file photo ne of the great things about living in this part of Canada is the tremendous choice that we have as consumers. There are retail outlets of all types very close to our homes and offices, and the selection of goods is probably wider and more diverse than it has ever been. December is usually one of the busiest shopping months of the year and it’s a good time to think about the benefits of shopping locally. Shopping locally doesn’t have to be within a block of your home. Nor does it have to be within a specific community. But shopping locally is most definitely done within Canada. Why does it make any difference where you shop? While most of us simply think of price, or perhaps price combined with service when we shop, there are other factors that are worth considering. Angie Quaale, president of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce, says that every dollar spent locally translates to at least five dollars of further economic activity. That’s because dollars spent with a local retailer are passed on to employees, governments, suppliers and non-profits. Local businesses have employees who live locally. They pay their employees for their labour. Their employees in turn spend money at other businesses, helping to employ other local people. They give donations to local charities, and pay for services supplied by local companies. Governments at all levels benefit tremendously from a healthy business community. We all pay sales taxes on most of our purchases. Businesses and their employees pay income taxes. Without these two fundamental taxes, governments could not provide the services that we need, such as health care and education. Municipal governments also benefit from local businesses, as they pay a substantial amount in property taxes and business licence fees. These help pay for services we all use, like roads, water, sewer and parks. Suppliers also benefits enormously from the money we spend at local businesses. Many businesses supply goods and services to businesses, from photocopy machines and telephone service to inventories of all kinds. Trucking firms are reliant on deliveries to businesses, and in many cases back to their retail customers. All these suppliers have employees of their own, who in turn spend money locally. Together, they all keep the economy moving. Local businesses also supporter many charities, sports teams and local community events. This support costs them money, but they do so to build goodwill and show that they are part of the larger community, and not just motivated by profit. At a time when many people are finding their dollars aren’t going too far, they naturally look for the best deals, That is understandable. But the sticker price isn’t the only price to consider. When consumers shop outside the country, the price includes lost jobs in Canada, losses in tax revenue and less business for suppliers. Charities also feel the effect. When you add up all the benefits, the best deals are available by shopping locally. Local retail outlets are anxious to keep their customers’ business, and attract new customers. They know the importance of satisfied customers. As you think about how much you are going to spend this month, and where you want to do your shopping, think about the benefits of shopping locally. We are all in this economy together, and the more support we offer to each other, the better off we will be. - Frank Bucholtz

Shop local to support local! Milner Village Market C

hristmas is less than 21 days away. Does the idea of venturing into overheated and overcrowded malls make you want to cringe? Do you remember when the best gifts were made by hand and designed to be treasured for years to come? Well, look no further than the Milner Village Market. Located in the nursery at the Milner Gardens this market has an amazing assortment of items for sale. You are guaranteed to find something for everyone on your Christmas list. Market co-managers Kim Heuring and Anita LaRoche are excited about this new winter market. It has been up and running since earlier this fall and will run until December 15th. Kim spent the last two years with the nonprofit Langley Community Farmer’s Market doing spring and summer markets. “The Milner Winter Market is a bit different,” she said. “There’s lots of potential at this new location and Milner Gardens are very supportive of us. We couldn’t do it without them,” said Kim. Fiona Jansen, the fundraising and retail manager concurs.”It’s a win-win situation for us, we really enjoy hosting this wonderful winter market and it brings people into our gift shop.” she said. The market is bounded on the north and west side by Milner Garden’s gift shop. Beautifully appointed for Christmas, there’s lots to see. Inside a life sized figure garbed in red and sitting at the piano captures the mood of holiday parties. The red barn that houses the gift shop features a stunning and massive crystal chandelier which may be the only one in Langley . Just in time for Christmas, the market is a great place to

photos supplied by Milner Village Market

Milner Village Market is a friendly place. When you arrive you are greeted by a pleasant market ambassador named Gwen. Gwen is on hand to welcome both vendors and shoppers. She will make you feel right at home as she points out the highlights of the market. A dedicated volunteer, among her other duties Gwen is also the official ‘sweeper’ of the puddles that inevitably gather due to the nature of the space. She’s there every Saturday so look for her in her bright yellow jacket and festive Christmas hat. While not run by a non-profit Milner Village Market keeps an open door policy and offers free space for not for profit community groups. One stall in particular features beautifully knitted scarves, shawls and hats. Lennie, who is a regular, sells these beautiful items to benefit the Children of Hope Orphanage in Mexico. Reasonably priced her creations are exquisite and one of a kind.

do your Christmas shopping and at the same time support local crafters, artisans and merchants. There are up to 40 vendors offering everything from fine homemade knitted garments to interesting specialty items. The market offers a little of everything. There are premium local food producers, gluten free baking, organic locally roasted coffee, soup mixes, local cheese, jewellery and handmade soaps. Because the Milner Village Market is a winter market, it is held indoors. The stalls are nestled underneath a white opaque roof keeping its customers safely out of the weather. You are advised to dress accordingly though, while there are heaters to take the chill off, you are still in a semi-outdoor environment.

Market time is family time so there’s a Kid Zone with a petting zoo. An assortment of cute farm animals including ducks, goats and chickens really enhance the country experience. Every market day there are crafts, games and balloon popping . “Something fun is always happening in the Kid Zone,” said Kim. Plan your visit today. The market will be open for two more Saturdays. The Milner Village Market is at Milner Gardens, 6690- 216 Street. Walk through the red barn and turn to your right. Passionate about our Community I

nstead of venturing south of the border for holiday gifts, why not support your community this Christmas? The people who own and operate their businesses in Langley are the same people who volunteer at your kid’s school, sponsor many community events and donate to all the fundraising events that happen here. Prices are somewhat lower in the U.S.A. and the relaxed amount of duty items make it attractive to venture down south, but this doesn’t help our own economy. Local business people live here and are raising their families here. They are committed to you so why not be committed to them. This year make a decision to shop local so you can support your neighbours and friends. Langley’s stores offer friendly customer service and convenient shopping hours. This makes shopping here a fun and stress-free experience. Many stores carry lots of unique and beautiful gift ideas. These are just a couple of examples of what our community has to offer. Business owners Carrie Thawchuk (The Passionate Home), and Rose Sidhu (Sheffield & Sons), are passionate about their community, their customers and their business. They put their heart and soul into operating their

stores and they work hard every day to make sure you, the customer is satisfied and happy with your purchases. Carrie Thawchuck, of The Passionate Home is a community volunteer who donates generously to local causes. She truly cares about her customers and she loves to offer them a variety of unique items and giftware. In her store you will find something unique and local. 99% of the items are reclaimed and recycled.

Passionate about our Community basic upholstery and there is one that features a very popular session on making a Padded Headboard. For something different this year Carrie offers a suggestion. “Instead of giving someone a scarf or bath salts, or perfume, give them a gift that will satisfy the recipient’s creative sole. They will learn how to do it themselves in a fun and encouraging space,” she said. “This is a great gift idea that keeps on giving and is something you won’t find south of the border.” Rose & Harjit Sidhu bought Sheffield & Sons in November 1995 and the business has steadily grown. Located in the Langley Mall, this store provides one stop shopping. The premise includes a full service post office, a gift shop and a coffee bar. Sheffield & Sons is a family run business and it’s ironic that with a name like Sheffield & Sons it was Rose and Harjit’s two daughters who grew up in the store. Every Saturday and after school they would come in to help out. Often they were seen doing their homework in a small corner of the store.

Rose and Harjit pride themselves on providing the very best deals for gift items for their customers. Rose attends all the gift shows from Seattle to Toronto and just about everywhere in between. She searches for the best bargain on gift items that are unique and affordable. Sheffield & Sons is the only gift shop of its type in Langley. In the past there were more, but the big box stores put an end to many of these small shops. “But the big box stores don’t carry the unique items that I do,” said Rose. Some items like the beautiful hand blown glass ornaments that light up are very inexpensive and must be seen to be appreciated. The shop also carries a small assortment of jewellery including memory bracelets that are easy to put on and wear,” she added. ‘Get a Senior Home for the Holidays’ contest

or most people, Christmas is a busy and sociable time filled with joy and time spent with loved ones. However, for the nearly 8 percent of seniors in Vancouver spending the holidays in hospitals or extended care facilities, the holiday season can feel like the loneliest time of the year. To help bring some Christmas spirit to those often forgotten, Nurse Next Door Vancouver is bringing a senior home for the holidays this year through their ‘Home for the Holidays’ contest.

ration, transportation and errand running right through to 24/7 medical care from a registered nurse.

“For seniors living in medical facilities, often the reason they cannot make it home for the holidays is because they require the assistance of trained caregivers or medical staff,” says Jamie Sinclair of Nurse Next Door Vancouver. “If the elderly patients’ family members are unable to help with their daily living activities and care needs, the senior may not be discharged.”

Nurse Next Door Vancouver is accepting Home for the Holidays contest submissions via e-mail until December 19 and they plan to make the contest a yearly tradition.

The Home for the Holidays winning senior will be provided with two days of complimentary home care services based on their individual needs. Promising to do whatever it takes to make their holiday special, Nurse Next Door’s team can provide home care services ranging from friendly companionship, delicious meal prepa-

“After decades of celebrating the season with family and traditions, this time of year can amplify issues of loneliness and depression,” says Sinclair. “While it’s important to provide for seniors’ physical needs, what really excites us is knowing that we’ll be making their lives better at a time when they may spend Christmas alone.”

“We want to make a senior’s holiday special,” adds Sinclair. “Nurse Next Door can help with Christmas baking, holiday decorating or shopping - anything that would make this season special.” Home for the Holidays program details: Nurse Next Door is looking for submissions by seniors, facilities or the general public of individuals whose life would benefit by being home for the holidays. ecent findings show a trend toward downsizing the annual holiday office party due to poor economic times. But this may be a mistake on the part of employers.

According to a recent CareerThink readers survey called “What Do YOU Think,” 84 percent of respondents believe that a holiday office party is good for employee morale. Some survey participants said that they would not miss an office party, though most agree that’s it is a good thing to have. Keeping the office party tradition going is one thing employers can do to boost employee morale -- which often translates into better business.

Party planners dusting off their event-planning skills may need a refresher course in how to throw a successful (and appropriate) office party. Here are some tips to do just that. • Throw the party off-premises. Most employees spend 8 to 10 hours a day at their places of employment. Hosting a party at the office, factory or place of business can seem like just an extension of the regular working day. Instead, plan a location that’s nearby but won’t seem like work itself. There are plenty of restaurants, hotels, catering halls and even public parks that rent rooms. Just be sure to book it well in advance because reservations fill up quickly during the holidays.

• Invite employees’ spouses and children. Opening up the invitation to the family members means employees won’t need to feel torn about attending the party or spending time at home. Plus, this is a good opportunity for spouses and children to interact.

Holiday Office Party bag lunches, treat employees to some delicious dishes. Work with a caterer to have a variety of offerings. If money is an issue, make it a pot luck theme where everyone gets to bring one dish and then everyone enjoys it buffetstyle. • Go sparingly on the alcohol. Experts agree to disagree on the topic of alcoholic beverages at office functions. While some say it is perfectly OK, others argue that alcohol can lead to reduced inhibitions and thusly embarrassing situations, including confessing crushes on coworkers or speaking one’s mind about the boss. If alcohol is served, hosts should realize they are responsible for the safety of employees heading home. Have transportation ready for those who have imbibed too much. • Hire a photographer. Enlist the services of a professional photographer to capture the night’s festivities. Then these photos can be put together in a collage or a photo book passed out later as a favor. Hiring an unbiased photographer means everyone will be photographed and amateurs simply won’t be snapping shots of friends.

The holidays are a fun time of year to boost employee morale. Throwing an office party is still one of the easiest ways to show workers they are appreciated. • Treat it like your own party. Employers or the party planner can greet guests by the door so they feel immediately warm and welcomed. Create a mood with inviting decor and mood lighting that is completely opposite of the stark fluorescent lights of the office. • Remember food often makes the bash. Instead of cafeteria fare or brown-

• Enlist the help of a party planning team. Let the coworkers decide what type of event to have. Get feedback from employees to pick something they will enjoy. • Keep it neutral. Although the party may be taking place during the holiday season, there’s no need to slant it toward any one holiday theme. This way everyone feels included in the festivities, regardless of religious beliefs. • Nix the gift-sharing. Many employees do not want to feel obligated to buy gifts for coworkers, especially when they’re strapped for time and funds for gifts for their own friends and family. However, employees may like something from the boss saying that they are appreciated. If bonuses aren’t in the cards, employers can consider smaller financial gifts, gift cards to a restaurant, boxes of chocolate, or something else that shows appreciation.

Oh, Nuts!

T

he sweet, sweet fragrance of baking butter, sugar & flour, it’s how I imagine heaven would smell. It’s that time of year, shortbread is everywhere and most of it is delicious! Everyone has their favorite recipe, some are thin and crisp, a not so distant cousin to the sugar cookie, some are made with *gasp* margarine and others rich, dense, flakey & buttery as they should be. I love shortbread. The last few years I have been making browned butter shortbread by toasting the butter and cooling it again before I blend it into the recipe; it adds a deep layer of nutty complexity to the dough. I also love spiced shortbread, fortified very simply with a little freshly ground cardamom, Chinese five spice, cinnamon or nutmeg. It’s delicious, the addition of the spice create an almost savory element that dangerously encourages you to have more than one! An important part of any recipe, especially one that only has 4 ingredients is the quality of the ingredients. Buy the best butter you can, and yes – it must be butter, butter is one of the oldest ingredients on the planet and has staying power for a reason. It tastes SO good. Always buy the unsalted and salt it yourself as required, it gives you more control to adjust the recipes to your taste.

Decor Wrap

As far as spices go, when you can, buy them whole and grind them yourself. The essential oils are trapped in the whole spice and are released when ground, the flavors are going to be much more intense and “real”, requiring you to actually use less. Nutmeg is a primary example of a spice best bought whole and an ingredient very commonly called for this time of year. Nutmeg is a spice harvested from plants of the Myristica genus native to Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The spice is derived from the seed of the plant, while the red membrane that covers it is mace. Nutmeg has been used as a savory ingredient in Greek & Middle Eastern recipes for centuries but in North America, we use it primarily in sweet dishes although it is appearing more & more often other places. Nutmeg has a depth of earthiness to it that adds that little somethin’ somethin’ to your holiday egg nog, pumpkin pie and mulled wine, some even claim it’s an aphrodisiac but I am pretty sure that’s the nog.

Keep your nutmeg stored in the cupboard, out of reach from the little ones & of course away from your pets. 2 tablespoons is a lot of nutmeg, which added to any recipe would render it inedible. A few grates of fresh nutmeg, literally ¼ teaspoon or less is what I would add to a batch of shortbread or a dish of scalloped potatoes, less than that to a cream sauce or curry. So…word to the wise; fresh is best, sometimes less is more and nutmeg should be used recreationally only. Happy cooking!

➤

Like most things in life, you can get too much of a good thing. Apparently, when more than 2 tablespoons of nutmeg are ingested it can cause hallucinations and delusions. Those don’t usually add to the festivities.

Tips when buying a natural Christmas Tree M

wrapped in twine as you place it in the stand. This makes the tree easier to control.

any people harbor strong opinions with regard to which type of Christmas tree they want to purchase. Some cannot live without a natural, freshly-cut Christmas tree, while others prefer the convenience of artificial trees. Those who insist on a natural tree might want to consider the following tips when buying what’s likely their biggest decorative item of the holiday season.

• Choose the right location. When looking for the right place to set up your natural tree, it’s best to choose a spot that’s cool and free of drafts. The tree should not be placed near heat sources, including appliances, fireplaces or vents, because such heat sources create a safety hazard and can make it difficult for the tree to retain moisture. There should also be ample space between the top of the tree and the ceiling.

• Ask when the tree was cut down. Precut trees may be cut down weeks before they’re sold. So if you’re buying a precut tree, chances are the tree was cut down much earlier than you think. This doesn’t mean the tree won’t make it through the holiday season, but a tree that was cut several weeks ago should have some of its bottom trunk removed before it’s placed in the stand. This will make it easier for the tree to consume water. This step likely isn’t necessary if the tree was cut down the same day you bring it home.

Get a live Christmas tree.

• Place some covering on the ground beneath the tree. Even a freshly cut natural tree will shed needles over the course of the holiday season. Before placing the stand in the location you’ve chosen, put some type of covering, such as a tree bag, beneath the stand so it’s easier to gather all those needles once the holiday season has ended. • Remember that natural trees are thirsty. Men and women who have never had a natural Christmas tree in the past might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get. The stand’s reservoir should have lots of water, which should never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump, you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom of the trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holiday season. That can be a hassle once the tree has been decorated, so be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once per day to maintain adequate water levels.

• Have the tree shaken before taking it home. A tree should be shaken in a shaker before you put it in your car and bring it home. A shaker removes any debris or dead needles from the tree, which can save you the trouble of cleaning up all of those dead needles from your living room floor later on.

Christmas trees are planted expressly for the purpose of being cut down and turned into holiday decor. Responsible tree farms will plant many more trees than is needed for the purpose of Christmas trees. Be a good steward for the environment and recycle your tree once the holidays are over. Several charities offer tree chipping by donation.

• Have the tree wrapped before taking it home. A tree should also be wrapped in twine before taking it home. The twine should be tight enough to keep the tree’s branches from blowing in the wind when you attach the tree to the top of your vehicle. If possible, keep the tree

Tell a Traditional Story F

or more than twenty-five years the Christian Life Assembly Church in Langley has been wrapping the Christmas story in music and drama and presenting it as a free gift to the community. This year, there will be six performances of their unique presentation running from Thursday December 6th to Sunday December 9th. There will be four evening performances at 7:30 PM and two matinees, Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 pm. This year’s show, ‘A Christmas Special – Late Night Live with Jay Lenogren’ is written, produced and directed by Worship Directors Dean Maerz and Sylvia Buchholz. Dean and Sylvia have directed many of the very successful annual productions. “I suppose it would be easy to develop a good show and go with that year after year,” says Dean. “But we take pride in the creative process and we look forward to the challenge of telling the story in a different way each year.” “The Christmas story is amazing and we like to tell it in a fresh way to put people’s imagination in gear,” says Sylvia. “Maybe someone new will hear the message if we change the delivery a bit every year.” Dean and Sylvia start the creative process in May when they decide on a theme for the show. “This year we are doing something we have never done,” smiles Dean. We are doing a talk show style and the guests that come on stage will be telling real life stories to our host Jay Lenogren.” “We are including every element of a talk show, the ensemble stage band, the applause signs for the audience, video presentations and even gifts for audience members. We are not telling the story in a traditional way this year we, we are edgy and artsy and we recognize that the value of humor is a great way to get the message across.”

Tell a Traditional Story Children. We usually have between six or eight thousand people attend our shows and we hope our audiences will not only be entertained but also be spiritually moved by our unique presentation of the Christmas message” Once the theme has been set, the talent search begins. Dean explains, “Our cast is mainly selected from our very talented congregation. We do bring in special community performances but we focus on our people.” “Our auditions begin in August, and that is an exciting time,” says Sylvia. “We often find hidden talent and we always have surprises. There are some amazing moments when we can pull potential from someone and watch them grow on the stage. We always stay open and flexible in our casting and sometimes tailor a number around a new talent.” “We fit the show to our strengths,” explains Dean. “One year we may have a great drama director, another we may have some amazing artists or voices. We include all age groups in the show and we draw inspiration as we rehearse. Sometimes we may change a part based on the player. This year we are drawing on the super talented Jay Lundgren, the talk show host for the evening. Jay has a business and broadcasting degree and is a very, creative, and funny person. Dean and Sylvia do not put on the performance by themselves. There is a group of volunteers that do the makeup and hair, work the lighting and sound and manage the back stage activities. “We have more than eighty people involved in making this work,” says Sylvia.” “Our office staff, all the volunteers, and our media and communications people spend countless hours before and during the run of the show. Their enthusiasm is as great as the performers and that’s what makes it all work.” “This started with our idea,” muses Dean, “but once to we get to this point, a week before the show when the performers have taken the spotlight, I feel like I’m at the wheel of a big Cadillac, just steering it down the road.” The CLA gift to the community is free each year but there will be donation boxes on hand for cash donations that will be distributed back into the community as part of the church’s outreach program. Tickets for each performance are available at the Guest Services desk at the Christian Life Assembly Church. The church is located at 21277 – 56th. Ave. in Langley You don’t have to travel to New York or Los Angeles, ‘A Christmas Special – Late Night Live with Jay Lenogren’ is right here in Langley. ~ Jim McGregor
