Belmont students aim high

Smoked fish makes its way into holilday hampers thanks to derby The Bite-Me Fishing Derby donated 150 pounds of smoked salmon to the West Shore Christmas Hamper Fund.

“The three biggest fish become property of the derby and this is a great opportunity to give back to the community and for families to get a nice treat,” said Metchosin fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop. The derby is hosted by the Metchosin fire department.

The fish came from the top three in the August derby. The fish was divided into 41 packages to be added to hampers for individuals and families across the West Shore.

Campaign expected to reach its lofty goal of 10,000 items

elmont students nearly hit their mark of collecting 10,000 items of food in one night for the Goldstream Food Bank, and expect to exceed it by Christmas break.

Student volunteers collected 9,145 items of food going door-to-door to residences during a three-hour period on last Wednesday. Generous souls also donated $250 in cash and one person donated a $150 gift card from a local grocery store.

With donations still being accepted students expect the 10,000-item goal will be reached by the time the school goes to Christmas break.

About 200 stuKyle Wells dents and teacher Reporting volunteers helped run the event, with some also volunteering their time the next day to help sort the food at the food bank.

“It’s so great. So many people had fun, everybody had great things to say,” said Grade 12 student and event co-organizer Samantha Quesnelle.

“When people have fun doing something like that it always brings our school community closer. … This is definitely a campaign that is going to live on at Belmont.” kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

Cookies creates better living for four-legged friends Two years of collecting recyclables is helping animals in need.

Cookie Taylor of Cookies Critter Care collects bottles for animal rescue and supplies.

“I’ve worked with rescues before and I don’t like the politics so I want to be a part of bringing in the money,” said Taylor. “That way I’m helping out.”

Donations over the past two years total $11,000 along with food and other pet supplies.

Currently the funds go to Victoria Adoptables and Animal Crusaders.

“I do it year round. People can call or email any time and I’ll come pick up,” she said.

She does the sorting and will even swap out recycling bins if needed.

“It might only be five cents per can, but every nickle adds up,” she said. “The money all goes to a good cause, and it reduces waste.”

abric and wool crafted into creations raised $3,000 for the Goldstream Food Bank.

Sylvia Ratcliffe, owner of Cloth Castle is pleased with the work her staff put into the auction they’ve held the last two years.

“Once a year they make samples in the store,” she said.

“Then at the end of the years they take those samples … at the end they have an auction of all the quilts and runners.”

The staff, families and customers came out and bought

more than 90 items ranging from quilts to table runners covering all seasons to add to the food bank coffers over the holiday season.

“The customers get excited about getting involved in it too,” Ratcliffe said.

The Fare Fight for Food campaign that crossed the nation scored big on the West Shore.

Competition between Bentall Kennedy managed shopping centres, from B.C. to Ontario, the company will donate $279,115 and 366,291 pounds of food to benefit food banks in 22 communities across Canada. “Our fundraising teams have more than tripled our original goals of raising $75,000 and 75,000 pounds of food,” said Bonney Rempel, regional director, of Marketing Retail Services West.

The Westshore Town Centre collected 3,667 pounds of food and $5,067.

“The Fare Fight for Food has been a wonderful incentive Bentall Kennedy took on at the Westshore Town Centre,” said local food bank president Gayle Ireland. “The Goldstream Food Bank is extremely appreciative of Westshore’s ongoing support and we know our clients are too.”

The campaign launched in February and ended Oct 31.

RCMP arrest pair in stolen car William Head expects growth Police say stop relates back to multiple offences up Island

Two people face charges after a traffic stop connected to crimes in Duncan and Chemainus.

Just before 10 a.m. last Wednesday (Dec. 12) West Shore RCMP received a call from a person concerned over the erratic driving of a grey Nissan heading southbound on the Trans Canada

Highway.

It turned out the vehicle had been reported stolen the night before in Oak Bay. The vehicle turned off the highway at Goldstream Park and police pulled it over on Falcon Heights Road.

Police arrested a 42-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman.

Further investigation found the suspects related to a business break-in in Duncan and a theft from a vehicle outside a restaurant in Chemainus.

Stolen property was found in the vehicle.

“What a citizen reports as a less serious offence may be just the tip of a larger series of events,” said Staff Sgt. Danny Willis of West Shore RCMP. The two people arrested face charges of theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property.

Further charges are expected from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment. news@goldstreamgazette.com

Predicting the future of William Head Institution includes more inmates and the possibility of more incarcerated people working outside the prison, says Dave Clouston, deputy warden of William Head Institution.

The facility has space to hold up to 200 inmates at a time, but for the past nine years only about 120 inmates are held at the facility.

“Over the next few years we anticipate an increase in inmates,” Clouston said.

As a federal institution all the offenders have varying sentences spanning from two years to life.

“In minimum security they are usually getting prepared for release,” Clouston said. “They are a lower risk to the community, but that is not to say they are low risk.”

Getting inmates ready for release entails escorted trips into the community for Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, counseling, family funerals and work experience.

“We are seeking to find more employment opportunities for inmates,” Clouston said. “So when they get out they can compete for employment.”

The District of Metchosin hired inmates to paint the exterior of the municipal hall in 2010. It was one of the first jobs for inmates, said Clouston.

“They got paid minimum wage which is more money than they make (working) in the prison,” Clouston said.

AA and NA meetings are also offered internally at the facility along with sex offender maintenance and anger management programs.

William Head Institution and federal prisons across the country are working on plans to help aid inmates with mental health needs.

“In our institution offenders need to cook and clean for themselves,” Clouston said explaining the importance of inmates mental health and communication skills.

About a quarter of the population at the institution is First Nations. The prison offers the Pathways program teaching traditional native ceremonies including sweat lodges and fasting. A Coast Salish and Nuu-cha-nulth elder both work at the prison. charla@goldstreamgazette.com

Brotherston faces sentencing in Victoria Kyle Wells News staff

Pleading guilty in the B.C. Supreme Court, Gregory Brotherston awaited his sentencing as spectators learned of the facts behind his charge of manslaughter.

The two-day sentencing spanned over Dec. 17 and 18. The actual sentencing occurred after the New’s Gazette’s deadline.

On Monday Brotherston re-entered his plea of guilty in front of the judge and the court room.

Crown counsel Laureen Nowlan-Card read from a statement of facts agreed upon by both sides of the hearing and explained what happened in the incident leading up to the death of Colwood resident Richard Green, 57.

The court heard from the Crown how both Brotherston and Green were at the Country Rose Pub, Oct. 8.

Greg Brotherston Brotherston, a Highlands resident, went to the pub to meet an ex-girlfriend. Green, who was a regular at the pub, was there with a friend.

she slapped him and left the pub.

Brotherston followed her. Green overheard the commotion and he and his friend decided to go outside for a cigarette and to make sure everything was OK. Brotherston and the woman continued to argue outside where she continued to slap and punch him.

The court heard Brotherston never hit or struck the woman at any point.

Green approached the arguing couple while Brotherston was holding on to her sweater to stop her from leaving. Brotherston was threatening to call the police and charge the woman with assault and asked Green to be a witness.

Green told Brotherston he didn’t see the woman strike him and urged Brotherston to leave.

Brotherston started to argue with Green, telling him “This has nothing to do with you” and “stay out of this.”

At this point Brotherston was in Green’s face when he hit Green across the jaw and cheek with an open-handed strike.

Green fell to ground without buckling, stumbling or breaking his fall, a sign the blow had knocked Green unconscious or stunned

VR gets dock guidelines Kyle Wells News staff

View Royal town council has adopted a set of guidelines for Esquimalt Harbour that will help set a standard for new dock applications.

The town developed the guidelines with the help of two residentcomposed committees, one of waterfront owners and one of waterfront users. Each committee, as well as View Royal staff, came up with its own set of proposed guidelines.

In what seemed like a surprise to those involved, the groups came up with relatively similar guidelines.

“These guidelines, in my opinion, reflect a balanced perspective on the values held by all stakeholders,” said James Davison, town planning technician. “I think we’ve done a really good job as a whole, as a town, as advisory groups.”

“Essentially what we have done tonight is endorsed our advisory committee recommendations 100 per cent, with the exception of five metres,” Coun. David Screech said.

The main discrepancy between staff and waterfront owners was over dock size guidelines. Staff recommended 18 metres be set as the standard for dock length, while waterfront owners recommended 30 metres, with a various safety and marine concerns backing up their number.

In the end council decided to bridge the gap and settled on 25 metres, while reminding everyone each new dock will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and if there is good reason to build a longer dock, that would be considered.

Some residents voiced concerns over the guidelines turning into hard rules, but both council and staff assured them the guidelines are intended only as a starting point for approaching applications. The guidelines also only apply to new or replacement docks, not existing ones.

The Department of National defence, which essentially has the final say on dock regulations said residents with docks without permits of occupation will be asked to meet the standards.

Richard Green remembered More than a dozen victim impact statements were submitted, with many read out in court by Crown counsel.

Family, friends and employees of the Country Rose Pub wrote of a man respected and loved. Brotherston was visibly emotional during the reading of the statements.

Emotions ran high in the courtroom as the victim’s son, Kevin Green, described the severe and irreversible damage his father’s death has caused.

He described the strong relationship that the two had, especially in recent years, and said he has not only lost his father but he has lost all of the time they would have spent together. Kevin Green said he still feels in shock and cannot grasp that his father is gone.

Outside of the courtroom, Kevin Green said he wished for a harsh sentence for Brotherston.

“The guy deserves life, I’m not going to beat around the bush,” Kevin Green said. “It’s not easy losing a parent.” him before he hit the ground.

When Green fell, his head struck the pavement and fractured his skull. The resulting brain injury caused his death in hospital seven days later.

After Green fell, Brotherston started apologizing to him and begged him to wake up. He asked the others there not to call 911.

Brotherston then left before emergency crews arrived.

Crown asked the judge for a fourto six-year sentence, as a means

of deterrence and denunciation.

Brotherston’s defence asked for a sentence of one to two years, less a day, arguing that given Brotherston slapped Green and that the strike caused no injury, Brotherston never intended to cause Green serious harm.

“Mr. Brotherston could have walked away,” Nowlan-Card said.

“For that reason the moral blameworthiness that should attach to this is high.” kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

As a newborn, Ethan Schandl had severe reflux and troubles eating, sleeping and feeding.

His mother Fiona Schandl was sent home from the hospital without an explanation, told only that her baby was failing to thrive. Three years of testing eventually led to a diagnosis for the Schandls, one that offered little relief from their daily struggles.

Ethan is allergic to food.

Now five years old and just 15 kilograms, Ethan lives off a diet of broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, squash, yams, applesauce and hypoallergenic formula.

“It’s an ongoing battle,” Schandl said of her son’s eosinophilic esophagitis. “It’s something that he’s going to have to live with forever. It’s not a static condition either, so these six things that he has tested fine for could turn on him at any point.”

Ethan works with a host of medical professionals for issues related to his allergies, as well as one weak leg and core muscle issues. The Schandls have long been connected to a team at the Children’s Health Foundation

in Saanich, from occupational therapists and physiotherapists to speech pathologists and dieticians. This year the foundation’s Bear Essentials program gave $1,000 toward horseback riding lessons for Ethan, a therapy intended to strengthen weak muscles, a result of his nutrient deficiencies.

The sessions yielded unexpected results for Schandl.

“It gave him an activity for him that wasn’t food related, that didn’t need a lot of energy,” she said. “He absolutely loves it.

It’s his special time, a time that he’s able to control things. With his diet, we very much control it, but with the horseback riding, they let him take the lead and tell them what he wants the horse to do.”

Ethan is currently trying to eat chicken, beef and oats. Schandl had added pork and corn to his diet, and both caused adverse reactions. Each time new food trials begin, so do the rounds of scopes and biopsies to determine whether or not his body

Despite the ongoing hospital stays and physical challenges his leg presents, Schandl says her son is pleasant to be around.

“He’s lovely, happy and smiley and super funny. He suffers a lot, but you really wouldn’t know it to see him.”

New isolation room opens in Victoria The new pediatric isolation room at Victoria General Hospital is open. The room is used to treat children fighting cancer.

“The greatest portion of funds raised for this project came from families whose children have experienced cancer and benefited from the care at Victoria General Hospital. They gathered together through a number of events to raise these dollars and inspire our community,” said Melanie McKenzie, executive director of Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

The new isolation room will protect children from infection when their immune system is compromised and provide additional clinic space to allow more children to receive chemotherapy and supportive care closer to home.

“When you have a child with cancer it exhausts you emotionally and it affects everybody who knows you,” said Derrick Hamilton, whose daughter Jaimey has been cared for in the Pediatric Oncology Unit at VGH since 2005.

VGH is Vancouver Island’s pediatric specialty hospital, treating 90 per cent of Island children.

Seniors deserve society’s respect T

here are more than 5,000 seniors in the Greater Victoria area who may have been victims of abuse. It’s a shameful statistic and one that deserves our attention.

A good start would be to dispel the myths surrounding the issue.

The most dangerous of these myths would have us identify “stranger danger” as the main problem. It’s somehow easier to assume that senior abuse is primarily economic and that the problem rests with dishonest tradesmen, con artists and other outsiders who prey on the elderly. It’s the same sort of fuzzy thinking that for years, had us looking out for strangers as the culprits behind child abuse.

The disturbing truth is that the vast majority of abuse for both seniors and children arises from individuals whom they know, love and trust.

That raises the uncomfortable question of why people who are close to seniors might become abusers.

In part, it appears that it’s based on a misconception of seniors as people who have lost the ability to make their own decisions or comprehend what’s going on around them. That infantilizing is insidious, yet it’s propagated even within mainstream media.

One well-known series of commercials features two elderly men so befuddled with the world that, they question the day of the week when they see a bank open on a Sunday, for example.

While some seniors do have a loss of cognitive skills, the vast majority do not.

They may slow down physically, and they may process information at a slightly different rate, but they do not lose the right to selfdetermination. When friends, family and loved ones begin to take away the right to make decisions about finances, relationships, diet, travel – the basics of life – the cycle of abuse can begin.

It’s a complex issue, but the answers can’t be found in the the duplication of programs designed to halt child abuse. Seniors are not children or even child-like. Perhaps that realization is the first step to addressing the harm to which some of them are subjected.

There’s more to happiness than just having a clean environment – and Bhutan has yet to get there. According to research for the UN Conference on Happiness, “The happiest countries in the world are all in Northern Europe (Denmark, Norway, Finland, Netherlands).”

Although these countries are wealthy, the study points out that money isn’t the only factor, as happiness is decreasing in countries like the U.S. “Political

freedom, strong social networks and an absence of corruption are together more important than income in explaining wellbeing differences between the top and bottom countries,” the researchers write. “At the individual level, good mental and physical health, someone to count on, job security and stable families are crucial.” Note that the happiest countries all have healthy economies and robust social programs.

We can also look at how various countries responded to the recent economic crisis.

Those that bailed out banks and reduced social spending are facing the same kinds of problems as before. Iceland approached its massive financial meltdown in a way that was pretty much the opposite of that taken by the U.S. and Europe, refusing to rescue its banks and increasing social spending, among other measures.

Iceland still has problems, but it has recovered faster than

other nations and its social safety net remains strong. Inequality has been reduced, and the crisis spurred citizens to propose and develop a new constitution, which is being considered by parliament.

There’s an old saw that says the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. In the case of leaders who focus almost entirely on economic growth and corporate interests, it’s a recipe for disaster.

As George Monbiot recently wrote in the U.K.’s Guardian, “In return for 150 years of explosive consumption, much of which does nothing to advance human welfare, we are atomising the natural world and the human systems that depend on it.”

I was glad to see John McGuire’s letter re: the burning of leaves (Letters Dec. 5).

They of course should be composted not burned. There are only a few people in the Langford Lake area who do this burning and perhaps when they read of how burning pollutes the atmosphere they will stop doing it.

Of course the city council should ban same and show that they support the majority view on burning.

When he retires in May, former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Murray Coell will start collecting his MLA pension of $89,000 a year. At least eight of his Liberal colleagues will also begin collecting MLA pensions for the rest of their lives.

BCS takes senior services online Web site links seniors to various regional services

Faced with the threat of mandatory influenza immunizations, staff at the Vancouver Island Health Authority upped the participation rate. So far this year, 62 per cent of staff have been immunized. That’s up from 38 per cent by the same time last year.

Many seniors are aware of the services available to them, but locating those services can sometimes be overwhelming.

For the first time, Beacon Community Services has put all of those resources in one place, online at beaconconnects.ca.

“We’ve tailored the website specifically to the needs of what we’ve seen our home support providers needing,” said Beacon CEO Isobel Mackenzie.

The website groups services into categories such as transportation, medication and drugs, food and meals, and financial and legal resources.

“A lot of seniors don’t realize not just rebates are available to them, but programs available for adaptations in their home, as well as some of the requirements they still have around their income tax,” Mackenzie said.

Other seniors may want to apply for a handicapped parking pass, but may not know who to call, she said.

“There was not a comprehensive website such as we’ve put together with Beacon Connects.

We created it as a standalone website, because that’s what the problem was – you were having to weave through a bunch of steps on other sites,” Mackenzie said.

About 20 per cent of seniors receiving home support already access Beacon’s online services,

a number that is sure to increase in the coming years, she said.

“I think this idea that seniors aren’t tech savvy is quite erroneous. They have a lot of time to work through these things. My own dad is way ahead of me.”

Beacon Community Services partners with VIHA in the delivery of home support services to more than 3,000 clients each day and has almost 40 years of experience in working with seniors.

Lifelong Bach enthusiasts Michael Drislane and David Barss will bring the legend to life with a Christmas concert at St. John the Divine this Saturday.

The Victoria Bach Ensemble features violin, cello, flute, trumpet, keyboards, bass and a pair of voices as they bring the season to life with a Bach Christmas.

“We’re lucky because Victoria has a lot of good musicians. So it’s a great experience to work with people who really want to play,” Drislane said. “It’s one of those great music, great players scenarios that should be fun for all involved.”

The ensemble the pair started about a year ago likes to keep it clean and simple – one player per part. No conductor required, each player becomes a single voice.

“It leads to a very pure uncluttered sound,” Barss said. “It’s more of an intimate experience because you can hear every

The concert will include Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major, chorale prelude Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland and selections from Christmas Oratorio, Cantatas 36, 51, and 140 Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, Art of the Fugue.

“The only one that maybe isn’t advent or Christmas is the Brandenburg Concerto,” Barss said.

Pink Mountaintops will be performing at the former Harpo’s, now the Upstairs Cabaret, 5 Bastion Sq., Dec. 5 – a place where the group’s leader Stephen McBean cut his teeth performing with his thrash band Mission of Christ in the late ‘80s.

Pink Mountaintops is Stephen McBean, the eccentric, psychedelic genius behind the Vancouver-based band Black Mountain.

McBean has been in numerous groups over the last two decades. As a 13-year old, he was in the legendary band Jerk Ward, playing hardcore influenced by the Neos, Discharge, Crucifix and whoever else was the fastest.

His other bands to date have been straight out punk: a crusty punk/metal band, and of course, Black Mountain.

From the release of their debut album – a psych-tinged

maximal rock assault – Black Mountain has been at the forefront of the new psychedelic movement, capturing heaps of critical acclaim resulting in tour dates with Coldplay and others around the world.

Their most recent CD Wilderness Heart reached No. 94 on the Billboard top 100 and was named as a longlisted nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.

McBean’s more experimental and electronic side project has been described as a thumping, buzzing, blissful haze, at various parts sounding like the Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3 or the Jesus and Mary Chain circa Psycho Candy.

This concert is the second in a series of semi-annual events that will reunite the beloved venue with some of the revered groups who were part of its glory days – all in support of

local charities and not-for-profit groups.

These events will be curated by the same people who brought groups like Sarah McLachlan, Pearl Jam, John Lee Hooker, Green Day, The Neville Brothers, No Doubt and thousands more to Victoria in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

The Pink Mountaintops concert is a benefit for The Victoria Society For Children With Autism and the local families that depend on it for support, information and respite funds.

Tickets for the benefit show on Friday Dec. 21 are $15 and are available at Ditch and Lyle’s Place. Doors open at 7 p.m., show begins at 10 p.m.

There will be more donation opportunities at the venue.

Les Amusements de la Chambre is a Canadian chamber ensemble specializing in the performance of music for early keyboard and strings. Founded

by Clark and Redhead at The Banff Centre in 2010, the ensemble explores repertoire from the 17th

century to contemporary works of today.

Les Amusements has distinguished itself through creative presentations of the 18th century concert experience. Based in Victoria and Montréal, the ensemble collaborates with a variable pool of musicians in concert and frequently performs and commissions works by Canadian composers.

Just past the halfway point of the season, it’s safe to say the South Island Royals of the B.C. Major Midget League have settled into their new home with relative success.

The Royals (7-11-5) hosted and split the weekend’s two game set with the Greater Vancouver Canadians (11-8-2) at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, winning 5-1 on Saturday afternoon and losing 3-1 on Sunday morning.

The win is the Royals’ seventh, which is more than double last year’s three-win season.

“Compared to last year we’ve taken some strides, the guys are feeling good about what we’re doing,” head coach Geoff Grimwood said. “Saturday was a tremendous team effort from the goalie out. (Sunday) we had a tough time breaking through, we felt if we got the second one we would have broke it open.”

Goalie Jesse Jenks played both games for the Royals, getting his fifth win on Saturday. He was supported by goals

from Brodie Smith, Ethan Waitzner, Jordan Martin, Cole Pickup and Brandon Tutte. Pickup scored the only goal in Sunday’s 3-1 loss.

“We ran into a hot goalie today,” said Smith, a 15-year-old who scored the first goal on Saturday, his first game back after three weeks off due to an infected foot. “(Saturday) we got one first and got the momentum in our hand. (Sunday) everyone was pumped again, but they scored first and it just felt like we were playing from behind.”

Sunday also marked the last game for the Royals before the holiday break, though the group will practice all this week.

“We spent some time talking to the guys (Sunday) and let them know the improvement from four months ago is significant,” the coach said.

Grimwood’s first season heading the high performance program of 15 to 17 year olds (he served the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Powell River Kings of the B.C. Hockey League) is also the first season of the new relationship between the Western Hockey League Victoria Royals, and the major midget Royals, previously known as the Thunderbirds.

Part of the relationship is Grimwood’s dual position, as both the head coach of the midget team and an assistant coach with the WHL Royals.

The biggest change within the partnership is the midget Royals access to Memorial Centre. Until this year, the Thunderbirds played and practised in arenas from North Saanich to Duncan.

Now the program is transitioning from a nomadic existence to a junior A mentality.

“The new partnership is a real advantage, it’s given us a team dressing room, a team gym facility and a chance to build a program in a home, which has been lacking in the past,” Grimwood said.

The South Island Royals season returns with a road trip against the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in Chilliwack on Jan. 5 and Abbotsford on Jan. 6.

WHL futures Pickup (13 goals, 28 points in 22 games) leads the team in scoring. He and Waitzner are property of the WHL Prince George Cougars. Last week’s rule change that is meant to minimize and eventually remove fighting from box lacrosse is being met with resistance.

The Western Lacrosse Association is not ready to give up fighting and is looking for more information regarding the Canadian Lacrosse Association’s change to Rule 45.

The rule change states that any player deemed a willing combatant in a fight will be assessed an automatic ejection from the game.

Initially the WLA stated it would abide by the rule change. But on Thursday the WLA board of governors held a teleconference meeting. Contrary to one report, the teleconference was not a “yay or nay” vote to accept or reject the rule, said commissioner Casey Cook.

Rather, the league instructed the commissioner and assistant commissioner to gather more information, so as to make recommendations on how Rule 45 can be applied in a more effective manner, Cook said.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, the league is looking at its options. We’re in information gathering mode to see what we can do to see a better way to introduce the rule.”

The 2013 season starts in May and there’s plenty of time to iron out the rule, or find a way around it. One of the greater concerns at the moment is that the ejection rule does not do enough to eliminate fighting, which will simply evolve into a more timely element of the game.

“We want to get this rule change out of the way to know where we’re headed, but to say we’ve got a gun to our head to do that would be characterizing it incorrectly,” Cook said.

The Oak Bay Bays open the 2012 Gary Taylor Invitational boys basketball tournament against the Lambrick Park Lions Thursday (Dec. 20) at 2 p.m.

It’s going to be three days of elite high school basketball with AAA No. 10 ranked Vancouver College, AA No. 1-ranked St. Michaels Blue Jaguars, and two of Saskatchewan’s top teams, Aden Bowman and Campbell Collegiate, as well as Belmont and Cowichan.

This year’s Bays squad has big hopes, with Team B.C. players Liam Horne and Matt Hampton leading the way in their senior year. The duo is surrounded by a strong and athletic squad, Bays coach Chris Franklin said.

Running the table undefeated this weekend will be a huge test for the Bays.

“The Saskatchewan teams are bringing some of the top players in their province and are highly ranked,” Franklin said.

If the Bays can get past Lambrick, ranked No. 7 among AA schools in B.C., they’ll face the winner of Van College and Belmont. St. Mikes will also face a big test as they draw Aden Bowman at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The Gary Taylor is one of the few chances for the AA Blue Jags and AAA Bays to meet, though it’ll have to be in the final. sports@vicnews.com

B.C. Ferries is adding more than 120 sailings during the busy holiday travel period.

Between Dec. 19 and Jan. 6, the TsawwassenSwartz Bay run will see an extra 86 sailings.

Another 36 sailings will be added to the Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay run between the Lower Mainland and Nanaimo.

Boxing Day and Dec. 27 are expected to be the busiest days for ferry travel, while Christmas Day and New Year’s Day will see reduced sailings on some routes.

It estimates the initial capital cost will be $5.4 million to set up commuter rail service between Langford and Vic West.

Desjardins said she is urging View Royal and Victoria to follow suit.

“Assuming the Island Corridor Foundation will restore the corridor, there’s no reason why we couldn’t move ahead with discussions on this,” she said.

Maritime programming grows New ideas in works for coming year Roszan Holmen News staff

With a long-term goal of moving to a location on the harbour, the Maritime Museum of British Columbia is focusing on improving its product in the meantime.

“We’re here for the next five years,” executive director Jon Irwin said, referring to the museum’s current site in Bastion Square.

Last year, the museum launched children’s summer camps and more interactive programming. In the year to come, it looks to build on these successes, including a plan to buy flat screen televisions to enhance its displays.

“It’s another medium for exhibits, so we can animate and bring stories to life,” Irwin said.

Another plan in the works is connecting with oldtimer maritimers.

“One of the ideas is to do interviews with these people and capture their stories. Victoria has many people with a maritime background and a lot of these people are getting quite senior,” Irwin said.

The museum’s new fundraising campaign has a $30,000 goal.
