Idle no more: nations protest $20K grant

gives city’s seniors a boost

When Anne Robinson began to shake her ceremonial rattle, signalling the beginning of a prayer chant, two dozen First Nations members gathered at Harbour Quay on Friday became silent.

When Robinson was done, the drum beats started, people continued trickling in and more voices joined what had become a nationwide day of action supporting treaty rights and opposing Bill C-45—the Harper government’s recently passed omnibus budget legislation.

Christmas bird count on Dec. 30

Free family fun for First Night Port Alberni’s Parks and Recreation department has planned a trio of free family events at three different venues to help ring in the new year on Dec. 31.

AV Multiplex — From 5–7 p.m., on-ice games, a family skate and activities. Last year’s event was popular so it’s back.

Echo Pool — From 6–8 p.m., swimming, games, pizza (donated

by Boston Pizza) and more.

The City of Port Alberni has been awarded a $20,000 provincial grant that will help identify gaps in services for seniors.

“What it will help to do is provide a baseline of what we have for seniors in the community and what we need; what is feasible to support in terms of getting developers in here for community retirement development,” Mayor John Douglas said.

“It’s really timely because a lot of the conversations we’re having with developers such as Berwick need this kind of information.”

Having concrete information about what services exist for seniors and what

people would like to see in the future will also help the Vancouver Island Health Authority in terms of what they can afford in potential partnerships, he added.

Douglas did not have a timeline for when the study would be undertaken.

City manager Ken Watson worked with Barb Stevenson from the Alberni-Clayoquot Continuing Care Society on the grant application.

Douglas credited networking at the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ conference with helping the city land the grant. “I just happened to go to a meeting with the minister and he just happened to mention (the grant) was coming up,” he said.

The annual Christmas bird count takes place in the Alberni Valley on Sunday, Dec. 30 this year.

There are two ways people can participate in the bird count: as a feeder counter or as a field counter.

Feeder counters count birds they see at their birdfeeder. Field counters go to various places around the Valley, both in urban and bush settings.

Organizer Sandy McRuer is also looking for people to search for specific

birds, such as owls or Grey Jays (Whiskey Jacks). This may mean travelling further afield within the count circle.

A social event at the Golden Dragon traditionally follows the bird count.

Looking ahead to a good 2013 Adrian Dix seeks balance with business As 2012 winds to a close, we can’t help but think this has been a benchmark year for Port Alberni.

The city celebrated its first 100 years with several events leading up to a giant homecoming party over the August long weekend. Now that the party is over, the Alberni Valley has collectively gotten busy on marking its next century.

While we are decades beyond the heyday of the 1950s and ’60s, when Port Alberni had some of the highest wages per capita in the country, we are still seeing signs of a growing economy.

We opened a brand new high school for the first time in nearly 50 years.

We have welcomed the rejuvenation of the Alberni Mall, with the addition of Home Hardware, Paws and Claws, Aaron’s Home Furniture and, coming in the spring, The Brick.

While some of those businesses have moved out of South Port, we have seen the galvanization of several of the small businesses uptown as they fight for their own identity. More than half a dozen new stores opened in South Port in the past year, while others moved into larger premises. There’s definitely a buzz going on in South Port despite the impending closure of Zellers.

The Ford dealership announced plans to expand at a new location, then owner Will Pulford bought a second dealership from Dennis Jonsson.

All these businesses opening and expanding are indications that business owners feel investment is valuable in the Alberni Valley.

Will we return to the successes we saw in 2005, pre-recession? Not likely. But there’s nothing wrong with a ‘decent’ year being the new normal.

ICTORIA – NDP leader Adrian Dix has completed year-end interviews with members of the legislative press gallery. Here are highlights from my discussion with him.

Fletcher: On the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion proposal, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the federal environmental process would have to be strengthened before a project like that could get a thorough enough hearing. Do you agree?

Dix: The B.C. Liberal government has signed an equivalency agreement that says that the federal decision is the provincial decision on these projects. If it applies to Enbridge Northern Gateway, presumably the B.C. Liberals would apply it to Kinder Morgan.

They could have done a joint process, where [the final decision] would have gone to both cabinets.

They chose instead to give up jurisdiction. They were so afraid of making any decision on Northern Gateway that they sent it over to the federal government.

So what we’ve said is within a week of coming to office, we would end that equivalency agreement,

and British Columbia would make decisions about both Enbridge Northern Gateway, which applied in May 2010, and any other pipeline, including the Kinder Morgan proposal, for which no application has been made.

Fletcher: You don’t want duplicated review processes here, you just want a provincial cabinet say in the decision?

Dix: That’s right.

Fletcher: On your relationship with the B.C. Federation of Labour, your caucus is considering a proposal that B.C. should once again do away with secret ballots for union certification.

Dix: The B.C. Fed makes a case to the government on a series of issues on employment standards every year. Labour law, every year.

WorkSafeBC, every year. Trades and training, every year.

With respect to [accepting signed union cards for certification], it is a democratic process that the Newfoundland Conservative government just put into place a few months ago. So it’s a proposal from the labour movement and we’re looking at it.

For most of B.C.’s modern history, since World War II, we’ve had that card-check system in place.

Fletcher: So those kinds of things will be made clear in your platform?

Dix: Absolutely.

Fletcher: You picked up some serious money from the business community at a fundraiser in October.

Is that some kind of a record for the NDP? Dix: [Laughs.] It might be a record, I don’t know.

I think the business fundraiser we did at the Hotel Vancouver netted $350,000.

I think what it reflects is, this year I’ve had about 230 meetings with the business community.

The purpose of it has been principally to build understanding, particularly on issues of skills training.

With the priority I give to skills training, I think I’m much more attuned to their concerns than the [Liberal] government has been.

Fletcher: I suppose that kind of success in fundraising might make it more difficult to follow through with your pledge to ban corporate and union donations.

Dix: I don’t think so. The B.C. Liberal Party has a very high level of corporate donations as a percentage of its total.

We’re overwhelmingly dependent on individual donations.

We get support from unions, but it’s not even close to what people would think.

Fletcher: So you’ll campaign for that, as you have before?

To the Editor, I was wondering if Mayor John Douglas and city councillors could forward the business plan for South Port to me? I’m sure they have one so as to give them direction?

It is compulsory in the private sector to have one; to understand where you are going and to show financers—in our case, the taxpayer— that you understand what you are doing and the goals you have in mind for future growth.

As I look out at South Port and see The Brick, Home Hardware, Zellers, coffee houses, etc. closing or moving their businesses to North Port I feel confident that our city leaders must have planned long ago how to navigate this “evacuation” of our area with a thorough and sought out plan.

I would hate to think council has no real plan at all, and will just quietly let this side of town run into a quagmire of misery.

I would also hate to think mayor and council are just going to hide behind handshakes and

Snow job over road clearing To the Editor, For the past week or two Emcon has had a grader or snowplow out grinding off the top of our chipseal and breaking up the edges of the pavement around Sproat Lake by 9 a.m. when there hasn’t been any snow on the road.

Alas, today the snow fell as had been predicted for the past three days, and lo and behold, no snowplows or graders are to be found anywhere out here at 2:30 p.m.

Education on energy drinks To the Editor, Re: Booster truths: revealing caffeine’s dark side (Alberni Valley News, Dec. 5) The Canadian Beverage Association (CBA) would like to address some comments made in a recent article on energy drinks as well as inform your readers on Health Canada’s current regulatory transition of energy drinks.

Under Health Canada’s guidance energy drinks are moving from Natural

Health Products (NHPs) to foods.

Energy drinks currently, and will continue to after the transition, carry mandatory labelling that declares caffeine from all sources as well as including stating that energy drinks are not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people who are sensitive to caffeine, and are not recommended to be mixed with alcohol.

As part of the transition, Health Canada has capped the total amount of caffeine allowed in energy drinks at 400 mg per litre. This means that a small single-serving energy drink (e.g. 250 mL can) will be capped at 80 mg of caffeine while larger single-serving containers (e.g. 473 mL up to 750 mL can) will be capped at 180 mg of caffeine.

To put that in perspective if you look at a typical eight-ounce (237 mL) serving, Canadians

get 30 mg of caffeine from a cola, 80 mg of caffeine from an average small can energy drink (180 mg caffeine in a large 473 mL can) or 96 mg of caffeine from an extra small Tim Hortons Iced Cap. This regulatory change will closer align how energy drinks are sold in Canada with those sold in 160 countries.

The CBA believes that Canadians need all the facts available about energy drinks.

Our goal is to help provide accurate and science based information so Canadians are able to make informed beverage choices for themselves and their families.

The above passage from Isaiah points out to us that if we have faith and hope in the Lord then we are able to draw on the strength and peace that only God can give as we start this New Year. This passage applies to all of us, no matter the reason for our tiredness and listlessness. It could be that we have had stress at work or home - Illness or family tensions - loneliness or perhaps the opposite – too many people crowding in and making demands on us, that we simply want to stand up and say “enough is enough”. Salvation Army Major Bruce Mac Kenzie couldn’t keep the smile off his face Friday morning as he unloaded a trunk full of food donated to the food bank from the Royal Bank.

Branch manager Matei Mateias and client assistance officer Meagan Charron joined Quality Foods manager Gord Groves in donating 24 bags of food as well as $1,000 to Mac Kenzie.

Their contribution— which they couldn’t have made without assistance from Quality Foods—was five times as much as last year, Mateias said.

He gave credit to Charron for pushing the food drive.

“She got our staff and clients excited about donating,” he said.

“The response was amazing. In the first week we had a gentleman donate $100, then come back and donate another $50.”

The donation is welcome on two different fronts, Mac Kenzie said.

The Salvation Army has been busy filling Christmas hampers for hundreds of clients, and there was an early food bank day as well.

“This means we don’t have to say ‘I’m sorry, there’s no food left for you’,” he said.

F

or many years, the seniors in our community have benefited from the support of our Royal Canadian Legion—all three branches that we’ve had.

“It’s part of our mandate to assist people who live in seniors homes and other non-profit organizations, such as the Meals on Wheels program,” says Don Bryant, a Legion member for almost 40 years, and past president of the now-defunct Legion Branch 169.

Legion Br. 293, the amalgamation of branches 169 and 55,

provides funding to seniors’ homes from its bingo games and the Poppy Fund. It also provides funding for bursaries for Alberni District Secondary School students.

“The donations are for the comfort of seniors to be used for items normally not covered by operational budgets,” says Bryant.

“We like to make the presentations of these donations to the nonprofit organizations at our regular meetings, so our members see where our fundraising goes. And it is also an incentive for them to continue assisting the seniors and other groups in our community,” he

adds.

Legion members used to visit their veterans and other seniors in the hospital and long-term care homes.

Bryant was born in Adelaide East Street in Port Alberni and has lived here all his life. He followed in the footsteps of his father, who was the first president of Legion Br. 169 in 1942.

“Both my parents came from England. My father landed in Canada in 1905,” he said. “I attended Alberni Elementary School on Burke and Elizabeth, much smaller in those days.

“During the war years I started working in a logging camp and was

too young to be drafted and go to war. Two of my brothers went to war and, luckily, both came back.”

Later on Bryant joined the Ministry of Highway and worked there for 30 years. He was also actively involved as a volunteer with the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad for 42 years.

Don has been married to Shirley since 1964 and they have three daughters.

Shirley is also a Legion member and volunteers with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

“I have enjoyed being part of and working for the Legion all these 39 years and especially helping others in the community,” Don Bryant said.

Don Bryant has served the Alberni Valley’s seniors through his role with the Royal Canadian Legion for almost 40 years.

Lee sells coffee during the Saturday morning markets and the proceeds go to the Bread of Life. In eight years he has donated at least $7,000.

Sjoholm received $400 earlier in the week from the Europa Club, and that will go into general funds to be used as needed, she said.

“We’re doing OK. We’re down a bit from last year but not by much.”

A

gentle giant who was one of the first African Canadian citizens in Port Alberni and a member of the Alberni Athletics Basketball team has died.

Ken Larsen died in Prince George in September after succumbing to a stroke. He was 76.

Larsen is survived by his wife Rita, children, daughters Zoe and Tanya, as well as sons Ken, Ron and their mother Trudy.

Also left to mourn are Larsen’s brother Henry and sister Berdi.

Ken was born in Calgary and grew up in Prince George, said his son Ron, who still lives in Port Alberni.

An athlete, Larsen played high level baseball and football, even earning workouts with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

But Larsen’s first love was always basketball.

After leaving Prince George, Larsen played with Everett Junior College in the US, then with the Vancouver Cloverleafs where he earned the team’s rookie of the year award.

He left Prince George in the 1960s and came to Port

The last time Andrews saw Larsen in Port Alberni was five or six years ago at a funeral, he said.

“We talked about the old days and he talked about his life in Prince George. That was the last time,” Andrews said.

The memories of Larsen after death are the same as his first impressions of him when they met, Andrews said.

“That’s what I remember: that he was a good man, a jovial man, and a man who was fun to be around,” Andrews said.

Alberni goalie Comox king Port Alberni goaltender Bryce DiRocco has signed with the Junior B Comox Valley Glacier Kings.

DiRocco played with the midget rep Bulldogs, and also tried out for the B.C. Hockey League Alberni Valley Bulldogs in September.

DiRocco, 17, was an affiliate with the Glacier Kings and leads the team in goals against average and save percentage.

Head coach Bill Rotheisler said

We talked as a staff for awhile now to determine the direction we wanted to go, and with (starter) Michael Hails out for the next few weeks, it became evident that this was something we needed.”

DiRocco joined the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) team in late November.

“The acquisition of Hails allowed us to bring in Bryce,” Rotheisler added.

This Was Then...with Old Ike Edited by Kris Patterson

The late Ike Patterson—popular historian, radio personality, city councillor and newspaper man— never got around to publishing a collection of his column, This Was Then, which ran in the Pennyworth before Ike’s death in 2011.

Spurred on by numerous requests, Patterson’s son Kris has done what his father ran out of time to do.

Kris released This Was Then...with Old Ike on Aug. 30.

The book is a small selection of Ike’s columns, which Alberni Valley Museum director Jean McIntosh called “a valuable community record.”

This Was Then...with Old Ike is already in its third printing. And Kris is working on a sequel, to be released in 2013.

Proceeds from the book will go to both the community archives and the museum.

Diana Pearson’s home for holidays Diana Pearson, and alt pop singer/ songwriter who hails from Port Alberni, is coming home for the holidays. And she’s going to close out the season at Char’s Landing with a special concert on Dec. 28 at 8 p.m.

Born and raised in Port Alberni, Pearson, 22, is an aspiring solo pianist and vocalist now residing in Calgary, Alta. Inspired by contemporary artists such as Vanessa Carlton and Regina Spektor, Pearson’s songwriting style consists of catchy melodies, emotionallydriven lyrics and a distinct piano style.

Her delicate yet sassy voice has been compared to Chantal Kreviazuk and Sarah McLachlan.

A dedicated and passionate musician,

Pearson has been studying music from a young age. She studied piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music for many years, most recently earning First Class Honours with Distinction at the Grade 9 level under the instruction of Patricia Miller.

Pearson also holds a Jazz Studies Diploma in Music from Vancouver Island University and was mentored by instructors such as Bill Costin and Bryan Stovell.

Advance tickets are $12 at Rollin Art Centre (cash only).

Tickets will be $3 more at the door.

Doors open at 7 p.m.

Char’s Landing is located on Argyle Street at Fifth Avenue, in the former church.
