Sharp seeks Conservative nomination

A former Kamloops city councillor is the first person to seek the B.C. Conservative Party’s nomination in Kamloops-South Thompson.

Peter Sharp, vice-president of the Conservative’s riding association , announced his intentions on Monday, Nov. 26, saying he has “lost faith” with the Liberals and NDP. Sharp is a retired RCMP officer who served on Kamloops city council for six years before losing his seat in the 2005 election.

He tried twice to regain the seat without success.

Sharp points to two Conservative policies he thinks will resonate with KamloopsSouth Thompson voters: The party’s plans to scrap the provincial carbon tax and its pledge to put more funding into the backlogged court system.

“If you live out of the Lower Mainland — or la la land, or whatever you want to call it — as you move further north, you pay more for carbon tax than anyone else,” he said, “because we use more fuel, we drive further distances, we have to use more heating during the winter months and, as a result, we pay more than our share of the carbon tax.”

Though recent polls have shown declining support for the B.C. Conservatives (an Angus-Reid poll conducted last week pegged support at 12 per cent, the party’s lowest level in about a year), Sharp said there’s still time for a rally.

He also downplayed party infighting, which led to the expulsion of a number of members earlier this fall.

“It’s not the only party with problems,”

he said, pointing to the B.C. Liberals’ riding association in Abbotsford-South, where the president and other members of the board resigned after a candidate was appointed by higher-ups in the party.

Sharp is expected to face at least one other challenger for the Kamloops-South Thompson nomination.

Al Forseth, regional director for the Conservatives, said another candidate will likely make an official announcement in the coming days. He said the riding association in Kamloops-North Thompson is also meeting with “a number of people.”

Nomination meetings for both ridings are expected in early February.

Forseth said that’s still enough time for the Conservative nominees to run solid campaigns.

Sharp said he’s not concerned about having less time to campaign than Liberal candidate Todd Stone or the NDP’s Tom Friedman.

“I believe that Todd Stone has some catching up to do because, while he lives in the area, he’s not as well known,” Sharp said. “And, so he’s, out there now hitting the stumps.”

The BC Coroners Service is investigating the weekend death of a 24-year-old Kamloops man at Sun Peaks Resort.

Nick Guido died early in the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 25, after he crashed into a metal support of a ski chairlift while sledding down a hill on a crazy carpet earlier that day.

Guido attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help school before graduating from NorKam secondary in 2005. He was a student at Thompson Rivers University, majoring in accounting.

BC Ambulance Service confirmed it responded to a 911 call at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, and that Guido was in critical condition. He was taken to Royal Inland Hospital.

Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine said he was told emergency services were summoned to “an injury at the bottom on the slope” and that the person was unconscious.

Raine said he was told the person was still breathing when the ambulance left for the hospital.

The rural detachment of the RCMP is investigating the accident.

This is not the first time tragedy has hit the Guido family.

In February 2004, Guido’s brother Josh, 17, was one of two teens killed when an 85-year-old driver went through a red light on Tranquille Road and hit five teens in the crosswalk as they headed to nearby Bert Edwards elementary to play basketball.

Guido was the father of a two-year-old daughter with his girlfriend, Savannah Dakers.

He is also survived by his parents, Joan and Peter, brother Nathan and sister Tessa.

OW MANY medical marijuana growops are there in the City of Kamloops?

City of Kamloops staff are hoping a new set of regulations to be discussed at today’s (Nov. 27) council meeting will shed some light on a murky system.

As of Oct. 12, 26,222 people across the country are licensed to grow marijuana for themselves or others through Health Canada’s marijuana medical-access program.

Of that number, 11,486 live in B.C., which boasts the highest share of production licences in the country.

A licence allows its holder to grow pot for up to two people — either themselves and another person, or two other medical-marijuana users.

City planner Maren Luciani said if two licence-holders team up at a property to cultivate for four people, a growop can run to 200 plants or more.

Under Health Canada’s medicalmarijuana regulations, those planning on setting up a grow operation in Kamloops should let the city know of their intentions, Luciani said.

But, it doesn’t often happen.

“People get their licence and, when they get their authorization package in the mail, there’s a disclaimer that says you have to abide by local and provincial regulations as well, or something to that effect,” she said.

Canada doesn’t follow up to make sure producers are abiding by the rules.

Because of confidentiality issues, Health Canada doesn’t release the locations of medical marijuana grow-ops.

“One could pop up and what municipalities are finding — and Kamloops is no different

— is right now, we’re finding out about them usually based on a complaint,” she said.

Luciani said proposed Kamloops regulations have a couple of goals: Getting growops out of residential neighbourhoods and clarifying what is expected of growers who want to set up shop in Kamloops.

Under the proposed regulations, medicalmarijuana production would be limited to either properties zoned for industrial use or those with industrial or agricultural zoning.

Of the two options, staff prefer the former.

Luciani said the city has received complaints from neighbours about the impact of residential grow-ops — and it’s a worry that’s not unique to Kamloops.

“There’s certainly aspects that create considerable nuisance to the neighbours,” Surrey Fire Chief Len Garris told KTW. “It’s usually the pungent odours and the smell. And, there are some concerns about security and they’re concerned about grow rips or the criminal element that may just come by and take it away from them.

“And, those things occur. They’re also concerned about fires because most of these locations don’t receive building or electrical permits or those types of things for the safety features.”

Under Surrey’s bylaw 17410, adopted in 2011, residents seeking to grow medical marijuana must apply for a licence to grow — and a “personal-consumption” licence if they’re also planning to use the fruits of their labours.

In order to obtain city permission, would-be growers need to submit detailed floor and ventilation plans, a security plan that includes the use of a monitored alarm system, a declaration they won’t use pesticides in cultivation, and so on.

Once the licence is granted, the bylaw notes, building and health inspectors are allowed to enter the grow-op “at all reasonable times.”

There are also lot-size restrictions, intended to restrict grow-ops to agricultural land, but Garris said it’s difficult to get a grow-op to move once it is established.

To date, he said, Surrey’s restrictions haven’t moved one of the estimated 50 residential grow-operations in the city out of homes.

They have had more success, however, getting them out of other locations deemed unsuitable — strip malls, for instance.

If neighbours complain about a grow-op in a residence, the fire department will typically order an electrical inspection as a first step.

“And, under that basis, there has been some situations where we’ve basically disconnected power or also

asked them to cease until they’ve been able to bring it into known safety regulations,” he said.

Garris said the approach is working.

The number of growop-related fires to which his department responds

is down to about three per year.

In 2005, it was more like one per month.

Garris said he would recommend regulation to other communities, but said it needs to be balanced and sensitive to varying situations.

“I know there’s a lot of sensitivity in regards to the medical aspect in terms of pain management and pain medication and this initiative is not to address that, and it doesn’t have a position on that,” he said.

“The position is about public safety and the safety of the homes that are being used to cultivate marijuana, whether that’s appropriate or not.”

In addition to banning medical grow-ops in residential areas, the proposed Kamloops regulations would also require growers to obtain a building permit, file a ventilation plan with the city and inform staff of any “discharges to air, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, streams or groundwater” that would result.

It would also ban grow-ops from operating within 150 metres of a residential neighbourhood or any space catering to those under 18, such as schools and playgrounds.

Luciani said the building-permit requirement itself isn’t new.

Because the grow-ops would be operating in an area that’s already zoned for them, the permits wouldn’t require council approval.

That’s a relief to local pot activist Carl Anderson.

Early this year, Anderson appeared before city council, asking for permission to use a commercial space as a medical-marijuana grow-op without the public hearing that would normally accompany the process.

“I didn’t want to announce to the whole town that I would be growing marijuana at that site,” he said.

“Because that would destroy any potential security.”

Anderson said he’s been wanting to move his operation out of his residence for years, noting the regulations would give him the privacy he requires.

“I think it’s a good move by the city planners and, hopefully, city council will agree,” he said.

Anderson isn’t sure how other people who grow medical marijuana in the city will react to the possible changes, since renting warehouse space on industrial land can be expensive.

But, he suggested, if medical users in Kamloops pool their resources, the setup could become more affordable.

Not covered under the proposed regulations are marijuana dispensaries, though other communities have bylaws banning them outright.

Luciani said because those aren’t allowed under Health Canada’s current regulations, the city isn’t addressing the issue at this time.

Family devastated by death of mother in forest RCMP Victims Services are helping a Kamloops family following the tragic death of their mother on the weekend.

The 42-year-old Aberdeen resident was killed in the Lac Le Jeune area south of Kamloops when a tree being cut by her husband fell on her.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25.

Police say the accident took place on an secondary forest-service road 11.5 kilometres up Lac Le Jeune Forest Service Road. There were no other people reported in the area at the time.

Police accompanied the 47-year-old husband to the family home, where he had to break the news to the couple’s two daughters.

Three seriously hurt in highway crash Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a serious crash on the Coquihalla Highway on Sunday night (Nov. 25) that sent three people to hospital with severe injuries.

Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said a 24-yearold Prince Rupert man driving a 2003 Dodge minivan was injured along with his two passengers, one who sustained critical injuries, when the driver lost control and rolled the vehicle in the northbound lanes of the highway just north of the Inks Lake brake-check station just before 8 p.m.

the crash scene found the minivan was demolished, with large amounts of debris scattered over the roadway, including the van’s engine. Evidence gathered at the scene indicated the van skidded off the highway, hit an embankment and rolled.

Driver in fatal crash was banned from driving Valerie Brook was killed while in crosswalk

Pedestrians deserve better protection Editor: On Nov. 21, Valerie Brook was struck and killed while crossing Victoria Street and Sixth Avenue in the crosswalk.

My heart goes out to the Brook family during this very sad time.

Often I, too, am a pedestrian and, let me tell you, I am vigilant.

There have been many times that I have come so close to being hit.

So many drivers disregard the rules of road and this makes me feel, as a pedestrian, vulnerable and angry.

In some cases, I have had to basically run for my life.

A good example would be the Fortune Drive and Sydney Avenue intersection in North Kamloops, one of the worst intersections my family and I have had to endure on a daily basis.

When it is my time to cross the intersection, the pedestrian signal is clearly visible and I am clearly visible — yet the left-turning traffic is in my crosswalk.

So, in response to Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned’s comment online at kamloopsthisweek.com that “in theory, there

should never be a pedestrian and vehicle it the same space at the same time” is exactly that — in theory!

There is not enough time to cross the intersection in a safe manner, especially for the elderly and the physically challenged, and there should be some kind of a delay to prevent left-turning traffic from turning at the same time a pedestrian is crossing the road.

When a 2,000-pound motor vehicle is coming at you, what recourse do you have?

I don’t know the circumstances as to why the driver who hit and killed Brook is prohibited from driving, but I do know we need tougher laws against drivers who blatantly disregard and violate traffic laws.

We also need to revisit our trafficcontrol systems.

Perhaps some changes can be made to give the pedestrian a fair chance at survival.

However, even if all these changes take place, these unnecessary tragedies will continue until attitudes of bad drivers change.

The driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a woman in downtown Kamloops this week was banned from driving at the time of the fatal collision.

Valerie Brook, 67, of Kamloops., died on Wednesday, Nov. 21, after she was struck by a 2002 Ford F-150 truck while she was crossing Victoria Street at Sixth Avenue in the crosswalk. The accident occurred at about 5:25 p.m.

Kamloops RCMP say Brook was struck by the truck, which was making a left turn onto Victoria from Sixth.

The driver of the truck is a 62 year-old Kamloops man who police say is banned from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act. Brook was pronounced dead upon arrival at Royal Inland Hospital.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the intersection is controlled by both traffic and pedestriancrossing lights.

“In theory, there should never be a pedestrian and a vehicle in the same space at the same time,” he said.

Police and the BC Coroners Service are now investigating and witnesses to the crash who have not

spoken to the RCMP are asked to contact Const. Mackenzie of the Kamloops RCMP Traffic Section.

Police impounded the truck and are conducting a mechanical inspection as part of their investigation.

RCMP collision analysts were also at the scene of the accident and the truck driver was interview by police before being released.

Learned said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

RCMP will recom-

mend charges of driving while prohibited and failing to yield for a pedestrian under the provincial Motor Vehicle Act. Criminal charges may also be laid once the investigation into the collision is complete.

Cats are cooler than dogs — and they have eight more lives

AST WEEK (AND, IT seems, the week before that and the week before that and the week before that . . . ) city council went to the dogs, proving yet again why it’s preferable to own a cat.

The city has a bylaw that limits per-household ownership to two dogs.

(Although, in reading the city’s Dog Responsibility and Control Bylaw, perhaps a crafty lawyer could make the argument three dogs are indeed permitted. The bylaw states: “ . . . If you have more than 2 dogs you can apply to Council for a variance to have more than 3 dogs or a combination with other animals for a total of 4 animals.” It states if one has more than two dogs, one can apply to have more than three dogs.

Does that infer one need not apply to have three dogs?)

In any event, the bylaw has created some rough times for canine owners in Kamloops this year since council has, for this calendar year only, decided to waive the normally non-refundable $350 fee to ask for permission to own more than two dogs.

As a result, city council meetings in the cramped chambers down at city hall have often been dominated by lengthy appeals from dog owners, pleading for one reason or another for permission to keep a third or fourth dog.

Interestingly, while the focus has been on the two-dog bylaw,

MUSINGS the city’s animal-control bylaw also limits the number of cats per home to two.

That would likely be a surprise to the half-dozen felines and their owners in numerous homes in Kamloops, likely because cat registration — as opposed to dog registration — is voluntary and carries with it a one-time $40 fee per animal.

Dogs, on the other hand, must be registered, with the owners required to pay a yearly fee ranging from $60 to $200, depending on whether the dog is neutered, considered a dangerous mutt, etc.

Tearful appeals at city hall for more dogs has also led to marathon council meetings.

If there’s anything on earth that need not be longer, it’s Grey Cup half-time shows and city-council meetings.

So, to spare the lives of poor reporters who cover city hall, perhaps those pleading for permission to have an extra dog will consider crossing to the dark side and

embrace a feline.

Why? Well, because cats are cooler than dogs and superior in so many ways.

Don’t believe me?

That’s fine.

I give you evidence as put forth by the Secret Society of Cat People, which has a website that describes why cats are better than dogs.

These include: • Cats smell better than dogs.

• Cats are funnier than dogs.

• Even the loudest cat is quieter than the most-relaxed dog.

• Cats are natural insect repellents.

• Cats don’t need to be walked.

• The purr of a cat is preferable to the pant of a dog. Purring is, hands-down, the best sound in the animal kingdom.

• Cats, from the moment of birth, are smart enough to know where to go to the bathroom without creating a mess on the rug.

I would add one more reason — because cats don’t lead to insanely long council meetings with more anguish and emotion than the Sunday Night Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie — but I wouldn’t want to offend the city’s dog owners.

The numbers are in and they are worth toasting: 104 deaths have been averted by B.C.’s tough drinking-and driving laws that came into force two years ago, according to recent government statistics, and a new survey suggests fewer drunk drivers are getting behind the wheel.

(You can read the story on the statistics by turning to page A26 of today’s newspaper).

According to the data released, the number of alcohol-related motor-vehicle deaths dropped 46 per cent, to an average of 62 a year, down from about 114, and 60 per cent fewer driver were found to be over the Criminal Code threshold of .08 per cent in a voluntary survey.

What’s more, the survey results showed that levels of drinking and driving were the lowest recorded since 1995.

People are aware of the tougher drunk-driving laws and they seem to abide by them, making the roads safer for everyone.

Of course, even the toughest laws imaginable will not eliminate drunk drivers altogether.

Just this past weekend, a minivan travelling north of the Coquihalla Highway south of Kamloops slid off the road, creating a terrible wreck that sent all three occupants to hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses came across the carnage, noting the van seemed to have disintegrated as it crashed.

Worse still, police believe alcohol use on the part of the driver may have contributed to the crash.

The statistics are encouraging, but, as the weekend crash indicates, tough laws will not affect some drivers.

Glaring error in road maintenance Editor: On Tuesday, Nov. 20, my daughter was on her way from Heffley Lake to Thompson Rivers University.

She left Heffley Lake at 7 a.m.

The previous day and early evening, it had been raining on and off and temperatures were slightly above freezing.

During the night, temperatures dropped below freezing.

The road was not sanded — not even on corners.

At the Edwards Creek S-turn, just past the Knouff Lake turnoff, the road was glare ice and my daughter did a 180-degree spin in her vehicle and almost went over a 20-foot embankment.

She got a ride home and I went back down to the car with her.

By that time, there had been a serious accident.

Miraculously, no one was seriously hurt or killed, but both vehicles were written off, with damages of about $80,000.

One occupant of one of the vehicles had a suspected broken wrist and a little boy was badly shaken up.

I was there for more than two hours, waiting for a tow truck and flaggers, and had plenty of time to ponder the situation while getting information from all involved, including a local resident who had gone to the Heffley Creek Store earlier, at 6:45 a.m., and had

observed the poor condition of the road.

Even the first of two school buses travelled the road prior to sanding.

When the Argo Road Maintenance representative arrived to make notes, I couldn’t help but ask him why this had happened. Argo has maintained this stretch of road for quite some time and I was quite curious.

His response?

“Well, we got our spotters out all night and, if he went through here at midnight or whatever and it was fine then, well, what are we supposed to do?”

Hey, I’m not in the road-maintenance business, but I would maybe look at my thermometer, which was somewhere close to 0 C or lower, and look at the wet road and maybe look at the clouds blowing away (indicating it may/ probably get colder) and, if so, then the outcome is very predictable — glare-ice road conditions.

Worst case scenario for Argo is wasted sand.

What’s that cost — $400 or $500?

In my opinion, this is gross negligence.

We have lived at Heffley Lake for more than 18 years and know it is a dangerous road and many drivers go too fast, but the above situation should not be acceptable.

Editor: The host committee for the Tim Hortons Brier extends its gratitude to everyone in Kamloops for their overwhelming enthusiasm in response to the announcement that curling’s most prestigious championship will be returning to Interior Savings Centre from March 1 to March 9, 2014.

We are already receiving inquiries regarding ticket sales and volunteer registration, demonstrating once again the city’s ever-present sense of community spirit.

As for blasts and ensuing dust, let me reassure you that dust is minimal These blasts are taken very seriously from environmental and safety points of view.

We are given daily information regarding blasts in our morning safety meetings and we are then given the one-hour blast before it happens.

At this time, all equipment and people in the blast circle are moved to a safety zone.

We are not allowed to return until the command is given that all is safe to resume work. Water trucks are then employed for dust control.

As for dust, we all know Kamloops is in a semi-arid des-

ert climate and, with our prevailing winds, we will have dust.

Our beautiful city is built on glacial till.

Once disturbed, it turns into a powder almost impossible to eliminate. Whether you are building a house or a large project, dust will occur.

The spin-off from Ajax will create needed benefits for existing business and create lots of opportunities for huge economic growth in our city.

It is a volatile world out there and we are prepared to stop an extremely economic opportunity? Why? It’s there in our hands. There are issues to work out and they will be worked out.

Kamloops miner votes ‘yes’ to Ajax; benefits are ‘huge Editor: I have spent the last threeplus years of my life in the mining industry and I have read countless articles, both pro and con, regarding the proposed Ajax mine.

Environmental issues would be a great concern and so they should be; however, government rules and laws are strictly enforced.

If there is a spill of any kind, it is deal with immediately. All equipment carries spill kits and a dam is built around the spill, a soaking pad immediately put in place and the spill is then covered by a layer of anti-spill eliminator.

The debris, including the dirt, is then removed and placed in hazardous-waste containers.

Israel guilty of committing war crimes in Gaza Editor: I read with interest KTW’s Nov. 20 editorial (‘There are no ‘right’ sides in this mess’) and I was somewhat perplexed.

I don’t understand why the media in general continues to paint what is happening in Gaza as a fair fight with two equal sides.

It is nothing of the kind.

Israel is an occupying power and, according to the Geneva Conventions, it has a responsibility to protect the people of Gaza.

As an occupied people, the Palestinians have a right to resist the occupation.

Let’s look at the balance in terms of power.

Palestinians have no army to speak of, no air force or air defence, no navy, no tanks, no artillery and, apart from a few homemade rockets, not much with which to counter the Israeli onslaught.

The Gaza Strip has been described as the world’s largest open-air prison camp, with Israel in control of what goes in and what goes out — kind of like the Warsaw Ghetto.

This latest assault on the people of Gaza is a violation of pretty much every international law, not to mention the Geneva Conventions.

The Israeli army has so far murdered and injured hundreds, mostly children.

The population of Gaza is 50 per cent children so, when you start bombing an area as densely populated as Gaza, you are inevitably going to kill lots of kids.

Is that OK with you? Is this current Israeli assault on a

prison camp OK with you?

There are not two sides here.

There is an overwhelmingly superior force that holds all the cards, attacking a group of people packed into a very small area with virtually no

defence and who, by the way, the attacking force is supposed to be, by law, protecting.

So, all you lawabiding citizens think Israel has a unilateral right to break the law?

The last time this happened, we saw 1.400 Palestinians killed, compared to 13 Israelis.

That’s a 100:1 ratio.

In whose math book is that equal?

We should be deeply ashamed that our pathetic excuse for a prime minister, Stephen Harper, continues to ignore Israeli war crimes no matter how heinous. I wonder if he knows there also Christian Palestinians being slaughtered.

Zoos and wildlife parks play a role in educating the public about the natural world. Injured animals that cannot be rereleased into the wild live out compromised existences in these facilities.

Caring might not make Hamilton an expert, but not caring doesn’t make Bass an expert, either.

Spirit Bears, for example, do not live in “the massive tundra of the north.” They live in the coastal rainforest.

Might we not consider alternatives to the blackand-white (pun intentional) bear vs. human “cold reality” postulated

by Bass? They do exist, in Whistler, in Churchill and in many other Canadian communities.

Inglis asks Blazer fans to give him a chance

Whether his actions corroborate his words remains to be seen. “Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet,� Inglis said with a laugh. “I heard that I stole a car one time. I heard that I stabbed somebody and I was in jail. “If you really want to get to know Charles Inglis, come and have a conversation with me.�

That’s exactly what KTW did last week, just a few days after the Kamloops Blazers acquired the controversial forward from the Red Deer Rebels via trade.

Inglis left both the Saskatoon Blades and the Prince George Cougars on less-thanamicable terms, with many believing the now20-year-old forward is disruptive in the dressing room.

When Rebels’ owner and general manger Brent Sutter fired Jesse Wallin and took over his post behind the Red Deer bench, he sent Inglis home to Saskatoon to await a trade.

the only real place where I had some troubles. “In PG, I’ve never had a coach like Dean [Clark] and never had a GM like Dallas [Thompson].� “I found out that other teams wanted to trade for me last year. I wasn’t supposed to tell anybody. I told my stall buddy Brock Hirsch and somehow it leaked out to Dean. “I got pulled out of every leadership meeting.

I got the ‘A’ ripped off my jersey. From there, things just went sour.�

“I knew that would get me traded without asking for a trade. I didn’t want to have that label.�

The drama did not stop there, Inglis said. “I was treated unfairly. Even when they sent me home, I remember Dallas gave me my stuff in a garbage bag and he didn’t even give me all my stuff. “He gave me my shoulder pads, but wouldn’t even give me my skates. “He didn’t give me any money to go home.

because he was going to put me on an 18-hour bus ride.�

Some believe Sutter sent Inglis packing because of his effect on dressing-room chemistry. “For some reason, Brent Sutter thought that was the deal in Red Deer,� said Inglis, who has lived on his own since he was 17, working two jobs in the summer to pay the bills. “There were three players that didn’t really seem to like me. “When I talked to the rest of the team, they said, ‘We’re not on their page. We’re on your page, Charles. We’ll follow you into battle.’�

Inglis said he learned from his mistakes and focused on remaining disciplined on and off the ice in Red Deer.

Wallin went to bat for Inglis, telling Kamloops GM Craig Bonner the gritty forward would be a good fit in the Tournament Capital.

Blazer fans have every right to worry about the new addition’s reputation for being divisive in the room.

Kamloops (20-6-1-1) sits atop the WHL with 42 points and has earned its standing as a championship contender.

Inglis was brought in to improve that standing.

Focus on portion size, consider a doggy-bag

OW MANY of us grew up hearing “finish what’s on your plate”?

Ultimately, it kills our ability to stop when we’re full.

If my son takes something on his plate, I’ve suggested he finish it, but it’s more about learning to take a small amount first and then deciding if you’re really hungry before you take more.

I would prefer he doesn’t waste the food.

We are always happy to put it in single-serving containers, label it

I grew up having to finish entire restaurant meals as well because it was a waste of money

and food to leave it on the plate.

I’m not sure why we didn’t ask for a container and take the rest home.

Now, I love huge restaurant meals because I know I’ll get to eat it for lunch and dinner the next day.

Or, I can share it with someone and actually have room for a shared treat — if it’s a special occasion.

It’s the worst feeling to walk away stuffed, knowing that I’ve completely overdone it and probably consumed twice the recommended

calories for the day.

The other thing I’ve changed is not forcing myself to eat something I don’t like.

We’ve all ordered something and been less-than excited about the flavour.

Or, maybe I like part of the plate and not something else.

It’s rare. I usually know what I will like, so I don’t feel bad if the odd time I leave something for the garbage that just wasn’t worth the calories.

It comes down to listening to my body, being intuitive and

contemplating before I shift to autopilot and consume an entire plate of something I don’t enjoy.

It’s something I have to constantly remind myself.

Even if it relates to sets and reps for exercise.

It doesn’t matter what it is. Just because someone suggests it doesn’t mean it’s best for me. I make my own decisions.

As a fitness instructor, I see participants who don’t listen to their bodies.

How many times

Whether we’re paying attention to how certain foods make us feel or how we feel when we don’t get enough sleep or hydration, our bodies will tell us what works.

We just have to force our minds to take note.

Imagine riding your bike 60 kilometres, the distance from Kamloops to Chase.

Seems challenging.

Kamloops will host the 2013 BC Seniors Games from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, 2013.

The city is expecting about 3,500 athletes, ages 55 and up, to attend the Games, which will feature more than 20 events, ranging from cribbage to ice hockey.

KTW continues its biweekly feature page, with each page focusing on one of the Games’ events.

Now add in the fact this is a race.

This is just one of the cycling events numerous contestants over the age of 55 take part in at the BC Seniors Games.

“It’s very physically demanding,” said Gary Hunt. “You have to get used to the physical discomfort of pushing your body.”

Hunt, 66, is the B.C. Seniors Games cycling coordinator for Zone 8.

This is his first year as co-ordinator, but he became involved in cycling a few years ago.

“I originally got involved because of the interest my son has in it.”

Hunt had owned a mountain bike for four years when, in the summer 2009, he and his son went out to watch some of the bike races.

His son — and, later, Hunt himself — fell in love with the sport.

Not long after, Hunt bought himself a aluminium-frame racing bike and, since 2009, he has competed in numerous races.

“The competition is fun and it’s great that you get to compete against people in your own age category,” he said. “And, it just makes for a good social atmosphere.”

Within the Games, there are three different race types that take place over three days.

The first is a 16-kilometre flat course, which is a time trial. The second is a road race in which riders race from 40 to 60 kilometres, depending on their age and gender. The third is the hill climb, which is two to three kilometres in length and has a grade of between six and nine per cent.

“The hill climb is steep enough to be challenging,” Hunt said.

Although the sport is very physically demanding, Hunt noted the commitment pays off, especially at the Games.

“It satisfies two goals,” said Hunt, who rides four to five days a week. “Getting medals and being healthy.”

In addition to participating in the Games, Hunt is also president of the Interior Grasslands Cycling Club.

“We don’t just race. It’s also a social riding club.”

During the season, club members rides leisurely on Sundays and competitively on Thursdays.

ICBC, union reach tentative deal The Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union, Local 378 (COPE 378) and BC Hydro have reached a tentative agreement, subject to ratification by COPE 378’s members at BC Hydro.

The tentative agreement contains an overall four per cent wage increase, staggered throughout the two years of the collective agreement.

The collective agreement covers April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2014.

The union’s bargaining committee is recommending ratification to its members.

“I’m pleased we were able to keep the concessions the employer tabled during bargaining out of the collective agreement,” said COPE 378 vice-president Gwenne Farrell.

Greens want candidates to make Ajax the issue

B.C.’s Green party is on the hunt for Kamloops candidates who want to make the proposed Ajax mine an issue in the upcoming provincial election.

Party leader Jane Sterk told KTW she has had letters from a number of local voters who are concerned the copper and gold mine proposed for south of Aberdeen isn’t going to garner enough attention in the leadup to the May 14, 2013, vote.

“They want to know what the Green party’s position is,” she said.

“We could take a position but, if we don’t have a candidate, that means it’s unlikely to get into the election discussion.”

Sterk said the Green party doesn’t support Ajax’s construction, arguing the project has too many drawbacks to conform to the party’s mining policy.

“It’s right within the city limits, it’s a pretty massive project, it has implications for water resources and waste management that are probably not easily met within the city itself,” she said.

While the Greens have a small following in the Kamloops area, Sterk said prior membership isn’t a condition for running here.

“We have a lot of people that are applying to be candidates that are essentially joining at the same time as they apply,” she said.

“They learn about the Green-party policy and say , ‘Wow, that fits with me’.”

In the past two provincial elections, the party has picked up about seven per cent of the votes in both the KamloopsSouth Thompson and Kamloops-North Thompson ridings.

But, Sterk said, there’s still a chance for a Green candidate to pull out a win here.

“Who knows what might happen in this election?” she said.

“It might be a transformative moment where people say, ‘I want somebody that wants to see change happen’.”

The Green and B.C. Conservative candidates will have much less time to get their names out than their B.C. Liberal and B.C. NDP counterparts.

Tom Friedman and Kathy Kendall, running for the NDP in the south and north respectively, were

nominated in the summer of 2011.

Science centre, Bert Edwards school set world record The Bert Edwards Science and Technology School and the Big Little Science Centre will be in the next edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

In October, the school and science centre took part in a cross-Canada attempt to set a world record for “largest simultaneous practical science lesson in multiple venues; same time and same lesson.”

The experiments involved performing and observing how materials react to the movement of fluids, following Bernoulli’s Principle.

Students did two different experiments.

They first predicted what would happen and they then performed the experiments to observe what really happened.

The first experiment involved blowing between two bal-

loons held about 10 centimetres apart.

The second experiment involved blowing through a drinking straw, straight across the top of another straw standing upright in water.

Organized by the federal government, the record attempt involved 85 Bert Edwards students in grades 4, 5 and 6, along with teachers Rob Wielgoz, Mr. Bloom, Mrs. Villeneuve, Mr. Wagner, Ms. Shelton-Lawson and Ms. Mauro.

Community volunteers who assisted, included Bill Quast, Carol Paulsen, Rae Nixon, Lloyd Nixon, Irene Desrocher, Matt Reudink and David Green.

Ministry creates data warehouse online

A tree or two are safer now as the province’s Ministry of Environment moves much of its data onto the Internet.

Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal MLA Terry Lake, who is also minister of environment, introduced the new website, env.gov.bc.ca/ soe, in a classroom at Thompson Rivers University on Monday, Nov. 26, holding just one of the 350-page reports the innovation will now replace.

Lake said as the man who oversees the environment in B.C., taking steps to reduce the amount of paper his ministry generates is important.

The site has many areas, including tabs for sustainability, waste, marine, plants and animals, water, air, climate change and contaminants.

Within each tab are reports, trends, interactive maps and myriad other information, including links to the raw data generating the reports, something TRU dean of science Tom Dickinson said will be invaluable

to students.

For example, one of the tabs Lake took his audience through addressed wildlife management — specifically, the grizzly bear.

Dickinson said years ago, he was teaching a course on wildlife management “and I spent days and days researching grizzlies and, even then, missed a lot of information.

“So, a resource like this, as comprehensive and open as it is, will be great for teaching science.”

The comprehensiveness and access to raw data will also appeal to students, Dickinson said, “who can go in and do their own analyses.”

A press release accompanying the demonstration noted the move to an online site is part of the government’s open-data policy.

Hikers found with help of flashlights Flashlight signals helped Kamloops firefighters find three Kamloops residents who became stuck in rough terrain past Kamloops Airport.

Two men in their early 20s and a 16-year-old girl were rescued after the father of one of the trio reported the group overdue from a planned hike in the hills north of Cinnamon Ridge on Sunday night.

Kamloops Search and Rescue went to the area, in the 4000-block of Tranquille Road, where Kamloops firefighters were already working to rescue the hikers, whom they found by using flashlight signals.

Two firefighters used ropes to make their way into the steep and rough terrain rescue the hikers, who were driven home by the father who make the original call.

From sidewalk to stretcher in bizarre crash

A 25 year-old Kamloops was taken to hospital after an elderly driver jumped the curb in front of London Drugs on Lansdowne Street at about noon on Thursday, Nov. 22, pinning him to ground.

Matt O’Neill, who was manning a Salvation Army kettle in front of the downtown Kamloops store, said the driver of an older-model grey Buick appeared to be in the process of straightening his car in a handicapped-parking stall in front of the drugstore.

But, when the car drove forward into the space, it kept going up onto the sidewalk.

RCMP said the car then struck a handicapped-parking sign, which in turn knocked over the pedestrian.

“He just kept com-

ing forward, no brakes, came right up over the curb and pinned a young guy who was walking on the sidewalk

right against the post, pinning his left leg,” O’Neill said.

“He didn’t stop at all until he pinned

the guy.”

When the car backed out, O’Neill attempted to help the man on the ground.

O’Neill said the experience isn’t one he wants to repeat while he’s on Salvation Army kettle duty this holiday season.

“I’ve seen some interesting things doing this, but not that. And, I don’t want to see it again.”

Drunk driving deaths down for second year

B.C.’s toughened roadside penalties on drinking drivers are being credited for cutting alcohol-related crash deaths for a second straight year.

The province estimates 104 lives have been saved since the immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) system took effect in September 2010.

That’s based on a drop from an average of

114 impaired fatalities prior to the new rules to 66 in the first full year of the IRP program and 58 in the second year.

Provincial government officials say the initiative has drastically changed British Columbian attitudes to drinking and getting behind the wheel.

“As you drive home late at night, the car coming toward you is far less likely to be piloted by an impaired driver than at any time in recent years,” Justice

Minister Shirley Bond said.

She said B.C. is so far averaging a 46 per cent drop in drunk driving fatalities – better than a target of 35 per cent set in 2010 in honour of impaired driving victim Alexa Middelaer.

The roadside penalties can result in licence suspensions, vehicle impoundments and can cost drivers $600 to $4,000 in administrative penalties and remedial program costs.

The new approach

has also meant a major shift away from criminal prosecution of suspected impaired drivers, which consumes much police investigation and court time.

A June survey of drivers in five communities (Vancouver, Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George and Saanich) found the lowest levels of drinking and driving ever recorded in a series of similar surveys dating back to 1995.

Survey says cyber-bullying has victims in B.C. About 23 per cent of B.C. teens have been victims of cyber-bullying, according to a new survey of parents.

The online poll of 504 B.C. adults by West-6S Marketing found widespread concern about cyber-bullying, with 89 per cent very or somewhat concerned.

Eight per cent of adults surveyed also said they’ve been cyber-bullied and that rose to 12 per cent among heavy users of Facebook or Twitter.

VERYONE KNOWS RALPHIE PARKER ONLY WANTS A RED RYDER BB GUN FOR CHRISTMAS. It has to be the one with a compass in the stock and “this thing which tells time.”

(For those who, like me, have never seen the movie A Christmas Story, the kid means a sun dial.)

If there’s one movie that is on many people’s list of favourite Christmas films, it’s this one, a slice of life inspired by the short stories of Jean Shepherd, an American radio personality and author.

It’s also the next play in Western Canada Theatre’s season, a seasonal offering designed for the family.

WCT artistic director Daryl Cloran said beyond his own fondness of the story, he loves the play because it showcases the Stage One Theatre Training Program.

“Almost all of the kids in this show [there are seven] have trained with Terri Runnalls at Stage One,” Cloran said.

“So, they all came into this production with a lot of understanding about acting and experience performing in front of an audience.

And I’m really proud that we’re able to extend their training now by providing them this chance to be on a big stage alongside professional actors.”

Ralphie’s role is filled by Sebastian Tow, a Grade 5 student at Beattie School of the Arts.

It’s not Sebastian’s first appearance with WCT, where his father was artistic director before Cloran.

He appeared as Max in Where the Wild Things Are earlier this year and was in the cast of A Christmas Carol in 2010, when he

played Tiny Tim. Ralphie’s little brother, Randy, is played by Sylar Unser-Kleissen.

Cloran said the six-year-old “is just going to melt the audience’s heart when he hits the stage. He’s missing his two front teeth!

“And, he’s dong an amazing job remembering his lines and his blocking. We’ve built in little hand squeezes and cues from other actors onstage to remind him of his lines but, so far, he doesn’t need them.”

Working with child actors brings a new element of fun to rehearsals, Cloran said.

He is amazed at their dedication, noting they are putting in long, full days.

“The go to school during the day,” he said, “and then rehearse with us on the evenings and weekends.

“The kids are learning so much so quickly. Whenever they get a laugh from us in the audience, they look out proudly at us and I remind them they need to stay in the scene and forget about the audience.”

Rehearsals have been mainly in a small hall but the cast has been up to Sagebrush to work out a stunt.

“As they stood on the big stage and looked out at the 700 seats, their eyes got really wide,” Cloran said of his young actors.

“It was fun to watch them realize how big the audience was going to be and what an incredible opportunity this is.”

That’s not the only fun moment the cast and crew have had during rehearsals.

“There’s a big Santa slide in the show the kids get to ride,” Cloran said.

“We have them jumping into trap doors, shooting Red Ryder air rifles, throwing oatmeal around the stage — it’s a ton of fun for them!

Thom Marriott plays Ralphie’s father — known as The Old Man — while Shane Carty is the older Ralphie, narrator of the tale in the movie.

Marriott is a veteran of the Shaw and Stratford festival theatres in Ontario.

Carty has also worked with the Stratford Festival, as well as the Neptune Theatre, The National Arts Centre, Grand Theatre London, The Thousand Islands Playhouse, The Weston Playhouse and

many others.

The play opens on Thursday, Nov. 29, for previews, with the official opening night on Saturday, Dec. 1.

It continues to Saturday, Dec. 8.

Texas singer-songwriter Carrie Elkin is in Kamloops this week for a concert in a downtown home, part of the Home Routes series of performances that matches travelling musicians with private hosts.

Somewhere in a Kamloops home tomorrow night (Nov. 28), people will gather for a special reason.

They’ll be there for a concert.

Not the kind of musical event one might think of — this is one of the Home Route performances that match willing homeowners with travelling musicians for an intimate, up-closeand-personal music experience.

This one features Austin, Tex., singersongwriter Carrie Elkin.

Elkin’s on the road making her way up to the Interior from similar shows on the Coast and doesn’t have her cellphone on very often, so KTW interviewed her through email.

They sent me home so I would be in familiar surroundings when my ¿nal breath was taken.

Being as that I was only 20 years old, I had no intention of dying. One day I wandered into a health food store in my hometown and explained my story to the woman working. After a few tears and a heartfelt hug from her she showed me Strauss Heartdrops. I began as directed and continued to increase my dosage until I was taking 2.5ml/3x a day. After 6 months I began to be able to go for walks without seeing stars. The feeling like someone was standing on my chest started to subside. I remember the ¿rst time I fell asleep on my back - it was a small miracle because before it had felt like I was drowning.

Singing grounded, freed Elkin X From B3

The one thing that was always part of my life, regardless of my job, was singing.

It took me a while to truly understand the significance of music in my life.

But, really, it just hit me one day.

I remember being on stage and feeling incredibly grounded and also free at the same time.

It felt natural and I loved connecting with people on that level.

After that moment, I never turned back. I simply took the music route 100 per cent.

It was so exciting and a bit scary, but I have a firm belief that, when we’re being true to ourselves, we’re taken care of in many different ways.

• Do you do just original material or any covers?

I play almost all original music.

On occasion, I’ll throw in a Bob Dylan tune or an old gospel number but, for the most part, it’s all my own songs.

• Who are your

musical influences?

Well, I’ve always loved the great songwriters like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.

But, I’ve also been quite influenced by great singers, especially harmony vocalists like Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, the Beach Boys.

• How did you connect with Home Routes and what do you think of the concept?

My significant other, Danny Schmidt, is also a full-time touring musician.

He did a Home Routes tour last year and suggested to the very kind folks in charge over there that they have me for a tour, as well.

The connection was made through Danny and I’m so thankful for that.

Everyone has been so kind.

It’s a brilliant concept and one that I hope continues for many years to come.

It really gives artists a unique opportunity to become part of many different communities on a very intimate

level.

I love it artistically and personally.

It’s growthful in a different way than playing big festivals and art centres.

Sitting down and really getting to know folks is a pretty special thing.

• What would one expect at a Carrie Elkin concert?

I’ve been singing my whole life, so I’d say the show is vocally focused.

I love the writing and playing aspect, too, and I put a lot of time and energy into my art.

But, lately, I’ve truly enjoyed storytelling, as the road is full of so many exciting adventures.

The show is a mix

of folk/Americana music and storytelling all in one.

• Anything else you might want to add?

I’d just like to reiterate the importance of Home Routes on a cultural level.

They do an incredible job choosing their artists and their vision is pure.

They simply want to connect communities with artists and artists with communities and they understand the importance of this connection.

I’d also like to add that the hosts are doing a wonderful job, too.

It’s a true labour of love to be a concert host.

Singer’s goal is to have some laughs

Chad Brownlee is one of those rare prohockey players who negotiated his own trade — not to another team but onto the country-music scene.

With the success of his 2009 single, The Best That I Can (Superhero), it’s fair to say the transition was a success, as Brownlee was honoured with the Rising Star Award at the 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards.

His 2012 album, Love Me or Leave Me, was released on Feb. 14 and the title-track hit No. 9 on Canadian radio.

The second single, Smoke in the Rain, enjoyed 10 weeks on Canada Singles Top 100.

“I think this one kind of almost made itself,” Brownlee said of his new album.

“Creativity is really unexplainable and you just have to trust the process.”

He credits his independent label, MDM Recordings Inc. (founded by Mike Denney in 2008), for being supportive in the creative process.

Brownlee has been playing music almost all his life, drawing inspiration from an array of musicians like Garth Brooks,

“I just think their songwriting is fantastic,” he said.

Brownlee will be bringing his brand of country music to Kamloops on Friday, Nov. 30, co-headlining with fellow musician Dallas Smith for their sold-out Boys of Fall Tour at the Kamloops Convention centre.

“We sort of blended our bands together,” Brownlee said, “like one band with two lead singers.”

He is excited about touring Canada.

“The fans really make the show and you are there to entertain and to give them a good time.”

Though he’s been playing for a while, he still feels pre-show jitters.

“When I played hockey, I got nervous

before every game.”

Brownlee said.

“It kind of builds up your adrenaline and gets you psyched up.

“I’m just a regular guy who sings and plays songs” Brownlee said.

Road feels good to Xzibit as he brings tour to B.C.

When he takes to the stage at Cactus Jack’s tomorrow (Nov. 28), it will be Xzibit’s first time performing in Kamloops.

No, the legendary West Coast rapper with the distinctive gravelly flow has never rocked the mic in the Tournament Capital.

But, make no mistake, Mr. X to the Z has plenty of love for Canada — and B.C. in particular.

That’s why the 38-year-old decided to head north of the border to start touring to promote the new album Napalm, his first since 2006.

“Canada’s always been a good market for me,” Xzibit told KTW on the phone from Regina — “The Canadian city that rhymes with fun,”

Xzibit’s affinity for Canada goes further than selling records, too.

“I’ve been here a few times [not for work],” he said.

“I’ve been fishing for sturgeon in Chilliwack. I like it up there.”

Born in Detroit, Xzibit moved to New Mexico when he was 10

and then on to California at 17.

That means any tolerance he once had for sub-zero temperatures and roadside snowdrifts has long since melted.

While it’s cold outside on Xzibit’s cross-Canada Collateral Damage tour, the shows, he said, have been hot.

“You should expect to see a little bit of the classic material, a little

bit of the new material,” he h said. id “Most of all, you’re gonna see me. I’m coming 100 per cent — and it’s good to be back.”

With no shortage of hits in his rear-view mirror, Xzibit said he thinks Napalm is his best record yet.

“I think I kind of create music from the standpoint, ‘What would

He was involved in two songs on Dr. Dre’s 2001 and appeared in hits like Snoop Dogg’s Bitch Please and Warren G’s 1999 single Game Don’t Wait — the latter two also featuring legendary West Coast baritone Nate Dogg, who

died in March 2011.

Xzibit said he is honouring Nate Dogg on the Napalm tour.

“You gotta come see,” he said.

“I definitely feel like we lost a big part of the West Coast when Nate Dogg passed away.”

The collaborations continue on Napalm, which features Wiz Khalifa, RBX and Tha Alkaholiks — a group Xzibit was a part of in the late-1990s.

The second single on Napalm is Up Out The Way, which features Yay Area rapper E-40, who has arguably gained as much notoriety for his made-up slang words as he has for his lengthy hip-hop career.

Surprisingly, Xzibit said he had no trouble speaking E-40’s language when collaborat-

ing on Up Out The Way. “You can understand him perfectly,” he said.

“That’s E-40’s world, that’s his lane. I just think it’s dope he finds the creative space to do that — to say, ‘This word’s not good enough, I’m gonna make up my own word’.”

Overall, Xzibit said, he expects fans to like what they hear on Napalm.

“I’m very proud of the clarity, the maturity,” he said.

“This is a great representation of where I am as an artist.”

And, as for being back out on the road promoting an album?

“It feels good,” he said.

“It feels like a homecoming — like what I’m supposed to be doing.

“This is what I do.”

A six-speed automatic is standard with both engines but there is a six-speed manual available on the turbo only.

Both versions are front-drive, but I bet Buick is working on an all-wheel-drive version as we speak, because buyers in this segment are gravitating increasingly in that direction.

The Verano feels firmly planted and gives off the expected Buick sense of solidity.

The turbo starts almost silently.

That’s partly due to the muffled running nature of turbos, but largely to Buick’s QuietTuning that involves 12 noisereduction and noisecancelling measures including: 5.4-mmthick acoustic-laminated windshield and 4.85-mm-thick acoustic laminated side glass that minimizes wind

noise; acoustic insulation material on both sides of the front steel dash panel and under the hood that reduce engine noise; and five layers of acoustic insulation material in the headliner, including a premium fabric on the visible outer layer that muffles wind noise.

They got rid of tire noise by using three layers of acoustic insulation material in the doors.

The leather version is fitted with a ninespeaker Bose Premium Sound System, which I could hear a whole lot better, thanks to the all the external noise reduction.

When cold, there is a slight lag in acceleration, which goes away as soon as you pass 2,000 r.p.m.

Once heated up, the turbo responds almost instantly.

Part of that is due to the twin-scroll technology but also to the turbo intercooler that cools air intake by almost 100 C. The colder the air, the denser the charge and the most power released at ignition.

At the dawn of the passenger-car turbo era in the mid-1980s, it was not uncommon for the driver to count to three between the time he/ she hit the pedal and the power came in.

And, when it did, it came in all at once.

This turbo lag was compounded by torque steer which occurred when one half-shaft was shorter than the other causing the shorter one to have more grip and track the car off centre, sometimes drastically so.

But, with experience in superior engineering and the above is just a bad memory for those of us who experienced it.

The Verano turbo launches nicely off the line with standard traction control and stability control doing their part, resulting in no wheel spin or crabbing to the left or right.

At highway speeds, the turbo comes into play immediately for passing or lane changes with no drama and,

Thompson Rivers University awarded close to a half-million dollars to students at its Annual Foundation Awards Ceremony on Nov. 22.

In total, $474,600 was given out as bursaries and scholarships to 497 students at the ceremony.

“For 30 years, the TRU Foundation has been supporting students and the university,” TRU Foundation board member Les Consenheim said.

“During this time, the foundation through the generosity of our donors has built an endowment portfolio for student assistance of $11.4 million dollars. Last year the Foundation raised $3.2 million dollars for students, buildings and programs at TRU.” Although Nov. 22 event is the university’s largest award ceremony, it is not the only one.

Awards are handed out throughout the year at several smaller ceremonies, including one on Dec. 13 at TRU’s campus in Williams Lake.

GORDON IAN BREMNER January 8, 1931 – November 20, 2012 Gordon passed away peacefully at home with Gaile and “Licorice” by his side.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife Gaile and many nieces and nephews in BC, Alberta and Australia. The last of his family, Gordon was predeceased by his parents David and Jessie Bremner and his ten brothers and sisters. Gordon was born in North Bend BC and in the same year the family moved to Kamloops where Gordon has resided since. Gordon worked for C.P. Rail for 38 ½ years and upon retirement he spent many happy days on the lakes fly fishing with his pals. During the winter months, he enjoyed his hobby of fly tying.

Many thanks to all his coffee pals at A & W and Tim Horton’s, also to Ralph Humphreys, the Ebatas, Pat Stallard, Wes & Deana Stankoven and everyone who has been such a support to Gordon and I. I would like to express my love and gratitude to Dr. J. Wiedrick and Johanna as well as Joanne Lippert of Hospice.

GUST STANKOVEN February 10, 1934 – November 18, 2012 Gus Stankoven passed away peacefully at Kamloops Hospice on Sunday, Nov. 18th, 2012 at the age of 78 years surrounded by the love of his family. Gus was born on February 10th, 1934 in Drumheller, Alta. and was raised there until graduation in 1952. He came to Revelstoke in September 1952 to work for C.P. Rail as a telegraph operator. He worked the spare board on the Mountain and Shuswap subs until getting a steady job as a telegrapher in 1954. He married Winnifried Goebel on June 2nd, 1956 and worked in Albert Canyon until 1959, after which they moved to Rosebery where he was the station agent. While living there, Gus belonged to the New Denver – Silverton Kinsmen Club, coached Little League Baseball and Minor Hockey. He also played on the New Denver – Silverton Combines Senior Baseball team and Senior Hockey teams. He loved fishing on Slocan Lake and Wilson Creek. After 10 years, the CPR decided to close the branch line between Rosebery and Nakusp due to a lack of business. He turned down a promotion to be a mobile supervisor in Cranbrook because they had already purchased a home in Enderby, where he bid and got the Armstrong-Enderby office swing position.

They moved to Enderby in 1969 and Gus was on city council for 14 years as an alderman, head of the Recreation Commission and put on many events for the Senior Citizens. He also coached Minor Hockey and Little League baseball where his team represented the Okanagan Valley at the Provincial Championship in Whalley. He was also involved with the Grindrod Elks Senior Hockey team and Enderby Legionnaires Senior Ball club and proudly went to the Western Canadian finals. In 1985 while working the Armstrong, Vernon and Sicamous swing, the CPR decided to close the branch line where he managed to get the office swing job in Kamloops. They resided in Kamloops until 1991 when Gus retired after 39 years of service with CP Rail when they closed the station due to technical changes on the railway. While an operator in Kamloops, he also was the First Aid instructor, as well as Defensive Driving Instructor for CP Employees.

In 1992, they moved to a beautiful home in Nakusp on the Arrow Lakes. While there, Gus was president of the Senior Citizens Association for 7 ½ years, was a Senior Counsellor and also gave driving lessons to approximately 120 students and seniors. He was also President of the Nakusp Falcons Senior Hockey team and was also the score/time keeper for Minor Hockey. Gus & Winnie were chosen as Citizens of the Year in 1998.

While living in Nakusp, Gus enjoyed fishing and picking berries. In 2003, they moved back to Kamloops to be closer to family and medical attention. Gus won medals at the Senior Games in table tennis, which he enjoyed playing for many years after. His hobbies included riding his scooter, watching hockey, playing crib, scrabble & circle word games. He loved watching movies and spending time with the family, especially his grandchildren.

Gus spent time collecting donations for the Salvation Army as a kettle ringer in the malls at Christmas and loved interacting with people. Dad was an unselfish person who loved unconditionally, a friend to everyone, and always willing to help those in need. He devoted his life to being a great husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Special thanks to all of his doctors and nurses along with the volunteers at Hospice for your kindness and compassion.

Gus was predeceased by his parents, step-father and sister, wife Winnie in August 2009 and granddaughter Michelle in February 2012. He is survived by his five children and families: Bill (Lorna) Stankoven of Victoria; Brenda (Dave) Jones of Revelstoke; Larry (Franca) Stankoven of Enderby; Linda (Fred) Iadarola of Kamloops; Wes (Deana) Stankoven of Kamloops; Fifteen grandchildren: Christina (Benjamin) Hernandez, Devin, Brennan & Garrett Stankoven; Amanda & Jeff Jones; Amy (Trevor) Volpatti; Amber (Adam) Brausse; Steven & Samuel Stankoven; Eric, Jenna & Melissa Iadarola; Logan & Macie Stankoven.

BRIAN OLAF OLSON March 21, 1948 to November 21, 2012

Brian Olaf Olson, originally of Thunder Bay, Ontario passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 64 years of age.

Brian is survived by his loving wife Evelyn Olson and children Darren, Lee-Anne, Lynette, Wendy, Brenda and Donna including grandchildren, Tia Rose, Jessie, Christopher, Jeffrey and Tom. Brian is also survived by his brothers Derek (Diana), George (Mary) and sister Elaine (Claudio).

Brian was quite active in the community donating much of his time painting the church he loved and the local hospice till he was no longer able due to his illness. He was also a member of the curling club and an avid golfer.

Brian will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on November 28 at 1:00 pm at the Calvary Community Church.

SHIRLEY BEATRICE WALSH August 31, 1932 ~ November 21, 2012 Shirley Beatrice Walsh passed away peacefully on November 21, 2012, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born on August 31, 1932 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the youngest child and only daughter of William Kidd Best and Florence Beatrice Elizabeth Wootton.

She grew up on a farm near MacDowall, Saskatchewan, until the age of 16, when she moved to Terrace, B.C. with her family.

After many years there, she and her husband moved to Kamloops, where she has lived since 1972.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband Jim, her brothers, William and George and her daughter-in-law Marlene. She is survived by her loving children Linda (Paul), Tom and foster daughters, Barbara and Beverly (Brian); her beloved granddaughters, Catherine, Rachel and Kaylie; brothers Arnold and Clifford and numerous other relatives and friends.

Shirley was a warm and selfless person who took great delight in helping others in any way she could. Her strong faith in God has sustained her through the many hardships and challenges she experienced in her life.

Bunny is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Jim Taylor, her daughter Lynne Kitson (Dave Duncan), sons Greg (Linda) and Perry (Karen). She is also survived by her brothers Alf (Megan), Charlie (Shirley), Gorden, Donald (Daphne) and sister Margaret Rodgers(Gunnar Reinikka). Bunny leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren and a large extended family.

Bunny is predeceased by her parents Alf and Jessie Perry, brother Bob and his wife Alice Perry, grandson Rene Kitson, son-in-law Rene Kitson and grandson Matthew Taylor.

Bunny spent her early years in Kamloops. She married Jim in 1946, and, as a ‘loggers wife’, made various moves throughout B.C. In Prince George Bunny worked at Woodwards and managed an apartment block. They spent 14 years in Vavenby and moved to Clearwater in 2011.

Bunny was dedicated to her family and friends and gave unselfishly to others. As a mom, her love was unconditional. She will always be remembered as a warm and giving person with a magical inner strength.

In 2008 she was honoured as the recipient of the DHMH Hands Award for her dedication to the Vavenby Thrift Shop. Bunny was a volunteer canvasser for the Cancer Society. Always friendly, postive and outgoing, she left her mark on those she met.

Praise for development A Juniper Ridge development is getting praise from Kamloops council for making the neighbourhood more sustainable.

City council has agreed to take the first steps on a development variance for 2049 Highland Dr., to permit a two-storey building on the site.

The mixed-used development, which includes space for professional offices and residential units, was originally planned at 1.5 storeys, but director of development and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski said Fraser Bay Developments Inc. wants to expand the size of the residences.

The variance won’t affect the height of the building, Kwiatkowski said, because the original plan called for a high, peaked roofline that will be leveled out in the new design.

Coun. Ken Christian said the development is “another arrow in the quiver of sustainability for that community” because it will reduce the need for car trips to other neighbourhoods.

“Our area of service stretches approximately from Kamloops to Barriere and Clearwater in the north, to Merritt, Lower Nicola and Spences Bridge in the south, to Chase in the east and to Clinton and Lillooet in the west,” said Lindsay Curry, chair of the Community Council for the branch.

“So, to call us the Kamloops SPCA is a bit of a misnomer. We cover a huge area and we thought that our name should reflect that.”

Branch manager Charleen Holloway agrees.

“Our name is now explicit as to the fact that it’s not just the city of Kamloops that we service,” she said.

“Hopefully, this will clear up any confusion that people may have had and the name now recognizes that the outlying areas are part of this branch.”

The name change takes effect immediately, although the branch will continue to use letterhead and business cards with the old name. “We’re a non-profit society with almost no government funding, so we can’t afford to waste our resources,” Holloway said.

“If you get a card or correspondence from us in the next little while, it will be in the old name. Once we’re ready to order new supplies, we’ll make sure the name is updated.”
