A Christmas Story

pen, a journal, a shiny hair clip, a comb, socks and an assortment of other pink and pretty things are what Buelah is packing in a shoe box. But this isn’t an ordinary shoe box and Buelah isn’t an ordinary 15 year old girl. Almost ten years ago, Buelah Paw Say was living in Mae Ra Moe, a refugee camp on the Thai/Burmese border. She was one of the wave of Karen refugees that arrived in Langley in 2008. Because of religious persecution the Karen people fled across the jungles of Burma to Thailand. Over 140,000 refugees made it to Thailand, where nine refugee camps were set up. The refugees were legally confined to these camps, and not permitted to find work or travel outside its perimeters. It’s hard to imagine being able to buy and sell merchandise and food because technically no one is allowed to have money but where there’s a will, there’s a way and practically anything can be had on the black market. Life in the camp was hard and for Buelah and her brothers and sisters it was the only life they knew. But one year at Christmas time when Buelah was six something magical happened. At a special assembly in the camp all the children received a small brightly coloured box filled with toys, school supplies and personal hygiene items. Because of the generosity of people in the developed world, hundreds of thousands of special shoe boxes are filled and sent to children in poor and war-torn countries. Operation Christmas Child is project developed by Samaritans’ Purse, a Christian organization run by Franklin Graham. Its shoe boxes have traveled around the world using every imaginable form of transportation, trucks, boats and even camels. To date, Operation Christmas Child has collected and distributed over 94 million shoe box gifts worldwide. They are given to children regardless of gender, race, religion, or age. For many, this is the first gift they have ever received and such was the case for Buelah. It was a gift, she told me, that she will never forget. This is her story. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Paying it forward. Buelah Say packs a shoebox of gifts for Operation Christmas Child, an organization that she herself received a gift from as a six-year-old refugee. On the next page is a photograph of the refugee camp where Buelah and her family found safety before coming to Canada.

A Christmas Story

delight there was a stack of bright red and green boxes on display. She remembered these boxes! She had received one and now she knew where they came from. The box also contained a photograph of a young girl and a hand printed note in a foreign language wishing her a Merry Christmas. At ten years old, Buelah didn’t understand the concept of an international program so she looked around the church to see if the girl was there. The Karen people are incredibly generous. With their meager resources they are eager to give back. Packing an Operation Christmas Child box has become one of their Christmas traditions. Many families take home at least one box, pack it and then promptly return it the following Sunday. Buelah and her family also participate and they have been doing so for 4 years. When Buelah arrived in Langley she had no English skills and no idea of Canadian culture. Since she has been here she has had to learn English and adjust to life in Canada while at the same time keeping up her studies. This year she is in grade 9 at Langley Senior Secondary. In past years, Beulah’s parents have helped her to buy the items to put in the box. Last year she worked in a greenhouse and was able to pack a box herself. This year Buelah worked very hard and landed a job at McDonalds. She wants to go to school to become a nurse and this job is a way of saving money. But she understands the concept of ‘giving back’ so this year she is again packing a box using her own earnings. Her English skills are improving daily but when she was asked how receiving such a gift made her feel, she

It may be a bit late this year to participate, but watch for the boxes next year in November. If that seems too far off and you want to do something this year, you can still pack a box ‘online’. Go to www.samaritanspurse.ca for details.

struggled a bit to articulate. “The idea of giving a present to someone you don’t know is strange to me but I was very surprised and happy to receive a gift. It was so nice of the little girl from far away to give me a present. I think she must have been very kind.”

You never know who you may be helping. Someday that person may help someone else in return. It’s like ‘paying it forward’ and that is the greatest gift of all. Just ask Buelah.

I asked her what she would say to someone who has never packed an Operation Christmas Child box and she said. “When I was in Thailand, I was so amazed that someone thought of me. You can do the very same thing to make another child’s Christmas very special and they will remember it all of their life. I know I do.”

Sausage Party

here’s big competition for home-based parties that deal with soaps and candles, clothes and the kitchen: Sausage making parties. And in Langley, there’s only one place where you will find all you need to make sausages, excluding the innuendos. It’s Stuffers Supply Co., located at 22958 Fraser Hwy., about 100 feet behind the first building. As Stuffers is unique, it draws customers from all over the Lower Mainland. Most are wholesalers — butchers and processors — but hunters find all they need at Stuffers. And, with the increasing popularity of sausage-making parties in private homes, that component of the business is growing. In fact, some of Stuffers’ customers travel from as far away as 100 Mile House for its supplies, which range from industrial-sized meat grinders to casings, spices, sausage stuffers, knives and knife sharpeners. All the equipment is high-grade equipment, said Debra Degianni, whose husband, Reno, owns Stuffers with his business partner, Bill Leathem. The casings the store carries come in both natural and artificial, and it’s at Stuffers that you will find pink salt, a hard-to-find salt that is added to the curing process (and gives ham its distinctive colour) to prevent botulism. One happy customer stumbled on to Stuffers after a local restaurant shared the secret for the perfectly flavoured braised red cabbage: juniper berries. Stuffers supplies the restaurant with these as well as dozens of others seasonings,

and cures such as pink salt. They carry whole black, white and pink peppercorns, whole coriander and cumin, among others. There are many Christmas spices at Stuffers, too. They have sausage-making packages to suit customers’ needs. “We’ve designed packages that are small enough so that people can make 10 pounds of sausages and not have any waste,” Degianni said. “We have everything in one packages and all they have to add is their meat.” Making your own sausages is a bit time consuming, buy anyone can do it, she added. And with a group of friends, “You can make them in one afternoon.” As many people like to add a binder such as toasted wheat crumbs to their meat, this can be a challenge for people on a gluten-free diet. Stuffers accommodates them, too, by selling gluten-free mixes. Reno Degianni and Leathem started the business 16 years ago to fill a niche for the wholesale market. Now, with more people showing an interest in making their own sausages at home, Stuffers plans to offer courses in the New Year. Visit www.stuffers.com. ~ Natasha Jones Stuffers carries everything you need to make your own sausage. Photo: Miranda Gathercole

I’M GIVING IN TO TEMPTATION. I don’t care if people judge me — I’m having seconds. I’m using spices and seasoning from Well Seasoned on my turkey this year, and I know it’s going to be delicious. Finally, a good excuse to undo my pants!

The Season of Charity

W

hat to buy? What to buy? By now maybe you’re stumped! What is the best gift for the person who has everything? What can you get your good friend who’s downsizing? The office party is on the horizon and your new coworkers interests and taste are still a mystery. Before panic sets in consider giving a really meaningful gift. Consider making a donation to a local charity. Here’s a few ideas for your Christmas list.

Langley Lodge - Gold For Dignity Many seniors who require specialized chronic care due to an underlying medical condition rely on Langley Lodge. Not government run, the Langley Lodge is supported by a charitable, non-profit organization called the Langley Care Society. This year the Langley Lodge is launching an exciting new pilot project called Gold For Dignity. This program is designed to help you de-clutter your jewelry box and assist the residents of the Langley Lodge at same time. Many of us may have at least one piece of gold jewelry that has been collecting dust for a reason or a season. It may be a ring from an old flame or a single earring or two that have lost their partners. By tidying and de-cluttering your jewelry box your unwanted or outdated treasures will be put to work helping the Pastoral Care, Music Therapy and Horticultural therapy programs. This initiative will run until December 31st. It’s easy to participate,

just bring your items to Langley Lodge (5451 - 204 street) and they’ll do the rest. Call Fundraising Director Patrick Matiowski today at 604-532-4200 for more information. There are other ways to help too. In the main lobby there’s a Christmas Tree on display that is decorated with Tribute cards. Donations can be made in honor of people who live at Langley Lodge or who have passed away and a decoration with their name on it will be hung on the tree. In return you’ll receive a tax receipt. You can also make a contribution in the gift recipient’s name to the Langley Care Foundation. The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Langley Care Society. Your friend or co-worker will get a card advising them that a donation has been made in their name. The Salvation Army - Texting benefits the Gateway of Hope this year! Every year throughout the Christmas season, armies of volunteers have ‘manned’ the familiar kettles to raise funds to help the poor and needy. The Salvation Army provides hampers for seniors, single people and adult children who aren’t eligible through the Langley Christmas Bureau. This year, in addition to donating at one of the kettles, The Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope will also benefit from texting a donation. Text number CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

There is a need for volunteers to help fill 2500+ shifts throughout Langley. The Campaign is running until December 24th. Call Troy Gaglardi at 604-514-7375 for more information. The Langley Christmas Bureau Still Time to Help the Teens! The Langley Christmas Bureau is entering its thirty-ninth year of operation. Each year, the number of families applying for assistance increase, and each year the Langley Community steps up to help out! Consider sponsoring a family, making a cash donation or contributing to the toy depot with a new unwrapped toy. Many donations to the Langley Christmas Bureau are for the 12 and under set and unfortunately teenagers are forgotten. This is a challenge the Langley Christmas Bureau faces every year. Gift certificates in general are a good choice especially for electronic stores. The Christmas Bureau is located at 20550 Fraser Highway. For ideas or to contribute, call the Langley Christmas Bureau at 604530-3001 or check them out online at www.langleychristmasbureau.com I WILL BRING CHANGE. - A New Charity in Langley Lacey Forward is a woman on a mission. She’s the chair of a new charity called I Will Bring Change. This charity focuses on combating human trafficking. When asked why she named her charity I Will Bring Change she said. “Because every day women and children all over the world are bought and sold with pocket change.” The charity has three attributes. They are Community, Education and Awareness. “But unless you act upon them they are useless attributes” said Lacey. “That is why I organize ‘sweat shop’ nights on a regular basis. I was able to partner with Marjolein the founder of Sweetpiece Jewelry to make a special charm bracelet.”

The bracelet is handmade and is made up of Copper and Swarovski crystal. There is a maple leaf to symbolize those who are exploited on Canadian ground and the bracelets are finished with a coin to symbolize the people who are bought and sold for pocket change. The links that hold the charms are reminders of the slave trade.

This year, why not give a gift that will warm the heart, improve lives and keep on giving all year long. Support a local charity for a more meaningful and brighter Christmas.

Using word of mouth or Facebook Lacey brings people together (Community) to make a charm bracelet that is symbolic (Education) of human trafficking and how to defeat it(Awareness). Up to 30 people participate and at the end of the evening a lovely charm bracelet is produced.

After you’ve made the bracelet and received an education about this world problem the next step is personal. Will you participate? If your answer is yes, there are lots of ways to help. You can bring change to this international problem. Contact Lacey at info@Iwillbringchange.com for information or “Like” her page on Facebook.

Ladders and Lights

I

was up on my aluminum ladder between storms and football games on the weekend and the winter breeze carried back some memories of long boys from the Zone 1 Volunteer Fire Department put up the Christmas lights in the downtown in November and took them down in February. It always seemed to be planned on Grey Cup day or Super Bowl week-end. The strings of lights were pretty basic, colored 60watt bulbs attached to cable with a hook on each end and a plug. The tricky part was that the eyes for those hooks were set in the wooden telephone poles about thirty feet off the ground, and that’s where we came in. We would pick up the strings of lights from storage; each one supposedly tagged with the right string for the right location and take the trucks with the forty foot ladders out to Fraser Highway. The senior guys would get to attach the cable ends on one side first. Then the rookies would carry the other end up, stretching the cable as they climbed. Once you were up you had to wrap your leg around the rungs in a leg lock, grab the pole with one arm and pull for all your might to set the hook. As you were straining in this precarious position, you were encouraged from down below: “C’mon ya wimp, do I have to come up there and do that?” Do you want me to call my wife to come give you hand?” “I thought we hired men to do this job?” Then after you got it hooked, you went up one more rung and plugged it in. It was more dangerous than any fire we ever fought! But it always looked great when it was done and it wasn’t until much later that I realized if you organized something on Grey Cup day, everyone worked a little faster to get the job done. From a training perspective, there were many times down the road that I found myself leg locked onto a CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

Ladders and Lights ladder directing a high pressure hose stream down onto a fire knowing I wasn’t a wimp and that I didn’t need someone to come up and do the job for me.

Adidas Outlet 20202 66th Ave. Langley, BC 604-539-2494

Putting up those lights was pretty basic training, but as the streets got wider and the City purchased a bucket truck, our Christmas light crew was phased out and no one was ever injured, at least physically. A lot of those men from those Sunday mornings are gone now, but their humor and wisdom lingers on, those were great Sundays. The exercise also taught us a little bit about our organization. There were some who never showed up for those mornings, and participation is a good measure of the success of your organization. Some never flip the burgers or pound the nails but they show up in their best bib and tucker for the Christmas party. Some never run for office or attend the business meetings but they sure know how the association should be run. The same applies for your community. Some work tirelessly to make a difference and put in more than they take out. At this time of year there are endless opportunities to make a difference to individuals or the community at large and it builds a healthier place to live. Be a contributor to your organization or your community; don’t be afraid to take a risk. Climb to the top of the ladder, pull for all you are worth, disregard the cat calls from below. I can assure you when you get the job done, it feels pretty good. ~ Jim McGregor

Christmas and the Flowers that Make it Festive

hen you walk into the garden centres, flower shops and grocery stores during the month of December you will see a plethora of poinsettias. Their festive, bright red leaves are traditionally the most popular colour for the holiday season. For the more adventurous consumer there are the fun varieties like Christmas Rose and Carousel, with wonderful curly and crinkly leaves, or speckled varieties like Red Glitter, Ice Punch and Ice Crystals. It’s not hard to add a jolly feel by placing the plants throughout your home. There are some shoppers out there who prefer not to be so traditional. They prefer to break out of the mold and celebrate the season with something a little more unusual. For those of you who fall into this category, this is the list for you. What follows is a list of other plants considered perfect for Christmas. The tall and graceful amaryllis plant is an elegant addition to your Christmas décor. Often found in mixed planters it will make a statement as it graces your table. The huge flowers resemble the angels’ trumpets and herald in your holiday guests. Mostly available in red at this time of year, they also come in other colours like white, pink and orange, speckled, striped or solid. The Christmas cactus is another fun plant to bring home. With its low water requirements it is low maintenance and will easily survive and flower again next year. The flowers resemble Christmas ornaments hanging from the ends of the leaves. Rosemary is regaining popularity as a Christmas plant. The old stories say the clothes of the Baby Jesus were hung on a rosemary bush to dry. Whatever the reason, the fragrant bush is a wonderful addition to the deliCONTINUED ON PAGE 23

Christmas and the Flowers that Make it Festive cious smells already coming from your home. For those with only a little space you can find rosemary or even lavender trimmed in the shape of a Christmas tree, perfectly sized in a one gallon pot. Hellebores or Christmas Rose produces white flowers that often turn pink or deep salmon-pink as they age. The legend of the Christmas Rose is that a young shepherdess was watching her sheep when a group of wise men and shepherds passed by bearing gifts for the newborn baby Jesus. The young girl wept because she had no gift and an angel wiped away the snow where her tears had fallen. A beautiful white flower with pink edges appeared, the Christmas Rose, a gift for her to present. Mistletoe and Holly are not traditionally sold as live plants, but are often used to accessorize the decorating scheme. Before the Victorian era, holly tree was considered the same as a Christmas tree. The concept is not far-fetched as they are both a species of evergreen. Mistletoe will likely never lose its popularity as its presence is an excuse for kissing who ever should be standing beneath it with you. Not everyone knows the little stories behind the flowers popular at Christmastime. But these little tales add a little more spice to an already delightful season. And here is one more legend for you: the myth of the poisonous poinsettia. The two-year-old child of a US army officer was found dead, coincidentally lying near a poinsettia. The rumour started that he had died of poinsettia poisoning, but this has never been proven. In fact, after eating a poinsettia a child would likely have a stomach ache, but no serious harm would come of it. The same is true for your pets. And no one would get past eating one leaf: they taste terrible! ~ By: Fiona Jansen, Milner Gardens

Fresh Trees and Proper Lights Keep Christmas Safe

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year, but accidents can happen - even at Christmastime. “To keep your family and home safe, there are a few precautions that should be taken when decorating your house and putting up the tree this holiday season,” said Krista Barton, Public Fire and Life Safety Educator for the Township of Langley. Get off to a safe start by choosing a Christmas tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. “Older, dry trees can be a potential fire hazard,” said Barton, who suggests cutting two inches from the base of the trunk before placing the tree in a stand, to ensure it soaks up water. Be sure to add water to the stand every day. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces or candles, and that it is not blocking any exits. “When lighting the tree, use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory,” Barton said, “and note that some lights are for indoor or outdoor use only.” Replace any strings of lights with worn or

broken cords or loose bulb connections. Don’t connect more than three strands of mini string sets and check manufacturer’s instructions for the number of LED strands that can be connected. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree and always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. Get rid of the tree soon after Christmas, before it gets too dry. “Dried out trees are fire hazards and should not be left in the house or garage, or placed against the home,” Barton said. Trees can be recycled at various tree chipping events being held throughout the community, including one that will put on by members of Township of Langley Firefighters Local 4550 at the Otter Co-op on Saturday, January 5, 9am to 3pm. Proceeds from the tree chipping will benefit the BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Fund. See upcoming Township Pages for more details. For more information, contact Krista Barton, Public Fire and Life Safety Educator, at 604.888.1215 orkbarton@tol.ca.

Jellybean Park Recommends Top Toys for Christmas Give Your Child An Edge With Educational Toys They Won’t Put Down

P

arents and grandparents, it’s time to start compiling those Christmas shopping lists! When choosing toys for the little ones this year, there are plenty of options that can provide great learning benefits. They’ll enhance your child’s early development without skimping on the fun factor. Karen Valle is the educational director for Jellybean Park early learning centres in Metrotown and Langley, where the concept of education-based play is fundamental. “At Jellybean Park, we use teaching materials that are hands-on and lots of fun,” Karen explains. “Aside from being great gifts that your child will love, all our toy suggestions are also teaching aids. Children will develop their five senses and their language skills while learning to interact better with adults and other children.”

Here are some toys recommended by Jellybean Park for Christmas giving: • LeapFrog Bilingual Magnetic Zoo (Ages 1-3) Children match magnetic tiles to learn colours and animal sounds and facts, and celebrate correct matches with fun or silly songs. Available at Toys “R” Us. • Pockets of Learning Three Little Pigs / Goldilocks and the Three Bears Playsets (Ages 2 and up) Bring these classic stories to life with an interactive pop-up book and read-along CD, then set your child loose with the matching playset. Your LeapFrog Bilingual Magnetic Zoo child will love the beds that are ‘too hard, too soft and just right’ or trying to ‘blow the house down’. Available from pocketsoflearning. com. • Plan Toys Barn (Ages 3 and up) Made from recycled wood using child-safe dyes and glues. The Plan Toys barn encourages imaginative play, eye-hand coordination, dexterity, problem-solving, and communication. Available from learningtoys.ca • eeBoo Matching Games (Ages 5 and up) With themes ranging from nursery rhymes to animals, matching games help improve your child’s spatial memory, focus, and attention to detail. Fun for the whole family! Available from eeBoo.com eeBoo Matching Game - Circus

• Scientific Explorer Tasty Science Kit (Ages 6 and up) Filled with recipes, ingredients, even a test tube laboratory, the Tasty Science Kit provides a hands-on lesson in what makes cakes rise, candies crystal-

Tour the Lights this Holiday Season!

• The Christmas display is up once again at 27708 Signal Court in Aldergrove. There are 24,000 lights, including a 20-foot mega tree and some new display pieces this year. • Parallel Acres (South Langley) corner of 232 Street and 0 Avenue, will light their Christmas display until Dec. 31, from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Closed Christmas Day. All welcome, but no dogs please. • Cops for Cancer Christmas Fundraiser at the Cannons, 20102 42 Ave.The lights are on once again until Jan. 1, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. On Dec. 22 from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. they will host a special event, including a silent auction, face painting and pie eating contest along with an opportunity to meet Tour de Valley members. There will also be hotdogs, hot chocolate and more. Donations may be made online at www.copsforcancerbc.ca/ tourdevalley/christmasaholicslights. Last year the Cannons’ efforts raised about $1,700 and they are looking to surpass that this Christmas. • Langley’s Christmas in Williams Park runs until Dec. 15 at 238 Street and 68 Avenue. From 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., each evening drive through the park to

see lights and displays. (Mini buses can enter the park, but large tour buses cannot). On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., walk in for entertainment, face painting, pony rides, food, hot drinks, horse and carriage rides, and visits with Santa and Mr. Claus. Free shuttle service is available from parking areas. The nights are free but donations are gratefully accepted. • Not far from Williams Park, the front yard of the Farmers’ residence, 23924 68 Ave., is once again the site of a festive Christmas display, which includes music, a decorated barn and garage and 40 lighted trees. In addition, there are more than 100 lighted figures and 30,000-plus lights. The display covers about an acre and includes a Santa and reindeer which appear to be floating on air. • 19934 38 Ave. This display features 12,000 bulbs and will be lit up weeknights from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to midnight on weekends until Dec. 31. • 19646 49 Ave. in Langley City from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Jan. 7. • The Kirlik family welcomes everyone to come and have a look at thier

Christmas light display at 4448 216 St. in Murrayville. Lights will be on from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. nightly until Jan. 1. In addition to the displays that have been submitted, The Times’ spies have found a few others around town that they say are worth a look: • 900 block of 200 Street (across from South Carvolth school) • 20034 and 20013 37A Ave. • 19989 45A Ave. • 20175 48 Ave. What about your display? Is your yard so decked out with decorations that you can’t see the lawn? Is your house visible from space? Or maybe you’ve just made a little extra effort to put up a nice holiday display this year and would like people to come on by and have a look. Why not drop us a line with your name, address, hours and dates the display will be lit and any other pertinent information.

Const. Craig Van Herk takes a break from riding his bike to show Carissa Baker, Chelsey Edgecombe and Tiahna Cannon a card trick. Van Herk is pedaling on his bike every Friday night from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at the Cannon home, 201202 42 Ave. Photo: Miranda Gathercole Email to entertainment@langleytimes. com or drop the information off at our office, 20258 Fraser Hwy. No phone calls please. Lists will be published throughout December as space permits and will be kept up to date on our website at langleytimes.com.
