A world champion on the track, Michelle Stilwell is about to compete in a very different kind of race. The NEWS learned on Thursday that Stilwell is the only candidate who has declared her intention to seek the B.C. Liberal nomination in the Parksville-Qualicum riding. “It’s something I have been thinking about for several years but athletics has always taken precedence,” said Stilwell, 38. “I know I am a hard worker and determined and when I set a goal I do my best to achieve it.” Constituency association president Bruce Cownden confirmed Stilwell’s candidacy has been approved by the party. He said other candidates may surface before or even during the Jan. 8 nomination meeting. “I think (Stilwell) will make a great candidate and it’s nice to see a young candidate,” said Cownden. “I think it gives us an opportunity to hold the riding.” See ‘MY HUSBAND, page A5

The provincial government handed out some big cheques to resort communities this week, but not a penny went to Parksville or Qualicum Beach. Whistler is getting more than $6 million, Tofino, about $650,000, as part of the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI). Since 2007, this program has pumped more than $61 million into communities like Uclulet, Radium and Revelstoke. This week, $10 million was doled out to 14 communities. See ROOMS, page A5

A moment of silence for the victims and their families of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting started off this week’s local school board meeting. Later, board chair Lynette Kershaw asked superintendent Jim Ansell to say a few words regarding District 69 practices. Ansell said following the horrific event, some best practices materials were sent out immediately to local schools from the province and agencies that respond to such tragic circumstances. From there schools followed up and took the initiative to support their students and parents, he said. “I was really pleased to see schools found their own way to follow up and respond to support our students and their families in very successful ways, including a lot of newsletters that went home this week with suggestions for parents working with their children,” said Ansell.
Wednesday crash sends one to hospital One person was rushed to hospital Wednesday after a two-vehicle collision on Alberni Highway. Central Island Traffic Services Constable Blake Manchur said the crash took place in the early afternoon at the intersection of Despard and Highway 4A, resulting in one person being treated for non lifethreatening injuries. The crash, he said, is believed to have been caused by one of the drivers running a red light and charges are being considered. — NEWS Staff

“I think of us as a resort community, a retirement-resort community, but we didn’t even come close to qualifying (for the RMI),” Parksville Mayor Chris Burger said this week. “Maybe that’s the problem — we’re not focussed on one element.” Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association executive director Blaine Sepos said he believes RMI qualification is based on a formula that uses a hotel-rooms-to-full-time-residents ratio. Our region has approximately 1,400 hotel rooms and a population of more than 30,000. While those kind of numbers might disqualify Parksville-Qualicum Beach for this program, Sepos said he believes the RMI “should be a sliding scale.” “Tourism is the most important industry in Parksville Qualicum Beach and there’s a lot of pressure on the local infrastructure when visitors are here,” said Sepos. Money from a program like the RMI, Sepos mused, could be used to construct the boardwalk link between Parksville Community Park and Rathrevor Beach, he said. “That’s a natural (for RMI funding),” said Sepos. “Not only for residents but for visitors, too.” According to a news release from the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training: “Communities will use this funding to enhance services and infrastructure crucial to growing the tourism sector that drives their local economies, including trail and boardwalk improvements, venue development and tourist information services. Without this funding, resort communities would not have the means to provide key community assets to advance their primary industry — tourism.” According to statistics provided by the provincial government, in 2010, the tourism sector employed 127,000 British Columbians, generated more than $13.4 billion in revenue for tourism-related businesses and contributed more than $1.2 billion to provincial government revenues. Total tourism wages and salaries were $4.4 billion in 2010, an increase of 37 per cent since 2000.

As the Island dealt with its first significant snowfall of the year, City of Parksville officials say they are doing their best to keep local roads clear and safe. The challenges facing road crews don’t always directly relate to snow. It seems some residents get quite angry when they find a snowplow has temporarily blocked the end of their driveway. “We’ve had someone come out with a shovel at 4 a.m. and threaten to hit the driver with it,” said Parksville operations foreman Stewart Whitworth. “But how do you not plow over someone’s driveway?” Generally, people are appreciative of the work city crews do in the winter, said Whitworth. He said city staff prepare for the winter months with specif-
ic training, but the quick switch in road conditions can be a challenge. “They (city workers) were mowing the lawns a week ago,” said Whitworth, who was at work at 2 a.m. Wednesday to co-ordinate clearing efforts as the second snowfall of the week was in progress. Parksville Mayor Chris Burger, who has had to deal with much more snow near his Dashwood home compared to his the area around his Parksville office, said Wednesday this first weather event of the season “isn’t too bad yet. It hasn’t overwhelmed us.” Burger also said residents here generally like to follow the rules and perhaps put themselves in danger as they try their best to keep the sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses cleared. Burger had a safety-related message for those ultra-law-abiding citizens and their neighbours.
“If you don’t feel physically capable to do it, we don’t want anyone going out there and having a heart attack,” said Burger. “And if you can lend a hand (to your neighbour), please do.” The City of Parksville attaches plows on the front and blades underneath two gravel trucks for winter snow-clearing duty. They also utilize two one-tonne trucks with plows attached. All four vehicles have salt-spreading capabilities. The forecast (see pqbnews.com) calls for rain and 6-7 C temperatures for Friday and Saturday, with a break in the pattern and some sun on Sunday. About 15 centimetres (four inches) of white, wet stuff fell on our region between Sunday night and Thursday, playing a role in some road mishaps and causing the closure of some businesses and institutions, including Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo on Wednesday (it re-opened Thursday).

she said. The City of Parksville dedicated September 23 of this year as Michelle Stilwell Day after she returned from the London Paralympics with a gold and silver medal from the 200-metre and 100-metre wheelchair sprints, respectively. She is also the first person in Parksville’s history to be awarded
a key to the city. At that ceremony in September, Stilwell hinted about a desire to compete in the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil. Those plans could be sidetracked by a successful political campaign. “I would have to run in the election, and win the election, before that decision would have
to be made,” she said Thursday. Since returning from London, Stilwell said she has been training and home-schooling her son Kai, 11. She said the decision to enter politics will include her family’s input. “My husband (Mark) is definitely used to juggling my lifestyle,” she said. “He’s been very

Parksville’s Community Park sports field will be greatly improved with a cash infusion of more than $350,000, half of which from federal government coffers. Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney made the announcement beside the field on Tuesday on behalf of Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification Lynne Yelich. Mayor Chris Burger said the field was built in the early 1970s and “is very much an important part of our infrastructure,” pointing out that along with a lot of use from locals, it also accommodates visiting teams and tourists.
Parksville Director of Operations Alan Metcalf said the field was built on a sand base which has lasted very well, but closures due to drainage and other problems are becoming more common. Along with improvements to the drainage, the field will get an upgraded irrigation system which will reduce the use of water and re-use some of the water from the Lions’ water park. The federal government portion of the funds come from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, delivered by Western Economic Diversification in Western Canada, with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.

The success of a free shuttle bus in downtown Parksville in the summer highlights deficiencies in regular transit service, city council heard Monday night. The Parksville Downtown Business Association (PDBA) operates a free Shoppers Shuttle in the summer. “The purpose of the bus is to get people into the downtown Business Improvement Area to shop,” said PDBA president Michelle Jones. Last summer, ridership increased by 600 passengers to 2,200, but the “community has become invested in the free bus,” distracting from their goal of getting tourists downtown. “They like it, they expect it and they want it expanded,” which she said “points to gaps in local transportation services, which the PDBA
is not in a position to address.” She said the bus costs a third of the PDBA’s annual budget and accounts for “by far the most queries handled by our office in the spring and summer.” She said they are considering expanding the summer-only service a couple hours each day and/or adding Sunday service, but are not interested in becoming the city’s public transit system. “The community clearly has considerable pent-up demand for transportation services,” she said. Some councillors offered tips about getting resorts and business that benefit from the service to contribute, selling ad space and including a donation box, but Jones said they were not actually looking to take on more transit responsibility, they were just passing on the feedback they get.

The changing face of Christmas
At what age, I wonder, did we first become aware of Christmas as a magical other-worldly time? Paging back through the memory banks tells us clearly — the face of Christmas has changed, if not in its original, traditional meaning, then in its trappings and style of celebration. I couldn’t say when I first recognized Christmas as a time unlike any other in the year. Was it when I was greeted by a lighted and fully decorated tree in the living room - that room always closed off by its French doors to keep the heat in the truly ‘living’ part of the house in winter? Maybe it was before that when I found the bumpy, stuffed, white ribbed stocking hanging at the end of my metal-barred crib. What I very specifically remember is the Christmas after I lost my mother. When it came time for the gift giving, somewhere around dessert, I revealed to her the secret I had learned. That secret was the identity of the person who had inherited Emily Carr’s paint brushes. The owner had been kind and generous enough to loan them to me for a few weeks. “Maybe you want to paint yourself a picture with them.” I said, and I laid the brushes on the table. I don’t see mom tear up much, but she did that night. So now what? How do you top that with some object under the tree that really is only really there as a tangible way to say I love you? I dunno. t some point, one just has to laugh. Or make a buck off it. Or both. There are End of the World parties happening all over the planet tonight. We believe it’s mostly lighthearted, because we don’t want to think about the state of mind of those who actually believe the end of time is upon us. C’mon people, the world can’t end tonight — Santa is warming up the sleigh and the presents we’ve purchased for people haven’t been opened. And the Blue Jays just loaded up on serious, Cy Young-calibre pitching for 2013. Our favourite End of the World party promo comes from the website of Parksville’s Rod and Gun: “I really hope you’ve gotten enough bacon while you were here. Well, it was fun while it lasted. The end of the world party at the Rod and Gun will be your last chance to enjoy everything that’s living on planet Earth had to offer: beautiful sunsets, schnitzel, rally sport racing, fine ladies, the Pixies, the Bond franchise, watching beach volleyball, etc. Too bad it will all be gone tomorrow.” Oh, and the header at the top of the website reads: Rod and Gun — Keeping it real since 1898. This whole end-of-the-world madness supposedly had its roots in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, which was used in Central America prior to the arrival of Europeans. Some have interpreted the end of the calendar to mean the end of days. Thing is, those who have actually studied the Mayan culture and their time-tracking ways say there is no reference anywhere to the world being annihilated when this calendar ends tonight. Astronomers have also rejected various doomsday scenarios related to this night. Sadly, and we hope we’re wrong, some people will be taking this seriously tonight, hunkering down or worse. Our wish is that we don’t wake up to read some horror story about, well, we don’t even want to go there. Have fun tonight, don’t drink and drive and for goodness sake, don’t do something you’re going to regret tomorrow because you believe there will be no tomorrow. No cosmic power would cause the end of the world three or four days before Christmas. — Editorial by John Harding

CHRISTMAS ENRICHED Thank you Pastor Bellerby for your contribution to enrich the Christmas celebration. The song, O Little Town of Bethlehem created in 1868 uplifted many people over the years. I am touched by the song, Silent Night. Tears will always well up; there is something in the lyrics and the music, it is beautiful and soul searing in its intensity. Christmas carols are some of the most touching songs. My thoughts reflect back upon the soldier who started to sing Silent Night while facing the enemy. NDP leader Adrian Dix has completed year-end interviews with members of the legislative press gallery. Here are highlights from my discussion with him. TF: On the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion proposal, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the federal environmental process would have to be strengthened before a project like that could get a thorough enough hearing. Do you agree? AD: The B.C. Liberal government has signed an equivalency agreement that says that the federal decision is the provincial decision on these projects. If it applies to Enbridge Northern Gateway, presumably the B.C. Liberals would apply it to Kinder Morgan. They could have done a joint process, where (the final decision) would have gone to both cabinets. They chose instead to give up jurisdiction. They were so afraid of making any decision on Northern Gateway that they sent it over to the federal government. So what we’ve said is within a week of coming to office, we would end that equivalency agreement, and British Columbia would make decisions about both Enbridge Northern Gateway, which applied in May 2010, and any other pipeline, including the Kinder Morgan proposal, for which no application has been made.

Obviously it would have been desirable for everyone had they chosen a true joint review, as they have in Site C (dam proposed for Peace River), as they did with Kemess North (rejected mine expansion proposal) and other cases. TF: You don’t want duplicated review processes here, you just want a provincial cabinet say in the decision? AD: That’s right. TF: On your relationship with the B.C. Federation of Labour, your caucus is considering a proposal that B.C. should once again do away with secret ballots for union certification. AD: The B.C. Fed makes a case to the government on a series of issues on employment standards every year. Labour law, every year. WorkSafeBC, every year. Trades and training, every year. With respect to [accepting signed union cards for certification], it is a democratic process that the Newfoundland Conservative government just put

into place a few months ago. So it’s a proposal from the labour movement and we’re looking at it. For most of B.C.’s modern history, since World War II, we’ve had that cardcheck system in place. The question would be whether [returning to that system] is a priority for this term in government. TF: So those kinds of things will be made clear in your platform? AD: Absolutely. TF: You picked up some serious money from the business community at a fundraiser in October. Is that some kind of a record for the NDP? AD: (Laughs) It might be a record, I don’t know. I think the business fundraiser we did at the Hotel Vancouver netted $350,000. I think what it reflects is, this year I’ve had about 230 meetings with the business community. TF: I suppose that kind of success in fundraising might make it more difficult to follow through with your pledge to ban corporate and union donations. AD: I don’t think so. The B.C. Liberal Party has a very high level of corporate donations as a percentage of its total. We’re overwhelmingly dependent on individual donations. Sailor rescued from offshore carrier
S
earch and rescue technicians from 442 Squadron in Comox scrambled to rescue an injured crew member on board a ship off the coast. The action started just before 6 p.m. on Dec. 13 when rescuers were dispatched after a call for help was received from the 690-foot bulk carrier, Rook, about 110 km west of Tofino. The crew member had suffered a potentially serious injury while performing maintenance. Despite low clouds and poor visibility, the By aircraft arrived over the Neil ship at approximately 7 Horner p.m., as it rolled in 20foot waves and almost 50 km/h winds. “We communicated a lot as a crew to determine the best place to hoist the Search and Rescue Technicians on board,” said Captain Luc Coates. “We decided to hover over the centre of the ship, taking care to avoid the cranes and guide wires, as we hoisted them to the deck.” Once on the ship, the SAR Techs treated the sailor, put him into a rescue basket and hoisted him into the chopper for transport to hospital in Victoria.

OPENING FOR MEMBERS ON ADVISORY PLANNING COMMISSION The term of office for several members of the Advisory Planning Commission (APC) will end December 31, 2012. At this time the City will consider applications for new members as well as the existing members for the term (2013 - 2014). The City invites applications for a two-year term on the APC. Commission members are appointed pursuant to Section 898 of the Local Government Act and serve without remuneration. The function of the seven member APC is to advise Council on matters respecting land use and community planning that are referred to the Commission by Council. Applicants with experience in land use planning, architectural design or related fields would be an asset, although this is not a prerequisite. FRANCES MARGARET YOUNG Frances passed away December 12, 2012 with daughter, April and granddaughter, Tara by her side. She was predeceased by her son, Bob in 2004. Mom had a very long battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Fighting it all the way, she still chose to live and seek joy from every day. Mom was born and raised in Vancouver where she met and married the man of her dreams, Robert Harry Young. They spent almost 50 years together getting into all kinds of mischief until his sudden passing in 2005. They loved the outdoors, particularly ďŹ shing and camping in the middle of nowhere. After Dad passed away Mom would meet with friends to go for walks on the beach and inspect the rocks in Qualicum. She really loved her hummingbirds, they gave her such joy as did her love of her garden. Mom was such a gentle and forever stubborn soul. Many thanks is given to the nursing care at NRGH, to Dr. Bell and his Staff and some pretty special friends. Flowers gratefully declined. Any donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation. Funeral service was held at 11 am, December 20, 2012, at Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, 550 Pym St., Parksville BC. Sands ~ Nanaimo 250-753-2032

Elsie Victoria (Cronk) Sutton 1914 – 2012
Elsie Sutton passed away in Nanaimo, BC on December 5, 2012 at the age of 98. She was predeceased by her husband Alfred Earl (Pete) in 2001. Also predeceased by her 5 siblings Bessie, Jimmy, Percy, Lily and George, and her daughter-in-law Noela (Jim). She was the 5th of 6 children born to James and Alice Cronk, in South Wellington, BC, (now part of Nanaimo). When she was very young the family moved to Victoria. Her childhood was spent in Victoria, Shawnigan Lake and Mill Bay. Elsie met her husband Pete when he and his sister attended the birthday party of her oldest sister Bessie. They married 11 years later, in Victoria, where they brought up their family. Elsie was exceptionally talented with a pair of knitting needles, and with it being her favorite hobby. The family was kept warm and fashionable in her many creations. In 1972, she and Pete moved to Parksville and became involved with the “Happy Wanderers� travel group, and made many memorable trips with them over the years across Canada, USA and Europe. Elsie was the life of the party. She kept everyone laughing. Elsie is survived by her 3 children: Jim (Johanne), Dave (Carol), and Susan. Four grandchildren: Toni (Gary), Kylie (Bill), Jason (Trish), and Aleta (John) and five great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Blake, Ryan, Dakota and Taya. Elsie is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including, her special nephew Howie (Noreen) and their four children Ron, Gary, Russell and Colleen, along with each of their families. A private family service is planned.

It was full steam ahead for Oceanside’s Midget Icebreakers last Sunday as they crushed the Cowichan Thunderbirds 6-1 and earned themselves an unbeaten record over the Christmas break. It was the squad’s eighth straight win and has them top of the heap in their 8-team Island league at 8-0. “The girls played great,” head coach Mike Squire confirmed after the latest win — “they’re buying into the systems, and just a great job by (rookie head coach) Marissa Jordan who’s taking over the reigns this year.” Marissa, as reported back in August, was a trailblazer in these parts playing hockey with the boys and helping pave the way for high level female hockey. She was the co-founder, captain, and leading scorer of the Mid Island Blackhawks female hockey team, and this year decided to give back to the game behind the bench. “She’s doing great. The girls have responded really well. It’s a great group of girls, and we’re having a blast,” said Squire, and made the point “having Marissa, a female player-turned coach, it’s inspirational for the girls, and it motivates them to excel more.” The squad is made up mostly of Gr. 10-12s, but they also have three underage players in Gr. 9 “and we also have a Gr. 8.”
One thing for certain, these Icebreakers have teams on their heels in a hurry with loads of give-and-goes, and on Sunday they had the visitors hemmed in their end for most of the game. The two teams played to a scoreless first period tie, and the Icebreakers broke through for a 3-1 lead after the second, and nailed down the win with three more markers in the third. Sophie DeBruyne led the charge with two goals, and Marijke Campbell, Madison Chamberlain, Lexi Kosteckyj and Lindsay Pilton all pitched in with singles. Maddy Meyer was minding the twine for the win in net. “We can definitely put the puck in the net,” Squire confirmed with a chuckle — the Midget Icebreakers have outscored their opponents 49-12 to this point — “but we’re also very strong defensively. What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago the Generals were riding a season-high sixgame win streak and looked to be back on solid footing, but then came last Saturday’s weak-looking loss on home ice to the North Division’s last place Storm, followed by Wednesday night’s 8-2 drubbing at the hands of the Glacier Kings in Comox. Comox took a cross-checking penalty three seconds into that game, and James Sneddon made them pay with a power play marker at the 31 second mark for an early 1-0 Oceanside lead. Comox struck for two goals in two minutes midway through
the opening frame for a 2-1 lead which is how it stood at the first intermission, and they never looked back, scoring two unanswered goals in the second for a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes then torched the Generals for three more power play markers (five straight) to go up 7-1 at the midway point of the third. Riel Gibson got one to go at 13:57 and Comox closed the lid with one more at 15:19. The Generals were outshot 43-19 and was 1-for-9 on the power play; Comox 5-for-9. How did such a promising start to a game unravel so quickly? Comox took three penalties in the first period, Oceanside two.
In the second, the Generals took four penalties to the Kings two, and in the third Oceanside took seven penalties, Comox took eight. After last week’s 4-3 loss to Campbell River, Gens’ head coach and GM made it clear then how he felt about players taking selfish penalties, but there they are on the game sheet: the Generals were given the gate twice for slashing that game, as well as hooking, roughing after the whistle, more roughing, a game misconduct, some elbowing. ON THE UPSIDE, Generals rookie Michael Fretz, dubbed Fretzky by his teammates, was named the VIJHL’s Player of the Week this week.
Fretz, who had two goals and two helpers in the Generals two games last week, has amassed 13 points in his last seven games, which puts him at the top of the leader-board for scoring in the North Division with 22 goals in 29 games. Shifty and fast with a nose for the net, the 5’9” 160 pound left shooting forward also scored his first BCHL goal (on his first BCHL shot) as an affiliate callup with the Nanaimo Clippers Dec. 9 in a win over Surrey. “I’ve never been more excited about a goal,” he said of the memorable marker. On the harder question, about the two recent losses, Fretz was candid in his assessment. “We were not prepared at all to play those teams. We went in thinking we were just going to kill’em and they surprised us. They just outworked us.” Asked how he would grade the team up to the Christmas break, Fretz paused, then replied “probably a B-minus.” GAME ON: The 13-16-2 Generals are home at Oceanside Place Saturday night to take on the North Division leading Nanaimo Buccaneers (16-13-2).

Oceanside’s Peewee Mavericks banded together and went undefeated in four games, blanking the Cowichan Valley Venom 3-0 in the gold medal game and having a blast in their first tourney of the year. In action way up Island Dec. 7-9 in the eightteam Port McNeill Peewee Rec Tournament, Oceanside opened on the Friday night with an 11-0 romp over Port Hardy. They knocked off Nanaimo 5-1 Saturday morning, and followed that up with a 7-3 win over the Alberni Valley Avalanche, which put them straight through to the final Sunday afternoon. “I didn’t expect us to get first, I thought we’d end up middle of the pack (where they are in league play),” one pleased team coach Kevin Kivela said after, “but they just buckled down,
and each game they got better. The whole team did so well...” Backstopping the co-ed squad of 12 and 13 year olds was first-year goalie Shay Frederickson, who coach Kevin said “stood on his head. Best hockey I’ve ever seen him play — he had two shutouts and he kept us in it against Port Alberni. He was outstanding. “Tournaments are great at bringing teams together,” said the dedicated coach, “and I think our team really bonded last weekend, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.” GAME ON The team is home Sunday, Dec. 23 against another Oceanside team then breaks for Christmas through to the second weekend in January.

QB team wins first of four tourneys It may have been cold and wet outside, but that certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the 36 players that turned out at the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club last weekend for the first of four indoor tournaments. Taking first overall in the 12team Mixed Triples tourney was the Qualicum team of Martin Sichert, Ruth Brodie and Bill Davenport “with some good consistent bowling.” The team of Vern Hagstrom and Judy Ritchey (Nanaimo) and Keith Baker (Parksville) finished second, and third place went to Kate Wilson and May Mack-
ay (Nanaimo) and David Childs (Qualicum). “In conjunction with the tournament we held a non-perishable food drive to aid the Salvation Army,” QBLBC’s Jane Nielsen said after, adding “we had a wonderful response from the bowlers and it is nice to know that someone less fortunate than ourselves will be helped out over the Christmas season.” Also earning props from club president Carol Chapman for their contributions were June and John Meaning for organizing the event. — James Clarke

Tea Leaf reader Tanya Lester has relocated to Errington from Salt Spring Island and is offering tea leaf as well as tarot card readings.
“Now turn the teacup upside down and turn it around three times on the saucer, clockwise please,” said tea leaf reader Tanya Lester after I had finished my spearmint lavender blend. “So that’s counterclockwise….” she said politely, “if you wanted a reading about past lives you would do it that way.” Oops. Not the best way to start a reading that was about to give me insight into the most unpredictable corners of my life. Luckily it didn’t faze Lester and I was able to correct my cup’s course. Lester got into tea leaf reading 16 years ago when she was living in Winnipeg. Her friend was having a tea party and thought it would be neat to have a tea leaf reader attend. Lester had purchased a book on the fortune telling method a couple of years before and said her third eye suddenly opened up. “I had this whoa (moment),” she said. “I (thought) I’m supposed to be the person who does the readings at this party.” She thoroughly enjoyed the task and everyone who received a reading was very complementary, she said. She was hooked. A couple years later Lester found out her Lebanese grandmother and great grandmother were both tea leaf readers. Lester has now done thousands of readings and attended workshops around the world including, Glasgow, Scotland; Boulder, Colorado; and Whitehorse, Yukon. She has a background in writing and has published a book called Confessions of a Tea Leaf Reader. Lester is currently in Errington, where she is available for tea leaf

Although there are many different theories about how tea leaf reading works, Lester said she feels people’s energy gets into the cup and she taps into it while connecting with their spirit. She looks at the remaining leaves in the cup and things begin to channel through her. Lester said she enjoys communicating and connecting with people when reading their tea leaves, as well as the challenge of translating the thoughts and images that come to her into words. During my reading in Errington last week, when she asked me to concentrate on something in particular, the first thing that jumped to mind was my husband and young daughters. “Right away I saw a heart, a really nice, solid heart,” she beamed. Lester went on to identify that I had two girls, correctly identifying their relationship and how it would look down the road. She surprised me with accurate information about family and gave me some timely advice. Lester said people can ask questions and have both light hearted and deep readings, but either way they usually leave feeling elated. Just don’t turn your cup counterclockwise, unless you want to find out you were some sort of Egyptian high priestess. Gabriola acting troupe Radio After Dark put on a brilliant performance at the Black Goose Inn Dec.17. The five-person cast recreated the classic Christmas tale Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer impeccably, as it would have appeared back in radio’s glory days. The talented actors sang songs accompanied by keyboard in the cozy wooden setting, while perfecting voices like Yukon Cornelius, Hermey the dentist, Rudolph and the Abominable Snow Monster. The actors used props and crinkled egg cartons, tooted horns and scraped styrofoam to get the perfect sound effects. The cast returned after a sold out show at the same venue on Halloween. Residents filled the tables and the upstairs balcony of the Black Goose Inn for the Christmas performances early this week, while enjoying British Pub Fare.

Central Island residents still have one more chance to both bleed and feed. The third annual Canadian Blood Services Bleed and Feed campaign has been ongoing in Parksville since the beginning of the month, with residents being asked to not only donate blood, but also non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army food bank. Response has been strong, said Canadian Blood Services representative Marcelo Dominguez,
but there is still an opportunity for people to take part in the program as they relax over the holidays. “It’s essentially a partnership between Canadian Blood Services and Foodbanks B.C.,” he said. “We are looking for blood donors to bring in non-perishable food items for the food bank. We still have open appointments on Boxing Day.” The clinic is being held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. To register for the program, call toll-free to 1-888-236-6283.
