Opposition would aid municipalities

By Amelia Naismith Leaders of Alberta’s opposition parties addressed a number of issues at the annual Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMC&D) conference, in Edmonton last week.

“Municipalities need a hand up, not a handout,” said Alberta Liberal Leader Raj Sherman.

Although there were disagreements between the three leaders; Sherman, Wildrose leader Danielle Smith, and New Democratic Party leader Brian Mason, they did agree more power needs to be handed to municipal governments.

Smith and Sherman agree provincial revenue needs to be shared by the province with lower levels of government.

When asked about the current municipal taxation structure, Mason said there are limit to resources available to municipalities. He also said a form of revenue sharing is needed.

“In reality everyone has funding problems,” said Sherman. His question was, starting at the highest levels of government, where is the money going when Albertans are working harder than ever.

CAO receives long service award

By Amelia Naismith Ponoka County wouldn’t have the successful CAO it does if the world of banking, in 1976, had been more exciting and stationary. But it wasn’t, leading one man down a long career path in municipal government.

During this year’s Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) convention, Ponoka County CAO Charlie Cutforth received a Long Service Award for 35 years in municipal government.

He received his award Nov. 13, from Doug Griffiths, minister of municipal affairs.

Cutforth said he’s honoured to receive the award and be in the business that long. “I actually feel gratitude that it provided me with a good standard of living for that period of time.”

Not all of Cutforth’s years in municipal government have been in Ponoka. He spent his first three years as a financial controller with Lacombe County, five years in Wetaskiwin County as assistant CAO, and three years as CAO in Athabasca County before coming to Ponoka in 1987.

It all started when Cutforth was in his early 20s. He was working as a credit manager in a Bank of Montreal in Lacombe and had just gotten married.

taxes or levies to aid in reducing deficits.

Alberta has a infrastructure deficit that all the leaders recognized, and Smith said government needs to put a finger on how big the debt is so stable, long-term plans can be created accordingly.

Smith believes there is a need for more funding shared between the levels of government and stopping wasteful spending is part of the answer.

Mason disagreed and doesn’t believe the deficit can be met by cutting expenditures because that limits the means of municipalities.

Striking a balance between industry, people and water was also discussed at the conference. Municipalities, especially in southern Alberta, are having problems accessing water needed for development.

Sherman said his government thinks independent monitoring is needed to enforce that water is being used properly. Fracking, which is already a sensitive subject for Albertans, was also mentioned and Sherman believes fracking could be done with salt water.

Mason took his stance on the matter one step farther.

“A rational use of water needs to be implemented.”

He believes fracking with fresh water should be prohibited, and fracking as a whole needs to be regulated more strongly.

In fracking, water is put back underground and isn’t returned to the system. Smith added there also needs to be better classifications regarding water use so people who are retuning the water to the system aren’t penalized.

Smith also said industrial processes where water is not returned should be reduced.

Other resources, such as land, also need to be managed and developed responsibly.

To manage and integrate different sectors, such as oil and gas and agriculture, long-term planning needs to take place, said Sherman. To do this citizens and industry need to sit at the table together to strike a balance.

More time needs to be taken when planning for the future. “The only way we can support our municipalities, both big and small, is by building and maintaining strong relationships with them,” said Sherman.

God provides refuge from the dark The story is told of a four-year-old who spilled his cola on the rug and wanted to clean up the mess himself.

His mother told him the mop was just outside the back door. Quickly, he ran to the door but realized that it had Jerel Peters become dark outside.

Assuring him, she told him that Jesus is everywhere, even in dark places, and that he’ll always protect him. This put a smile on his face. He opened the door just enough to poke his head outside and called out “Jesus, if you’re out there, could you pass me the mop?”

Many children have found themselves in a predicament of fear when confronted by the darkness of night. We might chuckle at this boy’s understanding of Jesus, but truth be told, when moments of great fear or overwhelming defeat hits us, many of us respond in a similar way. Poking our head into the hardship some ask, “God if you’re out there …”

Or “God if you’re real …”

It seems much of humanity is fine without God, even going to great lengths to remove Him from every area of society but when deep hurts in life arrive, we all hope He is real. We hope He can reach through the darkness, into the pit of our despair, and rescue us.

We love the stories of heroes who rescue and save those in need. From superhero characters to real life stories, it raises in us hope and longing for rescue. We long for the hope that comes with the

The CAO positions he’s held were more Cutforth’s speed. “A guy’s got to have a reason to get up in the morning. The only reason we exist is to try and provide the best service we can to those people who have to pay taxes to get some service.”

Cutforth says as long as he follows that idea and tries to help he’ll be all right.

There are two other rules Cutforth lives by when it come to his job. Rule 1: “When a taxpayer wants something bureaucracy comes to a halt and it’s dealt with.”

Cutforth says he’ll always be honest when it comes to taxpayers and their demands, even if it’s not what they want to hear. “You can’t always please everyone. It’s the nature of the beast.

Rule 2: “When a councillor wants something see Rule 1.”

However, Cutforth says it isn’t just his own ideas that led to his success. “One of the most critical things that has obliviously helped with my success is the terrific people I work with.

Cutforth’s final philosophy is to hire the best people, turn them loose and back them up when they need it.

I don’t literally hide out in my own God-sized castle safe from danger but my trust and dependence upon God gives me hope and confidence, especially when life is not making sense.

Reflections of Ponoka George is a champion and a special friend

By Mike Rainone for the News George is a handsome and lively 8½-year-old male Chesapeake Bay Retriever (or Chessie) who really enjoys his rigorous days of training and exercise sessions out on the acreage with his best friend and owner, Karen Douglass.

The busy sales representative with the Ponoka News purchased her first Chesapeake Bay retriever in 1977 and has been in love with the versatility and gentle spirit of this popular breed of dog ever since.

They began their early casual training sessions when George was just a young puppy and with extreme patience and understanding, Karen slowly taught her buddy how to retrieve various items by hand, to come when called, to walk calmly on a leash, to have fun and achieve so much more together as a team. As the dog got older and matured, he was entered in countless obedience and rally obedience trials throughout Alberta. Showing under his registered name of Wyndham’s Water Wizard (fondly known as George) he later earned the titles of Companion Dog (CD), Rally Excellent (RE) and Canine

Good Citizen (CGN). Along the way he has earned many High In Class honours against various talented breed dogs, taking part in both disciplines. Many of the judges have commented to Karen on George’s happy working attitude, and how quickly he had become an excellent ambassador for the breed.

With most of the retriever competitions taking part in the spring and summer, George and Karen longed to work together in some other activities for the rest of the year. After reading a newspaper article in which our Ponoka hospitals were looking for dogs to visit clients, she figured that with George’s experience, training, and joy of being around people, it was time to open up a new chapter and enroll him as a therapy dog.

What is Therapy Dog’s International?

TDI is a volunteer organization dedicated to regulating, testing and registration of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers for the purpose of visiting nursing homes, hospices, hospitals, and other institutions where therapy dogs are needed and welcomed. The organization was founded in 1978 in New Jersey

and encourages all breeds of dogs, including those with pedigrees, those who have been adopted from shelters, as well as rescued dogs, or just family pets to take part. In 2011 more than 24,000 dogs and their handlers were involved in the program throughout the United States and Canada.

In Camrose George and Karen went through a 3½-hour exam, passing with flying colors, and proudly earning the title of Therapy Dog International (TDI).

This prestigious title is recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club, and the initials are officially added to each dog’s registered name. Each dog earning a TDI also proudly receives a neckerchief, a picture ID name tag, and a tag officially recognizing them as a therapy dog. All dogs taking part in the program have to keep up their regular checkups and vaccinations, while the handler must file a yearly report on their visits.

Since their enrolment in the spring, Karen has taken George for visits to the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre and the Red Deer Hospice, and have really enjoyed these special experiences. Karen explains that George usually decides how long the visits will last, with most being an hour, and that the duration of his participation in this volunteer program will depend on his health and well being. In the meantime you will likely see George and Karen visiting up at the hospital, or

Pet therapy program at Ponoka hospitals Among the many other volunteer programs offered at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre and the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury, the pet visitation program is becoming extremely popular with both residents and staff.

Volunteer resources’ procedure for pet visitation states participation in the program is open to pet owners of domestic adult dogs and cats, caged birds and aquarium fish. All pets joining the program must have proof of immunizations, and all visitations are arranged in advance between the owners and the volunteer resources co-ordinators.

Leanne Brusegard, the volunteer resources co-ordinator at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre currently has three dogs and their owners involved in their pet visitation program, and she would like to encourage others from the town and county to take part. These pets and their owners work closely with the hospital staffs, striving to give each resident who are able to and wish to take part an enjoyable and healthy experience.

Interaction with the visiting pets on most occasions has shown happy and uplifting responses, along with a few hugs, gentle petting, and lots of shake-a-paws. Many of the residents just like to sit quietly with their new four-legged friends, who they really look forward to seeing each week.

Other year-round volunteer programs featured at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre include: Golden Spoons feeding assistance, youth volunteers (12 years old and over), the water cart and movie nights. Those interested in taking part or requiring more information on the pet visitation or other volunteer programs at the hospital are urged to get in touch with Leanne Brusegard at 403-704-8312, or leave a message if necessary.

One of the greatest experiences of a lifetime is to become a volunteer, and wherever your talents, your time, and your caring efforts may be served, you will always be appreciated by those who might need just a little extra support and kindness.

Opinion Gaza: Is this another pre-election war?

There does seem to be some sort of pattern here, but it is not very consistent.

Five times in Israel since 1980 a right-wing government has called an election without launching a complementary military operation. The right lost two of those elections outright (1992, 1999), more or less tied two others (1984, 1988), and won only one decisively (2006).

On the other hand, three times since 1980 rightwing Israeli governments have combined an election campaign with a major military operation against some Arab or Palestinian target. And this combination, it has been argued, yields decisive electoral success for the right.

Menachem Begin’s government won the 1981 election three weeks after carrying out a dramatic attack on the Osirak research nuclear reactor that France had sold to Iraq. In the view of most outside observers, the reactor was not suited to the largescale production of enriched uranium and posed no threat to Israel, but the attack was popular in Israel.

Ehud Olmert’s coalition launched the “Cast Lead” onslaught against the Gaza Strip in December 2008-January 2009. The three-week campaign left 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead. The election was held a month later and Binyamin Netanyahu emerged as the leader of a new right-wing coalition.

So here we go again, perhaps? Netanyahu is still the prime minister and the next elections are due in January. What better way to ensure success than to go and bash the Palestinians again? A week later, with 86 Palestinians and three Israelis dead, his reelection is assured: Israelis overwhelmingly support

That’s the case made against Israel. Does it hold water? Well, actually, no, it doesn’t.

Begin’s attack on the Osirak reactor in 1981 may well have been an electoral stunt. But Ehud Olmert was not leading a right-wing government in 2008.

He was the leader of a new centrist party, Kadima, formed by defectors from both the right wing Likud Party and left wing Labour.

It is equally hard to believe that Netanyahu is seeking electoral gain by attacking Gaza this month.

Every opinion poll in Israel for months past has been saying he is going to win the January election hands down.

Historians traditionally split into two camps: those who see purpose, planning and plots behind every event, and those who think most events are just the random interaction of conflicting strategies, imperfect information and human frailty. This latter approach is known in the historical trade as the “cock-up theory of history,” and it is very attractive as an explanation for the current clash.

Netanyahu, cruising home to an easy electoral victory in January, had absolutely no need for a little war with the Palestinians. Indeed, his strategy of continuously shouting “wolf” about Iran and its alleged nuclear weapons program has successfully distracted international attention from the Palestin-

ians, leaving him free to expand Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank unhindered.

Similarly, the Hamas leaders who ruled Gaza had no interest in triggering a military conflict with Israel.

They had every reason to believe that the sweeping political changes in the Arab world were strengthening their position internationally, and they had no need to remind Arabs of their plight. So how did this idiocy happen?

Another cock-up, of course.

But since the mini-war doesn’t really serve the purposes of any major player, it will probably be shut down again fairly soon.

Time to replace the Indian Act Dear Editor: Hundreds of thousands of First Nations people live in Canada and they deserve better than to be shackled by the failed colonial and paternalistic policies of the Indian Act, which has helped deny them their rights, fair share in resources, and fostered mistrust and created systemic barriers to self-determination and success. First Nations have been adamant that we need to move beyond it, yet the government has so far refused to get the ball rolling.

The Indian Act is more than 136 years old and touches every aspect of life of First Nations. First Nations need the approval of the minister to pass bylaws. It puts so much red tape around economic development that it often doesn’t happen. The act is so intrusive on reserve residents’ lives that they cannot even write a will without the minister’s approval.

Yet, as Prime Minister Stephen Harper has rightly said, the act has deep roots and cannot simply be abolished. For decades governments of all

stripes have allowed this problem to fester.

Now all parties have a chance to take real leadership on the problem. I have a motion before the House of Commons compelling the federal government to work with First Nations on a nation-to-nation basis on a plan to replace the Indian Act with modern agreements based on rights, responsibilities of the Crown, and the original Treaty relationship. With a deadline and a process, we can finally begin to resolve the many long-standing economic and social inequities that plague First Nations communities in Canada.

Yet the Conservatives, including Wetaskwin MP Blaine Calkins, said they would vote against this progress by opposing the motion. They say they want to change the status quo, but once again, this is just words.

We cannot continue to put this off. Please tell Mr. Calkins to vote for change.

MP Calkins visits Korea for Remembrance Day

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye When Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins realized there was a chance to visit his great uncle’s gravesite in South Korea, he took it.

There were two other reasons Calkins went to Korea during Remembrance Day: he plans to sponsor Senator Yonah Martin’s private members bill to establish a national day of commemoration of the Korean War and to speak with Canadian veterans who served in Korea.

July 27, 2013 will mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War and Calkins feels it will be an important time, “It’s a difficult thing as MP to not be in your constituency on Veteran’s Day.” He left Nov. 9 and had four days in South Korea with stops in Busan and Seoul. The first two days were in Busan, which gave him a chance to visit his great uncle’s gravesite who served and died in the Korean War in February 1951. “This is the personal reason I decided to go.”

He feels Canadians could be doing more to remember the veterans who fought in that war

but he credits South Korean policy makers for the respect they give to the United Nations Memorial Cemetery maintained by a Canadian whose father is buried there.

In a country of 50 million people, Calkins said there is a mass of people,

buildings and high-speed transit, “yet no building can cast a shadow on that cemetery.” No matter where the sun is in the sky the government shows respect to all the veterans who are buried there, he explained.

Calkins had dinner with veterans who had not been back to South Korea since the war ended. He was able to hear their stories, which he said was a humbling experience. One of the veterans — a survivor of the Battle of Kapyong Continued on page 16

Family doctors honoured

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Some Ponoka doctors have taken care of several generations of residents; they have been there through every broken bone and new baby delivered.

To celebrate the work of family doctors, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) celebrated the ninth annual Family Doctor Week Nov. 12 to 17 to show appreciation of the role doctors’ play in a family’s life.

Dr. Izak van der Westhuizen says the work for a family physician is extensive and can cover acute care, home care, surgery and other areas.

In a small town such as Ponoka their jobs increase. “Your scope of practice will be more extensive.”

He feels one of the benefits living in a small community is knowing residents and having a quiet place to live. “It’s a great place to raise your family.”

The doctor/patient relationship is complex, he explained, and often has a psychological component doctors must be aware of. The benefits of the relationship are strong though, especially if the client realizes their doctor is there to help.

“It’s beneficial to us and the patient if they tell us as much as they can,” said van der Westhuizen.

The more they know about a

situation, the better they can help a patient, Van der Westhuizen has been a doctor since 1994.

“The biggest thing is to see you can diagnose people early in a disease…and be able to treat people.”

What keeps him going is people’s gratitude when he has been able to help them. “That’s what keeps us going.”

One of the challenges he sees for Ponoka doctors as a group is the commitment to 24/7 care, which means covering the emergency room on nights and weekends. He does feel though there are plans in the works to increase the number of doctors in the province.

With the current doctor shortage faced not only in Ponoka but in Alberta, Coun. Rick Bonnett, town representative to the Ponoka Physician Attraction and Retention Committee, said they focus on the community aspect when attracting a doctor. The goal is to show Ponoka as a welcoming environment for the entire family.

Despite only one doctor considering a move to Ponoka last year, the group works closely with the Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) in case there is a doctor touring a specific area. When moving to Alberta a doctor usually has a specific area they would like to live in so RPAP

Bonnett has heard of other communities offering a financial incentive to relocate to their community but for Ponoka that is not possible.

“Unfortunately we don’t have the budget to do that,” said Bonnett.

He does feel Ponoka is close to an ideal doctor-to-patient ratio. “We’re only one or two doctors from being in good shape…at least if we keep trying at least there’s some hope.”

Facts on Alberta’s doctors A press release from the Canadian Institute of Health Information on Nov. 15 shows growth in the number of physicians in Alberta since 2001.

• There were 5,154 physicians in 2001 with 8,258 in 2011 a 60-per-cent increase.

• Family physicians grew by 56.8 per cent in that time compared to the 24.1 per cent Canadian rate.

• Between 2010 and 2011 there was an increase of 376 physicians.

Alberta Safety Council will not give a child a babysitting course diploma before age 12; so many individuals use this age guideline when considering leaving a child alone.

Home alone tips could include, keeping in touch with your children, having your children practice what to do in an emergency, setting firm rules on what your children are allowed to do, and having all emergency number memorized and available.

• How well do you know the neighbors and people in your neighborhood? For children it is important for them to learn home phone numbers, home addresses, cell phone numbers and emergency phone numbers. As parents we should get to know the children’s friends, and work together and know your neighbors.

• Bullying has been given considerable attention recently; even young children can see and learn the differences in their friend and class mates whether it be color, religion, nationality, or ability. Parents, teachers, community members and others in a child’s life can provide wisdom and support for children to understand the differences in people and become more tolerant to differences.

• How informed as parents are you to the dangers of drug abuse? What are some of the common acronyms young persons are using when it comes to drugs? On Nov. 29 a drug awareness presentation will be held at the Youth Centre. Coming from Peterborough, Ont., David Tremblay looks forward to his new role in town.

Tremblay worked at the Toronto Public Library in one of 99 branches as reference librarian.

He managed the international book collection of different languages.

His hope is to bring more programs; some ideas he had were information sessions for seniors, more children’s programs and also getting a games night for teens. Whatever direction Tremblay goes, he looks forward to working with the different community organizations in town.

An idea he has considered too is putting out a survey to library clients to see what services they would like to see.

Almost Midnight Madness is coming to town

The sales prices are in and Ponoka’s businesses are ready for a night of shopping during Almost Midnight Madness.

Hosted by the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce, the streets of Ponoka are expected to fill up Nov. 23 not long after the fireworks light up the night at 6 p.m. by the north

bridge.

“It is the shopping event of the year for Ponoka merchants,” explained Lana Johnson, executive manager of the chamber. “We kickoff the event with tree lighting.”

Tree lighting is at 5:30 p.m. at the Ponoka Town Hall. Santa Claus gets a special ride from the Ponoka Fire Department to greet kids after the tree lighting and free hot chocolate

will be ready for everyone to warm up.

The event is sponsored by chamber members and the Town of Ponoka. The main goal is to get people shopping locally.

“We want the people to be in the stores supporting our local businesses,” Johnson stated.

One of the things Johnson enjoys about Almost Midnight Madness is the energy in the air. “I enjoy the atmosphere because everyone seems to be excited,” she explained. “It’s good energy because they’re (shoppers) excited they got a good deal.”

She believes the night not only helps businesses but the general prosperity of the community since money stays here. “Whenever possible, shop local.”

Ponoka News manager Judy Dick said the event has been happening for more than 10 years.

The paper works closely with other businesses donate gift certificates. Shoppers who bring a non-perishable food item or a donation to the Ponoka Food Bank receive a gift certificate from the Ponoka News’ Christmas tree, Dick explained. More than 1,000 pounds was donated to the food bank last year.

“It is busy and we would like to see it busier,” she stated.

She feels the fireworks are a fitting start to the night, which has businesses open until 11 p.m. Dick expects to see shoppers from communities such as Lacombe and Rimbey, as well as Tees, Clive and Bashaw. “It’s widespread…the stores put on great specials for the evening.”

It is another way to bring the community together, she said.

The museum is a place that honours the sacrifices of veterans of the past. “Not only Canadian vets, but vets from our allies,� Calkins said.

parts of the building. He believes it is a way to remind them of the past. “They can come and play and regale in the freedom they have,� he explained. “To be in the war museum and hear the laughter in children is something that stands out in my mind.�

Calkins and Senator Martin also had a chance to see pictures of the first Imjin Hockey Tournament held in 1952, still played this day by Canadian expats living in Seoul.

Canadian veterans played their own hockey tournament in the cold winter months on the Imjin River and it has created a tradition.

Aside from the main purpose of his trip, Calkins also visited his colleagues on the last day of the trip, at the Korean National Assembly to discuss Canada’s free trade agreement with South Korea. Talks are still under way but he wanted to try and ensure equal access for Canadian beef as beef from the United States. “Otherwise we’re at a competitive disadvantage as the U.S.�

The trip was something Calkins enjoyed but he will remember his solemn visit to the United Nations Memorial Cemetery and how Canadian veterans are revered there.

Man becomes combative with woman and police

Impaired driver almost collides with Mountie A driver got the attention of police rather quickly Nov. 18 at 2:30 a.m. after passing a northbound vehicle on Highway 2A and forcing a southbound police cruiser to avoid a collision.

The driver of a 2000 GMC pickup truck was eventually stopped in Hobbema. The 30-year-old woman showed signs of impairment to police and she tested with a blood-alcohol concentration of .18 twice.

The officer observed two people in the front asleep and one-eighth of a bottle of cognac in the back seat and the smell of alcohol emanating from the people.

The driver failed the roadside screening test but by the time the person tested at the police station they were below the legal limit. The driver was given a 24-hour suspension.

Driver over white line A routine patrol Nov. 18 after midnight by a member of the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit has resulted in charges of impaired driving for a 23-year-old man from Black Diamond.

The officer observed the driver of a pickup truck — heading westbound on Highway 53 towards Highway 2 — riding the white line of the road. He was stopped and tested for a blood-alcohol concentration of .16 twice.

Rollover ends in charges A Highway 2 southbound vehicle rolled three times Nov. 18 at 10:45 a.m. after the driver of another vehicle collided with it. The driver in the right lane reported his vehicle fishtailed, which he corrected but said it occurred a second time. This time his vehicle collided with the other car in the left lane forcing it into the ditch.

The driver of the vehicle that rolled had undetermined injuries and the driver whose vehicle fishtailed was charged with failing to maintain the centre of the lane.

A 23-year-old man from Hobbema faces charges of assault after fighting with security in a downtown bar in the early morning hours of Nov. 18.

He was allegedly with a woman earlier in the evening who was driving when an argument broke out in the car. It is reported he punched her twice in the head while she was driving and then took the vehicle to a bar. The woman had a cut under her eye but did not need medical treatment.

Some time later he fought with security at the bar and police found him covered in blood from his elbows to fingertips.

He was arrested for mischief but became combative with Mounties who had to use a Taser to arrest him, which did not result in any further injury.

The man was then taken to the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre to treat the wounds on his arm and is reported to have been un-cooperative with staff and threatened a police officer.

The man was returned to the police station and was released on $1,000 cash bail. He has also been charged with uttering threats, resist or obstruct a peace officer and mischief.

Boyfriend punches and kicks girlfriend Police responded to a call of a man beating his girlfriend Nov. 17 at 2 a.m. in the downtown area of Ponoka. The man punched and broke a car window and had blood on his hand when he entered a downtown bar. He was removed from the bar where he punched his girlfriend to the floor and kicked her in the chest and face.

A 28-year-old man from Fort Macleod has been charged with two counts of assault, mischief, four counts of failing to comply with conditions of undertaking recognizance. He also had outstanding warrants for fines and was remanded in custody.

Youth charged with sexual assault A 14-year-old boy has been charged with sexual assault Nov. 14. The teen allegedly attempted to touch a youth worker in a sexual fashion while he was sleeping.

Six-year-old child alone Child services has been called to assist after a six-year-old child was found Nov. 15 walking at 3:30 p.m. eastbound along 48 Avenue toward Highway 2A. The child is reported to have a disability and was able to provide only a first name to Mounties.

Has shopping changed much over the years?

Over the past few years when it comes to going shopping I have pretty well been relegated to being the official “cart pusher” and “vehicle packer.” But that’s really not too bad because I can now roll along and have some fun observing all the wild and sometimes wacky habits of the rest of the shopping masses!

Just like so many of you when we were kids, I loved getting sent down to the corner store to pick up a loaf of bread, a quart of milk, or whatever else mom needed really quick. We usually got to pick up a 5 cent treat for our troubles, and it was always so easy to find everything in those friendly little shops. have changed quite drastically, just because there are more and much bigger stores, and there are far too many aisles and items to choose from. As a senior I just love browsing through the entire store, especially the food and munchies section, as well as checking out all those new gizmos in the electrical and toy departments.

So what has changed in the fabulous world of shopping over the years?

• Shopping hours have been extended so much now that we should be able to schedule almost everything we have to do each day without getting too stressed.

In my humble opinion, I don’t think that any stores should be open before noon on Sundays.

• I know they have fancy signs at the top of each aisle in most stores to tell you where to go to get whatever you need, while some shops even have little flashing digital signs that show you prices of each item, as well as up-to-date savings. As you know they also have those phones where you can find out all about certain products, but for those of us who often get lost or frustrated, I wish they had a phone where we could call and find that special exotic item on our list that most of us didn’t even know existed, but is what makes mom’s apple pie taste so good.

• Unless you are from the old school like our household, most of today’s shopping lists have been entered in advance on our cellphones or somewhere on those other gizmos that forever ring, beep or hum. I actually watched one gentleman standing in front of a packed meat counter, and chatting on his cellphone trying

I’m sure that nobody minds the music in malls, and while I’d like to see a little more variety, we all know what we’re going to be humming to from now until Christmas Eve. Shopping in the electronic era A lot of the new electronic gizmos and games now on the shelves have a mind of their own, but don’t worry because our grandchildren will soon figure them out. Today kids don’t really get turned on by wind-up toys anymore, because just about everything requires batteries. When we were young the rage was Meccano sets for boys and dolls for girls, but now they live in a world of Lego, very modern Barbie, and a wide variety of newest trend games and gadgets that actually talk back.

I really hope that the outdoor gifts of skates, sleds, skis, and snowshoes will still be found under the tree, and will encourage everyone to go outside and get some exercise. As wise old grandparents I guess we have finally realized that it is not kosher to get the younger ones a set of drums, a trumpet, or clothes, but if all else fails cash or a gift card is the easy way out to keep the family happy.

Whatever the case, please vow to have some fun shopping, stop for a coffee or some fresh air if you get to stressed, and if possible try to buy gifts from the heart that you would like to receive, and then wrap them up and give them to the favourite people in your life.

Get a head start on your Christmas shopping spree this Friday evening, Nov. 23, during Almost Midnight Madness in and around Ponoka, but also take lots of time to have a great week, all of you!

Band releases first collaboration

By Amelia Naismith As individuals they have performed all over North America and have recorded on many albums. Now that they’ve come together, Tap9 is holding a release party to introduce the world to their collaborative debut CD, Tap9.

The central Alberta band consists of Tony Hoffmann, Steve Tanner, Orion Donison, Brad Harsent, Grant Harder and Sheryl Kreil.

Tap9 came together in 2010 and while they can be defined as alternative rock their style and skills range from rock to jazz to country.

“It’s kind of exciting,” said Tony Hoffmann, vocals and guitar. The band’s members had performed with each other before in a variety of settings, from cover bands to larger jazz ensembles.

“We just decided to come together because we all enjoy writing original music,” said Hoffmann.

Ponoka was given a taste of the band at this year’s Chamber of Commerce business awards banquet, and once the band began to play people of all ages couldn’t help but dance.

“We had a lot of fun doing that,” said Hoffmann, who also said he was thankful for the opportunity.

Tap9’s first released song is Alberta Home and the album was released in September.

Alberta Home was released in 2011 and spread not only through Alberta but also across Canada, the United States and Europe.

Queens learn lessons in zone finals loss

In any sport there is a season to remember and for the St. Augustine Queens senior girls’ volleyball team this year is going to be one of them.

They were excited at the chance to take zones Nov. 16 and 17 and compete — for the first time — at provincials but those hopes were dashed in the finals against Bawlf.

Hopes were high at the beginning of the finals, especially after beating Bawlf 25-18 and 25-12 in round robin games.

The Queens were nervous at first, explained team co-captain Alison Beier. She praised the team for coming back from a deficit however.

“Both times we were kind of trailing but both times we managed to come back,” she said. “I’m still pretty proud of the team.”

They were behind by a margin of six points in the first game and eventually lost 25-21. The other captain, Kaitlin Lomas, feels the finals were a challenge for the entire team. “I think that it was a really emotional game for everyone.”

Coach Darren Josephison said Bawlf has a strong volleyball program and he feels it has given them valuable experience, especially in a high-pressure game. “I knew that might be the danger playing them in the finals. That would be their motivation to beat us.”

His players were fairly upset at the loss. “I think there were probably at least four girls in tears.”

Bawlf played a challenging game in the finals and played consistent volleyball throughout.

“Both times we were kind of trailing but both times we managed to come back.

I’m still pretty proud of the team.”

Alison Beier “The other team just did so well, they didn’t let us off the hook when we made a mistake,” he explained.

Lomas and Beier are both graduating this year and they considered what the season meant for them. For Lomas it was enhancing her leadership in volleyball. “This season for me was all about developing different skills.”

Skills such as patience and leadership for her team. “Looking at how I can improve my game and helping improve others without nagging.”

Beier feels the team bonded well.

“Everyone tried their hardest.”

Josephison feels the season appeared to go by quicker than expected. “It seems like it was Sept. 1 a couple of days ago.”

He is proud of what has happened to St. Augustine’s volleyball program over the last few years, which has gained respect from other schools. “We’ve medalled in the last four of five years…We have arrived as a program.”

The Queens finished zones with a record of 8-2 playing Coronation 25-13 and 25-21, Bawlf 25-18 and 25-12, Chauvin 25-10 and 25-18, and Daysland 25-21 and 25-18.

Ponoka hockey players picked for European tour

By Amelia Naismith Two of Ponoka’s top peewee hockey players are lacing up their skates and heading off to central Europe this spring to take part in an international hockey trip.

Jared Rice, 11, and Noah Hackett, 10, play for the Ponoka Stampeders peewee A team and tried out for the Canadian team along with approximately 1,500 other boys born in 2001. They were scouted by coach and trip director Peter Lameir, who’s been doing this for more than 20 years.

“They’re nice boys, they’re good boys,” said Lameir.

The trip will kick off in late March next year and the boys will play anywhere from 12 to 19 games, depending on how they do, in a total of 16 days.

“They’re almost cramming a whole season into two weeks,” said Cam Rice, Jared’s father.

During their tryouts Rice was nervous but Hackett had a feeling he would make the team. “I felt like a strong player, I wasn’t that nervous.”

The boys where on the ice for seven hours with a one-hour break, said their fathers.

“I think it’s going to be fun playing on bigger rinks than we play in Alberta,” said Hackett. “I won’t be used to it.”

“I’m excited to play in different countries,” added Rice, who isn’t nervous about playing the international teams, he’s more nervous about the flight over.

Canada’s team consists of 17 skaters and two goalies. Mr. Rice says there are five or six from Alberta and the rest are from out of province.

Ken Hackett said his son’s been waiting for the tryouts and this opportunity for more than a year.

He also thinks the trip will be a good bonding opportunity with his son.

“We’re just there to make sure they’re fed, watered and sleep,” said Mr. Rice with a laugh.

“Peter has a lot of time invested in these boys, the least they can do is perform for him,” said Mr. Rice. “He expects the most out these boys.”

Despite the gruelling timeline, Mr. Rice believes the trip will help the boys’ game and future.

“I think it’s a heck of a good opportunity for these boys to play with top boys around the county. It looks good on a college resume.”

The boys will play their first game in Germany the day they arrive in the county. “I think it’s a pretty neat accomplishment for those two boys to be asked to represent their county, basically,” Mr. Rice said.

Not only with the boys be playing hockey but they’ll also tour EuSubway Fresh rope, including visiting a concentration camp.

Ponoka athlete takes gold at rugby national championships

forwards and to retain or gain possession of the ball during the different phases of play.

“I like being involved in the play all the time… it’s exciting,” said Huysmans.

This was the second year they played against the University of Guelph, Ont. Gryphons in the finals and revenge was the main motivator, explained Huysmans, as the team lost 28-0 last year. “We were pretty shaken up with our loss.”

With a perfect season under their belts, the XWomen had every intention of winning against the Gryphons, which helped bring them together. She feels their opponents had as much a chance at winning as they did. “Both our teams had almost exactly the same lineup as last year,” she said. “It was pretty awesome the atmosphere of our team.”

The X-Women had a resounding 37-0 victory against their opponents.

The 18-year-old was a student at St. Augustine Catholic School and competed in volleyball, crosscountry, track and field, and played point guard in basketball until Grade 11 where she studied at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask. Basketball was the main reason she went there but was introduced to rugby and found it was something she enjoyed. She also feels there was more opportunity to move forward with rugby compared

to basketball where she would most likely have been at a smaller school.

The championships made her feel as if she was part of a larger family as more than 5,000 people came to watch them compete, including 13 St. FX teams.

Huysmans’ area of study is a bachelor of arts with emphasis in psychology but sports has been a part of her life. “I’ve always been active in pretty much every sport.”

She has enjoyed the experience at St. FX and knows of several teammates who have recently been approached by Olympic team organizers. There is also an opportunity for the under-20 players to attend fitness testing. It might open up some opportunities to be invited later on to British Columbia where the Olympic training is being conducted.

Huysmans also looks forward to what is happening with rugby sevens. “Canada sevens rugby is pretty big.”

Another reason she enjoys rugby is the camaraderie along the way; she feels team sports help develop strong friendships. “It’s been a good experience.”

The team was ahead 5-0 at the end of the first half and scored another 32 points in the second.

Don passed away peacefully in Shuswap Lake General Hospital on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the age of 88 years. He was born to Grant and May Paulsen at home on the family farm at Asker, AB on February 8, 1924. He is survived by his loving wife Anne, daughters Ginny-Lou (Jack) Alexander and Fran Porteous, sons Russ (Lotty) Paulsen and Mark (Berna) Daniel, grandchildren Heather (David) Robinson, Tricia Davis, Rob (Carol-Lyn) Davis, Anita Paulsen, Ben Paulsen and Jennifer Paulsen as well as two great grandsons.Don has worked at several occupations during his life including farming, sawmilling, store keeping and owner-operator of a machine shop. He spent several years as a fireman with the Ranchero Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department.A celebration of life will be held in Alberta, near Don’s birthplace, in the spring of 2013.

OTTO BRACHMANN A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, bus driver and entertainer Alfred Otto Brachmann, 81, passed away suddenly at his home on November 17, 2012 with his wife Myrtle at his side.

Otto is survived by his loving wife Myrtle Brachmann.

They have been married for 48 years and still reside on Otto’s Family farm where he was born. He is survived by his loving children: His eldest son Ben Brachmann and his wife Jill; and their three boys, Lee and his wife Danielle and their three daughters (Jessica, Julia and Annalise), Matt Brachmann and Cole Brachmann. His daughter Rose Brachmann and her four children; Lana and her husband Rob Simmonds and their two daughters (Mya and Ainsley), Kyle Grapentine, Brant Magotiaux and Jenna Magotiaux. His daughter Vangie Gray and Dwight Dufva, and their three children; Cara and her husband Tim Herbert and their four children (Carson, Carli, Gracie and Hunter), J.C. Gray and his wife Jamie and their three boys (Kadence, Owen and Chase) and Calee Dufva. His son Danny Brachmann and his wife Marjorie and their three children; Bowin, Danya and Delaney Brachmann. His daughter Jennifer and her husband Marty Trimble and their three daughters; Brenna, Brooklynn and Bella Trimble. His youngest daughter Faye and her husband Colin Leforte and their two children; Maddison and Kelton. His sister Frieda Schaerer, many nephews, nieces, extended family and special friends. Otto was born on the farm north of Crestomere, he was the youngest of five children. Otto raised his family on that same location which he still farmed with his son Danny. Otto happily drove the Crestomere School Bus for 30 years. Otto was an avid entertainer and volunteer and brought much joy to many for over 60 years with his music. Otto will be fondly remembered by many and missed for his music, generosity and kindness. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Rimbey Zion Lutheran Church located at 4521 - 54th Avenue, Rimbey. Lunch will be served following the service. LAURA WIERZBA Laura Angela Wierzba (nee Doran) was born May 21, 1918 on the family homestead, 20 miles northwest of Ponoka.

She was the fourth of six children born to Lawrence and Minnie (Merrigan) Doran. She passed away peacefully on November 15, 2012 at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Center with her beloved family by her side. Her family is extremely grateful that, although she struggled with her health for that last few years, she was only in the hospital for one week prior to her passing and had full use of her remarkable mental capacity to the end.

As well as her parents, Laura was predeceased (in 1997) by her husband of 55 years, Phil Wierzba; her brothers Robert (Delphene) Doran, Cecil (also known as Buster) Doran and Willard Doran; and her sisters Madglin (Ray) Graham and Anne (Gordon) Anderson, as well as their spouses.

Laura is survived by her sons Pat (Sally), Grant (Claudia) and Rick (Jane); her daughter Marianne (Rod) Martin; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express our appreciation to Dr. Halse and the staff at Ponoka Hospital and Care Center and Sunrise Village for the care they provided Mom. In particular, we are grateful for the compassion shown by the nursing staff in her final hours. We would also like to thank Shirley Greene for always “being there” for her.

A Prayer Vigil will be held at Ponoka Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. The service to celebrate Laura’s life will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ponoka at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 22, 2012. Interment will follow at the Forest Home Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to the Stagecoach Saloon at the Ponoka Stampede grounds for a time of fellowship and to share “Laura’s stories”.

Camrose County is inviting submissions to a Request For Proposal (RFP) to operate a summer Food Concession at Pelican Point Park on Buffalo Lake. The successful applicant will be required to supply an outfitted facility (mobile concession) to conduct business from. It must be sufficient to meet local health authority standards and further that the successful applicant can obtain the necessary food service establishment license.

The successful applicant will also be responsible for any and all site preparation, leveling, earth removal, brushing, scraping, excavation, fill, compacting or any other site work necessary. They will also be responsible for all utility hook-ups such as light, water, power, gas, telephone or any other service as well as continued payment of charges for such services imposed by any municipal, legislative or other authority.

The successful applicant will be required to observe and carry out their duties in compliance with any and all legislation and/or regulations under the Municipal Government Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, W.C.B., Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Codes, Alberta Health, by-laws or policies of whatever jurisdictional or regulatory authority that may govern, all of which may be amended or repealed and replaced from time to time.

The successful applicant must provide the Landlord with proof of two million ($2,000,000.00) dollars Public Liability and Property Insurance for the said concession. Such coverage shall remain in effect throughout the season and shall name Camrose County as a co-insured. Such written proof shall be certified by the successful applicant’s Insurance Company and submitted to the County prior to the business commencement.

In return for the authorization to conduct business, the County requests each applicant to submit a fair and reasonable proposal for Landlord remuneration. At the same time there is an opportunity to negotiate a desired term of agreement and any particulars for option renewal. The applicant should also detail any relevant experience, facilities, equipment or any other information that they may deem significant to providing adequate background.

Duties and responsibilities of this position include: • Operate and maintain a wide variety of moderately heavy mobile public works equipment engaged in construction and maintenance of roads, water and sewer systems and waste management activities. • Operate and maintain a wide variety of small mobile equipment. • Clean and maintain facilities to an acceptable public use standard. • Perform routine building maintenance duties. • Work effectively with the public.

The ability to work flexible hours and in varied weather conditions is necessary. A valid Class 3 Operators License with air brake endorsement is required. The successful candidate will also be required to submit a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract.

Rink waits on colder weather

It’s winter in Canada and as it gets colder, residents can’t wait to get their skates on and enjoy some outdoor shinny hockey.

Soon the Scott Seaman Sports Rink will be flooded and people will have the chance to enjoy a brisk skate. Wes Amendt, director of community services for the Town of Ponoka, expects to flood the rink in December when the weather gets colder.

“It’s all dependent on weather and having the right conditions to put the ice in,” said Amendt.

The challenge he sees for the rink is when it is sunny outside, even if it is below 0 degrees C the ice can get soft. “On a sunny day in December or January the ice along the edge of the board where it gets a reflection, the ice starts to melt.”

It takes approximately 10 days for staff to flood the rink and have the ice ready for public use and is easier for them to prepare the ice when the weather is colder. The ice plant uses glycol to help cool the water faster and artificially cools the surface of the ice, explained Amendt. “On the cold days the plant doesn’t have to kick in.”

He feels it would defeat the purpose to put the ice in while the weather is warmer, especially along the north boards of the rink, which has the most contact with the sun.

Amendt realizes there is a demand to use it; last year people took advantage of the rink.

Once the ice is in however, staff usually flood in the morning and snow gets plowed off to the north side. One of the changes made to the rink is moving one of the eightfoot doors on the north side to allow snow removal out of the way of skaters.

Kelsey Hycha, Complex operator for the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex, said in an email interview the challenge they face is cooling the ice from the bottom to the top. The reflected light from the sun and reflection off the boards melts the ice on the top. Hycha believes turning up the plant cooling system will not help because of the heat from the sun; he said a roof would help keep the temperature down.

Among the benefits to residents is the fact that it is free to use and there is no need to reserve time as it is available to the public. The town budgets enough for operating expenses and if it does not get used then it is saved for other expenses.

“We budget $10,000 a year for the outdoor rink but that doesn’t include the repairs to the Zamboni,” he explained.

The main costs are for electricity and water but the town may not spend it all in one season. Extra funds are saved for equipment repairs and other unforeseen expenses. The goal is to leave the ice in up to early March but it is dependent on weather conditions, said Amendt.

Lacombe County has recently completed a draft of the QEII North of Lacombe Area Structure Plan (ASP) for public review. The draft ASP was developed based on direction from Council, input received from the community, comments received from various government agencies, an analysis of the plan area, and policies in the County’s planning documents. The draft plan identifies lands north of the City of Lacombe and west of the QEII Highway for recreational, residential, and commercial development and some lands adjacent to Highway 604 and west of the QEII Highway for recreational and commercial development. The draft plan also outlines the policy in terms of the continued use of the lands for agricultural uses and other related opportunities; the requirements for development in terms of site design, landscaping, and signage; the provision of servicing; and required road infrastructure.
