Small stones or large grains of sand?

Just ask Campbell River resident Al Pelletier who must replace his Jeep’s windshield after it lost a battle with a three centimetre pebble that was part of the sand mixture sprayed on icy Jubilee Parkway by highways crews.

“Having spent my life working in the military in Nova Scotia and Manitoba I know what sand on snow and ice should look like.

This isn’t it,” Pelletier says. “This mix is dangerous and costly. How many windshields got broken that day?”

Last Friday morning Pelletier was driving down Jubilee Parkway to connect to the lower highway.

“I noticed that the highway had been sanded and could feel it under the wheels of my Jeep,” he says. “An oncoming vehicle threw a rock right into my windshield.

I stopped on the side of the road and had a look at the sand. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing ... rocks up to three centimetres in size were mixed in with the sand.”

Pelletier walked both sides of the Parkway and collected samples.

“This wasn’t just a fluke,” he says. “The larger pieces were in the 1.5 to 2 cm range. This isn’t sand. It’s sand and gravel mixed.”

highway ministry’s standard. They said I should be happy with whatever was sprayed as it is better to be able to come to a stop safely than worry about the size of the sand.”

Pelletier also called ICBC but didn’t get anywhere. “They didn’t care. ‘Just get your windshield fixed and pay your deductible’ was the best I could get out of them.

“I won’t drive down the Jubilee Parkway anymore when there

has been a freeze up,” Pelletier says. He believes Emcon should be spraying sand that has been sifted with nothing bigger than two millimetre pieces making their way into the sand mix.

“This is a parkway with a speed limit of 80 km. Nothing other than sand should be sprayed on a road with that kind of speed limit. I advise everyone to be careful. You don’t stand a chance with this stuff.”

Hamper Fund still needs some help The Knights of Columbus is thanking the community for their increased response to the needs of the Community Christmas Hamper Fund.

Various organizations and clubs as well as individual members of the community have been to the depot in the Tyee Plaza bringing food, toys and money to help them achieve their goal. This year there will be 1,202 hampers assembled and delivered.

But as of Friday, the fund had reached 73.4 per cent of the money required to pay for the food that has been purchased to augment that which has been brought in to the depot. One hundred per cent of the money donated is used to purchase the additional food required. No money is spent on toys as the community supplies those.

There are still a few days left to make a donation to allow the Knights to meet their obligations.

Their depot is located between the former SuperValu store and Banners restaurant and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number is 250-286-6361. The delivery date for the hampers is this Saturday and the Knights once again ask for help in assembling the hampers and then in their delivery. While some help is required on Friday afternoon, the majority of the volunteer effort is required for Saturday morning at 8 a.m.

The Campbell River father of Marnie Frey, one of Robert Pickton’s victims, is upset that he lives in a province that values missing fish more than the lives of missing and murdered women.

Rick Frey says key witnesses, such as workers from the Pickton farm, that should have testified at the Wally Oppal inquiry were not called in order to keep costs down.

“But, there was no shortage of police witnesses,” he says.

He says the recent Cohen Commission to investigate the disappearance of the Fraser River sockeye salmon lasted three years and cost $26 million while Oppal’s investigation lasted half that time and cost $10 million. Oppal delivered his 1,450-page report in Vancouver on Monday.

“Are we saying fish are more important than murdered women?

Give me a break,” Frey says.

Marnie’s father also believes the inquiry should have “captured” the cases of another 20 missing women dating back to 1983 rather than having the inves-

tigation timeline start in 1997.

However, Frey says he is “more than pleased that Oppal came down on the Vancouver Police Department and the RCMP.” T he for mer B.C. attorney general has recommended the establishment of a regional police force in Greater Vancouver.

He identified “systemic bias” in the police response to the women that went missing from the Downtown Eastside. Marnie, who had a daughter Brittney in 1992, is reported to have been exposed to drugs through an Asian gang in Campbell River and to have drifted away from home to the streets of Vancouver.

In his victim impact statement Frey said: “Marnie disappeared in 1997 and we didn’t find out for sure what had happened to her until well into 2002.

All of this waiting has taken a terrible toll on our mental well-being.

“Brittney, whom we adopted in 1993, has had to endure cruel taunts at school, such as on hotdog day she was asked what it’s like to eat her mother.

“I was asked on one occasion to pick her up from school because

three girls were picking on her about her mother. She had to leave school as a result of this. Having to deal with Brittney’s school in relation to their handling of this bullying was very difficult for me and my wife, Lynn.

“Our family will forever be tormented by visions of what happened to our loved one, our daughter … an innocent woman caught in the wrong time and place.”

Frey says there’s been one problem after another starting with victims’ services back in 2002 which “alienated the families who were not allowed to talk to one another.”

Mar nie’s mother Lynn Frey says: “This inquiry didn’t give us any ending to the chapter of the book we have been reading for 15 years. We are still not any further ahead today than we were when I first started looking for Marnie in 1997.

“We need a national inquiry so we can get to the bottom of all the crap that has never been told.”

Rick Frey has little faith that Wally Oppal’s recommendations will result in real change.

“You have to have a government that’s willing to go the distance to make these changes,” he says.

A city project to transform the downtown core is estimated to cost more than $2 million.

Jason Hartley, the city’s capital works manager, said in a report to council that the Downtown Revitalization Project “is currently budgeted at a total cost of $2.37

million with existing funds identified in the approved 2012 Capital Plan in the Water, Sewer and General Capital Reserve funds.”

However, that figure

is not finalized as the city still has to account for enhanced surface works, such as expanding pedestrian space and connecting City Hall to the waterfront.

The city has hired urban planning firm Dialog to develop a concept design for the surface works.

The four areas the company and the city are focusing on are: connecting the waterfront and Robert Ostler Park to City Hall park space; designing shared public, private and multi function spaces; animating the public realm; and improving pedestrian space. The concept calls for more pedestrian space along Alder Street in front of Scotiabank, turning Dubeau Street (the lane behind Shoppers Row) into a pedestrian boulevard and transforming parking spaces into public spaces such as farmers markers.

The detailed design of the project is expected to be completed March 19, 2013 and the construction portion of the project awarded to the successful bidder

by April 30.

Construction is expected to be completed Oct. 30.

But the city will have its work cut out for it, as aging infrastructure will have to be replaced.

“The condition of all the city’s utilities has been assessed and it has been determined that the water, sewer and storm in this area are requiring of replacement due to deteriorated condition,” Hartley said in his report. “It has also been determined that the existing ground conditions are poor, resulting in requirement for complete reconstruction of sub grade structural soils.”

The city held an open house Dec. 3 to gather public input into the project.

“Comments received were generally in support of the project proceeding with acknowledgement of the need to find the balance between form of the space and the functional aspects of activities that occur in this precinct,” Hartley said.

The city’s project is adjacent to the new headquarters building being constructed

by Seymour Pacific, which prompted the city to accelerate its St.Ann’s block project to coincide with Seymour Pacific’s construction.

Community spirited Timberline Secondary students flying under the banner “Take Action Against Graffiti” (TAAG) have come to the rescue of a Willow Point businessman who has been repeatedly victimized by a spray painting vandal who may be a troubled Timberline student.

The paint party of Timberline students also included Timberline Principal Kevin Harrison and School District #72 lead hand painter Rick Robertson. The work party arrived at the Sunshine Square office complex Friday at lunch hour and returned in the late afternoon to reclaim more than 30 metres of exterior walls and doors that were defaced in November.

The building is owned

by Orla Jensen. His property was targeted by taggers five times in two weeks and the latest graffiti included an ominous message: “I want to kill you.”

Harrison says the painters are from a group of Timberline student advocates and “this is their way of showing the community teenagers care as well.”

“These are kids who have been chosen by teachers and their friends because they are willing to stand up for others,” Harrison says. “Now I have a group of students I can approach for just about anything. This month their mandate is – ‘it’s cool to be kind.’ When I saw the article about this vandalism in the Mirror I phoned Orla

and said I have a group of students who want to help out.”

Jensen was beaming.

“These aren’t kids t h e s e a r e yo u n g adults,” Jensen says.

“The kids who did this in the first place are still kids. These students here today are on the ball. They are our future leaders. For them to take on this project is fantastic.”

Jensen also thanked Cloverdale Paint for donating the paint and roller sleeves.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Troy Beauregard says the police are still following leads in the case. They believe one person is involved in the graffiti incident and Beauregard warns that the offender could be subject to multiple charges when caught because the police are keeping track of all similar events.

A few years ago the Willow Point Business Improvement Association posted a reward, but the vandalism stopped and no one was caught. Police have promised anonymity if people with information about the graffiti come forward.

A

Campbell River ship yard has been making a name for itself, beating out much larger marine centres for working contracts and providing a boost to the local economy in the process.

Ocean Pacific, which specializes in marine repair, on Monday morning sent off a Navy tug it performed a complete refit on and just two hours later welcomed another large project – an RCMP vessel.

It seems senior levels of government are confident in Ocean Pacific which strives to live up to its policy of “top quality products and services delivered on.”

Bruce Kempling, president of Ocean Pacific, said he’s not surprised.

“I think along with the rest of the town, we’ve got the experience,” he said. “Camp-

bell River’s got a good, experienced wellequipped workforce.”

Kempling said the local company has to bid on every government contract it lands and is up against companies all along the coast, including in Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo.

On Monday, crews at Ocean Pacific saw the Navy tug Tillicum off.

The vessel, which works in the Esquimalt Harbour, arrived in Campbell River in late August for a complete refit which involves removing and repairing the craft’s operating system, as well as hull work, and sandblasting and painting the entire vessel.

Many of those jobs are sub-contracted out

by Ocean Pacific to local businesses which also stand to benefit each time Ocean Pacific successfully bids on a contract.

The following companies all played a role in the Tillicum refit: Cowichan Hydraulics,

Cullen Diesel, the Fire Shop, Phoenix Sand Blasting, North Island Machine Works, Discovery Crane, Aztec Freight, Walco Industries, Jarl Towing and Al Grant Signs.

And those are just the businesses that worked on site.

There are other local companies that Ocean Pacific buys materials and supplies from as well.

“Aside from the contract is the sub-contracting spinoffs going into the community for supplies,” Kempling said. “There’s a full range of equipment required for a vessel which spins off to the local economy.”

And it doesn’t look like that will stop anytime soon.

Just as the Tillicum pulled away from the Ocean Pacific dock, in came Lindsay, an RCMP vessel, which will be in the ship yard until mid-February undergoing a refit.

The Black Duck, a 55-foot auxiliary vessel run by 19 Wing Comox’s marine section, arrived at Dec. 5 at Ocean Pacific where it is undergoing a damage assessment.

“This one was brought here as an emergency haul out because it was taking on water,” said Bruce Kempling, president of Ocean Pacific. “It’s here for an emergency assessment.”

The onsite evaluation is an official recording of the extent of the damage the boat sustained, what can be restored, salvaged or replaced, and how long it will take to repair

Holiday bustle can take a toll Does the voracious spirit of the holiday get you down? Have you fallen prey to the overkill yet?

Are you buried in decorations, frantically treading water stocking We say: Do your holiday pantry, and breathless yourself a favour from chasing the perfect present?

Do yourself a favour and take a and take a deep breath.

The proper approach to the breather Christmas season is not an exhausting marathon of preparation followed by an uncomfortable performance of forced tradition.

Christmas is not about putting your foot to the

accelerator in a mad dash to briefly touch on some arbitrary illusion of a reality that will never be yours.

And it’s not about turning off your self-control on spending only to awake in January to a pounding credit card hangover.

No, Christmas is about stepping away from the rat race and taking part in those things that are most important to you.

It’s about doing things for others – and with others – not because you have to, but because you want to.

It’s not about spectacle, it’s about intimacy.

By all means invest some extra effort in finding

that special gift. However, before you do, make sure you aren’t doing it because it will impress, but because it will be appreciated.

Go ahead and drag the kids to hunt for the perfect Christmas tree, or to cousin Gertrude’s house for fruitcake, or to that community choral show.

However, do it not because it is expected of you, but because it will help you to be connected.

In all this bustle, take a pause, dial it back and make some quiet time to connect with those people most important to you.

Because connection is the best present one can get.

Lots of misinformation

In response to your editorial “OUR VIEW: Provincial oversight missing in Cortes logging dispute” published Dec. 12.

There is a lot of misinformation swirling around regarding the protection of key public environmental values on private managed forest lands. The Private Forest Landowners Association (PFLA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the responsible stewardship of B.C.’s private forest lands. We appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight.

Enforcement of federal, provincial and local government regulations on private managed forest land is conducted by a long list of regulatory agencies, including: Environment Canada; Fisheries & Oceans Canada; Parks Canada; Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations; the Private Managed Forest Land Council and others.

Government maintains oversight and control by investigating and penalizing any regulatory non-compliance brought to their attention through inspections, reports, and forest practices audits. Any member of the public can contact the regulatory agency with an allegation of non-compliance and an investigation

Premier Clark ponders black ink, oil

Premier Christy Clark has completed the traditional round of yearend interviews with legislative press gallery reporters.

Here are excerpts from my discussion with her, dealing with the Enbridge oil pipeline proposal and the balanced budget her government has promised to present in February.

TF: On the Enbridge project, are you getting the answers you want on safety?

PCC: No, we’re not. We’ve set out our position. The five conditions need to be met, period.

[B.C.’s conditions are “world-class” land and marine spill prevention and response, meeting legal obligations

for aboriginal consultation, passing federal-provincial environmental assessment and a “fair share” of financial benefits.]

PCC: We need the oilpatch producers, the Alberta government and the federal government to come to the table.

We’ve been cross-examining Enbridge. We have not been getting any of the answers that we hoped to get. We haven’t gained a lot of comfort from that process. And none of the other conditions are even close to being met.

We are doing our own study of marine traffic. We want to understand the total number of ships that are out there plying our coast right

now. Because all of them have fuel in them, and some are cargo ships that are big enough to have enough [bunker] fuel as a mini-tanker would.

Part of this is trying to understand where our level of Coast Guard protection needs to be today, in order to protect us should there be a spill from the existing traffic.

TF: Balancing the budget: the finance ministry’s current projections call for an upturn in natural gas royalties in the coming year. With the current glut of gas, isn’t that kind of far-fetched?

PCC: It is going to be difficult to present a balanced budget, but I think, because we’re going to build in some [forecast] allowance, as we

always do, and because we’re going to be completely transparent about the assumptions that have led us there, and because we aren’t going to fiddle with any of the assumptions that we receive from the experts in the Ministry of Finance, it’s going to be quite clear that we have done it. We have come by a balanced budget honestly.

So when it comes to natural gas, you know that the assumption we use in the budget is based on a fairly complex formula that the Ministry of Finance has relied on for probably a decade now. We don’t fiddle with that.

They have a responsive regulatory process that swings into action and completes investigations much faster than the public land model.

Penalties for failing to meet environmental laws are financially significant. Owners have additional incentives to meet or exceed le gal requirements because a single noncompliance event can

jeopardise valuable third-party forest management certification.

This is detrimental to forest owners who rely on third-party certification to satisfy their customers’ demand for sustainably managed forest products.

This results-oriented regulatory approach leverages a dynamic unique to private land: owners are held fully responsible for their actions. In contrast, the multiple and overlapping licencees, authorizing agencies and users, found on public land, often make it

difficult to determine wh o ’s re s p o n s i bl e for what. This is also known as “the tragedy of the commons.”

In our view, it’s not a question of determining whether there’s sufficient government oversight on private land, but rather a matter of understanding a completely different model of ownership and responsibility.

Why would anyone suggest that we should be able to raise chickens in our backyards?

Fine if you have the acreage, but city backyards?

If you have lived next to a farm or on a farm, you will know that the rooster starts his morning round of noise at the crack of drawn. Do you know what that sounds like? It’s horrendous.

Not to mention the fact that they attract mice and rats, have fleas and the pens must be cleaned properly or you have the stench of it.

We have chicken farms in Black Creek. Is this not close enough to get fresh chicken?

Why would anyone want to listen to the noise of this in your backyard?

What a pleasant thought.

Our backyard is our oasis for reflection, puttering, reading and just enjoying the beauty of the work you have put in to it, not listening the squawking of chickens and roosters.

TF: If the B.C. Liberals form a government in May, will the election date be changed so we don’t have to have this discussion about questionable spring

election budgets?

PCC: It’s not part of the plan today, but I’m sure it’s a discussion we’ll have in the next four years. I know that people have talked about it. I’m open to it.

Food services are returning to the Campbell River Airport and the cafeteria will serve as a hands-on classroom for local students.

Students from the ACE-IT culinary program for high school students, as well as continuing education and special education students are all expected to help run the kitchen and serve hungry customers.

“Providing café services to airport clients has the potential to teach local students numerous work and life skills,” says Tom Longridge, School District 72 superintendent.

“This opportunity also allows the district to expand our vocational education opportunities.”

Timberline teacher Diana Camerin, and project manager, said for the special education students, the program will be a valuable life skills tool.

“It will be good for them to be in the kitchen and learn how to clean, how to make a cup of coffee, to check the temperature on the fridge and the oven,” Camerin says.

Her vision is to also have guest chefs from local restaurants featured in the cafeteria.

“We hope to have enough of a guest chef presence that people from the community would come for lunch,” Camerin says. “We want it to be a community thing.

“The project’s not just about us.”

She also hopes to include students from Robron Learning Centre as well as First Nations to make traditional bannock, complete with a story tag explaining the importance of the bread to

In the same vein, Camerin hopes to educate visitors that come through the airport.

Her vision is to have the students not only work in the cafeteria but also to meet and greet travellers and be the first point of contact.

“We want them to act as ambassadors,” Camerin says.

“We want them to meet and greet people as they come into the airport and get them whatever they need, whether it be a map or make a call and to talk to people about Campbell River and tell them what they like about it.

“While the students are out here they will be a point of contact, like a tourist information centre.”

When the students are not greeting the tourists, they will be slaving away in the kitchen.

Students will work one of two shifts – either 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.

Under an agreement between School District 72’s newly-formed Campbell River Educational Services Society non-profit and the city, students – who will all have their Food Safe requirements – will be tasked with coming up with a menu for the cafeteria, cooking and serving the food.

Susan Sinnott, chair of the Airport Authority, said the agreement will benefit both the students as well as travellers.

“The Campbell River Air por t Authority is very pleased with this agreement that will meet the popular request for café operations at the airport and provide opportunities for young people in our community to expand their skills and reach out to travellers to promote the many great things Campbell River has to offer,” Sinnott says. “We look forward to seeing this grow into a successful enterprise.”

And they remind everyone that most Christmas fires can be prevented.

Decorate for safety to reduce the risk of holiday fires: ■ Use flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.

■ Do not leave can-

dles bur ning unattended or within the reach of children.

■ Ensure that candles are located well away from combustible materials and never use candles to decorate a Christmas tree.

■ Remember to keep your Christmas tree watered to prevent it from drying out.

■ Christmas wrapping and decorations can be highly combustible and should be kept away from heat sources.

■ Discard gift wrap and boxes with the garbage or recycle where appropriate; do not burn them in the fireplace or woodstove.

■ Only use lights that have been tested and labeled by an approved testing laboratory.

■ Do not overload electrical circuits or extension cords.

■ Always turn Christ-

mas lights off before leaving home or going to sleep.

The Fire Department also urges everyone to practice fire safety in the kitchen during the festive season.

“Do not leave cooking food unattended, and if you are faced with a grease fire, put a lid on it!” says acting Fire Chief Ian Baikie. “And remember to always turn pot handles to the back of the stove when cooking, to avoid pots being pulled or knocked off.”

Another key to fire safety is an early warning.

“This holiday season, give the gift that saves lives: a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector. Ensure that your loved ones are protected year ‘round with working smoke alarms at work and at home,” Baikie adds.

Writer’s Studio continues with new sessions

The Campbell River Arts Council is continuing on with their new initiative for writers entitled the ‘Writer’s Studio’.

Looking for a community of fellow writers?

Opportunities to have your writing workshopped?

Discussions of literature from a writer’s point of view?

Prompts and direction to get you writing?

A challenge and a new path to explore?

A resource for living out the griefs and wonders of the writing life?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Writer’s Studio is for you.

Facilitated by poet and fiction writer Matt Rader and assisted by guest speakers, the Writers Studio, to be held at the Sybil Andrews Cottage in Willow Point, aims to create an ongoing venue to support writers.

Designed to respond to the needs of participating writers, the Writers Studio offers an opportunity to practice writing in a variety of disciplines including memoir, fiction, creative nonfic-

tion, poetry, drama, and essay.

The Studio may offer manuscript consultation, writing exercises, presentations on special topics, and group and individual reading lists; or it may be the venue for public readings, workshops on publishing, and experiments in multi-disciplinary art projects.

Writing is a process full of potentials and mysteries and likewise the Studio hopes to be a lived experience that adapts to those who participate.

The Winter Session of the Campbell River Writers Studio includes a few new elements. The session kicks off with a craft seminar lead by regular facilitator, Matt Rader.

The Craft Session is entitled Building Poems: How do poems come to be?

What strategies of composition do poets consciously and unconsciously employ?

How might we respond as readers and writers to these strategies?

In February, noted writer and teacher, Cornelia Hoogland takes over for two ses-

sions (Feb. 2 and 17).

Once again, participants can register for the whole series (six session for the price of five) or on a drop-in basis if space permits.

1. Writing the Unthinkable: doodling our way into writing. Based on Lynda Barry’s “non writing craft” techniques, Hoogland will lead participants in innovative and exploratory writing (and drawing) exercises. Bring lots of doodling paper.

2. Writing-AsCollage: Matt Rader Rearranges the World.

Hoogland will lead participants in a short exploration of a few conventions of collage in Rader’s poetry.

The main part of the evening will be workshopping participants’ writing.

Beginning on Sunday, Jan. 13, the Studio will continue on Sunday, Jan. 20; Saturday, Feb. 2; Sunday, Feb. 17; and Sundays March 3 and 17. All sessions will be from 1-4 p.m.

May 21, 1942-December 11, 2012 Della passed away peacefully at the New Horizon care home in Campbell River. She was born in Victoria, B.C., and then resided in Lake Cowichan, B.C.; from there she went to Ninette, MB to work at a sanitorium for TB. She met Henry, a farmer from Dunrea, MB, got married in 1962, lived on the farm until they retired in 1998 and move to Campbell River, B.C., where she took care of her mother, Stella Liebel, who died in 2002.

She leaves behind her husband, Henry; 2 daughters, Karen Beaupre from Brandon MB and Una Bryce (Lance) from Edmonton, AB, 2 sons, Byron Beaupre (Shauleen) from Killarney, MB and Kevin Beaupre (Thesa) from St. John, NB, 8 grandchildren: Drew, Alex, Rebecca, Gabrielle, James, Amanda, Jennefer, Dusty also 1 great grandchild, Reid.

She also leaves behind 2 brothers, Brien Liebel (Penny) and Calvin Liebel (Marilyne) of Campbell River. Also many nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

For those wishing, donations in Della’s memory made to the Brain Tumor Society or Cancer Society would be appreciated.

The family would like to thank the staff at the New Horizon care home for all the good care they have given looking after her and for their love and affection.

A service will be held on Monday, December 31, 2012 at 11:00a.m. at the Elk Falls Cremation and Reception Centre, Elk Falls Cemetery, Hwy 28 at General Hill. Father Shane Craig will ofďŹ ciate followed by entombment of her urn in the “Wall of Remembranceâ€? at the Elk Falls Crematorium. All are invited to remain for a reception in her honour.

He was just a guy who‌‌‌‌ formed his own one man construction company building over 100 houses in the Campbell River area one house at a time.

He was just a guy who‌‌‌‌ adored his two sons, John and Derek and was so proud of their career choices, John, a Fire¿ghter and Derek, a Police Of¿cer.

He was just a guy who‌‌‌‌ loved walking his beloved dog Bear in the Willow Point Trails and chatting to friends. This love of walking led him to complete the Great Walk 9 years in a row. David donated the pledge money to help establish the BC Guide Dogs and became a founding donor.

He was just a guy who‌‌‌‌ was a member of the Willow Point Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years and received the ¿re¿ghter of the year award during that time.

He was just a guy who‌‌‌‌ will be remembered by family and friends for his quirky sense of humour. He also had a childlike sense of humour which could send his six grandchildren into gales of laughter with their screams of `Bumpa!` as he was affectionately known to them.

Site preparation work for North Island Hospitals Project to begin shortly Two new hospitals for residents of northern Vancouver Island are on the horizon and the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) is seeking proposals from pre-qualified contractors to carry out site preparation work at the sites in Campbell River and Courtenay. “This is an exciting time for residents of the Comox Valley, Campbell River and Northern Vancouver Island,� said Don McRae, MLA Comox Valley. “Site preparation work is a milestone for this project as we head towards opening these stateof-the-art hospitals in 2017.�

The required work to prepare the two sites for eventual construction includes survey work, tree removal, soil erosion prevention, a landscape interface zone

and site fencing.

The Campbell River site also includes temporary parking, some building deconstruction to facilitate site access for ambulances and temporary space for Sunshine Wellness Centre staff and hospital project staff. “This site preparation work will help the eventual builder of the hospitals hit the ground running,� said Tom Sparrow, Chief Project Officer for the North Island Hospitals Project. “I look forward to seeing equipment at work on these sites.�

The contractors who will be selected to carry out the site preparation work will be selected from a list of service providers that was determined following a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process that took place in November.

Site preparation work on the Comox Valley site is expected to begin in February of next year, continuing through to the month of June 2013.

Preparation work on the Campbell River site is expected to begin in March with completion scheduled for November 2013.

A Request For Proposals for the actual construction and operation of the two hospitals will be issued early in 2013.

Construction of the new hospitals in Campbell River and the Comox Valley will begin in 2014, with completion slated for fall of 2017.

Foster parents association responds to Hamper Fund’s need Youngsters connected with the Campbell River Foster Parent Association unload a truckload of gifts at the Knights of Columbus Hamper Fund depot at Tyee Plaza. The toys are surplus from the Campbell River Foster Parent Association’s seventh annual Kids Only Christmas for children in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. This event provides an opportunity for children and teens to select gifts for members of their biological families as well as their foster families. In addition, they also collect non-perishable food items for the food bank. After reading in the Mirror that the Knights of Columbus were in dire need, the association immediately wanted to pay it forward and it was quickly agreed that the remaining new toys should be brought to the Hamper Fund.

Christmas came early for 60 students at Pinecrest Elementary School Friday morning.

After nearly two months of brainstorming, spending money, marketing and advertising, the group of Grade 4 and 5 students was ready to unveil and sell its products to the world.

Well, maybe not the whole world but the entire school community was there.

“They were so excited,” said teacher Tina Kuschel, who’s Grade 4/5 split class took par t in the school’s Young Entrepreneurs Showcase.

“It was like Christmas today.

“The kids love it.

They learn so much – ‘how am I going to make money?’ Customer service skills; marketing by making posters and sending them out.”

“They have a money plan so they’re learning math and they’re learning to be a good salesperson and business operator,” Ottosen said.

“It’s all about goal setting.”

And the products the students had up for sale also required some creativity on the part of the kids.

At one table, a couple of students were selling wallets made of different coloured duct tape – a popular

item among young kids, according to Ottosen.

Another girl had made her own lip balm while other students were selling soap, dog treats, stress balls made from balloons, clay magnets and home-made Christmas crackers for the dining room table.

Vice-Principal and Grade 5 teacher Lorill Vining said depending on the product, a student’s profit can range from $5 all the way up to $100. When she was teaching on

Quadra Island last year, students who participated in an Entrepreneur Fair there averaged a $20 profit.

For Pinecrest this is the sixth year students have participated in their own business fair, and it’s always a hit.

“It’s hands-on learning and they really love it,” Kuschel said.

“A lot of kids can be really creative with their products. Some are made at home and others are made at school.”

Holidays disrupt curbside pickup City of Campbell River residents who take their garbage and recyclables to the curb on Tuesdays are reminded that Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 pick-up will be moved to the following day.

There will be no other changes in days for waste collection, and regular collection resumes for Tuesdays after the holidays.

“There’s no change in collection days on any other day of the week. This change applies to the two Tuesdays only,” says Jennifer Peters, the city’s utilities manager.

“People scheduled for Wednesday pick-up following Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, during the holidays should be aware that collection times may vary from normal because Emterra is covering two routes those days.”

The tradition of extra garbage collection over the holidays will also continue this year.

“From Dec. 26 to Jan. 7, Emterra will accept extra trash for curbside collection to help people clear away after the holidays,” Peters adds.

No tags will be required for extra containers, but the weight limit still applies. Each container must weigh no more than 20 kg or 44

Wrap Gifts Differently.

Artist donates painting to MARS Mountainiare Avian Rescue Society (MARS) received a donation on Dec. 1 from artist Sharon Lennox, of an original oil painting on canvas of the organization’s ambassador barred owl, Shakespeare.

The painting is a rendering of one of their favourite and well known ambassadors and MARS was thrilled to receive it. At their recent event at Whyte’s Framing and Gallery in the Comox Valley, the painting was prominently displayed and another local artist fell in love with it, offering $1,200, which was happily accepted. Lennox has also painted another portrait of Shakespeare, which is for sale on her website through www.myartclub.com.

Lennox has lived on Vancouver Island since 1974 and resides in Royston. She works hard at developing her personal style on everything she paints; as a result she has won numerous awards.

Oil is her medium but she has been exploring acrylic paints, recently.

And, people who miss the opportunity to have their Christmas tree chipped (10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan.5 at the Sportsplex), can take it to the city’s yard waste drop-off centre, which is open year-round Friday to Tuesday (closed Wednesday and Thursday), 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

It is hard to believe that we are only a few days from Christmas. Another year is almost done.

Like you, I am often asking “Where did the time go?” The older I get, the faster time seems to go.

Sometimes I think I should be wearing a calendar on my wrist instead of a watch!

As the year comes to an end, it is a time to reflect on past accomplishments and all we are grateful for. On behalf of Daybreak Rotary, I would like to say that our relationship with you, the citizens of Campbell River, is something for which we are very grateful for. The Daybreak Rotary club’s ‘Student Of The Month’ program has had another successful year. Each month a different school has an opportunity to honour one of their students with being selected as that school’s ‘Student Of The Month’. Students are selected based on their citizenship, service and academic contributions. The student, their family members and a staff member from the school attend one of our meetings where the student is introduced to the club and we get to hear about why they were selected for this honour. The feedback Rotarians get from the students and schools is that this is a wonderful program for raising the importance of success in school and strengthens the connection between school and community, which is one of the goals of the School District’s Strategic Plan.
