SD8 says no to ministry’s savings request

No can do. That’s the message from the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board to the educa-

tion minister’s request to find 1.5 per cent in savings to be used in upcoming contract negotiations with CUPE. On Dec. 3, after three meetings to discuss Education Minister Don McRae’s request that went out to all

boards of education in the province last month, board chair Melanie Joy, the Creston trustee, wrote “to advise the minister that it cannot meet the target of 1.5 per cent savings in the 2012-2013 fiscal year.”

McRae’s letter said that under his government’s co-operative gains mandate, wage increases can only be offered if they come out of savings found in the employers’ budgets.

T-Cats lose to Rockets

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats have slipped into last place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League following a Dec. 20 loss to the divisionleading Golden Rockets.

“We had a few really good chances early and couldn’t score,” said Thunder Cats head coach Josh Hepditch.

The Rockets scored three goals in the first period — a hat trick by Connor Beauchemin, including two power-play

goals — and one early in the second before Thunder Cat Matthew Murray scored on a power play at 17:54. A fifth Rockets goal came eight minutes later, and the sixth was scored late in the third period.

Shots were reasonably even, with the Rockets outshooting the Thunder Cats 28-23.

“They took advantage of opportunities,” said Hepditch.

The away game was their last before an eight-day Christmas break, which Hepditch hopes will give his team a chance to rest up and refocus.

“We’ve been playing kind of

shorthanded the last couple games,” he said. “It’s good for the guys to rest up and get rid of the injuries nagging them, and hopefully they’ll clear their minds a little and get back at it.”

Getting back at it won’t be as easy as it sounds — the Thunder Cats have three divisional game nearly back-toback, visiting the Fernie Ghostriders on Dec. 28 and the Rockets on Dec. 29, then hosting the Ghostriders on Dec. 31.

The Rockets currently lead the Eddie Mountain Division with 43 points, two ahead of the Ghostriders and five ahead of the Kimberley Dynamiters.

The Columbia Valley SHOWTIMES 7:30PM Rockies are in fourth with 27 points, and the Thunder Cats are a point behind.

increases to WorkSafeBC and Medical Services Plan premiums.

As well, she said, a sudden increase of student enrolment in mid-September (when Bountiful school was closed) was accommodated with no additional funding from the province.

And it only gets worse in 2013-2014, Joy continued. With the province phasing out funding protection for school districts with declining enrollment, the district will lose more than $730,000 and increases to the teachers’ pension plan will cost nearly $300,000. Another $95,000 loss could result from a reduced education plan supplement from the province.

“To add $330,000 in CUPE wages and wage sensitive benefits under the co-operative gains mandate to an already significant shortfall of $1.13 million is beyond the board’s ability to balance its budget without cutting educational programming to students and services to staff and families,” she wrote.

McRae said in his letter that it is possible that some of the savings might be found at the provincial bargaining level if changes can be made to the union’s benefits and disability package.

Joy said that the Kootenay Lake school district “will work with the government to come to resolve in balancing modest wage increases with quality delivery of public education” but that it also has a responsibility to its constituents.

“Most certainly the board of School District No. 8 strives to uphold public trust and confidence in public education,” she wrote. “To deviate from these commitments would severely impair the board in its service to its communities.”

Joy told the Advance on Tuesday that she expects that other school districts in the province will also be unable to find the savings directed by the ministry.

In addition to being chair of Kootenay Lake school district, Joy also chairs the BC Public School Employers’ Association, a position she says she will step down from in the spring.

Massage therapist joins global quest for peace

gathering, I immediately got tingles all over and I just felt like I was being pulled forward. I had never, until that moment, ever thought of going to the Middle East. But I felt a really strong pull that it was something I needed to do.”

She didn’t say anything on the phone, but afterwards she sent Drake an email, explaining her feeling about being called.

“I said, ‘If I don’t tell you now I might change my mind. There it is — I feel called.”

Drake invited Lee to be one of 33 women (“That was our goal, which we didn’t quite make”) who would travel to Jerusalem and meet with 33 women each from Israel and Palestine.

“So that’s how it came together,” Lee says. “So then we needed to fundraise to host this gathering. And that’s where this whole community was amazing.”

She met with BraveHeart Women Debby Johnson (who heads the local chapter), Amber Ward and Annette Agabob.

“We sat at Debby’s place, under a tree and drank lemonade and started to talk about ideas.

Within three hours we had a plan and we started doing the paperwork.”

A dance-walk was organized for the day of the Creston Valley Fall Fair and the group worked to spread word about the plan.

“Thank you to Creston, to everybody who gave money or their time. Creative Fix, Gigabytes, Vital Health, Golden Herbs, Natural Options, Creston Card and Stationary — they made donations and helped to collect funds. It was incredible, the response from people that really grasped the significance of this gathering. We would be planting a seed for harmony, that’s what we wanted. Just a ripple that carries out into the community and creates the beginning of a shift.”

Funds were raised to send Lee and two other woman — one each from Israel and Palestine — to the conference.

“I don’t like asking people for money, but it wasn’t for me — it was to be able to host this World Harmony event to plant a seed.”

Participants from the West were provided with direction and advice before their arrival in Israel. Their enthusiasm and love was important, but they were also advised to be calm and grounded, not to worry about things like not having enough

“We were going into a place that is very volatile and the emotions are very raw. We needed to set an example.”

She met with other members of the group after deplaning in Tel Aviv. They had a day together to get to know one another, then headed to the West Bank. The group was put up in an older hotel near Jerusalem, where the conference would take place.

“There was a glimmer of understanding among us that this was a really courageous thing for the Palestinian women to be doing. Even though the meeting was in the West Bank, it took a lot of courage for them to attend. But as we progressed, we understood that it took a lot of courage on the part of the Israeli women, too, and I guess the western women, as well, to do this whole project.”

When all the participants arrived, there were 21 western women and about 50 from Israel and Palestine.

“The first day, when everybody gathered, the women segregated themselves. You could feel the tension in the air, but you

Joining with a group of peaceseeking women who brought together women from Israel and Palestine last month was a giant step out of Kendra Lee’s comfort zone. The registered massage therapist, mother of three and grandmother of six was quite content with her mostly quiet and orderly life until a BraveHeart Women’s meeting presented her with an opportunity she couldn’t resist.

“I had never been overseas before,” she says. “I’ve been to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, across Canada and the States, but never overseas.”

How did she get involved in this odyssey for peace?

“I joined BraveHeart Women, an international organization, last March, and in June there was a phone conference with about 200 BraveHeart women. The founder, Ellie Drake, spoke of her vision of a global project where she would bring women together from conflict regions and we, as western women, would go to these regions and host meetings.”

Drake, a doctor, has considerable experience in bringing people together, and she envisioned women from around the world “holding a space” where those from conflicted areas could gather and seek ways of meeting in harmony and empowering one another.

“On the phone conference, after I heard her speak about the idea, she asked, ‘Does anybody feel called to do this? Because if you do, let me know,” Lee recalls.

“When she spoke about this

could also feel the courage. If they didn’t want peace, for something different to happen in their communities, they wouldn’t have been there.”

The differences were obvious, Kendra said, with women from each side having grown up seeing each other as the enemy. To help break down the barriers, Drake assigned each woman in the room a new name.

“We were all named Harmony,” she smiles. “And we were all given a necklace with a sacred geometric shape, but they were all slightly different, to represent that we are all individuals. We went through a drumming exercise. We learned how to work together — that was stressed over and over and over, that we are one.”

After three days, the shift in attitudes was profound, she says.

“It took courage, trust, tears and love.”

Hugs were exchanged, friendships were made.

“At the end, we knew that the seed had been planted, but it has to be nurtured now.”

Another gathering is planned for 2014.

“We are hoping that there will be ten times the women at that one.

Until then, it feels like there was a really strong pull to support these women in preparation for 2014.

One western woman is moving to the area to help maintain the communication and another is committed to facilitating small gatherings so the momentum isn’t lost.

Kendra has experienced her own shift, she admits, moving from a person who didn’t pay close attention to world news as it pertains to the Middle East to one who connects reports of the conflict to the individuals she met and spoke with and listened to.

“I think of all the people that I’ve worked one-on-one with, in my practice, helping them to heal — that prepared me to help facilitate change,” she says. “My life has shifted now and I’m going to be ‘out there’ a little more. It’s worth speaking out about.”

January 5 — One of several empty storefronts in downtown was Creston eliminated, with Nadan Nessie Gear moving to a new location that gave it a major increase in space.

Vacated in late summer by No Boundaries Health and Fitness, the location was perfect for Vannessa Fowler’s outdoor store, in its fourth year, which was in a cramped former restaurant on 10th Avenue.

The new location even allowed the installation of a 25-degree ramp to test hiking boots.

•Duane Bruce, a 72-year-old Canyon resident, had been actively participating in rodeos for most of his life, and was inducted into the “Legends of Rodeo” category of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame on Oct. 22, 2011.

“When you ride a bucking horse, you get a high,” he said. “When it’s bucking, it gives you a tremendous feeling — you just can’t describe the feeling. … You keep thinking, I hope the whistle never blows.”

•A 57-year-old man died tragically on New Year’s Eve at his Gray Creek residence when he was crushed by the vehicle he was working on.

“It looks like the vehicle might have started to roll and he attempted to stop it,”

“The kids learn life skills they may or may not be taught in school,” said Holden, a former Brownie with two boys in Scouts.

“It gives them a chance to be outside in

nature. When there’s no roof over your head, you’re free to be who you really are.”

•Columbia Brewery employees learned that they would now be producing Bud Light, the world’s second most popular beer brand. And, they were also told, the Labatt brewery in Edmonton will soon be making Kokanee, which until now has only been produced in Creston.

“Flexibility is at the heart of this expansion — adding another brewery to the Kokanee family will make it easier for us to serve our consumers more efficiently,” Columbia Brewery manager Murray Oswald said •A flat 2011 real estate market was reflected in property assessment notices sent out to homeowners.

“For example, a typical single family home in Creston that was valued at $274,000 for the 2011 assessment roll is valued at $277,000 for the 2012 assessment roll,” said deputy assessor Dennis Hickson.

19 — When most people turned their thoughts to Christmas, Aaron Gregory put his focus on raising funds and getting donations for Haiti, which was still recovering from a devastating earthquake nearly two years earlier. Aaron and his mother, Mary, were planning their second trip in two years to the Port-au-Prince area, from where he was adopted as an infant.

“We took three suitcases filled with donated items, and loaded our own suitcases with more stuff,” said Gregory, a Grade 12 Prince Charles Secondary School student.

Recently I returned from Vancouver after a four month stay.

There, I underwent a double lung transplant followed by a rather difficult recovery.

The generosity of the donor and the donor’s family, along with the talent and dedication of the whole transplant team cannot be easily measured.

In the past half dozen or so years as my health deteriorated, friends and neighbours have often come to my aid.

In those times, and in particular the past several months, Creston has truly ‘blown me away’.

The acts of kindness to myself, Olga, and the rest of my family, the good wishes and prayers have truly touched me.

Thank you Creston, and may the Lord bless you in the special season and the year to come.

“I also have concerns about some of the fundraising ideas,” said Mayor Ron Toyota. “We have about 300 organizations in this valley that rely on different events to operate and for some, a major event each year provides most of their operating funds. I don’t want to get into competing with volunteer groups.”

•Jesse Gartland wasn’t the first local teen to hit the ice as one of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, but he was the only one last season. And he couldn’t be happier.

“It’s the best feeling to come out on the ice knowing most of the people cheering in the stands,” the 17-year-old said. “And being able to skate on the same ice as my dad is a good feeling.”

•Creston RCMP members were marginally busier from October-December 2011 than they were in the same period in 2010, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan told Creston town council.

His members responded to 858 calls for service, 50 more than the previous third quarter of the RCMP fiscal year.

About 60 per cent of calls originate in town.

26 — Emergency services responded to a fatal two-vehicle collision north of Sanca Creek that shut down Highway 3A on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake for a few hours overnight on Jan. 18 and 19. The RCMP's preliminary investigation found that a northbound vehicle being operated by 82-year-old Glen McKenzie crossed the centre line and collided with a southbound vehicle.

•The School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board of education passed a resolution on Jan. 10 to introduce one Wildflower class in Creston and expand the program in Nelson.

“Creston traditionally has had few options and Wildflower adds a very big option,” said trustee and board chair Mel Joy. “Many of the students on the waiting list in Nelson are homeschooled, so this is an opportunity to draw more families into the public school system.”

•The Creston Valley Figure Skating Club enjoyed home ice advantage on the weekend, earning 13 medals in the Kootenay regional figure skating championships, held at the John Bucyk Arena for the first time since 2003.

“This was the first competition for five of our skaters, and they were very excited to skate,” said coach Cassie Bloy.

Surviving for another day

Nothing like taking advantage of an opportunity. This week I scorn the epic failure of the supposed end of the world prediction in the Mayan calendar. I am writing this on Dec. 20, a day before the end is predicted, so the advantage is that if we do meet our demise, no one will be around to tell me I was wrong. (Although it is now Dec. 21 in New Zealand, where nothing out of the ordinary is being reported.)

I’ve thinking lately about how there seems to be much less angst about the Mayan prediction than there was 13 years ago in the lead up to 2000.

Remember when the world’s computer systems were all destined to go berserk when their calendars changed to a date they weren’t programmed to accept? (Computer programmers, apparently being unaware of the looming millennium change, didn’t think to allow for the first digit in year codes to roll over from a 1 to a 2.)

Billions of dollars were spent in preparation, reprogramming systems, but when the big moment came, systems that didn’t make any changes didn’t go up in smoke and in a day or two all was pretty much forgotten.

Major work needed to make Jumbo resort road To the Editor: It looks to me like Christy Clark’s so-called Liberals have decided to go against the will of the majority and implement the plans for the Jumbo Glacier Resort with its appointed resort municipality council because they have little chance of forming the next government anyway.

I worked as a surveyor for 20 years and as a planner for 18, thereby gaining experience in the construction of highways and industrial roads. So when I, as a Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) director, drove the road to the base of the Jumbo area with a few other RDEK directors and from there helicoptered to the top of the glacier in order to get a mental picture of the proposed area, I got a good look at the route the access road would have to take.

Most of the way from Panorama to Jumbo is in a valley with steep sides coming down to a small creek. It is a narrow V-shaped valley with no flat land. The construction of a road suitable for access to a major resort will be expensive, requiring major blasting and earth moving that will have a traumatic effect on the creek and whatever life it supports.

Are B.C. taxpayers happy to pay for the construction and maintenance of an expensive and environmentally damaging road to a project that is also jeopardizing wildlife and the environment but has no certain economic benefits? A study prepared for the RDEK, in conjunction with Cranbrook upgrading its airport to international status, revealed there

had not been a global increase in the number of skiers for several years. I heard a news report sometime during 2012 that indicated the number is now decreasing.

Given the global economic situation and the obvious determination of various right wing governments in Canada to keep wages down while prices keep rising, it is certain that middle class disposable income will not be enough to go skiing unless the resort is next door. So, unless global warming bankrupts lower-level ski resorts and multitudes of rich Saudis want something more challenging than their 100-foot indoor ski hill, the economics of Jumbo is at least improbable. In this time of multi-crises we need neither an expensive white elephant to absorb our tax money nor an appointed mayor and council being paid to guide it into the red. The free market system doesn’t use taxpayers’ money as venture capital. At least it shouldn’t.

First Nations joining in opposition to Jumbo resort To the Editor: “We will stand our ground and we won’t back down!” we supporters of the Ktunaxa nation in support of Jumbo Wild/ Qu’tmuk sang. Over 300 of us stand resilient and defiant, challenging the Liberal government of B.C.’s decision to declare Jumbo an uninhabited municipality, defying the majority of Kootenay citizens in opposition to the development of the Jumbo resort, sidestepping democracy for profit.

The Kootenay Presbytery of the United Church of Canada hopes to help the Ktunaxa Nation in their quest to have our courts, government, developers and skiers understand that some parts of the world are worth keeping as they are because they are sacred spaces.

Places sacred to the relationship between human and creation, between creation and creator.

Jumbo Wild supporters choose the well-being of the grizzly bear and mountain caribou over profit. How many bears will be shot and scared away from their critical habitat because of nervous tourists?

Summer glacier skiing was too dangerous for the Canadian national ski team because of crevasses, so why is glacier summer skiing OK for tourists?

Six thousand six hundred beds indicates a municipality larger than most towns in this region. Where are all the customers coming from and why do transient tourist dollars have priority over full-time taxpaying Kootenay residents?

For over 20 years there have been glaring inconsistencies as to why the proposed Jumbo water infrastructure is designed for 50,000 people, and why the B.C. Ministry of Forests archeology branch uncharacteristically weaseled out of requiring an Archeological Impact Assessment of the proposed resort area. Oberto Oberti whines about being misunderstood — but he has never given us the real facts. Where is the full plan so we can all see it and evaluate it?

Alarm bells are ringing — taxpayers will be paying for something we are not allowed to know.

For those who think Jumbo Wild supporters are naysayers, consider that the proposed Jumbo resort is a symbol for the corruption that has seized the provincial Liberal government. Standing up for Jumbo Wild and the sacred Ktunaxa territory is to stand up for governmental integrity and the honoring of the democratic process.

Lojong slogan 56: Drop self-pity

When Zen practice is not going well, when meditation and its benefits hit a plateau and when living by the values of the precepts for moral behavior feel hard, spiritual practitioners can sometimes regret undertaking Zen training in the first place. At these times, it is easy to fall into feeling sorry for yourself. The anti-spiritual awareness slogan, “Ignorance is bliss,” begins to sound pretty appealing.

Thoughts that open an escape hatch, a back door, begin to arise: “Why not just live a ‘normal life’ and forget about all this meditation and discipline? Why bother to take on this extra burden of Zen training and the continual cultivation of loving-kindness?”

There are times when diligent Zen practice is hard, mind training is hard, the practice of selfless compassion is hard, and even developing kindness is hard. In some conditions, it can be challenging and painful to care about any of this. At these times, speculations about how easy a life other people have can dominate the mind. Thoughts about how great life would be without the added responsibility and commitment to Zen practice and the mind-training slogans fill awareness. It would be such

a relief to forget about trying to wake up early for meditation, uncover deception, practice kindness, help others and live a life based in deep spiritual values!

The problem is that once you begin

to see your life and your relationship to the world through the eyes of the Zen teachings, it is very difficult to turn that off. If you have had an insight into the true nature of reality, it is almost impossible to erase it. You may be able to turn insight into un-insight for a while, but soon you will remember the truth that diligent practice has helped you to penetrate. What you see, you see, and what you see is real. In the end, insight into reality is a good thing, so why feel sorry for yourself?

Under the provincial policing funding structure, municipalities with populations of more than 5,000 must pay for the number of RCMP officers assigned to the town, plus a share of the costs of operating the police station.

•The Kootenay East Regional Hospital District’s (KERHD) John Kettle has kicked off his fifth term as chair by announcing a budget reduction of nearly one quarter. The reduction came in large part from the repayment of debt incurred by recent expansion and upgrades to East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH) in Cranbrook. The 2012-13 budget included a $1 million reserve fund for a proposed expansion to the EKRH intensive care unit.

•Students at Adam Robertson Elementary School were learning to combine art techniques with journaling, with working artists to lead them through the process. Participating classes were led by working artists Eileen Hirota (a former school counsellor), Joanne Ferry and Cheryl Place, who led them through a series of exercises to personalize their journals and learn a variety of art techniques.

“Now I remember why I retired from teaching!” Hirota joked. “Actually, this has been a lot of fun. The kids are really enthusiastic.”

•Two of the winners of the 2012 edition of Creston’s Best Singer would move on to the Kootenays’ Best Singer contest in June. Matt Hansen placed first, and Jesse Dumas and Jairus Stonehouse placed second in the Feb. 9 contest held at the Prince Charles Theatre.

“I feel humbled,” said Hansen. “I didn’t think I did all that good.”

Judges Cheryl Coté (from Nelson), Bailey Baldin (Nelson) and Justin Swanson (Cranbrook) obviously felt differently, with Hansen’s rendition of Train’s Meet Virginia in the semifinals earning him a spot in the top five, where Billy Joel’s Piano Man launched him to the top.

23 — Number 9 will no longer be worn by one of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats after Travis Ludwar’s jersey was retired in a ceremony prior to Saturday’s game.

Ludwar, who was born and raised in Creston, joined the Thunder Cats in 2006, and stayed with the team through the 2010-2011 season. In that time, he broke team records for the most points (208), goals (100) and games played (223).

“It was an honour, definitely,” said the former team captain. “I really enjoyed playing with the team for the five years.”

•The Creston Valley Thunder Cats played their final game of the 2011-2012 season on Feb. 19. With 65 points, they placed third in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, and would take on the second-place Kimberley Dynamiters in the first round of the playoffs.

(RDCK) were about to end, it wasn’t evident at a town committee of the whole meeting on Feb. 20.

The special meeting was called to address shared service agreements after Mayor Ron Toyota cast the lone dissenting vote at the Feb. 16 RDCK meeting on a resolution to extend the tenure of the Arrow Creek water treatment and supply service (ACWTSC) through 2016.

Toyota also voted against an amended ACWTSC bylaw.

•The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) wasn’t happy with a petition being circulated demanding vehicle access throughout the managed area, Creston town council was told at the Feb. 14 regular meeting.

“Everyone has 24-hour-a-day access to all areas,” Richard Dalon, chief executive officer of the CVWMA said in a presentation. “Some vehicle access has been restricted, especially to dikes, which are not roads.”

•An Elk Valley hockey team that came to Creston with hopes of qualifying for the provincial bantam hockey championships left in anger on Feb. 19, after losing the Kootenay championship final and having had electronic equipment stolen from its Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC) dressing room.

One parent reported the theft to the Advance on Feb. 20, concerned that the theft might have been intended to “throw the team off its game.”

March 1 — A delegation that included RCMP and Ministry of Public Safety representatives met with Creston town council and staff on Feb. 21 to help clarify the impending change to local policing.

There was some good news, though. Ministry representative Lisa Godenzie, director for RCMP contract policing, said the province would require the town to pay for seven, not eight, police officers, as originally announced.

“This is the first time we have ever made a reduction in what a municipality has to pay for,” she said.

•More than 50 Creston Valley teachers took to downtown sidewalks on Feb. 27 to express their displeasure at a threat to legislate a new contract, joining other BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) members in a provincewide “day of action.”

“Today teachers are saying that we should be negotiating — don’t legislate us back,” Rebecca Blair said.

•A local partnership turned to an awardwinning communications firm from Kimberley firm to help create a marketing plan for the Creston Valley. The Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce, Town of Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay Areas B and C were using economic development funds to contract with Story & Co. to create a brand that will help in promoting the area.

•Protecting local agriculture was at the heart of John Kettle’s objection to a Town of Creston proposal to revisit a water cost-sharing agreement with the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

•The Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) is helping its members keep up with 21st century technology, thanks to a donation by the Creston and District Credit Union. The program bought two tablet computers and accessories with part of a $2,500 donation, the rest of which may be used to buy a laptop.

8 — The Friends of the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre, a board currently being created by the Community Arts Council of Creston, was making plans to run the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre, located in a former auto garage at the corner of 15th Avenue and Canyon Street.

Most contentious was a proposal to require private company inspectors and installers of fire safety equipment to be certified by a provincial body.

Deputy Chief Michael Moore said that he discovered that some local businesses had paid for services that were not correctly carried out and, in one case, a fire resulted.

•Josue Molina arrived to take over the duties of retired pastor Ian Cotton, who conducted Seventhday Adventist Church services in Creston and Cranbrook for six years. The native of El Salvador, who grew up in Costa Rica, would reside in Cranbrook, where his wife, Tammy, works as a hospital social worker. The 34-year-old had been in the ministry for 12 years.

29 — A small building behind the Wynndel Community Hall became the Wynndel Arts Centre, which grew out of volunteer renovations to make the building suitable for a pottery group, which became the Wynndel Mudders.

Original Mudders Sandy Kunze and Bruce Johnston worked to expand the building’s use.

“We decided it was time to get more utilization out of what is a very nice little structure, and to get more community involvement in arts and cultural programs,” Johnston said. “We need to do more than just pottery.”

•Luanne Armstrong earned a cross-Canada reputation as an editor and writer, and added a national para-equestrian win to her resume, taking first place in para-dressage test, Grade 1b, a competition that was based on videos submitted to the Equine Canada competition.

“I think it is wonderfully ironic that although I have been riding horses all my life, it was only after I was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis that I am learning to ride properly,” she said.

•New Creston town councillor Scott Veitch, Mayor Ron Toyota and veteran councillor Wesly Graham were the top spenders in the 2011 local government elections, spending $4,917, $4,213 and $3,035, respectively.

• Traffic returned to a normal flow at the Kingsgate border crossing on March 22, when three lanes opened to traffic entering Canada from Idaho.

The joint Maple ReindersUrban Sytems bid came in at $5,785,000, well below the $8,038,000 bid by Graham and AECOM, which was over the project’s $7.1 million budget, which will be split between the Town of Creston, and federal and provincial infrastructure grants.

Citing health, economic viability, social development, work opportunities and shopping in Nelson, Castlegar and Kaslo, the petition was created by East Shore resident Nicole Plouffe in mid-March, with the goal of reaching 500 signatures.

“This isn’t a fight against anything,” she said. “This is a creative way of problem-solving. This is a

good opportunity to look at it from a different perspective and hopefully help. … No one is asking for more, we’re just asking for a revision of what is.”

19 — A $400,000 grant from the Ministry of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development’s community recreation program was a boost to the town’s trails network. The grant was 80 per cent of funding that would see improvements made to Creston’s trails, with the town, and the Creston and Creston Valley Rotary clubs adding $80,000 to the project.

“We’re planning on paving all the trails we’ve ever done, including Steve’s Ride,” said Coun. Judy Gadicke.

•The Lower Kootenay Band wanted to change the way some locals see the band, so it planned an open house on April 25.

26 — The annual sturgeon release at the former West Creston ferry landing was a popular event on April 18, when spectators and participants packed the area for the chance to release a juvenile white sturgeon into the Kootenay River. A total of 2,600 were released, with Creston area schools placing 1,600 into the river in the morning, and the public releasing 1,000 later in the day.

From page 17 For many years, Erickson residents have received fire protection from Creston Fire and Rescue on a contract with the Town of Creston. Lakeview, Arrow Creek and Kitchener are without fire protection.

•A late night blaze completely destroyed a residence at 434 25th Avenue South on Saturday. With the house already in flames, firefighters concentrated their efforts on a neighbouring residence, which had also been evacuated. The 16 firefighters on the scene fought the blaze for two hours to bring it under control but the fire wasn’t completely extinguished until 5 a.m. on Sunday, more than five hours after they arrived at the site.

•Creston RCMP arrested two teenagers early on May 13 after RCMP officers and a police dog entered into a lengthy chase late before eventually nabbing the pair at a construction site in Crestglen Mobile Home Park.

The teens were suspects in several crimes reported on Sunday morning, In short succession, RCMP received complaints about a break and entry on Scott Street — where thieves stole keys and left in the resident’s vehicle (it was later found in Kootenay River) — and other break

•There were smiles all around when the ribbon was cut at the official opening of Ricky’s All Day Grill on May 17. The restaurant, part of the new Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre complex, was expected to provide a significant boost to Creston Valley tourism. The opening culminated two days of practice for restaurant employees, who served complimentary meals to invited guests in a trial run for the Creston Valley Blossom Festival weekend opening.

June 7 — Angry at cuts to teaching positions that are out of proportion to the forecast drop in enrollment, about 60 School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) teaching staff gathered at the Creston Education Centre on May 29 to express their displeasure.

“This is not personal,” said Creston Valley Teachers’ Association president Becky Blair. “You are not being funded adequately to do what you need to do. You can’t make soup out of stones. But will these cuts hamper students’ progress next year? I can guarantee they will.”

•Newly published crime fiction author Deryn Collier’s debut novel, Confined Space, was available in bookstores. It was written in Creston, before she moved to Nelson with her husband, Ron Sherman, a school principal, and her two sons.

•Creston and District Public Library members unhappy with the termination of chief librarian Ann Day wouldn’t get to confront library board members until September.

“In the interests of continuity and completing the process of finding new leadership, the board decided to hold the AGM Sept. 18, which will provide time to hire a new chief librarian and support him/her in their role for a short time before a new board is formed,” said board chair Joan Jeary by email.

14 — In 1988, the Tipi Camp Nature Retreat opened at the tip of Pilot Peninsula, offering a peaceful getaway from everyday life. In its 25th season, the camp on Kootenay Lake was still going strong, and showed no sign of stopping.

“I’m delighted,” said Peter Duryea, a founder of the Guiding Hands Recreation Society, which runs the camp. “It says to me that yes, it’s a good idea, yes, there is a need and yes, people are picking up on it.”

(RDCK) staff allowed an evacuation order to be lifted.

The homes and several businesses were evacuated around 10:45 p.m. on July 6 after a dike along Crawford Creek partially failed. An evacuation centre was set up at the Crawford Bay Hall, but was unused as all of the displaced residents found accommodation with family or friends.

•Heavy rains and snow melts resulted in orders to declare emergencies in the Slocan Valley, Crawford Creek and Goat River areas, said Regional District of Central Kootenay chair John Kettle, who expressed concern that the Goat River near Highway 21 has become a recurring problem.

“This is a self-inflicted problem in my opinion,” he said. “It needs remediation, not fixes after the flood damage has been done.”

•There was a new way to beat the heat downtown — a treat from Happy Trails was sure to deliver a cooling wave of relief on even the hottest day. The ice cream shop opened just before the May long weekend, and in addition to ice cream treats, offered a hint of nostalgia, with posters of 1950s icons Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe keeping an eye over the shop.

“We did grow up loving Elvis and Marilyn and the Big Bopper and the whole Happy Days scene,” said Michele Staggs, who owns the shop and its companion, Buffalo Trails Coffee House, next door. “And the whole ’50s vibe goes hand-in-hand with ice cream.”

21 — Regional District of Central Kootenay directors John Kettle and Larry Binks and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota failed to reach agreement on how to divvy up water costs from the Arrow Creek Water Treatment and Supply Service (ACWTSS) on June 13 and voted to turn over the dispute to a former RDCK board chair.

The directors met at Creston and District Community Complex to hold a preliminary service review meeting that was triggered when the Town of Creston and RDCK agreed to initiate the process.

• After many successful years at the Tivoli Theatre, Friends of the Cinema was moving to Prince Charles Theatre for the 2012-2013 season.

At total of $16,000 has been donated back to the community over an eight-year period, organizer Jean Mutch said. Of that, $14,000 went to Friends of the Library (which handles administration of the film presentations, and the banking) and the other $2,000 went to the Creston Community Auditorium Society.

•The province of B.C. and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly operate the Creston Valley

Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) for the next 30 years.

“The B.C. government is committed to protecting this important ecosystem, and it welcomes Ducks Unlimited Canada’s involvement to help restore and manage the site over the next three decades,” said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, in the June 12 announcement. “This agreement will greatly assist the operation of the Creston Valley WMA and further enhance its international reputation.”

28 — The Creston Valley Garden Club organized tours of seven gardens on the weekend, which included a rare look at Wayside Gardens, located to the rear of Beltane Nursery in Erickson.

•Parents of children who attend schools out of their catchment area would have to start paying for busing, School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) trustees decided.

A motion by trustee Lenora Trenaman, who represents Crawford Bay, East Shore and West Shore, to direct senior staff not to implement busing fees of $20 per month per child was defeated at the June 19 board meeting in Nelson.

Trenaman introduced her motion by apologizing to the board, parents and staff, explaining that through the budget discussion process, she had not caught the new plan to implement busing charges.

•On June 25, the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s Emergency Operations Centre declared a state of local emergency and a precautionary evacuation alert in response to flooding from the Kootenay River on Peterman Road in West Creston.

“Sections of Peterman Road have experienced eight to 12 inches of water as Kootenay River has overflowed an adjacent field and the road,” said a press release issued that evening.

Police logged 17 incidents, mostly to the south of Canyon Street, by the time the day had ended. After several reports came in on Sunday, patrolling officers took to the streets and located a number of vehicles that had been spray-painted or had windows smashed before the owners had noticed the damage.

•Creston teen Jesse Dumas was preparing to compete for a provincial basketball title with the Okanagan zone in the BC Summer Games, which ran in Surrey from July 19-22. He was the only Creston player on the team, and already played for the South Okanagan U-14 team — there was no U-14 in 2012.
