SEASON’S GREETINGS

All I want for Christmas, kids weigh in

LAURA BALKWILL Gr. 2 – Dragon Lake Mommy had just tucked me into bed after a long day of skiing and a busy night of getting ready for Santa Claus.

Graham had said that he would stay up and see Santa but I didn’t believe him.

I listened for Santa, but all I could hear was the clatter of mommy doing dishes and the strange noise of daddy moving our chairs over to the entrance of the kitchen so my dog Bailey could not eat the cookies for Santa.

I knocked on the metal shower.

We were at our ski cabin so there was no running water.

“Graham,” I whispered. “Santa’s not here!”

“He will come soon,” Graham whispered back.

Finally we fell asleep.

Meanwhile, someone came tiptoeing in, as the reindeer waited anxiously at the door.

All of a sudden I opened my eyes.

“Christmas!” I squealed opening my door.

Graham was already up, climbing down the ladder of the bunk bed.

I raced into the kitchen.

My eyes got very wide at the big present under the tree.

I ripped it open.

“What’s this?” I asked excitedly.

Beside me Graham was opening his present.

“Froggy Pillow!” he exclaimed.

I looked at mine. It had big eyes, a pink weird shaped body with a piggy nose. It was very soft.

“Piggy Pillow!” I yelled giving it a hug.

Every time I went to the ski cabin I played with it.

And now I am seven and it’s still my very favourite stuffie there.

One Christmas I ran down to the Christmas tree. I looked around the tree.

I found a present. I opened it. I got Lego Harry Potter.

When you play you are a wizard. It is cool.

We play with it on the Play Station.

My brother and I play. It is very, very special.

DYLAN SWORD Gr. 2 – Dragon Lake This Christmas I hope I get Mario Chess.

It is going to be so fun but it is not the same thing as regular chess.

Mario Chess is fun to play. The green Minions are shells.

The red Minions are coins.

The board is a square. It has 23 pieces.

Bowser is green and Mario is red. I would love to get this present because it has Mario. He is my favourite person.

KAO FISH Gr. 2 – Dragon Lake When it was morning I ran to the tree.

There were lots of presents. There was a big present. I opened the present.

It was a Lego set.

Then I played with it.

It had lots of Lego guys. It had lots of pieces of Lego.

It comes in lots of colours and it is fun!

ZACHARY WINCHESTER Gr. 2 Dragon Lake One Christmas I was so excited. I was in my bed. I was up at 6 a.m.

I woke up my parents. I went downstairs. I looked under my Christmas tree.

I opened my present.

It was a Bakugan.

I opened my three cases. I was so happy.

It is big.

It is hard.

It can pop-up. It is

on a card. It looks like a round ball.

JESSE CAHOOSE Gr. 2 – Dragon Lake On Christmas day Santa brought me a present.

It was a Pokemon.

They are my favourite shows. I watch it every morning.

under the tree.

The presents had stripes and polka dots and snowmen. I opened my present. It was a skateboard.

NATALIE SETTLE Gr. 2 – Dragon Lake I was in bed when I heard my mom yell, Natalie come down stairs.

I got downstairs and I found a Rudolph the Reindeer robot.

He was soft. It flashes its red nose.

It walks on four legs.

It scares my dog. I love it.

I got a water gun. It is red, blue and green.

It shoots water.

You have to pull the lever back then push it forward to make it work.

I play with it in the spring and summertime.

My water gun is pretty big. I like it because it can shoot cold water and warm water.

This Christmas I am so excited. I am going to get a Snow Monster High doll.

I will say Thank you, thank you very much for my gift. I will thank my mom and my dad for the present. I love Christmas.

For the past three years, Quesnel Community Foundation has offered the opportunity to Double Your Gift, thanks to the support of very generous anonymous donors. Since October 15, the Foundation received more than 43 individual donations totalling $39,461.72. These donations have been matched dollar for dollar for a total of $78,923.44 being added to our Community Endowment Fund. The income generated from these funds will greatly increase the amount of annual grant monies to support local projects.

In the past 6 weeks, our community has donated well over $100,000 to groups like Quesnel Community Foundation, Royal Canadian Legion, Quesnel Rotary, Quesnel & District Hospice Palliative Care Association, Quesnel Food Bank, Salvation Army Kettle Campaign just to mention a few. Also to be considered are the many hours that are contributed by volunteers to organizations that rely on volunteer help to provide their services and programs. KAYDEN PROULX Gr. 2 – Dragon Lake On Christmas morning I will wake up and run down to the Christmas tree. I will unwrap a present. I hope it is an iPod Touch.

I would like it to be purple and pink. I can watch movies on it. I can play games on it. I would play horseback riding and Barbie. I would touch the screen to make it work.

It had red wrapping paper. I tore the paper open and saw and iPad. It was just what I asked for. I was so excited.

It is so big. It has a pink cover. I touch it to make it work. I can play games on it.

I have movies on it.

It is cool. It was the best gift ever.

“What! What! What is the matter?”

“It’s Christmas!” I yelled.

Mom said, “Can’t I get some sleep here?”

“Fine,” I said.

“Ugh!” I said.

“Maybe I could open just one,” I whispered sneakily but first I asked. Mom said I could but just one.

It was a Kid’s Christmas Cookbook.

It had doodles on the cover. There were pictures of cookies inside, and a gingerbread house.

There were pretty cupcakes, decorations and lots of sweets to copy out off of it.

There were a whole bunch of presents under the Christmas tree

but I loved the first present I opened.

It was a snowboard!

It is cool because I still have it. I use it because it is cool. It is blue. It has a picture on top. I use it because it is cool. It was the best present ever.

I am going to run

down stairs and open my presents and if I get Skylanders Giants I am going to scream.

I ran down the stairs over to the Christmas tree.

I finally found my present. I ripped open my present. I saw a 3-DS and it said my name Brianne. I was happy and it was special to me. It was what I asked for. It was pink and it had my favourite game Hello Kitty.

Bad seeds

he federal government is bent on pushing medical marijuana grow operations out of residential homes.

Crime and safety – home invasions, faulty wiring and mould – are the main reasons, and the plan has the backing of fire chiefs in B.C. An apartment fire in Maple Ridge on Dec. 13, which left dozens of people homeless, illustrates their concerns, as investigators found three grow ops on the second floor, where the fire started, and which they believe was electrical in origin.

But Health Canada has said that the proposed legislation, which would regulate medical marijuana grow ops and push them to industrial or agricultural areas, where they would be subject to inspections, will drive up the purchase price.

Would that not fuel illegal grows and trade, similar to what occurs now?

Wouldn’t that nullify any changes to eliminate safety risks?

Part of the plan is to let Health Canada medical possession and grow licenses expire in 2014.

They will, in future, be more difficult to acquire, which is good, as some seem to have fallen into hands that can’t resist growing more than their licenses permit, and selling to people other than those who need it for medicinal purposes. What if, under the new regulations, some who do need it for that reason can’t afford to buy from newly licensed growers?

Who benefits then?

The federal government’s plan seems only to serve those who can afford to establish commercial grow op businesses, and put those who subvert the process into prison.

Why not regulate, license and disclose small grows in homes, window-sill-type operations for personal, medicinal use?

Why not follow Washington and Colorado, and just legalize recreational use?

Clearly there is much money to be made in marijuana, and in Canada, we’re wasting way too much money and time trying to curb what is beyond the control of our authorities.

Taking away patients’ personal production licences is akin to punishing all because of a few bad seeds.

Dix seeks balance with business N

DP leader Adrian Dix has completed year-end interviews with members of the legislative press gallery.

Here are highlights from my discussion with him.

TF: On the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion proposal, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the federal environmental process would have to be strengthened before a project like that could get a thorough enough hearing.

Do you agree?

AD: The B.C. Liberal government has signed an equivalency agreement that says that the federal decision is the provincial decision on these projects.

If it applies to Enbridge Northern Gateway, presumably the B.C. Liberals would apply it to Kinder Morgan.

They could have done a joint process, where [the final decision] would have gone to both cabinets.

They chose instead to give up jurisdiction. They were so afraid of making any decision on Northern Gateway that they sent it over to the federal government.

So what we’ve said is

B.C. Views within a week of coming to office, we would end that equivalency agreement, and British Columbia would make decisions about both Enbridge Northern Gateway, which applied in May 2010, and any other pipeline, including the Kinder Morgan proposal, for which no application has been made.

Obviously it would have been desirable for everyone had they chosen a true joint review, as they have in Site C [dam proposed for Peace River], as they did with Kemess North [rejected mine expansion proposal] and other cases.

TF: You don’t want duplicated review processes here, you just want a provincial cabinet say in the decision?

AD: That’s right.

TF: On your relationship

that some kind of a record for the NDP? AD: [Laughs.] It might be a record, I don’t know.

I think the business fundraiser we did at the Hotel Vancouver netted $350,000.

I think what it reflects is, this year I’ve had about 230 meetings with the business community.

The purpose of it has been principally to build understanding, particularly on issues of skills training.

With the priority I give to skills training, I think I’m much more attuned to their concerns than the government has been.

TF: I suppose that kind of success in fundraising might make it more difficult to follow through with your pledge to ban corporate and union donations.

AD: I don’t think so.

The B.C. Liberal Party has a very high level of corporate donations as a percentage of its total. We’re overwhelmingly dependent on individual donations. We get support from unions, but it’s not even close to what people would think.

TF: So you’ll campaign for that, as you have before?

AD: Yes.

with the B.C. Federation of Labour, your caucus is considering a proposal that B.C. should once again do away with secret ballots for union certification.

AD: The B.C. Fed makes a case to the government on a series of issues on employment standards every year. Labour law, every year. WorkSafeBC, every year. Trades and training, every year. With respect to [accepting signed union cards for certification], it is a democratic process that the Newfoundland Conservative government just put into place a few months ago. So it’s a proposal from the labour movement and we’re looking at it.

For most of B.C.’s modern history, since World War II, we’ve had that cardcheck system in place. The question would be whether [returning to that system] is a priority for this term in government.

TF: So those kinds of things will be made clear in your platform?

AD: Absolutely.

TF: You picked up some serious money from the business community at a fundraiser in October. Is

The true meaning of Christmas Editor: The Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre will be receiving a truly amazing gift this Christmas.

The furnace in our building wasn’t working properly so a technician from the Great Indoors HVAC Company was called out to fix the problem.

clear that we needed a new furnace.

Being a non-profit society, QWRC would struggle financially with the cost of installing a new furnace.

Many women’s centres across the province lost their operational funding in 2004. Since this time, we have continued to provide services in our

community but often find it difficult to maintain and upkeep our building with the loss of this funding.

Cam Fehr and Scott Thompson came to our rescue and generously agreed to donate not only a new furnace, but also materials and labour.

Cam Fehr is the owner of the Great Indoors HVAC Company in

Quesnel and he really wanted to give something back to our community.

Perhaps in the holiday season, more than at any other time, our hearts go out to others and Quesnel is a wonderful community that reaches out to those in need.

Fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can lower triglycerides a type of fat in the blood. The dose is usually 4 grams per day. However, the use of fish oils to lower the risk of heart attacks doesn’t have the same proof. There are other sure ways of lowering heart attack risk: stop smoking, control blood pressure and cholesterol and regular exercise.

Abstaining from alcohol during pregnancy is one of the best ways of preventing birth defects and developmental disorders of which fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most severe. The message is simple; if you are pregnant, don’t drink alcohol.

It has been proven that exercise lowers the risk of cancer. The message is getting through to many people but those undergoing cancer treatment can also benefit.

It doesn’t have to be a high intensity workout but even gentle exercise could help with a sense of well-being, often hard to feel during cancer therapy.

Alumni Ball (both Bs and Vs) Future meets past in competition of the fittest

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter A host of ballers took part in Correlieu’s annual Alumni Games last Friday, trying in vain to beat the new kids on the hardwood.

“I know a lot of those kids and it’s great to see them come back and play,” Mike Adams, the principal said.

The event kicked off at 12:30 a.m. with a volleyball game pitting a mixed team of Alumni against the girls volleyball team. Though the alumni

surged out in front early in the game, the Clan came back to take the game 25-23 by full time.

After the competitive game, alumni took on alumni and then were joined by the Clan girls to round out the volleyball hour.

In the second hour the Clan boys basketball team took on the alumni in a very close game of eight minute quarters. At half time the alumni were up two points, but the Clan came back through the last half, beating the

alumni 55-50 at full time.

Last year’s grads joined a long line of alumni reaching back nearly fifteen years to 1998.

The event was well attended by alumni, with nineteen grads coming out to take part, some playing both volleyball and basketball.

The volleyball game was the best attended by alumni, with 15 players.

Late Christmas tales from the sheets Christmas may be over, with the boxes coming out to celebrate boxing day, but while the Super League curlers curled, carolers were still caroling.

A&W took down CDC 6-1 on sheet Silver ‘B’ells.

The kids from CDC were in a giving mood last week as Christmas was fast approaching. A&W stole one in the first, one in the second and two in the third before the kids were forced to take one in the fourth.
