Donations needed for Christmas hampers

With Christmas approaching, the Creston Ministerial Association is preparing to pack hampers to allow those in need to enjoy the holiday season.

In less than two weeks, the hampers will be filled with non-perishable food, gifts and household items for about 450 recipients — singles and families — in the Creston Valley, a number that has climbed from 350 only five years ago.

“You want the numbers to go down in terms of the need, but the need is there,” said ministerial association president Tom Greentree, pastor at Erickson’s Evangelical Covenant Church.

The community has never held back from supporting the program, both with donations of food, books (through the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy) and toys (through Pyramid Building Supplies), as well as cash — last year, about $23,000 was spent to buy necessary items that were not donated, including gift cards for turkeys from Overwaitea Foods.

“It’s not just a little meal — it’s actually quite a significant amount,” said Greentree, adding that the hampers can easily last into the new year. “It enables them to smooth that experience.”

Town donates $1,000 to start Bird Fest

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Organizers of the Creston Valley Bird Fest walked out of the Nov. 27 Creston town council meeting with another $1,000 in the coffers after receiving a start-up grant for the 2013 inaugural event.

Project planner Tanna Patterson said Bird Fest was inspired by a family visit to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia and Florida last year.

“We learned that there are 300 bird species in the Okefenokee,” Patterson told council. “When we came back home I did a little checking and found that the Creston Valley has about 300 bird species, too. Not all at one time, maybe, but through the course of a year.”

Bird Fest is starting small, Patterson said, with evening events scheduled for May 10 and activities throughout May 11, which is also International Migratory Bird Day. Operating as a committee of the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight, the festival’s goal is “to encourage environmental awareness for young and old with support from the community.”

Patterson said Bird Fest will kick off with a welcome reception on May 10, to be followed with an Owl Prowl.

On May 11, a variety of events are scheduled, including 10 tours to different locations around the valley, each led by a field expert.

A large variety of other activities are also in the planning stages. On May 11, keynote speaker Brian Keating will present “Going High: Two Spirit-lifting Journeys.”

After a brief discussion, council voted unanimously (Couns. Tanya

Ducharme and Wesly Graham were absent) to contribute $1,000 from a discretionary fund.

“I want to make this a start-up contribution, not an ongoing commitment,” Coun. Judy Gadicke said.

Directors of Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A, B and C have committed $500 each and other grants are in the application stage, Patterson said. Sponsorships in the form of in-kind donations are already in place.

Council Briefs •Crista Komar, who coordinates the Success by Six program, gave council a report on the year’s activities.

She described events including the Magic School Bus, Kidapalooza, a Little Warriors workshop on child sexual abuse awareness, a strategic planning process and other activities that she said added up to a busy, successful year.

Success by Six helped celebrate National Aboriginal Day in June by distributing copies of the Ktunaxa book, One Greet Tree, to schools, child care centres, libraries and other programs.

•Council accepted the minutes of the latest Community Pride Committee, which included a request, since accepted, that BC Transit add some evening runs in December to allow riders to see the Creston Valley Tour of Lights.

•A $250 discretionary grant was approved for the Prince Charles Secondary School senior boys volleyball team, which is representing the Kootenays in the provincial championships in Kelowna.

•Mayor Ron Toyota’s attendance at a Columbia Power Corp. open house in Trail on Dec. 3 was approved.

Ministry and YRB crews complete paving project

It was a busy summer and fall for Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Yellowhead Road and Bridge (YRB) crews in the Creston Valley, with 43 kilometres of road being resurfaced in various ways, for a total of $3.2 million.

The main work was a project that saw “mill-and-fill” resurfacing on five kilometres

of Highway 3 from Kootenay Pass summit to the east chainup area and on Highway 3 from Canyon-Lister Road to the Arrow Creek Bridge, the latter portion also receiving a new guardrail.

Seven kilometres of Canyon-Lister Road received new pavement overlay, and recycled asphalt pavement was laid on five kilometres of West Creston Road.

In an unrelated project, YRB crews sealcoated 23 kilo-

metres of Canyon-Lister Road.

Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle was glad to see the road brought up to a better standard, which was pushed through by Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom and district manager Glenn Olleck.

“This is a huge deal for the people of Canyon-Lister,” he said. “We weren’t even on the list.”

Town, RDCK join province to reduce wood smoke Encouraging the replacement of inefficient wood stoves is one way to improve personal air health and safety.

To that end, the Ministry of Environment, Regional District of Central Kootenay and Town of Creston have once again teamed up to fund a wood stove exchange program, according to Environment Minister Terry Lake.

“Through our wood stove exchange program, we are committed to reducing

the number of old, inefficient wood stoves in B.C. and replacing them with more cost-efficient, environmentally friendly models,” Lake said. “By upgrading to a new stove and following the tips to burn smarter, British Columbians can ensure better air quality in their communities and a more positive effect on their own health.”

Lake announced that the RDCK will receive $15,750 as one of 48 regional districts the province adds to wood stove program, which will total $192,000 for 2013. The goal, he said, is to have as many as 700 woodstoves changed out during the year.

Creston town council voted Nov. 27 to continue its support, adding a $100 rebate for stoves exchanged in Creston residences, and also picking up the $20 disposal fee at the landfill for the replaced stove.

To qualify for the program, approved stoves must be used and installation must be certified.

While the program has resulted in the replacement of about 5,000 old stoves in the province since 2008, the provincial government estimates 116,000 older model stoves are still currently in use, and that they can affect the health of homeowners, their 2013

Short of replacing their old stoves, owners can help reduce their impact by using well-seasoned wood cut into smaller pieces, a practice that increases efficiency and lowers carbon emissions. A smaller, hotter fire should give off very little sign of wood smoke and leave no odour of smoke indoors.

Creston’s participation in the program will have no impact on the town’s budget.

Staffan Klassen, director of finance and corporate services, said the fund has been underutilized in recent years and money remains available.

RCMP rescue 85-year-old from down embankment

An eagle-eyed RCMP officer saved an 85-year-old woman from spending a potentially life-threatening night in her car, which went down a steep embankment on Highway 21 on Nov. 26.

“We got a call in the evening that she had left at 2 p.m. to go to Porthill and hadn’t returned,” RCMP Cpl. Monte Taylor said on Monday.

“When we checked with the border we learned she hadn’t crossed that day.”

Taylor and Const. Ryan Salant began to patrol Highway 21 for clues late in the evening.

Taylor drove along the highway shoulder while his partner shined a flashlight down the embankment.

“Const. Salant was almost hanging out of the window trying to see when he got a glimpse of a taillight,” Taylor said.

Salant scrambled down the embankment while Taylor

radioed for an ambulance.

The woman was uninjured, but had remained in the car, knowing that she would be unable to make it up the steep slope to the highway. She was chilled and uncomfortable after spending more than eight hours in a car that she couldn’t restart.

Paramedics were unable to bring her back up and Creston Fire Rescue members were called to perform a longline rescue. The woman was taken to hospital, where she was treated for exposure.

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 51 calls for service from Nov. 26-Dec. 2, Taylor reported.

November 26 •A female was arrested and later released on an undertaking following a domestic assault in the 1800 block of Pine Street.

•A report came from the 400 block of Leadville Road of an erratic driver.

another driver who had been reported as driving erratically, he said he didn’t believe he had been weaving but, if he was, it was because he was tired.

•A complaint over possession of a truck from the 6000 block of Highway 3A was determined not to be a police matter.

•A ladder placed beneath a window was one clue that a break and enter might have taken place in the 2200 block of Birch Street.

•A male reported to be making harassing phone calls to a Cory Road residence and possibly stalking individuals was warned about his behavior.

•An investigation of a male in the 1500 block of Cook Street reported to be in breach of his probation revealed that he was not.

•A resident of the 1400 block of Hillside Street who expressed concerns about a home support worker was advised to contact the employer.

November 27 •Creston police assisted Kaslo RCMP by serving a summons to a male who has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

•A female from the 2800 block of Highway 3 reported that on the day previous she had been awakened by a strange female in her house who was yelling out an unfamiliar name. The intoxicated female left, apparently having realized she was in the wrong house.

•The source of a 911 cellphone call could not be traced.

•Police kept the peace while a female retrieved possessions from her residence following a domestic dispute.

•When police responded to a call from the 2100 block of Elm Street about a male bleeding in the kitchen, they found him. He was intoxicated and had lacerations on his body. A possible weapon was located in the home and the female was arrested and held in police cells until a justice of the peace ordered her release until a future court date.

•Police are investigating a report of a historical and longterm series of sexual assaults on a female in Yahk.

November 28 •When a father reported his concern for the safety of his daughter in a Lister residence police investigated and learned she was in Cranbrook for the weekend, apparently in good care.

•A possibly suicidal person was transported to hospital for evaluation.

•A Good Samaritan moved an abandoned car seat from Highway 3 off to the side of the road, then reported its whereabouts to police.

•Police were on their way to a Crawford Bay residence when the parents of an adult male called to report the intoxicated male had calmed down and police presence was no longer required. The call initiated when the man’s parents took away his car keys so he couldn’t drive, an action he responded to by pushing his father and damaging some property.

December 29 •Police and a victim assistance counsellor notified the next of kin about a death on behalf of Strathcona, Alta., RCMP. •When police responded to a report from a provincial agency that a sex and drug orgy was going on in a residence while children were in the same room, they found only a male and female in the residence, and no evidence of drugs.

November 30 •A short time later, a call came from Cook Street accusing the male in the aforementioned residence of causing a disturbance, which police determined couldn’t have happened.

•A female reported she had hung up after dialing 911 when she learned her boyfriend was also calling police to complain about harassment.

•Ammunition was turned into the RCMP station to be destroyed.

•No injuries resulted when a semi turning from Highway 21 onto Erickson Road clipped a pickup truck.

•The female’s passport that was found in the 1500 block of Canyon Street can be claimed at the RCMP station.

•Following numerous incidents of vehicles passing stopped school buses in front of Adam Robertson Elementary School, school officials have asked police to issue tickets, not warnings, and also informed police that they are willing to appear in court as witnesses if the tickets are challenged.

December 1 •More than $1,000 in damage was sustained by a vehicle that collided with a deer on Highway 3 at Thompson Road. No injuries were reported.

He’s been in the Creston Valley for less than two years, and this isn’t the first hamper program Greentree has been involved with, but he’s no less impressed by the support shown by the entire valley.

“The ministerial association may oversee it, but it’s a gift from the Creston Valley,” he said. “It speaks a lot to the heart of the community.”

Kootenay Bay author tells tale of Alberta settlers

It took decades, but the October publication of Napi’s Dance meant that Kootenay Bay’s Alanda Greene was finally able to tell the story that has its roots in her childhood.

Her father’s parents homesteaded in Southern Alberta, and when she was young, Greene and her family would visit the farm each summer to help with the harvest.

“I would walk with my father in the country where there was still untouched prairie,” she said. “I kept having visions of people who were there.”

And while living on the edge of Calgary, she would often gallop bareback on her horse into the country to get a feel for times past.

“I felt like a country mouse even though I lived in the city,” she said. “I would imagine it without fences in those open areas.”

Napi’s Dance tells the story of Snake Woman, a member of the Blackfoot, which dominated Southern Alberta in the mid1800s, and 15-year-old Eleanor, who arrives in Western Canada with her homesteading parents in the mid-1800s. Their backgrounds differ greatly, but they share a love of the sweeping prairie landscape and a hope that their respective peoples can survive a time of great change.

Like Eleanor, Greene’s grandmother was 15 when she moved to Alberta, and although the character is quite different, that age played an important role in the creation of Napi’s Dance.

“It’s that time when young women are really able to make new connections to nature and be receptive to something new,” Greene said. “She was the right age for being taken out of the culture she was in and taken to this vast open prairie.”

Greene’s childhood memories were obviously key to the story, which was sparked in 1992, at the burial of her 98-year-old grandmother, who died just after Greene completed an intensive course at the Yasodhara Ashram.

While at a Lethbridge cemetery, recalled Greene, “the minister takes the dirt and she scatters it on top and says, ‘Ashes to ashes.’ A pack of coyotes comes over the ridge and starts to sing. ... What came to my mind is that there was a story to be told. I don’t know if it was about my grandmother, but it was about that land.”

She began researching the First Nations and settlers’ experiences, and discovered that settlers had a strong sense they could do what they wished with the land.

Ktunaxa apply for Jumbo plan review

While members of the Ktunaxa Nation gathered in Cranbrook on Friday, a similar group did the same in Vancouver, where they officially filed an application for a judicial review of the Jumbo Glacier Resort.

The Ktunaxa are seeking a review of the resort’s master development plan, which was approved in March.

The Jumbo Glacier Resort, which was granted mountain resort municipality status in November, would be built in the heart of what the Ktunaxa call Qat’muk, home of the grizzly bear spirit. The Ktunaxa say building the year-round ski resort would destroy the nation’s spiritual values.

“Jumbo Resort, if built, will forever destroy the connection Ktunaxa have with Qat’muk,” said Ktunaxa nation chair Kathryn Teneese. “It will sever this special and significant relationship that we have developed with that land for countless generations.”

And so the Ktunaxa launched another challenge in their 20-year history of opposing the project.

Teneese said the Ktunaxa people have over come enormous challenges to keep their culture alive,

and preserving Qat’muk is an important step for them.

“Ktunaxa have been the victim of residential schools, and attempts to systematically destroy our culture and heritage. We had to hide our language, culture and spiritual beliefs away, simply in order to save them,” Teneese said. “We have kept our most precious beliefs a secret, in accordance with our laws and in order to protect and preserve them for future generations of Ktunaxa.

“Now, after overcoming these incredible adversities, working to develop our nation, and getting to a place where we are starting to see some real successes, we are faced with the reality that the B.C. government is once again trying to destroy something vital to who we are as a people.”

Even though the Jumbo Glacier Resort is set to become a municipality in February, Teneese said the First Nation will continue their fight.

“I can tell you with all my conviction, that Ktunaxa will never allow themselves to be damaged as a people, ever again,” she said. “Nobody has the right to take away what is rightfully ours. The fight to save Qat’muk is far from over, and it’s long overdue that we start asking harder questions of the B.C. government, and challenge their process.”

“It was quite a disruption for those people there, a tremendous disruption of a way of life that came through the disruption to the land,” said Greene, a retired teacher who manages the Yasodhara Ashram bookstore.

She and her husband, Sonni, moved to the East Shore in 1975 with the goal of using it as a base for travelling and teaching.

“I was definitely not ready to settle down — but apparently Sonni was,” she said with a laugh.

They bought land at Kootenay Bay in 1978, then built a house in 1983. She continued to teach at the Crawford Bay school, and in 1996, wrote Rights to Responsibility: Multiple Approaches to Developing Character and Community, a book for middle school educators.

“I did a lot of writing for education journals,” said Greene.

“The publishing company noted I was writing a lot of things in Green Teacher. They asked if I could pull it together into a whole book.”

It was a different experience writing fiction, and Greene had a strong urge to include too much historical information, but when that was edited out, it left behind a strong story — one that was editor ’s choice on iTunes for the week of Oct. 22-29, quite an accomplishment at the end of the long road toward publication.

“I’m not quite sure I Sonni Greene ever believed it would get published,” she said. “It’s not an easy thing to do for an unknown writer.”

A commitment to connecting

In his short tenure as chief of the Lower Kootenay Band, Jason Louie has made remarkable strides in finding ways to connect his small community to the rest of the Creston Valley. It’s an effort that deserves our support and one will make us all the better for it.

I admire Chief Louie all the more for the ways in which he is reaching out because he is not an extrovert who fulfills his own needs by moving around in the spotlight. Louie is quiet and thoughtful and most of what goes on in his mind is an intensely personal experience. He wears the mantle of leadership out of a sense of responsibility rather than a desire for attention.

Perhaps it was coincidental that Louie was elected chief and the LKB attracted Linda Berg to come to the Creston Valley and take on the challenge of chief operating officer, the community’s key administrative position.

Berg, like Louie, were following in the steps of men who had their jobs for a long time and neither had an easy time of it. In a small community like Lower Kootenay, there is a heightened awareness of what is going on with local government and the pressures are many. Fortunately for Louie, he is working with an administrator who is also a very good communicator and the two have been surprisingly successful in raising the Lower Kootenay profile around the Creston Valley.

Another fortunate coincidence has been the arrival of RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan, whose Métis heritage gives him a deep understanding of the challenges First Nations people face and the many attributes

Residents owed use of cemetery To the Editor: (Re: “Town weighing cemetery options”, Nov. 22 Advance, page 1) I want to share some observations about the cemetery discussion.

First, I think the community owes each of its members the opportunity to have his or her death memorialized according to the rites and customs of the community.

Second, if Regional district of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle thinks town workers are paid too much, he should re-examine the kind of community in which he wants to live. The master and serf model does not sit very well with me.

If he is truly searching for those who might be receiving more than their fair share of the town’s scarce resources, I suggest he look a little farther up the food chain.

Finally, a friend once wondered why we don’t combine our cemeteries and golf courses since they look so much alike.

B.C. needs Conservative premier To the Editor: With the coming B.C. provincial election in the spring of next year, I thought this would be a good time to add my two cents’ worth.

Personally, I would like to see a man or woman Conservative candidate make a run for the premiership, someone who has new and fresh ideas and is willing to work with the Liberals, New Democrats and Greens — because, as far as I am concerned, partisan politics is now considered redundant. Originally, I was a supporter of the NDP from the late 1970s until the early 1980s. But that’s a very long story.

He or she must possess a warm heart, and be compassionate, optimistic, charismatic, sincere, honest and able to connect with people on an emotional, spiritual and intellectual level, but at the same time, be strong willed, with a hell-bent-for-leather, take-noprisoners attitude by having the courage to eliminate poverty, hunger, greed, corruption, ignorance, domestic violence, racism, bullying, unemployment, pollution and illiteracy. As Margaret Thatcher once said, “Defeat? I do not recognize the meaning of the word!”

In a future letter, I will talk more about the upcoming B.C. election, and also share my conservative philosophy with you. However, it will be three months before I write my next letter, so

please be patient and bear with me, as it will be well worth the wait.

But in the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in my hometown of Creston a merry Christmas on this St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6). Remember, angels most certainly exist and miracles do indeed occur. There is also plenty to be said about the power of prayer — this is something I do every day of the year.

God bless everyone, regardless of your faith, and peace on Earth, and good will to all men, women and children.

Always be kind to others, help those who are less fortunate, keep thinking positively, never give up hope and don’t worry — the world will not come to an end on Dec. 21. Instead, it will mark the dawn of a new beginning for civilization and our beautiful planet.

Leadership of LKB offers hope To the Editor: On Nov. 23, I walked, along with several others, with Chief Jason Louie from the Lower Kootenay Band administration building to the Creston Valley Hospital. I have, for a considerable period of time, been impressed with the inspired leadership Louie provides to the band. This walk was an example of this leadership.

The chief held a workshop in months past where the participants from the band were given the opportunity to learn how to construct a Kootenay canoe and to, in fact, build a canoe from scratch. The construction of this canoe is, as far as I understand, an important part of the cultural tradition of the band. I can only imagine how deeply inspired the class members were in participating in this historic process. I imagine they were considerably inspired. The result of their efforts was genuinely pleasing to the eye.

The canoe symbolized to me the reincarnation of the pride of place the band enjoyed in years long past. The canoe symbolized to me a continuation of healing in the band and a commitment to that process. Louie may have had a similar understanding to mine and much greater clarity regarding it. He asked the participants what they would do with their fine creation and it was decided that the canoe should be presented to the Creston Valley Hospital, an institution devoted to helping people recover their health. And, it was done with the intention that this canoe also symbolizes the partnership and friendship that is growing between the town of Creston and the band.

Louie is a decorated soldier who has just recently completed his time with the Canadian Armed Forces. He is a warrior.

He walked with us in his Army uniform.

He walked, in my estimation, with considerable pride and remarkable humility.

He walked hand in hand with his wife, Angie. He walked with us to raise

awareness of the horrible consequences of addictions on us all. He was joined on the walk by other leaders, among them Mayor Ron Toyota, Dr. Randy Grahn, the chief of staff of Creston Valley Hospital, and RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan. Louie’s idea was inspired and it elicited the enthusiastic support of these people and many others.

I am very impressed with the inspired leadership the Lower Kootenay Band is currently enjoying. It gives me considerable hope for the future.

Local books great reads To the Editor: On the afternoon of Nov. 23, I went to Black Bear Books to collect my copy of I’ll be Home Soon by Luanne Armstrong. I finished it before midnight — it is one of those stories which quickly engages you and will not let you go. The heroine is 13 and she taught me plenty. I wondered why it had sold for only $12.50.

The next day I began another book by the same author, The Light through the Trees: Reflections on Land and Farming. This is an easy read and highly recommended for anyone who needs or would like (or not like) to give his/ her head a shake.

Chamber wants members Teaching positions open at rec centre

The Santa Claus Parade and festival is done for another year, everyone is busy getting ready for Christmas and the holidays (and making an effort to shop local first, supporting our local businesses, friends and family) and at the chamber of commerce we are gearing up for 2013. And there is a lot to do!

Tr a d i t i o n a l l y, chambers of commerce offer a variety of services to their membership — advocacy, networking events, information sharing and business assistance. These have been discussed in this column previously.

In addition, the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce works with the Town of Creston and our Regional District of Central Kootenay directors (areas B and C) to offer tourism and economic development services.

Of course, one of the big things we worked on in 2012 was a branding strategy to better promote Creston Valley to the world, inviting people to visit, relocate and set up their businesses here. No conditional sentences for violent offenders

Amendments that eliminate conditional sentences for serious and violent crimes — the final component of the Safe Streets and Communities Act — came into force on Nov. 20.

Our government has a strong record of putting victims first, getting tough on serious and violent offenders, and keeping our streets and communities safe.

House arrest should not be available for offenders of serious crimes like sexual assault, kidnapping and human trafficking. Those who commit these violent crimes must serve their time behind bars, not in the comfort of their homes, and that is exactly the issue this legislation corrects.

The Criminal Code outlines the circumstances when a conditional sentence can be imposed.

The amendments in this component of Safe Streets and Communities Act maintain these conditions and expand the list describing when a conditional sentence is not available, including: •any offence for which the law prescribes a maximum penalty of 14 years or life imprisonment;

•any offence prosecuted by indictment and for which the law prescribes a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment that results in bodily harm, involves the import/export, trafficking or production of drugs or involves the use of a weapon; and •a listed offence prosecuted by indictment and for which the law prescribes a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment — which means that crimes such as theft David Wilks over $5,000, breaking and entering, and theft of a motor vehicle are now included on the list of indictable offences ineligible for a conditional sentence.

The government introduced the Safe Streets and Communities Act on Sept. 20, 2011, fulfilling its commitment to expeditiously introduce several law-and-order bills aimed at combating crime and terrorism. PCSS teams finish volleyball season PRINCE CHARLES SECONDARY SCHOOL

The high school volleyball season ended on the weekend, with the Prince Charles Secondary School Grade 8 boys, coached by Mike Nelson and Larry Hills, finishing first in the East Kootenay.

•The senior boys team travelled to Kelowna for the AA provincial championship having placed first in the East Kootenay, and finished 14th in the province.

The team, with two graduating seniors, Daniel Wigen and Niel Jacobsen, was coached by Rick Czar.

The boys won three games, defeating Richmond’s H.J. Cambie Secondary School 2-1, Vernon Secondary School 2-1 and Charles Hayes Secondary School of Prince Rupert 2-1. They lost four games: 2-0 to Charles Hayes, 3-0 to

Abbotsford’s Mennonite Educational Institute, 2-0 to Prince George’s College Heights Secondary School and 2-0 to Highland Secondary School of Comox.

•The senior girls finished third in the east and west Kootenays, coached by Bob Gollan and Allison Kepke. The team has seven graduating seniors, Jillian Bjarnason, Cheyanne Kehler, Lena Makortoff, Marissa Van Ryskensvelde, Ashley Sommerfeld, Kara Phillips and Danielle Reid.

•Coached by Dianne MacDonald and Joyce Lawrence, the junior girls finished 10th in the East Kootenay.

•The junior boys, coached by Carrie Czar and Doug Dortman, finished sixth in the East Kootenay.

•Coached by Judine Maki, the Grade 8 girls finished sixth in the East Kootenay.

Peewee Chiefs hosting provincial tourney CRESTON CHIEFS

The Creston Chiefs peewee hockey team is pleased to announce that Creston will host the 2013 provincial hockey championships for peewee tier 3 from March 17-21, 2013. The team expects to host nine teams from all over B.C. and the Yukon. These players are just 11 and 12 years old, so many of their families will likely attend as well, bringing to town around 135 families for the week.

The Chiefs are in the early stages of organizing and would like to invite interested members of the community or service groups to join the organizing committee. A number of players on the Creston team were fortunate to be able to play at the provincial championships in Quesnel last year. As a community — their organizing committee was largely non-hockey members — put on a fabulous tournament and made the visitors all feel very welcome, and the Chiefs hope to meet or exceed their efforts.

the team will be seeking sponsorships, as well. In addition to games, there will be a banquet for players and officials, and both opening and closing ceremonies. Each team will play one or sometimes two games a day, leaving plenty of free time to

enjoy all that the Creston Valley has to offer.

The peewee Chiefs are very excited to be hosting this event and welcome the expertise and assistance from the community to make this a memorable tournament for

all who attend. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our community.

Thunder Cats’ losing streak now totals six

Despite a strong effort, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats haven’t had a win in over two weeks, racking up their fifth and sixth straight losses on the weekend to division rivals, the Golden Rockets and Columbia Valley Rockies.

With 20 points, the Thunder Cats now sit two ahead of the last-place Rockies and eight behind the Rockets in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division.

The weekend’s first loss came on Friday night, when the Rockets visited the John Bucyk Arena. Ty Kronewitt scored for the Thunder Cats in the middle of the first period, with a Rockets goal tying the score by the end. The Rockets scored again in the second period and twice, including the game-winner, in the third before Tyler Akeroyd and Trevor Hanna added the Thunder Cats’ second and third, the latter with 17 seconds left.

“It was a good game, actually,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “We put ourselves in a position to win. … They played a good road game

and it just came down to one shot.”

For a score of 4-3, the Rockets outshot the Thunder Cats 35-29, and Hepditch credits his goalie with keeping the score as low as it was.

“Tyler Moffat made some really big saves for us,” he said. “We were under pressure there for a while but he really stepped up and kept us in the game.”

The Thunder Cats fared less well the following night, when they visited Invermere, where they suffered a 5-2 loss to the Rockies.

“It don’t think the score reflects the game as a whole,” said Hepditch. “We had some bounces against us that weren’t the best.”

The Rockies started the game’s scoring with a goal in the first period, and two early in the second.

Trevor LeBlanc scored for the Thunder Cats in the middle of the second, followed by another Rockies goal just under the fiveminute mark. He assisted Brady Ward on a power-play goal early in the third period, which was followed at 2:16 by the Rockies’ fifth.

The loss showed some discouragement on the Thunder Cats’ part — outshooting the Rockies 45-26 should have had a different outcome.

“We had plenty of opportunities to score, but the snowball effect kind of came into play,” said Hepditch. “Frustration kind of snuck in on us and we kind of shot ourselves in foot a little bit.”

Right now, he added, the team needs a win to get its confidence back.

“The effort’s there in every game,” he said. “We’re right about to explode and jump out of the water — then there’s a bad break here and a bad bounce there.”

This weekend’s schedule is a repeat of last — Golden in Creston on Friday, and Creston

in Invermere on Saturday — but Hepditch can see the outcome being far different.

“It will be another good test for us,” Hepditch said. “I think the guys will be hungry to rebound on last weekend and get out of the slump they’re in.”

Bantam rep hockey team earns mixed results CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s bantam rep team travelled to Cranbrook on Nov. 24 to battle the Kootenay Ice at Western Financial Place. Cole Bright was the team’s starting goaltender.

Despite the boys’ hard work, Creston lost with a 6-3 final. Two goals were scored in the first period, by Brody Ryan (unassisted), and Matthew Toews assisted by Ryan. A third period goal was by Jake Kolodychuk, with an assist by defenceman Ethan Plotnikoff.

On Nov. 25, the boys faced Elk Valley in a league game on home ice. Matthew Armitage was starting goaltender.

assisted by Brody Ryan. Elk Valley fought back and tied it up quickly. Creston’s second goal went to Kolodychuk (unassisted). Plotnikoff, assisted by Armitage, scored Creston’s third goal, and the fourth was an unassisted goal scored by Ryan. Kolodychuk got his second goal with assists from Jake Livingstone and Matthew Toews. Kolodychuk made it a hat trick with the game winner in the third, assisted by Alex Blackmore and Levi Palmer.

Elk Valley pulled their goaltender to make it a battle to the end, but Creston took the big win, with a final score of 6-5.

The team travelled to Spokane on Nov. 30 for the Fall Classic Bantam AA Tournament. On Friday afternoon, the boys faced familiar rivals in Eagles Arena, battling Cranbrook. Following a scoreless first period, with Armitage starting in net, Cranbrook put one on the board early in the second. Kolodychuk tied it up unassisted, followed by another by Palmer, also unassisted.

Cranbrook tied it up again, followed by another with seven minutes remaining in the third.

Despite their best efforts, Creston couldn’t find the back of the net and lost 3-2.

On Saturday morning, Creston faced Seattle, with goaltending shared by Armitage and Cole Bright. The boys started strong but fell short against this strong western team, losing 9-2.

Vinny Blackmore, unassisted in the first period, and Brody Ryan, assisted by Plotnikoff in the second, scored goals for Creston.

On Saturday evening, the team travelled to Coeur D’Alene where they faced Portland with starting goaltender Armitage. An early unassisted goal was scored for Creston by Vinny. A second goal for Creston was scored by Ryan, assisted again by Plotnikoff. The boys lost a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes on the clock and, after an exciting game, finished with a 2-2 tie.

The tournament ended on Sunday morning with a battle against High River, with Bright as starting goaltender. The first two goals for Creston were scored by Kolodychuk, the first assisted by Alex Blackmore, and the second unassisted. The team entered the third period a 2-2 tie. With 1.8 seconds left on the clock, Ryan scored, assisted by Plotnikoff, ending the tournament with the boys’ only win.

Obituaries Catherine Tessman November 20, 2012 Catherine (Rena) Tessman passed away suddenly on November 20, 2012 in the Creston Valley at the age of 90 years.

Rena married Michael Pawelko in Calgary, AB and together they moved to northern Alberta where they operated a Case dealership. Rena later married David Tessman. They moved to High River, AB, where they resided for several years before moving to Creston, BC, making Arrowcreek, BC and later Erickson, BC, their home.

Rena enjoyed all her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent endless hours crafting and tried her hand at any project. She truly enjoyed her knitting needles and refused to send you home without a scarf, a pair of slippers, or an afghan. Rena was a member of T.A.P.S. and she always looked forward to their special events and outings. She made many new friends and spoke highly of the people and organizers involved with the T.A.P.S. association.

Crafty Croonies were also a special part of her group.

Rena also made awesome bread, cinnamon rolls and enjoyed her garden and Áowers.

Rena was predeceased by her mother and father, William and Isabella Norton; sister Faye; two granddaughters Lynne and Diane; husband David Tessman; daughter-in-law Renee and daughter Faye.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Belle Daignault (Wally McDevitt), Dodie Smith, Doris (Joe) Daignault, Maxine (Dan) Gaudry, Bev August, Eileen (Jerry) Klassen, Emily Wilson and Grace Tessman; sons John ( MaryNell) Pawelko and Marx (Lisa) Tessman; brother Bud Norton; twenty grand children and twenty-Àve great grandchildren.

A Memorial Tea was held on Saturday November 24, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Interment of Ashes to take place at a later date.

Helen passed away at Swan Valley Lodge on Tuesday November 27, 2012 at the age of 94 years, with family by her side.

Mom was born on January 17, 1918 to Ada and Stewart Morehouse at Prince Albert, SK. She moved to Calgary, AB when she was eight. Mom volunteered for the Canadian Red Cross Foundation, the Foothills Hospital and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Wife of deceased Calgary Police Inspector, Harold Barefoot, mother of only child, Harolyn Gail (Wayne) Long of BC, grandmother to Denton Craig and greatgrandmother to Alexandra and Liam, all of Calgary, AB, mom’s favourite city.

A heartfelt thank you to Silver Willow Lodge, Nanton, AB and Swan Valley Lodge, Creston, BC for the compassion, care and good meals that mom spoke of often.

Be at peace Mom and know you did your best for all you met and nurtured.

Ten bright safety tips to light up your holiday season

(NC)—The holidays are almost here and for many it’s a time to “deck the halls” and “trim the tree.” Decorating the house inside and out with strings of bright lights and other colourful decorations is part of celebrating the season. It’s a special occasion to enjoy with family and friends, but it’s also a time to be careful. To stay safe and avoid electrical hazards around your home, the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services offers these tips – • Use only approved electrical products that meet Canadian standards and carry the mark of a recognized certification agency like the Canadian Standards Association or similar group.

• Always read manufacturers’ instructions and follow ratings on electrical products for indoor and outdoor use.

• Holiday lights are not designed for year-round use and can deteriorate over time. Check them thoroughly for wear or damage before use and store them carefully when not in use.

• Always turn off or unplug holiday lights and other decorations before you go to bed or leave the house.

Make the most of the holiday season. Have fun and enjoy putting up lights and decorations around your home, but be careful and follow these tips to stay safe.

• If you find broken lights or cracked sockets, replace them. Don’t risk a potential electrical shock or fire.

• If electrical cords are frayed or split, discard them. Damaged cords can expose electrical wires and may lead to electrical shock or fire.

• When putting up your lights and decorations, don’t run extension cords through doorways, windows or high-traffic areas without covering them or protecting from potential damage.

• Indoors or out -- never overload electrical outlets, power bars or circuits.

• Always plug outdoor-rated extension cords into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacle installed in accordance with your provincial safety code. If the outlet is not GFCI-protected, buy and use a portable GFCI outlet adapter.

• Stay clear – at least 3 metres/10 feet -- of overhead power lines when decorating outdoors and using ladders.

Create a safe home for your pets during the holidays

(NC)—Decorating your home for the holidays is an exciting time of year for families, but small changes in the environment can be drastic for pets. From visiting family and holiday feasts, to decorations and gifts under the Christmas tree, the holidays present many exciting – and potentially dangerous – new situations for your little furry friends. PetSmart offers the following tips to help pet-parents prepare for changes in store: • Deck the halls with tape and cord covers.

Christmas decorations mean extra electrical cords, plugs and plenty of tempting new “chew toys”. Pet-parents should take the extra time during decorating to tape down or cover cords to help prevent shocks, burns or more serious injuries.

• Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... aren’t good for pets. We often think we’retreating

our little ones with table scraps but this “treat” can be harmful since dogs and cats do not have the same digestive systems or nutritional needs as people. Chocolate contains the heart stimulant theobromine, which, even in small quantities, can be toxic to dogs and cats. Keep petfriendly treats on-hand instead, so they munch safely while still enjoying the feasting fun.

• Hollyis not so jolly for pets… Some of our favourite seasonal décor is harmless for humans, but can be unsafe for animals. Mistletoe, holly berries and poinsettia plants are poisonous to pets, causing severe, upset stomachs. (NC)—From hosting holiday get-togethers to sharing traditional feasts with friends and family, the holiday party season can wreak havoc on your bank account. According to a poll by TD Canada Trust, Canadians planned to spend an average of $1,100 on food, gifts, and entertainment during the festive season last year.

As you’re dashing through the mall buying last minute decorations, host gifts and groceries, consider these tips from TD Canada Trust on how to scale back the party season without scaling back on the cheer: • Make a plan – First, figure out how much you can afford to spend on parties this season. Think about the events you attended and hosted last year and look through your old bank statements to get a rough figure on how much you spent. You may be surprised at what you find.

• Set a budget – Create a budget for what you can realistically afford and don’t forget to include incidentals like host/hostess gifts and taxis. Jump online to check prices and consider setting aside extra funds to cushion for unexpected invitations and expenses. If you’re hosting a party this year, understanding how much you have to spend and the true cost of things will help you decide whether to throw a cookie exchange, intimate dinner party or a big soiree.

See the light to stay awake during winter

(NC)—Most Canadians have to wake up early and in the winter months, cold temperatures and a lack of natural light can turn that part of the day into one that’s downright painful.

Experts advise various options to help combat the winter blues, including eating properly, taking vitamin D and exercising. Nearly all agree that the most important way to keep energy levels up and to stay healthy in the winter is to get proper sleep.

good turkey dinner choice. Too bad, because their acidity balances out the gravy and other creamy dishes, the flavours go nicely with cranberry and turkey meat, and they just look so darned nice on the table.

Staying with the turkey theme, my first choice of a red wine with Christmas dinner is Pinot Noir, which shouldn’t be surprising because a lot of Rosés (or Blancs de Noir) are made from that very grape. Light enough to not overwhelm the white meat, the wine typically has a combination of fruit and earthy flavours to make it an excellent complement for the holiday meal.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention another favourite turkey dinner pairing, particularly for those who, like me, favour sage and onion dressing. Near Oliver is a winery that has long been one of our favourites. Silver Sage Winery owner Anna Magnola has a Romanian heritage and she carries some of the family traditions with her when she’s in the winery.

A wild sage leaf infusion gives an off-dry Gewurztraminer a wonderful, aromatic sage flavour that makes it an obvious choice to go with the stuffing.

The Sage, as it’s called, is a fruit bomb, too, and I’d be in big trouble if I didn’t arrive at my sister’s holiday table without a bottle or two under my arm!

rum and Coke and Hawkins Cheezies. We don’t have any locally made sparkling wines yet (note to self: check with Baillie-Grohman on the status of the bubbly that was bottled two years ago), but there many good, not too expensive choices.

These days we tend to turn to the sparkling wines made in Spain

by Freixenet, a large producer about an hour outside of Barcelona. BC Liquor Store shoppers will think of the matte finish on black and clear bottles, always at a reasonable price. We visited the Freixenet winery when we travelled to Europe last fall and it was a great experience. Naturally, popping the cork on one of the bottles takes brilliant sunny day we us right back to that learned that any given time there are more than 2 million bottles of bubbly of various ages on site.

We are also partial to Moscato, the low alcohol, slightly off-dry Italian sparkler that always seems like the perfect choice for brunch. The fruity flavours go nicely with most brunch dishes and the low—usually around 10 per cent—alcohol helps one avoid an unwanted buzz that might make the rest of the day a write-off.

When that really special occasion arises, a good bottle of Champagne (a name that should only be used for the sparkling wines from the namesake region in France) is hard to beat. What makes

Champagne so special? Extremely tiny bubbles in huge quantities, and an unsurpassed ability to age, for starters.

BC makes some nice bubblies, too, and Sumac Ridge is always a good choice. But consider

Of course, gifts for the wine lover don’t have to be restricted to wines. Glasses are always a good choice because, well, they tend to break. In fact, my beloved set of German crystal tulip-shaped 22-ounce glasses, which started out as a set of six, is now down to a single stem after another broke while I was (carefully) drying it the other night. 22 ounces? For red wines, I prefer glasses that hold at least three times the volume of a quarter-bottle serving, which is 6.5 ounces. They give the liquid plenty of chance to aerate, with swirling a safe activity for helping that process along.

Wine art is an increasingly popular gift idea.

In our solarium, our walls feature a number of pieces by local artists and they are among my favourite art works, helping to create a warm ambience in our favourite room.

As a final note, we are entering something of a golden age in beer production and beer is becoming increasingly popular to pair with food.

Most small communities have micro-breweries and liquor stores carry good selections of domestic and international products. In Creston, shopping for the beer lover on your gift list might be a snap with a stop at Columbia Brewery’s Kokanee Beer Gear Store. It’s a fun place to shop.
