Welcome Message Kamloops is home to a diverse number of outdoor recreational activities to engage in during the chilly winter months. Cold, clear days lend well to a multitude of activities for people of all ages to enjoy.
Not as common today is the sight and sound of horse drawn sleighs and the sound of jingling bells on the horses’ harness. With limited snow ploughing services, people from outlying neighbourhoods depended on horse and sleigh to get into town. Young people’s social groups and school classes enjoyed snowy outings on farmers’ wagons piled high with hay and pulled by sturdy plough horses. Today, opportunities abound in the mountains and at a variety of horse ranches in the area for those who seek a good old-fashioned sleigh ride or a horseback ride through the snowy hills.
While the nature of outdoor recreational opportunities has evolved in Kamloops over the years, one thing has remained constant: the beauty of a sparkling white winter day with the sun shining bright in a clear blue sky, and the chance to walk, skate, slide, and play in Kamloops.
Services & Information
In years gone by, ski jumping was popular in the hills behind Royal Inland Hospital. Also, the hills around Kamloops have always been alive with the sounds of toboganners. In the days before car traffic was as heavy as it is today, First Avenue was often closed on snowy Saturdays so families could enjoy a spectacular ride down that long, steep hill. Today’s thrill seekers can enjoy these sports on local hills and mountains.

Robert Gilbert Robb Gilbert is the new Junior Archivist at the Kamloops Museum and Archives. In his first few weeks at the Archives he has enjoyed becoming immersed in Kamloops history and discovering the wealth of archival materials that are preserved at the KMA. In the coming year, Robb will be working on a project to arrange, describe, and preserve a number of archival collections to make them available for use by researchers and the wider public. The archival material documents the memory and heritage of Kamloops, and ranges from the papers of noted local families such as the Mansons and McLeans to more recent collections such as the records of David Ross, the former Director of the Western Canada Theatre Company.

Kamloops Aquatics is committed to fostering a safe, positive aquatic environment by providing quality sport, recreation and wellness programs for a diverse population.
Did You Know?
To Parents of Little Swimmers:
For public health, and to avoid pool closures, anyone not toilet-trained must wear a swim diaper. Swim diapers can be purchased at the indoor pools or most retail stores. Unlike regular diapers, a properly fitted swim diaper, whether a disposable or reusable type, prevents accidental fecal discharge without becoming saturated and heavy in the water. Swim diapers are not, however, a substitute for frequent diaper changing and bathroom breaks during your swim. Within Arm’s Reach for Your Child’s Safety Like most public pools across Canada, the City of Kamloops has an ‘Admission Policy’. The policy states that any child 6 years of age or under must always be accompanied in the water and be within arm’s length of a parent or other person 16 years of age or older. The ratio of children 6 years or under to parent/guardian must be no greater than three-to-one. Sanctioned by the Lifesaving Society, the Admission Policy is not based on swimming ability but on age. Because young children do not necessarily have the ability to exercise appropriate judgment, comprehend pool rules, or take direction from staff, adult supervision is required to ensure their safety. Your child’s safety is important to us. Drowning remains a leading cause of preventable death among young children in Canada. We appreciate your commitment to keeping within arm’s reach of your children and for leading the way for them to become water smart.

Aquatics The love of swimming starts here! 8 Level program for children 4 months to 6 years of age
Starfish 4-12 months
For Starfish, Duck and Sea Turtle, parents must participate in the classes with their child. These first 3 levels provide orientation to water for young children and their parent/caregiver and are participation-based only, without formal evaluation. For levels Sea Otter through Whale, children enter a level based on their age and abilities, are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to next level once all criteria has been successfully completed. Participation in Red Cross swim lessons may qualify you for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

• To enter this level, infants must be able to hold their head up. • The goals are to help infants experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver age-specific water safety.
• Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. • Age is the only condition for entering this level. • Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and active water play. The parent/caregiver also learns age-specific water safety.
• Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. • Age is the only condition for entering this level. • Swimmers learn, through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks. • Transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the Instructor. All skills are assisted by the Instructor. • Swimmers enter this level when they are 3 years of age • Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills. • Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2 metres, further develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Front swim and roll-over glide are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest-deep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). • Safety skills development includes water orientation, safe entries and exits and only swimming when an adult is present. • Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase their front and back glide with kick, and develop their roll-over glide, side glide and front swim. Safety skills include deep-water skills and use of a PFD. • Safety skills development such as water orientation, safe entries and exits and always asking for permission before going near the water. • Through games and other fun activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform a dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swimming distance to 10 metres. • Safety skills include jumping into deep-water and performing surface support for 10 seconds, recognizing when a swimmer needs help and using a PFD in deep water. • Through fun activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10 metres. Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and perform a distance swim of 15 metres. • Safety skills include identifying safe swimming areas, jumping into deep water, swimming 5m, surface support for 20 seconds a return to safety, throwing assists and sitting dives.
10-level program for children 5 to 14 years of age Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.
Aquatics
A healthy life through swimming.
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim. Help your child develop a healthy lifestyle through swimming. Your child will learn to swim and stay safe in a fun environment that promotes a personal best and celebrates individual success.
Introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.
The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed, while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water.
Introduction to back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. Introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.
In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all criteria have been successfully completed.
Lesson Fees Fees based on ten classes; fees pro-rated for sets with fewer classes. Swim Kids (30 min)....$45 Swim Kids (45 min)....$50 Swim Kids (60 min)....$58 Adult (30 min) ............$45
Introduction to front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.
Refinement of front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduction to elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim. Build skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduction to whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim. Introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each. Refinement of front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim. This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

children Bucket List For Kids Things they should do before they’re twelve The proposed activities on the bucket list are simple and cost little or nothing at all, making them especially attractive during this challenging economy. Along with keeping children ¿t, research shows time outside in nature improves a child’s ability to focus and concentrate, key skills for learning, and also reduces depression. The list provides a “gentle reminder” to parents to make green play a priority, alongside other activities like ballet or hockey. Aquafitness Aquafit is exercising through movement in water. Water generates natural ‘resistance’ which facilitates a full-body workout at your own pace and intensity. Buoyancy promotes ‘low impact’ movement by decreasing the shock transmitted through your bones and joints. Aqualite: For beginner to experienced exercisers looking for low intensity, low impact class in shallow water.
Aquafit: For all levels of exercisers looking for a low impact, high intensity class in shallow water. These classes feature full body strength, flexibility and cardio training. Deep Water Aquafit: For intermediate to experienced exercisers looking for a no impact, high intensity class in deep water. These classes feature full body strength, flexibility and cardio training and require flotation belts which are provided.

Safe to Participate - PAR-Q and You Being more active is very safe for most people; however, some people should check with their doctor before they start becoming much more physically active. All Aquafit participants must review the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) prior to participation. If you are between the ages of 15 and 69, the PAR-Q will tell you if you should check with your doctor before you start. If you are over 69 years of age and you are not used to being very active, check with your doctor before participating. For more details, please talk to the instructor or visit kamloops.ca/swim.
