More jobs, a stronger economy and greater ties with the Asia Pacific market is what the B.C. government’s new aviation strategy is promising to bring to the province.

The Connecting with the World Aviation Strategy, announced at the Langley Regional Airport on Friday, looks at expanding air services and increasing access to international markets. The aim is to make the province more competitive in the global aviation market and attract Asia Pacific passenger and cargo business.

This has huge implications for Langley Regional Airport, which is centrally located near Vancouver, the United States and the Pacific Rim. “This is going to mean jobs throughout all sorts of different industries in British Columbia and it has an impact on local communities as we see in Langley,” said Mary Polak, Langley MLA and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“This is a future looking strategy, but we have learned from what we’ve done in the past that the type of work we can do in local airports has a much broader impact than just our initial investment. Langley is an excellent example of that.”

Coinciding with the announcement of the new aviation strategy, Vector Aerospace, one of the major employers at Langley Regional Airport, announced it is expanding its facilities in Langley from a 66,000 square foot building to a 104,000 square foot building. This will add a further 180 jobs, attract additional major investments and nearly double the technical activity and pro-

“We certainly look at this as an early Christmas present for our airport, for our community and the province,” Froese said. “Jobs mean people and we have lots of room for people and families to move in, and it is extremely gratifying to see our economy grow.”

Since 2004, close to $16 million has been injected into the airport from the private sector, the province and the Township, for upgrades including a new

taxiway and paving of a second runway.

The B.C. aviation strategy and Vector Aerospace expansion will ensure these important investments will continue.

“B.C. has the potential to be a preeminent aviation gateway between Asia and the Americas,” Polak said.

“Through the B.C. aviation strategy, we can strengthen and grow our aviation sector, support the BC Jobs Plan, help B.C. move goods to international markets and further open our province to investment.”

A written statement released by CFSEU media relations officer Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said the uniformed officers were acting on a tip.

Charges are pending against a 31-year old man and a 25-year old man, both of no fixed address, for allegedly breaching their firearms prohibition orders and firearms-related offenses related to previous possession of firearms.

Both are known to police and have gang ties, the Houghton statement said.

They are being held in custody pending charges.

CFSEU is an integrated joint forces operation with officers from federal, provincial and municipal agencies to fight organized crime groups and gangs in B.C. It includes officers from the Abbotsford Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Central Saanich Police, Delta Police, New Westminster Police, Organized Crime Agency of B.C., Port Moody Police, RCMP, Saanich Police, Transit police, Vancouver Police, Victoria Police and West Vancouver Police.

Two men face variety of weapons charges

Two men are facing weapons-related charges following a Friday afternoon arrest in Langley’s Walnut Grove neighbourhood.

Officers with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) took the pair into custody shortly before 2:30 p.m. near 90A Avenue and 204 Street, a cul-de-sac of large houses on big lots with welllandscaped yards.

Majority decline travel allowance Mayor Jack Froese has turned down a controversial travel allowance proposed by a independent remuneration task force.

In a Dec. 19 email to The Times, Township corporate media liaison Erin McKay said the mayor had indicated as early as Dec. 5 that he would not be accepting the increase.

In response to a Times follow-up query, McKay confirmed that the mayor had, in fact, signed the waiver.

The mayor’s decision means a majority of council has now formally rejected the proposed travel allowance.

A Times survey shows at least four councillors, David Davis, Charlie Fox, Bob Long and Kim Richter, have turned down the travel allowance and at least three, Steve Ferguson, Grant Ward and Bev Dornan, have accepted it.

Councillor Michelle Sparrow said she would decide over the holiday break.

The signed waivers accepting or rejecting the allowance were supposed to be turned in to the Township hall Human Resources office by Friday, Dec. 14.

Councillors who say no have the option of changing their mind “at any time in the future” the waiver form notes.

The travel allowance would have added $850 a month to the mayor’s compensation and will add $340 a month to the three councillors who accepted, Ward, Dornan and Ferguson.

Ward has said council should follow the recommendations of the independent council remuneration task force that proposed it. Ferguson has said he plans to donate the money to charity.

Dornan said she donates a portion of her salary to charity.

Those who rejected the allowance have cited a variety of reasons.

Davis said he is still not comfortable deciding his own pay hike.

Fox said members of council already get a break on their travel costs, courtesy of a Revenue Canada policy that elected municipal officials can avoid paying taxes on up to a third of their annual salary by declaring it to be an “expense allowance” which includes “mileage or other traveling allowance.”

Long said he would be declining “at least for this year” because he doesn’t travel as much as some other members of council.

Richter said it was too soon after the December 2011 council pay hikes.

A year ago, the mayor’s annual salary went up by 12.6 per cent and councillor pay rates rose by 19 percent in what the task force referred to as a “catch-up” hike after several years of no raises.

Lawsuit on hold as BC Conservatives try TODAY’S to resolve differences BIG DEAL! Dan Ferguson Times Reporter

A lawsuit by three ousted BC Conservative party dissidents against the party has been put on hold, while the two sides try to resolve their differences out of court.

Court records show the matter was adjourned generally following a Dec. 7 appearance in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

Under court rules, the lawsuit can be reinstated if no agreement is reached.

One of the three dissidents, Ariane Eckardt, former president of the Burnaby North constituency association, said they were close to a settlement with the party in early December, about the time the adjournment was made, but talks have since bogged down.

“They keep sending us counter-proposals,” Eckardt said Sunday (Dec. 22) “It’s ridiculous that it has taken this long.”

The Conservative party did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When the lawsuit was originally filed in November, BC Conservative party president Al Siebring said he would not make a statement because the matter was before the courts.

Eckardt, Allison Patton, former president of the SurreyWhite Rock BC Conservative constituency association; and John Crocock, a Burnaby businessman who unsuccessfully campaigned for party vicepresident, were ejected for publicly calling on Cummins to step down.

The year in review – a look back at 2012 With the New Year almost upon us, it is time once again to take a look back at the year that was. Below is a selection of the top stories reported in the Langley Times in 2012.

January The Albion ferries, made obsolete by the Goldens Ears Bridge, which had been languishing at a dock in Maple Ridge for more than two years were finally sold.

The MV Kulleet and the MV Klatawa were sold for $400,000 to Tidal Towing, a Port Coquitlam-based marine transport company.

The ferries crossed the Fraser River between Maple Ridge and Fort Langley for 50 years until 2009 when the Golden Ears Bridge opened.

Praise for district, police

The value of being prepared

angley School District deserves commendation for its swift and public response to a possible threat at Brookswood Secondary on Friday, Dec. 21.

School officials became aware sometime before school started that day of a possible threat being circulated online. Given the rapidity with which such threats spread, a swift response was needed.

Langley RCMP were alerted and were on duty at the school as students arrived. Students were kept in their classrooms in the early part of the day as the threat was completely checked out, and then were able to go about their day normally.

Police remained on duty at the school, and the school district was very open about what was happening, keeping parents and the wider community on top of the issue by communicating very quickly and openly.

This type of transparent communication has not always been the case with Langley School District. In the past, serious incidents at schools have been kept wrapped in secrecy, communications weren’t alway timely and information has been slow in reaching parents, naturally leading to concerns.

There appears to be a genuinely new culture of openness and accountability at the district, and this is an important and welcome step in the right direction.

Given the high level of concern about safety at schools, particularly in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre on Dec. 14, the response to a perceived threat at Brookswood is commendable.

The professional response of Langley RCMP is also welcomed, and their proactive and significant approach to this situation was an important reason why this threat quickly fizzled.

Both agencies, who have great responsibilities in our community — one for the education and safety of students, and the other for ensuring public safety — did a commendable job.

At this time of year, when we reflect on the gifts we receive and the changing of the calendar, it is appropriate to be thankful for public agencies like these two.

Both did their jobs swiftly, competently and always with the best interests of our young people at heart.

o, if you’re reading this, we’ve survived another threat of an imminent apocalypse.

The Mayan long calendar ended Dec. 21 at 11:11 a.m. GMT, and many thought this abrupt, calculated ending was proof positive the world as we know it was coming to an end.

According to Mayan scholars, this wasn’t exactly what the ancient civilization foretold, but rather that a new age would begin.

But this pesky detail didn’t stop quite a few million people worldwide from going well over the border of reason, and led to some stockpiling of food, fuel, and even ammunition in certain cases.

We understand there will always be those in every society who take scares — real or imagined — to heart and over worry.

However, there is some wisdom in emergency preparedness, and lessons to be learned.

The multitude of examples in the past year, including Hurricane Sandy, have clearly demonstrated most people’s ignorance for being ready for a natural disaster, or any other kind of major infrastructure interruption.

There’s nothing alarmist or weird about ensuring you have at least three days worth of water and food for each member of your family, as well as first aid supplies and necessary medications.

And for those who commute, it has long been recommended that people have some bottled water, nourishment and a good pair of walking shoes stashed in the trunk or your office drawer to help you get home.

Take the time to be prepared to care for your family. No one else might be coming for a while.

Simple act of kindness Being sold down affected many people greasy mine shaft Editor: I wanted to write a short letter to The Times, in hope that the person who took time out of their busy day to stop, pick up my lost keys and turn them into the customer service desk at Willowbrook Shopping Centre, will read it.

I want to tell you that your small act of kindness affected many people.

I am a local entertainer, I sing and perform music for events, and I happened to be on my way to a special Christmas performance at Brookside Lodge, when I decided to stop and do a little shopping before I went there.

The senior residents at Brookside Lodge look forward to parties, as their families visit, and it’s so important to them to share a meal and sing some Christmas songs with their loved ones.

When I discovered my keys had fallen out of my pocket, I was very upset.

I frantically retraced my steps, hoping and praying my keys would be on the ground in the mall somewhere, but they were nowhere to be found. All my musical equipment was in the car, and I was now due to be at the performance in half an hour.

I pictured the seniors all sitting waiting for me to be there and I was in tears, thinking they would be so disappointed that I did not come to sing for them.

When I decided to check the customer service desk and my keys were there, I cried tears of joy. Somebody had cared enough to stop and turn them in.

Editor: B.C. mining jobs are being given to temporary foreign workers. In Tumbler Ridge, Chinese-owned HD Mining has received permission to import 200 temporary underground coal miners, for their Murray Creek mine.And that’s just the first wave, as other Chinese mining companies want to import more than 2,000 miners to B.C.’s North for copper, gold, coal, etc.

The fix is in, as 350 Canadians applied for these jobs at HD Mining and not one qualified. One of the qualifiers is that you have to speak Mandarin.

Jim Sinclair of the B.C. Federation of Labour revealed that HD Mining does not have to hire a Canadian worker for four and one-half years and that a ‘temporary’ job can last 14 and one-half years. What government genius dreamed this up? Chinese-owned HD Mines makes profits with cheap imported labour to mine and ship our resources to China to make steel; the Chinese miners send their wages back home to China; China makes the steel with their jobs and sells the steel back to us.

The money is not recycling spinoffs in our economy but is mostly going to China’s benefit. We are subsidiz-

down and does not respond too much, actually sat up and sang along with songs she knew. One family told me that their elderly Dad cried during Silent Night, a good cry because his family was there.

So you see dear person who returned my keys, your one little good deed made a difference for so many people. Thank you for that small act of kindness.

The Christmas spirit is about doing things for others expecting nothing in return, to be kind, and to take time to be helpful.

That is what it means to be a good Canadian, I hope that person reads this letter, as I want to say thank you and wish them a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Put money where mouth is Editor:Enbridge Inc. is spending a lot of money advertising in the newspapers and on TV in an attempt to persuade people that their planned Northern Gateway pipeline will really be safe.

Enbridge knows that this is the number one concern of the majority of people in B.C. around this project, and their political pals in Victoria and Ottawa will not be able to push this through unless the safety issue disappears.

It is significant that Enbridge Inc. has set up a special company for this project (Northern Gateway Pipelines, Inc. or NGPI). This sounds reasonable until it is The

realized that setting up NGPI breaks the liability ties to the principal multi-billion company (with $10 billion Canadian in equity).

If there were a major disaster, at sea or on land, that looked as though it was going to cost billions to fix and clean up, then Enbridge Inc.’s management could just walk away scot-free after declaring NGPI bankrupt.

Commercial law limits the liability of the owners of any company (like NGPI) to its issued capital, which by design is a small fraction of Enbridge’s capitalization.

Four years ago, a group of Enbridge

shareholders demanded that their board show how the shareholders could be protected from such possibilities. Well, now we can see how the clever lawyers in Calgary came up with a foolproof protection scheme — it certainly protects Enbridge shareholders.

If Enbridge Inc. is convinced that their project is safe, let them buy a commercial indemnity policy, say for $1 billion (the Exxon Valdez spill cost half that), from the free enterprise insurance industry (not the B.C. government that is drooling over the expected $2 billion in royalties).

If the NGPI plans

really are safe, then Enbridge should be able to buy a 30-year policy to pay for any cleanups at a reasonable price.

If they cannot do so, then the independent risk assessment market has voted with its wallet that this is not a safe project.

Let Enbridge Inc. really put its money into safety and not just into smooth-talking advertisements and prove to the people of B.C., in advance, that this project is truly low-risk. It is significant that the BC Liberals have not yet insisted on this independent proof of safety.

Christy Clark is on the radio telling us in millions of dollars worth of ads how wonderful her jobs program is, while you stand in the unemployment line, looking like a Dr. Seuss character. United Steel Workers tried real hard to find out who owned HD Mining, with the help of a Beijing University researcher, assisted by experts in China.

Huiyong Holdings BC Ltd. holds 55 per cent of HD Mining. But who owns Huiyong is a mystery, and it could be a Chinese state-owned shell company. Then 40 per cent of HD Mining is owned by Canadian Dehua, which is owned

by Chinese state-owned corporations. Not surprisingly, Elections BC shows the BC Liberals received donations of $20,810 in 2011 and 2012 from Canadian Dehua International Mines Group Inc. Surely Clark and her gang wouldn’t sell us down the greasy mine shaft for such a paltry sum. There has to be more to it.

Our governments are misleading and selling us out in the dumbest way possible, and our MLAs and MPs owe us some big explanations.

Steve, use travel allowance to fix computer and read sent emails

Editor I am in full agreement that Councillor Steve Ferguson should accept the travel allowance so he could at least drive to my house which is four blocks away from his home.

Either that, or he could spend the money to have his broken computer fixed, as I am still awaiting a response or at least a “read response” from my email to him from on July 14, 2012 regarding the Brookswood/Fernridge development.

I am sure he will get back to me before election time. Still waiting, Steve.

Rescue workers had to use the ‘jaws of life’ to free an injured woman from the wreckage of her small car after a collision with a large pickup truck at 203 Street and Fraser Highway on Jan. 10.

••• Five paintings were stolen from Country Lane Antiques in Fort Langley during a break-in on Jan. 1. Someone smashed in a window to gain entry to the store and fled before police could arrive. The thief stole three Al Colton paintings, a piece by Jack Turpin and a limited-edtion Alan Wylie, one of 25 prints. This was the first breakin at Country Lane since it opened six years ago.

••• The world’s best curlers battled it out at the Langley Events Centre for the eight annual World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling from Jan. 12 to 15. More than 20,000 spectators came out to watch six teams, both men’s and women’s, from North America versus six from the rest of the world compete in a unique curling format. Over four days the teams squared off in regular team games, mixed doubles, singles, mixed skins and skins games. Team World won the Cup 235-135.

••• Two motorists, one of them a police officer, jumped out of their vehicles and ran to the aid of a young woman trapped in a white Honda Accord that was struck by a red Ford F350 pickup in the intersection of Fraser Highway and 203 Street.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m. on Jan. 10. Langley City firefighters used the Jaws of Life to lift away the buckled door and frame to free the trapped 19-yearold Langley woman, who police say suffered life-threatening injuries. She was transported to hospital by Air Ambulance.

••• Two decades after he molested two young boys in Langley, 54-year-old Peter Littleboy received a conditional sentence of two years less a day plus another two years on parole. Both of the victims have struggled with the

emotional fallout from what happened between 1989 and 1992, they said in Surrey Provincial Court. The two men were 11 and 12 at the time.

••• Langley teen Kato Burgess, 16, died on Jan. 15 after taking ecstasy with friends the night before.

The Facebook page In Loving Memory of Kato Burgess mourned his death and was full of testimonials, tributes, links to songs, news stories and even advice about choosing your friends wisely and not doing drugs. Burgess was the sixth ecstasy-related death in B.C. in six months.

••• Close to 7,000 residents of the City and Township signed petitions asking the two councils to commission a study about the merits and drawbacks of Langley reunification. The signed petitions were delivered to the respective city halls on Jan. 17. The petitions requested the two councils work together and commission “an independent study of the feasibility of reunification as one municipality.”

The City of Langley dismissed the petition, saying when it comes to amalgamation, most often the bad outweighs the good. “I’ve said we don’t see a need (for a Langley-specific report) because a number of studies have already been done,” City Mayor Peter Fassbender said.

••• Saying he didn’t believe the testimony of Brent Parent, a B.C. Supreme Court judge convicted the 42-year-old Langley man of three road-rage-related charges in the death of Silas O’Brien, 21, of Abbotsford on March 13, 2008.

Langley, the Canadian Little League champions, is made up of 11, 12 and 13-year-old baseball players.

The team was supposed to face Uganda in the opener of the Little League World Series in August, 2011, but the Ugandan players were denied visas to enter the United States, due to discrepancies in their paperwork. After hearing about their plight, Vancouver’s Ruth Hoffman came up with the idea to send the Langley team to Uganda. It was organized by Right To Play, a humanitarian non-profit organization.

Uganda beat Langley 2-1 when they played, and the other two games saw the teams mix their players.

February On Feb. 3, Nico Pike was walking home from school on 29 Avenue in Aldergrove when he found himself in the path of a pickup truck driven by a local mother. He sustained several injuries and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. There was an outpouring of financial and moral support for the Pike family in the community, along with a growling clamour for improvements to pedestrian safety on 29 Avenue.

••• Surrey man Steven Fayant, 19, was charged with aggregated assault for the stabbing of a 41-year-old Langley man, who was getting off the bus near Aldergrove Centre Mall on Feb. 21. ••• A cold-blooded killer who hid out at a Fort Langley home in January 2008, was spared the death penalty because of a cross-border extradition deal that made the U.S. promise to spare his life from lethal injection. On March 15, a jury in Sacramento, California took less than three hours to find fugitive Arthur Carnes, 40, guilty of first degree murder in the dismembering death of Matthew Alan Seybert, 41. He was sentenced

to 50 years to life in prison later in April.

••• The campaign contributions for the November, 2011 municipal election were released, showing that the three-way race for the mayor’s chair on Township council was the most expensive mayor’s race in Township history. More than $240,000 was spent by candidates Jack Froese, Mel Kositsky and Rick Green.

The Vote Langley Now slate put together by incumbent Green spent $87,569, and Green himself spent another $8,800 on his own campaign.

He came third with 4,466 votes. Froese, the newcomer who won the election with 7,706 votes, spent $79,533, while longtime councillor Mel Kositsky, who finished second with 6,522 votes spent $70,246.

It will include six floors of commercial space, topped with a roof garden and 46 residential units.

••• A 24-year-veteran of the RCMP was suspended from duty and faced a charge of careless use of a firearm, after Langley Mounties responded to a call of shots fired around 9 p.m. on March. 29. Const.

Michael Roe, 46, was arrested without incident outside his Langley home and his duty pistol was siezed. Roe was off duty when a number of shots were fired from his duty pistol into the wall of his residence. His wife and children were home at the time, but no one was injured.

Three organ transplant recipients and one organ donor hand-delivered some Christmas cheer in the form of big tins of popcorn to Langley Memorial Hospital’s physicians and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit and operating room last week (Dec. 17).

“We try to go to as many hospitals as we can this time of year,” said heart transplant recipient Kristy Coldwell.

“They may lose a patient here and those persons organs may save a life somewhere else. We want to acknowledge the work they do.”

The Squamish Helping Hands Society organizes a variety of shelter and food programs to assist those in need and is a recipient charity of the Blanket Drive.

“The blanket and clothing donations we get not only help our clients, the act of giving itself recognizes a much deeper understanding of the human need there is in our communities and how important it is for us to take care of each other,” said Maureen Mackell, executive director.

That sentiment was echoed by Andy Kwak, executive director of The Salvation Army Centre of Hope in Abbotsford.

“Our mission is to bring warmth, nutrition and shelter to those who need it, so you can imagine how helpful hundreds of bags of clothing and blankets are to the people we serve.

We really appreciate the effort that realtors put into this drive and their support throughout the entire year.”

Since 1994, the Blanket Drive has grown to become the largest collection of its kind in the Lower Mainland assisting over 205,000 people over those years.

Donations come from realtors, their clients, the general public, corporations, retailers, community groups and schools. Everyone works together to make the drive a success.

Early commitment for TWU Spartans women’s basketball team sign guard, forward Christmas came early for the Trinity Western Spartans.

The women’s basketball team announced the commitments of forward Kayla Gordon and guard Jenna Bracken on Dec. 10.

This marks coach Cheryl Jean-Paul’s two earliest signings since she took the job in 2010.

Bracken, who attends Strathcona Christian Academy, is a 5-foot-11 shooting guard. She helped her school place fourth at the 2012 AA provincial championship, averaging 16 points per game, as well as helping Team Alberta place seventh at the

“She brings in a gritty mindset and a very competitive attitude, yet she never compromises who she is as a person,” said Jean-Paul.

“For me, TWU has always been my dream school,” Bracken said.

“It had everything I wanted: a Christian education, an amazing location and the chance to play at the CIS level.

“I’m very excited to become a Spartan.”

“She is extremely athletic, runs the floor well and works hard every time she steps on the court,” said Strathcona Christian coach Michelle Anderson.

Gordon, a 5-foot-11 forward at Cedars Christian in Prince George, has been a dominant presence on the court for

several years.

She has also played on Team B.C. every year since making it on the U14 squad.

Last year, she helped the U17 team win third at the Canadian national championships, earning second team all-star honours after averaging 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

At the high school level, she helped Cedars Christian win silver at both the 2011 and 2012 Single A provincial championships. She was a first team all-star at both tournaments.

“Playing with the Basketball BC provincial teams has really brought out her ability to stand out and define herself as an athlete who has a lot of potential to be a significant player at the next level,” said Jean-Paul.

A pair of Langley swimmers were in Oregon up against some of the world’s fastest swimmers under the age of 18.

Langley Olympians’ Hillary Metcalfe, 14, and Martha Metcalfe, 16, were at the Paul Bergen Junior International Meet Dec. 7 to 9.

Hillary Metcalfe set a pair of club records in the 50 breast and 400 IM and qualified for the senior nationals in the 50 breast and 200 breast events.

Spartans restock with latest batch of recruits Fresh off helping the Langley Christian Lightning capture the gold medal at the senior boys’ volleyball AA level earlier this month, Mike Grypsma was announced as part of Trinity Western Spartans 2013 recruiting class.

Grypsma and Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) — both outside hitters — setter Adam Schriemer (Winnipeg, Man.) and middle Levi Wolthuis (Sturgeon County, Alta.) were all announced as the newest Spartan recruits.

“With the addition of these four to last year’s

recruiting class (Tyler Heppell, Ryan Sclater and Scott Plocktis) the future cycle is now complete and I can’t wait to see all of them in the gym together,” said Trinity Western coach Ben Josephson.

“These four have size, athleticism, and, above all, (an) unquenchable work ethic.

“The future looks bright for Spartans men’s volleyball and I couldn’t be more excited to get a front row seat to the show.”

medal in each of the past three seasons at provincials, including the gold medal on Dec. 1, earning second team all-star honours in the process.

He has also played for the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club since he was 14, helping the program win gold at provincials at the U16 and U18 levels.

“Mike has been developed in our own club program, FVVC, where I had the pleasure of coaching him personally last season,” Josephson said.

PRESENTS Slipping and falling on ice Have you fallen on an icy patch on someone else’s driveway or parking lot and hurt yourself seriously? You may be entitled to damages. A person or company who owns or controls property must be sufficiently careful to maintain their property and take basic steps to protect against the risk of mishap.

Take a couple of recent cases, where the B.C. courts awarded $40,000 and $25,000, respectively, for pain and suffering, in addition to other amounts such as lost wages.

In the first case, Mr. F slipped on a patch of water-covered black ice (which he didn’t see) in an Esso service station, when exiting a wand-operated car wash to get his wash code from a kiosk. He fell down backwards, hitting his head and dislocating his right knee-cap so badly that the injury still troubled him years later. The trial court concluded that he wasn’t himself careless or partly to blame (a question that is almost always explored in “slip and fall” cases).

However, while the car wash owner and its operator had a maintenance program involving salting to deal with potential ice problems, there was a particular trouble spot where the accident happened, which was prone to icy patches. Water dripping from cars exiting the car wash could hide the ice and also washed away salt, and additional salt was only applied after an attendant noticed that ice had formed.

The court decided that some simple and inexpensive steps could have been taken to warn customers of this particular trouble spot, such as putting out orange cylindrical cones or warning signs. This wasn’t done.

The B.C. Court of Appeal agreed with the trial judge, citing the Occupiers Liability Act. Essentially, an owner or occupier of property must take reasonable care to ensure that people who come onto their property will be

reasonably safe.

The second case involved a residential landlord-tenant situation. Mrs. O slipped and fell on an icy patch in the sloped driveway as she walked from her designated parking spot to the pathway and steps leading to her basement suite. She hurt her hip and strained her shoulder and neck a little. But she also suffered a more serious second degree ankle sprain, which continued to plague her despite medical treatment. The sprain prevented her from fully enjoying many of the activities that she used to do, such as search and rescue volunteer work.

Again, Mrs. O herself wasn’t careless or partly to blame. However, according to residential tenancy laws, the landlord was responsible to put in place and carry out a better system to prevent this kind of accident, like putting down salt or some kind of traction agent. Shovelling the driveway wasn’t good enough to deal with the ice problem. Also, when Mrs. O came home, the icy area in front of the garage was in the dark, because the lights illuminating the area, which had to be turned on from inside the house, were off. The simple precaution of installing lighting that worked on a timer or motion detector had not been taken.

If you’re hurt in a slip and fall on ice, see your lawyer. Note that there are often very short deadlines for making a claim if the property involves a municipal or city sidewalk or lot. Home owners or businesses who face a claim should check their insurance policy for liability coverage and notify their insurer promptly.

“There was no doubt in my mind that I would attend TWU after graduating,” he said, noting the school’s academic reputation as well as their campus atmosphere as reasons he wanted to attend the Langley university.

“But being able to play volleyball there was a dream come true and (I) still cannot believe that this is happening.”

Scheerhoorn is a six-foot-seven outside hitter and is the Spartans’ first-ever Ontario recruit.

He has guided Quinte Christian to three consecutive gold

medals as well as silver and bronze with his club teams.

Schriemer is a six-foot-six setter who guided his high school team to the 4A Manitoba championship this past season.

He has also won gold (2011), silver (2009) and bronze (2010) at the club level.

The 6-foot-6 Wolthuis has earned five gold medals at the provincial level and two gold medals at the national level, including MVP at the 2010 nationals. His high school team won silver this past season.

“These four are all coming off extremely successful high school and club careers.

“I believe winning is a learned trait, not trained,” Josephson said.

“So with all four having experienced what it takes to win, I believe they will help our Spartan men’s volleyball program continue in our tradition of competing for national titles.”

Sports enthusiasts needed Volunteers needed to help encourage children to be more active Sports enthusiasts from the Lower Mainland are being recruited to work with elementary-school-age children to encourage them to be more active.

SOAR (Sharing Our Activities and Resources) is an initiative developed by Tennis BC, British Columbia Golf and Curl BC. In partnership with the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, the not-for-profit groups are recruiting individuals to be trained in the delivery of three sports programs.

Instructors will go to schools in the Lower Mainland where there are high numbers of First Nations students, but all schools interested in school sports will also be able to request the program.

The training takes place from Jan. 13 to 16 in Coquitlam.

Kodiaks flying high as 2012 comes to close White-hot Aldergrove junior B hockey club closes on seven-game winning streak The Aldergrove Kodiaks are sad to see 2012 come to an end.

The junior B hockey club scored a 3-2 victory over the visiting Delta Ice Hawks on Dec. 19 at the Aldergrove Arena, the team’s seventh straight victory, which includes a perfect month of December (6-0).

Against the Ice Hawks, Roshen Jaswal scored a power play goal with nine minutes to play, snapping a 2-2 tie.

Tyson Solotki and Stephen Ryan had staked the Kodiaks to a 2-0 lead with goals 39 seconds apart in the first period.

Delta chipped away at the lead with a goal from Tanner Gattinger in the second period and then Michael Olson-Eyre at the nineminute mark of the third.

But the Kodiaks were given a

four-minute power play and made the most of their opportunity.

Mark Meniccuci stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced.

The win improved Aldergrove to 17-11-1-0 while the loss was just the eighth this season in 30 games for Delta.

In Aldergrove’s two previous games, they defeated the Richmond Sockeyes 5-3 and the Mission City Outlaws 6-2.

The Sockeyes are the top team in the entire PIJHL with 43 points.

The Kodiaks trailed 3-2 early in the third period, but rallied back to score three times to defeat Mission.

A big reason for the team’s success is in goal as Mark Meniccuci has put up some outstanding numbers.

The goaltender leads the league in save percentage at .935 and is second in goals against at 2.18.

The Kodiaks are in the middle of their holiday break and return to action on Jan. 2 when they host the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. That game is at 715 p.m. at Aldergrove Arena.
