The new Purity Farm, Pet and Garden Centre is nearing completion of its indoor renovations, and is celebrating with a host of new products that, owner John McCurrach expects to be available during Friday night’s Midnight Madness.

“We’ve brought in a huge new pet line and expanded our pet area, which is now the size of what our old store was,” McCurrach said. The store is open during the remainder of the renovations, which are expected to wrap up by Dec. 8, at 1690 Voght St. The family-owned business has been operating there since 1995, and has been in Merritt for about 60 years.

“We’re starting to see some changes happening downtown, and downtown Merritt needed a shot in the arm,” McCurrach said. “We’ve changed every light fixture, every wall has had a hole punched through it or filled in, we’ve removed most of the interior walls, opened things up to make one big retail store, and we’ve gone to follow a country western type of look with barn wood flooring and a grayish blue colour.”

The renovations began in July and include reclaimed wood floors, new paint, new signs, new lighting, and a new facade that’s consistent with the city’s guidelines. On top of all the changes, which McCurrach said cost as much as the original land acquisition and building, the store’s retail space has doubled with the absence of the conjoining former tenant, and inventory has grown to fill that new space. McCurrach said he hired long-standing local contractors to do the work and that the response to the changes have been favourable.

“People in Merritt are supportive of us,” McCurrach said.

“We have a great following in the ranching community around here. [The renovation] a big ticket item for us, but it should be rewarding for the people of Merritt and for ourselves.”

Once the winter is over, crews will get to work on surfacing the parking lot and the garden centre.

“We’re going to be expanding our garden centre line by bringing in fountains, benches, more plants, more shrubs, and more trees,” McCurrach said. “The garden centre will have a new look to it, and it’s going to be beautiful.”

McCurrach said he’s looking for additional employees at the store and is always open to hearing back from customers.

“People are welcome to come down, have a look and see what we’ve done,” he said. “We encourage that.”
