recipients will continue to be leaders in their fields and will build on their significant contributions to B.C.’s justice system,” said Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond. “My congratulations to all appointees of this distinguished designation. The work you have done and continue to do is of great value to our province, our justice system, and for British Columbians.” Donald Noriyuki Kawano was appointed the title and currently practises at Rella & Paolini law firm in Cranbrook. He has been a distinguished member of the Law Society of B.C. for the past 34 years, serves as director and facilitator of the Cranbrook & District Restorative Justice Society, and is the East Kootenay representative of the B.C. branch of the Canadian Bar Association (CBABC). A distinguishing feature of Kawano’s legal practice is his involvement in the development of alternative legal tools, such as mediation, collaboration and restorative justice. A call for Queen’s counsel nominations from the public was made in August. All applications were reviewed by an advisory committee, which sought the views of the B.C. branch of the Canadian Bar Association and recommended deserving candidates to the Attorney General.

Recycling Tips That’s a Wrap

Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow bins in the East Kootenay and in the curbside recycling programs in Fernie and Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.

Recyclable: ü Paper based gift wrap ü Cards ü Envelopes ü Gift tags ü Tissue paper ü Cardboard boxes ü Brown shipping/packaging paper

Not Recyclable û Foil based wrapping paper û Envelopes or gift tags with foil lining û Bows and Ribbons

If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

To find the holiday hours at RDEK transfer stations and landfills, visit

www.rdek.bc.ca

Recycling 101 The yellow bins in the RDEK and curbside programs in Fernie and Invermere take the following: ü Mixed paper – including Christmas cards and envelopes (as long as they’re not foil) ü Aluminum and tin cans – please rinse well! No aluminum foil, pie plates, etc. Only cans are accepted ü Cardboard – all types; boxes must be flattened. Cardboard covered with wax, foil or soiled with grease or food waste cannot be recycled ü Plastics – Grocery bags (garbage must be removed from grocery bags) and plastics #1 - #6 (except Styrofoam)

Plastics NOT accepted:

û Styrofoam (even though it's marked as a #6) û Unmarked plastics – if it doesn’t have a number on it, it can’t go in the bin. Often the lids are made out of different plastics than the containers, so you have to check carefully û #7 plastics

What You Need to Know About Glass

No Styrofoam

Styrofoam is NOT recyclable in the East Kootenay, even though it is a type of #6. If it can't be reused, it's garbage.

Foiled Again

Please Keep it Clean Our yellow recycling bins are often on private property and it is so important that we keep them clean. Please put all recyclables in the bin. Over the holidays, the bins see a huge increase in volume. While our contactor will be working hard to empty the bins more frequently, sometimes they will be full. If you encounter a full bin, please look for another bin in the area or come back. Never leave recyclables on or around the bins. Thank you for helping us keep our recycling areas clean!

These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed.

Metal lids cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. Please make sure you remove the lids before putting glass containers in the recycling bin. Metal lids can be recycled for free at Columbia Recycle in Marysville.

Both alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. Drop off locations include:

The following items can be dropped off FREE OF CHARGE for recycling: üComputers – desktop and laptops üMonitors üKeyboards and Computer üMice üPrinters üTelevisions üFax Machines üScanners üDVD and VHS players üStereos and MP3 docking stations üRadios üDiscman, Walkman, MP3 players üEarphones üMicrophones üSpeakers üCable, satellite and PVR boxes üVehicle audio and video systems

On December 25th alone, over 30 million bags of garbage will be thrown out of Canadian households.

Batteries Included

Electronics recycling depots are located at the Cranbrook, Invermere and Fernie Bottle Depots. These depots are for small volumes only.

Products are divided into categories including: kitchen countertop, time measurement, weight measurement, garment care, air treatment, floor care and personal care.

That means only container glass that holds food and beverages. Some examples include: ü Jam jars ü Pickle jars Cheez whiz jars ü ü Olive oil jars ü Iced tea or wine bottles

Electronics are often a hot holiday gift item. Old electronics that are still in good working condition can be taken to an RDEK Reuse Centre; however, if they’re no longer working, they may be able to be recycled.

The Cranbrook and Fernie Depots (not Invermere) also accept more than 120 small electrical appliances, ranging in size from electric toothbrushes to countertop microwave ovens.

The glass recycling bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass ONLY.

The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins: û Dishes of any kind (clear drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes! û Shower doors, windshields û Lightbulbs û Picture frame glass û Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations)

Fluorescent Light Recycling The LightRecycle program accepts compact fluorescent and tube fluorescent light bulbs free of charge. The recycling program is for residentially generated lights only. Reuse Comes Before Recycle Over the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused. There are Reuse Centres at the Cranbrook, Kimberley, Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations and Columbia Valley Landfill. The Reuse Centres accept household items in good working condition. Everything in the Reuse Centres is available at no cost. Some examples of items that are accepted in the Reuse Centres include: ü Chairs ü Pictures ü Televisions ü Small dishes ü Light fixtures ü Tools Items that cannot be accepted include large appliances, tires, mattresses, automotive parts, scrap metal, wood and clothing.

If each person reused two feet of ribbon this Christmas it would save 61,000 kms of ribbon.

The Cranbrook Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is seeking nominations from the community for its 28th annual Woman of the Year award. Any woman in the East Kootenay region is eligible to receive the award based on the following criteria: her contributions to the education and/or advancement of women, and how she has inspired and enriched the lives around her by her endeavours. The nominee’s contributions and achievements may have taken place in the last year or over a period of time. Her efforts may have been part of paid employment, voluntary, or a combination of both. “Education” does not necessarily carry an academic meaning, but can be more widely interpreted to mean supporting and encouraging learning. The women who have been honoured by this award are very much admired and respected by those with whom they come into contact. Often they are “unsung heroines” of the community. Last year, it was Sister Nina Glinski CND, and in 2011, the Woman of the Year was shared by Vicky Dalton and the late Velma McKay. The club has honoured more than one woman before and did in 2011, as both women served on many of the same boards, did the same type of volunteer work and grass roots work to better improve our community for all, but especially women. Other woman of the year recipients include Sandy Zeznick, Janyce Brampton, Karin Penner, the late Linda Abbott, Jayne GarnerGalarneau, Leona Gatsby, Sophie Pierre, Mila Siguenza, Sheilah Moore, Janice Edwards, Ruby Sinclair, Susan Campbell, Flo Reid, Daphne Hayden, Pat Skordal, Anne Buckman, Pat Townshend, Jan Levang, Susan Selby, Anna Mae Gartside, Louise Stropky, Brenda Paul, Ann Rice, Mary Phillips, Elaine Fawcett, Cathy Fairclough and Mabel Chan. Recipients of this honour are selected from nominations submitted by the public. Nomina-

tion forms are available only at our web site www.cfuw-cranbrook.

com. The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 15, 2013 at noon. “The Club tries to arrange the Woman of the Year Award ceremony the same day as International Woman’s Day,”

The Perfect Christmas Gift

For the whole month of December, Sattva Training Centre offers a 10% discount on all new packages purchased. Now is a great occasion to get the perfect gift for the holidays. There are two starter packages available: The Training Package and The Holistic Lifestyle Coaching Aurélie Package. The training packWiedemann age includes a free consultation, a 1.5 hour assessment (postural analysis, core testing, primal patterns analysis and much more), the creation of a tailored exercise and stretching program (based on the assessment results), two 1-hour training sessions to go over your new exercise stretching programs and a 6 week progression plan. This package focuses on training only and ensures that you start the New Year with a structured workout plan. The Holistic Lifestyle Coaching Package is an extension of the training package, it has the exact same features but in addition to the workout aspect it also includes a nutrition and lifestyle component. It incorporates metabolic typing (the art of finding out what specific nutrients make your unique metabolism work optimally) and the creation of a holistic lifestyle coaching plan addressing aspects such as what you eat, when you eat, stress, sleep and wake cycles, digestion, fungus and parasites. This approach is better suited to people who are truly ready to change their lifestyle for the best. Everything is linked: what you eat, drink, think and feel can tremendously influence your physical performance. Consequently, in order for you to get optimal results with your workout, you need to address all these different aspects. As a trainer I can point you in the right direction and guide you all the way, but ultimately it is your passion and motivation that will bring you closer to your goal, so if you are ready for a change contact me for a free consultation at 250-464-4046 or e-mail me at sattvatraining@gmail.com If you were thinking about training sessions/packages as a Christmas gift, we do offer gift certificates as well. OBITUARY

Harry Richert Born: July 19, 1958 Birth place: Paraguay, South America It is with the deepest sadness that the Richert family announce the passing of Harry Richert, Harry peacefully passed away on Thursday December 13, 2012 at the age of 54 after losing his battle with Leukemia. Harry is survived by his wife Tammy, sons Clayton (Debbie), Travis, daughter Melissa, grandchildren Paige, Shelby, Skyler, Brittany (Richard), and Kristin (Eric), his mother Helen, brothers Peter (Christa), Gerry (Leya), Henry (Denelda), and many nieces and nephews. Harry was born in Paraguay South America and immigrated to Canada with his family in the early 1960s, with a short period in St Catherines Ontario, and then moving to Vancouver BC where he spent most of his childhood. After following in his fathers foot steps to become a welder at the age of 20. In Vancouver he met the love of his life Tammy, and they had 2 children. In 1987 Harry and family moved to Nelson BC and on to Cranbrook BC in 2004, where he could enjoy the passions in his life daily - his family, the outdoors and cars. Harry spent a lot of this time living his life to the fullest in the outdoors, camping, hunting, and fishing or working and racing cars at the local race tracks over the years. Harry always gave his time helping his family and others in his quiet non assuming way, putting them ahead of his own needs to make their lives more fulfilling. The constants with Harry is that he would be there to help, and he would be there to make you laugh to help put a smile on your face. He will be forever missed by everyone’s life he touched and all who knew him. Funeral to be held Thursday, December 20 at 2 pm at McPhersons Funeral Home.
