Space is limited to highlight all the services offered so you are encouraged to contact the individual organizations for more information.

Message from the Mayor Welcome to the 2013 Winter/Spring Leisure Guide. The New Year and spring time both bring opportunities to make changes in your life and to start anew. If youâ€™re looking for ways to make healthy changes in your lifestyle, youâ€™ve picked up the perfect resource to help you get started. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor recreational activities, Chilliwack offers a multitude of opportunities to get active and live healthy. This guide is the result of the partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No.33, who assist in the support of the Community School Associations, of which two new ones have been formed: the Rosedale Traditional Community School and the Greendale Elementary Community School. Each contributor to the Winter Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of the residents of our community. The City of Chilliwack has a facility to meet all your needs: evergreen hall

Located at 9291 Corbould Street, the Evergreen Hall is a prime location to host gatherings of various types and sizes. The Cheam Room is a full size gymnasium, which can host 450 people in a banquet setting and as many as 650 people in a theatre style setting. The Minto Room has a capacity to host 20 –25 people and is ideal for small gatherings. The Slesse Room has a capacity to host up to 70 people if a mid size setting is what you are seeking.

The Landing Sports Centre

There is more to this facility than meets the eye. Located at 45530 Spadina Avenue, the Landing Sports Centre’s main floor has the capacity to host gatherings for as many as 1870 people. The Loft area provides space large enough for 250 people in a banquet setting and up to 300 people in a theatre setting. If a small meeting room

is what you need, the Clover Room has a meeting capacity of 30. If you enjoy playing tennis year round, the Landing Sports Centre can accommodate you with the four indoor tennis courts housed in the main floor and drop-in tennis is available from October 1st through to March 31st of each year.

Chilliwack Parks, recreation & Culture Information exhibition Field

Exhibition field is one of the flagstone outdoor facilities located at what is referred to as the Landing site. Formerly a ¼ mile horse racing track, the area was renovated into one of the top grass facilities in the lower mainland. The facility consists of a CFL size football field, a smaller practice area and a covered stadium containing approximately 2000 seats. Commonly known as the “Home of the Huskers”, Exhibition Field has also been the venue of choice for Vancouver Whitecaps games, as well as other high caliber soccer competitions, field hockey and rugby.

Townsend Park

The Artificial Turf Field, constructed at the East end of Townsend Park, has some exciting features: • It can sustain up to 6x the play of natural turf • It doesn’t require rest periods for turf to heal • It reduces the burden on other natural fields • Maintenance costs are similar to premier natural turf • New turf technologies incorporate crumb rubber to reduce injuries • This field is only closed when snow accumulates on it. Otherwise it stays open in all weather conditions

Twin rinks

Located at 5725 Tyson Road, the Twin Rinks ice arena was founded in 1982. It is the premier location for public skating, drop-in hockey as well as organized ice sports such as Minor Hockey, Seniors Recreational Hockey, Figure Skating and Speed Skating. If you are planning a special event such as a birthday party, or corporate event, Twin Rinks can accommodate you with skate rentals and meeting rooms for office festivities.

Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture

Parks & Trails Webster Skate Park

Along with the construction of the new library at Watson Glen Park, came the closing of the old Watson Glen Skatepark. In order to keep riders active in the Sardis area, the City of Chilliwack created a new skateboard park in the Webster block. Opening early in the fall of 2012 the completed facility provides challenges for all ages, skill levels and types of users from skateboarders, BMX’ers, scooter riders to inline skating. Key features in this park include spine transfers, handrails, ramps, banked ramps, stair sets, and a rare centre dish feature. All City of Chilliwack skate parks are unsupervised facilities and the use of protective equipment is strongly recommended. The facility is inspected on a daily basis and is open from Dawn until Dusk.

Waterfowl in Parks

Please do not feed the ducks and geese. While it is enjoyable to feed the waterfowl, it is also detrimental to them and to our environment. Feeding waterfowl: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to extremely large concentrations of birds, Overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting

A Dog-Off Leash Parks are an ideal place where owners can take their dogs to run freely without a leash. However off-leash does not mean “out of control”. Pet Owners must ensure that their pets are controlled and not violent or aggressive. Pet owners must be onsite for the duration and must have a leash immediately available. In order to ensure the safety of you and your pet, when visiting the Dog Park: • Please avoid bringing toys and food to the off-leash area when other dogs are present; • Please pick up after your dog and fill in any holes your dog digs to ensure a clean and safe play area; • A valid license and current vaccination for your dog is required

The Fraser river: Its Spirit and Place

For 10,000 years the Fraser River has pierced through the centre of our Province before reaching the Fraser Valley and a slow meandering journey to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its life, the river offered food and material resources that enabled the Stó:lō, (the People of the River), to thrive and expand in a series of villages located along the river. The section that flows by Chilliwack is called the gravel reach. Here the river supports 30 species

of fish, and provides rich habitats for resident and migrating birds and a host of mammal species. In the last century the river began to change. Flood control measures and developments have altered the landscape and are threatening the health of the river. This exhibit looks at the history of the Fraser River and why, today, it is important to understand the processes that created the river and have sustained it for so many centuries. As housing and development demands increase, communities have been forced to reconsider acceptable uses of land. When this occurs, we must ask ourselves what Heritage Tours: histories are erased – what new histories occur as a result of abandoning past ways of The Chilliwack Museum and Archives offers downtown walking tours. Shannon Bettles and Barb Bettles Generations in Colour

In this show, a mother-daughter duo explore colour, expression and design over two mediums – quilting and acrylic painting. Barbara, a masterful quilter, pushes the boundaries of traditional quilting methods to create unique fabric artworks. Daughter Shannon explores Fraser Valley and other landscapes in a colourful and expressive acrylic painting style. Opening Reception April 20, 12:00 – 2:00

Strong Start

WorkBC Employment Services Centre (Sardis)

All services are free. The integrated services and supports include: • Job search resources, including computer workstations, public telephones, fax machine, photocopy services. • Personal employment planning to help build a plan that will identify what clients need to find a job, and lay out the steps to help clients get there. • Workshops and training for people interested in finding out more about getting ready for work and finding a job. • Specialized services that can help clients with unique situations.

The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Connect with Nature

Come out and discover this peaceful place, enjoy a walk and watch for the wide variety of wildlife including one of the largest breeding colonies of Great Blue Herons in B.C. Hundreds of herons will be back to nest in early March. There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a beautiful wetland located along the Vedder River at the south end of Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale. The programs and services at this City of Chilliwack site are managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society.

Swimming Lesson Descriptions Parent & Tot (6 – 35 months) In this program we introduce your child to water, build their water confidence, and educate you as the parent on pertinent water safety. Our program consists of singing songs and playing interactive games, through fun group activities we will appeal to your child’s curiosity and desire for play, while we increase their comfort in and under the water. In addition, we will promote balance and movement; and begin swim skill acquisition. Preschool 1 – 2 (Ages 3 – 5) The focus is on helping your child to become comfortable and safe in the water. Water movement and assisted floats are the skills that are covered. Level two includes full-body submerging. Class size is no more than 4 students. Preschool 3 – 5 (Ages 3 – 5) The focus is on floats, glides, rollovers, underwater swims, sit, dives and developmental breaststroke. If the swimmers are ready we’ll even teach them to front crawl for up to 10 meters! Class size is no more than 4 students. Swim Kids 1 – 2 (Ages 6+) This entry level program provides an orientation to safety around the water and pool area. Floats and glides with kick are introduced. Children build their endurance using flutter kick with assisted glides. Swim Kids 3 – 5 (Ages 6+) These levels build the child’s skill in front and back crawl, diving, sculling, and whip kick. They are taught to be water safe by understanding their own limits and learning boating skills. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and dolphin kick, up to a 50-metre swim.

Swim Kids 6 – 7 Front and back crawl continue to be refined. Elementary backstroke and whip kick on the front are introduced. Ice safety, choking, and elementary rescue of others with throwing assists are taught. Endurance is built to a 150-metre swim. Swim Kids 8 – 10 Breaststroke, butterfly and scissor kick are introduced, and all strokes continue to be refined. Surface dives, rescues from ice, and rescue breathing are taught. They learn about fitness and making wise choices. Endurance is built using dolphin kick, butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim. Private Swimming Lessons Enjoy exclusive one on one instruction! Youth in the Weight Room (13 – 14 years) Youth must attend and complete a Weight Room orientation in order to use the weight room. Upon completion you will receive a Gym Use Teen Graduate Card which validates using the equipment safely. The card must be presented each time you use the weight room unattended by an adult. Cost is $5. Available at Cheam and Chilliwack Landing.

A new fun-filled hour class learning to bounce to music while seated on a stability ball. As you bounce you will learn balance and motion by traveling forward and back & side to side. First 40 minutes is cardio and last 20 minutes is abs and stretching using the ball.

Cardio Light

This is a non-impact cardio class for seniors or beginners to fitness. In this friendly atmosphere, participate in 40 minutes of cardio, followed by 20 minutes of strength and flexibility training, all to great music.

Cardio Remix Express

A 45 minute mix of intense cardio and choreography that can be adapted to all fitness levels.

Cardio & Sculpt Light

Join in for a beginner cardio class using a variety of formats to elevate your heart rate and burn calories. Follow up with a strength and conditioning segment to burn calories for fat loss while toning and tightening muscles. This is a great overall workout!

Step, Strength & Stability

This is a class that features 45 min (approx.) of high energy, choreographed step, followed by 35 min (approx.) strength and conditioning, and ending with a 10 min. full-body stretch. Burn calories, gain strength and stamina in the 1.5 hour class.

Trim & Tone

This is a strength and conditioning class designed to improve balance and core while toning and tightening the muscles from head to toe.

Curling is a fun, affordable and social sport that is suitable for all ages and abilities. New curlers are made very welcome. A wide variety of daytime and evening leagues are available throughout the week. Space is still available in certain leagues for the second half of the season. Ice rental

Ice rental is available for groups of all sizes. From a small group of friends to a large event, we would love to host you. Corporate golf tournaments are a hit during the Summer, why not see how much fun your employees will have throwing rocks up and down the ice? We can supply from 1-6 sheets of ice, with or without bar service. Curling experience is not necessary!

Facility rental

The Chilliwack Curling Club has banquet facilities which are perfect for weddings, Christmas parties or any kind of celebration. The bar, which overlooks the rink, is fully stocked and can accommodate up to 168 people. Catering can be arranged for full food service.

Whether you are looking for group training via our popular clinics or are interested in more personal instruction provided by a private lesson, we have an option that will meet your needs.

Formed in 1952, the Chilliwack Curling Club is a full-service curling facility with six regulation curling sheets and a fully stocked pro shop. Our club has hosted many regional, provincial, and national championships throughout the years.

Library Programs for Children

The Yarrow and the Chilliwack Libraries present story times for children. Library storytellers read aloud, and children join in the fun with familiar rhymes and songs (and learn some new ones, too!) Yarrow and Chilliwack Libraries offer Family and Pyjama Storytimes. Both libraries present registered, special Babytime Storytimes in the fall and spring.

Library Programs for Teens

Teen programs at the Chilliwack and Yarrow libraries include video games, board and card games, crafts, anime and manga, and plenty of time to have great conversations and meet new people. 2013 will see the grand opening of a modern, 10,600 square foot facility located at 5819 Tyson Rd in Chilliwack. It will feature a community multi-purpose room that can be used after-hours as well as a comfortable seating area with a fireplace. The Sardis Library will feature a high quality indoor environment through access to daylight and views, and will have natural ventilation. The focus of the design team has been on quality construction and sustainable features which will create a beautiful, functional community space.

What in the world is Chilliwack FC?

Spring Soccer League

Chilliwack FC is Chilliwack’s local soccer club with over 2,000 players registered. Although youth-focused, the club has evolved to include a few adult teams to provide a path for players to “Play the World’s Game” from age 4 – 44 or even older. We are building a soccer club that all our membership is proud to support. The club is active year-round with two main playing seasons of Fall/Winter and Spring with additional select activities offered during the summer months. Our club is committed to the following four focus areas:

Our second largest season is played in the Spring. The registration period is between December and February with the season running from early April to the end of June. This is a recreational “fun” league with all games played at Fairﬁeld Island Park weekday evenings. The SSL league registration is capped at around 1,100 players.

This league provides players a chance to just enjoy playing the game without the pressures of competition like in the Fall/Winter program. Scores and standings are not kept, and no practices are scheduled though some teams may choose to have a few. Although teams are organized and parent/volunteer coaches assigned, the goal is to treat it more like a pick-up game of soccer where players just show up and have fun! Heritage Park Chilliwack Heritage Park is a 65 acre park that boasts a 150,000 square foot building which can accommodate a number of events. Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals, Kart Racing and local club events just to name a few. There is a seven acre ﬁeld for outdoor concerts and festivals as well as plenty of space for camping with your event. There is also a 5/8 mile race track and rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events. All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals. Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also

attracts travellers from all over the Canada, as well as many visitors from the United States. Heritage Park is a versatile facility. Features include a flexible public address system, box office and show office. The building is comprised of four floors; two are concrete floors that measure approximately 35,000 square feet each. There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor. We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements. The building houses a portable stage, as well as tables and chairs. Our washroom facilities include showers and are handicapped accessible. Heritage Park is not only a fine multiuse facility, but it also offers you a management and staff who are committed to your satisfaction. We would be pleased to work with you to help make your event a success.
