Nutcracker a North Island tradition J.R. Rardon Black Press PORT McNEILL— Karina Cann has been performing the Nutcracker Ballet since 2008. But she had never actually seen the ballet in its entirety until last year.

Cann, a Grade 12 student at North Island Secondary School, has performed with Portside Academy of

Performing Arts since the studio was opened in 2007 by instructor and choreographer Alana Collins.

But it took a Rotary Foreign Exchange trip to Spain last year for Cann to finally get a chance to see the Nutcracker, when a touring company from Kiev performed the traditional holiday classic in Barcelona.

ballet I’ve ever seen,” said Cann, who would later see a performance of Swan Lake, also in Barcelona.

Portside Academy dancers were back on the Sunset Elementary School stage last week preparing for their fifth annual production of Nutcracker, which will take place at the school Dec. 7 and 8 beginning at 7 p.m. each evening.

The iconic ballet, based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and backed by the familar score of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is a holiday staple in towns and cities large enough to support a theatre or bring in a touring company.

But it was a new experience for the north end of Vancouver Island when Collins elected to put on the show in 2008 with a cast of local youths ranging from three to 18 years of age. The production has proved popular enough that Portside Academy has brought it back each holiday

“I just realized this year that this is a really popular ballet, and I get to do it every year,” said Bethany Waines

of Port McNeill, 10.

Waines, who has performed the ballet each year, said she could not recall seeing the ballet performed

prior to dancing in it.

“I think I might have heard something about the story, but I didn’t really know it.”

Giselle Alfred of

Alert Bay, 8, is one of a growing number of young dancers who ferry from Cormorant Island to attend dance classes in Portside Academy’s Port McNeill studio. This will be her second year in Nutcracker, and she said she knew nothing of the story about young Clara and her dream trip to the Land of Sweets until shortly before taking the stage in her debut.

“Our teacher played it for us on TV at school,” said Alfred. “It was kind of different, though. Clara’s name was Marie.”

Cann also admitted little familiarity with the Nutcracker before she began dancing in it.

“I probably watched it when I was younger,” she said. “I vaguely knew the story, I think.”

“It doesn’t feel like I ever left, really,” Cann said last week

while going through technical rehearsal.

“But going away made me realize how much dance is my passion.

So much so that I’m planning to continue with it in post-

secondary school.”

Taping or bracing can sometimes be used effectively to give the plantar fascia the support it needs to heal. A physiotherapist can help you correctly diagnose the cause of your plantar faciitis and give you suggestions to help decrease the stress through the fascia.

About 90 per cent of people with plantar fasciitis improve significantly after two months. If the plantar fasciitis continues after a few months of conservative treatment, your doctor may inject your heel with steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (corticosteroid). If the symptoms persist your doctor may prescribe a walking cast or a splint to wear at night. In very rare cases, surgery is necessary to release the plantar fascia and relieve the pain.

In the winter months storms hit B.C. more frequently. This increases the potential for power outages. BC Hydro is suggesting six easy steps to ensure you and your family are better prepared.

1. Know the number to call when the power goes out. To report an outage, call 1-888-POWERON or *HYDRO on your mobile phone.

Automatic notification will be available through smart meters once all meters have been installed and the system is fully operational over the next year.

2. Have an emergency kit ready and easily accessible.

The kit should include: flashlights, a battery-operated radio, extra batteries, a corded telephone, warm clothing and blankets, a first aid kit, non-perishable, readyto-eat foods and a copy

A few anglers made their way along the trail and were John Drewett from London England fishing for with Gold River Steelhead cutties.

The Nimpkish River will have a run of Steelhead and this month the Gold River will be a main destination for anglers now through May. The Oyster River and Salmon Rivers will start to produce Steelhead February through May. Some local lakes are fishing well from shore and Lynn Unger has had good luck catching trout in the 5 pound range.

I decided to make my way up to Morton Lake about 17 kms north on Highway#19. Stocked lakes in the area are Morton, Mohun and Mary.

I met a couple from Nanaimo who were fishing in the are a for the first time. Many anglers in the Courtenay area have a big selection of water to fish on rivers and lakes.

Maple lake, Wolf, Comox and Spider are popular destinations for spin casting and using flies. Many anglers will head to the Qualicum river, Puntledge and Stamp.

6. If you see a fallen power line, stay at least 10 metres away at all times. Never go near or touch a fallen line. Report fallen power lines to BC Hydro.

A spa by any other name would feel just as good Renée Andor Black Press ROYSTON — The spa at the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort relaunched itself with a new name and spa menu recently.

Spa director Andrea Fisher says the spa has been at the resort since 2003, but it has never had its own special name; it was always known as the spa at the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort.

“We’ve never really branched out as our own entity so we decided to do our own name, which now is the Pacific Mist Spa,” says Fisher, adding a new logo was created along with the new name, and the name reflects the spa’s signature service,

the Pacific Mist Hydropath.

The Pacific Mist Spa was officially launched with an open house. A variety of Comox Valley women — and a handful of men — came out for spa tours, which included tasty treats from the resort’s restaurant, The Breakwater and sample services, like chair massages, manicures and skincare evaluations.

The tour also included an inside peek at the Pacific Mist Hydropath. The hydropath service includes eight unique features including a mineral massage pool, sea mineral soak and tidal baths.

This grant is awarded under NSERC’s College and Community Innovation Program.

IE grants are designed to foster partnerships between colleges and the private sector that will lead to business innovation at the local, regional and national levels.

Specifically, this grant will build North

Island College’s applied research and technology transfer capacity to support and collaborate with the Vancouver Island salmon aquaculture industry. The BC Salmon Farming Association (BCSFA) and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) have identified a need to strengthen capacity

in monitoring of hard bed substrates where some fish farms are, or may, in the future, be located. This project addresses two fundamental research issues of concern to fish farmers and regulators: 1) What are the significant ecological changes likely to occur at hard bottom sites associated with salmon farm

operations?; and 2) What are the physical, biological and/or chemical habitat indicators and their threshold(s) at which significant negative macro-benthic changes occur?

The tour also allowed guests to check out the new spa menu, which Fisher said was revamped with the customer in mind.

“We’ve just been

listening to what our guests have wanted and asked for, so we put together some new packages for them,” says Fisher.

“The girls (spa staff) are really excited.

Everyone sort of had input on the menu when I was deciding to change it over, you know, the surveys went out, the staff got to see what parts they liked, what parts they didn’t like, what their guests were saying, what their opinions were — so

tonight they’re all really excited.”

A new Express Seascape is on offer, which is a manicure and pedicure combination, and is something Fisher says guests seemed to be looking for.

An Express Retreat package is also new, which includes a facial, manicure and pedicure.

“And then I also looked at what was trending at spas for 2013 and part of that

is men going to spas, so we added a page in the new menu that’s just for men,” adds Fisher. “And we also added some bridal information in there as well because we get pretty busy in the summer with weddings and brides.”

Fisher notes the spa building has received some maintenance upgrades such as fresh paint to update its look.

Although the spa has gone through

some changes recently, Fisher says the positive attitudes of the staff will not change.

“We have staff that have worked here 10 to 12 years — they’re really committed to their job and really committed to what they’re doing,” she says. “The staff here give amazing service and are just really happy to be here and provide the service so it makes it really fun, a really fun environment.”

New schoolhouse on the mountain Podium of Life ski Academy has secured a new location for its school on the mountain.

The building that used to be the restaurant, Sushi Mong, will now be the schoolhouse for Podium of Life.

It is conveniently located at the bottom of the Hawk chair, so kids can ski or board downhill to class daily.

Over the past two seasons classes were held at the main lodge, where students had to take a chair lift or walk up to class daily

from their condos.

Now they can click into their bindings and ski downhill. It is also located close to the Vancouver Island Mountain Center where students can have access to the weight training facilities.

“It will be nice to have a place to call our own,” says Shane Harle, who runs the school with his wife, Corey. “Our students will really benefit from having their own skiin, ski-out classroom on the mountain. It will create a sense

of belonging for our students. With already 13 students enrolled for the upcoming season from Grades 4 to 11 we are very excited to have a place to call our own.”

After the students finish a morning of study, they will have easy access to the Hawk chairlift where they will start the afternoon of training on the snow.

With the increased number of students and the addition of snowboarding, Podium of Life will be looking to hire other
