Giant windmill blades arrive Black Press

PORT HARDY— The first gigantic wind turbine components destined for the Knob Hill wind farm site have arrived in Port

Hardy.

The 4,500-hectare site at Knob Hill was initially selected by Seabreeze Power Corp. after an extensive research project and a call from BC Hydro

for suppliers of green energy. International Power ( IPR-GDF Suez) then bought phase one of the site after striking a deal with BC Hydro to supply them with

99mW, enough power to supply 30,000 homes. Seabreeze retains the phase two portion of the site with the option for future development.

The power will

be manufactured by 55 turbines, each of which has three 50-metre blades.

The first blade came from Nanaimo to Port Hardy last week on a purpose-built rig. The transport, 185 feet in length, has steerable rear wheels hydraulically connected to the cab to allow the massive trailer to negotiate corners.

Each of the wind

turbines will be transported north in eight pieces — three tower segments, three blades, a hub and the nacelle, which houses the generating components.

Because the transportation is necessarily oversized to haul such massive components, the bulk of the runs will take place overnight, so as to cause minimum disruption to traffic.

The components will be stored at a purpose-cleared staging area in Port Hardy while roads to the wind farm site are completed.

The wind farm, the first such largescale wind farm on Vancouver Island, is scheduled to begin commercial operations in July of 2013 and is contracted to provide power to BC Hydro for 20 years.

Tom Pallan’s family has celebrated a lot of firsts, including being one of the original Indo-Canadian families to settle in Canada.

“We’ve been here since 1906,” explains Pallan, founder of the highly successful Pallan Group.

In addition, Pallan was the first person of Indo-Canadian heritage to graduate from the forestry program at UBC. Today, at age 80, he shows the same pioneering spirit.

Pallan recently became part the first cohort of alumni

volunteers to read and rank the new Broad Based Admissions (BBA) application forms submitted by prospective UBC Forestry students.

“Part of the reason forestry students are required to submit an essay with their application is because UBC wants to attract well-rounded people who will be helpful to society,” Pallan reveals.

“You can tell a lot about an applicant by the way they express themselves, their interests, and commitments,” he continues.

Pallan’s four brothers also graduated from UBC – two foresters, one electrical engineer and one teacher.

In 1958, Pallan donned cap and gown and graduated from UBC with a double major in forestry and engineering. He also earned his Master’s Degree in forestry before starting Pallan Timber Products Ltd. with his father in 1959.

Today, Pallan Group includes three divisions: forestry, custom lumber cutting, and real estate— respectively Pallan Timber, Howe Sound Forest Products, and Pallan Holdings. With his sons at the helm, Tom is enjoying life as the partially retired CEO. “My forestry education has served me and my family

Last week I fished the Quinsam River and the first few minutes I was into catching cutties using a number 6 hook tied with a silver body. This catch and Release River is ideal fishing at the moment because of the low water level and clear water. The locals know the pools and some nice Steelhead fishing can be had in the various pools.

If you plan to fish a specific lake this time of year remember there is some snow in the upper elevation lakes and the roads can be rough and wet.

Fishing from shore can be very productive using power bait or lures. With the shorter daylight hours a good time to fish is late afternoon until it gets dark.

The Sport Fishing Institute of British Columbia recently held meetings in Victoria, Campbell River and a dy.

Comox Fire Department puts newbies through the ‘code three grind’ Erin Haluschak Black Press COMOX — Nine new recruits faced a physical challenge earlier this month to see not who could lift the most or run the fastest, but ultimately who could help those in need.

The nine recruits are working their way through the intensive training required to be a volunteer, on-call firefighter for the Comox Fire Department, explained Fire Chief Gord Schreiner. The recruits must past the physical ‘code three grind’ test to continue with training, said Schreiner.

“This year, we had 24 applicants, which is a fair number, and we had nine candidates selected to perform the physical challenge,” he noted, and added the recruits now have to train for anywhere between another three months to a year before they can assist on a fire.

Schreiner said he credits the excellent

training facility on site at the fire hall which is used not only by local firefighters, but those from across the Island and province to attract volunteers.

Although it is challenging to find people to cover the Monday-to-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift, Schreiner noted the department does offer flexibility, particularly for those working shift work. He added he looks for three distinct qualities in individuals interested in joining: “You must be physically fit, highly dedicated and highly motivated.”

Schreiner explained volunteers must commit to a two-house Tuesday night practice, but the timing can be somewhat flexible for those who have to work. Once a month, new recruits also have to attend one Saturday training day.

Although the overall training takes about a year, Schreiner said some of the recruits can respond to medical emergencies within three months,

depending on their background. Out of the current group of recruits, he noted five have had prior training and two had training as military firefighters.

With more than $1 million invested in their training facility, Schreiner said he’s “very proud” of the site Comox has to offer.

“We’ve got everything you need to train a firefighter on site,” he noted, and added they are one of two facilities on the Island and one of four within the province to have a live fire building.

“We’ve had firefighters from Chetwynd, Bowen Island and we’ve got career firefighters from Victoria coming up to train,” he said, and explained Comox has five full-time instructors, which keeps the facility to capacity nearly every weekend.

Naturopathic approaches to prostate cancer treatment and prevention Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer).

In 2012 an estimated 26,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,000 will die of it and one in seven men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and one in 28 will die of it.

Most men in prostate cancer support groups would caution

men to follow their PSA velocity. What this means is that men of all ages should know their baseline PSA number and then monitor the numbers themselves. If the PSA number doubles in any one year period this needs to be monitored and/or treated.The wonderful thing about naturopathic medicine is that when you attempt to prevent cancers you are helping to prevent all cancer types as many of the same remedies

are used for different recommendations cancer types.
