Submitted The inaugural Brandon Salviulo Memorial Scholarship for $1000 was recently presented to Adam Ravenstein, a student in College of the Rockies’ Fire Services program.
The Salviulo family have raised over $40,000 so far in memory of their son, Brandon, who passed away in a tragic ATV accident in 2009. With the help of the Creston Kootenay Foundation, who is managing the funds, the
Salviulo’s are honouring Brandon’s dream of becoming a firefighter. Ravenstein, a student in the Fire Training Certificate program, was very happy to be the first recipient of this scholarship. “I am honoured to be chosen. I love what I’m doing so having this scholarship helps me to feel even better about going to school,” he remarks. Presenting the scholarship to Ravenstein was an emotional experience for Brandon’s parents, Enzo and Laurel as they saw their dream of honouring their son realized. They are grateful for all the help the received along the way. “Enzo, Morgan, Bryanna and I would like
to thank all of the volunteers, businesses and participants for all of the donations over the last three years that allowed us to create this scholarship in Brandon’s name. We want each and every person who helped out to feel that they are a part of this scholarship,” Laurel says. Information regarding the fundraising efforts for this fund can be found on the Brandon Salviulo Memorial Scholarship Facebook page. Government resources for coming PST return The government of B.C. is reaching out to businesses to help them prepare for the return of the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) with all permanent exemptions on April 1, 2013. Government increased business outreach activities in October and November to explain the timeline for re-implementation of the PST, what assistance is available to business, how to register, and to promote the new e-services option, eTaxBC. This new online service will make administration of the sales tax easier for businesses. Starting Jan. 2, 2013, eTaxBC services will be available for online registration. Chambers of commerce and business organizations are being offered special seminars
covering the general principals of the PST and eTaxBC. Six were held in November and more are under development. Here are some of the return to PST tools and services that are now available to help keep businesses informed during the transition: • Book a one-on-one consultation with a ministry tax specialist. So far over 800 requests have been received and over 160 consultations have been completed. • Participate in an online webinar covering the general principles of the PST and eTaxBC. Over 300 businesses have registered for webinars, three webinars have been held and more are being scheduled for December. see PST page 5
Kootenay News Advertiser Monday, December 10, 2012 PST from page 4
• Call the toll-free number with questions about the new PST (1 877 388-4440). Thousands of questions from businesses have already been answered. • View the video: Returning to the PST - An Overview for Business. • View the new notices and bulletins on the application of PST and related exemptions. • Email questions to: CTBTaxQuestions@ gov.bc.ca Letters were mailed out to over 160,000 B.C. businesses in late September advising how to get information on the return to PST, and government has reached out to chambers of commerce and business associations to offer presentations with information businesses need for the transition.
Provincial legislation/ regulations: A new provincial sales tax notice, “General Transitional Rules for the Re-Implementation of the Provincial Sales Tax”, was issued in October. This notice provides general descriptions of transition rules for the re-implementation of the PST. The transitional rules describe how and when PST applies to transactions that straddle April 1, 2013, and should be read in conjunction with federal transitional rules for the elimination of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in B.C. The rules outlined in the notice are subject to the approval of the legislative assembly. The Ministry of Finance continues to work on developing the regulations, and transi-

tional and consequential amendments to support the Provincial Sales Tax Act, which received royal assent on May 31, 2012. Government plans to publicly release a final proposed version of the Provincial Sales Tax Act with proposed amendments in late December. All amendments to legislation require the approval of the legislative assembly, expected in spring 2013. Business transition: More than 100,000
businesses will need to register to collect the PST, and about 30,000 of those are new businesses that have only existed under an HST tax system. They will need to learn to administer the PST in tandem with the GST, and adjust their accounting and administrative systems and prepare to collect a second sales tax, as of Apr. 1, 2013. More information can be found at www.PSTinBC.ca.

When you workout, especially if you mostly use free weights, cable machines, stability balls, bosu balls etc., maintaining good form is extremely important. If you workout without really knowing what you’re doing, especially if you are quite consistent with your training, chances are you might aggraAurélie vate an already faulty posture. Wiedemann The body always migrates towards its position of strength, so if for example you are stronger on your right side and you do an exercise like a dumbbell press on a stability ball, chances are you might not be able to maintain your pelvis straight during the exercise and you might not even notice or feel it. This will certainly worsen your already existing muscular imbalance. Consequently hiring a personal trainer to make sure you get cued properly in order to maintain optimal form throughout your workout is indispensable. Furthermore, if you are a beginner you should stop your set when you feel you could still perform two repetitions with good form. This is important for two main reasons: One: When you start a workout and have no experience you are quite far from your genetic potential, so you will still gain strength quickly even if you don’t perform to exhaustion. Two: This technique ensures safety since you avoid programming your body with faulty form and you always have the strength to perform the repetitions properly. Of course that rule doesn’t apply to more advanced weight lifters since they can usually maintain good form even when their muscles start to fatigue, consequently they can (and should) push themselves more without risking injury. Training your body is much like programming a computer: You want to put in the right information in order to achieve the desired outcome, but If you don’t you might not see any results or worse risk damaging it. The Perfect Present

Spending some time playing detective can pay off when you see the looks on your loved one’s face as they open the perfect gift. Perfect from page 10
essarily, but you will get inspired and know where to go when you’re ready to take out your wallet. Keep your ears open around your loved ones and listen to what they’re saying about their wish list, their practical needs, and their dreams. A spouse who grumbles that they don’t get out enough would enjoy a gift certificate for the
neighbourhood movie theatre, while a loved one complaining about their poorly equipped kitchen would be a prime recipient of useful kitchen utensils and gadgets. When visiting friends and family, look around the home to see what’s missing or what needs replacing. When shopping with them, pay attention to where their gaze wanders. You can create such opportuni-

ties by inviting them out for a coffee and then suggesting some window shopping. It’s a great way to collect gift ideas without them even knowing! With children, their desires are so much easier to pick up on. All you have to do is sit down with them while they write a letter to Santa or ask them to circle everything that catches their eye in a catalogue. The very last trick is to be vigilant all year long: find a great hiding spot
and tuck away suitable gifts that you stumble across by chance during the year. When there’s no Christmas-time pressure your thinking will be clearer and the extra money spent likely won’t be missed. You’ll also earn yourself some time away from the frenzy of Christmas shopping and get some real bargains. It’s another smart way to shop and hit the bull’s eye at the same time.

Renovating or remodelling a kitchen is all about putting more life into it, transforming the décor, and designing new storage space. It is also a good investment that could increase the value of your home and facilitate its resale. In the past, kitchens were often
neglected when home owners were deciding on their priorities. These days, however, we want to be proud of our kitchens and show them off. That means kitchens should be as welcoming and functional as possible. These days, designer
kitchens with clean and simple lines are emphasized with the use of aluminum, wood, and stainless steel. Work areas are expansive and lit precisely and generously, with numerous electrical outlets at the ready for all types of appliances. Opening up the kitchen, so as to integrate it into the dining room or living room, continues to be the main remodelling

FORD (BC) LTD
The Avenger drives like a sports Funky yet economical, the XV car with family car sensibilities Crosstrek can go anywhere
PHOTO SUBMITTED
PHOTO SUBMITTED
The Avenger makes it easy to decide to go for some fantastic styling on your next vehicle.
XV Crosstrek—economical, spacious and with the clearance to hit the backcountry.
Overall: Dodge’s midsize sedan is a clone of the Chrysler 200 for space and power choices, but carries a bit of Charger swagger in its design; nothing significantly new here, but expect an Alfa Romeo-based replacement to arrive soon. Drivetrain: The base fourcylinder basically carries over (although there’s an optional six-speed automatic transmission); the 3.6-litre V6 is up nearly 50 horsepower over the outgoing 3.5. If you’ve convinced yourself that one of Chrysler’s mid-size sedans are within your budget, you now get to choose whether the slightly plainer but cleaner-looking Chrysler 200 or the Dodge Avenger’s Charger-influenced looks is the sedan you can live with. The fact that both cars are priced about the same and offer the same
Overall: An Impreza by another name alters its style to resemble a junior edition of the Subaru Outback, and it works. Drivetrain: Nothing overly special here, just the Impreza’s impressive and economical 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower at the ready; choose from a fivespeed manual transmission, or a continuously variable (CVT) option. Is this Subaru for real? Or is the new XV Crosstrek arriving this fall just faking it? Just when you think the Japan-based automaker has settled down and become a conservative member of the community, it ratchets up the funkiness and creates this bold and brash off-roaderstyle Impreza wagon. In reality, the Crosstrek’s maximum tasks include rough road and
footprint and power teams won’t make your selection any easier. As with the 200, the Avenger’s overhauled interior that was introduced for the 2011 model year is much more passenger-friendly and eye-pleasing (fewer square shapes/grids and more metal-look plastic trim), with soft-touch materials and warm ambient lighting. Dodge claims that the cabin is one of the quietest in the segment, thanks to a plethora of sound deadening “treatments”. At the same time, the Avenger’s stance was lowered, the track width (the distance between the left and right tires) widened and most of the suspension bushings changed out to improve ride and road holding qualities. The exterior, which has remained mostly unaltered since the Avenger’s 2008 re-launch, was treated to a
more aggressive nose and rear deck. Not so new is the base 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission. Move up and the four-speed is swapped for a more fuel-friendly sixspeed auto. Optional is a 283-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 that’s standard on the R/T matched to a six-speed automatic. Models for 2013 include the Canada Value Package (SE); SXT; SXT Plus; and R/T. The latter offers colour-matched exterior touches, 18-inch wheels, more aggressive leatherwrapped seats, black grilles and headlight surrounds, and a rear spoiler. Although the V6 engine and transmission are identical to every other Avenger, the suspension is stiffer and lower, which translates to a more enthusiastic driving experience.
weather conditions and some limited off-trail adventuring. Subaru has provided the Crosstrek with its own distinctive nosepiece, bumpers, roof rails, side cladding and rear spoiler. The meaner macho look is completed with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch all-season tires mounted to customlook rims. The slightly bigger front brake rotors add stopping power and a hiked-up suspension provides 22 centimetres of ground clearance, which is nearly eight centimetres more than the Impreza. That should be plenty for straddling rock-strewn terrain and fording shallow streams. The Crosstrek is fired up with a 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that comes straight out of the Impreza. Optional is a continuously variable unit with paddle-shifters that
operate six pre-set ratios. An ECO gauge that encourages fuel-saving driving habits is included with either transmission. The standard allwheel-drive systems are, not surprisingly, Impreza-based. Manual-gearbox models split the torque 50:50 in normal driving situations, but will apportion up to 80 percent to either front or rear wheels when slippage is detected. With automatics, the Active Torque Split system maintains a 60:40 division, but automatically directs up to 100 percent of the torque to either set of wheels when necessary. It’s by no means a Jeep- or Land Rover-style rock-crawler, but for more typical outdoor activities, the XV Crosstrek is about as real as it gets.
