Celebrate the holidays on the Peninsula Get in the holiday spirit with local events

W

ith less than a month away until the big day arrives, many Peninsula residents are trying to fit as many of the holiday festivities into their schedule as possible. While it's no easy feat to find time for fun in-between all your holiday shopping, it's important to take that time to really focus on what the holidays are all about: spending time with friends and family. The Semiahmoo Peninsula has many family-friendly events lined up for the holiday season, so take a break from the hustle and bustle and get into the Christmas spirit.

Breakfast with Santa A Peninsula tradition for many years, the White Rock Firefighter's Breakfast with Santa is slated for Dec. 1 at the White Rock Fire Hall, 15315 Pacific Ave., from 8 a.m. to noon. Firefighters will be on-hand serving up a hot and hearty breakfast featuring pancakes, bacon and sausage, as well as coffee and juice. The big man in red will also be at the breakfast, just in case there are some little ones who want to sneak in a photo or a visit. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids. Proceeds benefit local charities and the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.

Santa's Parade of Lights Now in its eighth year, this family favourite takes place Sunday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m., running from the Cloverdale Fairgrounds to town centre. The parade will feature floats, marching bands, antique vehicles and horses, plus an amazing lighted truck parade. Donations will be collected for the Surrey Food Bank and the Surrey Christmas Bureau.

White Rock Farmers' Market For those who missed their local farmers' market, Peninsula producers and artisans are set to return for a special winter market on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Kent Street Activity Centre, 1475 Kent

St. With more than 40 vendors, as well as a selection of crafts, foods, veggies, jams, jellies and preserves, among other items, it's a great place to find a holiday present or just stock up on goodies until the summer season returns. No matter what the reason, the farmers' market is a great way to support local business and producers. Visit www.whiterockfarmersmarket.ca for more information.

Semiahmoo Shopping Centre Shoppers will be treated to lots of festive fun this year at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre, especially the little ones.

Santa is already at home at the Enchanted Garden, so make sure to stop by for a visit. Visits take place daily Monday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Everyone who visits Santa will get a special Christmas apple from his friends at PriceSmart Foods. When he's not hearing the Christmas wishes of the Peninsula's little boys and girls, Santa will be on-hand at Festive Story Time in the Enchanted Garden at 10 a.m. on Nov. 28, Dec. 3, Dec. 5 and Dec. 10. There will also be special › see page 5

HEALTHY & HELPFUL WAYS TO SAY “I LOVE YOU!”

Take Apart Scooter Suzanne Mihaly photo

Deals World has a huge selection of creative DIY gifts.

Handcrafted gifts for the holiday T

here are many ways to give gifts that include a personal touch. Whether you create a piece of jewelry by hand or pick out a piece of art, handcrafted holiday gifts are a great option. Michelle Young, manager at Deals World, said for those who want to start off small, there is the option of creating handmade cards using wooden stamps with holiday designs. "A lot of people come in and get all the items they need to make their holiday cards. It adds a nice touch when people know it's been made by you," she said. Other do-it-yourself options include wreath forms to help guide those who wish to create their own holiday wreath and foam balls to make ornaments. "People have been coming in and buying the balls, then spray-painting them and covering them in the Swarovski crystals we have," Michelle noted.

And if you want to give a gift to someone who has a creative side, Michelle suggested inquiring about the selection of painter's canvases they have. "We've got the big ones that are really hard to find in other places," she said. Other options for a crafty friend or family member include jewelry supplies, felts for arts and hats and wooden boxes that are easy to decorate for storage. If you're looking to make something old look new again, such as a piece of furniture, for a gift this year, Linda Lock of Cottage Living suggests coming by to see the new line of chalk paint she has in store. The paint can transform furniture into something completely new. "It creates that kind of funky, shabby-chic look. Best of all, it goes over anything without any need for sanding, stripping ad finishing. It's so easy," Linda said.

Range of items that add a personal touch › from page 7

Another gift idea that includes a handmade touch are Canadian-made mittens made from recycled woolen sweaters. "They are made by a mom in New Brunswick and there are two or three sweaters per pair. They come in different patterns and are lined with fleece," Linda said. Cottage Living also hosts a number of classes that could be a unique gift for someone looking for a hobby. Classes include cottage painting, cupcake decorating and creating Christmas ornaments. And if you have an art-lover on your list, Linda has many of her pieces – as well as other local artwork – up for sale. Laura at Laura's Fashion Fabrics said there are many different ideas for someone who wants to give a gift they have made themselves. For those who have some knowledge of sewing, sewing a pillowcase or Christmas stocking would be a nice

personalized gift option. Or for those who are more savvy with creating items, Laura noted there are many patterns for clothing, accessories and home decor. For a no-sew project, Laura suggests making a blanket by knotting two pieces of fleece together or using crystals to embellish candles, mirrors or cellphone cases. "Everyone always loves receiving a handmade gift. Both the giver and receiver feel good," she said. If you need a little help before you start your project, Laura's will be hosting a Santa's Elves Workshop on Dec. 2 where staff will teach a number of different projects, including pajama pants, pillowcases, Christmas stockings and ruffled napkins. "If you're new to the sewing, don't overwhelm yourself," Laura said. "The holiday season is stressful enough. Come and see us if you need help, Suzanne Mihaly photo we're always here to answer any sewing Laura from Laura's Fashion Fabrics sews a Christmas stocking. questions."

Gift ideas for the host on your list I

f you have a holiday shopping list that may include a home decor fan, the Peninsula is a great place to go to find the perfect present. At Poshshop in Morgan Crossing, there is a wide selection of unique, imported and locally-made stocking suffers. Owner Ingrid Kandal suggested shoppers come by and take a look at their positive spirit wands, which are a part of their new art gallery collection. "Think Harry Potter goes glamourous. It's a gorgeous gift to give someone you want to send a message of love, health or friendship," she noted. And if there is a specific message you wish to get across, why not take a peek at the affordable and very popular signs at

Ingrid Kandal of Poshshop shares a slew of ideas for home decor gifts this holiday season.

Poshshop, which bear common sayings and quotes to inspire or evoke a smile. For fans of Oprah, there is no better gift than one of the media mogul's favourite things – Corksicles. "It's an icicle you free to chill wine," Kandal explained. A great gift idea for the hostess on your list is the Real Light candles, which feature a flameless candle, so no worries if it's left on for extended periods of time or if it gets knocked over at the dinner table.

Many customers have been coming into the store and creating their own fun gift combinations. "We've had people pairing Hanky Panky undergarments with either Naughty or Nice soy candles," she said. For the men, Ingrid suggests buying a case of Corona beer, taking out two bottles and replacing them with two handblown Corona glasses, made using the entire bottle.

Lights – including LED lights – and wreaths are a great way to tie in your holiday decor with the exterior of your home.

Hemera Technologies photo

Take the festive spirit outdoors H

oliday decorating is far more than the tree. For many on the Peninsula, the holidays are the perfect time to showcase the scents and sights of festive season. Jason VanderMey of West Coast Gardens revealed that the entryway of your home is a great way to start the decorating process. From romantic evergreen wreaths to garlands and boughs of firs, pine, cedar, eucalyptus sparkle berries and much more, the decorative pieces are a treat for the eyes and the nose, Jason said. "Adding the beautiful fragrance of fresh evergreens sets the mood for when your company first arrives to your home," he said. Another great way to add some festive cheer is with lights. Of course, the traditional red and green is a tried and true favourite, but Jason also suggests taking

a look at rice lights. The discreet lights come without the traditional green wire and are LED with two AA batteries. "You won't have to search for plugs that may not be close by. Make sure you find rice lights that have two-inch spacing for the best effect. In general, no matter what your budget is, Jason's main decorating tip is to keep things simple. "Choose a theme and colour scheme to continue throughout your home and take into consideration the colours of your walls, floors and furniture so your holiday decor blends well with its surroundings," he advised. Another tip would be to keep everything balanced throughout the home. Carry the theme from our home's entry to the mantle and even to the tree. "It's nicer to have a little bit of Christmas throughout your home, rather than all

crammed in one corner," Jason said. Finally, make sure you finish what you've started. Don't let the tree be half bare or with lights wrapped around only halfway. If you're going to start something, you might as well finish it, Jason said. "Display your tree in an area where you can show off your new-found talent," he said. Shawneen Esson at Art Knapps suggests transforming your potted planters that you have around the front door by cutting back the existing plants and adding fresh greens, such as evergreens. And for plants of all sizes that you have around the home add glittering lights or a quick hit of colour with Sinamay mesh. "Sinamay is a poly product and it's a glittery ribbon that you can easily put in any outdoor planter. Because it's plastic, › see page 21

it can withstand the winter weather," Shawneen said. "It also reflects light and is a great visual for outdoor decor." A festive wreath is a great way to greet guests during the holiday season. There are many options for people who are looking to add one to their decor, Shawneen said. "We have base wreaths all the way up to the ones that have everything already on them," she said. "If you wish to make your own, we have all the items, including artificial and fresh berries, ribbons, greens and the little birds. You can decorate your wreath as fancy as your Christmas tree." Before you begin decorating, Shawneen suggested looking at different colour schemes that will go with your home to

create a more streamlined and professionally decorated look. As for Christmas lights, Shawneen also noted that LED lights are a great energyefficient way to light up your home. "They have become more aesthetically pleasing and are a great touch to everything from the trees outside to something like a little red wagon that has greens in it," she said. "I've seen people decorate their vintage tractor, an old bicycle or even an old sleigh. It really adds that personal touch." Another unique decorating item would be an ice skate filled with floral and green accents, then hung on a fence or mailbox. Volunteers from Cinemazoo Animal Agency hold two of the resident critters. The agency is always looking for more volunteer help.

Give your time this holiday season G

iving back to the community you live in is a great way to celebrate the holidays. On the Peninsula there are many ways to give back – whether it's volunteering your time at the food bank or spending time with animals who are in need.

Cinemazoo Animal Agency At Cinemazoo Animal Agency, the team provides exotic animals, often rescued from neglectful or abandoned situations, as natural ambassadors for the educational programs they offer. The organization is always looking for volunteers to help with various tasks, from care and feeding to general maintenance, said administrator Sharon Doucette.

"There are lots of things for people to do and we train people to do the jobs that need to be done," she said. "For example, we are looking for people with good public speaking skills to be presenters for our outreach education in schools and festivals and parties." Even for those who do not have a background in animal knowledge, Doucette said the team at Cinemazoo is able to provide that support. Other areas of need include office assistance, she noted. Those who do volunteer not only have the opportunity to interact with animals and the team, but may be able to add a reference for future job hunting, Doucette said. "They also learn good work habits.

Working with animals you have to be very particular and meticulous. You learn to be observant. For the older crowd, it gives them the opportunity to work with animals while broadening their social circle."

Sources Community Resource Centre Sources Community Resource Centre, Community Services Program Manager Sue Sanderson said there are many opportunities for volunteers, including administrative work, the food bank, driving people to healthcare appointments, grocery shopping, preparing hot lunches and visiting isolated people. As Sanderson noted, many volunteers leave with a feeling of accomplishment for helping to improve their community. › see page 25

"Our annual volunteer surveys indicate a great satisfaction with their volunteer roles. Most report that they feel a sense of community when they give back trough volunteerism. They also report that they enjoy the social aspect." To get started on volunteering, Sanderson asks those interested to call 604542-4357 to set up an appointment and look at the different volunteer opportunities available to them, or go to www. sourcesbc.ca–

Foods requested for food bank: n Canned protein such as tuna, salmon, sardines and chicken n Peanut butter with no added sugar n Milk powder n Brown rice n Whole grain pasta n Pasta sauces n Oatmeal with no sugar added, whole flakes are preferred n Legumes such as lentils and other beans with no sugar added n Canned vegetables n Canned fruit and fruit juices with no added sugar n Oil, preferably olive oil n Fresh fruit and vegetables, if they are not extremely perishable.

South Surrey White Rock Hospice The South Surrey White Rock Hospice is always looking for volunteers to help bolster their services. Volunteering options include vigils – providing company to someone at the end of their lives to ensure they are not facing it alone – to baking, volunteering at the thrift store and even decorating. As part of the volunteering process, there is basic training so those who are interested have a good understanding of the work that hospice does and the kind of situations they may be in when assisting hospice, said Executive Director Catherine Ferguson. The wide range of options include tea service for those in Peace Arch Hospital's hospice ward, as well as the recentlyimplemented pet visit program – a great option for those with friendly four-legged

friends, Ferguson noted. "We're all going to be, or have already, been touched by hospice. Volunteers make us a better community," Ferguson said. For those who are interested, the hospice's volunteer co-ordinator Karen Brown is the person to contact. Brown will set up an interview to make sure the volunteering position is a good fit, Ferguson explained. "We want to make sure it's a reward-

ing and fulfilling experience and to make sure our volunteers get a lot out of it," she said. "Most cases, our volunteers get more than they give. We have volunteers who have been with us for 20 years because the work they do is so important and it touches so many people." And as Ferguson noted, the most important thing to remember about volunteering is how one person can make such a difference in the live so many others.

Stay cozy through the winter cold

N

othing helps beat the winter chill more than a pair of warm pajamas. Whether you prefer long johns, flannel or silk, there are many options for sleepwear. At Silhouette Lingerie, owner Fiona Mulligan, said that a popular trend this winter has to be flannel. "We've got a few new ones that are 100 per cent cotton and also have bamboo in them which makes them super soft and breathable," she said. Silhouette also recently brought in a new flannel brand called Frou Frou which features animal print and pink and black accents. "They are so cute and some pieces have a little piece of lace which makes it a bit sexy. The top has lace on the bodice and their is flannel around the tummy area," Fiona said. A new group from Los Angeles that is taking their spin on flannel is Jesse Steel, which Fiona has just brought in. The attention to detail on the flannel will be sure to catch your eye, Fiona noted.

If flannel is not what you have in mind, Fiona said a great idea is a new line of baby-doll style sleepwear from Parfait. "They come in a range of cup sizes, including F and G cup, for those who are more fullbusted." If you're looking for a gift for someone and are not sure what their sizes are, there is also the option of a gift certificate, however Fiona noted that many returning customers' information are in the store's database, making it easy for the staff to help out. "We have the sizes in our computer, so if a husband comes in and wants to look at a beautiful bra and panty set, we can help. It's been a lot of fun the last few years, and it takes out the guess work," Fiona said. Of course, there are always slippers to finish off the look, including boot slippers, that go halfway up the calf and come in a great selection of colours. No matter what the preference is, sleepwear is a wonderful gift for everyone in the family, Fiona said.

Giving the gift of travel M

any of us are already racking our brains trying to figure out what to get the ones we love. There's usually someone on the list that has everything they need, but that doesn't mean that you should give up on finding them something they'll love. There's no doubt that a great vacation is a gift that keeps on giving – especially in memories. But it can be hard to save up for that special trip. This year, why not give someone you love the gift of travel. Whether it's a short weekend getaway or a family vacation to an exotic locale, there are no limits to what you can do. It's also never been easier. Many of the travel companies on the Peninsula provide gift certificates to give as a present. At Marlin travel, the staff creates personalized gift certificates with an amount that can be put towards a trip. "We keep the account on file and create a super worry-free process for the client.

Tropical destinations are always popular.

Everything from travel insurance to all those little details, we can take care of that for you," said Stephanie Owens. The gift of travel is perfect for friends or family members who have recently been engaged, Stephanie notes. "Most couples have lived together for quite a while, so they are pretty estab-

lished. This way, you can help them pay for their amazing honeymoon." And for Airmiles collectors, points can be used towards the gift or clients can use their points to upgrade their package. At White Rock Travel, Ginny Harrison and her team also offer gift certificates to be gifted towards a trip, as well as a website which acts similar to a registry. If there is a golfer in your life that you still need to book for, Ginny notes that now is a great time to look into the Windstar Cruises which feature five rounds of golf at some of Scotland's top courses. For those who want to share a group trip, special rates means a savings of $1,000. Of course, with any vacation, gift or not, it's important to have all your information up-to-date, she added. "Make sure you have your passports, upto-date travel documents and everything else you need when travelling," Ginny said. Christina Chysyk at Bell Travel thinks the gift of travel is one of the most unique

– and exciting – gifts you can give. Best of all, clients can come in, choose their dream holiday and have people pitch in. "We do all types of travel gifts. We have registries for weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays and much more," she said. "The person – or couple – is presented with a card and gift certificate with the names of all contributors and the amounts," Christina said, noting there is a separate list without amounts for more public showings. "We also have gift certificates in any amount that can be given as well and applied to any product we offer with no expiry date, of course." However, Christina notes that if you are booking a pre-paid holiday, make sure that the person you are buying for has a chance to get away and that it is a destination they want to visit. "Not everyone has the same travel tastes and destination dreams. Also, you need to have all of their information as well. Any

change can be very costly in today's strict security world." At Cruise Holidays, Nicky Armstrong and the team offer both gift cards and certificates, as well as a Christmas package for those who book the trip with a deposit. "Giving the gift of a trip is a unique present. Everyone loves to travel. We've never had to refund a gift certificate, that's for sure. We make sure to include lots of brochures to read over the holidays, too." When booking, Nicky noted it's impor-

tant to have your legal names as they are shown on the passport – something that may be overlooked during the holiday rush. Also, ensure you are dealing with an agent who is asking all the right questions to ensure your trip meets all your expectations, she added. "It's important that we know your likes and dislikes, where you've been before and if you've enjoyed it or not," Nicky said. And if you're stuck for ideas, popular destinations include European river cruises, the Baltic and the Mediterranean, Nicky said. Elaine Ross at Uniglobe Travelex and her team offer no-charge personalized gift certificates which can include a specific amount or a specific destination. Best of all, there is no stress about creating a checklist to make sure everything is in order, Elaine said. "There is not much to consider when a gift certificate is done as everything is printed to advise the recipient on what to do," she said.
