Insulin free for two years after surgery WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A

groundbreaking procedure has radically altered the life of a Port Alberni man who struggled with Type 1 diabetes.

Darryl Chase, 39, is the eldest of two brothers who were both born and raised in Port Alberni. The part-time Canada Post worker and bicycle geek lives in the Valley with his wife and daughter.

Chase’s childhood was no different than that of other kids. He went to school, played sports and was a typical kid.

At age eight though, Chase noticed something that was different from other kids. He had an unquenchable thirst and urinated more frequently as a result.

His parents took him to the doctor, where he was subsequently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

“I learned that my body didn’t know what to do with its excess sugar so it was excreting it,” Chase

said. “And the more I urinated the more water I had to drink.”

Chase began living an all-too familiar story to diabetics: he had to prick his finger for a blood sample, test his blood sugar level then administer an insulin shot up to four times a day.

Chase played competitive sports through his teens but struggled to manage his diabetes.

“I’d drink a lot of water during sports I was sweating from a game,” he said.

“I’d end up falling asleep or waking up to someone giving me food to help me out of a diabetic reaction.”

His struggles weren’t just in sports either. “I’d be having a reaction and people would think that I was drunk or high on drugs and call the cops,” Chase said.

“They thought I was intoxicated until they saw my diabetic bracelet.”

At home, his family would be worried when he was out, thinking he was laying by the roadside in a diabetic reaction.

a thud at night they’d think he’d fallen during a reaction.

“People don’t realize that it doesn’t just affect you. It affects your family and friends too,” Chase said.

Chase was later diagnosed as a brittle diabetic, a type of insulin-dependent diabetes characterized by dramatic glucose level fluctuations that happen seemingly for no reason.

In 2010 Chase chose to pursue a new diabetes treatment — the Edmonton Protocol— in an effort to control his condition. He underwent an islet transplant in which pancreatic islet cells were injected directly into his liver with a needle.

Chase was subsequently weaned off insulin over the next five days and spent the next four weeks in hospital.

He’s not had to prick his finger or shoot insulin for the last two years. The aftereffect of the operation “was like nitro in an engine,” he said.

“My blood

circulation was better so my energy levels quadrupled. And I lost more than 10 pounds so the spare tire I’d developed was gone,” he said.

The procedure paid off in other ways as well. Chase liked to race mountain bikes. Previously, his muscles would turn into lead and his body would seize up early in a race.

“Now though, I can go harder longer and I don’t seize up until later.

Before, Chase’s goals revolved around diabetes and managing symptoms like eye hemorrhage “and just getting through the day without a reaction,” Chase said.

Today, Chase races, tools around in his small bike shop, and has set a goal of cycling to Edmonton for a check up.

“Doctors told me that my procedure wouldn’t cure me or repair the damage to my body,” Chase said.

“It turned out better than I thought it would, though.”

Angel named game changer at Grey Cup

Like the Energizer Bunny, Angel Magnussen just keeps going and going.

Magnussen, 16, was named the Scotiabank National Game Changer and won $100,000, which will be donated on her behalf to Variety - The Children’s Charity of British Columbia.

The announcement was made on-field during the second quarter of the 100th

Grey Cup in Toronto last Sunday.

Variety’s kids need wheelchairs, walkers, talking computers, special medicines and their mom and dad to be with them at the hospital, Magnussen said.

Magnussen was chosen by a combination of voting by an All-Star Jury panel made up of Michael “Pinball” Clemons - Vice-

Chair of the Toronto Argonauts.

Magnussen was selected based on the remarkable impact she’s made in her community, her incredible leadership skills, and the challenges she has had to overcome to give back to the charity.

Magnussen has been raising money for Variety since she was five years old.

She was born with Down Syndrome and other complex heath issues, and has been assisted by Variety since she was young.

Magnussen has raised more than $150,000 for Variety through initiatives such as knitting hats, selling pins and producing and selling her own cookbook.

t’s the end of November and the Salvation Army is dusting off its kettles in preparation for another Christmas campaign.

The initiative kicks off on Friday, Nov. 30, coordinator John Cloke said.

The Salvation Army’s goal this year is to raise $65,000 through the campaign, he said.

Last year the campaign raised $68,000, which was up from the $50,000 it hoped to raise.

Traffic flow is at the top of concerns over plans to open a new Tim Hortons outlet on the corner of 10th Avenue and Redford Street.

The development arose during a presentation of the city advisory planning commission on the matter at council’s Monday night meeting.

The location of the new outlet was formerly the site of a Shell gas station and car wash. The new outlet would have no customer seating and would strictly be for drive-through and pickup, city planner Scott Smith said.

Tim Hortons officials have made a two-pronged application to the city. One is for a fourmetre variance (six metres is required).

The outlet would be closer to the rear yard of a neighbour than is

And an application has been made for a development permit, which includes the form, character, elevation and site plan. The advisory planning commission expressed concerns about how the development would impact traffic safety.

Jack McLeman said the lineups of cars at the existing Tim Hortons that spill out onto Johnston Road at peak times are a sign of things to consider on 10th Avenue.

Coun. Dan Washington advocated for a more diplomatic approach. “We’re being premature,” Washington said. “If we go on we’ll scare them away.”

Council asked the city engineer to look into putting in a median on Redford Street at 10th Avenue.

Councillors then decided to discuss the development proposal more formally at a future meeting.

Volume of domestic violence calls concern RCMP RCMP: | Port Alberni RCMP have responded to 290 calls about relationship violence so far this year, 89 of which have resulted in criminal charges.

Power and control issues and not holidays and money are at the heart of the number of incidents of relationship violence in Port Alberni, says Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society worker Kim Touchie.

At Monday’s city council meeting, RCMP Inspector Mac Richards cited the number of relationship violence calls police have responded to in the Valley up to the end of October.

Richards told councillors that police have responded to 290 relationship violence calls, 89 of which

resulted in criminal charges.

There were 29 incidents of relationship violence in October with 15 of them resulting in criminal charges.

The numbers are pacing those in 2011 where police responded to 335 relationship violence calls and recommended criminal charges in 98

of them.

“That’s almost one new investigation per day,”Richards said.

The violence takes many forms and is mostly between adults and not adults on children, Richards said. The incidents involve husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, and former partners, he added.

particular criminal charge recommended by police, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. “We most often deal with assault, common assault and assault causing bodily harm,” Allan said.

Relationship violence calls present the highest risk for police officers, Allan said. “Oftentimes the person who called will turn on us as soon as we arrest the assailant,” Allan said.

Relationship violence cuts a swath across all socio-cultural demographics well, Allan said. “We attend calls in the fanciest neighbourhoods as well as the lower income ones,” she said.

Richard’s numbers aren’t just statistics in a matrix, said Kim Touchie, who is a victim support worker with Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society. “Each number represents a person,” she said.

Relationship violence follows a cycle, Touchie said.

There’s a buildup of tension over money, jealously or often power and control which erupts into a violent incident.

‘I love you’ and ‘please don’t leave me,’ and then the tension builds into another incident,” Touchie said.

Power and control are central in relationship abuse issues, and rear their heads during the holidays, she added.

Referrals to the organization’s transition house seems to rise not during the holidays but afterward, Touchie said.“Families try hard to make it through Christmas, but things erupt in the new year when the bills come in,” she said. “Abuse can be financial too and not just physical.”

The number of clients Touchie helps has been steady over the past year.

But she sees more women now willing to report the incident to the RCMP and follow through with charges.

“RCMP officers are more sensitive to the

issue and are better able to convince them to charge,” Touchie said.

Lack of affordable housing and few social services for men are key variables in domestic violence issues, Touchie said. Women and children can end up trapped in an abusive relationship when they have few economic options and nowhere else to live that is safe, healthy and affordable, Touchie said.

More men and boys are coming in to ACAWS seeking help for relationship issues but there are few resources available for them, Touchie said. “They don’t want to be like this and they want help. There’s services for women but men are the other half of this,” she said.

Men who enter the court system have access to relationship management resources. “But only if they are charged, convicted and given probation sentences.”

RCMP detachments in other communities have officers dedicated to the relationship violence file, but not in Port Alberni. “This is a real gap in the community,” Touchie said.

he Port Alberni Port Authority has set its short, medium and long term goals, port manager Zoran Knezevic revealed at Monday’s city council meeting.

New on the port authority agenda is an agreement in principle it just negotiated with three major fishing companies, Knezevic said.

The agreement would see the companies use Port Alberni’s waterfront infrastructure as a hub for their fleet of fishing boats.

The agreement is in principle right now so Knezevic was reluctant to name any of the companies just

Mum’s the word from city councillors regarding comments to the BC Liquor Control and Licensing Branch about two proposed liquor licence changes in Port Alberni.

Rusty Anchor Inn owner Chris Ashby is applying to have his business hours extended to 2 a.m., but he says he doesn’t intend to be open that late, city planner Scott Smith said.

Uptown at Carly’s Lounge inside the Beaufort Hotel, the club owner wants to change the floor plan back to the original plan when it was a pool hall.

The initiative will increase its customer capacity from 90 to 140, Smith said.

Councillors chose to make no comment but for ulterior reasons.

The new breakwater has been operational since late summer and further development is planned, Knezevic said.

The port authority plans to add a fuel depot to the north end of the structure and is getting ready to put out a request for proposals for a fuel provider, he added.

Also planned for the pier is a combination coffee shop, fish and chip place once a building is in place.

On the port front, Knezevic said he’s watched with growing concern the number of loaded logging trucks that leave Western Forest Products facilities in Port Alberni for the port in Nanaimo to ship logs.

Fees charged to companies by the

Pacific Pilotage Authority play a role in potential shipping.

“There’s potential for Western to ship directly from here but it has to be cost effective for them,” Knezevic said.

“We’re trying to build a strong business case for them.”

In the medium term, the port authority is waiting to see what happens with the Compliance Coal project, whose officials have declared they will ship coal out of Port Alberni.

“If approved they will be using our port as a gateway and the volume of shipping will increase...we have to plan for that,” Knezevic said.

The initiative will likely take three years or more, he added.

The port authority

also envisions the port becoming a trans-shipment hub.

Ships would pick up containers and ship them to points in the Lower Mainland and Puget Sound, Knezevic said.

The idea has been broached with federal officials, who in turn see initial merit in the plan.

Some industries support the idea as well, he added.

Coun. Jack McLeman asked about the possibility of large pleasure yachts using port facilities.

Knezevic replied that yachts could conceivably use the north side of the breakwater as well as the Somass River side.

“We didn’t go outside of town looking for people,” Lavertu said. He used 12 independent businesses in the Alberni Valley, including West Beaufort Contracting as general contractors.

“What’s ironic is some of them were cheaper than the guys out of town,” he added.

Dogs slaughter goats in Beaver Creek Oickle ‘The dogs weren’t hungry, they were just trying to kill.’

ort Alberni RCMP and animal authorities are on the lookout for a pack of wild dogs that slaughtered a herd of goats in Beaver Creek on the weekend.

The incident happened on Friday on Alberni Valley resident Robert Tolfo’s property near McLean Mill.

Tolfo let his six goats out of their pen to graze that morning.

When he returned at 7 p.m. the goats weren’t waiting for him at the pen like they normally do.

He went to a secondary barn where the goats mingle and found one of them being mauled by a black Rottweiler.

“They all had their throats ripped out.

There were no other markings on them and they weren’t eaten.

The dogs weren’t hungry — they were just out to kill,” Tolfo said.

Tolfo managed to snap a picture of one of the dogs – a black Rottweiler with a chain around its neck, likely denoting an owner, he said.

And the other two dogs are described as being mixed breeds that were brown or tan in colour.

Tolfo feeds his goats and tends to his other animals every day and said he had never seen the dogs before.

“I talked to my neighbours and they don’t recall seeing them either,” he said.

“The dogs are either a wandering pack, or they’re a pack that’s extending its territory.”

Tolfo hopes the pack will be found before they do any other damage.

“There’s other people around here who have livestock.

These things have killed before and they’ll kill again,” he said.

A Port Alberni man who beat another man to death last year after an argument has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for manslaughter.

William David Oickle, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge in Port Alberni Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Oickle’s lawyer Jim Wright sought a 30-month sentence while prosecution sought a 40-month sentence. Judge T. Gouge agreed with the 40-month sentence, Crown prosecutor Christina Proteau said.

Oickle was charged with one count of manslaughter in the death of George Ledrew, 56, in November 2011 in Port Alberni. Oickle appeared before Judge P. McCarthy on March 29 and chose to have a trial by Supreme Court judge and jury with a preliminary inquiry.

Proteau said that in her record of facts read in court, Oickle and Ledrew were both tenants of the Port Alberni Shelter on Eighth Avenue.

The incident started with an argument between the two men inside the shelter.

Ledrew left and instead of leaving things alone Oickle followed him outside and struck him in the face. Ledrew fell, hit his head on the pavement and died.

Oickle attended alcohol treatment over the summer.

“But his alcohol rehabilitation is not a primary concern.

It’s better suited to be done in a controlled institutional environment,” Proteau said.

Oickle was re-arrested in Nanaimo on Nov. 8 after violating probation conditions.

The Crown stayed those charges.

We’re proud of our Angel The poverty of politics in BC continues Angel Magnussen is a pretty amazing young woman.

Since she was five years old, Angel has been raising money “for the kids” for Variety—the Children’s Charity. It’s ironic, really, since she’s faced her own health challenges throughout the years, that all she can think of is helping others.

Angel has raised more than $100,000 for Variety since then, through coin drives and other fundraising endeavours. This past weekend she doubled her total with one cheque presentation.

Angel won the national Scotiabank Game Changers competition and was awarded $100,000 for the charity of her choice during the Grey Cup football game in Toronto.

We also applaud the other seven finalists, who deserve credit for the great things they are doing in their own communities across Canada.

“Angel is amazing,” Variety’s primary executive, Barbie Hislop, said during a television interview this week.

We agree.

The money Angel and her family raised by entering this competition will help 50 families in B.C., Hislop said. All because one young woman—and the parents who support her—won’t take no for an answer.

We are not the only ones who are proud of Angel: throughout the Scotiabank Game Changer contest, she remained in first place due to the number of votes she received from her supporters. In the end, the votes counted for half of her total.

But the other half was all Angel’s doing.

ICTORIA – B.C.’s ritual day of shame over child poverty has come and gone once again, with politicians trading blame and time-worn talking points.

The occasion was an annual gathering staged at the B.C. Teachers’ Federation office in downtown Vancouver.

It is organized by First Call, an umbrella group sponsored by the BCTF, the B.C. Government Employees’ Union and a collection of like-minded “anti-poverty activists,” as they describe themselves in their latest report.

The familiar script unfolded.

The political response was equally predictable.

Veteran NDP MP Libby Davies led the charge in Ottawa. The government must establish a national anti-poverty strategy with firm annual goals, she said, reciting the identical script of the B.C. NDP. Davies didn’t mention that Manitoba is among the provinces with such a plan. It’s the only province that finished below B.C. in the percentage of children living in low-income homes. These plans are mainly gesture politics, providing the appearance of action.

Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux spoke on behalf of the B.C. Liberal government, and she, too, stuck to a familiar script. The best path out of poverty is a job, she said. This is true, but also obvious.

Then Cadieux went on about the “B.C. Jobs Plan,” which has its own sorry record of misrepresented federal statistics.

Affordable relocation an ignored option From/ 10 Here’s one of the report’s more blindingly obvious section headings: “Child poverty concentrated in big cities.”

No kidding. The whole population is concentrated in big cities.

Herein lies a clue that is missed by “activists” for everlarger government.

Poor people are increasingly crowded into the most expensive places.

If I’m on welfare or working in a low-wage job and

receiving a provincial rent subsidy (one of those things LICO doesn’t measure), should I live in downtown Victoria or Vancouver? Shouldn’t I relocate to a smaller community where housing is cheaper?

There are lots of complications to this, but some kind of incentive to relocate could help big and small communities.

Mailbag: Feedback on new high school, PAPA and fed machinations New ADSS an absurd waste To the Editor, In response to the fact that the new Carson Graham secondary School in North Van cost at least $20 million less than the new Alberni District Secondary School, Doug Stewart, Director of Capital Management with the Ministry of Education, told me that the former is only a partial replacement.

However, he refers specifically to “municipal and offsite requirements” for ADSS because the building was “not built on an existing site” as was Carson Graham, leading to the obvious question of why the new ADSS wasn’t built on the site of the old ADSS. Instead a location was chosen which was too small and which has creeks flowing through a swamp, making it not the best site for geothermal heating, to say nothing of putting buildings on top of it.

In my opinion, the Trillium consultants still employed by SD 70 contributed nothing of value to the project.

The old ADSS was deliberately not maintained in its

last years, making the case for its replacement stronger.

And transferring construction to a new site was balmy and irresponsible.

Why the old library isn’t being retained as a new centre for Vast is beyond me.

Also, although it would require a fourth wall, the band room at the rear of the old auditorium was built recently and is in excellent condition.

And, of course, many people in this community favour retaining the old auditorium and its nearly 1,000 seats.

Moreover, the new “neighborhood learning centre” added $9 million to the cost of the new ADSS. A needed addition?

The whole project was a total waste of money and resources during a period in which the province is experiencing a critical shortage of money.

Whose the man at the PAPA? To the Editor, How nice to hear how wonderfull the port authority is and how much we all need them.

Funny how

beauracracies love to grow and become more important.

Notwithstanding, there are three things of interest. What sort of security is in place to prevent smuggling and the shipping in of drugs and dangerous terrorist oriented things? How well are the people vetted that work there?

Are there payoffs, corruption, mysterious containers going here and there?

These are all normal questions one would ask of any isolated port taking in goods and containers from foreign countries.

Second, why all the secrecy? Should unelected persons really have control over an organization that claims to have such a big impact on Port Alberni?

If the impact is that big, then the board ought to be chaired and directed by people who are elected by the local people to keep it in line with community values.

Third, yes the port is an asset and an economic driver; however if it stops proposing and pushing for such harebrained schemes as trucking in coal, and gets a route figured out to take the heavy trucks off our roads,

it would be even more useful and less criticized as a noisy, environmentally deleterious eyesore occupying good waterfront.

Insofar as a place to conveniently strip our forests and sell raw logs, it’s just too bad.

Everyone there was probably bamboozed by the minister of forests’ double talk about raw log exports being needed to provide logs to local sawmills.

Finally, kudos for the port and its economic impact thus far and for its help in waterfront redevelopment, i.e. the quay area.

However, this sort of large federal agency power must be reigned in and locally controlled.

Let’s lobby for a democratic process for representatives, (how much do they get paid anyway?).

Much flash but no substance To the Editor, More than a year ago the BC Liberals bet everything on flash over substance and they are now living with the consequences.

There is an old

saying that those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.

Perhaps the federal Liberal backroom boys on Bay Street are too self-centered to pay attention to British Columbia’s political horse races.

The Liberal Party of Canada is desperate to get back into the winner’s circle and appears absolutely awestruck by their new flamboyant stud.

Their previous two stallions, Stéphane Dion and Michael Ignatieff, also looked good in the paddock, but neither one could go the distance on a no-holds-barred dirt track, especially when the mud started flying.

What experience and accomplishments does Justin Trudeau bring to the field, other than being sired by an incredibly charismatic, freespending ex-prime minister?

The federal Liberals must be ignoring the odds and hoping third time lucky.

In the meantime, those high-priced trainers better teach Trudeau how to keep his French-Canadian hoof out of his mouth.

Another resident, Eileen Unger, said that helping an organization that

helps others is a good cause. “No doubt that the hospital foundation does an excellent job by raising funds for equipment we all might use some day,” she adds.

Muriel Thompson adds: “I had hope that it helped”.

Those in the community who contribute to the hospital foundation receive a quarterly newsletter, which also includes information on the Lifeline services, under the umbrella of the Hospital Foundation and successfully run by manager Sandy Lightfoot.

“This year 12,000 envelopes were mailed. The hospital foundation truly appreciates the cooperation of the Valley’s seniors,” adds Winkler.

Yvette Cowley, also resident of Abbeyfield commented: “For us, to stuff envelopes gives us something to do. Myself, I can’t sit and do nothing, so this is a good opportunity to keep me busy.”

Ben Thomas added: “For me it was lots of fun, but I couldn’t talk too much because I was afraid of losing my concentration while doing the envelopes.”

“This was my second year helping with the envelopes, and I am glad I took part because it is for a good cause,” Nelda Stainbrook said.

Author Mark Vandervelde will read from his children’s book, Pizza for Everyone, this Saturday, Dec. 1 from 1–3 p.m. He will also be selling pizza by the slice to raise money for the Port Alberni Shelter Society.

Story with a conscience Two years ago Port Alberni resident Mark Vandervelde wrote a children’s storybook with a message that is as timely this year as any other year.

The underlying theme for the winter story is about poverty, homelessness and how one man is inspired to do his part to help those less fortunate.

Vandervelde will be reading from his book Pizza for Everyone this Saturday, Dec. 1 from 1–3 p.m. at Curious Coho Books on lower Johnston Road.

Pizza for Everyone

is artfully illustrated and contains magic and fun, but also touches on a little of the reality of those who, the protagonist discovers, are living in an alleyway.

Ben Turner feels compelled to do something, and with the aid of his philanthropic boss he discovers a magic that is deeper than a neverempty pizza box.

“As a father I’ve always recognized the importance of reading to my children when they were very young,” says Vandervelde.

“Christmas has

always been a special time of the year to try and read them something seasonal and meaningful.”

Pizza for Everyone sells for $15 per copy. Vandervelde will donate $2 per copy sold to the Port Alberni Shelter Society.

Panago has donated several pizzas for Vandervelde’s reading on Saturday. Anyone who would like pizza can buy a slice for $1; this will also be donated to the shelter.

The winter night will light up along the Rotary Arts District this Saturday, Dec. 1 during Light Up Your HeART, a new event for the Alberni Valley.

That night at 5 p.m. Rollin Art Centre, local businesses and decorations at Harbour Quay will simultaneously light up the darkness for the holiday season and into the new year.

Rollin Art Centre, Uptown Merchants, Rotary Arts District, the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce and the City of Port Alberni are

combining forces to make the evening magical.

At Rollin Art Centre, arts administrator Melissa Martin says they are “creating an evening of beauty and wonder by celebrating the global symbol of peace and hope: light”. More than 500 lanterns made by local school children, a light labyrinth and imaginative light sculptures will brighten the gardens at the centre.

Timbre! Choir will provide a musical backdrop, Santa will stop in for a visit and local artisans will display their work under a tent on the terrace.

“I am also looking for roaming carolers or any musicians/entertainers who would like to take part,” said Martin. “Either perform in the gazebo, or roam the gardens or Argyle Street.” Festivities start at 3 p.m.

Also at the Rollin Art Centre, the entries for the Rotary Arts District photo contest will be on display and the winners will be announced.

Merchants in the Uptown area have committed to staying open until 7 p.m. Down at Harbour Quay, boaters have been invited to decorate their boats and sail around the Quay from 5–7 p.m.

ECCW returns to Alberni

For the first time in 10 years, Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW) is back in Port Alberni.

And Cremator couldn’t be happier.

Cody Washington, aka Cremator, has helped bring an ECCW card to Port Alberni for this Friday, Nov. 30 at Cherry Creek Hall.

Washington was born and raised in Port Alberni, and when he’s not travelling to Vancouver for matches, he has a regular 9-to-5 job here.

But the six-foot-10 athlete is most at home in the ring.

“We had a really busy schedule. Port Alberni just wasn’t really on the map,” Washington said. “This year we decided 10 years was long enough. It was time to make a comeback.

“It’s going to be nice to finally be able to perform in town in front of my family and friends.”

“Because I’m six-foot-10 and he’s six-foot-eight, it’s a battle of the monsters,” Cremator said.

star Nicole Matthews.

Canadian champion Bishop will face Tony Baroni and Ravenous Randy faces Hellion in other matches.

The card also features a six-man tag team match pitting The Administration (Scotty Mac, Jamie Diaz and Jordie “The Greedfather” Taylor) against BJ Laredo and Scott Steel from Nanaimo and Andy “The Dreadful” Bird.

Tickets for the pro wrestling card are $15 general admission ($18 front row) and available at the door.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m., the bell rings at 8 p.m. Cherry Creek Hall is located at 3720 Moore Rd.

Eremenko traded The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have traded Marc Eremenko to the Olds Grizzlys in return for forward Mitch Makin.

The Bulldogs signed Eremenko in the offseason and he showed strong character coming back from facing much adversity over the last year, head coach and GM Kevin Willison said.

But several defencemen are coming off the injured list; Willison had to make room for Daniel Delbianco, Kurtis Gosselin and Brandon

School wrestlers excel Wrestling teams from Alberni District Secondary School, EJ Dunn and Neill Middle School travelled to Victoria on Saturday to compete at the Island Novice Wrestling Championships. The tournament marks the official start of the school wrestling season.

The novice tourney is intended for athletes who are relatively new to the sport and there are restrictions as to who can compete.

As a result a number of the Alberni wrestlers either did not travel to Victoria or travelled down to referee rather than wrestle.

Coach’s Comment Cowichan Valley Capitals @ Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday, November 30, 2012 @ 7:00pm The Cowichan Valley Capitals come into the Alberni Valley this Friday, one week after beating the Bulldogs 6-2 at “The Stick”. The Capitals outworked the ‘Dogs but the Bulldogs will be looking to build on the effort that saw them come back from a 2-0 deficiate last Saturday again the Grizzlies to win 3-2 in OT. This is the 5th meeting between the two teams. The season series is tied at 2 wins a piece as the Capitals have outscored the ‘Dogs 20-17 in those four games. Look for Evan Tironese and Ryan Lough to have a strong weekend after both are coming off a multi-point performance last Saturday. The Bulldogs will be honouring Angel Magnussen before the start of the game for for being named the Scotiabank National Game Changer at the 100th Grey Cup. This game is the only time in the regular season that Bo Pellah, Evan Anderson, and Turner Popoff will face their former teams. Putting a spike on hunger SUSAN QUINN The Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club hopes to put a spike on hunger with its inaugural food drive on Saturday, Dec. 8 in front of Walmart.

Airborne members will be in front of Walmart from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., hoping to fill the back of a Toyota Tundra with food donations.

Members of the Airborne are girls between the ages of 11 and 16. Coach Julie Anderson said the food drive is designed to be a character builder as well as a community event.

Alberni Toyota has donated the use of the Tundra for the day, and the players will be at the front of Walmart in shifts to accept food donations.

This year the club expects to have three or four teams; up from two last year, Anderson said. The season runs from January to early May. The Airborne play all their games out of town, but practice at AW Neill Middle School and the Alberni Athletic Hall.

They will host the U16 Island championships from April 20–21, 2013. “That’s going to be great volleyball,� Anderson said.

Gold medals for pair of Dunn girls From / B1 EJ Dunn Middle School won the Junior Girls Division.

EJ Dunn was led by the gold medal performances of Kalissa Montgomery (43 kg) and Morgan Dagenais (51 kg), while Mackenzie Boudreau (34 kg), Aleadra Flaro (43 kg), and Kylea Anderson

(51 kg) finished second in their respective weight classes.

“Our girls did an awesome job today.

Morgan and Kalissa are two of the leaders on our team so I was not surprised to see them do well today,” coach Andrew Edgell said.

“Our new Grade 6 wrestlers surprised

me though, competing in their first tournament. We have a great crew of kids coming out to practice at EJ Dunn.”

AW Neill Middle School also had two athletes compete and place in the Junior Girls Division; Teela Johnson won bronze at 46 kilograms.
