeth Gray was one of the 300 people contacted for the survey and she feels the city has “been down this road before.” She said telephone surveys were conducted by the city before last year’s water referendum – to decide whether the city should enter into a $300-million public-private partnership for a new water supply and treatment centre at Stave Lake. Similar polling preceded the Plan A projects decision (which included the construction of the Reach, the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports
Centre and improvements to the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.) “We don’t have the money to do this,” she said, adding she believes the survey is linked to the YMCA proposal. The survey was completed in two days and took about 15 minutes per respondent. They were asked 17 recreation-based questions and seven demographic profile questions (age, sex, income etc.). Taylor said the cost of the survey was included in the 2012 parks and recreation budget. He said more than $6 million in revenue is generated annually through recreation services, and maintained it’s “really important” that the city know if its marketing campaign is effective. Survey results and analysis are expected in the first two weeks of January.

Taylor Dueck was walking along Crescent Way in Abbotsford on Wednesday afternoon when he came upon an unusual sight. A seagull high in a tree was frantically flapping its wings, but wasn’t going anywhere. Dueck realized the bird was trapped, caught in what appeared to be string or a fishing line. The gull clearly needed some help. Dueck walked across the street to the MSA Society for Community living office, and a staff member there called around looking for assistance before dialing Elizabeth’s Wildlife Centre. Executive director Elizabeth Melnick suggested that maybe the fire department should be called. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) had aided with similar situations in the past, although Melnick hesitated to bother them, recognizing that human emergencies take precedence. Nevertheless, the call was made, and the firefighters were willing to help. A high ladder was put in place, firefighter Mike Hamilton climbed up, and used a pike pole to sever the fishing line. The bird quickly swooped away, seemingly unfazed by the predicament it had found itself in. Melnick arrived on the scene moments after the bird had been freed. “Bless your hearts. That’s really outstanding,” she told the firefighters.

Spa raises Holmberg House funds A charity event held at the European Day Spa & Salon has raised $750 for the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Holmberg House. The funds were raised through the spa’s Ladies’ Night, which involved participants paying $25 for an evening of snacks, champagne and their choice of three
spa services. Seven estheticians, two hairstylists and three reception staffers all donated their time that evening. Holmberg House is a hospice facility for people 19 years and older who are facing terminal illness. It is being built on the ground of the Dave Lede Campus of Care, next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Two men who police have said were involved in the United Nations Gang have been sentenced to jail terms for their role in a 2009 drug conspiracy in Abbotsford. Doug Vanalstine, 52, of Vernon, the alleged UN Gang leader at the time, received a 10-year jail term, but credit for time already served leaves him with three years and five months in prison. Daryl Johnson, 34, of Abbotsford was sentenced to eight years, which was reduced to seven years and two months for time served. The pair previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine, and were sentenced Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. A charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking was stayed against each of them. Charges were dropped against their co-accused, Nicholas Wester of Abbotsford, as part of their plea agreement. The three were among five arrested in Abbotsford in November 2009 following an undercover operation by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. Also arrested that day were Abbotsford’s Jarrod Bacon and Wayne Scott, who both were convicted earlier this year of conspiracy to traffic cocaine. Bacon and Scott were tied to the Red Scorpions gang, rivals of the UN Gang. Bacon is currently serving a 12-year jail term, while Scott was sentenced to three and a half years. Bacon now plans to appeal his sentence, saying it was too harsh, and the Crown is also appealing, seeking a longer term. The undercover operation involved the use of a police agent who negotiated with the players for the movement of cocaine from Mexico in exchange for cash. Much of the discussions were recorded by wiretaps, forming the bulk of the Crown’s evidence.
No drugs or money ever changed hands with Bacon and West, but the other group turned over $100,000 cash in exchange for
100 kilograms of what they thought was cocaine, but was mostly fake. Meanwhile, Wester is currently going
through the court system in relation to another case. He was charged, along with five others, with production of a controlled
substance in Mission in 2009. That matter is scheduled to go to trial Jan. 14 in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack.

The Abbotsford board of education has agreed to donate the old South Poplar Schoolhouse to the MSA Museum Society. The society hopes to relocate the old building to the Trethewey House heritage site on Ware Street at Mill Lake to form one of the cornerstones of its proposed Discovery Village. The school is currently situated adjacent to South Poplar Traditional School at the corner of Huntingdon and Gladwin roads. The Discovery Village proposal features a 7,000-squarefoot “discovery centre” and a 3,000-square-foot covered
stage encompassing much of the area around Mill Lake. The museum society wants to feature interpretive heritage tours, including First Nations, industry, agriculture, ecology, transportation and walking tours. South Poplar School would be restored and used at the site as a heritage schoolhouse. School district spokesman Dave Stephen said there are still a number of steps required – through the Ministry of Education – before the building can be moved. Once all details are finalized, a bylaw will be brought before the board of education for final approval.

Running down the list of activities Chelsea Jenner is involved in, you wonder how she managed to find time to become an elite softball player. In addition to juggling her Grade 12 studies at Abbotsford Christian and a parttime job at McDonald’s, she plays clarinet in her school’s concert band and saxophone in the jazz band. On top of that, she runs cross-country and track in the softball off-season, and trains at Power Zone Academy and with the Ignite Athlete Development Program through Pacific Sport. It makes for a hectic schedule with conflicts galore, and looking ahead at her jampacked 2013 calendar, Jenner was worried she might even have to skip her own senior prom. Regional tryouts for the junior national softball team are being held in Cloverdale that same May weekend. But as of right now, it looks like she’ll be able to celebrate with her grad class. “If I’ve made the first round of cuts, they’ll give me the evening off so I can go to my prom,” she explained with a chuckle. “Thankfully I’ll get to go, but it’s going to be crazy. I’ll be up all night, and then have to perform again the next day. “I don’t know how I’m going to handle it. But I’m going to do it.” That readiness to take on challenges – not to mention the discipline required to master so many varied pursuits – has fueled Jenner’s rise to become one of Canada’s most promising softball prospects. The 17-year-old centre fielder has excelled at the national championships the past two summers with Team B.C., and she was called up by the Canadian senior women’s national team to serve as a pinch runner at the Canadian Open International Championships held last July at Softball City in Surrey. San Jose State University, an NCAA Div. 1 program, took notice, and she recently signed a letter of intent to seal a

So when Turner wanted to know more about this kid from Canada, he got a glowing reference he could really trust. “She has all the right skills,” Paetkau said of Jenner. “She has a strong arm, she’s quick, she puts the ball into play. On defence and on offence, she’s an asset to

any team. “But the one thing about her that sets her apart is, she’s very consistent. She doesn’t seem to go through a lot of peaks and valleys, where you play really well and then you play really bad – those 0-for20 slumps, and then you go 7-for-10. She doesn’t have a lot of games where she doesn’t get on base, and that’s hard to do in our game.”

The Abbotsford Heat failed to shake their offensive malaise last Wednesday, as they suffered a 1-0 loss to the Chicago Wolves on the road. Wolves goalie Matt Climie stopped all 25 shots the Heat sent his way, and Darren Haydar’s goal at 10:02 of the first period stood up as the gamewinner for the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate. Abby goalie Barry Brust played well, turning aside 33 of 34 Chicago shots, but he nevertheless suffered his first regulation defeat of the season. The Heat had been 8-0-2 in Brust’s
first 10 starts; he still leads the AHL in goals against average (1.16) and save percentage (.955). The Heat played backto-back road games vs. the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday and the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday before dispersing for a fourday Christmas break, but those results were u n available at press time (visit abbynews.com for updates). The players and coaches reconvene in Chicago on Dec. 27 to prepare for a rematch with
the Wolves on Dec. 29. Abbotsford (15-6-6, 36 points) was still atop the Western Conference, but they’ve struggled mightily to put the puck in the net during the month of December. They haven’t scored more than three goals in a game since a 5-1 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Nov. 30, and they’re averaging 1.13 goals per game over their last eight contests. The Wolves (13-9-3, 29 points) were eighth in the Western Conference.
The Heat dressed just five defencemen for Wednesday’s tilt – Steve McCarthy and Brady Lamb were unavailable due to minor injuries, and Joe Piskula sat out due to illness. Abbotsford rugby stars off to Vegas
The first ever B.C. under18 women’s seven-a-side team boasts a distinct Abbotsford flavour. Five athletes with local connections have been named to the 12-player provincial squad, which will participate in the 2013 Las Vegas International Sevens, Feb. 7-9. Local high schoolers Sophia DeGianni (Yale), Gurpreet Dhaliwal
(Abbotsford Senior) and Autumn Garrett (Robert Bateman) will be joined on the squad by Abbotsford Rugby Football Club players Chelsea and Mackenzie Fowler out of Mission’s Heritage Park Secondary. All five players were part of the Fraser Valley U17 teams which finished first and second at the B.C. Summer Games in Surrey in July.
A sixth Abbotsford athlete, Morgan Walker, has been named a non-traveling reserve. B.C.’s provincial boys sevens teams have fared well at the Las Vegas Invitational, winning the elite and high school divisions in 2012. This is the inaugural year for the women’s program, however, and with the recent hire of BC Rugby girls
youth development officer Marlene Donaldson, further emphasis is being placed on seeing both programs provided with opportunities to compete. “This team was selected from over 45 athletes who attended the trial camps,” Donaldson said. “The selections reflect the strength of club and high school girls programs in Cowichan and the Fraser Valley.”
Kooner picked for Major Midget League all-star game Dylan Kooner of the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds has been chosen for the B.C. Major Midget
League all-star game. Kooner, a forward, leads the Thunderbirds (for-
merly known as the Fraser Valley Bruins) in scoring with eight goals and 10 assists in
23 games. The local squad sits ninth in the 11-team BCMML with a 4-18-2 record.
The all-star game goes Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
