Submitted Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett announced today that Cabinet has approved the incorporation of Jumbo as a mountain resort municipality. A municipal council has been appointed for a term ending Nov. 30, 2014, and an interim corporate officer has also been named and will serve until the first council meeting of the new municipality. Appointed as Jumbo’s first mayor and councillors are Greg Deck, Nancy Hugunin and Steve Ostrander. Phil Taylor will be the interim corporate officer, ensuring that the municipality is operational by its incorporation date of Feb. 19, 2013.
Jumbo Glacier Resort’s Master Development Agreement was approved in March 2012, following a 20year review process and extensive consultation that informed and developed the Environmental Assessment Certificate, Resort Master Plan and Master Development Agreement. In 2009, the Regional District of East Kootenay requested that the B.C. government incorporate Jumbo as a mountain resort municipality. In May 2012, government amended the Local Government Act to clarify provincial authority to incorporate a mountain resort municipality whether or not there are residents in the area at the time of incorporation. The announcement

onstrated by the BC government towards our spiritual beliefs and the foundations of our culture,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair. “We have clearly and consistently indicated that if this resort is built, it will critically damage our religious rights and freedoms, as well as our aboriginal rights, all of which are recognized by the Canadian Constitution.” The Ktunaxa Nation had already planned a rally to take place on November 30th in Cranbrook, which coincides with the official filing of the application for judicial review of the approval of the controversial resort. The rally will start at the new Ktunaxa Government Building in downtown Cranbrook at noon, and a march will proceed to the Courthouse where the court proceedings are expected to take place.

was met with criticism from Columbia RiverRevelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald and from the Ktunaxa Nation Chair. “I’ve not spoken to anyone outside the B.C. Liberal party who thinks that this legislation makes sense,” said Macdonald. “To create a town where there are no residents, to appoint a council that may never face election, and do this with no real possibility that a resort will be built is ridiculous. But a small group of Jumbo supporters are getting their way on this one: transferring control of public lands into private hands.” Macdonald said the timing of the announcement is also suspect. Even as the Ktunaxa are continuing to fight the resort in court, the Liberals are trying to ram the development through by early 2013. “This once again shows the disdain dem-

No number may be used in the same block more than once.

port from our donors, we have helped Interior Health bring the best in breast cancer care imaging to the East Kootenay way ahead of schedule,” said Donna Grainger, Executive Director for East Kootenay Founda-
tion for Health. With digital mammography, the breast image is captured using a special electronic X-ray detector that converts the X-ray image into a digital image, which is available for immediate review on a computer monitor. The digital
Friday, November 23, 2012 Kootenay News Advertiser mammogram is stored in a computer archive and is available for viewing from any location in Interior Health with electronic archive access, either within the hospital or from the referring doctor’s office. The magnification, brightness, and contrast

of the image may be manipulated after the exam is complete to improve the image quality and visibility of some lesions, improving sensitivity for finding an abnormality. Digital mammography is more efficient than traditional X-ray, re-
duces radiation dose and provides more information particularly in the setting of dense breast tissue. This gives a better chance of detecting breast cancer. “The new digital mammography equipment allows EKRH to offer patients state of the art
breast imaging. The addition of stereotactic biopsy capabilities fills the last need missing locally. We are so happy to now be able to offer such high quality breast imaging care to regional patients,” said Dr. Julie Nicol, EKRH Radiologist.
The new equipment and technology will also allow EKRH radiologists to do stereotactic core needle biopsies, a less invasive form of biopsy, in Cranbrook. Currently, regional patients have to travel outside the area to access this less invasive procedure.

The Wildhorse Cycling Club spent some time recently working on the Community Forest trails.
Prepping the trails On the weekend of November 16th to November 18th, Wildhorse Cycling Club hosted the International Mountain Bike Associations Trail Crew. The Trail Crew is a team of two instructors who travel across Canada teaching how to build sustainable multiuse trails. On Friday night they presented a workshop on how so run a successful club. The course information was very relevant and will help the club in the future. Saturday there was a three hour classroom session on the theory of building natural surface trail. The club obtained a huge amount of information. Topics ranged from permission from property managers to trail flow and assessment. Identifying user groups and construction methods. The course information will be very useful to the club. The afternoon was
spent in the Community Forest working on a section of trail that benefited from techniques learned in the morning. On Sunday the club went for a group ride to test out the work on the section of trail that had been worked on. All the riders where thrilled with the previous days work. The club also took the trail crew for a tour of the Eager Hills section of the Community Forest. They where amazed at what a treasure we have here. The Club would like to give special thanks to the Community Forest Society for allowing the club a chance to do approved work on a trail in the Community Forest. The club would also like to thank the Recreation Sites and Trails BC for providing an archaeological assessment of the trail to make sure the club did not disturb any archaeological values in the area.

Silent auction raises nearly $2,000 for the EK Foundation for Health Submitted You know him to see him, well except maybe not this Movember with his moustache, but business entrepreneur Joey Hoechsmann is again showing his health care spirit with
the Bedroom’s latest gift to East Kootenay Foundation for Health. Last month Joey and his group of enthusiastic sales team put together a fun evening of Auction Hunters with over $40,000 worth of items up for silent

Why Use a Mortgage Professional There are generally two ways to get a mortgage in Canada: From a bank, or from a licensed mortgage professional. While a bank only offers the products from their particular institution, licensed mortgage professionals send millions of dollars in mortgage business each year to Canada’s largest banks, credit unions, and trust companies … offering their clients more choice, and access to hundreds of mortgage products! As a result, clients benefit from the trust, confidence, and security of knowing they are getting the best mortgage for their needs. Mortgage professionals work for you, and not the banks; therefore, they work in your best interest. From the first consultation to the signing of your mortgage, their services are free. A fee is charged only for the most challenging credit solutions, and it’s especially under those circumstances that a mortgage professional can do for you what your bank cannot. Whether you’re purchasing a home for the first time, taking out equity from your home for investment or pleasure, or your current mortgage is simply up for renewal, it’s important that you are making an educated buying decision with professional unbiased advice.
and live auction. The many pieces of furniture and accessories that sold saw a percentage of every dollar raised given to the regional hospital foundation. At the end of the evening a generous gift of $1,932 made its way to the foundation. These funds are directed to EKFH’s unrestricted fund which allows the foundation’s Board of Directors to determine the area of greatest need. Many times the unrestricted fund is utilized to purchase smaller pieces of medical equipment or patient comforts that normally wouldn’t see any public funding such as larger capital campaigns produce. The Bedroom Furniture Galleries and the
Hoechsmann families continue to provide essential funding for EKFH’s mission to provide funding to assist the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community health care facilities in meeting the needs of the region. Over several decades Fred, Gloria, Joey and Christine have assisted in the purchase of equipment for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s palliative care and pediatrics units, the emergency department and most recently the digital stereotactic mammography campaign. Thank you to the Bedroom Furniture Gallery for being a proud supporter of the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

Meaghan Smith coming to Key City Theatre Showcasing up and coming artists is an important part of building an exciting lineup of artists at the Key City Theatre. Meaghan Smith is no exception when it comes to vibrant Canadian talent. Meaghan Smith is a singer. She has always been a singer. “I feel like I was born into it. I have a very musical family—my mom is a piano teacher and my dad played bass in a rock band when he was younger. There was al-
ways music around, whether it was coming from the piano, from my sisters practicing their instruments, or from the radio.” You may recognize Meaghan’s voice from the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack, where she covered the Pixies song, “Here Comes Your Man” or you may have been following career since the release of her 2011 album, The Cricket’s Orchestra. This release got her the recognition needed to

get her name and voice onto the airwaves of Canadian radio. All the hard work Meaghan put into The Cricket’s Orchestra paid off, winning her the Best Pop Recording of the Year at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards, and winning the 2011 Juno Award for Best New Artist. Her style is referred to as “modern vintage,” with influences from the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40’s.” It has been described as if Bjork worked with K.D. Lang and Doris Day. Meaghan is currently touring her latest release “It Snowed”, bringing her love of the Holidays to Cranbrook. This album was inspired by Meaghan’s love of the season. In her own words, “There’s something about long dark winter nights contrasted with brilliantly sparkling snowy days, or freezing winter air and the comforting heat of an inviting fire. People are thinking of each other, buying gifts for one another or just getting together. It’s the

Show Your Holiday Colours
Green and red have long been the traditional colours of Christmas. Even before Christian times, people used evergreens and brightly coloured berries and apples to celebrate the Yule season. The bright colours symbolize that life still exists, even in the cold and harsh conditions of winter and add a promise that harvest and abundance are just around the corner. Add a splash of gold and you have reference to the sun that will soon be sending us its warming rays again. While many more symbols have been added to the holiday season and decorating styles, green and red are still dominating colours. One plant that combines both and has become a classic symbol of the season is the poinsettia. Native to Central America and Mexico, the poinsettia was first brought to North America in the 1820s as a clipping by Joel Robert Poinsett, an American ambassador to Mexico. Eventually, the brightly coloured plant was named in his honour. It was not until the 1960's, however, that they were grown as potted plants in large numbers and poinsettias reached the popularity they still enjoy today. The natural colour of poinsettias is red and this remains the most popular choice. Thanks to breeding, however, today they are available in white, pink, peach and even yellow and with speckled, marbled and crinkled leaves. The “flowering” part of the poinsettia is in fact not a flower at all, rather, it is made up of a cluster of coloured leaves or bracts. Taking care of already blooming poinsettias throughout the holiday season is quite easy. The greatest danger is over-watering the plant, so a good guideline is to give it a good drink of water once the leaves are just starting to droop. Poinsettias should not be kept in the pretty covers they often get sold in as this can also hinder excess water from draining away from the plant. Poinsettias thrive in temperatures around 20°C and kept away from cold drafts and furnace vents. If the plants are happy, they will reward you with month after month of striking foliage colour. Trying to keep a poinsettia alive to bloom again next holiday season can be a bit of work. The plants have a tendency to get “leggy” while in the house and will need a regular routine throughout the year and at least 14 hours of complete darkness starting in October to have a chance of bringing them into colour for Christmas. One of the plants with the longest history in holiday decorating is the holly. Regarded by the druids of ancient Britain as a sacred plant and used in winter celebrations, the tradition of hanging boughs of holly in the home was adopted by early Christians at Christmas time. The plant is native to North America, Europe and parts of Asia and its size can range from a short shrub to a large tree. While most holly plants are evergreens, there are some deciduous varieties. Holly is marked by its distinctive, deep green and prickly leaves as well as the crimson coloured berries. They might look fantastic, but when ingested, holly berries can cause nausea and stomach aches. The leaves, on the other hand, can be used to make herbal remedies. Holly is often used in decorations, such as wreaths or planters, but just like poinsettias, holly is now available as a small potted plant to brighten up the home during the holiday season. Other unique plants to use in living centrepieces or as accent plants are fragrant rosemary “trees” and miniature pine trees. So you can be modern and creative while staying true to tradition. Till next time... happy decorating, Submitted by Kerstin

Jeannette Oostlander’s 21st solo exhibition of all new original oil paintings will be on display at the Day’s Inn in Cranbrook starting on Friday, November 23. Oostlander said it’s been an exciting year of painting on location and is pleased to show her new series of pleinair paintings as well as a mix of her studio work. “While I was painting up in Jasper, a huge bull elk wandered past. It was just great. My painting didn’t pass my critique though, so that got the old turpentine wash.” said Oostlander. She said she is quite pleased with the rest of the paintings from the Banff/Jasper trip including a very nice one of Bow Lake and a favourite scene created in the studio of the beautiful fall colours near the Columbia Icefields. “I’m also very happy with two garden paintings – one from Susan and Warren’s place and one of the Yellow Bird Magnolia in Tony and Twila’s back yard. Thanks for letting me paint there guys.” Oostlander said she’s got quite a colourful set of paintings and looks forward to showing them off. “You’re invited to drop by and see this year’s colourful work at the Day’s Inn in Cranbrook on Friday November 23 from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

OBITUARY
John Robert MacDonald January 19,1936 - November 19, 2012 It was a major shock to his family and friends when Johnny succumbed to liver cancer one month after his diagnosis. He is survived by his wife Karen; his daughter Christine (Scott) Beattie, granddaughters and grandson Hope, Noa and Fynn Beattie; his son Richard (Kristin) and granddaughters Skylar, Mackenzie and Sierra; brother Gary (Donna) and cousin Lynn Gartside (Richard). He loved skiing, golÀng and spending time at the cabin at Moyie Lake. He particularly loved having coffee with the guys at Arby's. He enjoyed building models and tugboats were his specialty. He loved the many cruises that he and Karen shared as long as it didn't take him away from his beloved cats Katie and Kisa for more that a couple weeks. He was a member of the Cranbrook Masonic Lodge and past president of the Shrine Club. A memorial service for Johnny will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm.
