Cranbrook Downtown Lightup and Parade Community spirit is alive and well with the Santa Claus Parade We live in a world where technological advances have allowed us to communicate over small and vast distances in an instant. Text messaging, sending photos or videos or the ability to research just about anything at the touch of an icon. But this interconnectedness doesn’t necessarily mean togetherness. As a matter of fact, numerous studies have shown that people are feeling even more isolated than ever from their communities. A walk through a local coffee shop proves this point as patrons

Cranbrook middleschool student, Jelena Jensen, is challenging the students of Cranbrook to collect pennies, to help children around the world. She is organizing a penny drive throughout the city and is conﬁdent Cranbrook students can collect 1,000,000 pennies or $10,000. Jelena got the idea when she attended We Day in Calgary last month with her uncle, Chad Jensen. We Day is an event created to empower youth to make a difference in the world. That’s when she learned that $25 is enough to provide one person in a developing country with a permanent source of clean water, for life. “That really struck me,” said Jelena. “There is a water bottle vending machine at my school. For $25 I can buy myself 17 bottles of water, or for $25 I can provide clean, safe drinking water to a person who really needs that, and change their life. Many girls can’t go to school because they have to spend so many hours walking to get water for their family. I love school and I want to help other children so they can go to school too. Everyone deserves to have clean drinking water that won’t make them sick.” So 12-year-old Jelena is leading We Create Change – Cranbrook, in conjunction with Free The Children and the We Create Change campaign made possible by RBC. The campaign supports Free The Chil-

dren’s year-long Water Initiative to provide 100,000 people with permanent sources of clean water. Free The Children, supported by RBC, has embarked on what it hopes will be Canada’s largest penny drive, calling on all students to create change by providing a powerful send-off to the Canadian penny, which will soon be going out of circulation. “Growing up, I’m sure I wasn’t alone in having a piggy bank filled with pennies and loose change, so why not use this change to help make real change possible,” said Craig Kielburger, co-Founder, Free The Children. “Free The Children is going back to basics this year with a penny drive, and thanks to RBC, it is now easier than ever to make your cents count. For the first time, no rolling or counting needed. Just pick up a bag, fill it and drop it off at your local RBC branch and we’ll take care of the rest.” Free The Children has sent Jelena a large supply of official We Create Change penny bags and in just the past week, she has collected enough change to fill 20 bags. When one bag is filled, it equals $25 – enough to provide one person with a permanent source of clean water. Jelena hopes that together, the students of Cranbrook can fill 400 bags – that’s 1,000,000 pennies, $10,000, and positive change in the lives of 400 people. Jelena has just begun speaking to groups to promote the campaign and she wants

Overall: The only way to get seating for up to seven people in the Kia line also has an available V6 and offroad capability. Drivetrain: Two four-cylinder engines and an available V6; all-wheel-drive is an option. The Sorento remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-rowseating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. The only other model where it can be added is the EX V6 Luxury as an extra-cost option.

Overall: Think of the Durango as an extended-length version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with room for seven passengers across three rows of seats. Drivetrain: A 3.6-litre V6, found on most Chrysler-brand vehicles, makes 290 horsepower, while a 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is the obvious choice when towing and heavy hauling are called for. The Durango abandoned its old-school body-on-frame construction used on earlier versions, but that hasn’t discouraged buyers from selecting it for various work and recreational tasks. Plus its macho exterior leaves the impression that it dines on Ford Explorers or Chevrolet Traverses anytime it wants. The big “D” has been designed off the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s

unitized (frameless) platform. signers who penned the GC’s interior also created the Durango’s interior, comfort and roominess are also ﬁrst rate. Along with four-wheel-drive, Durango options include a system that signals you when another vehicle is about to overtake or is traveling in your blind spot(s). Another system alerts you when cross trafﬁc is approaching from behind as you’re backing out of a parking stall. Dodge also brags that the Durango’s big fuel tank allows you to travel up to 800 kilometres without making a pit stop . . . for fuel, that is. For 2013, the SXT can be ordered with a Rallye Appearance Group that comes with 20-inch polished wheels, black-bezel headlamps and body-coloured cladding and sill moldings.

The Flu Vaccine Boogie

It is that time of year again when the drum beat for getting a flu vaccine is in full swing. This year it continues to make headlines as there is a call for health care practitioners to get the flu vaccine or risk not working. Let’s consider some facts. There are over 200 viruses that cause influenza and “influenza-like” illnesses. Both diseases share the same set of symptoms (fever, headache, aches and pains, cough and runny nose) and it is impossible to tell the difference between the two without specific laboratory testing that is rarely done. At best, flu vaccines are somewhat effective against only influenza A and B, which make up about 10% of all circulating viruses each year. Influenza viruses do not cause “Influenza-like” illness at all. Influenzalike illness is caused by a variety of other viruses and bacteria that do not respond to influenza vaccination. Under average conditions where the flu vaccine for any given year partially matches the dominant

strain of circulating influenza, 100 people need to be vaccinated to prevent one person from getting the flu. When you look at large populations of people given the flu vaccine and you compare them to large populations who do not get the flu vaccine we see the following: no difference in the number of people hospitalized with flu-like symptoms, no difference in doctors visits by patients reporting flu-like symptoms, and no difference in days or school or work missed due to flulike symptoms. In short, it doesn’t matter if you get the flu vaccine or not, your odds of getting flulike symptoms remains the same. Fifteen of the 36 trials studied to come to the above conclusion were funded by vaccine companies and so it is possible that even these dismal results are optimistic because company-sponsored vaccine trials tend to produce results that suggest the vaccine is more effective that it actually is.
