Judical council rules sept. 5 results invalid due to incorrect election notices sent to voters ADRiAn Macnair reporter

A judicial council has overturned the results of the Tsawwassen First Nation Sept. 5 election that saw 23-year-old Bryce Williams unseat long-time chief Kim Baird by a 78-69 vote.

The election results were appealed in October by Mike Baird, brother of Kim Baird, and Christina Shellard, her niece, due to the incorrect day of the week being included on some election notices.

“The Judicial Council has been very thorough in its analysis of this appeal and did a good job,” said Mike Baird in a press release. "I am pleased with the outcome and glad I persevered. It was a new process and not easy but the results ensure our members have access to a fair voting process."

The judicial council stated in its finding, issued Tuesday, that a notice for a new election must be called by the TFN Executive Council no later than Jan. 11.

TFN’s Elections Act states that the Executive Council must give at least 90 days of notice for a general election. In the interim, the judicial council states that the current government will continue until the election.

Kim Baird confirmed in a telephone interview that she will seek reelection, but said she wouldn't discuss her election plans until the new date is officially announced.

"I do plan on running again. I just want to say, though, that it's not been the easiest of decisions. It's been a challenging time for me and the community as well, so I'm happy the decision's made so there's a way forward such as it is, but I'll be even more relieved when this next process is complete."

Baird said she received encouragement to run for election, should the council call for a do-over.

"Needless to say there is some in the community that were hoping for this outcome and are hoping that I will run again.

And I suppose there are some that are the exact opposite."

Chief Williams said the news was disappointing but that he would continue "business as usual."

"It's just the process that we have to follow and obviously I'm going to be running again and I'm pretty confident that I'll be getting reelected," he said.

"There's been people wondering how I am and how I'm handling it, but I can't waste too much negative energy on this right now. I have other things I have to focus on, just the day-to-day operations and making sure we move forward with out government and our developments and our plans."

Williams said he's still "settling in" to the new job but people will see why he was elected to office and promised to prove why he belongs as chief of the Tsawwassen.

Mike Baird ran unsuccessfully in the Sept. 5 election for TFN legislative assembly and launched the appeal because he was concerned about the people who did not get to vote, according to Kim Baird.

"Others had considered appealing but found the process too challenging," she added.

The Judicial Council members sitting on the election appeal hearing were Paul Fraser QC (Queen's Council), professor Bruce MacDougall, and Leif Nordahl.

TFN has a constitution and election act which govern democratic elections, as well as appeals. The judicial council

holds the same legal authority as the B.C. Supreme Court.

"The whole design of the council and constitution was designed to be armslength to adjudicate decisions of government so it was important that we acquired really good people to sit on that [council]," said Kim Baird.

"It's challenging in that it's the very first decision it's had to make, the very first time the process has had to be used. If you look at the decision it's very thorough, it's very considered, so it demonstrates to me the processes are working the way it's supposed to."

According to figures released by TFN officials in September, 148 members voted out of an eligible 260, for a turnout of 57 per cent. TFN has a population of 439.

police search for Tsawwassen man missing for more than a week RobeRt Mangelsdorf editor

Delta Police are asking for the public's assistance to help track down an elderly tsawwassen man who has been missing for more than a week.

Dong Lee, 75, was last seen at his home in the 1200-block of Pacific Drive on Wednesday, Dec.

5, between 9 p.m. and midnight. the next morning, Lee and his wife's car, a green 2007 Volkswagen beetle bearing the b.C. license plate 680LGA, were both missing.

Lee's family became worried and went out looking for him for several hours, before contacting police to report him missing.

Police initially requested the public's assistance

in locating Lee on Dec. 6, but the search has so far proved fruitless.

Lee was last seen wearing his pajamas. He is described as an Asian male, five-foot-six, weighing 133 pounds, with black hair. Delta Police are concerned for Lee's well being, given his medical history of diabetes and heart trouble.

nothing to suggest Lee was abducted, and appears to have left on his own accord.

However, police have launched a criminal investigation into Lee's disappearance.

"We are continuing to investigate every lead that comes in," Feenan said.

Anyone who has seen Lee or knows of his whereabouts is asked to call 911.

Close to 35 tonnes of high-grade coal powder spilled into the waters off Roberts Bank early last Friday (Dec. 7) after a freighter collided with the Westshore Terminals coal port, raising concerns about the prospect of increased shipping along the B.C. coast.

The mishap occurred around 1 a.m. when the 180,000-tonne coal freighter Cape Apricot lost control and crashed into one of the coal conveyors, knocking 120 metres of the causeway into the ocean.

Denis Horgan, general manager of Westshore Terminals, said the salvage is going slowly because the broken causeway has to be secured and stabilized before teams can go in and remove materials.

Transportation Safety Board and Port Metro Vancouver are helping with the investigation into the crash.

Ke v i n Wa s h b ro o k , director of Voters Taking Action on Climate Change, is calling the incident coal's "Enbridge moment."

"It's the point where this continued drive to expand exports and the argument that, 'don't worry, we're the experts, we know what we're doing,' comes up against the realities of the world,

that accidents happen," he said.

Washbrook said people should be concerned about the coal spill occurring so close to an internationally significant bird habitat in Roberts Bank.

"Coal dust is toxic, it's full of heavy metals. It's harmful to humans, it's harmful to the ocean," he said.

However, Horgan disagrees, as the high-grade, low-sulfide coal powder that was spilled is practically inert.

"Coal is a naturally occurring mineral," he said. "It is not toxic. It is not harmful to marine life, bird life, or human life."

Horgan said there's an abundance of marine life around the terminal with thriving rock reefs filled with fish and crabs.

"I guess if coal is bad

for fish, nobody's told the fish."

Richard Swanston, a Tsawwassen resident and bird watcher, said this accident highlights the concerned of a huge oil spill in the Fraser Delta.

He said thousands of migratory birds would be affected by such a spill, such as Brant and snow geese, Western Grebe, cor morants, scoters, loons, and diving ducks.

Port Metro Vancouver vice president Duncan Wilson said the comparison isn't accurate because the safety standards are different between oil tankers and other ships.

For instance, crude oil t a n k e r s a re d o u b l e hulled, and come with two marine pilots. There's an escort tug at the bow, as well.

"A lot of redundancies are built in specifically

because we recognize the concern about a liquid bulk spill," he said.

He said coal is relatively inert and doesn't pose a danger to marine life and that the amount of coal in the water is tiny and most of it is still sitting in the conveyor belt and can be salvaged.

Westshore wasted no time to keep the coal moving, acquiring an engineer and contractor to fabricate and install the new conveyor system and road the day of the accident.

Productivity at Westshore is expected to drop by 50 per cent during reconstruction of the second berth. Horgan said there's no way to increase capacity on berth one since it already operates 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, shutting only for Christmas.

"It about creatures in the attic of a house, so it's pretty unlikely to happen," he says laughing.

Mills enjoys horror so much that he usually decorates his home into a haunted house on Halloween, though he was so busy this year shooting his new movie, The Changing of Ben Moore, that he didn't have time.

The Changing of Ben Moore delves into the realm of The Blair With Project and Paranormal Activity by using a handicam angle to put the viewer into the perspective of a person in the movie.

"I really get into those movies. They're becoming bigger now. That's why I made The Changing of Ben Moore," he says, adding it's quite a bit scarier than his first movie.

The latest script he's writing right now is called Question Mark and it's going to be filmed in Hope.

He will be shooting the sequel to They Came From the Attic in Ladner in 2013.

"My brother (Simon) works with me, too. He does the special effects and all the computer animation, so it's huge having him," he says.

"There's a really cool scene in The Changing of Ben Moore where a guy rips an arm off somebody because he's possessed and it's awesome."

Although Mills has his films distributed in the U.K., he prefers to shoot everything in B.C. "I love Ladner, I like shooting my movies here."

alloween comes just once a year, but for Ladner filmmaker Jason Mills, scaring people is a year-round job.

After being featured by South Delta Leader in 2011 for creating his debut film, They Came From the Attic, the B-movie horror flick has been picked up by Lion's Gate Entertainment in the United Kingdom.

York Entertainment took his film to various festivals Adrian and it got noticed MacNair b y t h e m a j o r movie syndication company. Unfortunately, it's not available here.

"The thing with low-budget movies is they're bigger in Europe," e x p l a i n s Mi l l s.

"Here, they're more Hollywood based."

But Lion's Gate is a gap in the door for Mills to try and push open for distribution in Canada.

It took 14 days to shoot They Came From the Attic, but years to finish in post-processing.

It was all shot locally, as well, using the heritage Kirkland House in Ladner and a farmhouse on Deas Island. He also used many local actors, such as Nicola Elbro from Ladner.

Perhaps appropriately, Mills got the idea of the film from a dream. He enjoys telling scary stories that are classically creepy but campy, fun and with a fair

Ladner residents petition against church redevelopment AdRiAn Macnair reporter

Ladner residents who are upset at a proposed townhouse development on the site of the old Baptist church at 47A and Delta Streets will have their chance to voice their opposition at an upcoming public hearing.

A 101-signature petition was submitted to council from residents who are concerned the proposed three-storey design is too modern and square-looking for the historic neighbourhood.

"Whenever any redevelopments have happened on this block, most have subdivided, but they've all gone into a heritage design," says resident Jocelyne Yhalomi.

Delta Street is a major roadway in Ladner with the Remembrance Day parade and it should retain its heritage look, she added.

"A modern building just doesn't belong in the village of Ladner."

Yhalomi said she con-

tacted the municipality about her concerns but was told she'd have to wait for the public hearing to come to council.

"There was comments made that there was going to be contrast with this building put up next to the church," said John Dean.

"But the problem is it's not just in contrast to the church, it's in contrast to all the buildings around it.

It'll stick out like the proverbial sore thumb."

Developer Steve Knoblauch, who refurbished the old Baptist church, said he wasn't surprised about the petition.

"I knew there were people that are fickle," he said. "Doesn't matter what you want to do anywhere or anything in Delta right now. People don't have the facts either."

Knoblauch said he's spent $1 million on the project so far to purchase the land and move the church and hasn't made anything in return. He raised the church up from its former position, to place it closer to 47A

Street, and poured it a new concrete foundation. Knoblauch has refurbished the church inside and out, including fixing the church tower, which he said was six inches out of plumb.

"We're just doing the inside stuff now, but I can't do much more until I get the rezoning," he said.

Lynne Webb, who's spearheaded the petition, spoke to Knoblauch during the summer to express her concerns. She said he told her he's done many of these types of developments in Seattle and Vancouver and he knows what he's doing.

According to the minutes from an Advisory Design Panel meeting held Aug. 23 at municipal hall, the committee praised the relocation of the heritage church and retention of a heritage asset. But it criticized the site layout and townhouse building design, saying it's in conflict with the heritage building.

"Modern design is supportable for the townhouses but the design

is fairly generic to this building typology," reads an excerpt. "It would be good to see a design more unique to this site and to Ladner."

Yhalomi said people would prefer a heritage design with a peaked roof, HardiePlank lap siding to give more definition, more green space between the curb and the building and not more than three stories, including a rooftop patio so it harmonizes with the Ladner Village Official Community Plan.

"We are concerned that it is too unrelated and out of step with the character of the existing neighbourhood and will negatively affect the ambiance and market values of our properties, some of which are adjacent," she said.

The public hearing takes place Monday, Dec. 17, at municipal hall, beginning at 5 p.m. The hearing was originally scheduled for Monday (Dec. 10), however, council ran out of time, resulting in it being rescheduled.

Dixon acclaimed as SD37 chair Rob Mangelsdorf editor

Trustee Laura Dixon was acclaimed as the new chair of the Delta Board of Education Tuesday night, taking over from Dale Saip, who spent the past four years at the position.

Dixon has served as a trustee on the board for the past four years, and admitted providing public education across three geographically, socially, and culturally distinct communities presents some challenges.

But in the end, families in Ladner, Tsawwassen, and North Delta all want the same thing.

"We all want good schools, and we all want our children to succeed," she said. "There's more that makes us similar than makes us different" Dixon said infrastructure and transportation issues loom largest for the district in the year ahead.

Due to changes to the provincial government's transportation allowance, the School District No. 37 may see fewer dollars for bussing.

And while the the district has seen school

enrollment fall for nearly a decade, that trend is starting to slow, and may soon reverse.

"It's starting to plateau," Dixon said. "But that brings its own challenges, as we try to find capacity in areas of development."

It's also not clear how school districts are going to pay for provincially mandated increases to the Teacher Pension Plan.

While her fellow trustees bring a diverse array of political ideologies to the table, Dixon said an atmosphere of mutual respect and the ability to put what's best for Delta students first and foremost allows the trustees to work together effectively.

Outgoing chair Saip said the district is in good hands with Dixon at the reins.

"I'm really happy for Laura... She's going to do a great job leading this district," he said.

Saip will serve as the board's vice-chair, while t r u s t e e Va l Wi n d s o r was named B.C. School Trustees' Association provincial council representative. Donna Burke was named the board's representative to the B.C. Public School Employers' Association.

Union backs off hospital job action ADRIAN MACNAIR REPORTER

The union representing health science professionals in B.C. has called off job action that cancelled or postponed some medical procedures at Delta Hospital last week, but workers remain without a contract with the province.

The Health Sciences Association of B.C. (HSABC) triggered a job action across the province last Thursday and Friday, despite the fact both sides have agreed to mediation.

The union's president said Monday (Dec. 10) that mediation is a voluntary agreement by both sides, but it doesn't prevent job action.

"We were making progress, and the government tabled a proposal that was clearly geared to provoking us, to escalate our job action to give the government an excuse to legislate and impose a contract," said Reid Johnson, president of the HSABC. The government is reportedly seeking a 1.4 per cent increase over two years with possible wage rollbacks, while the union is looking for a twoyear agreement with wage increases of four per cent and no clawbacks on benefits. The union's contract expired in March and their members have not had a raise since April 2009.

The union represents roughly 17,000 health sciences workers, including diagnostic, clinical, and rehab therapists and technicians.

Veteran labour mediator Vince Ready spokes to both sides this week, convincing the union to back off its job action.

Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid issued a press release Sunday (Dec. 9) expressing relief.

"I've worked side-byside with these health care professionals and have a huge respect for them and their work, but there is an appropriate process in place to deal with these issues and that is at the bargaining table," she said.

MacDiarmid deemed the offer made to the union "fair" and within the government's Cooperative Gains Mandate enacted for public sector union contracts which expire after Dec. 31, 2011.

But Johnson said although their workers have the second highest average of post secondary education in health care next to doctors, they aren't compensated commensurately.

"We know in this contract we're not going to make up the difference between us and Ontario, Alberta, or Nova Scotia.

We just want the same as what the other public sector unions have already settled for."

Johnson said almost 40 branches of health science professionals in B.C. are behind the rest of the country in terms of compensation. He said there's also the lure of the private sector in Canada and the U.S., which creates the danger of brain drain.

Jini Aroon fell in love with cooking while growing up in her native Sri Lanka, surrounded by bold flavours and aromas.

There she learned to cook simply, and healthily, and hopes to share her lessons with her Canadian neighbours.

In addition to running the Ladner Community Kitchen, Aroon also teaches cooking through School District No. 37's continuing education program.

Her "Healthilicious" course teaches people that even though their lives may be busy, there's always enough time to eat deli-

cious, healthy food.

"People are so busy that they think they don't have time to eat well," Aroon says. "Here in North America, we aren't eating enough fruits and vegetables, and that's not a good example for our children."

With just a stove, a blender and 10 minutes of time, Aroon says there's no limits to the healthy food one can prepare.

Her cooking trues to steer people away from foods with added fats, sugars, and salt.

But variety is the spice of life, she says.

Progress comes at a price The completion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (expected in December, 2013) will bring with it increased trade and further cement Delta's growing position as an economic hub in the Lower Mainland.

Port facilities will be easier to access, goods will be cheaper and easier to ship, and fewer dollars will be wasted while stuck idling in traffic.

Development of the Tilbury and Sunbury industrial areas will not only provide local jobs, but ease the tax burden on residential ratepayers.

There is no doubt the new route is badly needed.

However, the economic benefit the road brings comes at a price.

The road travels through some of the most important and sensitive wetland areas in the Lower Mainland.

While no infrastructure project, building, or development can be built without some negative consequences to the environment, the provincial government has done much to ensure the damage is as little as possible.

Crews are planting native vegetation along the road, installing wildlife habitat, and migration corridors.

The road itself forms a barrier around Burns Bog, helping to prevent excessive water drainage.

But it is not enough to merely mitigate the environmental impact of a project.

If we are to be responsible stewards of the environment, we must seek to improve its condition.

The SFPR fails in this regard.

Given construction on the project began prior to the completion of its environmental assessment, it is clear that protecting the sensitive ecology of Burns Bog and the surrounding area is nothing but an afterthought.

Progress comes at a price.

But how long can nature afford it?

A delicate balance

the South Fraser perimeter road skirts one of the most sensitive ecological areas in the Lower Mainland. But is enough being done to protect wetlands impacted by the project?

T

he dusty road running beside the ancient Burns peat bog might just be the last great frontier of road construction in Metro Vancouver.

The largely rural wetlands are teeming with wildlife and waterfowl, but just metres away lies the black asphalt of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR).

The $1 billion, 40-km highway project runs along the south side of the Fraser River, extending from Highway 17 in southwest Delta to 176th Street in Surrey, with connections to Highway 1, 91, 99 and to TransLink's Golden Ears Bridge.

The SFPR's Surrey connection opened earlier this month, while South Delta's extension of Highway 17 is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

Given the new road's proximity to sensitive wildlife areas, environmental protection was chief concern, says senior project manager Ron

Lepage.

"The project went through vigorous environmental screening," he says. "We listened to stakeholder concerns right from the get-go and tried to address them as best we could."

That's why the province hired environmental coordinator Lori Leach, to ensure the project meets with minimum impact to ecology.

Leach realized just how close they were building to Mother Nature last year while working on a section of the project near River Road.

There she spotted a doe trying to keep a coyote at bay from her newborn calf. She quickly dialed conservation authorities to come and help.

In areas where the SFPR merges with existing road infrastructure, Leach says they created green spaces and habitat for local wildlife.

"We saw an opportunity to create some environmental enhancement features," she explains. Her team planted cat tails, native shrubs and trees, and implemented standing "snags," which are dead trees that act as important habitat for aquatic birds and mammals.

There are even nesting boxes for bats, roosting nests for water fowl, and the pond and tributaries are fish-bearing.

However, local environmentalist Susan Jones dismisses the project's ecological protection efforts as nothing more than "window dressing."

"They do it right by the road where everybody can see a little pond with ducks," says Jones. "It pulls at the heart strings, so to speak.

But really, they did some major damage to farmland, bog and ravine habitat."

Jones says the SFPR runs through federal lands that is habitat to species-at-risk such as the streambank lupine plant and the Pacific water shrew.

"As far as I'm concerned it was all lip service to the environment," she says."They haven't done what they said they were going to do."

Part of the land expropriated for the highway from local farmer and historian Warren Nottingham was a migration habitat for sandhill cranes.

"The year before the construction started there were somewhere around 40," he says of the cranes in his field on the western edge of Burns Bog. "It was probably the largest number of sandhill cranes that we in the neighborhood had seen in one field."

The next year the cranes changed their migration route, though whether it had to do with construction is unknown.

"It seems as though that the activity on the highway spooked them," said Nottingham, adding some cranes have returned, but in far smaller numbers.

The new highway's proximity to Burns Bog has also caused concern among the scientific advisory panel tasked with analyzing SFPR's impact on the bog's drainage and hydrology.

John Jeglum, an expert on peatland biology, found that regardless of where the SFPR is put it would have major consequences to wildlife in the 40-square-km peat bog, which was recently designated a "Wetland of International Importance" under the Ramsar Convention.

604.943.1515 "A route within or immediately adjacent to the mixed conifer forest on the Bog’s western edge will have the greatest impacts on ecological integrity, through ecosystem conversion and negative edge effects," Jeglum stated in his findings.

Jones says the road was put in the wrong place, particularly in placing it so close to Burns Bog. "The preferred route was the widening of River Road. It would have been easier and cheaper and it could have had a service road for these local businesses."

But Lepage says the work they've done on the highway is actually helpful to keep the bog from draining and that some of the softest soil and deepest peat was in Surrey, not in Delta.

Lepage also points to a new pump station they built in Tilbury with the Corporation of Delta. When fully operational, it will supply fresh water to more than 6,000 hectares of farmland, especially important in the southern-most regions of Tsawwassen where farmland has a higher salt content.

To mitigate the loss of 90 hectares of farmland by SFPR construction, the new pump station in Tilbury will move three cubic metres of water per second, which LePage says will improve intake levels and irrigation.

"So, at the very least, there's no loss in agricultural output, and that's from supplying fresh water to areas where they don't get enough."

Whenever the SFPR went through farmland, the topsoil was salvaged, and the adjacent fields were laser leveled. LePage says the SFPR worked with the Agricultural Land Commission to minimize impacts to local farming.

As well, part of the SFPR runs through five former Delta landfills. The construction team has capped the landfills, created a leachate collection system to keep it from draining into the local environment, and installed a methane gas extraction system to prevent greenhouse gasses from leaking into the atmosphere.

Mayor Lois Jackson received the 2012 Brownfielder of the Year award from the Canadian Urban Institute in September, in honour of her work to revitalize the landfills along River Road in Tilbury.

One of the properties was owned by the Corpora-

tion of Delta, inherited through a tax sale years ago.

Jackson said it would have cost $20 million for the municipality to clean the site up on its own. Instead, they sold the land to a developer for $1 who then cleaned up the site, turning it into a prime industrial property.

"We are going to be receiving very valuable tax dollars from all these properties as we go into the future," says Jackson.

A Nov. 16 municipal report prepared by Delta's environmental manager found ongoing monitoring has not demonstrated any negative impacts on the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area by the SFPR or fill sites.

Leach says they were mindful of the wildlife around Burns Bog, which is why they created numerous wildlife crossings in underground culverts for both large animals and smaller ones native to the area.

But Jones isn't buying it. She says the culverts were simply a cheaper option than bridges.

"It's destructive to a lot of habitat and against the whole environmental process and the mitigation compensation they had originally promised," she contends.

Nottingham tends to agree. He says the environmental assessment held up the SFPR in South Delta by a year and a half, but the final agreement was pushed through.

"For the hopes and aspirations of the people doing the environmental stuff, it got watered down quite significantly," he says.

In essence, the final agreement was written "after the fact," as the SFPR received environmental approval six months before the assessment was completed.

Despite that fact, Nottingham says he believes the province has taken care and consideration to monitor wildlife activity and nesting habitat.

Ultimately, he says the road had to go somewhere.

"We've been expecting this for the past 30 years, almost 40 years," says Nottingham. "The position is close to where they were always looking, it was just a matter of whether they were ever going to get around to doing it." adrian@southdeltaleader.com

Renown marine artist immortalizes Ladner AdriAn MacNair reporter

One of Canada's most famous marine artists has completed a historical painting of Port Guichon in Ladner, depicting how the waterway appeared more than a century ago.

Tsawwassen's John Horton, best known for his historical paintings of maritime vessels and coastal towns, took between three weeks and a month from the beginning sketches to the finished product.

The scene's content and history was rigorously researched by Horton in order to be as accurate as possible, with the exception of it all taking place under moonlight.

"There's a bit more romance about the moonlight scene," he says, chuckling.

Horton has painted many seascape portraits that include the moonlight motif.

Mark Sakai of the Delta Museum and Archives helped with the research he needed to properly complete the painting.

It all began with a 1903 photograph of a ferry at the fisherman's cannery moored to the Port Guichon Hotel. That ferry used to travel from Victoria to Steveston, in Richmond, before continuing on to Ladner and New Westminster.

"Ladner played an important part in the history of the Fraser River," explains Horton, who looked at historical maps of the area and then cross-referenced them with modern Google Maps.

Overlaying the two, one can still see the railway running to the ferry wharf.

The painting shows the train stopped at the railway office next to the ferry. The church can be seen in the background, along with the church, the Guichon family home and the hotel.

There's also a square-rigged barque loading up goods from the cannery, a tug boat towing logs to the sawmill, and Ladner landmarks in the distance.

The last two boats depict the sternwheeler ferry, which would have taken people up and down the Fraser River, and in the foreground a local farmer brings sacks of potatoes in a rowboat.

The piece itself will be for sale, but there will be prints on canvas available with some of the proceeds going to help the Delta museum as a fundraiser.

Horton has lived in Tsawwassen for five years, where he moved to build his "dream studio" after building his reputation in Steveston.

Aside from being commissioned by the Royal Canadian Navy to commemorate events and ships, he's gone overseas to do war sketches and paintings.

"I still go with the Navy," he says. "I went to the Arabian Gulf chasing Al-Qaeda with a paint brush."

SDSS Interact club volunteers embrace spirit of giving

urple pinkies, shelter boxes, pizza sales and clothing drives – a group of South Delta Secondary students have embraced the spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy at a younger age than most. At last count, 40 students are involved in the school's Interact Club, a service group sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen.

"We have a very strong leadership culture at our school that has developed," sponsor teacher Laurine Dane says, noting there are so many student leadership clubs at SDSS that a monthly meeting has been set

up for representatives from each of the groups.

"We're making sure we're all creating our niches but supporting each other in all of our endeavors."

Students involved in the Interact Club have taken on projects that are local, national and international in scope, from shoreline clean-ups to supporting a resource centre in Uganda. This holiday season they are fundraising for ShelterBox Canada, an organization that delivers tents and other equipment to families who have been displaced or are homeless after natural and manmade disasters. The goal is to raise $1,000 to purchase one Shel-

terbox by selling solar lights and holding Friday pizza sales, sponsored by Panago. Once that goal is achieved, the pizza sales will continue in support of one of the club's ongoing projects, fundraising for the Tekera Resource Centre in Uganda. The centre includes a health clinic with dental and counseling services; a primary school with 400 students; a community and cooperative farm with a "work to earn" program; and a women's craft club with profits from craft sales going to micro-loans.

Get your gifts wrapped, help fight cancer The Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association and Canadian Cancer Society are teaming up to fight cancer this Christmas at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall.

Volunteers will be on hand throughout the Christmas shopping season to wrap gifts for a donation to help fund cancer research and treatment.

“We were so pleased to be approached by the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association and the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall about taking on the gift wrap station this year, but we were concerned about finding enough volunteers,” said Canadian Cancer Society representative Nicola Romaniuk. "We asked local Tsawwassen businesses to step up and help us out and we were so thrilled to have so many community minded businesses come forward to help us with this fundraiser.”

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national communitybased organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. Gift wrappers will be on hand from Dec. 19 to Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Dec. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The two organizers completed their fourth annual Deltassist Christmas toy drive charity music event on Dec. 1, and it was the most popular yet.

"I started doing a number figure but there was too much," said Boychuk of the estimated generosity of the community.

Aside from the toys they received from patrons, Boychuk said they received $1,100 in cash donations, which they promptly spent on more toys for needy children this Christmas.

The whole idea for a Christmas toy drive concert began four years ago when local teacher and friend "Guitar Marty" suggested that Doucette, who's been playing with Boychuk for three decades, do something nice for kids.

Doucette, originally from Montreal, is known for his 1977 single

Ladner kids rally for pajama drive

By Adrian MacNair Christmas is an exciting time for children eager to receive presents from Santa, but the children at Port Guichon Elementary in Ladner are finding that giving feels good, too.

Molly Millward, 9, started a pajama collection drive at her school in order to collect a goal of 500 pairs of new pajamas for Deltassist's Christmas hamper program, which will end up under the Christmas trees of needy children.

"I like doing it because it's traditional for our family to get pajamas and I would be sad if somebody didn't get any on Christmas," says Molly, decked out in a bedazzling pink pair of jammies.

Molly's cousin started a similar drive in Surrey two years ago and it inspired her to do the same. She recruited a couple of friends along the way, including Madison and Tiah from her class.

In Tiah's household the tradition is to get a new pair of pajamas on Christmas Eve to wear to bed before Santa comes. The thought of a child going to bed without new snugglies on Dec. 24 doesn't sit well with Tiah.

The three wrote a pajama drive script and then took turns reading it over the public announcement system at their school to motivate other kids to get involved. They now have 150 pairs of donated new PJs, with more on the way every day.

The school was scheduled to have a pajama day for the entire student body on Friday (Nov. 30) which Molly hopes will push the donation numbers even higher.

"I'm proud they're getting involved in doing something in their community," says Tiah's mom

Lynne Tarumoto. "It just makes you feel good that the kids realize there's more to Christmas than getting."

Molly's mom Lesley Millward says even her four-year-old son has gotten into the spirit, using his toy karaoke machine to make announcements about the pajama drive.

SDSS students embrace spirit of giving From P13 In the new year the Interact Club has plans for a local project, hosting its third annual clothing drive at SDSS. Organized as a competition between classrooms, last year the drive collected 1,200 pounds of clothing for Freshwave Ministries, which takes it to the poor and homeless in Greater Vancouver.

"There was really a buy-in from our student body that these things – clothing, purses, blankets or shoes – there are people who live in our community who are benefitting

from these things . . . It really brought it home for them that poverty is local," Dane says.

The club was also responsible for the display of white crosses and poppies at the entrance to Tsawwassen in the week leading up to Remembrance Day. And in late October they raised money for Rotary's PolioPlus program. The campaign involved dying 1,000 students' pinkies purple to raise awareness about the need for polio vaccination in many developing countries, where children's pinkies are often dyed purple after be-

ing immunized to prevent a double dosage and to ensure no child is missed.

The $300 collected was then matched by The Rotary Foundation Canada and the federal government, tripling their donation.

Other efforts are sure to come, even if it's simply volunteering in their hometown.

"Any of the community pieces Rotary is doing, we're always invited to participate," Dane says.

Jingle to benefit Little House Society

By Adrian MacNair You can get into the Jingle spirit this Saturday (Dec. 15) while supporting a good cause, as singer Tony Barton and the Delta Youth Orchestra perform a Christmas concert at the Genesis Theatre.

Barton, a former member of the Blue Man Group, brings a SinatraBublé swing style of old time Christmas crooning to Ladner.

"It has a dash of theatrical flair, because I come from a theatrical background," says Barton, a Point Roberts resident who originally hails from the Windy City. "So, there's a lot of surprises for the audience."

Barton will only drop hints about the surprises, but says the name of the concert—Jingle—sums it up.

"For me, that's what the holiday season is all about and it's all in us,

that spirit," he says.

That spirit goes beyond just merry-making. The concert will provide $2 of each ticket to the Little House Society, an outreach centre committed to reducing and preventing drug and alcohol abuse.

Jingle will donate an extra $1 for each ticket holder who shows up in a Santa hat.

The idea even inspired a donor to match the Santa hat donations dollar for dollar. Barton says the donor wanted to remain anonymous in the hopes others would make a similar offer.

Barton met Jim Stimson, president of the Little House Society, several years ago at the benefit concert for Irene Thomas Hospice.

"I hope this will become an annual event for Ladner. This is something that is really homegrown,"

says Stimson, adding the performers, the charity, and the venue is all local.

Barton coordinated with maestro Steven Robb to have the Delta Youth Orchestra perform in the concert, featuring a six-string, five-horn, and four rhythm ensemble. Tracy Neff, Whitney Saip, and Jenny McLaren will provide the vocals.

"People ask me why I'm doing this. I think I'm supposed to do it," says Barton. "I'm just about sharing with people and entertaining and having a good time."

Jingle will be held at the Genesis Theatre in Ladner (5005 45th Ave.) on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Volunteers work in three-person teams to offer holiday party-goers a safe ride home in their own car. One volunteer drives the party-goer's vehicle, while a second volunteer rides shotgun and navigates.

The third volunteer follows in their own vehicle to pick up the driver and the navigator up at their destination.

The service is provided free of charge, although donations are appreciated.

"I thought, what a great idea," says Holmes. "Where the heck was this when I was a lad?"

When the program came to Delta 10 years ago, Holmes jumped at the

chance to help out.

For Holmes, every year he volunteers he is reminded why the Operation Red Nose program is so needed.

"The first year I volunteered we came across a car accident, caused by a drunk driver," he says. "It really hit home. If the driver had called us, no one would have been hurt."

Last year, Holmes was driving a man home from a local pub when they encountered a police road block.

"Thanks guys, you just saved me $7,000," the man told him.

This year, Operation Red Nose volunteers will be offering rides on Friday and Saturday nights for the rest of the month, as well as New Year's Eve. Last year, the Delta chapter of Operation Red Nose gave 644 rides, logging more than 20,000 km.

Holmes says he is encouraged to

see a younger crowd using Operation Red Nose's services in recent years.

"They don't take it as being wimpy to phone for help anymore, and that's great," he says.

While Holmes says he has seen it all in his 10 years of driving for Operation Red Nose, he won't divulge any details, as the service is confidential.

"We offer our clients total discretion," he says. "We don't talk about who we pick up. They deserve that."

Local donations go to support Delta Gymnastics, and the program is always looking for volunteers to help out.

"Even if you can only do one night, it's always valued," he says.

It's never too late to donate The Ladner Community Kitchen hosted its fourth annual Community Christmas Dinner on Monday (Dec. 10), but it's never to late to donate.

Jini Aroon is the coordinator of the Ladner Community Kitchen, and along with the South Delta Food Bank, works to make sure no one in this community goes hungry during the Christmas season, or any other time of year.

Aroon says she thankful for the community support the event has received.

"Our police chief, Jim Cessford, has been a big supporter of this annual event from the inception in December 2009," she said. "We are entirely funded by commu-

nity donations which we receive during this season, and we appreciate everyone's contributions."

Dozens of Deltans partook in the dinner Monday night, and for many without close family, it was a chance to come together during the holidays.

The Christmas season can be the busiest time of year for the food bank, and donations are always needed, says Aroon. This year saw record donations from the Delta Hospital Auxiliary's Christmas luncheon, but there is always a need for more.

The local food bank serves more than 100 needy families in the South Delta area, while the

Ladner Community Kitchen offers hot soup and sandwiches every Wednesday when they come in to pick up their rations.

Donations in cheque form should be made to the South Delta Food Bank, and are eligible for tax receipts. You can also donate your Save-On More points at the Ladner store to charity No. 102.

All donations of nonperishable food items can be dropped off at the Ladner Christian church office from Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Grocery store gift cards are also appreciated.

Corp. of Delta employees raise record amount for United Way The Corporation of Delta’s employees raised a record-breaking $69,182 for the United Way of the Lower Mainland – an increase of more than $9,000 from the previous year.

“I am continually over whelmed by the generosity of Delta staff,” said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. “Every year Delta’s United Way Committee coordinates a phenomenal workplace campaign, and every year more and more staff donate to this worthy cause.”

The United Way Committee set a new

direction for the 2012 campaign: instead of focusing on a dollar amount, the Committee focused on a participation goal. The end result was a 50 per cent increase in participation via payroll deductions from the previous year.

Proceeds raised from the campaign will be used to support prevention-based initiatives that address poverty, bullying and seniors’ i s o l a t i o n a c ro s s t h e Lower Mainland.

“It is because of the generosity of volunteers and donors such as

those at the Corporation of Delta that we are able to make a measurable difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in the Lower Mainland,” said Jennifer Marshall, a United Way Resource Development Associate.

“We truly couldn’t do the work that we do without

the amazing support of Delta’s employees. We are extremely grateful and want to congratulate the municipality on an incredibly successful campaign.”

This is the seventh consecutive year that Delta has exceeded its fundraising goal.

Get border alerts via email The Canada Border Services Agency is introducing a new e-mail border alert service to notify travelers when unexpected events cause a significant disruption to normal border services. When a service disruption occurs at any land border ports of entry, a Border Alert will be issued to subscribers, identifying the impacted port and recommending alternate ports of entry.

CBSA will also notify subscribers when normal operations have resumed.

Border Alerts will not be issued in response to normal increases in traffic volumes or planned events, such as construction. "[CBSA] operates in an

environment of constant new challenges," said spokesperson Faith St. John. "It means being prepared for anything - most critically in the case of unexpected events such as an accident, a flood, earthquake, power/network outage, or health and safety issues that could disrupt normal border services."

Last year, border services officers processed 1,449,694 travelers entering Canada at the Boundary Bay Port of Entry, according to St. John. So far this year, they have processed 1,550,813 travelers.

The Delta Ice Hawks are back on top of the Pacific Junior Hockey League standings after their 6-1 drubbing of the visiting Ridge Meadows Flames, Tuesday night.

The Ice Hawks controlled the game from start to finish, firing 46 shots on Flames goalie Wesley McLeod.

Grange Gordon had the game of his junior B career, scoring a pair of goals and an assist to earn the game's first star honours.

Gordon opened the scoring for Delta in the first period with an even-strength goal, before Brent Chreptyk made it 2-0 for the home team.

Sean Pesut got the Flames on the board late in the second period, but the Ice Hawks responded less than a minute later, as Aaron Merrick scored on the power play

to restore the two-goal lead.

The third period was all Ice Hawks, as Merrick scored twice more to complete the hat trick, while Gordon scored his second of the night.

Merrick finished with second star honours after scoring even-strength, on the power play, and short-handed.

Defenseman David Rudin was named third star.

Ice Hawks' goalie Alexander Ahnert stopped 23 of 24 shots he faced.

With the win, the Ice Hawks improve to 19-62, for 40 points and a share of the PJHL lead, along with the red hot Abbotsford Pilots.

The Ice Hawks travel to the Fraser Valley to take on the Pilots tonight (Friday), in a game that will decide the top team in the league. The Delta Ice Hawks return home to the Ladner Leisure Centre this Tuesday, Dec. 18, to take on the Port Moody Panthers. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Delta Tri training gets under way With the Delta Triathlon slated for April 20, fitness fanatics are already in training mode for the big race.

But there's still plenty of time the novice athlete to prepare.

The South Delta Triathlon Club and the Corporation of Delta recently opened registration for their training clinics. The clinic is nine weeks in length, and includes the TriBC annual membership and a registered spot in the 2013 Delta Triathlon.

Participants work with trained coaches

over nine weeks to improve running, biking and swimming skills, along with learning the art of transitions and basic bike maintenance.

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia has announced the finalists for this year’s Georgie Awards, honouring the best in the residential construction industry.

This will be the 21st annual awards, which reward builders, renovators, marketers and sales representatives. The awards are known across Canada for recognizing excellence and innovation in B.C. “A Georgie Award is recognized as an industry stamp of quality.
